Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PT - This photograph shows a tractor-pulled trailer transporting spectators from the Silverstone Woodlands camping area towards the main entrance gates of Silverstone Circuit during the Formula One British Grand Prix weekend. The improvised shuttle service provides a practical alternative to long walks across the expansive site, particularly valuable during busy arrival and departure periods.
The use of agricultural tractors and covered trailers reflects the rural setting of Silverstone and the temporary infrastructure required to support one of the UK's largest annual sporting events. Such transport solutions are common during major race weekends, helping manage pedestrian flow, improve accessibility, and reduce fatigue for campers carrying bags and supplies.
Passengers are seen boarding and disembarking in casual summer clothing under clear blue skies, reinforcing the relaxed, festival-style atmosphere that now surrounds modern Formula One events. The scene highlights the blend of countryside practicality and international motorsport spectacle that characterises the British Grand Prix.
Well suited for editorial use, this image documents event logistics, spectator experience, and the behind-the-scenes transport arrangements that enable large numbers of fans to move efficiently between camping areas and circuit facilities at Silverstone.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PW - This photograph shows large numbers of Formula One fans gathered in tightly packed queues at entrance gates to Silverstone Circuit, having walked in from surrounding car parking areas during the British Grand Prix weekend. The image captures the scale of attendance and the steady, patient movement of spectators as they wait to be processed through ticket and security checks.
The crowd is diverse in age and dress, with many fans carrying backpacks, drinks, and personal items for a full day at the circuit. Bright summer sunshine and clear blue skies reinforce the seasonal nature of the event and the festival-like atmosphere that surrounds the British Grand Prix, one of the UK's most popular annual sporting occasions.
Such scenes highlight the logistical challenge of managing tens of thousands of arrivals within short time windows, where crowd density, pedestrian flow, and safety must be carefully controlled. The image documents the behind-the-scenes reality of large-scale motorsport events, where arrival routes from car parks, queuing systems, and stewarding play a critical role in maintaining order and public safety.
Well suited for editorial use, this photograph illustrates crowd behaviour, event access planning, and the lived experience of attending Formula One at Silverstone, capturing both the anticipation and the practical realities faced by spectators before they reach the track.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PY - This photograph shows heavy congestion and long queues at an entrance gate to Silverstone Circuit during the Formula One British Grand Prix. Large numbers of spectators are held within temporary metal barriers as they wait to pass through controlled access points, illustrating the crowd density and operational pressures typical of peak arrival periods at major international sporting events.
The image captures a moment where pedestrian flow slows and compresses, emphasising the importance of effective crowd management, stewarding, and clear communication to maintain safety and prevent frustration. Bright summer weather and casual clothing underline the scale of attendance, while the tightly packed queues reflect the popularity of the British Grand Prix and the challenges of processing tens of thousands of visitors within limited time windows.
Entrance congestion of this kind highlights the logistical complexity of Formula One events, where security screening, ticket checks, and safety controls must balance speed with duty of care. The photograph provides strong documentary context for discussions around event planning, access design, and public safety at large UK sporting venues.
Well suited for editorial use, this image illustrates crowd behaviour, access bottlenecks, and the realities of managing spectator entry at one of the world's most famous motorsport circuits.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5RC - This photograph shows spectators queuing at an entrance to Silverstone Circuit during the Formula One British Grand Prix, waiting to pass through security screening on a clear and sunny morning. Long lines of fans are guided by temporary metal barriers towards controlled access points, reflecting the scale and organisation required to manage one of the UK's largest annual sporting events.
Security checks at major Formula One events typically include bag inspections and restrictions on items such as alcohol containers and prohibited objects, forming part of wider crowd safety and risk management arrangements. The visible queuing system and open terrain underline the logistical challenges of processing large volumes of people efficiently while maintaining public safety and a positive visitor experience.
The image captures the anticipation and atmosphere of race day, with spectators dressed for warm weather and moving steadily towards the circuit interior. Parked vehicles, fencing, and temporary infrastructure in the background illustrate the extensive operational footprint that surrounds a modern international motorsport event.
Well suited for editorial use, this photograph documents crowd behaviour, event security, and spectator management at a major UK sporting venue, highlighting the behind-the-scenes realities that support safe access to large-scale Formula One events.

The blue and white striped stall, topped with Union Jack flags and bold British branding, sells traditional confectionery and artisan fudge to racegoers moving through the circuit's spectator areas.
Food and drink vendors form an important part of the British Grand Prix experience, contributing to the festival atmosphere that surrounds modern Formula One events. Alongside the racing action, spectators spend time browsing merchandise and enjoying sweet treats, reflecting how large sporting events blend entertainment, retail, and leisure.
The image captures crowds of fans walking past the stall under clear summer skies, with temporary grandstands visible in the background at Stowe Corner, one of Silverstone's most recognisable trackside locations. The setting highlights the scale and commercial infrastructure required to support tens of thousands of visitors across a race weekend.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5RK - Lilium GmbH is a German aerospace company which is the developer of the Lilium Jet, an electrically powered personal air vehicle capable of VTOL flight.
History
Lilium GmbH was founded in 2015 by four engineers and PhD students at the Technical University of Munich, Daniel Wiegand, Sebastian Born, Matthias Meiner and Patrick Nathen.
The Lilium Eagle, an unmanned two-seat proof of concept model, performed its maiden flight at the airfield Mindelheim-Mattsies near Munich in Germany on 20 April 2017. The Lilium Jet five-seater prototype Phoenix first flew in May 2019. The prototype was powered by 36 electrically-powered jacketed-propellers mounted in movable flaps that can point down for vertical takeoff and gradually moved to a horizontal position to provide forward thrust. The five-seat Lilium Jet is capable of achieving a top speed of 300km/h and targets a range of 300 km
In January 2020 Aerokurier published a report which stated that Lilium could not meet its stated aircraft performance goals and would only be able to fly for two minutes at a time. The anonymously-authored report was dismissed by the company but later backed up by four German aerospace academics who wrote that Lilium was using brilliant PR to create an illusory world to attract investors.
In February 2021, Forbes published an article citing a number of former employees that stated the development of Lilium's aircraft was dogged by problems and that the flight test campaign made minimal progress

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5T1 - This image shows a Silverstone Formula One Medical Response Unit vehicle parked adjacent to pedestrian access routes during a British Grand Prix weekend at Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire. The clearly marked medical response car forms part of the extensive safety and emergency planning required to manage one of the UK's largest annual sporting events.
Formula One race weekends at Silverstone attract very large crowds over several days, placing significant emphasis on spectator welfare, rapid emergency response, and effective crowd management. Dedicated medical vehicles and trained response teams are strategically positioned around the circuit to ensure fast access to both trackside incidents and public areas used by fans.
The photograph captures spectators walking past the medical unit under clear summer skies, reinforcing the visible presence of safety infrastructure within the wider event environment. Temporary fencing, controlled access routes, and speed restriction signage illustrate the layered approach to risk management that underpins large-scale motorsport events.
Beyond the racing itself, the image highlights the operational realities of hosting international sporting events, where emergency preparedness, duty of care, and public safety are as critical as sporting spectacle. It is well suited for editorial use covering motorsport safety, event management, emergency services, and crowd protection at major UK sporting venues.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5W2 - This image shows a large Google Chrome branded ferris wheel installed at Silverstone Circuit during the Formula One British Grand Prix in July 2023. Set against a vivid blue summer sky, the observation wheel rises above crowds of racegoers moving through the circuit's entertainment and hospitality areas, adding a festival-like atmosphere to one of the UK's biggest annual sporting events.
Temporary attractions such as ferris wheels, funfair stalls, and branded entertainment zones have become a familiar part of modern Formula One weekends, reflecting the sport's evolution into a global lifestyle and entertainment spectacle. The prominent Google Chrome colour scheme highlights the role of major international technology brands in motorsport sponsorship and event marketing.
The dense crowd below, dressed for warm weather, conveys the scale and popularity of the British Grand Prix, which regularly attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors across the race weekend. The image captures not just the racing itself, but the wider social experience of attending Formula One at Silverstone, where motorsport, branding, leisure, and mass participation intersect.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5W8 - This photograph shows crowds of spectators walking along Hamilton Straight at Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire, with the Silverstone Megastore and the Hilton Silverstone hotel prominently visible. Taken on a bright summer day under clear blue skies, the image captures the scale and modern character of one of the world's most famous motorsport venues.
Hamilton Straight forms the main start and finish straight of Silverstone Circuit and is a focal point during major events such as Formula One, MotoGP, and international endurance racing. The contemporary architecture of the Hilton Silverstone hotel, designed to overlook the track, reflects the circuit's transformation from a historic post-war airfield into a global motorsport destination combining racing, hospitality, retail, and tourism.
The presence of large numbers of casually dressed spectators conveys the atmosphere of a major race weekend, with fans moving between grandstands, retail areas, and hospitality spaces. The wide concourse, grassy margins, and open setting emphasise the scale of the site and its ability to accommodate tens of thousands of visitors during peak events.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PR - This image shows winners of a charity auction posing with illustrated pub signs from The Petrol Head, a themed pop-up pub at Silverstone Woodlands camping during the 2023 Formula 1 British Grand Prix weekend.
The Petrol Head pub formed part of the temporary festival-style facilities provided for F1 fans staying at the Woodlands campsite near Silverstone Circuit.
As part of the event, a selection of bespoke, illustrated pub signs created specifically for the pop-up venue were auctioned to raise money for charity.
The auction took place during the race weekend, with all proceeds from the sale of the signs donated to charitable causes supported by the organisers.
Such charity auctions are a regular feature of large UK motorsport camping events, combining memorabilia, fan engagement, and fundraising in an informal social setting.
The two winning bidders are shown holding their purchased signs immediately after the auction, marking both the fundraising success and the temporary nature of the installation.
The event highlights how major sporting weekends such as the British Grand Prix often include community-focused fundraising activities alongside entertainment and hospitality.
While the pub itself existed only for the duration of the F1 weekend, the auctioned signs became lasting keepsakes linked to a specific moment in the 2023 British Grand Prix.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M95NKR - The entrance gates to the Sailors' Home were elaborate decorative pieces of ironwork which served the dual purpose of protecting the Savings Bank and keeping out seamen who might wish to gain entry to the Home after the strict 10 pm curfew.
By April 1852 the lower sections of the gates had been installed, decorated with a combination of elements from the interior balconies
four great panels of rope-work with central mermaid and trident figures identical to those inside. The two outer panels were fixed whilst the two centre sections rolled behind them on rails where they were hidden from sight while the Home was open for business.
The iron-work of the lower gates, produced a solid, intimidating aspect compared with the much lighter appearance of the balcony railings. The huge mass of iron made an impassable barrier but also a massive weight and it would have taken some effort to slide the gates open and close.

1907: The Tragic Death of Constable Locke
In the Annals of the Sailors' Home, printed in the Home's annual report for the year 1935, against the year 1907 was the following entry: November - Police Officer Locke killed through front gate falling upon him.
Early on the morning of Sunday 24 November, nearly an hour after midnight, Police constable number 324A, Brownlow Locke, of the Liverpool City Constabulary, met his death in a very strange and unexpected manner.

As part of the repair to War Damage following the Liverpool Blitz it was decided to remove the gates. On 25 March 1948 W & T Avery who had swallowed-up Pooley's and Sons were offered the gates by the Sailors' Home Committee. On 18 May 1949 Avery's made an offer of 50 guineas for the gates, which was accepted on 3 May. 1951.

The assembly Room on the upper floor was added later. It became the county court building and this is the name by which it is best remembered.
When the county court moved to the new combined courts building, this building was put on the market and became a night club, called Chancellors, and currently goes under the name of Walkabout.
The main court room furniture was given by the purchasers to Wolverhampton Law School, at the University, where it was reassembled as a moot court.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K546YH - The British Rail Class 158 Express Sprinter is a diesel multiple unit (DMU) passenger train. It is a member of the Sprinter series of regional trains, produced as a replacement for British Rail's first generation of DMUs
of the other members, the Class 159 is almost identical to the Class 158, having been converted from Class 158 to Class 159 in two batches to operate express services from London Waterloo to the West of England.
The Class 158 was constructed between 1989 and 1992 by British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL) at its Derby Litchurch Lane Works. The majority were built as two-car sets, some three-car sets were also produced. During September 1990, the first Express Sprinters were operated by ScotRail
the type was promptly introduced to secondary routes across the Midlands, Northern England, Wales and the South West. The Class 158 enabled the replacement of large numbers of elderly DMUs but also several locomotive-hauled trains as well
this was partially accomplished via the cascading of existing Sprinter units onto other routes. To capitalise on the Class 158's improved onboard amenities in comparison to other rolling stock in use for regional services, the Alphaline branding was launched during the mid-1990s
it was also used for a time in the post-privatisation era.
As a result of British Rail's privatisation in the mid 1990s, the Class 158s were divided amongst various newly-created operators broadly along their existing routes. Due to their relatively young age at that time, most operators elected to retain them for the following decades. Several, such as Northern Rail and Arriva Trains Wales, had their Class 158 fleets modernised and refitted with various new facilities, such modifications often including greater accessibility, onboard passenger information systems, WiFi connectivity, and toilet retention tanks.

line extension work at Pipers Row earlier this year - trams won't be running until at least spring 2023
The Metro extension to Wolverhampton Railway Station will not be completed until spring 2023 due to unforeseen supply chain constraints delaying the project another five months.
The ?35 million project was originally meant to be completed in 2020 but was delayed by 18 months due to construction work at the railway station. Metro bosses then hoped the 720-metre extension would be ready for the Commonwealth Games in July but pushed back the opening date until autumn 2022.
Deputy leader of Wolverhampton Council Councillor Stephen Simkins has called the latest delay a catastrophe.
Midlands Metro Alliance director Peter Cushing blamed complexities of installing the systems needed to run the trams down Pipers Row and supply chain problems.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K5470Y - Wolverhampton bus station is the first part of a major public transport interchange in the city centre of Wolverhampton, in the West Midlands region of England.
It is managed by Transport for West Midlands (TfWM). Local bus services operated by various companies serve the bus station which has 19 departure stands and 1 unloading stand. The bus station is located halfway between Wolverhampton, St George's West Midlands Metro tram terminus and Wolverhampton railway station
both are just a short walk away. It also features glass-enclosed waiting areas and electronic doors, allowing passengers out of designated pedestrian areas, only when buses are on stand. Uniquely, the designs for the station have meant that there is no need for buses and pedestrians paths to cross, due to the 'W' shape of the station.
The bus station's enquiry office is now in the main building, but was in the Queen's Building, a grade II listed building, now host to Costa Coffee, but which was formerly the carriage entrance to the railway station.
The original bus station was on the northern side of Railway Drive approximately where the Ring Road passes under the present road bridge. It was primarily used by Midland Red although a few WMPTE (ex-Midland Red) services also departed from there.
The station, which had existed since 1986, was closed after service finished on 3 April 2010. (The 1986 bus station replaced the original bus station on the northern side of Railway Drive.) Building work took place during the ensuing months, in which a new pedestrian bridge linking the railway and bus stations was built, a contraflow system installed along the ring road and the bus station rebuilt. The station re-opened on 24 July 2011, which coincided with the Wolverhampton bus network review and marked the end of Phase One of the project. Phase Two includes improvements to the railway station, a new hotel, and redevelopment of the canalside area, but a date for this has yet to be finalised.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K54711 - The Wright Eclipse is a low-floor single-deck bus body that was built by Wrightbus between 1999 and 2019. The second-generation Eclipse 2 was launched in 2008, followed by the third-generation Eclipse 3 in 2015. The Eclipse, and its sister design the Solar, were named for a solar eclipse which was visible in the UK in 1999, the year of its introduction.
The Eclipse was launched in 1999 on Volvo B7L chassis and, in 2003, the body was made available on the more popular Volvo B7RLE chassis. A coach version, the Eclipse SchoolRun, was later launched on high floor Volvo B7R chassis. In November 2008, Wright unveiled the Eclipse 2 at that year's Euro Bus Expo, with front and rear ends facelifted to match the Wright StreetCar. In 2015, the Eclipse 3 was launched on Volvo B8RLE chassis, the successor to the B7RLE. Production of the Eclipse has been suspended as Wrightbus entered administration in September 2019.
Over 2,100 Eclipses were built, with FirstGroup the largest customer. A double-decker version of the Eclipse is also available, known as the Wright Eclipse Gemini, and formerly also an articulated version, the Wright Eclipse Fusion.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M6GB2J - The Mander Centre is a major shopping centre in Wolverhampton City Centre, in Wolverhampton, England, developed by Manders Holdings Plc, the paint, inks and property conglomerate, between 1968 and 1974. The site occupies four and a half acres comprising the old Georgian works and offices of the Mander family firm, founded in 1773, as well as the site of the former Queens Arcade (promoted privately by Charles Tertius Mander), which had stood on the site since 1902.
When the main part of the Mander Centre opened in 1968, the Central Arcade retained its Edwardian architecture and was refurbished as the main entrance to the Mander Centre from Dudley Street.
In May 1974 the Central Arcade was destroyed by a severe fire that reduced it to rubble, which was declared unsafe and was subsequently demolished. The area was later rebuilt as the entrance to the centre
The centre was refurbished in 1987, when it was described as a covered pedestrianised shopping complex at the centre of the principal shopping area of Wolverhampton with more than 150 shops.
In 2003 the centre embarked on a further multi-million pound refurbishment programme. It was an opportunity to complete the enclosure of the centre to make it fully climate controlled. The marble floor in the entire centre was replaced along with the relocation of the escalators and stairways. The biggest change was the creation of the large New Look store which took over numerous stores.
Throughout 2016 and 2017, the centre was refurbished and configured as part of the ?25 million investment, and a series of new larger stores was created, forcing some stores to close down and relocate within the centre. WH Smith and Tesco were closed, and Superdrug relocated. The reconfiguration was also to include new escalators and lifts, the removal of the Lower Central Arcade and the relocation of the toilets.
On 18 November 2016 H&M was the first major store to open as part of the shopping centre's multimillion-pound redevelopment.

On 7 June 2018, it was announced that the last branch which had retained the Beatties name, the former head office in Wolverhampton, was to close in 2019. Former Beatties-branded House of Fraser stores in Aylesbury, Birkenhead, Telford and Worcester were also announced to close.
Despite the CVA, Mike Ashley started saving stores on the basis of whether they could cut rent to achieve a specific margin. The Telford branch proposed closure was repealed on 23 August 2018, the first to be repealed. As of December 2018, all ?Beatties' currently trading are announced to be remaining open.
Beatties was founded in 1877 and had grown from a small family drapery business in Wolverhampton to a department store with an excellent reputation for customer service. The Company Policy (known as the Four Corners of Responsibility) stated that the responsibility to the customer

The association was represented at the 70th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy in June 2014. Due to dwindling numbers the association decided to disband in November 2014. The last official engagement of the association took place at St Margaret's, Westminster (Westminster Abbey) on 16 October 2014.
The National Standard of the NVA was 'laid up' at Westminster Abbey with a plaque that reads:

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M6GBP0 - Wolverhampton Civic Centre is a municipal building in the City of Wolverhampton, West Midlands, England. The building houses a council chamber for City of Wolverhampton Council.
The new building, which was designed by Clifford Culpin & Partners in the Postmodern style and built by Taylor Woodrow Construction, was completed in 1978. It was officially opened by the Prime Minister James Callaghan on 24 February 1979.The design, which involved a stepped profile for the building and located it on a large piazza, has similarities with the Panch Mahal in Fatehpur Sikri. It received a Civic Trust Award in 1979.
Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh visited the civic centre and met with civic leaders on 24 June 1994 and signed the visitors' book before departing for a tour of the new Molineux Stadium. Environmental works to improve the open area between the civic centre and St Peter's Collegiate Church were carried out with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund between 1996 and 2004.
A substantial programme of restoration works for the civic centre and its car park, to a design by Associated Architects, was carried out by Speller Metcalfe at a cost of ?22 million and completed in 2018. The restoration work involved changes to the interior layout to create an open-plan environment: it also included creation of a new customer service centre on the ground floor

A portrait of the British Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone 2019. Project supported by Sky Sport F1
To celebrate his stunning achievements, a mural has been unveiled at Silverstone, the home of the British Grand Prix.
Sky Sports F1 - the home of live and exclusive F1 - hired artist James Cochran , who also created the famous David Bowie mural in Brixton - to design the piece to celebrate Hamilton's latest title crown.
The impressive-looking painting displays Hamilton in his Mercedes gear, with the Union Jack acting as a stunning backdrop.
The mural has been emblazoned on a section of a wall at the world famous Silverstone circuit, a track which has seen Sir Lewis Hamilton triumph a record six times.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JFXKG9 - The race started at 15:00 local time on 3 July. Max Verstappen took the lead at the start from Carlos Sainz Jr., while Lewis Hamilton moved up to third. George Russell had a bad start and was passed by Nicholas Latifi and Zhou Guanyu pulled alongside him leaving a large gap between them. Gasly attempted to pass between Zhou and Russell, but Russell moved to the left too late to close the gap causing his left rear tyre to make contact with Gasly's right front. Gasly backed out but the impact pointed Russell's car to the left shooting him across the track and directly into the side of Zhou's car. The impact launched Zhou's car into the air. He landed upside down, skidding down the track, then skipping and bouncing across the long gravel trap at the end of the straightaway, all while barely slowing and turning sideways. The inverted car suddenly dug into the gravel carrying sufficient speed and momentum to launch it over the tire barrier, rotating 540 degrees on its axis before hitting the catch fencing sideways facing up just a few feet from the front row of the grandstand. It then dropped 8 feet and landed wedged into the small gap between the fence and tire barrier, stopping on its side with the cockpit up against the backside of the tire barrier. As a result of the incident, Valtteri Bottas slowed slightly, which caused Alexander Albon to also slow. Sebastian Vettel attempted to brake, but was too close to Albon and hit him. Albon spun into the concrete pit wall, rebounded back on the track and was hit by Yuki Tsunoda and Esteban Ocon, damaging both of their cars. Tsunoda and Ocon both returned to the pit lane for repairs, but Albon was unable to continue. Russell, who had spun, stopped to help the marshalls with Zhou's flipped car. When he returned to his car it was not running so he could not continue.
Race control red-flagged the race due to both crashes. Zhou was extracted from his Alfa Romeo and stretchered to an ambulance

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JG21YW - The Red Arrows, officially known as the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, is the aerobatics display team of the Royal Air Force (RAF) based at RAF Waddington. The team was formed in late 1964 as an all-RAF team, replacing a number of unofficial teams that had been sponsored by RAF commands.
The Red Arrows have a prominent place in British popular culture, with their aerobatic displays a fixture of British summer events. The badge of the Red Arrows shows the aircraft in their trademark diamond nine formation, with the motto ??clat, a French word meaning brilliance or excellence.
Initially, they were equipped with seven Folland Gnat trainers inherited from the RAF Yellowjacks display team. This aircraft was chosen because it was less expensive to operate than front-line fighters. In their first season, they flew at 65 shows across Europe. In 1966, the team was increased to nine members, enabling them to develop their Diamond Nine formation. In late 1979, they switched to the BAE Hawk trainer. The Red Arrows have performed over 4,800 displays in 57 countries worldwide

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JG2205 - Bumper cars or dodgems are the generic names for a type of flat amusement ride consisting of multiple small electrically powered cars which draw power from the floor and/or ceiling, and which are turned on and off remotely by an operator. Bumper cars were not intended to be bumped, hence the original name Dodgem. They are also known as bumping cars, dodging cars and dashing cars. The first patent for bumper cars was filed in 1921
The cars are commonly powered by one of three methods. The oldest and most common method, the Over Head System (OHS), uses a conductive floor and ceiling with opposing power polarities. Contacts under the vehicle touch the floor while a pole-mounted contact shoe touches the ceiling, forming a complete circuit.
A newer method, the Floor Pick-Up (FPU) system, uses alternating strips of metal across the floor separated by insulating spacers, and no ceiling grid. The strips carry the supply current, and the cars are large enough so that the vehicle covers at least two strips at all times. An array of brushes under each car makes random contact with the strips, and the voltage polarity on each contact is arranged to always provide a correct and complete circuit to operate the vehicle.
A third method is used on Quantum-class cruise ships, where bumper cars run on electric batteries. This avoids the conductive floor/ceiling of the traditional bumper car setup, allowing the SeaPlex venue to be convertible from a bumper-car ride to a multipurpose gym (basketball court). The disadvantage is that these ships' bumper cars take several hours to recharge.
The metal floor is usually set up as a rectangular or oval track, and graphite is sprinkled on the floor to decrease friction. A rubber bumper surrounds each vehicle, and drivers either ram or dodge each other as they travel. The controls are usually an accelerator and a steering wheel. The cars can be made to go backwards by turning the steering wheel far enough in either direction

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JG2211 - HG Construction has been appointed as the main contractor on an exclusive new trackside scheme, Escapade Silverstone.
The landmark scheme for Escapade will transform the trackside at the iconic Silverstone racetrack with 60 contemporary new residences and a clubhouse designed by renowned architecture firm Twelve Architects. The Escapade residences, which are available to purchase as an owner or stay in as a guest, have been billed as the ultimate experience for trackside enthusiasts, offering spacious, modern accommodation and driver-focused leisure facilities coupled with impressive views of the circuit.
The residences will offer guests light-filled entertaining spaces, high specification acoustics and ensuite bathrooms, in addition to car parking. The two-storey clubhouse will boast an indoor swimming pool and sauna along with treatment rooms on the ground floor, with floor-to-ceiling windows and comfortable dining facilities on the first floor as well as an 8.5 metre-high roof terrace. Other amenities include a performance-focused gym and a private briefing room designed to enhance the year-round visitor experience at the UK's only Grade 1 circuit.
Adam Quinn, Managing Director, HG Construction said: This is a really exciting project for HG Construction to be involved in given its iconic location and unique design. Twelve Architects have produced a sleek and stylish architectural concept which will complement and enhance the exceptional surroundings, and we are delighted to be bringing it to life on behalf of Escapade. We have worked closely with the client to ensure that the bespoke elements of the scheme are delivered in the most efficient and effective way possible, and we look forward to seeing the buildings emerge over the next few months.
Will Tindall, Founder & CEO of Escapade, commented: The opportunity to create something truly special at Silverstone - see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gl7zhtKPibw

Opened on 30 May 1999, it consists of a single route, Line 1, which operates between the cities of Birmingham and Wolverhampton via the towns of West Bromwich and Wednesbury, running on a mixture of reopened disused railway line (the Birmingham Snow Hill to Wolverhampton Low Level Line) and on-street running in urban areas. The line originally terminated at Birmingham Snow Hill station, but with extensions opened in 2015 and 2019, now runs into Birmingham City Centre to terminate at Library in Centenary Square, with a further extension to Edgbaston due to open in 2021.
The system is owned by the public body Transport for West Midlands, and operated through Midland Metro Ltd, a company wholly owned by the West Midlands Combined Authority
Line 1 is a standard gauge double-track tramway. Trams are driven manually under a mix of line-of-sight and signals. Turnback crossovers along the line, including in the street section, have point indicators.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy W42N8R - Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton MBE (born 7 January 1985) is a British racing driver who races in Formula One for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport. A five-time Formula One World Champion, he is often considered the best driver of his generation and widely regarded as one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport. He won his first World Championship title with McLaren in 2008, then moved to Mercedes where he won back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015 before winning back-to-back titles again in 2017 and 2018. The most successful British driver in the history of the sport, Hamilton has more World Championship titles (5) and more race victories (80) than any other British driver in Formula One. He also holds records for the all-time most career points (3,241), the most wins at different circuits, the all-time most pole positions (86) and the most grand slams in a season (3).
Born and raised in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, Hamilton's interest in racing started when his father bought him a radio-controlled car when he was six. He was signed to McLaren's young driver support programme in 1998, after he approached McLaren team principal Ron Dennis at an awards ceremony three years earlier and said one day I want to be racing your cars. After winning the British Formula Renault, Formula 3 Euro Series, and GP2 championships on his way up the racing career ladder, he made his Formula One debut twelve years after his initial encounter with Dennis, driving for McLaren in 2007. Coming from a mixed background, with a black father and white mother, Hamilton is the first and only black driver to race in Formula One

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy W42N80 - Kimi-Matias R??ikk??nen (Finnish pronunciation: [??kimi ??m?ti?s ??r??ik???nen]
born 17 October 1979), nicknamed Iceman, is a Finnish racing driver currently driving in Formula One for Alfa Romeo Racing. He won the 2007 Formula One World Championship in his first season at Scuderia Ferrari. After nine seasons racing in Formula One he left the sport to compete in the World Rally Championship in 2010 and 2011, returning to Formula One from 2012. In addition to this title, R??ikk??nen also finished second overall in 2003 and 2005, and third in 2008, 2012 and 2018. R??ikk??nen has won 21 Grands Prix, making him the most successful Finnish driver in terms of Formula One race wins. He is the only driver to take a race win in the V10, V8 and the hybrid V6 engine eras.
R??ikk??nen entered Formula One as a regular driver for Sauber-Petronas in 2001, having competed in only 23 car races previously. He joined McLaren Mercedes in 2002, and became a title contender by finishing runner-up in the championship to Michael Schumacher in 2003, and Fernando Alonso in 2005. R??ikk??nen's 2002, 2004 and 2006 seasons were plagued by severe unreliability from his McLaren cars, prompting a move to Ferrari in 2007. This change saw him crowned Formula One World Drivers' Champion that season, pipping both McLaren drivers?Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso?to the title by just one point. In 2008 he equalled the record for the greatest number of fastest laps in a season for the second time.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DE01 - Designed to provide the best of the land on the water the yacht-houses are modelled on modern streamline motor yachts yet appointed to allow high ceilings, excellent natural light, picture windows on the upper floor and wrap around windows on the lower floor.
From their secure residential moorings, they afford excellent views up and down the river with minimal windows on the side to allow almost complete privacy. Lighting is enhanced by shards of roof window that allow daylight along the sides. This, the middle of the three vessels, is also air conditioned and designed to compliment their unique setting. The superb Kingston town centre is a short walk away and Hampton Wick (over ground) is the closest station.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DE1M - Kingston upon Thames, also known as Kingston, is the principal settlement of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames in southwest London. It was the ancient market town where Saxon kings were crowned. Kingston is situated 10 miles (16.1 km) southwest of Charing Cross and is one of the major metropolitan centres identified in the London Plan.
Kingston lies approximately 10 metres (33 ft) above sea level. Kingston was part of a large ancient parish in the county of Surrey and the town was an ancient borough, reformed in 1835. It has been the location of Surrey County Hall from 1893, extraterritorially in terms of local government administration since Kingston became part of Greater London in 1965. Most of the town centre is part of the KT1 postcode area, but some areas north of Kingston railway station have the postcode KT2 instead. The population of the town itself, comprising the four wards of Canbury, Grove, Norbiton and Tudor, was 43,013 in the 2011 census

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F0XDA9 - Silverstone Circuit is a motor racing circuit in England next to the Northamptonshire villages of Silverstone and Whittlebury. The circuit straddles the Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire border, with the current main circuit entry on the Buckinghamshire side. The Northamptonshire towns of Towcester (5 miles) and Brackley (7 miles) and Buckinghamshire town of Buckingham (6 miles) are close by, and the nearest large towns are Northampton and Milton Keynes.
Silverstone is the current home of the British Grand Prix, which it first hosted in 1948. The 1950 British Grand Prix at Silverstone was the first race in the newly created World Championship of Drivers.[5] The race rotated between Silverstone, Aintree and Brands Hatch from 1955 to 1986, but relocated permanently to Silverstone in 1987.

Forty-Four 44 is a tribonacci number, an octahedral number and the number of derangements of 5 items. Its the code for international direct dial phone calls to the United Kingdom. You can travel from Texas to Missouri on interstate 44.
In the song 44 fours by Jay Z, who I believe is a closet maths addict, he rhymes the words four, for and fore 44 times. This song is a follow up from the song 22 two's. 44 is the number of candles in a box of Hanukkah candles.
In Bilston, West Midlands, stall 44 is the one for misshapen biscuits, Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. See you there!

Anyone who know what I am talking about will probably have experience of twisted pair spaghetti, as does occur as a computer or equipment room matures.
If you are not a techie you may want to have a look at this instead www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3804831303/ . If you have patch panel envy, read on....
This patch bay was designed and built by Martin Donnison of fordway.com. It supports over five sites and upwards of 1,000 users.
Rackmounted panels, house cable connections. One short patch cable generally plugs into the front side, whereas the back holds the connection of a much longer and more permanent cable. Hardware assemblies are arranged so that a number of circuits or network connections can be supported. They were invented or evolved for early telephone exchanges.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JFNH8N - Crash at the Silverstone British F1 Grand Prix 03/07/2022 at 1st corner
The race started at 15:00 local time on 3 July. Max Verstappen took the lead at the start from Carlos Sainz Jr., while Lewis Hamilton moved up to third. Zhou Guanyu and George Russell both experienced poor starts and were passed by Nicholas Latifi. Gasly attempted to pass between Zhou and Russell, but Russell moved to the left in an attempt to keep position. Subsequently, Gasly and Russell made contact and caused Russell to lose control and hit Zhou. The impact flipped Zhou's car and he skid across the track upside down. His car bounced over the tyre barrier, hit the protection fence and came to a rest between the fence and tyre barrier. As a result of the incident, Valtteri Bottas slowed slightly, which caused Alexander Albon to also slow. Sebastian Vettel attempted to brake, but was too close to Albon and hit him. Albon spun into the concrete pit wall, rebounded back on the track and was hit by Yuki Tsunoda and Esteban Ocon, both of whom received damage but were able to return to the pits. However, Albon was unable to continue. Russell, who had spun, stopped to help the marshalls with Zhou's flipped car. When he returned to his car, he failed to turn the engine on and was forced to retire.
Race control red-flagged the race due to both crashes. Zhou was extracted from his Alfa Romeo and stretchered to an ambulance where he was taken to the race medical centre. Albon was also taken to the race medical centre but was later transferred by helicopter to Coventry Hospital for observations. Both were later released

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JFXKG8 - The race started at 15:00 local time on 3 July.
