Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPDJJF - St Francis Xavier Church is a Roman Catholic Parish church in the city centre of Hereford, Herefordshire. The neoclassical-style church was built in 1839 and was designated a Grade II* listed building on 10 June 1952. It is in the Hereford Deanery of the Archdiocese of Cardiff.
History
The foundation stone of St Francis Xavier's was laid 19 September 1837 and Queen Victoria sent her personal representative to the ceremony. The church was designed by Charles Day, an architect from Worcester, who also designed St Edmund's Church in Bury St Edmunds for the Jesuits. The building's construction cost over £16,000. It was opened on 7 August 1839, before the restoration of the English Catholic hierarchy in 1850, because of this, the church has no windows, fearing that any would be broken during the early 19th century. The church was built on the site of a chapel used by the Society of Jesus during the reformation, hence it was dedicated to St Francis Xavier, a Jesuit missionary from the 16th century who travelled to eastern and southern Asia. The Jesuits were in charge of the Catholic mission to Hereford from at least 1773 (when it was under the care of Dr John Butler, S.J.) to 1858. In 1858, the Benedictines created Belmont Abbey nearby. The church was handed over to them that year. It remained in their hands until 1954 when it was given over the Archdiocese of Cardiff. In 1992, administration of it reverted to the abbey.
The church contains a relic, the hand of St John Kemble a Catholic martyr, who was executed in nearby Widemarsh Common on 22 August 1679. He was beatified in 1929 by Pope Pius XI and canonized on 25 October 1970 by Pope Paul VI. His feast day is 22 August.
The exterior comprises columns and a frieze made of stucco. There is a dome at the back of the church. The front comprises two fluted Doric columns either side of the entrance. The interior is ornate with a decorated ceiling made of plaster. The church is lit by a lightwell.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPDJJX - The Three Choirs Festival is a music festival held annually at the end of July, rotating among the cathedrals of the Three Counties (Hereford, Gloucester and Worcester) and originally featuring their three choirs, which remain central to the week-long programme. The large-scale choral repertoire is now performed by the Festival Chorus, but the festival also features other major ensembles and international soloists. The 2011 festival took place in Worcester from 6 to 13 August. The 2012 festival in Hereford took place earlier than usual, from 21 to 28 July, to avoid clashing with the 2012 Summer Olympics. The event is now established in the last week of July. The 300th anniversary of the original Three Choirs Festival was celebrated during the 2015 festival, which took place from 25 July to 1 August in Hereford (the landmark 300th meeting of the Three Choirs does not fall until after 2027 due to there being no Three Choirs Festivals for the duration of both World War I and World War II and COVID-19. The 2023 Festival will take place in Gloucester from 22 to 29 July.
The festival is closely identified with the musical careers of British composers Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughan Williams. The organists of the three cathedrals (who act as artistic director and festival conductor when it is their cathedral's turn to host the festival) are Geraint Bowen (Hereford), Adrian Partington (Gloucester) and Samuel Hudson (Worcester).

History
The facility was established by Francis Woodley Lindsay, a surgeon, in rented premises in Commercial Road as the Herefordshire and South Wales Eye and Ear Institution in 1882. It moved to permanent premises in Eign Street as the Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital in 1888[1] and, after being renamed the Victoria Eye Hospital in 1923, joined the National Health Service in 1948.[2] After services transferred to the new Hereford County Hospital in 2002, the Victoria Eye Hospital closed and has since been converted into apartments

We got to know this music by the radio and by the military bands like Glenn Miller's band during WW2. This became the British dance band sound that stayed popular in the 50's and 60's. Whereas jazz musicians tend to prefer the swinging groove of the earlier bands, the British audience still has a nostalgia for the Miller sound. We hope to offer both.
In Hereford, saxophone players Mancell Burgess and Les Causer got together to bring this music alive, with their friends playing brass and forming a rhythm section. Early Hereford bands were called the Paramount Orchestra and the Russ Allen Dance Orchestra which played regularly at the Park Hall Wormelow.
Mancell Burgess and Les Causer were Musical Directors of the band with Ray Walters sometimes taking a turn to lead. An early member of the band was Kenny Powell, previously a member of an RAF Band (now retired to grow prize cucumbers!) who brought authenticity to HBB performances!
Eventually this became the Hereford Big Band.
As the band is well-known for its performances of the music of Glenn Miller there have been some very special 40s events at RAF Cosford, at Shobdon Airfield and at Tenbury Wells.
The band has been as far afield as Calne, Wiltshire, Shrewsbury, Llandrindod Wells and Rhayadar
A singer is very often available to add that further excitement and interest to an HBB performance. The band has been privileged to include the outstanding singing of Beth Hippard and Lorna Dale, as well as their current splendid and versatile vocalist Terence Rowberry.
Hereford Big Band has been led by several further expert Musical Directors, including Pete Groves, Chris White and Andi Licqurish. The band's current Director is Pete Fletcher, versatile musician, teacher and technician who brings the band bang up-to-date

Built in 1621, it began life as a butcher's home and shop and finished its commercial life in the hands of Lloyds Bank in the late 1920s. Since 1929 it has been a fascinating museum giving an insight into daily life in Jacobean times. It is furnished in period style with an internationally important collection of English oak furniture and there are interesting pieces in every room. Of particular interest to many visitors are the rare wall-paintings, the four-poster bed and the baby-walkers. There are hands-on activities for children including replica clothing and puzzles. For those unable to climb the stairs, a virtual tour is situated on the fully-accessible ground floor.

The town hall was the headquarters of Hereford City Council for much of the 20th century and continued to be the local seat of government when Hereford District Council was formed in 1974. Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, visited the town hall and unveiled a plaque on 24 April 1957.
In autumn 1974 the City of Hereford adopted the frigate, HMS Antelope
following the loss of the ship in May 1982 after it came under attack by four Argentine A-4B Skyhawks during the Falklands War, the mast head and other artifacts were recovered from the South Atlantic and displayed in the town hall.
The town hall ceased its local government role when the enlarged Herefordshire Council was formed at Brockington House in Hereford in 1998. However, in April 2000 the town hall became the home of the newly formed Hereford Town Council, which was itself designated Hereford City Council in October 2000. A programme of restoration works to the façade was completed in July 2019

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07AC8 - The Wye Bridge is a Grade I listed[1] stone bridge in Hereford, the county town of Herefordshire in England. Spanning the River Wye, it was constructed in 1490 to replace an earlier timber bridge dating back to the twelfth century.[2] During the 1645 Siege of Hereford in the English Civil War it was the scene of heavy fighting between the English Royalist defenders and the Scottish Covenanter besiegers. A gatehouse that stood on the site was severely damaged and was later demolished in the eighteenth century.

Ground floor: post with arch brace to billeted bressumer. The house has the earliest street elevation in the City. (RCHME).

The charity was originally set up in memory of five-year-old Hannah Tarplee who died as a result of cancer in June 2005. Hannah loved her hair so when she underwent treatment for a Wilms' tumour, the loss of her hair was especially traumatic. When Hannah died, her parents felt the most fitting tribute would be a charity dedicated to providing wigs, free of charge, to children who had lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other conditions. The Little Princess Trust was born and the charity has since helped thousands of young people regain their confidence and identity by giving them a real hair wig.
Thanks to fundraising from its family of supporters, the Little Princess Trust has also committed more than £20 million to projects focused on kinder and more effective treatments for childhood cancers.
The charity's headquarters are currently based at The Hannah Tarplee Building in Berrington Street, Hereford. Phil Brace is the chief executive officer and Wendy Tarplee-Morris, the mother of Hannah Tarplee, is the Director of Service & Impact.
The Little Princess Trust is a registered charity (1176160). Due to a demand for longer wigs, the charity is asking its supporters to donate hair lengths of 12 inches and above
