William Foster & Co. was a Lincoln company in the early 20th century and was instrumental in the invention of the tank - a machine that is said to have cut short World War 1 and saved millions of lives.
This memorial to Foster and the others who helped him - including William Tritton - shows the shape of the early tanks and represents tha teamwork across Lincoln to bring the tank into existence. It is suitable located on the roundabout at the beginning of Tritton Road, named after the local engineer himself.

Referring to its sculptural interest, the citation states that the sculptural work is exceptional and is arguably Tyson Smith's finest and most powerful work. The design is considered to have contemporary significance in that rather than using allegory and heroic idealisation, it employs powerful and modern realist portrayals. The quality of its craftsmanship is praised, and it is also to have group value in its location near other listed buildings

Glossop Borough Council had set up a War Memorial Commitee to decide on what memorials should be erected around the Borough. The design that was decided on was a stepped stone base with bronze plaques inscribed with the names of those who lost their lives. On top of the stone base is a winged figure of Victory holding a laurel wreath. She is standing with one foot on the globe and another on the neck of a snake, representing evil. The bronze statue has been attributed to Vernon March, who also made the National War Monument in Ottowa, Ontario, Canada.

The War Memorials at Glossop and Hadfield are identical. They were both dedicated on the same day, Sunday 26th March 1922. On the day of the dedication miniature evergreens had been planted around the base.
A procession of the Mayor (S. Bamforth), Lord Howard, Lord Doverdale (Edward Partington), the War Memorial Committee and other officials made their way from the Town Hall to Norfolk Square at 2.30pm. Lord Howard had been asked to unveil the War Memorial. He gave a short speech stating:
that he felt much honoured in having been asked to unveil that monument, which all of them had subscribed to, to enable it to be raised in that square.
The Rev. W. M. Martin-Ellis, Vicar of Whitfield, then performed the dedication of the Memorial. Four buglers then played The Last Post. This was followed by the male voice choir singing Sullivan's Homeland and the buglers then played The Reveille. The ceremony ended with the singing of the National Anthem.
Wreaths were then laid by the Mayor, Mr C. Haughton (who had lost three sons in the War) deposited on behalf of ex-servicemen. There were also wreaths from Mrs Partington (the ex-Mayor), the police, Mr Dickinson (headmaster of Glossop Grammar School) and many other organisations.
The Mayor, Lord Howard, Lord Doverdale and Council Officials along with the Glossop Old Band then left

The Church stands not east-west but square to the Roman Road north through Carlisle (the A6, in town Blackfriars St). It is therefore of early foundation, perhaps before St Cuthbert's visit to Carlisle in 685. The present Church, probably the fourth on the site, dates from 1778.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DD4HA1 - HMS Belfast is a Town-class light cruiser that was built for the Royal Navy. She is now permanently moored as a museum ship on the River Thames in London and is operated by the Imperial War Museum.
Construction of Belfast, the first ship in the Royal Navy to be named after the capital city of Northern Ireland and one of ten Town-class cruisers, began in December 1936. She was launched on St Patrick's Day 1938. Commissioned in early August 1939 shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, Belfast was initially part of the British naval blockade against Germany. In November 1939, Belfast struck a German mine and spent more than two years undergoing extensive repairs. Belfast returned to action in November 1942 with improved firepower, radar equipment, and armour. Belfast saw action escorting Arctic convoys to the Soviet Union during 1943 and in December 1943 played an important role in the Battle of North Cape, assisting in the destruction of the German warship Scharnhorst. In June 1944, Belfast took part in Operation Overlord supporting the Normandy landings. In June 1945, Belfast was redeployed to the Far East to join the British Pacific Fleet, arriving shortly before the end of the Second World War. Belfast saw further combat action in 195052 during the Korean War and underwent an extensive modernisation between 1956 and 1959. A number of further overseas commissions followed before Belfast entered reserve in 1963.
In 1967, efforts were initiated to avert Belfast's expected scrapping and to preserve her as a museum ship. A joint committee of the Imperial War Museum, the National Maritime Museum, and the Ministry of Defence were established and then reported in June 1968 that preservation was practical. In 1971, the government decided against preservation, prompting the formation of the private HMS Belfast Trust to campaign for her preservation. The efforts of the Trust were successful, and the government transferred the ship to the Trust in July 1971.

Today a track from a band who were critically examined by few, and are unfortunately remembered for their glam rock and 'Marc' teenpop TV shows period. I hope this track will urge you to look a bit deeper into them or dig out that old black 7 or 12 inch player.
T. Rex were an English rock band fronted by guitarist, singer and songwriter Marc Bolan. Formed as Tyrannosaurus Rex in 1960s London, the folk rock group's debut album 'My People Were Fair and Had Sky in Their Hair... But Now They're Content to Wear Stars on Their Brows' in 1968 reached number 15 in the UK.
In the 1970s, they achieved mainstream success as a glam rock band with the hits 'Get It On', 'Ride a White Swan', '20th Century Boy', 'Children of the Revolution', 'Hot Love', 'Telegram Sam' and 'Metal Guru'. After waning commercial success in the mid-70s, T. Rex ended in 1977 after Bolan was killed at the wheel of his Mini in a car accident.
'King of the Rumbling Spires' in 1970 was the beginning of the transition to a full electric rock/pop band rather than the folky origins of the band. The early 1970's brought a clutch of hits, many covered by Bauhaus and others

EMI even gave Bolan his own record label in the UK\u2014T. Rex Records, the 'T. Rex Wax Co.'. However by 1973 its said that success, money, cocaine, and brandy had become the downfall of the band, with a number of members leaving.
In the summer of 1976 a resurgence started. T. Rex released two more singles, 'I Love to Boogie' (which charted at number 13) and 'Laser Love', which made number 42. In early 1977 Dandy in the Underworld was released to critical acclaim.
Bolan had slimmed down and regained his elfin looks, and the songs too had a stripped-down, streamlined sound. A spring UK tour with punk band The Damned on support garnered positive reviews. As Bolan was enjoying a new surge in popularity, he talked about performing again with old band members, as well as reuniting with legendary producer Tony Visconti.
It was not to be however. Marc Bolan and his girlfriend Gloria Jones spent the evening of 15th September 1977 drinking at the Speakeasy and then dining at Morton's club on Berkeley Square, in Mayfair central London. While driving home early the morning of 16 September, Jones crashed Bolan's purple Mini 1275GT into a tree (now the site of Bolan's Rock Shrine), at Barnes Bridge, Barnes, South West London.
This was less than a mile from his home at 142 Upper Richmond Road West in East Sheen. While Jones was severely injured, Bolan was killed in the crash, two weeks before his 30th birthday. Taken from us, who knows what could have been...

King's College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge, England. Founded in 1441 by Henry VI, the college's formal name is 'The King's College of Our Lady and St. Nicholas in Cambridge'. It is usually referred to simply as 'King's' within the university.
Originally, the college was to be specifically for boys from Eton College. It was not until 1865 that the first non-Etonian undergraduates arrived to study at King's, and the first fellow to have not attended Eton was elected in 1873. The connection with Eton is now weak, but a scholarship to attend the college, exclusively available to students from Eton, is still awarded each year.
The Gatehouse, was built in the neo-Gothic style and adorned with a clock. The chapel is the most impressive in the city.
Famous Alumni include J.G.Ballard, Stephen Poliakoff, Salman Rushdie, John Maynard Keynes and Alan Turing.

The Portland stone on the left is the resting place of 402813 Flight Sergeant LD Watson (Royal Australian Air Force, died 20th March 1943 aged 24). On the right is 401498 Flight sergeant WDK Forbes (Royal Australian Air Force, died 20th March 1943 aged 23).
The airmen here most likely were in a plane that crashed nearby, hence the mix of nationalities including Canadian airmen.
The CWGC was established by Royal Charter in 1917, founded by Sir Fabian Ware and is non profit making. Each gravestone is named, uniform and permanent. No distinction is made on account of rank, race or creed.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CET17D - Imperial War Museum North (sometimes referred to as IWM North) is a museum in the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford in Greater Manchester, England. One of five branches of the Imperial War Museum, it explores the impact of modern conflicts on people and society. It is the first branch of the Imperial War Museum to be located in the north of England.
The museum occupies a site overlooking the Manchester Ship Canal in Trafford Park, an area which during the Second World War was a key industrial centre and consequently heavily bombed during the Manchester Blitz in 1940. The area is now home to the Lowry cultural centre and the MediaCityUK development, which stand opposite the museum at Salford Quays.
The museum building was designed by architect Daniel Libeskind and opened in July 2002, receiving 470,000 visitors in its first year of opening. It was recognised with awards or prize nominations for its architecture, but has also been criticised for poor energy efficiency. The museum features a permanent exhibition of chronological and thematic displays, supported by hourly audiovisual presentations which are projected throughout the gallery space.
The museum also hosts a programme of temporary exhibitions in a separate gallery. Since opening, the museum has operated a successful volunteer programme, which since January 2007 has been run in partnership with Manchester Museum. As part of a national museum, Imperial War Museum North is financed by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and by self-generated income.
