Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCK2M - A large yellow Ainscough mobile crane dominates Deansgate in Manchester city centre during a temporary road closure required for major lifting operations. The scene is photographed in summer 2025 under clear blue skies, strong daylight and dry conditions, typical of hot summer weather in the city.
Behind the crane rises the Beetham Tower, one of Manchester's most recognisable skyscrapers, housing the Hilton Manchester Deansgate hotel. The contrast between heavy construction machinery at street level and the sleek glass tower above highlights the scale and complexity of maintaining, adapting and developing dense urban environments.
Such operations frequently require full road closures and extensive traffic management in Manchester's core, reflecting the ongoing regeneration and vertical growth of the city. The image is well suited for editorial use covering urban development, construction logistics, infrastructure disruption, city-centre regeneration, and the practical realities of maintaining modern high-rise buildings within historic street networks.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3C4CXN4 - A gigantic mechanical bull rages over unsuspecting passengers at Birmingham's central station. In 2022, Birmingham hosted the quadrennial Commonwealth Games, introducing a massive mechanical bull during the opening ceremony. Standing 33 feet tall and weighing 2.5 tonnes, the gargantuan creature amazed many viewers before seemingly fading into oblivion.
That is, until he made a triumphant return to Birmingham in July 2023. Though the bull was to be dismantled after the games, people on social media campaigned for its preservation, helping it find a new permanent home in the city.
The raging bull was officially given the name of Ozzy, after none other than the former lead singer of Black Sabbath, who grew up in Birmingham. Unveiled by Ozzy Osbourne's wife Sharon and sister Jean, Ozzy the Bull stands towering above passengers at Birmingham New Street Station, a new beloved icon of the city.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RECE2H - Meadowbank Stadium (officially the Meadowbank Sports Centre) is a multi-purpose sports facility located in the Meadowbank area of Edinburgh, Scotland. Built on the site of the earlier New Meadowbank and Old Meadowbank sports venues, it was originally built to host the 1970 Commonwealth Games. It also hosted the Games in 1986, becoming the first venue to host the Games twice. It is the current home of Scottish League One side Edinburgh City.
The stadium has also regularly hosted football. It was the home ground of Scottish Football League team Meadowbank Thistle between 1974 and 1995, becoming the first all-seated football ground in the UK in the process, it hosted senior non-league football as the home ground of Edinburgh City. League football returned to Meadowbank in 2016 following City's promotion to the Scottish Professional Football League. The Meadowbank complex also hosted Leith Athletic, which played on the Meadowbank 3G artificial pitch adjacent to the main stadium since 2013.
In the early months of 2019 the stadium was demolished and work begun on construction of its replacement. In 2022, following the completion of construction, Edinburgh City returned to Meadowbank.
Meadowbank Stadium was also used for rugby union as the home venue of Edinburgh Rugby between 2002 and 2004.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M95NKR - The entrance gates to the Sailors' Home were elaborate decorative pieces of ironwork which served the dual purpose of protecting the Savings Bank and keeping out seamen who might wish to gain entry to the Home after the strict 10 pm curfew.
By April 1852 the lower sections of the gates had been installed, decorated with a combination of elements from the interior balconies
four great panels of rope-work with central mermaid and trident figures identical to those inside. The two outer panels were fixed whilst the two centre sections rolled behind them on rails where they were hidden from sight while the Home was open for business.
The iron-work of the lower gates, produced a solid, intimidating aspect compared with the much lighter appearance of the balcony railings. The huge mass of iron made an impassable barrier but also a massive weight and it would have taken some effort to slide the gates open and close.
1852: An Unfortunate Death of Mary Ann Price
1907: The Tragic Death of Constable Locke
In the Annals of the Sailors' Home, printed in the Home's annual report for the year 1935, against the year 1907 was the following entry: November - Police Officer Locke killed through front gate falling upon him.
Early on the morning of Sunday 24 November, nearly an hour after midnight, Police constable number 324A, Brownlow Locke, of the Liverpool City Constabulary, met his death in a very strange and unexpected manner.
1951: The Gates Move to Their New Home in Sandwell
As part of the repair to War Damage following the Liverpool Blitz it was decided to remove the gates. On 25 March 1948 W & T Avery who had swallowed-up Pooley's and Sons were offered the gates by the Sailors' Home Committee. On 18 May 1949 Avery's made an offer of 50 guineas for the gates, which was accepted on 3 May. 1951.
The home was demolished between 1974-1975. After refurbishment at Barr & Grosvenor Ltd's foundry Wolverhampton, the gates were returned to the Liverpool One shopping development

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JJYRFG - Most thieves are opportunists, so hiding your valuables from view should be your top priority. If a criminal can't see your shed from the path or road, there's no reason to suppose that you have one, and no reason to come looking for the treasures it contains.
Consider growing tall hedges and putting up high fence panels to shield your garden from view, but do avoid taking measures like cementing glass or barbed wire to the tops of walls and fences. You might find yourself in hot water should a thief injure him or herself breaking into your garden.
Minimise the number of garden entrances and install heavy lockable gates that robbers can't see through. If getting into your garden poses a challenge, many thieves won't bother trying.
A standard shed door won't keep out determined intruders. To thoroughly secure your shed, you're going to need something more substantial like a fully framed door which offers you the opportunity to fit mortice or yale-style locks.
Hasp and staple fastenings and pad bolts are less secure but you can improve their efficacy by securing lock plates with round-head coach bolts, which are far harder to remove than screws, and by fixing a metal plate to the back of the door to prevent criminals cutting out the lock.
Also pay attention to external hinges which you should also secure with coach bolts ? it doesn't matter how good your lock is if thieves can unscrew your hinges and gain entry that way.
If you're using padlocks, it pays to get the best you can find. High security insurance approved versions cost from ?30 to ?160
While it's possible to wire your shed to your home alarm system, it's not strictly necessary. A basic motion sensitive, battery powered alarm which belts out 120 decibels ? loud as a big thunderclap ? when triggered, will only set you back about ?25.
More sophisticated alarm systems obviously cost more, but it's perfectly possible to arm your shed without breaking the bank.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A6YWE8 - MIKE Amesbury is calling for an urgent investigation into flooding which hit Northwich over the weekend. The town's MP spent Sunday at the scene along with Environment Agency staff, speaking to residents and businesses who had been impacted by the flooding.
He has now written to the Environment Agency and Environment Secretary Theresa Villiers calling for an urgent probe into the flooding. Waitrose car park was flooded.
Mike said: This has had a devastating impact on many local residents and it's clear questions need to be answered about what happened.
Environment Agency and council staff on the ground did a fantastic job at the scene, but in terms of the wider picture we need to know how this happened so we can ensure it doesn't happen again.
Flood defences were put to the test in July 2018.
New ?7m defences were installed in June 2017, after costly floods hit the town centre ? which sits at the the confluence of the rivers Weaver and Dane ? in 2000 and again in 2012.
While the first phase of demountable barriers was put up on Friday night, Waitrose car park and Dane Street flooded on Saturday ? with photos showing drains in the road struggling to cope.
More at https://www.northwichguardian.co.uk/news/17997547.questions-need-answered-town-centre-flooding/ Waitrose car park, Dane Street, the subway and lower Witton Street are among the areas affected.
Hayhurst Quay marina was evacuated, with a 65-year-old man rescued from the water overnight and another man taken to hospital with suspected hypothermia.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT2Y4 - Alcohol abuse encompasses a spectrum of unhealthy alcohol drinking behaviors, ranging from binge drinking to alcohol dependence, in extreme cases resulting in health problems for individuals and large scale social problems such as alcohol-related crimes.
Alcohol abuse was a psychiatric diagnosis in the DSM-IV, and has been merged with alcohol dependence into alcohol use disorder in the DSM-5
Globally, alcohol consumption is the seventh leading risk factor for both death and the burden of disease and injury. In short, except for tobacco, alcohol accounts for a higher burden of disease than any other drug. Alcohol use is a major cause of preventable liver disease worldwide, and alcoholic liver disease is the main alcohol-related chronic medical illness. Millions of men and women of all ages, from adolescents to the elderly, engage in unhealthy drinking in the United States. Alcohol use disorder (AUD) reportedly most often affects young men (aged 18?24 years) of lower socioeconomic status.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RGKETK - One of the most common types of fire protection systems for office buildings are fire sprinkler systems. While fire sprinkler systems are more than capable of suppressing a fire, the water from the sprinkler system can damage sensitive environments like server rooms, telecommunication sites, data centers, control rooms, museums, power plants, and more. For these environments, businesses turn to fire suppression systems that disperse an inert gas or combination of gasses to suppress the fire without causing damage to electronics or permanently losing data.
For buildings that have little or no occupancy, carbon dioxide systems are often used as the key suppressant. However, carbon dioxide (CO2) fire suppression systems create an inherent health risk for people in the area. That is why you won't normally find CO2 fire suppression systems installed in normally occupied buildings and enclosures. Instead, you'll find clean agent fire suppression systems installed to protect sensitive environments. Clean agent fire suppression systems pose a much lower health risk to people when compared to CO2 which can be deadly. When choosing a clean agent fire suppression system, there are three common types:

Novec 1230 Clean Agent Fire Suppression System

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64KDF - This image shows a dramatic sunset over the former ICI chemical works at Northwich in Cheshire, with the silhouetted industrial buildings reflected in the calm waters of the River Weaver. The rich colours of the evening sky contrast sharply with the dark outline of the redundant factory structures, creating a powerful visual record of Britain's industrial past.
Northwich was a major centre of the chemical industry throughout the twentieth century, closely linked to salt extraction and chemical production along the River Weaver. The site was operated for many years by Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), one of Britain's most important industrial companies, before large-scale closures and restructuring led to the end of production.
The buildings visible in the image represent a period when heavy industry dominated the landscape and local economy, shaping employment, housing, and infrastructure across the town. Since closure, the area has become part of wider discussions around industrial decline, environmental impact, land remediation, and regeneration in post-industrial northern England.
Photographed at sunset, the still water and reflections add a contemplative quality, emphasising themes of transition, memory, and change. The image is well suited for editorial use covering British industrial heritage, post-industrial landscapes, environmental history, and the visual legacy of chemical manufacturing in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYND0 - Tesco plc is a British multinational groceries and general merchandise retailer with headquarters in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England, United Kingdom. It is the third-largest retailer in the world measured by gross revenues and the ninth-largest retailer in the world measured by revenues. It has shops in seven countries across Asia and Europe, and is the market leader of groceries in the UK (where it has a market share of around 28.4%), Ireland, Hungary and Thailand.
Tesco was founded in 1919 by Jack Cohen as a group of market stalls. The Tesco name first appeared in 1924, after Cohen purchased a shipment of tea from T. E. Stockwell and combined those initials with the first two letters of his surname, and the first Tesco shop opened in 1931 in Burnt Oak, Barnet. His business expanded rapidly, and by 1939 he had over 100 Tesco shops across the country
Originally a UK grocer, Tesco has expanded globally since the early 1990s, with operations in 11 other countries in the world. The company pulled out of the US in 2013, but as of 2018 continues to see growth elsewhere. Since the 1960s, Tesco has diversified into areas such as the retailing of books, clothing, electronics, furniture, toys, petrol, software, financial services, telecoms and internet services. In the 1990s Tesco repositioned itself from being a down-market high-volume low-cost retailer, to one designed to attract a range of social groups by offering products ranging from low-cost Tesco Value items (launched 1993) to its Tesco Finest range. This broadening of its appeal was successful and saw the chain grow from 500 shops in the mid-1990s to 2,500 shops fifteen years later.
Tesco is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. It had a market capitalization of approximately ?18.1 billion as of 22 April 2015, the 28th-largest of any company with a primary listing on the London Stock Exchange

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4601233205 - 'Well, this will be one year when I cannot vote for the 'Official Monster Raving Loony Party'. Lord Sutch (or David Edward Sutch aka the 3rd Earl of Harrow) being no longer with us. With his death 16th June 1999, one strand of eccentric British tradition ended.
I once met him before the 1997 election. I had a short chat at a gig in Macclesfield when photographing a rock band who was supporting him. He certainly had many contacts in the music world, as this old vinyl album of mine testifies.
In 1963, Sutch and his manager, Reginald Calvert, took over Shivering Sands Army Fort, a Maunsell Fort off Southend. From there in 1964 they started 'Radio Sutch'. It was the time of pirate radio stations such as Radio Caroline. Broadcasts consisted of music and Mandy Rice-Davies reading Lady Chatterley's Lover. Sutch tired of the station, and sold it to Calvert, which was renamed 'Radio City', which lasted until 1967. In 1966 Calvert was shot dead by Oliver Smedley over a financial dispute. Smedley was acquitted on grounds of self-defence. About this time Ritchie Blackmore left his band, 'The Savages' to form prog rockers 'Deep Purple'.
In 1968, Sutch toured parts of the United States in the Rolls Royce on this cover, with a Union Jack Flag on the roof and a trailer of Marshall amplifiers to sell, hitched to the back. This album 'Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends' was named in a 1998 BBC poll as the worst album of all time, a status it also held in Colin Larkin's book The Top 1000 Albums of All Time. All despite the fact that Jimmy Page, John Bonham, Jeff Beck, Noel Redding and Nicky Hopkins performed on it and helped write it.
In the Rolling Stones song 'Get Off of My Cloud', the guy who shows up 'All dressed up just like a Union Jack' was infact Lord Sutch, uninvited in Mick Jagger's room.
He founded the Official Monster Raving Loony Party in the UK 1983 and fought the Bermondsey by-election. In his career he contested over 40 elections, rarely threatening the major candidates, but often getting a respectable number of votes. He was easily recognisable at election counts by his flamboyant clothes. It was after he polled several hundred votes in Margaret Thatcher's Finchley constituency in 1983 that the deposit paid by candidates was raised from £150 to £500. This did little to deter Sutch, who increased the concerts he performed to pay for campaigns.
His most significant contribution to politics came at the Bootle by-election in 1990. He secured more votes than the candidate of the Continuing Social Democratic Party (SDP), led by former Foreign Secretary David Owen. Within days the SDP dissolved itself. In 1993, when the British National Party gained its first local councillor, Derek Beackon, Sutch pointed out that the Official Monster Raving Loony Party already had six.

Rannoch Moor (Scottish Gaelic: Mòinteach Raineach/Raithneach)is a large expanse of around 50 square miles (130 km²) of boggy moorland to the west of Loch Rannoch, in Perth and Kinross and Lochaber, Highland, partly northern Argyll and Bute, Scotland. Rannoch Moor is designated a National Heritage site.
It is notable for its wildlife, particularly famous for the sole British location for the Rannoch-rush, named after the moor. It was also frequently visited by Horace Donisthorpe, who collected many unusual species of ants on the moor and surrounding hilly ground. Today it is still one of the few remaining habitats for Formica exsecta, the 'narrow-headed ant', although recent surveys have failed to produce any sign of Formica pratensis, which Donisthorpe recorded in the area in the early part of the 20th century.
Peat deposits pose major difficulties to builders of roads and railways. When the West Highland Line was built across Rannoch Moor, its builders had to float the tracks on a mattress of tree roots, brushwood and thousands of tons of earth and ashes.
The very fast and furious A82 road crosses through Rannoch Moor on its way to Glen Coe and Fort William.
