What makes the sign work, commercially and editorially, is the layering. It is not just a neon sign, it is a very deliberate bit of identity and wayfinding that signals a new use for an old structure. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJRA - Ian Kevin Curtis (15 July 1956 18 May 1980) was an English singer, songwriter and musician. He was the lead singer, songwriter, and occasional guitarist of the band Joy Division, with whom he released the albums Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980).
Curtis had severe epilepsy and depression and died by suicide on the eve of Joy Division's first North American tour, shortly before the release of Closer
On the evening of 17 May 1980, Curtis asked Deborah to drop her impending divorce proceedings
she replied that it was likely that he would have changed his mind by the following morning and then mindful of his previous suicide attempt and also concerned that his state of anxiety and frustration might drive Curtis into an epileptic seizure offered to spend the night in his company. Deborah then drove to her parents' home to inform them of her intentions. When she returned to the couple's home at 77 Barton Street in Macclesfield, his demeanour had changed and he informed his wife of his intentions to spend the night alone, first making her promise not to return to the house before he had taken his scheduled 10 a.m. train to Manchester to meet his bandmates.
In the early hours of the next morning, Curtis took his own life. He was 23 years old. He had used the kitchen's washing line to hang himself after having written a note to Deborah in which he declared his love for her despite his recent affair with Honoré. Deborah found his body soon after. In her 1995 biography, Touching from a Distance, Deborah recalls finding her husband's body and initially thinking that he was still alive before noticing the rope around his neck. According to Tony Wilson, Curtis spent the few hours before his suicide watching Werner Herzog's 1977 film Stroszek and listening to Iggy Pop's 1977 album The Idiot. raised and altered in C19. Mostly brown
handmade brick in English garden wall bond (3+1), with ashlar
plinth and dressings, slate roof. Probably double-depth plan,
all single-fronted.
Now 3 storeys but probably formerly 2 storeys, a 5-window
range. Offset left of centre are 2 doorways, that on the left
square-headed, with C18 rusticated and keyed wedge lintel,
the other round-headed with set-in architrave including
consoles to moulded lintel and small keystone. Left of these
doorways is a simple shop front framed by fluted pilasters
right of it are 2 shop windows, the 1st with plain surround
and the 2nd (incorporating a door) with sunk panel pilasters
and prominent cornice. At 1st floor are 5 windows with raised
sills and rusticated and keyed lintels. 2nd floor, of later
C19 brick has segmental-headed sashes with gauged red brick
heads. Most openings boarded at time of survey.
INTERIOR not accessible.
HISTORY: interesting example of Georgian town houses built in
narrow wiend, probably in earliest phase of domestic building
on rear of ancient burgage plots. In poor condition at time of
survey (1992). Forms group with Nos 4-14 opposite (qv).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTD310 - The building that is now The Old Wellington Inn was built in 1552 next to Manchester's market square. In 1554, it was purchased by the Byrom family and became part residence and part drapers shop. The writer John Byrom was born there in 1692. The premises were licensed in 1862 and became the Vintners Arms, then the Kenyon Vaults and later The Old Wellington Inn. The building was extended in the 18th century to house John Shaw's Punch House which, as the name suggests, was licensed for the sale of strong alcoholic punch and became a meeting place for High Tories and possibly Jacobites
Shaw was master of the punch house for 58 years until he died in 1796 at the age of 83. After Shaw's death the punch house was kept by Peter Fearnhead, with the assistance of Molly under the same rules, until it was sold about ten years later to William Goodall, who had been the proprietor of the Fleece Tavern at the opposite end of the Old Shambles. The new landlord demolished part of the building and converted the rest into The King's Head Tavern in 1807. It later became known as Sinclair's, until oysters were introduced to the menu in 1845 and it became Sinclair's Oyster Bar, the name it retains to this day
In 1974, most of the old property between Shudehill and Market Street was demolished to accommodate the new Arndale Shopping Centre. The Old Shambles was underpinned with a concrete raft and, according to the Greater Manchester County Records Office, jacked-up 4 feet 9 inches to fit in with this development in the newly created Shambles Square
In June 1996, an IRA bomb exploded in nearby Corporation Street and badly damaged many of the surrounding buildings. The buildings were subsequently dismantled and moved 70 metres northwards to their present location, close to Manchester Cathedral, in 1999. The Old Wellington Inn and Sinclair's were rebuilt at 90 degrees to each other and joined together by a stone extension to form two sides of the new Shambles Square

Albion Street, and the adjoining Volunteer Street both lead to the former Drill Hall, which was a recruiting centre during the First World War.
Many a young lad would have spent his King's Shilling in the bar of the Albion before going to face the horrors of the Western Front.

Brewery
Originally a steam brewery, with the engines now being powered by electricity, Arkell's is a tower brewery which works on the principle that raw materials are fed into the top of the building and beer comes out in casks at the bottom.
The brewery building is a Grade II listed building and the site has been designated an Urban Conservation Area by Swindon Borough Council.
Distribution
The brewery owns 92 pubs in the Swindon area and surrounds, including locations in Oxford, Newbury, Reading, Cheltenham, Gloucester and Ascot
and sells its products to free houses in the Thames Valley and London.
In 2005, the brewery entered into a contract with rail company First Great Western to have its beer stocked in their buffet cars

In this case a special coal train from Hulton Sidings, when approaching Bolton Terminal Station, got out of control. It was turned into one of the lines in the goods yard (Crook Street), ran through the yard on the metals, forced its way through the boundary wall, crossed the public road diagonally and completely wrecked two small dwelling-houses. The guard jumped from the brake-van
the driver and fireman remained on the footplate. None of the men suffered more than minor injuries. Eight persons living in the houses were injured, though fortunately not seriously. In addition to the damage to the engine and house property, five wagons were demolished and seven others damaged.

Its foundations and use as a malt house and drinking tavern date back to 1381. The low-beamed front bar area was put in place sometime in the 17th century. It was originally called the Spotted Cow but the name was changed in 1842, likely as part of an effort to extinguish its reputation as a venue for illegal gambling activities.
The pub is frequented primarily by university students (of both Oxford University and Oxford Brookes University).[citation needed] It is located at the end of a narrow winding alley, St Helens Passage (originally Hell's passage), between Holywell Street and New College Lane, near the Bridge of Sighs. Running along one side of the pub is one of the remaining sections of the old city wall. Due to the illegal activities of many of its original patrons, the Turf sprang up in an area just outside the city wall in order to escape the jurisdiction of the governing bodies of the local colleges.
The Turf Tavern is also where future Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke set a Guinness World Record for consuming a yard glass of ale in 11 seconds in 1954. Other public figures who have dined or drunk at the tavern include Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Tony Blair, CS Lewis, Stephen Hawking and Margaret Thatcher. It also served as a hangout for the cast and crew of the Harry Potter movies while the nearby colleges were used as locations throughout the filming of the series. The Turf Tavern also claims to be the location where future American president Bill Clinton, while a student at University College, Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, famously smoked but did not inhale marijuana.
It was also featured in the ITV TV Series Inspector Morse aired between 1987 and 2000

Hitch was responsible for the stonework grotesques on the exterior, and for a considerable amount of similar work in wood in the interior. Callcott created the pattern for the larger copper relief scenes, representing the day to day activities of the friars. . . . It seems probable that Callcott went on working on those reliefs until shortly before his death in 1925, when the rather more prestigious Henry Poole took over, to produce the relief work in the Small Saloon Bar. One of Callcott's frieze-like panels, entitled Saturday Afternoon, was to be repeated on the screen wall, separating the Luncheon Bar from the Small Saloon Bar, although it looks quite different in its new form, because the figures are much more widely spaced out, and the coloured marbles in the second rendering give it more depth.
Of these artists, Hitch (1841-1935), deserves to be better known. Following an apprenticeship to Farmer and Brindley, he had a very long and distinguished career as a sculptor: his work can be found at Cardiff Castle, suggesting that he was probably a member of William Burges's workforce there, and also in many churches and cathedrals including Truro Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. He was particularly associated with the architects W. D. Caröe and J. L. Pearson.
It is worth noting that the popular London Encyclopaedia disagrees about the dates and artists involved here, stating simply that the building was erected in 1875, the ground floor being remodelled in 1905 by H. Fuller Clark. The outside is covered with mosaics and carved figures by Henry Poole (1903).

A recognisable landmark of Belfast, the pub has featured as a location in numerous film and television productions, such as David Caffrey's Divorcing Jack (1998) and Carol Reed's classic 1947 film Odd Man Out.

The Crown owes its elaborate tiling, stained glass and woodwork to the Italian craftsmen whom Fanigan persuaded to work on the pub after hours. These craftsmen were brought to Ireland to work on the many new churches being built in Belfast at the time. It was this high standard of work that gave the Crown the reputation of being one of the finest Victorian Gin Palaces of its time.
In 1978, the National Trust, following persuasion by people including Sir John Betjeman, purchased the property and three years later completed a £400,000 renovation to restore the bar to its original Victorian state. Further restoration by the National Trust was done in 2007 at a cost of £500,000. This work is the subject of a BBC Northern Ireland documentary, The Crown Jewel, screened in 2008.
A recognisable landmark of Belfast, the pub has featured as a location in numerous film and television productions, such as David Caffrey's Divorcing Jack (1998) and Carol Reed's classic 1947 film Odd Man Out.

Duncan was born in Liverpool to Scottish parents. He was the nephew of James Currie, an earlier influential Liverpool physician. He was also the nephew of Henry Duncan of Ruthwell and received his early education in Scotland, under Henry Duncan's protection. William Henry Duncan qualified as a medical doctor in Edinburgh, returning to Liverpool to work in general practice. He was appointed Medical Officer of Health on 1 January 1847.
Duncan was one of the celebrated trio of pioneering officers appointed under a private act (the Liverpool Sanatory Act 1846) by the Borough's Health of the Town Committee
the others being James Newlands, Borough Engineer, and Thomas Fresh, Inspector of Nuisances (though it was recently discovered that Fresh had already been in a non-statutory version of the post for several years before this).
A pub in Liverpool called Doctor Duncan's is named in his honour. One of the buildings of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Liverpool is named after William Henry Duncan, The William Henry Duncan Building, whose entrance is off West Derby Street. The building houses the Institute of Ageing and Chronic Disease (link), research groups from the Institute of Translational Medicine and the Liverpool Biobank. Part funded by the EDRF the building also houses the Liverpool BioInnovation Hub

The history of the White Star has been traced back as far as 1880s. A programme from the Empire Theatre dated 1887 features an advertisement for the White Star Carvery and bar. The pub was almost the same as it is now, apart from where the telephone is, there used to be a dumb waiter. Where the gents is, was the back yard, and where the fruit machine now stands used to be the gents. Upstairs where the ladies toilets are, used to be the living accommodation.
There were no ladies toilets in the White Star until about 1987. There are a few pubs in city that did not allow ladies in on their own due to the amount of prostitutes that worked in the city from the end of the second world war until the early 90s. Just after the war a chap called Mr Quinn bought about 5 pubs in the city, he never changed the names, but on all the front windows he had etched Quinns, since then all the real ale drinkers in Liverpool and even the good beer guide have called it the White Star (Quinns 2).
The back room of the White Star was used by Bob Wooler and Alan Williams to pay all of their groups including the world famous Beatles. Where the Beatles wall is in the back room, is were they were paid. There are also a number of brass plaques on the front wall one to the Beatles, one twinned with the White Star Cz and two twinned with pubs in Norway. One with the Mets Sports Bar in Skien, and the Fat Lady in Grimstead.

The Princess Louise is a public house on High Holborn, London, famous for its remarkable interior, with wood panelling and a series of 'booths' around an island bar. It is a tied house, being owned by the Samuel Smith Brewery of Tadcaster, Yorkshire.
The building is protected by its Grade II listing[1] and has what has been described as a rich example of a Victorian public house interior, by William B Simpson and Sons
who contracted out the work. As it is considered so historically significant even the men's toilets, with their marble urinals, are listed. The pub, which is also listed on CAMRA's national inventory of historic pub interiors, was refurbished in 2007.
Being located near Bloomsbury, the British Museum and the University of London, it is patronised by professors and other educationalists.
In June 2009, the pub was joint winner of the best refurbishment class of the 2008 Pub Design Awards awarded annually by CAMRA.[4] Author Peter Haydon included the Princess Louise in his book The Best Pubs in London and rated it No. 5 in the capital, saying it had possibly the best preserved Victorian pub interior in London.
The Princess Louise is also notable for having been the venue for a number of influential folk clubs run by Ewan MacColl and others, which played an important part in the British folk revival of the late 1950s and early 1960s

Its a historic Art Nouveau Grade II masterpiece of a pub was built in 1905 on the site of a Dominican friary. The building was designed by architect H. Fuller-Clark and artist Henry Poole, both committed to the free-thinking of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Jolly friars appear everywhere in the pub in sculptures, mosaics and reliefs. We are lucky to still be here as our wonderful pub was saved from demolition by a campaign led by Sir John Betjeman.

The average price of our meals with rice is £8.00, but we always include Thai fragrant rice with our meals, we don't believe you so have to pay. It's like ordering Roast Beef and having to pay for the Yorkshire pudding.
We offer Thai, Chinese and our own recipes we have picked up from Asia. There is about 80 dishes in all, vegetarian and gluten free option are available.
Also offer a takeaway service, with 25% discount. We were one of the first pubs in the 1990's to offer a takeaway from a pub
There is an English selection of sandwiches, and light snacks through out the day, and also till 18.00pm we offer the Early Bird, which is 2 courses for £9.99. In the evening we will still offer a small selection of English food.

The Great Northern Warehouse is the former railway goods warehouse of the Great Northern Railway in Manchester city centre, England. It has been redeveloped as a car park and leisure complex. The building is located at the junction of Deansgate and Peter Street in the city centre. It was granted Grade II* listed building status on 3 October 1974.
The warehouse is a hugely impressive block, of blue brick below (and) red brick with blue brick dressings above. It was built to be fireproof with a steel frame, and built on a rectangular plan, 267 feet long by 217 feet wide and five storeys high, with 27 windows on the east and west sides and 17 windows on the north and south ends. All four sides have friezes lettered in white brick reading Great Northern Railway Company's Goods Warehouse. The warehouse was built above the Manchester and Salford Junction Canal, and a dock beneath was constructed to allow goods to be transferred to and from canal barges via shafts and a complex system of haulage using hydraulic power.[2] It is a unique survival of a three-way railway goods exchange station, serving the railway, canal and road networks of the Manchester region.
The development is owned by Capital & Regional and as of March 2013 comprises an AMC cinema, a casino, a bowling alley, bars, a Lifestyle Fitness gym, and a multi-storey car park operated by National Car Parks.

Google it on-line and you will generally find two types of review at other ends of the satisfaction spectrum, rarely in between, which is really unusual. You have to go there to find out why this is.
The elaborately decorated Canny Man's pub (formerly The Volunteer's Arms) on the corner of Canaan Lane
and the Bore Stane, an ancient monument adjacent to the former Parish Church. From the street it can be seen as a no packpacks, no creditcards, no cameras, no nutters kind of place. Inside its a jewel box of old typewriters, clocks etc. Quirky, unique.
The food is excellent, choice of spirits exceptional, including whiskey from the emerald isle. Champers is always available by the glass. Wine choice is extensive, draft beer at standard (high) Edinburgh prices. Also a nice beer garden when the weather is up to it.
So what is there not to like? This quote from www.edinburghpubguide.co.uk probably sums it up:
'I didn't find this place rude at all. In fact I found it quite the opposite. I was smartly dressed, polite, and got the same in return.
I get the impression the Canny Man's is deliberately alienating as customers the sort of people I and many others would cross the road to avoid.
I just wish the staff of the likes of the Cafe Royal and the Guildford Arms were a little 'ruder' to some of the neds who sadly drop in looking for pints of crap cider from time to time.
Canny Man's is one of the last remaining pubs to maintain customer standards which have sadly disappeared since the 1980s.
And the range of malts etc is outstanding'.
Dress and act your age not your shoe size and the staff will respect you in return. You will be guaranteed a unique session of food, drink and hospitality.

The Printworks is an entertainment venue, located on Withy Grove in Manchester city centre, England. It opened in 2000 and was launched with fireworks and a radio roadshow featuring many local and international acts, headlined by Lionel Richie.
It contains mostly bars and clubs, including a Hard Rock Cafe as well as a leisure centre and a 23-screen Odeon cinema, (formerly the Filmworks), incorporating an IMAX 3D screen. The Printworks was also home to the Hard Rock Casino in Manchester until it closed in 2006.
Until 1986 the Printworks was home to a printing press, owned at the time of its demise by Robert Maxwell. The site stood derelict until 1998, when work commenced on the new venue.
