In newer fulfillment centers, items are stored on pods and brought to pickers by robots (Amazon Robotics). In the United Kingdom, initial staffing was provided by Randstad Holding and other temporary employment agencies. In the United States, many workers are hired as Amazon employees and granted shares of stock or sign-on bonuses, while others are offered temporary seasonal positions. When we have permanent positions available, we look to the top-performing temporary associates to fill them, said an Amazon spokesperson. Amazon acquired Kiva Systems, a warehouse automation company, in 2012.
Amazon fulfillment centers can also provide warehousing and order-fulfillment for third-party sellers, for an extra fee. Third-party sellers can use Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) to ship for other platforms as well, such as eBay or their own websites

It is a moderately-sized station on the West Coast Main Line. It is operated by Avanti West Coast, and is also served by Northern Trains.
Wigan's other station is Wigan Wallgate, which is about 110 yards (100 m) away, on the opposite side of the street named Wallgate, for services to Manchester (Victoria, Deansgate, Oxford Road & Piccadilly), Southport and Kirkby. Both stations are centrally located on the southern fringe of Wigan town centre. The station is named North Western, not because of its location but because it formerly belonged to the London and North Western Railway. The drop in usage figures for Wigan North Western in 2006/07 was due to the adjustment of the allocation between the town's two stations. In 2009 North Western station was identified as one of the ten worst category B interchange stations for mystery shopper assessment of fabric and environment and was set to receive a share of ?50m funding for improvements
The station is served currently by Avanti West Coast. There is an hourly service on the West Coast Main Line from London Euston, which continues northwards to Glasgow Central, with additional peak services terminating at Preston, Lancaster and Carlisle. The journey time from London is less than two hours (1 hour and 55 minutes). There is also an hourly service in the opposite direction calling at Warrington Bank Quay and London Euston. It is also served by Avanti West Coast's services from London Euston via Birmingham New Street to Blackpool North, Edinburgh and Glasgow Central (alternate hours). The single London Midland service from Birmingham New Street to Preston that used to call in the evening was withdrawn at the end of the 2007-8 timetable.

The earliest possible mention of a church at Wigan occurs in the Domesday Survey of 1086. In describing what is now South Lancashire, the King's Commissioners noted that in King Edward the Confessor's time (1042-1066) the Church of the Manor of Newton-in-Makerfield was endowed with one carucate of land.
Wigan Church is not specifically mentioned but there are very strong reasons for assuming that it can be identified as 'the church of the Manor of Newton'. If this is the case, then Wigan Parish Church was founded at least as early as the reign of Edward the Confessor and probably even earlier and so can claim to be one of Lancashire's oldest parish churches. It was beyond any doubt established by 1199, when King John appointed Adam de Freckleton perpetual vicar of the church of Wigan at the request of Ranulf, Treasurer of Salisbury, the first known Rector of Wigan.
Over the centuries, Wigan has found itself in four different dioceses. It was originally in the diocese of York. From the beginning of the 10th century it was in the diocese of Lichfield until 1541, when it was transferred to the new diocese of Chester. Since 1880 it has been in the diocese of Liverpool
The Church stands on the crest of a hill in the centre of Wigan. Most of the present structure was erected between 1845 and 1850, when the Church was almost entirely rebuilt. It was a copy of the Church which was taken down then, which seems to have dated in the main from the later Middle Ages, though parts of the tower and perhaps other fragments were earlier.
Since the rebuilding three restorations have been necessary in 1898 and 1947 and more recently 2006.
This restoration began in the early 1990's when the copper on the Nave roof needed to be replaced.

Outside of New York, buskers is not a term generally used in American English.
Performances are anything that people find entertaining, including acrobatics, animal tricks, balloon twisting, caricatures, clowning, comedy, contortions, escapology, dance, singing, fire skills, flea circus, fortune-telling, juggling, magic, mime, living statue, musical performance, puppeteering, snake charming, storytelling or reciting poetry or prose, street art such as sketching and painting, street theatre, sword swallowing, ventriloquism and washboarding.
The first recorded instances of laws affecting buskers were in ancient Rome in 462 BC. The Law of the Twelve Tables made it a crime to sing about or make parodies of the government or its officials in public places
the penalty was death. Louis the Pious excluded histriones and scurrae, which included all entertainers without noble protection, from the privilege of justice. In 1530 Henry VIII ordered the licensing of minstrels and players, fortune-tellers, pardoners and fencers, as well as beggars who could not work. If they did not obey they could be whipped on two consecutive days.
In the United States under constitutional law and most European common law, the protection of artistic free speech extends to busking. In the U.S. and many countries, the designated places for free speech behaviour are the public parks, streets, sidewalks, thoroughfares and town squares or plazas

The Centre in its current form dates back to the early 1980s. The Community Centre Association, led by the late Betty Cohen, was very worried about the condition of the railway warehouse. They felt that so important a building in the history of Broadbottom should not be allowed to just rot away. With the help of Greater Manchester Council and Tameside Council who provided the necessary mortgage, the building was bought and converted into the centre for disabled riders which it has remained ever since alongside Tameside School of Gymnastics.
The Etherow Centre Charitable Trust currently maintains this historic building enabling many able bodied and disabled users to participate in the various activities offered.

Glossop Borough Council had set up a War Memorial Commitee to decide on what memorials should be erected around the Borough. The design that was decided on was a stepped stone base with bronze plaques inscribed with the names of those who lost their lives. On top of the stone base is a winged figure of Victory holding a laurel wreath. She is standing with one foot on the globe and another on the neck of a snake, representing evil. The bronze statue has been attributed to Vernon March, who also made the National War Monument in Ottowa, Ontario, Canada.
Dedication, 26 March 1922
The War Memorials at Glossop and Hadfield are identical. They were both dedicated on the same day, Sunday 26th March 1922. On the day of the dedication miniature evergreens had been planted around the base.
A procession of the Mayor (S. Bamforth), Lord Howard, Lord Doverdale (Edward Partington), the War Memorial Committee and other officials made their way from the Town Hall to Norfolk Square at 2.30pm. Lord Howard had been asked to unveil the War Memorial. He gave a short speech stating:
that he felt much honoured in having been asked to unveil that monument, which all of them had subscribed to, to enable it to be raised in that square.
The Rev. W. M. Martin-Ellis, Vicar of Whitfield, then performed the dedication of the Memorial. Four buglers then played The Last Post. This was followed by the male voice choir singing Sullivan's Homeland and the buglers then played The Reveille. The ceremony ended with the singing of the National Anthem.
Wreaths were then laid by the Mayor, Mr C. Haughton (who had lost three sons in the War) deposited on behalf of ex-servicemen. There were also wreaths from Mrs Partington (the ex-Mayor), the police, Mr Dickinson (headmaster of Glossop Grammar School) and many other organisations.
The Mayor, Lord Howard, Lord Doverdale and Council Officials along with the Glossop Old Band then left

The original M&LR single-storey offices facing Hunt's Bank Approach were built in the Italianate style in sandstone ashlar with slate roofs in 1844. They were later enlarged and given a second storey. William Dawes built the station's larger extension for the L&YR in 1909. It is at right-angles to the north end of the old station giving the enlarged station an L-shaped plan. Facing Victoria Station Approach, its fa??ade is in the Edwardian neo-Baroque style, four storeys high and 31 bays to the rounded corner at the south-east end. The ground floor windows have rounded heads and those on the floors above are square. The ornate glass and iron canopy along the fa??ade displays the names of destinations that the station served in Art Nouveau lettering. The canopy was damaged by the Provisional IRA's 1996 bomb placed in a street adjacent to the Arndale Centre and was restored four years later.
Heritage features in the concourse were restored during the 2013-15 renovation, they include the caf?? with its glass dome and mosaic lettering which was originally the first-class dining room, the adjacent bookstall, and the original 1909 wood-panelled booking hall. In the entrance is a large, white glazed tiled map showing the former network of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway.
Underneath the map is a bronze World War I war memorial with effigies of Saint George and Saint Michael at each end which was installed in 1923. At the south end of the concourse is the 'soldier's gate' which opened to the former fish docks from where thousands of soldiers departed for World War I and where a bronze plaque was erected to commemorate them. The gateway was restored in 2015 and a steel screen inserted featuring a map of World War I Commonwealth grave cemeteries in Northern France and Belgium.

The company previously traded as Warrington Borough Transport up until 2006 and as Network Warrington between 2006 and 2018. With the launch of the 'Cheshire Cats' brand in 2018 the company rebranded as Warrington's Own Buses.

Warrington's Own Buses operate 89 routes across the Warrington borough, Cheshire and Greater Manchester. With 40 of them being school/college contract routes.
Warrington's Own Buses offer a wide range of ticket options for passengers, including singles, returns and all day tickets. Smartcard ticketing is also available for periods up to one year.

As with many foods, this was originally a way to preserve the food so that it could be eaten months later. Pickled eggs have since become a favorite among many as a snack or hors d'?uvre popular in pubs, bars and taverns, and around the world in places where beer is served.
After the eggs are hard boiled, the shell is removed and they are submerged in a solution of vinegar, salt, spices, and other seasonings. Recipes vary from the traditional brine solution for pickles, to other solutions, which can impart a sweet or spicy taste.
The final taste is largely determined by the pickling solution. The eggs are left in this solution from one day to several months. Prolonged exposure to the pickling solution may result in a rubbery texture. A common practice is to puncture the egg with a toothpick to allow the pickling solution to penetrate to the egg's interior, but this is dangerous as it can introduce clostridium into the finished product.[1] Eggs prepared with this method have sometimes had high enough levels of botulinum toxin to cause illness in a human.

The brewery was founded by Adrian Slater, a skilled brewer, and Roger Langford, a farmer with space in a barn and a love for proper beer. Roger's farm is in Weetwood Common, near Tarporley in Cheshire and the brewery took the name.
From day one, the brewery combined in-depth knowledge of a very large brewery with the passion, dedication, service and humility of a small business. Weetwood's enduring reputation for consistency and quality developed and a large, loyal following resulted.
Word spread, awards were won and output increased. A talented team of skilled people was built up and a new, bigger brewery was built. In 2014, Adrian and Roger took a well-deserved step back and new owners Phil McLaughlin and Laura Humby arrived. Phil and Laura are a brother-and-sister team who bring passion, experience and enthusiasm to continue to produce and supply great beers.
The founders remain involved along with most, if not all, of the original customers, still serving Weetwood Ales for beer lovers who come back for another.

A chapel of ease known as Trinity Chapel was built on the site in 1708 to relieve pressure on the parish church of St Elphin's. It was built as an oratory by Peter Legh of Lyme Park. Historically, most of the town was in Cheshire, but the area to the north of the Mersey was in Lancashire. Stockport in the 16th century was a small town entirely on the south bank of the Mersey, and known for the cultivation of hemp and manufacture of rope. In the 18th century the town had one of the first mechanised silk factories in the British Isles. it was an automated mini-Post Office. The K4 kiosk was enormous and was half as big again as the K2 kiosk. The K4 was introduced in limited numbers in Britain and production ceased within five years. Only 5 examples remain and are given Grade II listing status by English Heritage.
Design
The K4 kiosk is constructed of cast-iron sections, standing on a concrete base. The footprint of the K4 is rectangular, with one axis half as large again as the other. In form the K4 is a cuboid with a domed roof. Each side has fluted architrave moldings at the outer edge. At the base is a blank rectangular panel with trim molding-surround. Three sides of the kiosk are glazed with six rows of three rectangular panes of glass, edged with reeded moldings
on the longer sides there is an extra panel with trim molding to break up the mass.
Between 1930 and 1935 only 50 examples of the K4 were installed. They remain a very rare sight. There are only 5 (10% of all K4 kiosks) separate listings for the K4 kiosk with English Heritage, and none elsewhere in Britain. These K4s are all outside London, in Bewdley (Worcestershire), Roos (East Yorkshire), Frodsham (Cheshire) and Warrington (Cheshire). Of the eight kiosk types introduced by the General Post Office, the K4 was the six-most populous type introduced, but the joint fourth-most populous type in terms of surviving kiosks. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AF866H - The K4 kiosk was designed by the Engineering Department of the General Post Office. It used the successful design of the K2 kiosk, by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, expanded to include a post box and stamp machine
it was an automated mini-Post Office. The K4 kiosk was enormous and was half as big again as the K2 kiosk. The K4 was introduced in limited numbers in Britain and production ceased within five years. Only 5 examples remain and are given Grade II listing status by English Heritage.
Design
The K4 kiosk is constructed of cast-iron sections, standing on a concrete base. The footprint of the K4 is rectangular, with one axis half as large again as the other. In form the K4 is a cuboid with a domed roof. Each side has fluted architrave moldings at the outer edge. At the base is a blank rectangular panel with trim molding-surround. Three sides of the kiosk are glazed with six rows of three rectangular panes of glass, edged with reeded moldings
on the longer sides there is an extra panel with trim molding to break up the mass.
Between 1930 and 1935 only 50 examples of the K4 were installed. They remain a very rare sight. There are only 5 (10% of all K4 kiosks) separate listings for the K4 kiosk with English Heritage, and none elsewhere in Britain. These K4s are all outside London, in Bewdley (Worcestershire), Roos (East Yorkshire), Frodsham (Cheshire) and Warrington (Cheshire). Of the eight kiosk types introduced by the General Post Office, the K4 was the six-most populous type introduced, but the joint fourth-most populous type in terms of surviving kiosks. What are the main causes of heating appliance fires?
Space heaters regularly cause fatalities in the home. Most accidents are caused by people's behaviour rather than technical faults in the appliances themselves. For example, standing or sitting too close to the heater, allowing clothing or other items to come too close, or leaving heaters on overnight can all cause accidents.
Who is most at risk?
Those in the age ranges 0-4 years and 70 years and over have the highest risk. Women over 70 are most at risk, as there are more women than men in this higher age group. Men are more at risk in the 30-69 age range, which may be because they are more likely to be impaired by drink or drugs at this age, or because they are more likely to tackle a fire on their own.
People living alone, those living in terraced houses and houses in multiple occupation, or in rented accommodation, and those on low incomes all tend to be at greater risk.

It was one of the first Memorials to be erected on the Western Front and commemorates the men of the 36th (Ulster) Division and all those from Ulster who served in the First World War. The memorial was officially opened on 19 November 1921 and is a very close copy of Helen's Tower which stands in the grounds of the Clandeboye Estate, near Bangor, County Down, Northern Ireland. The brothers teamed up with a Bolton chemist, William Hough Watson, who became an early business partner. Watson invented the process which resulted in a new soap, using glycerin and vegetable oils such as palm oil, rather than tallow.
The resulting soap was a good, free-lathering soap, at first named Honey Soap then later named Sunlight Soap. Production reached 450 tons per week by 1888. Larger premises were built on marshes at Bromborough Pool on the Wirral Peninsula at what became Port Sunlight.
Though the company was named Lever Brothers, William Lever's brother and co-director James never took a major part in running the business. He fell ill in 1895, probably as a result of diabetes, and resigned his directorship two years later

It is a popular misconception that Thelwall is the 'smallest city in England' (although Thelwall is not in fact a city, nor if it were would it be the smallest in England as the City of London, which truly is the smallest city in England, is marginally smaller).
A fortified village was established at Thelwall in 923 during the reign of King Edward the Elder, which is mentioned in two very early sources, including the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle:

An inscription on the Pickering Arms records that In the year 920 King Edward the Elder founded a city here and called it Thelwall. According to Sir Peter Leycester it was so called from the stakes and stumps, cut from the trees, wherewith it was environed about as a wall. It is more likely that the original meaning of Thelwall was pool by a plank bridge (the earliest record of the name is in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle for 923 as Thelw??l, in 1241 it occurs as Thelewell).

SELF-made Manchester mosaicist Mark Kennedy has had seven mosaic art pieces installed on Tib Street along the wall of Affleck's Palace. The colourful and cracked pieces feature the likes of Eric Cantona, Colin Bell, Karl Marx, Morrissey, Ian Brown, Emmeline Pankhurst, Bet Lynch and many other 'legends' associated with Manchester.
In total Kennedy has spent almost 20 years crafting the two sets of mosaics amongst other on-going work. The theme on Affleck's is Manchester heroes, with a nod given the shopping bazaar's rock'n'roll past. Thus among the great figures of Manchester depicted there are musicians, actors, media and radical politicians.
He also couldn't help including something from his own Manchester memories of Tib Street.
When I was a little kid I used to go to Tib Street all the time to get my ferrets and buy mice from a little pet shop and that's where we all used to go. Next door was Tib Street Joke Shop that used to sell masks and stink bombs so there's one piece that represents all that.
You have to have a closer look at some of the new mosaics to fully appreciate them with some of them holding a few hidden surprises. Kennedy's take on Joy Division's classic Unknown Pleasures album cover features several tiny coloured tile fragments to set it apart from the now iconic original.

The installation was visited by the Princes William and Harry and the Duchess of Cambridge on the day of its opening, and by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh on 16 October. It is estimated that five million people saw the memorial, and the huge visitor demand saw Prime Minister David Cameron and other politicians join calls to try and extend the period for which the installation remained at the Tower so that more visitors would be able to pay their respects.
Tower officials resisted such calls, stating that the transience of the installation was a key part of the artistic concept, and that the poppies would be removed as planned and distributed to their purchasers. On 8 November it was announced that the Wave segment ? a steel construction with poppies around the Tower entrance ? would remain in place until the end of the month, and that the Wave and the Weeping Window segments (both made by the Theatre Royal, Plymouth) would be taken on a tour of the UK lasting until 2018, and would then go on permanent display at the Imperial War Museums in London and Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXKNP - John Howard, the eighteenth century prison reformer once lodged on this site. The tablet was erected on 31st December 1906 by the Warrington Society. The unveiling ceremony took place in May 1907, on the anniversary of the publication of Howard's work, 'The State of the Prisons in England and Wales'. Mayor Griffith pulled back the green curtain, and addressing those who had gathered for the ceremony, saying that although there had been many memorials to John Howard, he did not think there were any to beat this in beauty or appropriateness, because he was in a way a Warrington man.
John Howard (1726-1790). John Howard became famous for the 'State of Prisons in England and Wales', which was written and published in Warrington in 1777 at Egres Press in Horsemarket Street. He was born in Hackney and the fortune left to him by his father in 1742 allowed him to travel. In 1756, the year after the death of his wife, he travelled to Lisbon. He was captured by a French Privateer and taken to Brest Prison. A short captivity left a lasting impression of the bad treatment given to prisoners of war. He married for a second time and moved to Cardington, near Bedfordshire, where he became the High-Sheriff. He recognised that many prisoners were being held unfairly in prison without being tried and even when they had been found innocent, until family and friends bribed the jailers to let them out. He began a series of tours around Great Britain and Ireland investigating the conditions of prisoners. He wrote about what he observed and made recommendation. As a result of these actions, two laws were passed in 1774, one providing a fixed salary for jailers, the other enforcing cleanliness. Much of the remainder of his life was spent touring the prisons on the mainland and the continent. He visited Warrington many times during his life, for many months at a time. In 1774 he was visiting the northern countries to re-invigorate his prison studies.

The group offers support to those who need it on a 1-2-1 basis and is treated with great confidentiality, and point people in the right direction of the services they require.
They meet throughout the year mainly to have a brew and chat about life in general, to meet and make new friends, and for those who require extra support, to help by signposting to relevant services in Warrington. We also at times hold activities such as bowling, theatre trips, quizzes and games.
They also have nights out in the town centre at Cotton Mill or Show Bar and take part with events they are holding, or even have the odd night out to Manchester to Canal Street or to the theatre.
During the year they are also visited by guest speakers.
They welcome visitors and potential new members whatever their sexuality, though is open to 18+ only.

The first to be constructed was the Whispering Knights, a dolmen that dates to the Early or Middle Neolithic period and which was likely to have been used as a place of burial. This was followed by the King's Men, a stone circle which was constructed in the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age

The club moved to its current home of Broad Lane in 1892 with a new clubhouse. There have been several new clubhouses built on the existing site with the most recent developments coming in the late 1980's with significant improvements to the facilities in 2011.
In the early days the club played a number of friendly matches. Grappers then played regular fixtures up to the 2nd World War. The 70's & 80's ? the golden years
In 1981, after a couple of good seasons following promotion to the top division in the late 70's, the 1st XI won the top flight for the first time. One of Grappenhall's best teams, it included some famous Grappers names such as Duncan Martindale, Rick Houghton, Chris Ashton, Neil Titchard, Jim Green, Nick Sharp and a young Neil Fairbrother, only a few years before he headed off for big things with Lancashire and England.

The George and Dragon is a public house in the village of Great Budworth, Cheshire, England. It is designated by English Heritage as a Grade II listed building.
Great Budworth is a village that was formerly in the estate of Arley Hall. In the later part of the 19th century, its owner, Rowland Egerton-Warburton, undertook a campaign to restore the village and render it picturesque in Victorian eyes.
The George and Dragon was at that time a simple three-bay Georgian inn. In 1875 Egerton-Warburton commissioned the Chester architect John Douglas to undertake the restoration. Douglas added tall rubbed chimneys, mullioned windows and a steep pyramidal turret
On each side of the porch is an oak post-and-rail fence inscribed with a number of sayings. Above the inner door is a stone containing a verse written by Egerton-Warburton. Internally, in the bar, is a stone inscribed in Latin and the date 1722

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HE18E9 - Church House in Belfast, Northern Ireland is the headquarters of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. Although there was a decision taken to move to a new location the General Assembly, in 2005, voted to overturn the decision. Since the refurbishment, in 1992, Church House is now open for functions as a commercial conference centre.
The building is located near the centre of Belfast at the junction of Fisherwick Place, Great Victoria Street, Howard Street and Grosvenor Road. It was built in 1905, in the Gothic style, and opened by the Duke of Argyll. Church House is dominated by a 40m high clock tower, which contains Belfast's only peal of 12 bells.
Church House is home to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. The Assembly Hall is oval shaped with gallery, it can seat 1,300 people. The hall is illuminated by a glass skylight, which is now illuminated artificially.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEEGAN - Belfast City Hall is the civic building of Belfast City Council. Located in Donegall Square, Belfast, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, it faces north and effectively divides the commercial and business areas of the city centre.
The site now occupied by Belfast City Hall was once the home of the White Linen Hall, an important international Linen Exchange. The Street that runs from the back door of Belfast City Hall through the middle of Linen Quarter is Linen Hall Street.
Plans for the City Hall began in 1888 when Belfast was awarded city status by Queen Victoria. This was in recognition of Belfast's rapid expansion and thriving linen, rope-making, shipbuilding and engineering industries. During this period Belfast briefly overtook Dublin as the most populous city in Ireland.
Construction began in 1898 under the supervision of architect Sir Alfred Brumwell Thomas and was completed in 1906 at a cost of ?369,000. Belfast Corporation (now the council) used their profits from the gas industry to pay for the construction of Belfast City Hall. Local firms H&J Martin and WH Stephens were among the companies involved in construction. James G. Gamble, architect, was the clerk of works.

'Art for Art's Sake' is a single from the 'How dare You!' album, by the British Pop/Rock band 10cc. It was released in 1975. The band were Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme. They were all played multiple instruments and most of the band's albums were recorded at their own Strawberry Studios (North) in Stockport, England. I used to work about 2 minutes walk away from it. Eric Stewart engineered most releases.
Most of the band were from Manchester and grew up together as kids. They were originally rejected by The Beatles Apple label. Jonathan King signed the band to his UK Records label in July 1972 and dubbed them 10cc. By his own account, King chose the name after having a dream in which he was standing in front of the Hammersmith Odeon in London where the boarding read '10cc The Best Band in the World'.
A widely repeated claim, disputed by King and Godley, but confirmed in a 1988 interview by Creme, and also on the webpage of Gouldman's current lineup, is that the band name represented a volume of semen that was more than the average amount ejaculated by men, thus emphasising their potency or prowess.
The band had a canon of hits in teh mid 1970's. In February 1975 the band announced they had signed with Mercury Records for US$1 million. The catalyst for the deal was one song \u2013 'I'm Not in Love'.
A compilation album 'Changing Faces - The Very Best of 10cc and Godley &
Creme' is a good intro to the band.

The Lowry is a combined theatre and gallery complex situated in Salford Quays, in Salford, England. It is named after the early 20th century painter, L. S. Lowry, known for this paintings of industrial scenes in North West England.
Designed by Michael Wilford and Buro Happold, (Wayfinding System and 'Artworks at the Lowry Gallery' by Reich + Petch) the building was completed in 1999 costing \u00a3120 million.
Funding was helped by \u00a321m of National Lottery grant. The aerofoil canopy at the entrance is clad with perforated steel and illuminated from the inside at night. It was officially opened on 12 October 2000 by Queen Elizabeth II.
When I was a lad the dock complex at the Pomona Salford Docks was very run down and a good place to be picked off by a .22 air rifle pellet. Today the showcase Lowry has been joined by The Imperial War Museum North a shopping complex and MediaCityUK. This is a 200 acre complex, whose The main tenant upon initial completion will be the BBC at its new 12,500m\u00b2 BBC Centre.
When completed, the development will have an unusual feature in that the streets will not bear any names, but will instead be identified by colours alone. The address of the BBC will, for example, be 'Blue'. The BBC have a long history in the city, BBC's very first regional TV studio was also in Manchester \u2013 Studio A at Dickenson Road \u2013 which it had bought from Mancunian Films in 1954. A place where Top of The Pops was originally filmed.
BBC North West will relocate to the site from its current premises in Oxford Road, Manchester.

From the reign of Henry II, the village of Stretton was owned by the Starkey family and it is likely that a chapel was built for the family during the 13th or 14th century. In a will dated 1527 the chapel is referred to as the Oratory of St Saviour. In Leycester's history of Cheshire it is stated that in 1666 the ancient chapel of Stretton was ruinous and in decay. In 1826?27 a Commissioners' Church was built as a chapel of ease to Great Budworth. It was designed by Philip Hardwick and accommodated 250 people. In 1859 Richard Greenall, vicar and Archdeacon of Chester, commissioned George Gilbert Scott to build a chancel, which he did. Its in an unloved street near an old cabinet works building. On this day I passed the lights were on so I walked in. No tripod, so the panorama was hand held.
Cairo Street Chapel is the second oldest surviving place of worship in Warrington and is tucked away just away from the modern shopping area. It holds a lot of history of the town in many of the characters connected with it.
Robert Yates was the founder, ejected from the Church of England in 1662, he obtained a licence for public worship. In 1689, religious dissent was permitted by the Act of Toleration. This Act enabled Dissenters to build their own places of worship and in 1703, following the raising of sufficient money through subscriptions, a chapel was built on land behind Randle Myddleton's Smithy in Sankey Street. This is now Cairo Street.
A deed signed between Dr. Charles Owen Minister of the Chapel and the Earl of Warrington refers to a late erected building or meeting place.
It was during the ministry of Dr. Owen in 1745 that the present larger chapel was built.
Dr. Owen was the minister of the chapel for fifty years from 1696 to 1746 and it was he who lead consolidation and growth of the chapel.
In 1863 the chapel was extensively repaired, the old gallery was taken down and the interior re-seated to make it look much as it does in this photograph.
The Revd. John Seddon followed Charles Owen in the Ministry at Cairo Street Chapel or Sankey Street Chapel as it was then known. The son of a dissenting Minister born in Hereford and educated at Caleb Rotherham's Academy in Kendal, he campaigned and fundraised tirelessly for the establishment in 1757 of The Warrington Academy.
He was a lecturer at the Academy, its Secretary and Minister of the Chapel. Active in many spheres of dissenting and town life, John Seddon was the first President of The Warrington Public Library.

The Portland stone on the left is the resting place of 402813 Flight Sergeant LD Watson (Royal Australian Air Force, died 20th March 1943 aged 24). On the right is 401498 Flight sergeant WDK Forbes (Royal Australian Air Force, died 20th March 1943 aged 23).
The airmen here most likely were in a plane that crashed nearby, hence the mix of nationalities including Canadian airmen.
The CWGC was established by Royal Charter in 1917, founded by Sir Fabian Ware and is non profit making. Each gravestone is named, uniform and permanent. No distinction is made on account of rank, race or creed.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HD9C - Leith is a suburb of Edinburgh where it meets the sea. It lies on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, Lothian, Scotland UK. Leith had electric street lighting from 1890, and electric trams from 1905 (only Blackpool was earlier in the UK). the trams are returning at great cost and more changes have improved teh Leith waterfront in recent years.
The Malmaison Hotel, beside the entrance to Leith Docks, at the Shore, Leith, shown here was formerly a sailors' home. The Sailors' Home used to provide accommodation for sailors whose ships were in port. The Home contained comfortable rooms for each rank, a canteen, a low cost clothing shop, recreational rooms and a chapel.
It was an innovation in social care at a time when many workers lived in overcrowded slums. The angel in the stonework above the door was an emblem for the seamen's mission. Much investment has been made to improve the area from The City of Edinburgh District Council, Forth Ports Authority and the Water of Leith Conservation Trust.
The statue to the left is of Sandy Irvine Robertson OBE, wine merchant, charity promoter, founder of Scottish Business Achievement Awards, once wrote of as one of those people who made life worth living. A bear of a man, standing six and a half feet tall, he had a heart the size of Scotland. He was mischievous, often outrageous, but never unkind, and those of us privileged to have known his friendship will be eternally grateful for it. Praise indeed.
Leith is known for its port and red wine imports and I assume he was linked to 'Irvine Robertson Wines' who are located just up the road. After his premature death (Born: 11 August, 1942, in Stirling Died: 20 June, 1999, aged 56), his friends commissioned a bronze statue on the waterfront at Leith. It was sculpted by Lucy Poett. She studied under Cubilt Bevis at The Heatherley School of Art in London and with the late Scott Sutherland RSA in Dundee.

Built by the Manchester Ship Canal Company, Salford Docks was the larger of two sections that made up Manchester Docks
the other being Pomona Docks to the east.
They were opened in 1894 by Queen Victoria and spanned 120 acres (49 ha) of water and 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land. At their height the Manchester Docks were the third busiest port in Britain, but after containerisation and the limit placed on vessel size on the Manchester Ship Canal, the docks declined during the 1970s. They closed in 1982, resulting in the loss of 3000 jobs
