Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RE4PFE - The 'tragic' demise of a once thriving Cheshire shopping centre
'We've seen it decline from what was a thriving 70s-style shopping precinct' - more at https://www.cheshire-live.co.uk/news/chester-cheshire-news/tragic-demise-once-thriving-cheshire-25324074
Walking around Weaver Square in Northwich, past its many vacant units, you'd struggle to imagine it was once a hive of retail activity. Years ago, hundreds of shoppers would visit daily, drawn by big names like Woolworths and Argos.
Fast-forward to the present day and it is scarcely recognisable. Half of the complex has been demolished, most of the units lie empty and the crowds have long disappeared elsewhere, as online shopping continues to eat away at the high street's fortunes.
Northwich's Cllr Sam Naylor said: It's been tragic. We've seen it decline from what was a thriving, 70s-style shopping precinct into a scene, not of dereliction, but something that smacks of a past era of post-war modern Britain.
Following the recent and sad closure of the much-loved Seafarer, many residents questioned what was happening with the long-planned redevelopment of Weaver Square, which lies mere feet away from the chippy.
Cheshire West and Chester Council acquired the lease of the site back in 2014, by which time many of the units already stood empty. The authority took it over after the previous owner of Weaver Square ceased trading in 2012.
Since then, there have been a number of ideas about what do with the site. But the shopping centre continued to lie mostly-dormant, despite it being partly-demolished in 2019 amid promises of regeneration.
Northwich would then be hit by misfortune after misfortune : the outdoor market was gutted by fire in early 2020
the Covid pandemic caused economic chaos across the world
the devastating flooding in 2021 left many businesses badly damaged
and the town's railway station collapsed in April last year.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NK28P0 - Ethiopian Airlines (commonly referred to as Ethiopian), formerly Ethiopian Air Lines (EAL), is the flag carrier of Ethiopia, and is wholly owned by the country's government. EAL was founded on 21 December 1945 and commenced operations on 8 April 1946, expanding to international flights in 1951. The firm became a share company in 1965 and changed its name from Ethiopian Air Lines to Ethiopian Airlines.
The airline has been a member of the International Air Transport Association since 1959 and of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) since 1968. Ethiopian is a Star Alliance member, having joined in December 2011. The company slogan is The New Spirit of Africa. Ethiopian's hub and headquarters are at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, from where it serves a network of 125 passenger destinations?20 of them domestic?and 44 freighter destinations. The airline has secondary hubs in Togo and Malawi. Ethiopian is Africa's largest airline in terms of passengers carried, destinations served, fleet size, and revenue. Ethiopian is also the world's fourth-largest airline by the number of countries served.
A CNN investigation alleged that Ethiopian Airlines Cargo airplanes transported weapons to airports in Eritrea during the Tigray War. The airline billed Ethiopia's Ministry of Defence at least six times in November 2020. The article's reporter claimed that using civil aircraft to smuggle military weapons violates international aviation law

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M108AP - In London, the Greyfriars was a Conventual Franciscan friary that existed from 1225 to 1538 on a site at the North-West of the City of London by Newgate in the parish of St Nicholas in the Shambles. It was the second Franciscan religious house to be founded in the country. The establishment included a conventual church that was one of the largest in London
a studium or regional university
and an extensive library of logical and theological texts. It was an important intellectual centre in the early fourteenth century, rivalled only by Oxford University in status. Members of the community at that time included William of Ockham, Walter Chatton and Adam Wodeham. It flourished in the fourteenth and fifteenth century but was dissolved in 1538 at the instigation of Henry VIII as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Christ's Hospital was founded in the old conventual buildings, and the church was rebuilt completely by Sir Christopher Wren as Christ Church Greyfriars after the original church was almost completely destroyed in the Great Fire of London of 1666. The building now standing on the site, designed by Arup Group Limited, is currently occupied by Merrill Lynch.
It was named after the friars' practice of wearing grey habits.

The company was founded by Hidalgo Moya, an American-Spanish engineer who lived in England. After first building the Moya typewriter, he set up the Imperial Typewriter Company in Leicester in 1911 with local businessmen John Gordon Chattaway, William Arthur Evans and Joseph Wallis Goddard. It stopped manufacturing typewriters when electric models and then word processors and personal computers became popular, causing typewriter sales to fall.
The company was acquired by Litton Industries in 1966, and gradually introduced Royal Typewriter Company models largely assembled from parts shipped from Hartford, Connecticut, United States. In May 1974, Asian workers at the Imperial Typewriter Company in Leicester went on strike over unequal bonus payments and discrimination in promotion. The shop stewards committee and Transport & General Workers Union branch refused their support, but the strikers stayed on strike for almost 14 weeks. The manufacture of typewriters ceased at Leicester and Hull in 1975

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AERPFP - Tawny Gray
Toin Adams, born in Kitwe, Zambia, is a sculptor working in steel, acrylic, fibreglass and other media. She spent her early childhood in eastern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), and late teen years, in South Africa, where she attended the National School of the Arts, Johannesburg. In the late 80's she moved to England, where she began her career in sculpting.
Her two most well known works to date are Birmingham's largest sculpture: the 12 m high, The Green Man 2002 and the 10m high hanging sculpture The Deluge 2010 at Zellig, a 10 metres (33 ft) high hanging sculpture of falling bodies, both commissioned by the Custard Factory in Digbeth, Birmingham. I like making large scale sculpture, playing with diverse materials and figuring out how to make them...not fall over...
Adams is part of The Imaginary Beings Art Collective, a group of artists that work together to create collaborative art projects. Through this collective she has put together several art events around the world including The End of a World and Transcendence and Transformation

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P8KF0C - Doncaster is a large town in South Yorkshire, England. Together with its surrounding suburbs and settlements, the town forms part of the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, which had a mid-2017 est. population of 308,900. The town itself has a population of 109,805 The Doncaster Urban Area had a population of 158,141 in 2011 and includes Doncaster and neighbouring small villages. Part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974, Doncaster is about 17 miles (30 km) north-east of Sheffield, with which it is served by an international airport, Doncaster Sheffield Airport in Finningley. Under the Local Government Act 1972, Doncaster was incorporated into a newly created metropolitan borough in 1974, itself incorporated with other nearby boroughs in the 1974 creation of the metropolitan county of South Yorkshire.
Doncaster is represented in the House of Commons by three MPs

At a European level, Doncaster is part of the Yorkshire and the Humber constituency and is represented by six MEPs.
Doncaster is one of only twelve UK boroughs to have a directly-elected mayor, a position currently held by Labour's Ros Jones.
In September 2014, UKIP held its annual party conference at Doncaster Racecourse. UKIP party leader Nigel Farage claimed that by holding the conference in Doncaster, UKIP were now parking our tanks on the Labour Party's lawn referring to Labour leader Ed Miliband's Doncaster North constituency. Shortly afterwards in the seat, at the 2015 general election, UKIP won 8,928 votes to Labour's 20,708. In the 2016 EU Referendum, however, Doncaster voted 69% to leave the European Union

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P4HWHC - Last month's major timetable change wasn't just about rescheduling trains, but was designed to deliver more services between Leeds and Manchester, Manchester and Liverpool, Newcastle and Leeds, Lincoln and Sheffield, and so on and so on. All these service improvements need more trains ? and those trains haven't arrived yet. New trains are being built, and the inevitable delays to their arrival have yet to be announced. But delays to new trains in London and Scotland are causing problems in the North.
Second hand trains from Bristol and Edinburgh can now been seen at work in Yorkshire, but not nearly as many as there should be. And delays to electrification in London means diesels haven't been released to Bristol, which in turn has kept Yorkshire bound trains in the South West. Brand new electric trains in Scotland have unsafe curved windows in their driving cabs, so haven't entered service, which means Scotland's diesels haven't headed south of the border.
This new timetable should have seen even more changes, but many service improvements have been held back until December. Even without the introduction of these more frequent schedules, there is a big shortage of trains, resulting in the trains that are running having fewer coaches than demand requires. Passengers are being left on platforms.
The other company which needs to deliver on promises is Network Rail ? not that it has promised much in the North.
Leeds and Manchester are booming rail hubs. They have seen massive increases in passenger numbers, yet there has been little (Manchester) or no (Leeds) investment in the railway infrastructure. Widespread electrification was promised and then unpromised. It hasn't been cancelled, but it won't happen. The short lengths of railway that are being electrified have been massively delayed.
The Ordsall Curve in Manchester has created more demand without creating any new capacity. Manchester Victoria is full, and yet more trains are running through it.Result is chaos

The north side of the bridge is Tower Hill, and the south side of the bridge comes down into Bermondsey, robbie, an area in Southwark. It is far more visible than London Bridge, which people often mistake it for. If large boats need to sail under Tower Bridge, the two halves of the bridge lift up to let it under. Many tourists go to London to see the Tower Bridge.
When it was first built, Tower Bridge was the bridge. Bascule is the French word for a see-saw. The bascules are the surfaces raised to allow tall ships to pass through: this happens about 900 times per year. The bridge's deck can be raised to 83deg from the horizontal. Tower Bridge is one of London's most famous sights.
The City of London Corporation held a competition for the design in 1876. Over 50 designs were entered, and in 1884 Horace Jones and John Wolfe Barry's design was chosen.
Workers began to build the Tower Bridge in April 1886 and the bridge was opened in 30 June 1894.
In June 2012, the bridge was highlighted on the route of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee Pageant on the Thames

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG3948 - Built in 1971, it was a celebrated piece of Brutalist architecture at its opening, but quickly fell out of favour. Consisting of an 11-storey office tower, and an In-Shops indoor market on the ground and first floors. Full of tacky clothes shops, greasy spoon cafes, amusement arcades and stalls where you can get a new drive belt for your vacuum cleaner. You get the picture.
Amazingly it is part of a grand scheme to gut the building completely, extend the office tower to a whopping 32-storeys, add a smaller 16-storey one for good measure and repackage it as a state of the art multi-use complex. This was all reported in the Evening Times in 2009, but sadly you can still buy a processed burger in the Savoy Centre.

While minding my own business munching through my lunchtime Peking duck wrap, I was reminded of the turning of the season. A half brown, half green leaf landed on the bench next to me and a cool breeze made me zip up my jacket. Autumn (or you may call it fall) has arrived.
This track Autumn Shade comes from the Australian alternative rock band The Vines 2002 album 'Highly Evolved'. It was produced by Rob Schnapf, Highly Evolved was an immensely popular debut, part of a trend towards garage rock revival bands known as much for the relentless hype from the UK music press as for their music
The Vines were frequently compared to Nirvana. The debut single, 'Highly Evolved', was chosen as Single of the Week by influential British music magazine New Musical Express. They also voted it the 2nd best album of the year in 2002.
Originally named Rishikesh and formed 1994 in Sydney, they play a musical hybrid of 1960s garage rock and 1990s alternative music.
Since 2006 their line-up has consisted of vocalist and lead guitarist Craig Nicholls, rhythm guitarist Ryan Griffiths, bass guitarist Brad Heald, and drummer Hamish Rosser.
Upon the release of their debut album, The Vines were hailed as \u201cthe second coming of Nirvana' by the British press
their grungy sound was considered reminiscent of the Seattle scene circa \u201991, and Nicholls' erratic on-stage behavior and raw vocals drew comparisons between him and Kurt Cobain. Highly Evolved became a huge success and their accompanying live shows in the early years were praised as 'electrifying' and 'sensational'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HDR7 - The Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Truro is an Anglican cathedral located in the city of Truro, Cornwall, in the United Kingdom. It was built in the Gothic Revival architectural style fashionable during much of the nineteenth century, and is one of only three cathedrals in the United Kingdom with three spires.
The See (or Diocese) of Truro was established in 1876, and the first bishop, Edward White Benson, was consecrated in 1877. Truro was the first cathedral to be built on a new site in England since Salisbury Cathedral in 1220.
A stained glass window depicting the founding of the cathedral.
Construction began in 1880 on the site of the sixteenth century parish church of St Mary the Virgin to a design by the leading Gothic Revival architect John Loughborough Pearson. St Mary's, a building in the Perpendicular style with a spire 128 feet tall was demolished in October 1880, leaving only the early sixteenth-century south aisle, which was retained to serve as the parish church. From 1880 until 1887 a temporary wooden cathedral was built on an adjacent site. This accommodated fewer than 400 people and was extremely hot in summer and cold in winter. It was in this building that the Bishop introduced the new evening service of Nine Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve, 1880.
Pearson's design combines the Early English style with certain French characteristics, chiefly spires and rose windows. Truro's resemblance to Lincoln Cathedral is not coincidental: Pearson had been appointed as Lincoln's Cathedral architect and the first Bishop of Truro, Edward Benson, had previously been Canon Chancellor at Lincoln. The central tower and spire stands 250 feet (76 m) tall, while the western towers reach to 200 feet (61 m). Four kinds of stone were used: Mabe granite for the exterior, and St Stephen's granite for the interior, with dressings and shafts of Bath and Polyphant stone. The spires and turret roofs are of stone, except for a copper spire over the bell tower

Victorians and the like used to love lots of rubber stamps just like this. You see it less so now most corrospondence is email or automated spam. Even cheques were not really cashed until several stout stamps had been embossed on them. These colonial practices still occur in India (for the moment), as anyone who has ever changed money in a bank will testify.
