Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PPEC - This image shows an entrance to the Golden Square Shopping Centre in Warrington as it appeared in 1984, featuring bright colours and design elements characteristic of late twentieth-century retail architecture. The bold palette and decorative styling reflect a period when shopping centres were positioned as modern, lively civic spaces intended to revitalise town centres and encourage consumer footfall.
Golden Square Shopping Centre has long been a central feature of Warrington's retail landscape, connecting key pedestrian routes and housing a mix of national chains and local businesses. During the 1980s, centres such as this represented a shift in British shopping habits, moving towards covered malls and integrated retail environments designed around convenience and visual impact.
The colourful entrance illustrates broader trends in 1980s commercial design, where strong colours and graphic elements were used to create identity and appeal. Today, such imagery provides valuable documentary insight into changing approaches to town-centre retail and the visual language of consumer spaces in late twentieth-century Britain.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited for editorial use covering UK retail history, shopping centre development, 1980s architecture and design, and the evolution of town-centre commercial spaces.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M3JBM0 - There are various modes of transport available in Warrington.
Warrington has seven railway stations within its boundaries. The town has two main railway stations, Bank Quay on the London to Glasgow and Chester ? Warrington ? Newton-le-Willows ? Manchester lines, and Central on the Liverpool ? Widnes ? Manchester line and the Transpennine route. Bank Quay is much altered, but Central (built 1873) is of some architectural merit, featuring polychromatic brickwork. However, both main railway stations have suffered from years of under investment. A new entrance and concourse has been built at Bank Quay, and similar work started in July 2010 at Central station. There are also stations in the suburbs at Warrington West, Sankey, Glazebrook, Padgate and Birchwood.
The town and its districts are fairly well served by bus services. Warrington's Own Buses is the main provider of services, operating most of the day time bus routes. Arriva North West, First Greater Manchester. National Express also operate their long-distance services through Warrington. Most services that serve Warrington depart from and arrive at Warrington Interchange. However services can be caught from various points around the town centre, principally Rylands Street (for South and Eastbound routes), Academy Way (Inbound and Eastbound routes), Warrington Central for Northbound services, Sankey Street for Westbound, Eastbound and Southbound buses.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MN7NNM - Viola Beach will be etched in Warrington's history forever thanks to the bronze frieze of the band unveiled September 2021.
The sculpture added outside Warrington Parr Hall serves as a tribute to Jack Dakin, River Reeves, Kris Leonard, Tom Lowe and Craig Tarry ? the members and manager of the band.
The frieze, unveiled by the commissioned artist Tom Murphy, depicts the band alongside iconic elements of Warrington and serves as a permanent tribute in their memory.
Ben Dunne, dad of River Reeves, said: As a group of family and friends, seeing our son, step-son, brother, nephew, cousin, and good friend captured in bronze with his mates was both heart-breaking and strangely comforting.
River looked happy and at peace, and to think that people in hundreds of years time will be able to see him like that is almost hard to comprehend.
Thank you to all those people who gave so generously in 2016 and to the council for making it happen, he added.
Thank you also to Tom Murphy for creating something so beautiful now destined to keep River, the band and Craig close to the heart of the town forever.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Russ Bowden, said: The unveiling of the frieze is a celebration of Jack, River, Kris, Tom and Craig, their achievements, and their iconic music.
I am pleased that the council has been able to work with their families to create this fitting tribute, which serves as a humbling reminder of their story.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CB00B3 - By the middle of the 15th century the population of the town had increased to about 1,300 people and, even though travelling was hard, Warrington's markets and fairs were known far and near. The lanes around the market became so crowded with stalls and animals that an open space had to be made in the north west corner of the crossroads. On early maps this was called the ?forum', and later the ?corn market'.
The rights to collect tolls on these markets and fairs remained with the barons of Warrington, and later with the lords of the manor, until 1856 when the new corporation bought them from John Ireland Blackburne, the then Lord of the Manor.
The Victorian market
Three years later the Warrington Improvement and Market Act said the corporation could hold and maintain a market, and could also to build on any land purchased under the powers of the Act, or on any land forming part of any street. The buildings were market houses and places for the sale of cattle, hay and other articles.
After much debate a new market hall for meat traders was built in 1856, which was an impressive brick and stone building.
It was extended in 1873, adding a cast iron-framed fish market hall. Later, a glass-roofed general market hall was built on land behind the Barley Mow Inn.
The market in the 1960s-1970s
By the late 1960s, the Victorian market halls had become outdated and they couldn't meet the modern standards of health and hygiene. It was impossible to build a new market around the old without stopping trading for a long time.
When Warrington became a New Town, the town centre was redeveloped and the market was moved to Bank Street, where it would provide a counterbalance to the new Golden Square shopping centre.
The new market was designed on three levels, based on the natural fall of the ground, meaning that each floor came out at ground level. It gave service access to the back of shops on Bridge Street via a tunnel from the basement.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ADR2DE - TRIBUTES have been paid to the American artist who created Warrington's iconic skittles.
Howard Ben Tre died earlier this summer, aged 71.
Described as a 'larger than life character' he was famed in the art world for his large-scale glass sculptures.
But his work in Warrington was rather different.
Howard and first wife Gay won a contest to create public art on Bridge Street and Market Gate after the devastating bombing of 1993. The work was finished in 1999.
The couple spent two years overseeing the town centre's transformation, replacing the main thoroughfare with trees, fountains, seating and sculpture that connected the shops.
Growing up in New York, he lived in Rhode Island where he has a studio.
Howard and Gay, both active in protesting the Vietnam War, married when they were 21.
We had a very adventurous life together, Gay Ben Tr?? said. He once told her: Without me, we wouldn't have had as many adventures
without you, we wouldn't have survived.
His second wife Wendy MacGaw told the Providence Journal he was a 'force of nature'.
Howard returned to Warrington in 2009, ten years after the skittles and fountains had first been revealed.
Cllr Mike Hannon, who came up with the idea for the artwork, said it had helped to transform Warrington.
He added: Howard was actually talking about Warrington at an event in York and he got to see it with the trees matured.
It was controversial at the time but if I was asked would I do it again, I would say definitely yes.
I believe in the rationale behind it and experts say we would not have had the investment in the Golden Square with all the money and jobs that brought without the public artworks.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K41KR0 - Thorntons Limited is a British chocolate manufacturer owned by the Italian confectionery company, Ferrero. It was established in 1911 by Joseph William Thornton and his father in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.
When Cadbury became part of the Mondelez International predecessor Kraft Foods, Thorntons had become the largest confectionery-only parent company in Britain. The company was purchased by the Italian firm Ferrero in June 2015 for ?112m.
Until and during the Second World War, the company was an established toffee and fudge maker. With post war rationing ending, the group's primary focus shifted to Belgian and Swiss-style chocolate in sets.
Thorntons began in Sheffield in 1911, the business being started by Joseph William Thornton (1870?1919), who co opened the company's first shop, at 159 Norfolk Street. Norman, his son, became the manager, at the age of just 15. Later in the company's history, Peter Thornton (grandson of the founder) served as chairman, but was dismissed from the role in June 1987
It was announced in June 2015 that chocolate producer Ferrero would buy Thorntons, for ?112 million. Thorntons Ltd are 75% owned by Ferholding UK Ltd, which, in turn, is controlled by Giovanni Ferrero (who holds over 50% of voting rights).[citation needed]
With Ferrero investment into the business to try to increase revenue, through the financial year of 2017 to 2018 sales and production increased. Fewer new shops were opened with some existing locations diversified into caf??s, selling a range of both eat-in and take-away food and drinks alongside the traditional confectionary lines. In 2020, Thorntons won the Lausanne Index Prize - Bronze Award.
On 15 March 2021, it was announced that all 61 remaining Thorntons retail stores were to close after UK government COVID-19 pandemic restrictions lifted. The pandemic restrictions had meant that all Thorntons retail stores had closed for much of 2020, and the business was now going to restructure

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RK9X6K - Patisserie Valerie is a chain of caf??s that operates in the United Kingdom. The chain specialises in cakes, and its menu included continental breakfasts, lunches and teas and coffees. The company went into administration in January 2019, prior to a management buyout funded by Causeway Capital Partners.
According to Helene (Leni) Vermeirsch, the niece of the founders, Patisserie Valerie was first opened in 1926 on the corner of Dean Street and Old Compton Street in Soho, London by Esther van Gyseghem, born in Ostende, Belgium on 22 April 1900 and her husband Theophile (Theo) Vermeirsch. There is not known to have been a Valerie in the founders' families, but Esther came to be referred to as Madame Valerie.
The chain has expanded rapidly since 2006, growing from eight shops in 2006 to 192 as of May 2017. It opened its first shop in the Republic of Ireland in 2017, in Debenhams in Blanchardstown Centre.
In April 2014 the company announced plans to raise ?33m on the London Alternative Investment Market, using the sum to reduce its debt.
Trading in the shares of Patisserie Holdings, the parent company of Patisserie Valerie, were suspended on 10 October 2018 following the discovery of potentially fraudulent accounting irregularities, which had led to the possibility that there had been a material mis-statement of the company's accounts.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXKGB - LGBT Warrington is organised by LGBT members who are all volunteers. The group has built great relationships with partners, which include the Council, police, health and local businesses.
They are here to help and welcome anyone who would like to join us to stamp out the stigma people may have on the LGBT community.
The group offers support to those who need it on a 1-2-1 basis and is treated with great confidentiality, and point people in the right direction of the services they require.
They meet throughout the year mainly to have a brew and chat about life in general, to meet and make new friends, and for those who require extra support, to help by signposting to relevant services in Warrington. We also at times hold activities such as bowling, theatre trips, quizzes and games.
They also have nights out in the town centre at Cotton Mill or Show Bar and take part with events they are holding, or even have the odd night out to Manchester to Canal Street or to the theatre.
During the year they are also visited by guest speakers.
They welcome visitors and potential new members whatever their sexuality, though is open to 18+ only.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXRDM - LGBT Warrington is organised by LGBT members who are all volunteers.

?Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
Photobooth was the first EP from St Albans dance punk lads Friendly Fires in mid 2006. It more or less slipped under the radar until the bands full first album came out. The name Friendly Fires originates from the opening track of the Manchester Factory label 'Section 25' LP 'Always Now'. (Maybe a track from them later in this series).
The first self titled album was certified double gold in the UK. The band was nominated for a Best Breakthrough Award at The South Bank Show Awards and for \u2018Best Dancefloor Filler\u2019 at the NME Awards. They were also second on the bill on the NME Awards Tour 2009.
On 21 July 2009, the band was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. On 19 January 2010, the band was nominated for two Brit Awards
Best British Group and British Breakthrough Act.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PEHG3X - Warrington's Own Buses has always rallied against rival bus companies to hang on to its market, and has always succeeded thanks to loyal support from the local community. We strive to deliver the best possible public transport service for Warrington, and our community ownership gives locals a real say on transport strategy.
We carry over 6 million passengers per year using a fleet of 91 buses that operate approximately 5 million kilometres in service per annum. Warrington is currently one of the fastest growing economies in the North West and high quality public transport is essential to the town's continued development.
With seven non-executive directors on our board, as well as three locally based, full-time management directors, we combine the best of private sector experience with public sector ethos, allowing local people to make local decisions about the running of local services.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HDW8 - Warrington Bus Interchange (also known as Warrington Interchange) is a bus station in the town of Warrington, Cheshire, England.
The building opened on 21 August 2006, next to the site of a temporary terminus that had been in use for the past thirteen months. The new interchange was built in conjunction with the extension and upgrade of the adjoining Golden Square shopping centre, and replaced the previous bus station which dated from 1979.
The interchange consists of 19 departure stands, numbered from 1 to 19, all of which employ a drive-in reverse-out layout. Each stand has a computerised information screen which also ties into the real-time information system. All stands are served from the main concourse building, which contains toilets, access to the adjoining Bhs coffee shop and a combined travel and tourist information office. There is access to the shopping centre via escalators and lifts. The exits on the eastern side of the building lead onto Winwick Street, on which can be found a taxi rank and Warrington Central railway station within around 100 metres.
