This striking sculpture of the young Queen Victoria riding side-saddle was commissioned to match the one of Prince Albert already completed by Thornycroft and unveiled in 1866. The Queen's hat is generously plumed, and, appropriately for this position outside St George's Hall, she bears the St. George's riband as a sash across her breast. The fine detail of the statue is most easily seen from below in the embroidered crown and scrolling, as well as the fringe, of the ceremonial saddle-blanket. In a description from the Art Journal, the horse is seen as full of impatient action, which tells on the sway of the figure
an effect difficult to express well in sculpture (qtd. in Cavanagh 95). The Queen holds what looks like a small sceptre, but is actually the handle of a riding crop, the rest of which has been lost. The drape of her voluminous skirt can be seen in the right-hand profile.
According to Bob Speel, this was the piece that made [Thomas Thornycroft's] name. Compare it with his equestrian statuette of the Queen from 1853.

Chris Harman (8 November 1942 ? 7 November 2009) was a British journalist and political activist, and a member of the Central Committee of the Socialist Workers Party. He was an editor of International Socialism and Socialist Worker.
Born Christopher John Harman into a working-class family, he attended Leeds University (where he joined the Socialist Review Group in 1961) and the London School of Economics (LSE) where he began (but did not complete) a doctorate under the supervision of Ralph Miliband. He was instrumental in publishing the magazine of the LSE Socialist Society, The Agitator, and was a leading member of the International Socialists (as the SRG had become) by 1968. He was involved in the Vietnam Solidarity Campaign
In 2005 Chris Harman was writing about how the 30-year project to publish the collected works of Marx and Engels was done. It is 50 volumes long and he was reviewing Vol 50, having read the previous 49 one by one as they had appeared. Of course, he had read them all. Harman, who has died aged 66 in Cairo, Egypt, following a cardiac arrest, was the kind of Marxist who is never satisfied with second-hand summaries. To get a handle on why he was like this, we have to go back to the 1950s when Marxism was largely in the hands of communists and, as Orwell's Animal Farm shows, the link between Marx's ideas and the communist tyrannies was nothing more than a distorted rhetoric

Patrick Joseph Caulfield was born on 29 January 1936 at 17 All Saints Road, Acton, west London. During the second world war Caulfield's family returned to Bolton in 1945
Inspired by the 1952 film Moulin Rouge about the artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, he spent his free time attending evening classes at Harrow School of Art (now part of the University of Westminster)
Patrick Caulfield studied at Chelsea School of Art from 1956 to 1960, and during this time he won two prizes which funded a trip he made to Greece and Crete upon graduation. The visit to the island proved important, with Caulfield finding inspiration in the Minoan frescoes and the bright, hard colours on Crete. One of his greatest friends was the abstract painter John Hoyland, whom he first met at the Young Contemporaries exhibition in 1959. Progressing to the Royal College of Art from 1960 to 1963, his contemporaries included David Hockney and Allen Jones. He taught at Chelsea School of Art from 1963?71. In 1964, he exhibited at the New Generation show at London's Whitechapel Gallery, which resulted in him being associated with the pop art movement. This was a label Caulfield was opposed to throughout his career, seeing himself rather as a 'formal' artist
From the mid-1970s he incorporated more detailed, realistic elements into his work
After Lunch (1975) is an early example. Still-life: Autumn Fashion (1978) contains a variety of styles ? some objects have heavy black outlines and flat colour, but a bowl of oysters is depicted more realistically and other areas are executed with looser brushwork. Caulfield later returned to his earlier, more stripped-down style of painting

History
The aftermath of the First World War saw an unprecedented wave of public commemoration with tens of thousands of memorials erected across the country, both as a result of the huge impact the loss of three quarters of a million British lives had on communities and the official policy of not repatriating the dead, which meant that the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss.
One such memorial was raised in Marple as permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War. Marple War Memorial Committee was convened on 17 February 1919, and discussed a number of schemes to commemorate the war: scholarships, a hospital, a public park, swimming baths, the endowment of lectures and a public hall. These were reduced in subsequent meetings to a hospital, scholarships and the endowment of preachers. Scholarships and a hospital were found to be too expensive, and a donation of land allowed the scheme to be revised to comprise a memorial park.
The park was originally to be named the Carver-Barlow Park, after the donors of the land, but this was later changed to the War Memorial Park. Proposals were added to include a memorial in the park, and funds were raised through public subscription, dances and whist drives for the memorial and the layout of the park. The park was gifted to the Urban District Council, on the proviso that there was no provision for football or cricket

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JP0KA7 - John Charles Ryle (10 May 1816 ? 10 June 1900) was an English evangelical Anglican bishop. He was the first Anglican bishop of Liverpool.
He was the eldest son of John Ryle, private banker, of Park House, Macclesfield, M.P. for Macclesfield 1833?7, and Susanna, daughter of Charles Hurt of Wirksworth, Derbyshire. He was born at Macclesfield on 10 May 1816.
He was educated at Eton and the University of Oxford, where his career was unusually distinguished. He was Fell exhibitioner at Christ Church, from which foundation he matriculated on 15 May 1834. He was Craven scholar in 1836, graduated B.A. in 1838, having been placed in the first-class in liter?? humaniores in the preceding year, and proceeded M.A. in 1871. He was created D.D. by diploma on 4 May 1880.
Ryle left the university with the intention of standing for parliament on the first opportunity, but was unable to do so because of his father's bankruptcy. He took holy orders (1841?42) and became curate at Exbury, Hampshire. In 1843, he was preferred to the rectory of St Thomas, Winchester, which he exchanged in the following year for that of Helmingham, Suffolk. The latter living he retained until 1861, when he resigned it for the vicarage of Stradbroke in the same county. The restoration of Stradbroke church was due to his initiative. In 1869, he was made rural dean of Hoxne, and in 1872 honorary canon of Norwich. He was select preacher at Cambridge in 1873 and the following year, and at Oxford from 1874 to 1876, and in 1879 and the following year. In 1880, he was designated dean of Salisbury, and at once, 19 April, advanced to the newly created see of Liverpool, which he ably administered until his death at Lowestoft on 10 June 1900. He is buried at All Saints Church, Childwall, Liverpool

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ABJGED - John Leonard Wilson (23 November 1897 ? 22 July 1970) was an Anglican bishop. He was Bishop of Singapore from 1941 to 1949 during the time of Japanese occupation and subsequently Dean of Manchester and Bishop of Birmingham.
After serving as Dean of Hong Kong, Wilson became Bishop of Singapore in 1941.
At the time of the fall of Singapore in February 1942, Wilson, assisted by the Reverend Reginald Keith Sorby Adams of Saint Andrew's School, Singapore and John Hayter, ministered unstintingly to the people of Singapore. Subsequently, they were able to continue their ministry for a year, thanks mainly to the help of a Christian Japanese officer Andrew Ogawa. However the growing popularity of the cathedral and the use of English was regarded by the Japanese authorities as a threat and in 1943 they were interned in Changi prison.
From 1949 to 1953, Wilson was Dean of Manchester and, from 1953, to 1969 Bishop of Birmingham in succession to the controversial Ernest William Barnes. In his time as a bishop, Wilson was frequently called on to give a Christian perspective on issues of peace and war, his wartime experiences giving him a moral platform from which to do so. He was an early supporter of the ordination of women. He was opposed to the death penalty and for the reform of the law on homosexual acts

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ABJGET - St Philip's was designed by Thomas Archer and constructed between 1711 and 1715. The tower was complete by 1725, and the urns on the parapet were added in 1756. Archer had visited Rome and his design, in the Baroque style, is influenced by the churches of Borromini, being rather more Italianate than churches by Christopher Wren. The rectangular hall church interior has aisles separated from the nave by fluted pillars of classical form with Tuscan capitals supporting an arcade surmounted by a heavily projecting cornice. Wooden galleries are stretched between the pillars in a manner typical of English Baroque churches.
Externally, the tall windows are interspaced by pilasters in low relief, supporting a balustrade at roof level with an urn rising above each pilaster. The western end is marked by a single tower which rises in stages and is surmounted by a lead-covered dome and a delicate lantern. The building is of brick and is faced with stone quarried on Archer's estate at Umberslade.
The chancel, featuring stained glass by Edward Burne-Jones
The original shallow eastern apse was extended in 1884?88 by J. A. Chatwin into a much larger chancel, articulated by strongly projecting Corinthian columns. This bold design is made richer by the marbled surfaces of the columns and pilasters, the gilding of capitals and cornice and the ornately coffered ceiling. Chatwin also refaced the exterior of the building because the stone from the original quarry was very soft. The tower was refaced in 1958-59.
Edward Burne-Jones, who was born in nearby Bennett's Hill and baptised in the church, added to the enhancement of St Philips by the donation of several windows, of which three are at the eastern end. The west window, also by Burne-Jones, was dedicated in memory of Henry Bowlby in 1897.
Six of the monuments have heritage listings, including one commemorating two men who died during the construction of Birmingham Town Hall and a memorial to the victims of the Brum pub bombing

Sited in the centre of O'Connell Street, the city's main thoroughfare, it is one of Ireland's most famous buildings, not least because it served as the headquarters of the leaders of the Easter Rising. It was the last of the great Georgian public buildings erected in the capital.
The foundation-stone of the building, which was designed by Francis Johnston, was laid by the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Charles Whitworth, 1st Earl Whitworth, on 12 August 1814. The front, which extends 67.1 metres (220 ft), has an Ionic portico (24.4 metres (80 ft) wide), of six fluted Ionic columns, 137.16 centimetres (54 inches) in diameter. The frieze of the entablature is highly enriched, and in the tympanum of the pediment were the royal arms until removed following restoration in the 1920s. During the Easter Rising of 1916, the GPO served as the headquarters of the uprising's leaders. It was from outside this building on the 24th of April 1916, that Patrick Pearse read out the Proclamation of the Irish Republic. The building was destroyed by fire in the course of the rebellion, save for the granite facade, and not rebuilt until 1929, by the Irish Free State government

The GPO was built in 1814 under the direction of architect Mr. Francis Johnston and was the last of the great Georgian public buildings erected in the capital.

So, after campaigning for many years, the 72-year-old Shetlander, who went to sea at 15, was delighted to see the Aberdeen Fishing Memorial being unveiled yesterday.
Two bronze figures ? a fisherman hauling a net brimful of fish and a woman carrying a laden basket ? now look down on the city's harbour.
For Rab, it's recognition that's disgracefully long overdue to the brave men and women who made such a huge contribution to life and prosperity on Scotland's shores.

He said: There's a generation in Aberdeen who don't even know what a trawler looks like. Aberdeen didn't bother to save one for posterity.
For every man at sea, he employed seven ashore ? net menders, ice factory workers, fishmarket porters, lorry drivers, welders, platers, engineers? you name it.
And women were very important. The wives supported the trawlermen in so far as the father was never there, he was always at sea.
They were amazing lassies. You'd see them during the day in the harbourside fish-houses. Then at night we'd go up town to the dance halls and you wouldn't recognise them.
Often you'd find a trawlerman married to a fishwoman, as I am myself. My wife Wilma was a fish filleter for 40 years on and off in Aberdeen and Peterhead.

Rab, who retired in Boddam, near Peterhead, launched an online petition for a memorial.
It was backed by Labour MSP Lewis Macdonald. George Adam, the city's lord provost at the time, also took up the fight and support soon came from the city council.
Funding was provided from the city's Common Good Fund and there was backing from the Fishermen's Mission.

More than 100 artists are taking part in the Look Again Festival, which takes advantage of vacant or underused areas of the city and runs until June 16.
Among the highlights of this year's event, the fifth since it was launched, include a Colosseum-inspired colourful installation at the Castlegate and a virtual reality experience in Marischal Quad.
Another major attraction is The Bill Gibb Line, presented by Aberdeen-based writer Shane Strachan.
Gibb was the son of an Aberdeenshire farmer who took the fashion world by storm, with Elizabeth Taylor, Bianca Jagger, and Sandie Shaw wearing his designs in the 1970s.
Look Again co-director Sally Reaper said: In this, our fifth year, Look Again lasts longer and extends further than ever before.
With amazing participation from well over 100 artists, designers, makers, writers and performers, we really feel we are showing what a great creative community we have right here in the north-east.
We are so pleased to be highlighting this wealth of talent.
Our 2019 programme is bold and ambitious, outward-looking and connected, and we are delighted at the collaborations and partnerships that have emerged and continue to grow through Look Again.
An extensive series of talks, workshops and events will also give opportunities to learn more about the work of the participating artists and the creative industries in the north-east.
Launched in 2015, Look Again is now part of Gray's School of Art at Robert Gordon University (RGU) and also holds events throughout the year.
Libby Curtis, head of the art school, said: Look Again is fully committed to supporting the growth and development of Aberdeen's incredible creative industry ? support it critically needs in order to maintain its robust cultural offering but also to retain the fantastic artistic talent we have here in the north-east.

Eleven regions ? Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee, Perth, Fife, Stirling, Ayrshire, Shetland, Orkney and Inverness ? are represented along with a general Scotland design for outlets outwith the selected regions.
Each of the fonts, created by design agency D8, features landmarks and references from the region it represents, such as Edinburgh's Calton Hill, the Finnieston Crane in Glasgow, Aberdeen's Dunnottar Castle, Deep Sea World in Fife, Orkney's Viking longship, shinty in Inverness and Perth's Tay Bridge.
Alan Hay, on-trade sales director at Tennent's, said 250 fonts of each design will be rolled out this summer.
Supporting our customers will always be our priority, and following the success of our customisable founts, we are now rolling out fount designs for specific regions of Scotland, he said.
No other brand knows the Scottish on-trade like we do and we're sure the cultural references on each fount will create a real talking point amongst pub-goers

We want our drinkers to have a quality experience when enjoying a pint of Tennent's, and that starts with how our fount looks on the bar.
The roll out of the limited edition fonts comes after Tennent's extended its partnership with Scottish Rugby in a seven-figure deal.
Under the new agreement, Tennent's will continue its relationship with the Scotland national team and the country's two professional sides: Edinburgh and Glasgow Warriors, alongside the additional title sponsorship of the Scottish domestic leagues.
The brewer will additionally take on the naming rights of the Premiership and National leagues, with the newly-formed Scottish Championship to follow in 2019/2020.

After a number of unsuccessful proposals, the majority of the building was leased to Aberdeen City Council to be restored and refurbished as office accommodation. The extensive renovation was completed on schedule and significantly under budget and the building opened to the public in June 2011. The university has retained the Mitchell Hall and a number of other significant parts of the building.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GJBPM8 - The building was constructed between 1896 and 1903 as the head office of the Royal Insurance Company. The design was the result of a competition won by James F. Doyle in 1895. The assessor for the competition was Norman Shaw, who was retained as an advisory architect for the project, but it is uncertain what part he played in it. The building is constructed around a steel frame and is the earliest example of this type of construction in the United Kingdom. It ceased to be used by the late 1980s, and its condition deteriorated so much that it was placed on the Buildings at Risk Register of English Heritage.
In 2013 its freehold was bought by Liverpool City Council, and it was converted it into a hotel. It opened as the Aloft Liverpool Hotel on 29 October 2014.
Constructed around a steel frame, the building is in Portland stone, with a granite basement and ground floor. Its architecture is described as sumptious Neo-Baroque on the grandest scale. The building is in four storeys with a basement and an attic. Its long front on North John Street has eleven bays, with three bays on Dale Street. The ground floor and basement are rusticated. The windows are three-light sash windows with round heads. Those on the first floor have Gibbs surrounds and iron balconies. In the second and third floors the windows are recessed behind a Doric colonnade and entablature. In the attic are dormers. Some of these have architraves, keystones, and either segmental or triangular pediments
the others are flat-topped and contain casement windows. The entrance is on the second bay from the left in North John Street. The doorway has Doric columns and is round-headed. The first floor contains a round-headed window surrounded by a portico with a broken segmental pediment containing carved figures. Above this bay rises a three-stage campanile bearing an octagonal cupola with a gilded dome. On the Dale Street fa??ade is a Venetian window. The second floor contains a frieze.

For anyone who has not experienced the many pleasures of Edinburgh city, Calton Hill is just to the east of the New Town in what North americans might call 'downtown'. There are several iconic monuments and buildings on the hill. The National Monument, Nelson's Monument, the Dugald Stewart Monument, the New Parliament House (the Royal High School), the Robert Burns Monument, the Political Martyrs' Monument and the Edinburgh City Observatory. Originally the Royal High School was earmarked for the site of the future Scottish Assembly. The new modern building is now at the foot of the hill at Holyrood.
The hill was owned by hill from Lord Balmerino until 1724 and what a view he must have had!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy TRN0YP - An Aberdeen street art festival has been given a national award following a public poll.
Over four days in April, international artists gathered to brighten up the city by creating large public murals for Nuart.
Business organisation Aberdeen Inspired played a large role in developing the festival, and has now been commended at the 2017 National Business Improvement District (BID) Awards for this.
Following an online vote by members of the public and deliberation by an expert panel, it was awarded the Place Management award over five other BIDs from across the UK.
The win marks the fourth award Nuart Aberdeen has won, including helping the city toward its European BID of the Year victory in July.
Adrian Watson, chief executive of Aberdeen Inspired, said: We're absolutely delighted that Nuart Aberdeen has been recognised with another national award against strong competition from across the UK.
The festival was very successful and sparked a huge amount of interest in the city with large crowds coming to the centre to see the street art throughout the year. It originally opened in 1750 as the result of a bequest by Robert Gordon, an Aberdeen merchant who made his fortune from trading with Baltic ports, and was known at foundation as Robert Gordon's Hospital. This was 19 years after Gordon had died and left his estate in a 'Deed of Mortification' to fund the foundation of the Hospital. The fine William Adam-designed building was in fact completed in 1732, but lay empty until 1745 until Gordon's foundation had sufficient funds to complete the interior. During the Jacobite rising, in 1746 the buildings were commandeered by Hanoverian troops and named Fort Cumberland.
