Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RTJRXH - Peter Seamus O'Toole (2 August 1932 14 December 2013) was an English stage and film actor. He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and began working in the theatre, gaining recognition as a Shakespearean actor at the Bristol Old Vic and with the English Stage Company. In 1959 he made his West End debut in The Long and the Short and the Tall, and played the title role in Hamlet in the National Theatre's first production in 1963. Excelling on the London stage, O'Toole was known for his hellraiser lifestyle off it.
Making his film debut in 1959, O'Toole achieved international recognition playing T. E. Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia (1962) for which he received his first nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor. He was nominated for this award another seven times for playing King Henry II in both Becket (1964) and The Lion in Winter (1968), Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1969), The Ruling Class (1972), The Stunt Man (1980), My Favorite Year (1982), and Venus (2006) and holds the record for the most Oscar nominations for acting without a win (tied with Glenn Close). In 2002, he was awarded the Academy Honorary Award for his career achievements
St Paul's Church is a Church of England parish church located in Bedford Street, Covent Garden, central London. It was designed by Inigo Jones as part of a commission for the 4th Earl of Bedford in 1631 to create houses and buildings fit for the habitations of Gentlemen and men of ability.

Designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the Gothic Revival style, it takes the form of an ornate canopy or pavilion 176 feet (54 m) tall, in the style of a Gothic ciborium over the high altar of a church, sheltering a statue of the prince facing south. It took over ten years to complete, the £120,000 cost (the equivalent of about £10,000,000 in 2010) met by public subscription.
The memorial was opened in July 1872 by Queen Victoria, with the statue of Albert ceremonially seated in 1876. It has been Grade I listed since 1970.

Situated halfway between Liverpool's Anglican cathedral and Metropolitan catholic cathedral, this is a cathedral' among pubs. It was rebuilt in 1898-1900 to designs by Walter Thomas for Liverpool brewer, Robert Cain. Thomas and Cains went on to build the other prodigy pub of central Liverpool, the Vines. Craftsmen and artists from the then University Department of Architecture & Applied Art worked on it under the superintendence of G. Hall Neale and Arthur Stratton.
The exterior is a freely-treated Tudor style designed to resemble a Scottish castle with all sorts of odd details including stepped gables

balustraded parapet, oriel windows and a stone sculpture of musicians and musical instruments in low relief and a marble façade. One of the most stunning features are the entrance gates to Hope Street
they are an amazing display of Art Nouveau wrought iron and copper gates by H. Bloomfield Bare which carry the motto and arms of the original Robert Cain brewery. The interior, which is what everyone comes to experience, has an unusual, complex plan.

Beyond the grand gates is a large northern drinking lobby, for stand-up drinking, with a mosaic floor in front of a bar counter also encrusted with mosaic and a wooden top. There are a number of heavily carved and polished mahogany partitions, Corinthian pilasters and columns, and a wonderful intricate plasterwork high ceiling with decorative cornice. To the left is the former off sales that was accessed by a door on the left of the lobby and it has a mosaic floor and tiled walls of cream and green topped with brown strips. There is another mosaic bar front, the original bar back has stained and leaded and decorative stained glass panels, and partitions have deep etched and frosted panels.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJ2997 - Bacharach (pronunciation (help·info), also known as Bacharach am Rhein) is a town in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde of Rhein-Nahe, whose seat is in Bingen am Rhein, although that town is not within its bounds.
The original name Baccaracus suggests a Celtic origin. Above the town stands Stahleck Castle (Burg Stahleck), now a youth hostel.
Geography
Location
The town lies in the Rhine Gorge, 48 km south of Koblenz.
Constituent communities
Bacharach is divided into several Ortsteile. The outlying centre of Steeg lies in the Steeg Valley (Steeger Tal) off to the side, away from the Rhine. This glen lies between Medenscheid and Neurath to the south and Henschhausen to the north on the heights.
History
In the early 11th century, Bacharach had its first documentary mention. It may have been that as early as the 7th century, the kingly domain passed into Archbishop of Cologne Kunibert's ownership
pointing to this is a Kunibertskapelle (chapel) on the spot where now stands the Wernerkapelle. The Vögte of the Cologne estate were the Elector of the Palatinate, who over time pushed back Cologne's influence.
Caring for and maintaining Bacharach's building monuments, spurred on in the early 20th century by the Rhenish Association for Monument Care and Landscape Preservation (Rheinischer Verein für Denkmalpflege und Landschaftsschutz) which took on the then highly endangered town wall and Stahleck Castle ruin jobs, and the great dedication of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate to the Wernerkapelle have seen to it that Bacharach is still a jewel of the Rheinromantik and a multifaceted documentary site of mediaeval architecture on the Middle Rhine. The Wernerkapelle ruin is under monumental protection and before it a plaque has been placed recalling the inhuman crimes against Jewish residents and also containing a quotation from a prayer by Pope John XXIII for a change in Christians' thinking in their relationship

In the Annals of the Sailors' Home, printed in the Home's annual report for the year 1935, against the year 1907 was the following entry: November - Police Officer Locke killed through front gate falling upon him.
Early on the morning of Sunday 24 November, nearly an hour after midnight, Police constable number 324A, Brownlow Locke, of the Liverpool City Constabulary, met his death in a very strange and unexpected manner.
1951: The Gates Move to Their New Home in Sandwell
As part of the repair to War Damage following the Liverpool Blitz it was decided to remove the gates. On 25 March 1948 W & T Avery who had swallowed-up Pooley's and Sons were offered the gates by the Sailors' Home Committee. On 18 May 1949 Avery's made an offer of 50 guineas for the gates, which was accepted on 3 May. 1951.
The home was demolished between 1974-1975. After refurbishment at Barr & Grosvenor Ltd's foundry Wolverhampton, the gates were returned to the Liverpool One shopping development

12-pane sash windows: on second floor, single bowed 16-pane
sash window. Moulded and modillioned eaves cornice, returned
at both ends.
INTERIOR: ground floor shop partly lined with reset C17
panelling, some carved. Staircase with moulded close string,
turned balusters, square newels with attached half balusters
and ramped handrail rises from ground to second floor. First
floor landing: reglazed small-pane sash window in round-arched
moulded surround
moulded round arch on moulded imposts leads
to front rooms. Beams in front rooms decorated with plaster
fruit and floral trails. A number of C17 panelled doors
survive, some on butterfly hinges.

The Appleton Thorn Village Hall near Warrington has been named the best in the country in CAMRA's Club of the Year 2019 awards, one of the most respected and well-known club awards in the UK.
This is the second time and almost 10 years to the date that the former school has won the accolade for its ever-changing range of seven beers from regional and micro-breweries. The attractive sandstone building is the hub of the community, housing a comfortable bar area, small pool room, garden area and bowling green. Home cooked food is served at Sunday lunchtime and the function room hosts quizzes, live music and an annual beer festival in October. The recent addition of a gin bar has proved popular with the club's members.
Keith Spencer, Club of the Year organiser said: This club is the very hub of the community, from hosting pre-school events to yoga, dance, Guides and rehearsals for the Vale Royal String Orchestra! It is a very deserving winning of this year's Club of the Year competition and a shining example of the intrinsic role that clubs can play in their local areas.

The hall was designed by James Gibbs and built in 1750 for Thomas Patten, Esq. It became known as Bank Hall, and originally stood in open fields on the edge of the town, surrounded by extensive landscaped gardens and with nothing to obscure the views south to the River Mersey and the Cheshire countryside beyond.
It remained like this until early in the 19th century when, because of the growth of the town and its industries, a perimeter wall was built around the estate to provide some privacy.
The main hall
Its front south facade has nine bays. The centre area has four large three-quarter attached composite columns with a pediment bearing the arms of the Patten family. In the middle there is also an open two-arm staircase, with a fine wrought iron balustrade, leading up to the main entrance, which is flanked by a pair of arched windows with the typical Gibbs surround.
The pediments of the windows on the main floor in the side sections have alternating triangular and elliptical heads. The construction year, 1750, is shown on the rainwater-heads on the sides of the building.
The north side of the hall is completely of brick and altogether simpler.
As more traffic started to use Sankey Street, the Patten family built a high brick wall in front of the building to give them privacy. But when the council bought Bank Hall in 1870 and turned it into Warrington's new town hall, local people started to complain that they were paying rates which helped to look after the building but they couldn't even see it!
So Frederick Monks, one of the town's earliest councillors, came up with an idea. As a local ironmaster, he could give the town hall a fitting entrance
As a young man, Monks was an apprentice of P P Carpenter of Cairo Street. He worked his way up and then helped to create Monks Hall and Company, which became one of the country's leading manufacturers of iron and steel. Through his business, he heard about a magnificent pair of iron gate

This one is notorious for being the pub where the serial killer Dennis Nilson picked up several of his rent boy victims. He was found guilty of murder in 1983.

Additionally, it houses the penthouse condominium residence of businessman, real estate developer, and former U.S. president Donald Trump, who developed the building and named it after himself. Several members of the Trump family also live, or have resided, in the building. The tower stands on a plot where the flagship store of department-store chain Bonwit Teller was formerly located.
Der Scutt of Poor, Swanke, Hayden & Connell designed Trump Tower, and Trump and the Equitable Life Assurance Company (now the AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company) developed it. Although it is in one of Midtown Manhattan's special zoning districts, the tower was approved because it was to be built as a mixed-use development. Trump was permitted to add more stories to the tower in return for additional retail space and for providing privately owned public space on the ground floor, the lower level, and two outdoor terraces. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXKB3 - National Museums Scotland was formed by Act of Parliament in 1985 , amalgamating the former National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland and The Royal Scottish Museum. The National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh, Scotland, was formed in 2006 with the merger of the new Museum of Scotland, with collections relating to Scottish antiquities, culture and history, and the adjacent Royal Museum (so renamed in 1995), with collections covering science and technology, natural history, and world cultures.
The two connected buildings stand beside each other on Chambers Street, by the intersection with the George IV Bridge, in central Edinburgh. The museum is part of National Museums Scotland. Admission is free.
The two buildings retain distinctive characters: the Museum of Scotland is housed in a modern building opened in 1998, while the former Royal Museum building was begun in 1861, and partially opened in 1866, with a Victorian Romanesque Revival facade and a grand central hall of cast iron construction that rises the full height of the building. This building reopened on 29 July 2011 after a £47 million project to restore and extend the building, and redesign the exhibitions (by Ralph Appelbaum).
The National Museum incorporates the collections of the former National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland, and the Royal Museum. As well as the main national collections of Scottish archaeological finds and medieval objects, the museum contains artifacts from around the world, encompassing geology, archaeology, natural history, science, technology and art. The 16 new galleries reopened in 2011 include 8,000 objects, 80 per cent of which were not formerly on display.
One of the more notable exhibits is the stuffed body of Dolly the sheep, the first successful clone of a mammal from an adult cell. Other highlights include Ancient Egyptian exhibitions, one of Elton John's extravagant suits and a large kinetic sculpture named the Millennium Clock.

The chairman of the William Brown Library and Museum, Sir James Picton, laid the foundation stone of the Picton Reading Room in 1875. It was designed by Cornelius Sherlock, and modelled after the British Museum Reading Room, and was the first electrically lit library in the UK. It was completed in 1879 formally opened by the Mayor of Liverpool, Sir Thomas Bland Royden. The front is semicircular with Corinthian columns, and the shape was chosen by the architect to cover the change in the axis of the row of buildings at this point. The Hornby Reading Room (named after Hugh Frederick Hornby) by Thomas Shelmerdine was added in 1906. It stands behind the older building and the interior is decorated in the Edwardian Imperial style

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM9ARN - A far larger pub than it appears from its little frontage, the Camel & Artichoke has existed at this spot in some form or other for over 200 years. Its name is partly taken from an old route for artichokes through London some time ago, and camels.
Temp without losing benefits?
There are no camels on the relatively spartan food menu, so in all honesty we're not sure where that comes from. Mind you there are no artichokes on the menu either. Something's not quite right about all this.
In addition to the main downstairs bar there's an extra seating area upstairs. There's also the pleasant rear beer garden which is this pub's most endearing feature and was packed to the brim on a balmy Thursday night.
Various screens for live sport can be found, though every time we looked at them every screen featured Rory McIlroy. Which was a bit strange, as the cricket was on.
A number of behatted mannequin heads stare grimly down from a shelf above the bar. There were a handful of ales at average prices, and though only one was actually on at the time there seemed to be movement to make two more 'live' and that's usually a good sign. There may be some interest among the hardier elbow-lifter in the offer of ten pence extra to make your shot a double, noddingly confirmed by the barman to a pair of incredulous Americans who couldn't get enough of an offer like that, as if it substantiated their very best and worst fears about the British art of drinking.

The Flame arrived in Warrington from Halton via Liverpool Road at around 12.30pm. It will travel the length of Sankey Street, past the Golden Gates and Bank Park, where 300 primary school children took part in a mini-Olympics.
It was then carried to Market Gate where the 70-strong Warrington Male Voice Choir performed, and then turn down Buttermarket Street and on to Winwick Street. The Torch then called into Tesco for a 15-minute stop.
The route was announced by Warrington Borough Council and the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG).
Members of the public are invited to line the streets throughout the town centre or to visit Orford Park to celebrate the achievements of the eight inspirational Torchbearers who will be carrying the Flame in Warrington.
Torchbearers included Great Sankey resident Stephen Deakin MBE. He is the manager of the Royal Liverpool Hospital transplant sports team and an enthusiastic campaigner for organ donation.
Stephen aged 50, said: When I first heard I had been nominated I was absolutely made up but to be chosen to carry the torch. I am really honoured and humbled.
Other torch bearers from Warrington include Emily Woodward age 12, Helen Lea, age 42, Ian Livingston and Jason El-kaleh age 17.
Cllr Terry O'Neill, leader of the council, said: I would encourage everyone to come out and see the Flame as it comes through the town, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity and a chance to get the countdown to London 2012 officially started in Warrington.

'Art for Art's Sake' is a single from the 'How dare You!' album, by the British Pop/Rock band 10cc. It was released in 1975. The band were Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme. They were all played multiple instruments and most of the band's albums were recorded at their own Strawberry Studios (North) in Stockport, England. I used to work about 2 minutes walk away from it. Eric Stewart engineered most releases.
Most of the band were from Manchester and grew up together as kids. They were originally rejected by The Beatles Apple label. Jonathan King signed the band to his UK Records label in July 1972 and dubbed them 10cc. By his own account, King chose the name after having a dream in which he was standing in front of the Hammersmith Odeon in London where the boarding read '10cc The Best Band in the World'.
A widely repeated claim, disputed by King and Godley, but confirmed in a 1988 interview by Creme, and also on the webpage of Gouldman's current lineup, is that the band name represented a volume of semen that was more than the average amount ejaculated by men, thus emphasising their potency or prowess.
The band had a canon of hits in teh mid 1970's. In February 1975 the band announced they had signed with Mercury Records for US$1 million. The catalyst for the deal was one song \u2013 'I'm Not in Love'.
A compilation album 'Changing Faces - The Very Best of 10cc and Godley &
Creme' is a good intro to the band.

The Lowry is a combined theatre and gallery complex situated in Salford Quays, in Salford, England. It is named after the early 20th century painter, L. S. Lowry, known for this paintings of industrial scenes in North West England.
Designed by Michael Wilford and Buro Happold, (Wayfinding System and 'Artworks at the Lowry Gallery' by Reich + Petch) the building was completed in 1999 costing \u00a3120 million.
Funding was helped by \u00a321m of National Lottery grant. The aerofoil canopy at the entrance is clad with perforated steel and illuminated from the inside at night. It was officially opened on 12 October 2000 by Queen Elizabeth II.
When I was a lad the dock complex at the Pomona Salford Docks was very run down and a good place to be picked off by a .22 air rifle pellet. Today the showcase Lowry has been joined by The Imperial War Museum North a shopping complex and MediaCityUK. This is a 200 acre complex, whose The main tenant upon initial completion will be the BBC at its new 12,500m\u00b2 BBC Centre.
When completed, the development will have an unusual feature in that the streets will not bear any names, but will instead be identified by colours alone. The address of the BBC will, for example, be 'Blue'. The BBC have a long history in the city, BBC's very first regional TV studio was also in Manchester \u2013 Studio A at Dickenson Road \u2013 which it had bought from Mancunian Films in 1954. A place where Top of The Pops was originally filmed.
BBC North West will relocate to the site from its current premises in Oxford Road, Manchester.

It possesses a large inflorescence (flowering head), and its name is derived from the flower's shape and image, which is often used to capture the sun. The plant has a rough, hairy stem, broad, coarsely toothed, rough leaves, and circular flower heads.
The heads consist of many individual flowers which mature into seeds, often in the hundreds, on a receptacle base. From the Americas, sunflower seeds were brought to Europe in the 16th century, where, along with sunflower oil, they became a widespread cooking ingredient. Leaves of the sunflower can be used as cattle feed, while the stems contain a fibre which may be used in paper production.

Photobooth was the first EP from St Albans dance punk lads Friendly Fires in mid 2006. It more or less slipped under the radar until the bands full first album came out. The name Friendly Fires originates from the opening track of the Manchester Factory label 'Section 25' LP 'Always Now'. (Maybe a track from them later in this series).
The first self titled album was certified double gold in the UK. The band was nominated for a Best Breakthrough Award at The South Bank Show Awards and for \u2018Best Dancefloor Filler\u2019 at the NME Awards. They were also second on the bill on the NME Awards Tour 2009.
On 21 July 2009, the band was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. On 19 January 2010, the band was nominated for two Brit Awards
Best British Group and British Breakthrough Act.

Burton upon Trent, also known as Burton-on-Trent or simply Burton, is a large town straddling the River Trent in the east of Staffordshire, England. Its associated adjective is 'Burtonian'.
Burton is best known for its brewing heritage, home to over a dozen breweries in its heyday. It originally grew up around Burton-on-Trent Abbey, the monastery of St. Modwen, and had grown into a busy market town by the early modern period. While Burton's great bridge over the Trent was in poor repair by the early 16th century it served as 'a comen passage to and fro many countries to the grett releff and comfort of travellyng people', according to the abbot. The town, which had an estimated population of 64,449 (2001 Census), lies within the National Forest.

The area has battle form.
On 14 March 1655 Sir John Penruddock was captured after a three-hour street fight in South Molton by soldiers of the New Model Army under the command of Captain Unton Crook. With his capture the Penruddock uprising came to an end and so did the 1655 plans of the Sealed Knot to restore King Charles II to the throne of England.
It is a small, well built market town trading mostly in sheep and cattle. Situated on the southern side of Exmoor just off the North Devon link road.

The red leather english cricket ball is where the eye is drawn to. Below it is a leather hand stitched Hearts (Heart of Midlothian) 1956 soccer football. Hearts is one of the two major city teams in the east of Scotland together with Hibs (Hibernian).
The leather Hearts ball celebrates the Heart of Midlothian 1956 team, who won the Scottish Cup by defeating Glasgow Celtic 3-1 at Hampden Park. In the same year they also finished League runners-up. This included Hearts legends Freedie Glidden (Captain), Alex Young, Conn, Bauld and Wardhaugh. Programmes from this year are a great find if rumminging around in the cities antique and curio shops.

It is built in sandstone with steeply pitched slate roofs. Its plan consists of a nave of six bays, a chancel of two bays, a north aisle and a west porch. A west bellcote has a single bell.
It is a Grade II listed building.

Warrington has been a major crossing point on the River Mersey since ancient times and there was a Roman settlement at Wilderspool. In medieval times Warrington's importance was as a bridging point of the River Mersey, and it was a fulcrum in the English Civil War.
The armies of Oliver Cromwell and the Earl of Derby both stayed near the old town centre (the parish church area). Popular legend has it that Cromwell lodged near the building which survives on Church Street as The Cottage Restaurant. The Marquis of Granby public house bears a plaque stating that the Earl of Derby 'had his quarters near this site'. Dents in the walls of the parish church are rumoured to have been caused by the cannons from the time of the Civil War. On the 13 August 1651 Warrington was the scene of the last Royalist victory of the Civil War when Scots troops under Charles II and David Leslie, Lord Newark, fought Parliamentarians under John Lambert at The Battle of Warrington Bridge.
The expansion and urbanisation of Warrington largely coincided with the Industrial Revolution, particularly after the Mersey was made navigable in the 18th Century. As Britain became industrialised, Warrington embraced the industrial revolution becoming a manufacturing town and a centre of steel (particularly wire, given its name to the local Rugby team 'Wires'), textiles, brewing, tanning and chemical industries.
The navigational properties of the river Mersey were improved, canals were built, and the town grew yet more prosperous and popular. When the age of steam came, Warrington naturally welcomed it, both as a means of transport and as a source of power for its mills.
Heavy industry declined in the 1970s and 1980s but the growth of the new town around Warrington led to a great increase in employment in light industry, distribution and technology.
