Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG8YGY - Wilko collapses into administration August 2023, putting 12,000 jobs at risk
The chain has been unable to find emergency investment to save its 400 shops across the UK.
Wilko had been working to secure a white knight for the business which has been trading since 1930.
The firm's boss, Mark Jackson, said management had left no stone unturned in its attempts to save the business.
But must concede that with regret, we've no choice but to take the difficult decision to enter into administration, he said.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DHGYW4 - A prominent tower block on the Walsall skyline is being stylishly transformed through design and technology to the tune of more than £3million.
Innovative Midlands housing provider whg will make a bold design statement of dated Austin House while cutting residents' fuel bills and carbon footprint. Carbon savings for the project over 25 years are estimated at 2,340 tonnes while customers can expect to save around a third on energy bills.
The leading landlord is working in partnership with British Gas on the landmark project, which is part funded by the national Community Energy Savings Programme (CESP). A series of internal and external work will take place as part of the radical retrofit.
Chameleon boards that change colour depending on the time of day, view point and exposure to sunlight will be fitted down two aspects of the high rise block, which looms large on a hill in the Butts. As well as introducing colour and interest to the building, the boards will provide 406 square metres of insulation.
248 photo voltaic panels will be fixed to a south facing external wall to harness solar power and generate electricity for the communal lighting and lifts. Heat will be extracted from the ground and pumped into Austin House to power a new heating and hot water system. This will replace the inefficient electric storage heaters to give residents more control over the temperature of their flat and the water they use.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXHBR - William Brodie (28 September 1741 1 October 1788), more commonly known by his prestigious title of Deacon Brodie, was a Scottish cabinet-maker, deacon of a trades guild and Edinburgh city councillor, who maintained a secret life as a burglar, partly for the thrill, and partly to fund his gambling.
Popular myth holds that Deacon Brodie built the first gallows in Edinburgh and was also its first victim. Of this William Roughead in Classic Crimes states that after research he was sure that although the Deacon may have had some hand in the design, ...it was certainly not of his construction, nor was he the first to benefit by its ingenuity.
Sign at Deacon Brodie's Tavern on Edinburgh's Royal Mile
Brodie's alter ego
Robert Louis Stevenson, whose father owned furniture made by Brodie, wrote a play (with W. E. Henley) entitled Deacon Brodie, or The Double Life, which was unsuccessful. However, Stevenson remained fascinated by the dichotomy between Brodie's respectable façade, and his real nature and was inspired to write The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886).[1]
Deacon Brodie is commemorated by a pub of that name on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, on the corner of the Lawnmarket and Bank Street which leads down to The Mound, and a close off the Royal Mile, which contained his family residence and workshops, still bears the name Brodie's Close. A pub in New York City carrying his name sits on the south side of the famous west side 46th Street Restaurant Row between 8th Avenue and 9th Avenue.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXHH2 - William Brodie (28 September 1741 1 October 1788), more commonly known by his prestigious title of Deacon Brodie, was a Scottish cabinet-maker, deacon of a trades guild and Edinburgh city councillor, who maintained a secret life as a burglar, partly for the thrill, and partly to fund his gambling.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG37YT - The current North Bridge is 525 feet (160 m) long and has three spans of arched girders each 175 feet (53 m) feet in length. It is 75 feet (23 m) wide. It was constructed from 18941897 by Sir William Arrol & Co., which company is also noted for construction of the Forth Bridge. The design of the ornamentation was by the City architect of the time, Robert Morham.
The foundation stone was laid on 25 May 1896 by the then Lord Provost (the Rt. Hon Andrew McDonald, with Masonic ceremonial. A medal[3] was struck commemorating the opening of the bridge on 15 September 1897.[4] The medal shows a view of the bridge with trains underneath and on the obverse a bust of the by then knighted Sir Andrew McDonald, Lord Provost.[5]
K.O.S.B. Memorial by Birnie Rhind, North Bridge
Situated on the bridge is a war memorial, by sculptor William Birnie Rhind which memorialises soldiers of the King's Own Scottish Borderers killed in campaigns between 1878 and 1902.[6]
At the southern end of the bridge (where it meets the Royal Mile and South Bridge, in the Edinburgh's Old Town) are substantial buildings whose main entrances are at carriageway level but which also have entrances in the valley below. Those on the west side are The Scotsman Hotel, former headquarters of The Scotsman newspaper, alongside a block of commercial premises and flats (Royal Mile Mansions). That on the east housed Patrick Thomson's department store from 1906 until 1976 when its then owner the House of Fraser rebranded it as Arnotts department store. The store closed in 1981 and the building was redeveloped as a hotel and smaller shops.
At the northern end of the bridge, where it meets Princes Street in the New Town, on the west side is the Balmoral Hotel, originally built as the North British Hotel, the North British Railway's hotel serving Waverley Station, which lies below. On the east side is Waverley Gate, originally the Edinburgh General Post Office, now

The building is now occupied by The People's Story Museum and is protected as a category A listed building
In 1875 the City Architect, Robert Morham completely restored and remodeled the exterior giving it back its medieval look (based on Gordon of Rothiemay's map of 1647). This work included remodeling the interior to create museum spaces.

In November 2008 Woolworths Group entered administration with Deloitte, and by early January 2009 all of its stores had closed. Woolworths' financial performance had been declining in the previous few years, and the events of the closure coincided with the financial crisis and recession which was occurring at the time.

Chairman of the William Brown Library and Museum Sir James Picton laid the foundation stone of the Picton Reading Room in 1875. It was designed by Cornelius Sherlock, and modelled after the British Museum Reading Room, and was the first electrically lit library in the UK.
It was completed in 1879. The front is semicircular with Corinthian columns, and the shape was chosen by the architect to cover the change in the axis of the row of buildings at this point. The Hornby Reading Room (named after Hugh Frederick Hornby) by Thomas Shelmerdine was added in 1906. It stands behind the older building and the interior is decorated in the Edwardian Imperial style

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HT0R - Murdo Maclean and sons is Stornoway's premier department store. A kind of Outer Hebrides Jenners or Kendals, not yet swallowed up by the House of Fraser.
Locals tell me that a trip there was an experience as a child, maybe getting whipped up to the 1st floor for school shoes, sunday best or uniform. I have certainly taken a few shots of it over the years, its a Stornoway icon, (almost as famous as butchers Macleod & MacleodsBlack Pudding or Irn Bru Sausages).
As you walk in there is bric-a-brac downstairs with soft furnishings at the rear. Upstairs are the wearables, shoes, clothes etc. I am told that they stock some quite posh stuff too. I did spot some people sporting Tommy Hilfiger tops in The Thai Cafe, although that might have been from a stall on Inverness Market. They did have mainland accents!
An on-line review I read said iThere's a nice selection of Posh womens hats and bags (Think weddings and church) and a range of womens wear and underwear which is mostly suited to the more mature lady but sometimes you can find a great modern young person piece./i

'My Generation' is a song by the British rock group The Who, which became a hit and one of their most recognisable songs. The song was named the 11th greatest song by Rolling Stone on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and 13th on VH1's list of the 100 Greatest Songs of Rock &
Roll.
It's also part of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll and is inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for 'historical, artistic and significant' value. In 2009 it was named the 37th Greatest Hard Rock Song by VH1.
The song was released as a single on 5 November 1965, reaching No. 2 in the UK, the Who's highest charting single in the UK and No. 74 in America. 'My Generation' also appeared on The Who's 1965 debut album, My Generation (The Who Sings My Generation in the United States), and in greatly extended form on their live album Live at Leeds (1970). The Who re-recorded the song for the Ready Steady Who! EP in 1966, but this version was only released in 1995 on the remastered version of the A Quick One album.
The main difference between this version and the original is that instead of the hail of feedback which ends the original, the band play a chaotic rendition of Edward Elgar's 'Land of Hope and Glory'. In the album's liner notes the song is credited to both Townshend and Elgar. A music video featuring a montage of live performance clips has been played on music stations.
The Zimmers was a British band, thought to have the oldest members of any band in the world. The oldest member (Buster Martin) claimed to have been born in 1906, although some sources indicate he was born in 1913 – he died in 2011. The former lead singer Alf Carretta died on 29 June 2010, aged 93. The group takes its name from the Zimmer frame (walker).
The band was created as a feature in a BBC Television documentary, which was first broadcast on 28 May 2007. The feature of forming the band and recording a single was intended to give a voice to the feelings of isolation and imprisonment suffered by the elderly. The Zimmers' logo is a parody of The Beatles' logo, as is the image of them walking across Abbey Road.
The Zimmers released their first single, a cover of The Who's 'My Generation', reaching no 26 in the UK Singles Chart, on 28 May 2007. The song was produced by Mike Hedges, the video shot by Geoff Wonfor, and it was recorded in the Beatles Studio 2 at Abbey Road.
On 7 April 2012, the band performed the Beastie Boys' '(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)' on Britain's Got Talent.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (The Fringe) is the world's largest arts festival, with the 2012 event spanning 25 days totalling over 2,695 shows from 47 countries in 279 venues. Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place annually in Scotland's capital, in the month of August. The Fringe is a showcase for the performing arts, particularly theatre and comedy (which has seen substantial growth in recent years), although dance and music are also represented. In 2012, 36% of shows were comedy and 28% theatrical productions. Theatrical productions range from the classics of ancient Greece to William Shakespeare, Samuel Beckett and contemporary works. In 2012, 1,418 shows were having their world premiere.
The Fringe is an unjuried festival – with no selection committee, and therefore any type of performance may participate. The Fringe has often showcased experimental works that might not be invited to a more conservative arts festival. In addition to ticketed, programmed events, the Festival has included a street fair, located primarily on the Royal Mile. The Festival is organized by the Festival Fringe Society, which publishes the programme, sells tickets, and offers advice to performers. Their offices are on the Royal Mile.

At venue 203, The Princes Mall, just next to Waverley bridge and railway station, this show was on throughout the festival 4-25th August, as part of the free fringe.
The question raised is 'Wheres the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?' and more importantly 'Why did he pick it'?

Call Me is a play starring Sarah Adams, Christine Clare, Laura Cope, Claire Dean, Katie McArdle and Matthew Stead which was performed at Sweet Grassmarket @ 10:10pm for 70 minutes, on most days during August 2012.
As the blurb says:
By The Slice Theatre Company Presents Call Me!
Writing and producing together for the first time, sisters Sarah Adams and Becky Adams are heading to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year with their play, dating comedy Call Me!, which received rave reviews and a sell-out run in Manchester last year.
Inspired by the likes of Victoria Wood and Dawn French, writer Sarah Adams has formed new theatre company By The Slice to produce a cringe-worthy yet affectionate romantic comedy alongside her film producer sister Becky. By The Slice invites the audience to come and rejoice with them at the ridiculousness of love and dating! What better way to get over your latest dating disaster than to be able to laugh at someone else's ludicrous misfortunes? Yet on this rollercoaster of humiliation and hilarity, we also unexpectedly find a new humility for love.
Taking all of the available Manchester cast with them, By The Slice will also be introducing some new faces as well as new-to-theatre director Dan Wilson whose credits include directing Sir Ian McKellen and Status Quo in Coronation Street, EastEnders, BBC's Land Girls and 32 Brinkburn Street, and feature film The Roundabout.
Sarah is joined in By The Slice by her sister, Producer Becky Adams. Of course initially I was introduced to Call Me! because it's my sister that has written it, but it was clear immediately how funny, engaging and close-to-the-b

Echo and Narcissus @ Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2012. From Rag and Bone Productions the Venue was theSpace on North Bridge. It was on until 18th August 2012 @ venue 36.
As the review says, 'Sometimes it is hard to tell image from reality until the illusion is shattered at the tap of a finger. Durham University’s Rag &
Bone Productions use an exciting combination of physical theatre, drama and dance to bring you this dark and innovative take on a classic Greek myth. The tragic story of Echo and Narcissus follows the disastrous consequences of a man falling in love with his own reflection. Rag &
Bone successfully fuse visual spectacle with the best of storytelling to explore this tale of hurt, rejection, pride and vanity. Not to be missed!'
Narcissus, is a young man blessed with untold beauty, who spurns all amorous advances, be they from citizens, nymphs, or just about anyone who can appreciate the beauty of the perfect human form. Meanwhile, talkative forest nymph Echo is tasked by Zeus to distract his wife Hera with incredible stories while he has an affair. Hera finds out and curses Echo to be able to repeat only the ends of sentences spoken to her (hence her name, Echo).
She runs into Narcissus in a forest, he rejects her fumbled echoes and she wastes away until she is nothing but a voice. Narcissus rejects one final advance of an older man by the name of Ameinus and mocks him for his futile attempts, daring him to kill himself. Ameinus does so, but curses Narcissus beforehand, resulting in Artemis bewitching Narcissus to fall in love with the next person he sees.
As he is hunting in the woods, he stops to rest by a quiet pool in a grassy clearing and falls in love with his own reflection. At a loss, he plunges in to reach the young man but drowns. A small Narcissus flower is washed up on the shore afterwards, taking its name from him.

A show which ran at The Space on The Mile, Venue 39 (80 The High St), August 3rd to the 17th by The Terrible Edgar Theatre Co.
Andrew Leask reviewed it like this: It’s been hours since I left the venue, and I’m still thinking about this play. It takes a complex, metatextual concept – characters in a play have become self-aware – and plays with it, delivering an adaptation of ‘Oedipus’ that is as thought-provoking as it is engaging.
The chorus want to hide the horrible truth from Oedipus, but are compelled to follow the script
at times comical, it builds to a dark, fittingly tragic climax, throwing the audience’s need for tragedy and catharsis back at them. If you’re interested in tragedy, this will leave you with a mental itch that you can’t quite scratch: the mark of exciting, provocative theatre.
Oedipus fulfilled a prophecy that said he would kill his father and marry his mother, and thereby brought disaster on his city and family. The story of Oedipus is the subject of Sophocles's tragedy Oedipus the King, which was followed by Oedipus at Colonus and then Antigone. Together, these plays make up Sophocles's three Theban plays. Oedipus represents two enduring themes of Greek myth and drama: the flawed nature of humanity and an individual's powerlessness against the course of destiny in a harsh universe.

Part of the Free Fringe, the New Zealand company Trick of the Light Theatre has travelled across the world to tell a wonderful story of maps and roads that exist only if you know where to look for them. And if you follow them, the consequences may be more real than you expected.
The starting point of the story is the paper roads of New Zealand – roads that were built and drawn in on several maps but never materialised as the money was missing. Conjuring up a visual imagery that switches between episodic temporaries in refreshing ways, The Road that Wasn’t There imagines what would happen if one did indeed follow one of these paper roads off the edge of the real world.
The story centres on Maggie, who as a young girl follows one of these paper roads leading off behind the graveyard on her way to work for her family. She finds everything she has always wanted, but is drawn further and further away from the real world and into this wondrous world where time stands still. Performed through acting, puppetry and shadow theatre, the story is woven into a contemporary plot where her grown-up son is moving her to an old people’s home to protect her from her fantasies. As the two stories unfold, we learn something both about reality and about responsibility, love, and the changes that have occurred between generations.
The Road That Wasn’t There played at the Free Sisters venue until the 26 August as part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
In 2012, 1,418 shows were having their world première.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEYA7D - Poole Quay, Dorset at dusk, Poole, Dorset BH15 1AB showing Corkers bar and High Street.
Poole Quay is a visitor attraction to the south of the town centre lined with a mixture of traditional public houses, redeveloped warehouses, modern apartment blocks and historic listed buildings. Once the busy centre of Poole's maritime industry, all port activities moved to Hamworthy in the 1970s as the Quay became increasingly popular with tourists.
The Grade II* listed Customs House on the quay-front was built in 1814 and now functions as a restaurant and bar. Nearby the Grade I listed Town Cellars, a medieval warehouse built in the 15th century on the foundations of a 14th century stone building, houses a local history centre.
Scaplen's Court, another Grade I listed building, also dates from the medieval era. The Poole Pottery production factory once stood on the eastern end of the Quay but the site was redeveloped into a luxury apartment block and marina in 2001, although an outlet store remains on the site. Boats regularly depart from the quay during the summer and provide cruises around the harbour and to Brownsea Island, the River Frome and Swanage.
Public artworks along the Quay include Sea Music a large metal sculpture designed by Sir Anthony Caro, and a life-size bronze sculpture of Robert Baden-Powell created to celebrate the founding of the Scout Movement on Brownsea Island. At the western end of the quay near the mouth of Holes Bay is Poole Bridge. Built in 1927, it is the third bridge to be located on the site since 1834

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DHGYW2 - A prominent tower block on the Walsall skyline is being stylishly transformed through design and technology to the tune of more than £3million.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HF98 - The Many Reasons Why Women Love Shoes So Very Much
By the time you've reached the shoe store, the body has begun to release dopamine and serotonin as well as norepinephrine and oxytocin
Women love shoes
it's an indisputable fact! Some women love high heels
some women love shoes that are bejewelled and bedazzled, some love Western boots, some love gladiator sandals, some love ballet pumps and some love thick, heavy boots. Whatever your shoe of choice, we know you love them. Ladies stalk through the pages of fashion magazines or blogs, searching for discounted designer fashion, we trawl through vintage and second-hand shops looking for just the right pair of already worn-in leather, we window shop with eyes lit up like Christmas trees. No judgement here
shoes are the best! The question is, why do women love shoes so much? I mean, in the end, they're really just safety coverings for your feetaren't they? Let's unpack some of the reasons why women love shoes so much.
Shoes: A Love Story
There's the obvious reason, of course: shoes are pretty. I can't count the times I have seen a gorgeous woman walking down the street. Her hair is blowing softly in the breeze, her face alight with happiness, her outfit perfectly coordinated and thenboom, bad shoes. A bad shoe can destroy all the beauty in a perfect outfit, in the same way, a beautiful shoe serves to complement it. A lovely pair of shoes is the star on top of the tree
no outfit is quite complete without it! There's a shoe to suit every kind of woman. If you like adding a little height and extending those gorgeous legs, then high heels are for you. Platforms, stilettos, bootsand the list goes on
Curator of a recent exhibition at F.I.T. in New York, Valerie Steele, believes that shoes become an extension of a woman's body and that they say a lot about our social status, sexuality, ethics and attitude. Valerie wondered if perhaps, the sculptural quality of shoes is part of the reason

The location detail, Walsall, strengthens searches for regional features, travel pages, local-history pieces and news use where a named place matters. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY5KEK - Bath St,Warrington Hospitals NHS Trust,Cheshire,England,UK is a useful documentary subject because it fixes a recognisable place, object or activity in its real setting rather than presenting it as a staged illustration. A hospital trust building on Bath Street speaks to the everyday estate behind the NHS, the offices, access roads and local facilities that support clinical care but rarely appear in headline imagery. The scene can illustrate health administration, hospital pressures, public-sector estates, local employment, patient services and the place of NHS sites within town-centre streets. The location detail, Warrington, strengthens searches for regional features, travel pages, local-history pieces and news use where a named place matters. Relevant editorial themes include NHS, hospital estate, healthcare infrastructure and public services, with each theme rooted in the visible subject, place or activity. It would suit newspaper, magazine, web, council, transport, heritage, housing, retail, travel or social-commentary use where a believable, unpolished view of real life is more valuable than a generic illustration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEEGAK - Opened by Felix O'Hanlon as The Railway Tavern, the pub was then bought by Michael Fanigan. Fanigan's son Patrick renamed and renovated the pub in 1885.
The Crown owes its elaborate tiling, stained glass and woodwork to the Italian craftsmen whom Fanigan persuaded to work on the pub after hours. These craftsmen were brought to Ireland to work on the many new churches being built in Belfast at the time. It was this high standard of work that gave the Crown the reputation of being one of the finest Victorian Gin Palaces of its time.
In 1978, the National Trust, following persuasion by people including Sir John Betjeman, purchased the property and three years later completed a £400,000 renovation to restore the bar to its original Victorian state. Further restoration by the National Trust was done in 2007 at a cost of £500,000. This work is the subject of a BBC Northern Ireland documentary, The Crown Jewel, screened in 2008.
A recognisable landmark of Belfast, the pub has featured as a location in numerous film and television productions, such as David Caffrey's Divorcing Jack (1998) and Carol Reed's classic 1947 film Odd Man Out.
The Crown has been given a Grade A Listed Building status by the Environment and Heritage Service.
