Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9DMX - Manchester Town Hall is a Victorian, Neo-gothic municipal building in Manchester, England. It is the ceremonial headquarters of Manchester City Council and houses a number of local government departments. The building faces Albert Square to the north, featuring the Albert Memorial and St Peter's Square to the south, home to The Cenotaph.
Designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse, the town hall was completed in 1877. The building contains offices and grand ceremonial rooms such as the Great Hall which is decorated with Ford Madox Brown's imposing Manchester Murals illustrating the history of the city. The entrance and Sculpture Hall contain busts and statues of influential figures including Dalton, Joule and Barbirolli. In 1927 the British magazine Country Life published a set of three articles on the house, in which Christopher Hussey, near the start of his 50-year career as an architectural authority and documenter of British country houses, described Brympton d'Evercy as the most incomparable house in Britain, the one which created the greatest impression and summarises so exquisitely English country life qualities. His articles remain the only detailed account of the house, which in its long history has belonged to six families: the D'Evercys, the Stourtons, the Sydenhams, the Fanes, the Weeks (1992“2008), and the Glossop family in 2008. Building was begun by the D'Evercy family about 1220 and proceeded slowly into the 18th century. For 750 years it remained little known or recorded. For a few years after the Second World War it held a boys' school, before being reclaimed by its owners as a private house. This it remains, although it is occasionally hired out as a location for filming or a hospitality event.

Brympton d'Evercy was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Brunetone, meaning brown enclosure, from the Old English brun and tun.
The village of Brympton is larger today than at any time in its history. Until the 20th century, it barely qualified as a village, having been deserted in the 14th century. It consisted only of a few cottages scattered along the long drive to the secluded mansion.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDJNYY - The Picton Reading Room and Hornby Library are two grade II* listed buildings on William Brown Street, Liverpool, England which now form part of the Liverpool Central Library.
Chairman of the William Brown Library and Museum Sir James Picton laid the foundation stone of the Picton Reading Room in 1875. It was designed by Cornelius Sherlock, and modelled after the British Museum Reading Room, and was the first electrically lit library in the UK.
It was completed in 1879. The front is semicircular with Corinthian columns, and the shape was chosen by the architect to cover the change in the axis of the row of buildings at this point. The Hornby Reading Room (named after Hugh Frederick Hornby) by Thomas Shelmerdine was added in 1906. It stands behind the older building and the interior is decorated in the Edwardian Imperial style

The George and Dragon is a public house in the village of Great Budworth, Cheshire, England. It is designated by English Heritage as a Grade II listed building.
Great Budworth is a village that was formerly in the estate of Arley Hall. In the later part of the 19th century, its owner, Rowland Egerton-Warburton, undertook a campaign to restore the village and render it picturesque in Victorian eyes.
The George and Dragon was at that time a simple three-bay Georgian inn. In 1875 Egerton-Warburton commissioned the Chester architect John Douglas to undertake the restoration. Douglas added tall rubbed chimneys, mullioned windows and a steep pyramidal turret
On each side of the porch is an oak post-and-rail fence inscribed with a number of sayings. Above the inner door is a stone containing a verse written by Egerton-Warburton. Internally, in the bar, is a stone inscribed in Latin and the date 1722

It has been called the most beautiful house in England, a country noted for fine country houses. In 1927 the British magazine Country Life published a set of three articles on the house, in which Christopher Hussey, near the start of his 50-year career as an architectural authority and documenter of British country houses, described Brympton d'Evercy as the most incomparable house in Britain, the one which created the greatest impression and summarises so exquisitely English country life qualities. His articles remain the only detailed account of the house, which in its long history has belonged to six families: the D'Evercys, the Stourtons, the Sydenhams, the Fanes, the Weeks (1992“2008), and the Glossop family in 2008. Building was begun by the D'Evercy family about 1220 and proceeded slowly into the 18th century. For 750 years it remained little known or recorded. For a few years after the Second World War it held a boys' school, before being reclaimed by its owners as a private house. This it remains, although it is occasionally hired out as a location for filming or a hospitality event.

The house is part of a complex consisting of the mansion, its stables and other outbuildings, the parish church and a puzzling building known as the Priest House. Little remains of the original D'Evercy manor built between 1220 and 1325, as the present house has evolved on the same site.
Brympton d'Evercy was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Brunetone, meaning brown enclosure, from the Old English brun and tun.
The village of Brympton is larger today than at any time in its history. Until the 20th century, it barely qualified as a village, having been deserted in the 14th century. It consisted only of a few cottages scattered along the long drive to the secluded mansion.

A buttercross (as seen here), also known as butter cross, is a type of market cross associated with English market towns, such as Witney and dating from medieval times. Its name originates from the fact that they were located at the market place (same as today), where people from neighbouring villages would gather to buy locally produced butter, milk and eggs. The fresh produce was laid out and displayed on the circular stepped bases of the cross.
Their design varies from place to place, but they are usually covered by some type of roof to offer shelter, although the roofs were mostly added at a much later date than the original cross they cover.
Witney Market began in the Middle Ages. Thursday is the traditional market day and I have spent some interesting lunchtimes here. There is also a market on Saturday. The buttercross was built in about 1600 and its clock was added in 1683.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HDTJ - The super historic market square off the village green at Witney in lovely West Oxfordshire, sitting on the river Windrush, about 12 or so miles from Morses Oxford after a rain shower. It is also the constituancy of Mr Cameroone, current leader of the Tory party (possible prime minister or another ex-Tory leader if he fluffs that gig in May 2010).
A buttercross (as seen here), also known as butter cross, is a type of market cross associated with English market towns, such as Witney and dating from medieval times. Its name originates from the fact that they were located at the market place (same as today), where people from neighbouring villages would gather to buy locally produced butter, milk and eggs. The fresh produce was laid out and displayed on the circular stepped bases of the cross.
Their design varies from place to place, but they are usually covered by some type of roof to offer shelter, although the roofs were mostly added at a much later date than the original cross they cover.
Witney Market began in the Middle Ages. Thursday is the traditional market day and I have spent some interesting lunchtimes here. There is also a market on Saturday. The buttercross was built in about 1600 and its clock was added in 1683.

It was built as a private estate church towards the end of the 19th century but is now an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Liverpool, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth. The church is designated by English Heritage as a Grade II* listed building
The church was built in 1882“83 for the brewer Sir Gilbert Greenall of Walton Hall. It was designed by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, the cost of its construction being £17,500 (£1,490,000 as of 2013)

After Belfast was awarded city status by Queen Victoria in 1888 this magnificent building was first planned. . There was much rapid expansion and thriving linen, rope-making, shipbuilding and engineering industries at the time.
Architect Sir Alfred Brumwell Thomas supervised the start of construction in 1898 with completion in 1906 at a cost of approx \u00a3369,000.
Apparently Durban city hall in South Africa is a close replica of Belfast's City Hall
Later in the year when this originally taken (2004) just across from here in Donegal square, the Northern Bank Robbery took place 20th December.
