Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJ120E - Close-up of a cast iron pavement grid or drainage cover in Briggate, Leeds, carrying the raised stock-photo/gotonysmith-Lettering.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>lettering C. Wooler & Son, Sanitary Engineers, Leeds . The black and white detail photograph shows rough worn metal, patterned anti-slip bars, weathered surface texture and historic maker's lettering, turning a small piece of street furniture into a record of local engineering, public health and infrastructure. The image is useful for editorial coverage of Leeds urban history, Victorian and Edwardian sanitation, drainage, cast iron manufacturing, street ironwork, public realm, city centre heritage and overlooked material evidence beneath pedestrians' feet. The wording sanitary engineers reflects a period when urban growth, sewers, water supply and public health improvements were central to civic life. Firms supplying grids, drains, covers, pipes and related metalwork helped make dense commercial streets safer, cleaner and more functional. Briggate is one of Leeds's best-known shopping and commercial streets, so the survival of this marked grid links modern retail and pedestrian life with the practical infrastructure of an industrial city. The photograph has strong stock value for themes around hidden heritage, local makers, engineering trades, iron foundries, drainage systems, urban archaeology, street furniture, utilities, conservation and public health history. The monochrome treatment emphasises the raised text, pitted metal, highlights, repeated rectangular tread pattern and worn surface, giving the image an abstract graphic quality as well as documentary interest. It can illustrate features on Leeds history, old trade names, city centre detail, pavements, drainage, sanitation, municipal improvement and the quiet survival of industrial craftsmanship in everyday streetscapes. With no wider street view visible, the image should be captioned from the readable lettering and supplied Briggate context rather than treated as a precise street-number location.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JG7N5R - Our Town Hall
Winter 2018
The Town Hall closed in January 2018 so that work could begin on the Our Town Hall Project.
At the very heart of the city, Manchester's Grade 1 listed Town Hall is a much-loved landmark, where we gather at important times to honour and celebrate, to welcome visitors and to do business. It's where we host civic guests, international delegations, Mancunian weddings and special events. It's where we celebrate those who've been awarded the Freedom of the City.
But “ having opened in 1877“ the building was showing its age, so we started a major update to this architectural masterpiece to protect and improve it for Manchester and the nation, and lovingly restore it. See the Project Introduction page for more background, including our original film.
Autumn 2022
Now that we're halfway through the construction phase of the project, we thought it was a good time to make an update film that shows some of what's been done so far, what we still have to do and - in particular - share some views of what the building looks like inside at the moment.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DC8D - Sugar is the generalized name for sweet, short-chain, soluble carbohydrates, many of which are used in food. They are carbohydrates, composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. There are various types of sugar derived from different sources.
Simple sugars are called monosaccharides and include glucose (also known as dextrose), fructose and galactose. The table or granulated sugar most customarily used as food is sucrose, a disaccharide. (In the body, sucrose hydrolyses into fructose and glucose.) Other disaccharides include maltose and lactose. Longer chains of sugars are called oligosaccharides.
Chemically-different substances may also have a sweet taste, but are not classified as sugars. Some are used as lower-calorie food substitutes for sugar described as artificial sweeteners.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EBFWG3 - Tower Bridge is a bridge in London. It crosses the River Thames near the Tower of London. The north side of the bridge is Tower Hill, and the south side of the bridge comes down into Bermondsey, robbie, an area in Southwark. It is far more visible than London Bridge, which people often mistake it for. If large boats need to sail under Tower Bridge, the two halves of the bridge lift up to let it under. Many tourists go to London to see the Tower Bridge.
When it was first built, Tower Bridge was the bridge. Bascule is the French word for a see-saw. The bascules are the surfaces raised to allow tall ships to pass through: this happens about 900 times per year. The bridge's deck can be raised to 83deg from the horizontal. Tower Bridge is one of London's most famous sights.
The City of London Corporation held a competition for the design in 1876. Over 50 designs were entered, and in 1884 Horace Jones and John Wolfe Barry's design was chosen.
Workers began to build the Tower Bridge in April 1886 and the bridge was opened in 30 June 1894.
In June 2012, the bridge was highlighted on the route of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee Pageant on the Thames

It was constructed from 1894“1897 by Sir William Arrol & Co., which company is also noted for construction of the Forth Bridge. The design of the ornamentation was by the City architect of the time, Robert Morham.
The foundation stone was laid on 25 May 1896 by the then Lord Provost (the Rt. Hon Andrew McDonald, with Masonic ceremonial. K.O.S.B. Memorial by Birnie Rhind, North Bridge
Situated on the bridge is a war memorial, by sculptor William Birnie Rhind which memorialises soldiers of the King's Own Scottish Borderers killed in campaigns between 1878 and 1902.
At the southern end of the bridge (where it meets the Royal Mile and South Bridge, in the Edinburgh's Old Town) are substantial buildings whose main entrances are at carriageway level but which also have entrances in the valley below. Those on the west side are The Scotsman Hotel, former headquarters of The Scotsman newspaper, alongside a block of commercial premises and flats (Royal Mile Mansions). That on the east housed Patrick Thomson's department store from 1906 until 1976 when its then owner the House of Fraser rebranded it as Arnotts department store. The store closed in 1981 and the building was redeveloped as a hotel and smaller shops.
At the northern end of the bridge, where it meets Princes Street in the New Town, on the west side is the Balmoral Hotel, originally built as the North British Hotel, the North British Railway's hotel serving Waverley Station, which lies below. On the east side is Waverley Gate, originally the Edinburgh General Post Office, now

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEEG4J - Murals in Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the region's past and present political and religious divisions.
Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. A mural therefore exists to express an idea or message and could generally be seen as reflecting values held dear to that community.
In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands
murals of international solidarity with revolutionary groups are equally common, as are those which highlight a particular issue, for example the Ballymurphy Massacre or the McGurk's Bar bombing. In working class unionist communities, murals are used to promote Ulster loyalist paramilitary groups such as the Ulster Defence Association and Ulster Volunteer Force and commemorate their deceased members. However traditional themes such as William III of England and the Battle of the Boyne, the Battle of the Somme and the 36th Ulster Division are equally common

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R8T9G4 - Passengers at Crewe station now have access to a new waiting room, specifically designed to offer those with hidden disabilities a safe and calm environment.
The Calm Corner is the first of its kind on the rail network. It features the use of grey and green colours in order to give a calming effect, a living wall and plants to complement the colour scheme, specially designed furniture for comfort and relaxation, a child's play table, LED rope lighting that can change brightness to suit all.
It also has screens with old images of Crewe station and town centre to help trigger memories for those suffering from dementia and has a rail point Totem offering helpful advice (EG train and station layout).
It was brought to life through the work of train operators at the station, Network Rail and advice from a number of partner charities.
The idea was first suggested by work experience student, Megan Hughes, who used her own experience of living with Aspergers Syndrome as inspiration for the project.
Passengers using the waiting room can have access to the same support and passenger information they would get elsewhere on the station. However, it will be with the addition of a special totem screen, offering helpful advice such as train times, onward travel information and station layout.
Through ongoing work with Alzheimer's Society, London Northwestern Railway is committed to improving the experience for passengers living with dementia, to help support independent living through the use of the rail network.
The train operator is now working on initiatives to improve staff training as well as implementing small changes at stations that will make a big difference to the experience for passengers.
The ˜memory corner' has been designed to help trigger memories for those who have used Crewe station for many years using a collection of historic photos of the station.
It is hoped this collection can grow, with contributions from passengers, families and other supporters.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F0G7EF - DDR-era Stasi surveillance and monitoring equipment is shown on display in Berlin, with a small CRT security monitor above stacked analogue cassette tape recorders, control units, switches, dials and recording decks. The dimly lit interior, desk lamp and heavy electronic hardware evoke the practical machinery of Cold War spying, before digital surveillance replaced magnetic tape, cathode ray tube screens and manual monitoring rooms. The equipment is associated with the East German Ministry for State Security, known as the Stasi or MfS, which operated one of the most intrusive domestic intelligence systems in post-war Europe. In the German Democratic Republic, surveillance was used to monitor political opponents, dissidents, church groups, writers, artists, foreign visitors and ordinary citizens suspected of disloyalty to the ruling SED state. The Stasi Museum Berlin is located in House 1 of the former Stasi headquarters in Berlin-Lichtenberg and documents the organisation's role in political repression, intelligence gathering and everyday state control. Displays at the museum include original technology such as bugs, hidden cameras and other surveillance devices, alongside the preserved office of Erich Mielke, the long-serving Minister for State Security. This photograph is useful for editorial themes including East German history, Cold War Berlin, state surveillance, civil liberties, dictatorship, intelligence services, analogue recording, spy technology, political policing, secret police archives, human rights and the legacy of communist rule in Europe. The screen's blue-toned image and the banks of black and silver recording equipment create a strong visual shorthand for covert observation and monitored private life. The scene is indoors, with no weather visible, and appears to be a museum or historical exhibition rather than an operational setting. It records the physical tools of twentieth-century surveillance and the chilling administrative ordinariness of a s
