Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3F12C96 - Johnny Marr performs at Castlefield Bowl in Manchester during Sounds of the City on Thursday 9 July 2026, framed beneath an enormous live projection of his face. The guitarist, singer and songwriter stands at the microphone with a black Fender Jaguar while his drummer plays behind him. Green and pale gold beams pass through stage haze, merging Marr's figure with the softly focused portrait on the screen and producing a striking, dreamlike double image.
Marr appears relatively small at the foot of the stage while his magnified expression fills the background, turning a concert photograph into a layered portrait of an artist confronting his public image. Muted colours and drifting light create an ethereal atmosphere, while the guitar, microphone and drum kit keep the scene rooted in a live rock show.
The sold-out Castlefield appearance was promoted as Marr's largest solo headline concert to date. Support came from Everything Everything and Irish post-punk band The Clockworks. His career-spanning set combined solo material with songs by The Smiths and Electronic, including This Charming Man, Bigmouth Strikes Again, Getting Away With It, How Soon Is Now?, Panic and There Is a Light That Never Goes Out. New songs anticipated his fifth solo album, The Age of Everything.
Marr's chiming guitar style helped define The Smiths and influenced British independent and alternative music. Performing in his home city gives the photograph added resonance, connecting his continuing solo career with Manchester's musical history.
Castlefield Bowl is an open-air amphitheatre among canals, railway viaducts and former industrial buildings. The photograph captures spectacle, introspection and hometown identity in one frame: the working musician below, the monumental cultural icon above and the unseen Manchester audience beyond the camera

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3F12DBF - Ghostly monochrome portrait of Johnny Marr fills the stage screen as the Manchester guitarist, singer and songwriter performs below at Castlefield Bowl during Sounds of the City on Thursday 9 July 2026. Marr stands at the microphone playing electric guitar, with his drummer behind him. Stage haze, converging beams and the enlarged face create an atmospheric double image in which the live musician appears almost overshadowed by his projected likeness.
The sold-out homecoming concert was announced as Marr's biggest-ever solo headline show. Support came from Manchester band Everything Everything and Irish post-punk group The Clockworks. His career-spanning performance combined solo recordings, new material and songs associated with The Smiths, the influential Manchester group in which Marr established his reputation through distinctive melodic and jangling guitar arrangements.
The stark black-and-white treatment gives the scene a timeless, cinematic quality. Marr's smaller figure at the foot of the screen contrasts with the monumental, softly focused portrait above, suggesting memory, legacy and the passage of time. The composition can be read as a visual dialogue between the younger musician embedded in popular culture and the established solo artist still performing to his hometown audience.
Castlefield Bowl is an open-air amphitheatre surrounded by canals, railway viaducts and Manchester's former industrial landscape. It is closely associated with the annual Sounds of the City concert series and summer performances. Marr's appearance carried local resonance because his work with The Smiths helped place Manchester independent music on an international stage.
The photograph captures a distinctive concert performance. Its spectral projection, stage smoke and reduced tonal palette turn live music documentation into an evocative portrait of artistic identity, cultural memory and the enduring relationship between Johnny Marr, his songs and Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3F12E8A - Johnny Marr performs with his arms stretched wide at Castlefield Bowl in Manchester during the Sounds of the City concert series on Thursday 9 July 2026. The former Smiths guitarist and songwriter stands at the microphone with a black Fender Jaguar electric guitar, while the drummer plays behind him. Purple stage lighting, a large monochrome video screen and Marr's expressive pose give the photograph the scale and energy of a major outdoor headline show.
The sold-out concert was billed as the biggest solo headline performance of Marr's career. It was a significant Manchester homecoming for an artist whose distinctive melodic guitar work helped define The Smiths and influenced generations of alternative and independent musicians. The set combined Marr's solo catalogue, celebrated Smiths songs and new material linked to his forthcoming fifth solo album, The Age of Everything.
Songs reported from the evening included Generate! Generate!, New Town Velocity, Spirit Power and Soul, This Charming Man, Bigmouth Strikes Again, How Soon Is Now?, Panic and There Is a Light That Never Goes Out. The performance connected Marr's current work with the music that established his international reputation. His outstretched stance captures the relationship between performer and hometown audience at an important point in his solo career.
Support came from Manchester band Everything Everything and Irish post-punk group The Clockworks. Castlefield Bowl is an open-air amphitheatre set among canals, railway viaducts and former industrial buildings, giving Sounds of the City concerts a distinctive Manchester character.
The image records an influential British guitarist commanding the stage at his largest solo concert to date. It combines live performance, local music heritage, festival production and popular culture, while showing Marr not only as a former member of The Smiths but as an active recording artist introducing new work to a large multi-generational audience

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EME6K2 - 6 June 2026, this live music photograph shows Black Desert performing on stage at Warrington Music Festival in Warrington town centre, Cheshire, England. The image captures the young North West alternative or grunge band in a full band set-up with vocalist and guitarist at centre stage, drummer behind, bassist to the right and another guitarist to the left, framed by amplifiers, monitors, lighting rigs and a large screen displaying the band's name. Festival branding for Warrington Music Fest is visible on both sides of the stage, placing the performance within a free public town-centre event designed to draw crowds into the local retail and leisure area. The stage appears to be a temporary outdoor festival installation, with surrounding buildings visible beyond the performance area, helping to root the image in an urban shopping and civic setting rather than a conventional indoor venue. The scene has value as a documentary image of emerging grassroots music culture in the North West, showing how local festivals give developing bands a platform in front of a broader public audience. It is also useful for editorial themes around youth culture, live entertainment, gig promotion, town-centre regeneration, community events, local identity and the role of arts programming in boosting footfall for shops, bars and hospitality businesses. Warrington Music Festival has become part of the town's wider seasonal events offer, using central public space to showcase local and regional acts and to strengthen the area's cultural profile. For picture buyers, the combination of a named band, readable stage screen, instruments, performance energy and clearly branded event context makes this suitable for stories about unsigned bands, North West music scenes, independent live performance, cultural tourism, festival listings, entertainment previews and reviews, and the changing relationship between retail destinations and public events in English town centres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJD0CY - Live music photograph shows Dave Formula and Noko performing on the 2026 Floorboards tour at Manchester Academy 2 on 23 May 2026, with Peter Petersen of the French band Affection Place on vocals and Dave Tomlinson, better known as Dave Formula, at the keyboards and synthesisers. The wide stage view captures Noko on guitar at the left, Petersen at centre microphone, Formula seated among keyboards and music stands to the right, plus drum kit, amplifiers, monitor wedges and blue and purple stock-photo/gotonysmith-Lighting.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>lighting across the venue. The image has clear editorial value because it records a contemporary live performance built around the legacy of Magazine, one of Manchester's defining post-punk bands. Event listings for the tour described Magazine's Dave Formula and Noko presenting classic songs from the Magazine catalogue, including material associated with the band's celebrated post-punk and new wave period. Formula's keyboard textures were central to Magazine's tense, dramatic sound, while Noko's later role with the group connected the performance to the band's longer history and continuing audience. The Manchester date adds resonance because Magazine emerged from the city's late 1970s music scene after Howard Devoto left Buzzcocks, and Manchester Academy remains a major live venue for alternative, indie and heritage acts. This photograph can illustrate features on Magazine, post-punk revival, Manchester music history, live concert photography, veteran musicians still touring, keyboard-led rock, synth performance, new wave, art rock, cult music audiences and intergenerational live performance. For stock image buyers, the value lies in the named artists, precise venue and date, strong lighting, clear stage layout and recognisable concert atmosphere. It works well for editorial use around the continuing appeal of Magazine's songbook, the enduring influence of Manchester post-punk, and the way classic independent music is being reinterpreted on modern stages.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3F0W4MP - Will Crewdson performs his solo project Scant Regard live at Manchester Academy 2 on 23 May 2026, opening the evening for Dave Formula and Noko's full-band celebration of songs from Magazine's influential post-punk catalogue. Photographed tightly from the audience, the London-based guitarist, writer and producer is shown singing into a stage microphone while playing a distinctive metallic blue electric guitar. He wears a short-sleeved black shirt with a contrasting leopard-print panel, a chain necklace and a dark guitar strap, creating a strong visual match for the project's flamboyant, genre-crossing performance style.
Purple and deep-blue concert lighting dominates the background, while a yellow-green beam catches the performer's hair, arm and instrument. Crewdson's concentrated expression, direct position at the microphone and hand placement on the guitar convey the intensity and physical energy of a live club performance. Part of the drum kit is visible at the right edge, placing the portrait firmly within the stage environment without distracting from the musician.
Scant Regard is Crewdson's one-man, guitar-led solo identity, combining electronic rhythms with elements of punk, surf rock, rockabilly, industrial funk, dub and cinematic soundtrack music. Beyond this project, he is widely associated with guitar work for Adam Ant, The Selecter, Rachel Stamp, Flesh for Lulu, Gaye Bykers on Acid, Johnette Napolitano and She Made Me Do It. The Manchester date formed the final night of the May 2026 Dave Formula tour and took place inside the University of Manchester Students' Union building on Oxford Road. The image documents an established British alternative guitarist supporting musicians connected with Magazine, one of Manchester's defining post-punk groups, in an intimate university concert venue

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E91E9P - Live music editorial photograph of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets performing at Albert Hall Manchester on 27 February 2026, showing guitarists on stage under dark concert lighting with drums, microphone stands, cables, pedals and spare electric guitars visible across the performance area. The Australian psychedelic rock band, originally formed in Perth, are strongly associated with colourful, high-energy psych rock, fuzz guitar, garage rock, progressive rock textures and fast, distorted live performances. The right-hand performer appears to be singing or playing lead guitar at the microphone, but the individual should only be named as Jack McEwan if confirmed by the photographer's own notes or venue accreditation, because person identity cannot be verified from this image alone.
The image is suitable for editorial coverage of contemporary Australian rock, UK touring, Manchester concerts, live music photography, independent venues, gig culture and psychedelic music. Albert Hall, a Grade II listed former Wesleyan chapel converted into a major Manchester music venue, gives the performance additional cultural context as part of the city's live music scene. The dark background, spotlight, red stage tones and visible instruments create a strong documentary atmosphere, useful for articles about touring bands, guitar music, alternative music, psych rock revival, music journalism, concert reviews, festival line-ups and the experience of live performance.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E91E9K - Black and white editorial concert photograph of House of All performing live at YES in Manchester on 22 November 2025. The image shows an intense on-stage moment, with the guitarist in the foreground under bright venue lighting and the drummer visible behind, creating a strong documentary feel that suits coverage of contemporary post-punk, alternative rock and the enduring musical legacy of former members of The Fall. The monochrome treatment adds grit and atmosphere, emphasising concentration, movement, shadow and stage presence rather than colour spectacle, making the picture especially useful for music journalism, gig reviews, tour coverage, band publicity, cultural features and editorial use connected to Manchester's live music scene. House of All has drawn attention for bringing together musicians associated with The Fall while forging its own identity, and that connection makes the photograph relevant to wider searches around Mark E Smith legacy, post-punk history, cult British bands, underground music culture and veteran performers continuing to create and tour. The tight club setting and visible backline also help place the event within the intimate, working reality of UK independent venues rather than arena scale performance. Useful themes include northern music culture, small venue energy, live guitar, drums, stage lighting, black and white music photography, alternative gig scene and the continued pull of Manchester as a city of serious music heritage. Because sources conflict on the exact room within YES, the safest metadata approach is to caption the performance at YES Manchester rather than pinning it specifically to the Basement unless independently confirmed. That keeps the listing accurate while still preserving the key commercial and editorial value of the image as a live House of All performance in Manchester during late 2025

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EENJGW - Live concert photograph from the Jerry Harrison and Adrian Belew Remain in Light tour at O2 Ritz Manchester on 5 June 2025, showing the musician on stage playing a green electric guitar and singing into a microphone under red and purple stage lighting. The image is presented as an editorial music performance photograph and is useful for coverage of Talking Heads, Remain in Light, post-punk, new wave, art rock, funk rock, live music and Manchester gig culture. Jerry Harrison is strongly associated with Talking Heads as a keyboard and guitar player, while Adrian Belew is widely known for his work with King Crimson, David Bowie, Frank Zappa and Talking Heads related projects. The 2025 tour celebrated music from Talking Heads and the landmark Remain in Light period, with the Manchester date listed at O2 Ritz on Whitworth Street West. The venue is one of Manchester's long-established live music rooms, historically known as The Ritz, with a central city location close to Oxford Road and Deansgate-Castlefield. The scene shows a dark concert stage, amplifiers, percussion and microphone stands, with vivid coloured lighting and a focused performance stance typical of an intimate theatre or club gig. This image could suit editorial features on veteran musicians, classic alternative music, Talking Heads legacy, Remain in Light anniversary interest, live touring, Manchester concerts, guitar performance, art-rock audiences, music venues, nightlife, cultural events and the continuing appeal of late twentieth-century new wave and post-punk artists. It also has relevance for stories about heritage touring, older musicians still performing, influential rhythm-driven guitar music, experimental pop and the revival of classic albums in contemporary live sets. The low-light indoor conditions, saturated stage colour and close framing give the photograph strong atmosphere and documentary value for music press, listings, reviews and archive use.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDYG - The Greenwich Foot Tunnel crosses beneath the River Thames in East London, linking Greenwich (Royal Borough of Greenwich) on the south bank with Millwall (London Borough of Tower Hamlets) on the north. Approximately 4,000 people use the tunnel each day. It opened in 1902.
The tunnel was designed by civil engineer Sir Alexander Binnie for London County Council and constructed by contractor John Cochrane & Co. The project started in June 1899 and the tunnel opened on 4 August 1902. The tunnel replaced an expensive and sometimes unreliable ferry service allowing workers living south of the Thames to reach their workplaces in the London docks and shipyards in or near the Isle of Dogs. Its creation owed much to the efforts of working-class politician Will Crooks, who had worked in the docks and, after chairing the LCC's Bridges Committee responsible for the tunnel, later served as Labour MP for Woolwich.
The section of the tunnel that was repaired following damage during World War II
The entrance shafts at both ends are beneath glazed domes. Lifts, installed in 1904, were upgraded in 1992 and again in 2012, and helical staircases allow pedestrians to access the tile-lined tunnel, which slopes gently from both sides down to a midway lowpoint beneath the river. The cast-iron tunnel is 1,215 feet (370.2 m) long, 50 feet (15.2 m) deep and has an internal diameter of about 9 feet (2.74 m). The cast-iron rings are coated with concrete and surfaced with some 200,000 white glazed tiles. The northern end was damaged by bombs during the Second World War and repairs included a thick steel and concrete inner lining that substantially reduces the diameter for a short distance. The northern shaft staircase has 87 steps
the southern one has 100.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K0GF8W - Penny Lane is a road in the south Liverpool suburb of Mossley Hill. The name also applies to the area surrounding its junction with Smithdown Road and Allerton Road, and to the roundabout at Smithdown Place that was the location for a major bus terminus, originally an important tram junction of Liverpool Corporation Tramways. The roundabout was a frequent stopping place for John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison during their years as schoolchildren and students. Bus journeys via Penny Lane and the area itself subsequently became familiar elements in the early years of the Lennon“McCartney songwriting partnership. In 2009, McCartney reflected:
Penny Lane was kind of nostalgic, but it was really [about] a place that John and I knew ... I'd get a bus to his house and I'd have to change at Penny Lane, or the same with him to me, so we often hung out at that terminus, like a roundabout. It was a place that we both knew, and so we both knew the things that turned up in the story.
Lennon's original lyrics for In My Life had included a reference to Penny Lane. Soon after the Beatles recorded In My Life in October 1965, McCartney mentioned to an interviewer that he wanted to write a song about Penny Lane. A year later, he was spurred to write the song once presented with Lennon's Strawberry Fields Forever. McCartney also cited Dylan Thomas's nostalgic poem Fern Hill as an inspiration for Penny Lane. Lennon co-wrote the lyrics with McCartney. He recalled in a 1970 interview: The bank was there, and that was where the trams sheds were and people waiting and the inspector stood there, the fire engines were down there. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3T3CD - Viola Beach were an English indie rock group, formed in Warrington, Cheshire, in 2013. The band's final line-up consisted of Kris Leonard (guitar and vocals), River Reeves (guitar), Tomas Lowe (bass guitar), and Jack Dakin (drums). All four, along with their manager Craig Tarry, were killed when their car fell from a bridge in Södertälje, Sweden, on 13 February 2016. Founding members Frankie Coulson and Jonny Gibson are the last surviving members of the band as of 2023.
In the week following the crash, their single Boys That Sing entered the UK Singles Chart at number 80 and their previous single Swings & Waterslides entered at number 11, following a public campaign to boost sales. In the same week, Swings & Waterslides also entered at number three on the sales-only chart (which excludes streaming data) and Boys That Sing entered at number 27 on the same chart. On 29 July 2016, the self-titled album was posthumously released. It reached number one on the UK Albums Chart on 5 August 2016

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MCGB61 - Philip Parris Lynott (20 August 1949 “ 4 January 1986) was an Irish singer, bassist, and songwriter. His most commercially successful group was Thin Lizzy, of which he was a founding member, the principal songwriter, lead vocalist and bassist. He was known for his distinctive plectrum-based style on the bass, and for his imaginative lyrical contributions including working class tales and numerous characters drawn from personal influences and Celtic culture.
Lynott was born in the West Midlands of England, but grew up in Dublin with his grandparents. He remained close to his mother, Philomena, throughout his life. He fronted several bands as a lead vocalist, including Skid Row alongside Gary Moore, before learning the bass guitar and forming Thin Lizzy in 1969. After initial success with Whiskey in the Jar, the band had several hits in the mid-1970s such as The Boys Are Back in Town, Jailbreak and Waiting for an Alibi, and became a popular live attraction combining Lynott's vocal and songwriting skills with dual lead guitars. Towards the end of the 1970s, Lynott embarked upon a solo career, published two books of poetry, and after Thin Lizzy disbanded, he assembled and fronted the band Grand Slam.
In 2005, a life-size bronze statue of Lynott by Dublin sculptor Paul Daly was unveiled on Harry Street, off Grafton Street in Dublin. The ceremony was attended by Lynott's mother Philomena, and former band members Moore, Bell, Robertson, Downey, Gorham and Darren Wharton, who performed live
In the 1980s, Lynott increasingly suffered drug-related problems, particularly an addiction to heroin. In 1985, he had a final chart success with Moore, Out in the Fields, followed by the minor hit Nineteen, before his death in 1986. He remains a popular figure in the rock world

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3193117961 - 'A fantastic double mural, either side of an alley, off Argyle St, Glasgow, by artist Conzo Throb.
The Duke of Wellington, with his customary Queen St traffic cone, propositions a blue haired lady guitarist, with Tunnocks Teacakes strategically placed, over her charms. With IRN Brew in the background, this is Glasgow defined in a short alleyway. A fun and slightly edgy city, that absolutely everyone should experience, at least once.
Sloans bar, down the alley, is Glasgow's oldest bar and restaurant and dates back to 1797 when it was a coffee house in Morrison's Court. Twice a week a stagecoach would leave the court bound for Edinburgh. The courtyard was also the scene for many famous cockfighting contests – the sport of the day.

Manchester evg News Review - https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/whats-on/music-nightlife-news/gig-review-fall--manchester-7129956
I've seen Mark E Smith at a range of venues, from sweaty club gigs to confusing 100,000 Gorillaz fans at Glastonbury's main stage, but to see Manchester's most dissident music icon at the city's cathedral felt like it would be a surreal experience.
When the man himself strode past paying customers into the main nave of the grand old building, with the assurance of a man who very much owned the place, it was a double-take moment which seemed fitting of the whole event.
The Fall have been an unusually settled outfit in recent years, now on their fourth consecutive studio album with the same line-up.
For a band which has clocked up almost 70 members “ one of whom was reportedly fired by its iconic frontman and dictator-in-chief for ordering a salad “ it's been a period of relative calm which could have brought accusations of sterility.
The rousing opener ˜Your Future, Our Clutter' quickly dispels any fears of the serene venue taking away any of The Fall's traditional sting, if anything the acoustics of the cathedral add another layer to Smith's barking, hectoring vocals.
The follow-up number ˜I'm not from Bury' seems appropriate as the Prestwich rock deity holds his hometown crowd in the palm of his hand, especially the ones craning their necks around the cathedral's dramatic pillars as he prowls around the stage like an overlord searching for something that needs correcting.
In nearing 40 years as The Fall's supreme leader Smith has exhibited a fondness for ˜live-mixing' during sets “ a tweak of an amp here etc

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DJ7B6T - Misty Miller (born May 10, 1994) is a musician from Wimbledon, England. The young songstress has grown enormously since emerging as a sweet-singing ukulele player when her debut album was released in 2011. But having left college and discovered her own path, Misty has now returned with her own band (guitarist Jak Payne, drummer Dan Lyons and bassist Jack Everett) and two EPs released in 2013 - Next to You and Girlfriend. Her third EP, Sweet Nothing was released through Relentless/Sony in March 2015.
Influenced by the local South London music scene in Brixton, she has matured her sound into something she is far more comfortable in. A strong 60s influence is also evident in the raw vocals, edgy guitar licks and varied verse progressions. Citing the likes of Patti Smith, The Stooges and The Velvet Underground in her ˜eclectic' music taste, this girl goes a long way in capturing the essence of an era of music she adores so much. And, with her debut album set for a July 2015 release, she is just getting started.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DJ7B86 - Television is an American rock band, formed in New York City in 1973 and credited as highly influential and seminal.
Television was part of the 1970s New York rock scene, along with musical acts like the Patti Smith Group, The Ramones, Blondie, Richard Hell, and Talking Heads.
Although they recorded in a raw manner similar to their contemporaries, minimalizing the use of studio techniques, sound effects and atypical instruments, Television's music was unique and technically proficient, defined by guitarists Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd. The group's debut album, Marquee Moon, is often considered one of the defining releases of the punk era.
Jimmy Rip is an American guitarist, songwriter and record producer, who is known for his work with Jerry Lee Lewis, Mick Jagger, Debbie Harry, Michael Monroe, Henry Lee Summer and the former Television band leader Tom Verlaine.
Rip began playing guitar at the age of six.
In 1986, Rip worked as a session musician on Alphaville's album, Afternoons in Utopia.
He worked with Jagger on his solo album Wandering Spirit and released his first solo album in 1997, called Way Past Blue.
In 2006, Rip worked as a producer and guitarist with Jerry Lee Lewis for his album Last Man Standing. A year later, he joined Television after the departure of their second guitarist Richard Lloyd. Since then, he has been working on a new album with Television, and on a second solo effort. In 2009, after the South American and European tour he completed work on the debut album of the Croatian rock band, Voodoo Lizards.

Johnny Marr (born John Martin Maher, 31 October 1963) is an English musician, songwriter and singer. He first achieved fame as the guitarist and co-songwriter of the Smiths, who were active from 1982 to 1987. He has since performed with numerous other bands and embarked on a solo career.
Born in Manchester, to Irish parents, Marr formed his first band at the age of 13. He was part of several bands with Andy Rourke before forming the Smiths with Morrissey in 1982. The Smiths attained commercial success and were critically acclaimed, with Marr's jangle pop guitar style becoming a distinctive part of the band's sound, but separated in 1987 due to personal differences between Marr and Morrissey. Since then, Marr has been a member of the Pretenders, The The, Electronic, Modest Mouse, and the Cribs, and he has become a prolific session musician, working with names such as Pet Shop Boys, Talking Heads, Bryan Ferry and Hans Zimmer.
Having released an album titled Boomslang in 2003 under the name Johnny Marr and the Healers, Marr released his first solo album, The Messenger, in 2013. His second solo album, Playland, was released in 2014, followed by a third, Call the Comet, in 2018. Marr's autobiography, Set the Boy Free, was published in 2016

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DRH89F - Johnny Marr performs live at Manchester Academy in Manchester, England, on 12 October 2013, singing into a stage microphone while playing a white Fender Jaguar electric guitar. The influential guitarist, songwriter and former member of The Smiths wears a vivid blue velvet jacket decorated with badges as he leads his solo band beneath purple stage lighting. A drummer plays behind him, while guitar amplifiers, cables, microphones and other touring equipment fill the performance area.
The concert took place during the first year of Marr's established solo career following the release of his debut solo album, The Messenger, in February 2013. His live shows combined material from that record with selected songs associated with The Smiths and other parts of his extensive musical career. Marr's chiming, melodic guitar style was central to the sound of The Smiths, the highly influential Manchester group he formed with Morrissey in 1982, and it helped shape generations of indie and alternative rock musicians.
The white offset-body instrument visible in the photograph is a Fender Jaguar, a model strongly associated with Marr and adapted to suit his distinctive playing style. He is shown both singing and playing, capturing the transition from celebrated sideman and collaborator to frontman of his own band. The low audience viewpoint, bright spotlighting and strong blue, white and purple colours give the image the immediacy of a live rock performance.
Manchester Academy is a major concert venue on the University of Manchester campus on Oxford Road. The photograph documents Manchester's enduring music culture and a hometown appearance by one of the city's best-known guitarists. It is suitable for editorial coverage of Johnny Marr, The Smiths, British indie music, Fender guitars, concert photography, touring musicians, Manchester music heritage, live entertainment and popular culture.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDJNGD - Bernard John Bernie Marsden (born 7 May 1951) is an English rock guitarist. Having played with Glenn Cornick's Wild Turkey in 1974, he then played with Babe Ruth, from 1975“76, before becoming an original member of Paice Ashton Lord in 1977 and then joining the hard rock band, Whitesnake, after having the possibility of playing with his boy-time hero Paul McCartney and Wings because while waiting, David Coverdale asked him to form Whitesnake.
In more recent years, Marsden has toured with his bands Company of Snakes, M3 (both formed with fellow former Whitesnake members Micky Moody and Neil Murray), and performed with Elkie Brooks. Over the years he has taken part in a number of sessions and has released a handful of solo albums (And About Time, Too!, Look at Me Now, Green & Blues, Stacks). He has also collaborated with Micky Moody on a number of Marsden-Moody live and studio projects.
On the Sweden Rock Festival on 10 June 2011 Bernie Marsden played with Whitesnake for the first time since 1981, thus becoming the second of only two former Whitesnake band members who have played with Whitesnake in recent years, the other person being Adrian Vandenberg, who also played with them on the Sweden Rock Festival. In the last ten years, Marsden has been involved in very different projects. The most unusual being two engagements at the National Theatre in London for Nickolas Hytner's productions of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale and Henry the V in collaboration with Simon Webb. Also, he appeared in ZDF television in Germany for their production of Frankie, a six-part TV special.
After this, Marsden has worked alongside Robert Plant, Paul Weller, Ian Paice and Jon Lord for a charity concert in London. Bernie also played Guitar with Ringo Starr and his son Zak Starkey in Monte Carlo. Most recently, he has been playing and writing for guitar virtuoso Joe Bonamassa.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 7478907948 - 'A shot from an excellent night at Warringtons Parr Hall (I am glad to say my local venue is upping its game) with Robert Cray and his band. I must say I had pretty much the worst seat in the place and only by blagging an empty seat in the row behind, managed to get a decent view.
The brilliant set played on the night which is apparently not aranged in advance with the band included: I shiver, Worry, The Things You Do To Me, Bad Influence, Dont You Even Care, It Doesn't Show, On The Road Down, I'll always Remember You, Phone Booth, Poor Johnny, I Can't Fail, Smoking Gun, Chicken In The Kitchen and Still A Man.
The Robert Cray UK June Tour takes in The London BluesFest 2012 at the O2 Shepherds Bush Empire, The Glasgow O2 ABC, Birmingham Town Hall, The Holmfirth Picturedrome, Reading Sub89 and The Brighton Concorde2 (July 2012).
Robert Cray (born August 1, 1953, Columbus, Georgia, United States) is an American blues guitarist and singer. A five-time Grammy Award winner, he has led his own band, as well as an acclaimed solo career.
Cray was signed to Mercury Records in 1982. His third album release, Strong Persuader, produced by Dennis Walker, received a Grammy Award, while the crossover single 'Smokin' Gun' gave him wider appeal and name recognition.
By now, Cray was an opening act for such major stars as Eric Clapton (who remains a friend to this day), and sold out larger venues as a solo artist. Cray has generally played Fender guitars (Telecasters and Stratocasters) and there are two signature Robert Cray Stratocasters models available from Fender. The Robert Cray Custom Shop Stratocaster is made in the United States in the Fender custom shop and is identical to the guitars that Cray currently plays, while the Robert Cray Standard Stratocaster is a less-expensive model made in Fender's Ensenada, Mexico plant.
Cray had the opportunity to play alongside John Lee Hooker on his album Boom Boom, playing the guitar solo in the song 'Same Old Blues Again'. He is also featured on the Hooker album, The Healer
he plays a guitar solo on the song 'Baby Lee'. The entire Robert Cray Band backs Hooker on the title track of Hooker's 1992 album 'Mr. Lucky', where Cray plays lead guitar, sings, and banters with Hooker throughout the song.
Cray was invited to play at the 'Guitar Legends' concerts in Seville, Spain at the 1992 Expo, where he played a signature track, 'Phone Booth'. Albert Collins was also on the bill on this blues night of the 'Legends' gigs.
Cray continues to record and tour. He appeared at the Crossroads Guitar Festival, and supported Eric Clapton on his 2006-2007 world tour. In Fargo, North Dakota, he joined Clapton on backup guitar for the Cream song 'Crossroads'. In 2011, Cray was inducted to the Blues Hall of Fame

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 6257792313 - 'On Saturday I had the pleasure of seeing one of my favourite newer bands.
I first picked up on the track 'Austere' from a music blog I follow called burningworld.blogspot.com/
I espechially like the PodFodder compilations there, that are now up to no 132. There is always some gold nuggets lurking in them and this band are one of them.
The Joy Formidable released 'Austere' as a single in July 2008, followed by 'Cradle' on double 7' later that summer, and quickly produced an eight-track EP, A Balloon Called Moaning, which they released themselves in the UK in early 2009. Also in 2009 Justin Stahley was replaced by Matt Thomas on drums. Having relocated to London, the trio quickly earned a reputation for blistering live performances.
'We love and encourage the beautiful double-pedal,' says Bryan, with a chuckle. 'We do lean towards a slightly metal aesthetic when it comes to drums, which makes it very loud and heavy and all the things we want to be as a live entity. The new album definitely explores those elements, and that's because of Matt being in the band.'
The trio spent 2009 touring the UK, Europe and Australia with bands including Editors, Temper Trap and Passion Pit, mastering tiny clubs and festival stages alike. Their introduction to American audiences came when Passion Pit invited The Joy Formidable to open a pair of sold-out shows at New York's Terminal 5.
In summer 2010, the band signed with Canvasback Records, and released their cracking debut album 'The Big Roar', on 24 January 2011. The band worked on writing and tracking the material for the album when they weren't on the road.
In 2011, the band opened up the main stage at the Reading and Leeds festivals on the Saturday and Sunday respectively. In August 2011, they also opened up for Foo Fighters at a secret show at The Metro the night before they played an opening slot at Lollapalooza.
At the Academy gig, which was absolutely buzzing, they announced that the next album was in the offing, and despite some shouts of abuse, Rhydian would not remove his hat!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5743031658 - 'Auden plays in a band down in Portobello, east of Edinburgh which is a bit of a trendy up-coming neighbourhood (at least thats what the ESPC estate agents are saying). His band composes and plays material similar to Pendulum.
His musical style for the foot of the Royal Mile is more blues, Led Zeppelin, Eagles and classic rock however. He looks the part with his battered old bass.
The Tass lies on the High Street section of Edinburgh's Royal Mile, opposite the equally well known World's End. If you look at the cobbles in the High Street here you can see the outline in brass of the Netherbow Port, once the eastern gateway of the City of Edinburgh.
The Tass is named after one of Robert Burns' songs, The Silver Tassie (or 'goblet') and the Tass seeks to remember Scotland's greatest bard with a range of memorabilia relating to him. Don't worry though, this isn't overdone and it would be quite possible to enjoy the ambiance without being overwhelmed by the theme.
Much more obvious is the Tass's role as a focus for traditional and folk music, with live performances taking place most evenings. A choice of real ales and malt whiskies is on offer, and when I popped in the food looks fairly good too.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J7J - This image shows a well-worn blue flight case stencilled with the words Lynott Thin Lizzy “ Fragile , referencing the touring equipment used by Thin Lizzy and frontman Phil Lynott. Such cases were essential for transporting guitars, amplifiers, and other delicate instruments between venues during extensive national and international tours.
The scuffed surface, chipped paint, and taped label remnants speak to years of use on the road, offering a tangible glimpse into the physical reality of touring life for rock bands during the 1970s and 1980s. Flight cases like this were handled by road crew members responsible for safely moving valuable equipment between trucks, stages, and backstage areas.
Thin Lizzy were one of Ireland's most influential rock bands, known for blending hard rock with folk influences and for iconic tracks such as The Boys Are Back in Town and Jailbreak. Objects associated with their touring years now carry strong cultural and historical significance, bridging the gap between music performance and the unseen labour behind live shows.
Photographed under low light, the image emphasises texture, wear, and typography, making it well suited to editorial use covering music history, classic rock heritage, touring culture, backstage life, and archival memorabilia connected to influential bands and musicians.

A Question Of Etiquette hope to keep raising the bar and destroy the UK... Their lyrical concept is born through the hatred that many of us have grown up with through our lives, the people we know, hate and love and the pure passion that drives us to aim as far we can... The band aim for a fresh melodic sound, yet maintaining an extreme yet old school feel to the music, forever hoping to progress through time, and with the dedication and drive we all have we believe this is possible'

These metal lads from Manchester fuse the technical parts of various metal styles be it black, death or even prog together into an excellent blend that is both intelligent as well as lethally heavy. Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5151969435 - 'Solitary are a Lancashire based rock/metal band. They are Richard Sherrington (original member) on vox &
guitars, Roy Miller on drums, Andy Mellor on lead guitar and Mike Park on Bass. They are caught here at the Winnington Halloween gig in some more than usual fancy dress.
Solitary formed in Preston 1994 and signed to UK label Holier Than Thou Records in 1997, they made their first appearance on the HTT compilation “Genetically Fresh” which attracted interest from the JMG Agency who lined up support slots with Kill 2 This, Reign and Deranged from Sweden. May the following year Solitary record “Nothing Changes” Solitary then embarked on two UK tours to promote the album, which was released in November 1998.
In 2008 a new album “Requiem”, over a four-year period fraught with personal highs and lows the band created a 'Thrash Metal Monster', which was hailed as a must for the fans of Testament, God Forbid, Slayer or The Haunted. Influenced by the aforementioned bands and the 80’s Bay Area bands.
“Requiem” contains a guest vocal appearance from Chris Astley of 80’s Thrashers Xentrix on the track “Hatred” the CD also has cover of Testament’s “Into the Pit”. When writing the album Solitary used inspirational albums such as “Slaughter of the Soul”, “ The Gathering”, “ A New Darkness Upon Us” and “Gone Forever” as reference points to help them create the same feeling as those albums generated when they first heard them whether or not they’ve done that remains to be seen.
The artwork created by bassist Michael Park uses the original cover of a book published in 1736. The band are also shooting a video for “Keep Your Enemies Closer” in early September as well as having tracks on the CD cover mounts on Metal Hammer and Terrorizer in the UK.
If you have chance, catch a gig. See whats coming up at www.solitary.org.uk

They are Job Penny on Guitar &
vocals, Ex Redneck Zombie Adam Bevan working the Bass with vocals and Nick Cowling on percussion.
Read more about them and where you might catch them touring all over europe this autumn on their MySpace page.
They brought some colour to Winnington Park with support from exellent Birmingham rock band Adrenaline and Glasgows 'Hey Enemy'.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4734798535 - ''This Is Turin' has been described as a 'UK extreme metal band' from Cheshire. They announced they were signing to Rising Records late last year with an album in the pipeline.
Stalwarts may remember Daz from his early seminal hard/grind-core band Fall-out. Daz and the new line up have gone from strength to strength and while his hair has become less, the quality material (and the tat2's) have become more.
The band were on top form tonight. The set included 23:1, (the) Nameless, Carpe Diem, The Flood, Mothers Milk (a love song? LOL?), To Your Knees, Lilly and Eradicated. Castro finished off the set and it was good to see that the 'Winnington wall of death' is not dead.
The line up was Daz on Vox, Hayden &
Davey on Guitars, Danni on Bass and Ed on percussion.
Keep it up Daz, Cheshire music needs you lads :-)
There are song samples and all kinds on their MySpace page at www.myspace.com/thisisturinuk including some demo trax to check out. Upcoming gigs take them to Birmingham, Colwyn Bay, wakefield, Manchester and Bridgend. So no excuse not to catch them if death metal (with 'with 50% added extra Tech with libberal smatterings of ambient and a sprinkling of pure unconcentrated blackened epic death... Hmm, there might be some grind and classical in there!'

Here on a bill with Crewes AQUO and Blue Gillespie (of south Wales). A lot of the new stuff was played and it will be a long five weeks until the release of 'Dreams Of Death &
The Death Of Dreams' which must be well worth getting hold of. You used to be able to buy their first EP, 'A Demon For Every Occasion' at gigs, I remember scrounging a copy several years back. The new album was cut in 2009 at Parlour Studios Northampton with acclaimed metal producer Russ Russell (Napalm Death/Evile blah da blah...) at the mixing desk.
In describing the cut they namecheck Hole, Atari Teenage Riotand my old punk faves Killing Joke. These are cute cookies. Follow this link and maybe buy a tee or some other cool merch www.obsessivecompulsiveband.com/shop/
The band are currently on tour taking in Bristol, Newport, Manchester, Bradford, Worcester and Birmingham. Go out of your way to see them, you wont be dissapointed!
There was a crowd of about 130 there and it was a cracking night.

Still where would we be without John Densmore of the Doors, the mighty Bonzo John Bonham of Led Zeppilin, Topper Headon of the Clash, Stephen Morris of Joy Division (once told to totaly dismantel his kit by a drug crazed Martin Hannett whil erecording Unknown Pleasures), The Stones Charlie Watts, Roger Taylor of Queen, Keith Moon and Neil Peart of Rush (not often you will catch me heaping praise on Rush, but where its due....). Most often you might hear it in (what my old dad might have called) a WM (Working Mens) Social Club. It might be after some bingo (a la Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights).
At this social club bar on the edge of St Helens the Wigan Wildkats were too loud and the MC (Compaire) had them turn the amplifiers down a couple of times.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDJNFR - Bernard John Bernie Marsden (born 7 May 1951) is an English rock guitarist.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RG9840 - Fender Musical Instruments Corporation (FMIC, or simply Fender) is an American manufacturer of stringed instruments and amplifiers. Fender produces acoustic guitars, electric basses, bass amplifiers and public address equipment, but is best known for its solid-body electric guitars and bass guitars, particularly the Stratocaster, Telecaster, Precision Bass, and the Jazz Bass. The company was founded in Fullerton, California, by Clarence Leonidas Leo Fender in 1946. Its headquarters are in Scottsdale, Arizona.
FMIC is a privately held corporation, with Andy Mooney serving as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The company filed for an initial public offering in March 2012,[4] but this was withdrawn five months later. In addition to its Scottsdale headquarters, Fender has manufacturing facilities in Corona, California (US) and Ensenada, Baja California (Mexico).
As of July 10, 2012, the majority shareholders of Fender were the private equity firm of Weston Presidio (43%), Japanese music distributors Yamano Music (14%) and Kanda Shokai (13%) and Servco Pacific (5%). In December 2012, TPG Growth (the middle market and growth equity investment platform of TPG Capital) and Servco Pacific took control of the company after acquiring the shares held by Weston Presidio.
In 1950, Fender introduced the first mass-produced solid-body Spanish-style electric guitar, the Telecaster (originally named the Broadcaster for two-pickup models and Esquire for single-pickup). Following its success, Fender created the first mass-produced electric bass, the Precision Bass (P-Bass). In 1954, Fender unveiled the Stratocaster (Strat) guitar. With the Telecaster and Precision Bass having been on the market for some time, Leo Fender was able to incorporate input from working musicians into the Stratocaster's design.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DJ7B8B - Television is an American rock band, formed in New York City in 1973 and credited as highly influential and seminal.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HE7M53 - Nestled along a narrow cobbled alleyway in the historic Half Bap area, the Duke offers a traditional Belfast welcome of craic, music and humour in contrast to the modern fashionable establishments currently blowing into the surrounding streets. Hosting regular traditional sessions there is no better place to sample the real taste of our city “ simply step in and drink an Irish whiskey washed down with a pint of creamy stout.
Imagine Belfast with only five streets. Protected by earth ramparts and the city walls, the area where the Dark Horse now stands was convenient to the old iron foundry, the pottery, the whiskey merchants and the brown linen hall. Appreciate the superb décor and special atmosphere with beautiful antique mirrors, Belfast furniture and artefacts from some of the city's most famous hotels and buildings from bygone times “ providing a rather rare and unique glimpse of Belfast's historical past. Just call in and you will enjoy a huge warm welcome from a truly Belfast institution with a huge heart.
