It was opened in 1847 by the Bolton, Blackburn, Clitheroe & West Yorkshire Railway, which was subsequently taken over by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway twelve years later. It is now served by Northern Trains services on the Ribble Valley Line from Rochdale/Manchester Victoria to Blackburn and into Clitheroe.
Darwen is set amongst the hills of East Lancashire. Arriving from or departing towards Bolton involves journeying through the long Sough Tunnel, some 2,015 yd (1,843 m) in length.
The station has two platforms. It is one of only two passing points on the otherwise single track Blackburn to Bolton part of the route, but trains normally cross here only in the morning and evening peak periods. The loop was extended in length by a mile (1.6 km) either side of the station during a six-week-long engineering blockade in July & August 2015 to increase capacity on the line and eventually allow a half-hourly service to operate (as specified in the new Northern franchise agreement, due to come into effect in April 2016).
The station is currently unstaffed, with waiting shelters on each platform
step-free access is available to both. Ticket machines are available, along with a long-line P.A system and passenger information screens to convey train running information.

Walking around Weaver Square in Northwich, past its many vacant units, you'd struggle to imagine it was once a hive of retail activity. Years ago, hundreds of shoppers would visit daily, drawn by big names like Woolworths and Argos.
Fast-forward to the present day and it is scarcely recognisable. Half of the complex has been demolished, most of the units lie empty and the crowds have long disappeared elsewhere, as online shopping continues to eat away at the high street's fortunes.
Northwich's Cllr Sam Naylor said: It's been tragic. We've seen it decline from what was a thriving, 70s-style shopping precinct into a scene, not of dereliction, but something that smacks of a past era of post-war modern Britain.
Following the recent and sad closure of the much-loved Seafarer, many residents questioned what was happening with the long-planned redevelopment of Weaver Square, which lies mere feet away from the chippy.
Cheshire West and Chester Council acquired the lease of the site back in 2014, by which time many of the units already stood empty. The authority took it over after the previous owner of Weaver Square ceased trading in 2012.
Since then, there have been a number of ideas about what do with the site. But the shopping centre continued to lie mostly-dormant, despite it being partly-demolished in 2019 amid promises of regeneration.
Northwich would then be hit by misfortune after misfortune : the outdoor market was gutted by fire in early 2020
the Covid pandemic caused economic chaos across the world
the devastating flooding in 2021 left many businesses badly damaged
and the town's railway station collapsed in April last year.

Chris Harman (8 November 1942 ? 7 November 2009) was a British journalist and political activist, and a member of the Central Committee of the Socialist Workers Party. He was an editor of International Socialism and Socialist Worker.
Born Christopher John Harman into a working-class family, he attended Leeds University (where he joined the Socialist Review Group in 1961) and the London School of Economics (LSE) where he began (but did not complete) a doctorate under the supervision of Ralph Miliband. He was instrumental in publishing the magazine of the LSE Socialist Society, The Agitator, and was a leading member of the International Socialists (as the SRG had become) by 1968. He was involved in the Vietnam Solidarity Campaign
In 2005 Chris Harman was writing about how the 30-year project to publish the collected works of Marx and Engels was done. It is 50 volumes long and he was reviewing Vol 50, having read the previous 49 one by one as they had appeared. Of course, he had read them all. Harman, who has died aged 66 in Cairo, Egypt, following a cardiac arrest, was the kind of Marxist who is never satisfied with second-hand summaries. To get a handle on why he was like this, we have to go back to the 1950s when Marxism was largely in the hands of communists and, as Orwell's Animal Farm shows, the link between Marx's ideas and the communist tyrannies was nothing more than a distorted rhetoric

The first presence of Chinese people in Liverpool dates back to 1834 when the first vessel direct from China arrived in Liverpool's docks to trade such goods as silk and cotton wool. Many Chinese immigrants first arrived in Liverpool in the late 1860s as a result of Alfred Holt and Company employing large numbers of Chinese seamen while establishing the Blue Funnel Shipping Line. The commercial shipping line created strong trade links between the cities of Shanghai, Hong Kong and Liverpool
mainly importing silk, cotton and tea. From the 1890s onwards, small numbers of Chinese began to set up businesses catering to the Chinese sailors working on Holt's lines and others. Some of these men married working class British women, resulting in a number of British-born Eurasian Chinese being born in Liverpool.
The Chinese Arch was assembled in 2000 (after being built in one of Liverpool's twin cities ? Shanghai) as a mark of redevelopment of the area, which is still continuing today.
Plans to redevelop a significant portion of Chinatown were revealed in October 2010 and April 2012 respectively. One scheme named 'China Square' is to include a Chinese Cultural Museum and Courtyard by Marriott in the former Scandinavian Hotel building. Another regeneration project tipped to take place is 'Shanghai Square', which when built will occupy the southern fringes of Chinatown. The first presence of Chinese people in Liverpool dates back to 1834 when the first vessel direct from China arrived in Liverpool's docks to trade such goods as silk and cotton wool. Many Chinese immigrants first arrived in Liverpool in the late 1860s as a result of Alfred Holt and Company employing large numbers of Chinese seamen while establishing the Blue Funnel Shipping Line. The commercial shipping line created strong trade links between the cities of Shanghai, Hong Kong and Liverpool
mainly importing silk, cotton and tea. From the 1890s onwards, small numbers of Chinese began to set up businesses catering to the Chinese sailors working on Holt's lines and others. Some of these men married working class British women, resulting in a number of British-born Eurasian Chinese being born in Liverpool.
The Chinese Arch was assembled in 2000 (after being built in one of Liverpool's twin cities ? Shanghai) as a mark of redevelopment of the area, which is still continuing today.
Plans to redevelop a significant portion of Chinatown were revealed in October 2010 and April 2012 respectively. One scheme named 'China Square' is to include a Chinese Cultural Museum and Courtyard by Marriott in the former Scandinavian Hotel building. Another regeneration project tipped to take place is 'Shanghai Square', which when built will occupy the southern fringes of Chinatown. The proposal includes building a 23,000 m2 (250,000 sq ft) trade centre that will provide space for up to 100 businesses, specialist accommodation for Chinese students

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1RDF4 - Built in 1852 by William Kelsall a saddler of Old Glossop the first mention of a beerhouse is an advert in a Glossop Record local paper in June 1863 which stated that Decima Hall was selling up at the Spinners Arms, Milltown and leaving the country.
John Booth took up the offer and moved down from the Drover's Arms in 1864. In the 1871 Census he was also described as a grocer with the pub now called the Prince of Wales, having possibly changed in 1864 when John Booth moved in following the marriage of the Prince of Wales. In a Morris Commercial Directory for 1878 John was also a wholesale agent for George Robert Clayton a brewer of Salford. In 1880 he unsuccessfully applied for an alehouse licence but remained licensee until 1892. He had bought the pub from William Kelsall in 1877 and sold it to Openshaw Brewery in 1903 who took out a new 999year lease in 1921.
It remained a beerhouse until 1960 when a Full Licence was obtained, as with other Openshaw pubs it eventually became a Bass house. It was sold by Bass in 1982 to the Prince of Wales Partnership one of whose members Arthur Banks took out the licence followed a month later by David Hughes. It was bought by Marston Thompson & Evershed in 1984 who in 1986 gave it a complete refurbishment with the provision of dining room and function room upstairs for 40 people.

It is the terminus of the short branch from Dinting. Although much of the station building has been given over to retail use (co-op), the station remains staffed and is operated by Northern Rail.
Henry Howard, 13th Duke of Norfolk built the spur line from Dinting viaduct to Howard Town at his own expense over his own land. He then sold it to the Sheffield, Ashton-Under-Lyne and Manchester Railway. The station was opened in July 1845. There was a previous station called Glossop on the main line but that was renamed Dinting when the current station opened. Glossop station is sometimes, though rarely, known as Glossop Central (Dinting station being Glossop Junction). The station was renamed from Glossop Central to Glossop on 6 May 1974.
Originally built with multiple platforms, the station was reduced to one platform in the 1980s. Double-ended electric multiple units arriving from Manchester Piccadilly reverse to proceed to Hadfield, and vice-versa. The other platforms and redundant station buildings were incorporated into an extension for the next door Co-op supermarket and car park.
The station is now a Grade II Listed building and a blue plaque was unveiled in 2006

Some members of the class remained in use for charter work and for freight work with Freightliner until 2021. A number of the class were exported to Bulgaria and Hungary and remain in use. Developed as a 'standard' electric locomotive from earlier prototype models, one hundred of these locomotives were built from 1965 to 1966 to haul trains on the then newly electrified West Coast Main Line (WCML) from London Euston to Birmingham, Crewe, Liverpool, Manchester and later Glasgow and Preston. Introduction of the class enabled the replacement of many steam locomotives, which were finally withdrawn by British Rail in 1968.
Under the earlier BR classification system, the type was given the designation AL6 (meaning the sixth design of AC locomotive) and locomotives were numbered E3101?E3200. In 1968, this was changed to Class 86 when British Rail introduced the TOPS classification system.
The class was built to haul passenger and freight trains alike on the West Coast Main Line
however, some members of the class also saw use on the Great Eastern Main Line (GEML) between London Liverpool Street and Norwich, after the remainder of the line north of Colchester was electrified in the mid-1980s. Most regular passenger duties of the class came to end on both the WCML and the GEML in the early-to-mid-2000s, after a career of up to 40 years. Some members of the class remained in use for charter work and for freight work with Freightliner until 2021. A number of the class were exported to Bulgaria and Hungary and remain in use. As of 2022, three Class 86s remain preserved in usable condition in the UK

The large-scale choral repertoire is now performed by the Festival Chorus, but the festival also features other major ensembles and international soloists. The 2011 festival took place in Worcester from 6 to 13 August. The 2012 festival in Hereford took place earlier than usual, from 21 to 28 July, to avoid clashing with the 2012 Summer Olympics. The event is now established in the last week of July. The 300th anniversary of the original Three Choirs Festival was celebrated during the 2015 festival, which took place from 25 July to 1 August in Hereford (the landmark 300th meeting of the Three Choirs does not fall until after 2027 due to there being no Three Choirs Festivals for the duration of both World War I and World War II and COVID-19. The 2023 Festival will take place in Gloucester from 22 to 29 July.
The festival is closely identified with the musical careers of British composers Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughan Williams. The organists of the three cathedrals (who act as artistic director and festival conductor when it is their cathedral's turn to host the festival) are Geraint Bowen (Hereford), Adrian Partington (Gloucester) and Samuel Hudson (Worcester).

Dunham Massey Hall and garden are immediately west of the village of Dunham Town, with the deer park, the only medieval park in Trafford to survive to the present day, lying to the south of the hall.
The present hall was initially built in 1616, but was later remodelled for George, Earl of Stamford and Warrington between 1732 and 1740
it was also altered towards the end of the eighteenth century and in the early twentieth century. During the First World War, the hall was used as a military hospital.
The hall and grounds were donated to the National Trust by the last Earl of Stamford, in 1976 They are open to the public and are amongst Britain's leading visitor attractions. The hall itself, the stables, and the carriage house of Dunham Massey are all Grade I listed buildings.

Opened on 14 December 1896, it is the third-oldest underground metro system in the world after the London Underground and the Budapest Metro. It is the only heavy rail underground metro system in the United Kingdom outside London, and also the only one in the United Kingdom which operates completely underground. Another major section of underground suburban railway line in Glasgow is the Argyle Line, which was formerly part of the Glasgow Central Railway.

The eagle insignia on the plaque was adopted by the regiment, after Ensign Ewart captured it from the French at the battle of Waterloo in 1815. Archaeologists have established human occupation of the rock since at least the Iron Age (2nd century AD), although the nature of the early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle on the rock since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crowns in 1603. From the 15th century the castle's residential role declined, and by the 17th century it was principally used as military barracks with a large garrison. Its importance as a part of Scotland's national heritage was recognised increasingly from the early 19th century onwards, and various restoration programmes have been carried out over the past century and a half. As one of the most important strongholds in the Kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle was involved in many historical conflicts from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century to the Jacobite Rising of 1745. Research undertaken in 2014 identified 26 sieges in its 1100 year-old history, giving it a claim to having been the most besieged place in Great Britain and one of the most attacked in the world.[2]
Few of the present buildings pre-date the Lang Siege of the 16th century, when the medieval defences were largely destroyed by artillery bombardment. The most notable exceptions are St Margaret's Chapel from the early 12th century, which is regarded as the oldest building in Edinburgh,[3] the Royal Palace and the early-16th-century Great Hall, although the interiors have been much altered from the mid-Victorian period onwards. The castle also houses the Scottish regalia, known as the Honours of Scotland and is the site of the Scottish National War Memorial and the National War Museum of Scotland. The British Army is still responsible for some parts of the castle, although its presence is now largely ceremonial.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG3857 - The current North Bridge is 525 feet (160 m) long and has three spans of arched girders each 175 feet (53 m) feet in length. It is 75 feet (23 m) wide. It was constructed from 1894?1897 by Sir William Arrol & Co., which company is also noted for construction of the Forth Bridge. The design of the ornamentation was by the City architect of the time, Robert Morham.
The foundation stone was laid on 25 May 1896 by the then Lord Provost (the Rt. Hon Andrew McDonald, with Masonic ceremonial. A medal[3] was struck commemorating the opening of the bridge on 15 September 1897.[4] The medal shows a view of the bridge with trains underneath and on the obverse a bust of the by then knighted Sir Andrew McDonald, Lord Provost.[5]

Situated on the bridge is a war memorial, by sculptor William Birnie Rhind which memorialises soldiers of the King's Own Scottish Borderers killed in campaigns between 1878 and 1902.
At the southern end of the bridge (where it meets the Royal Mile and South Bridge, in the Edinburgh's Old Town) are substantial buildings whose main entrances are at carriageway level but which also have entrances in the valley below. Those on the west side are The Scotsman Hotel, former headquarters of The Scotsman newspaper, alongside a block of commercial premises and flats (Royal Mile Mansions). That on the east housed Patrick Thomson's department store from 1906 until 1976 when its then owner the House of Fraser rebranded it as Arnotts department store. Consisting of an 11-storey office tower, and an In-Shops indoor market on the ground and first floors. Full of tacky clothes shops, greasy spoon cafes, amusement arcades and stalls where you can get a new drive belt for your vacuum cleaner. You get the picture.
Amazingly it is part of a grand scheme to gut the building completely, extend the office tower to a whopping 32-storeys, add a smaller 16-storey one for good measure and repackage it as a state of the art multi-use complex. This was all reported in the Evening Times in 2009, but sadly you can still buy a processed burger in the Savoy Centre.

The landmark building is the head office of the Co-operative Group. Standing 72.5 metres (237.8 feet) tall, the building forms the centrepiece of the new ?800 million NOMA development in the northern quarter of Manchester city centre. The building cost at least ?105 million to construct and was sold on leaseback terms in 2013 for ?142 million.
One Angel Square is one of the most sustainable large buildings in Europe and is built to a BREEAM 'Outstanding' rating.[12] It is powered by a biodiesel cogeneration plant using rapeseed oil to provide electricity and heat.[10] The structure makes use of natural resources, maximising passive solar gain for heat and using natural ventilation through its double-skin facade, adiabatic cooling, rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling and waste heat recycling.
The building's distinctive form has been compared to a sliced egg and a ship. Its design was announced by architects 3DReid in May 2009 and construction began in July 2010 with a projected completion date in March 2013. The wheelie bin is a waste container on wheels designed to make it easier for users to transport heavy loads of refuse to the curb or other pick-up point. More recently it has application for transporting stolen goods on bin day in residential suburbs. George Dempster invented the Dempster-Dumpster system in the 1930s for automatically loading the contents of standardized mobile steel containers onto the dustcart.
This led to the classic Dempster Dumpmaster waste collection vehicle of the 1950s, but wheelie bins did not become commonplace until the 1970s. The term dumpster is frequently used as a generic term for a large MGB or the non-mobile variety (known as a skip in the UK or Australia) in the United States. In the US residential wheelie bins are also generically called Herbie Curbies.
The modern bin is a German invention of the 1970s in a patent held by Schneider, and licensed to other companies outside Germany. The smaller wheelie bins, for domestic or light commercial use, typically hold 120 to 360 litres (26 to 79 imp gal
32 to 95 US gal), with 240 litres (53 imp gal
63 US gal) being the most common. They have a hinged flap lid and two wheels on the bottom on the same side as the lid hinge. There is a bar behind the hinge on the top of the bin which is used to move it, or to hoist it up onto a garbage truck for emptying.
The 240 litre bin is usually considered to have the same capacity as three traditional waste containers. In the UK, wheelie bins for non-recyclable domestic waste are currently collected either weekly or once a fortnight, depending on the local Council's waste management policies.

'My Generation' is a song by the British rock group The Who, which became a hit and one of their most recognisable songs. The song was named the 11th greatest song by Rolling Stone on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and 13th on VH1's list of the 100 Greatest Songs of Rock &
Roll.
It's also part of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll and is inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for 'historical, artistic and significant' value. In 2009 it was named the 37th Greatest Hard Rock Song by VH1.
The song was released as a single on 5 November 1965, reaching No. 2 in the UK, the Who's highest charting single in the UK and No. 74 in America. 'My Generation' also appeared on The Who's 1965 debut album, My Generation (The Who Sings My Generation in the United States), and in greatly extended form on their live album Live at Leeds (1970). The Who re-recorded the song for the Ready Steady Who! EP in 1966, but this version was only released in 1995 on the remastered version of the A Quick One album.
The main difference between this version and the original is that instead of the hail of feedback which ends the original, the band play a chaotic rendition of Edward Elgar's 'Land of Hope and Glory'. In the album's liner notes the song is credited to both Townshend and Elgar. A music video featuring a montage of live performance clips has been played on music stations.
The Zimmers was a British band, thought to have the oldest members of any band in the world. The oldest member (Buster Martin) claimed to have been born in 1906, although some sources indicate he was born in 1913 \u2013 he died in 2011. The former lead singer Alf Carretta died on 29 June 2010, aged 93. The group takes its name from the Zimmer frame (walker).
The band was created as a feature in a BBC Television documentary, which was first broadcast on 28 May 2007. The feature of forming the band and recording a single was intended to give a voice to the feelings of isolation and imprisonment suffered by the elderly. The Zimmers' logo is a parody of The Beatles' logo, as is the image of them walking across Abbey Road.

While minding my own business munching through my lunchtime Peking duck wrap, I was reminded of the turning of the season. A half brown, half green leaf landed on the bench next to me and a cool breeze made me zip up my jacket. Autumn (or you may call it fall) has arrived.
This track Autumn Shade comes from the Australian alternative rock band The Vines 2002 album 'Highly Evolved'. It was produced by Rob Schnapf, Highly Evolved was an immensely popular debut, part of a trend towards garage rock revival bands known as much for the relentless hype from the UK music press as for their music
The Vines were frequently compared to Nirvana. The debut single, 'Highly Evolved', was chosen as Single of the Week by influential British music magazine New Musical Express. They also voted it the 2nd best album of the year in 2002.
Originally named Rishikesh and formed 1994 in Sydney, they play a musical hybrid of 1960s garage rock and 1990s alternative music.
Since 2006 their line-up has consisted of vocalist and lead guitarist Craig Nicholls, rhythm guitarist Ryan Griffiths, bass guitarist Brad Heald, and drummer Hamish Rosser.
Upon the release of their debut album, The Vines were hailed as \u201cthe second coming of Nirvana' by the British press
their grungy sound was considered reminiscent of the Seattle scene circa \u201991, and Nicholls' erratic on-stage behavior and raw vocals drew comparisons between him and Kurt Cobain. Highly Evolved became a huge success and their accompanying live shows in the early years were praised as 'electrifying' and 'sensational'.

It was built in the Gothic Revival architectural style fashionable during much of the nineteenth century, and is one of only three cathedrals in the United Kingdom with three spires.
The See (or Diocese) of Truro was established in 1876, and the first bishop, Edward White Benson, was consecrated in 1877. Truro was the first cathedral to be built on a new site in England since Salisbury Cathedral in 1220.

From 1880 until 1887 a temporary wooden cathedral was built on an adjacent site. This accommodated fewer than 400 people and was extremely hot in summer and cold in winter. It was in this building that the Bishop introduced the new evening service of Nine Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve, 1880.
Pearson's design combines the Early English style with certain French characteristics, chiefly spires and rose windows. Truro's resemblance to Lincoln Cathedral is not coincidental: Pearson had been appointed as Lincoln's Cathedral architect and the first Bishop of Truro, Edward Benson, had previously been Canon Chancellor at Lincoln. The central tower and spire stands 250 feet (76 m) tall, while the western towers reach to 200 feet (61 m). Four kinds of stone were used: Mabe granite for the exterior, and St Stephen's granite for the interior, with dressings and shafts of Bath and Polyphant stone. Missing from this extreme macro cable is an earth. This woul dbe in the colours of the london underground district and circle line yellow and green, to add to these colours here. The old DIy plugs were designed such that if cables were pulled out, the live brown wire would be removed first.

The stamp is inked up in red.
Victorians and the like used to love lots of rubber stamps just like this. You see it less so now most corrospondence is email or automated spam. Even cheques were not really cashed until several stout stamps had been embossed on them. These colonial practices still occur in India (for the moment), as anyone who has ever changed money in a bank will testify.

An artwork dedicated to one of Macclesfield's finest musicians has pride of place in the town centre. The mural of Ian Curtis, the iconic former frontman of Joy Division, is a fully funded Cheshire East Council project and has been painted by well-known street artist ?Akse'. It adorns a building on Mill Street, just across from the bus station.

Ian was brought up in Macclesfield, won a scholarship to King's School in the town and his ashes are buried in Macclesfield Cemetery. He took his own life in 1980.
The commissioning of the mural follows on from Cheshire East Council's approval of the Macclesfield town centre strategic regeneration framework, which the council is continuing to deliver against.
The framework sets out the council's vision for the town centre as a place which celebrates its quirkiness and provides the development sector with the confidence and certainty needed to bring forward investment, jobs and economic growth.
As part of the council funded project, you can watch Macclesfield residents share their thoughts on what the mural brings to their town.

Waverley borders the borough of Guildford to the north, the Mole Valley district to the east, the Horsham and Chichester districts of West Sussex to the south, and the East Hampshire and Hart districts and the borough of Rushmoor in Hampshire to the west and northwest.
