A 15-ft high, wood and steel sculpture of a crucifixion by Charles Lutyens, first seen in his exhibition of work, Being in the World, at St Paul's Church, Bow Common, London has recently been installed in Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral.
Called Outraged Christ, this was a spontaneous work ? it wasn't commissioned ? created intermittently over a number of years. With the intent of having an encounter with this ?Man' and with the reality of the event taking place, the sculpture was driven by such questions as Who was this Man?, What did He look like? and Why was this crucifixion remembered for 2,000 years over and above the countless other crucifixions that have taken place? It is a moving and powerful image which, in its making, disclosed itself to Charles as an Outraged Christ. Deeply engaged with this extraordinary event, Charles thought, If the resurrection happened, then was it not already inherent in the crucifixion?
The Grade II-listed St Paul's Church, designed by architects Robert Maguire and Keith Murray and consecrated in 1964, was recently voted Best modern church in Great Britain. It also contains the stunning 800-sq ft mosaic mural, also by Charles, called Angels of the Heavenly Host, the largest single artist-created mosaic mural in the British Isles. Asked by the architects to provide a design for this work I said, at the time, ?Sorry, it is not possible for me to design an angel, angels appear', recalls Charles. But, incredibly, the architects then said, ?All right, appear us an angel'. Charles recently gave a talk, in situ, for English Heritage about the mural and its making.

Tsar Peter the Great's visit is commemorated by a plaque on the front of the building which was unveiled in 1998 by the Russian Ambassador to commemorate the tricentenary of the visit.

Gambling Commission calls for pub industry to take faster action to prevent under 18s accessing gaming machines in pubs

A review of pubs in England and Wales has shown that 84% of them are failing to prevent under 18-year-olds from playing Category C gaming machines, also known as fruit machines.
Local authorities have primary responsibility for regulating these machines and businesses are responsible for ensuring that they are compliant in checking age verification. Over the last 12 months the Gambling Commission has worked with local authorities and local police to test compliance with laws in place to protect children from the risks gambling can pose.
Children are not permitted to play Category C gaming machines in pubs. Staff are expected to stop children playing on the machines and there should be clear signage indicating the age restriction.
This follows a test sample taken in 2018 which found that 88% of pubs in England failed to prevent children accessing 18+ gaming machines.
The findings suggest that the rules in place around these machines are still not being appropriately enforced and many employees are still unaware of the restrictions.
Programme Director, Helen Rhodes said: The pub industry must accelerate action to enforce these rules. Pubs must take age verification on machines as seriously as they do for alcohol sales, and they risk losing their entitlement to offer machines if they do not.
Adding: ?'The results last year were extremely disappointing and we have supported local authorities in their action to raise standards. This includes working with the providers of training to the pub industry to emphasise the legal requirements in training materials, as well as with the Home Office to work towards including materials on gambling in pubs in the curriculum for the personal licence holder

Two medieval chapels are integrated into the present building. Its core is made from the local sandstone, Bargate stone from the nearby Greensand Ridge, which is found close to the town. A church has stood on this site since at least the mid-ninth century. It features several carved stones, which are dated between 820 and 840. A few Anglo Saxon remnants survive in the present structure, which was largely rebuilt in the twelfth century. In 1086, the Domesday Book recorded that Ranulf Flambard, justiciar of William Rufus, held Godalming church.
The lammas, or common land, complemented a substantial glebe, the funds from which allowed for a grand and spacious structure to be built.
First built during the Anglo-Saxon and early Norman periods, the structure has been proven in ecclesiastical records to have been a redevelopment of an Anglo-Saxon church
The Church has a fine set of bells hung for the traditional English-style of bell-ringing. The tenor weighs just over a tonne and weighs in at 1221 kg.

The principal feature is a central projecting circular tower with chamfered base with buttresses, above an octagonal section with trefoil heads and pointed canopies, band of quatrefoils and clock face to top and delicate stone spire with cast iron finial. The central door has been blocked. On either side are projecting gabled wings with fretted wooden bargeboards, trefoil decorations to the gables and central ten-light casements flanked by four-pane lights.
Dedication stone at the base of each gable, one the corner stone of the 1813 building, the other of the 1872 building. Right elevation has half-hipped gable with fretted bargeboards and eight-light window but C20 door below. Four further four-light windows. Left side has similar half-hipped gable and window, now with C20 door, two four-light windows and early C20 brick and glazed square porch. To the rear of the side elevations are small c1900 extensions of red brick in stretcher bond with stone dressings tiled roofs and mullioned and transomed windows. The Georgian frontage was added in 1753 although the size of the building was reduced in the 1890s when a decline in trade resulted in part of the front being turned into a shop. It wasn't until 1936 that the Kings left private ownership and was bought by the Friary Brewery of Guildford which later became part of Allied Breweries.
We've had a few famous guests over the years including Tsar Peter the Great (who left without paying his bill!) as well as some European royalty who met here in 1814 to discuss post war Europe after the Battle of Trafalgar. Tsar Peter the Great's visit is commemorated by a plaque on the front of the building which was unveiled in 1998 by the Russian Ambassador to commemorate the tricentenary of the visit.

Pump clips can be made of various materials. For beers that are brewed regularly by the big breweries, high quality plastic, metal or ceramic pump clips are used. Smaller breweries would use a printed plastic pump clip and for one-off beers laminated paper is used. He was the lead singer of the late-1970s punk band the Sex Pistols, which was active from 1975 to 1978, and again for various revivals during the 1990s and 2000s. He is also the lead singer of post-punk band Public Image Ltd (PiL), which he founded and fronted from 1978 until 1993, and again since 2009.
Lydon's outspoken personality, rebellious image and fashion style led to his being asked to become the singer of the Sex Pistols by their manager, Malcolm McLaren. With the Sex Pistols, he penned singles including Anarchy in the U.K., God Save the Queen and Holidays in the Sun, the content of which precipitated what one commentator described as the 'last and greatest outbreak of pop-based moral pandemonium' in Britain. The band scandalised much of the media, and Lydon was seen as a figurehead of the burgeoning punk movement. Because of their controversial lyrics and disrepute at the time, they are regarded as one of the most influential acts in the history of popular music.
After the Sex Pistols disbanded in 1978, Lydon founded his own band, Public Image Ltd, which was far more experimental in nature and described in a 2005 review by NME as 'arguably the first post-rock group'

The fountain was influenced by the Trevi Fountain in Rome and shows Neptune, the Rome god of water, holding a trident as a symbol of his power over the sea. After the visit to Cheltenham in 1788 of King George III, the town became increasingly fashionable, and wells were opened up at several points round the town. Pittville, the vision of Joseph Pitt, was a planned 'new town' development of the 1820s, in which the centre-piece was (and remains) a pump-room where the waters of one of the more northerly wells could be taken.

It remained like this until early in the 19th century when, because of the growth of the town and its industries, a perimeter wall was built around the estate to provide some privacy.

In the middle there is also an open two-arm staircase, with a fine wrought iron balustrade, leading up to the main entrance, which is flanked by a pair of arched windows with the typical Gibbs surround.
The pediments of the windows on the main floor in the side sections have alternating triangular and elliptical heads. The construction year, 1750, is shown on the rainwater-heads on the sides of the building.
The north side of the hall is completely of brick and altogether simpler.
As more traffic started to use Sankey Street, the Patten family built a high brick wall in front of the building to give them privacy. But when the council bought Bank Hall in 1870 and turned it into Warrington's new town hall, local people started to complain that they were paying rates which helped to look after the building ? but they couldn't even see it!
So Frederick Monks, one of the town's earliest councillors, came up with an idea. As a local ironmaster, he could give the town hall a fitting entrance
As a young man, Monks was an apprentice of P P Carpenter of Cairo Street. He worked his way up and then helped to create Monks Hall and Company, which became one of the country's leading manufacturers of iron and steel. Through his business, he heard about a magnificent pair of iron gate

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D8D633 - In the 1990s several surveys were undertaken at St Mary's church, highlighting areas of structural instability and poor maintenance. The congregation had also fallen to around 400. The bishop decided to merge the parish with that of St Augustine
that parish had been erected in 1929 to cater for new residential areas in Westy, but the church had been closed and demolished in 2005. A new church would be built to serve the new parish and old St Mary's would be demolished. However, the old church was listed in 2005, and its future remains unresolved.
The new church was built at Latchford, on a site on Knutsford Road equidistant between the two former parish churches. In June 2008 the first designs, by David Horne of Hulme Upright Manning, were displayed, and the comments of the community carefully considered in the final design and decoration of the church. Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands

Close was born on 11 July 1797 in Frome, Somerset, the youngest son of the Rev. Henry Jackson Close, who was at one time Rector of Bentworth, near Alton, in Hampshire. Enrolling at St. John's College, Cambridge in 1816 he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1820, and was elevated to MA in 1825. During the same time period, he was ordained a deacon in 1820, and as a priest the following year. In 1822 he was assigned as curate of Willesden and Kingsbury in the London area. Two years later, in 1824, he was assigned to Cheltenham and the parish church of St Mary's, and when the rector died in 1826, he was elevated to that office.
Close served as rector for thirty years, where he was a popular preacher and a noted evangelical. He was a vociferous opponent of the Oxford Movement. He advocated for the creation of a training college for schoolteachers and opposed alcohol, tobacco, horse racing and theatrical amusements. He was involved in the provision of new churches in Cheltenham. On 24 November 1856, he was nominated to be Dean of Carlisle Cathedral by the Prime Minister, Lord Palmerston, and the appointment was approved by the Queen. That same year, the Archbishop of Canterbury conferred a Lambeth Doctorate of Divinity upon Close. He remained as Dean of Carlisle until 1881, when failing health forced him to resign. At the time of his resignation, he was the oldest of all deans in the Church of England He died in Penzance the following year, on 12 December 1882, and was buried in Carlisle Cathedral

The Church stands not east-west but square to the Roman Road north through Carlisle (the A6, in town Blackfriars St). It is therefore of early foundation, perhaps before St Cuthbert's visit to Carlisle in 685. The present Church, probably the fourth on the site, dates from 1778.

Eleven small denominations, all sharing the Wesleyan heritage, came together in a series of unions between 1896 and 1958. One of those unions in 1908 is taken as the official beginning of the Church.
Of the eleven denominations, three were British. The first of these, a group in Scotland led by Rev. George Sharpe, joined in 1915. It is unusual in serving two separate dioceses (Connor and Down and Dromore), yet being the seat of neither (it is geographically in the Diocese of Connor), it is therefore not a cathedral in the truest sense of the word, a cathedral being a church housing the seat of a bishop.[1] It is, however, titled as such. It is the focal point of the Cathedral Quarter, Belfast.
The first architect was Sir Thomas Drew, the foundation stone being laid on 6 September 1899 by the Countess of Shaftesbury. The old parish church of St Anne by Francis Hiorne of 1776 had continued in use, up until 31 December 1903, while the new cathedral was constructed around it
the old church was then demolished. The Good Samaritan window, to be seen in the sanctuary, is the only feature of the old church to be retained in the cathedral. Initially, only the nave of the cathedral was built, and this was consecrated on 2 June 1904.
In 1924 it was decided to build the west front of the cathedral as a memorial to the Ulstermen and women who had served and died in World War I. The foundation stone for this was laid by Governor of Northern Ireland, the Duke of Abercorn on 2 June 1925 and the completed facade, to an amended design by the architect Sir Charles Archibald Nicholson, was dedicated in June 1927.

Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. A mural therefore exists to express an idea or message and could generally be seen as reflecting values held dear to that community.
In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands

'Saints' is a cracking track by The Breeders, released as the third and final single from their 1993 album Last Splash. It was released in 1994 on 4AD/Elektra Records.
The Breeders are an American alternative rock band formed in 1988 by Kim Deal of the Pixies and Tanya Donelly of Throwing Muses. The band has experienced a number of line-up changes
the current line-up consists of Kim Deal (lead vocals and guitar), her twin sister Kelley Deal (guitar and backing vocals), Jose Medeles (drums and percussion), Mando Lopez (bass guitar) Todd the Fox (guitar) and Cheryl Lyndsey (guitar)
Kim Deal has been the band's sole continual member.
Their first album, Pod (1990), received critical acclaim but was not commercially successful. The Breeders' most successful album, 1993's Last Splash, produced the hit single 'Cannonball'. Christ Church Cathedral (or more formally, The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity) is the cathedral of the United Dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough and the cathedral of the Ecclesiastical province of the United Provinces of Dublin and Cashel in the Church of Ireland. It is situated in Dublin, Ireland and is the elder of the capital city's two medi\u00e6val cathedrals, the other being St. Patrick's Cathedral.
Christ Church is officially claimed as the seat (cathedra) of both the Church of Ireland and Roman Catholic archbishops of Dublin. In practice, it has been the cathedral of only the Church of Ireland's Archbishop of Dublin, since the English Reformation. Though nominally claimed as his cathedral, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Dublin uses St Mary's in Malborough Street in Dublin, as his pro-cathedral (acting cathedral).[2]
Christ Church Cathedral is located in the former heart of medieval Dublin, next to Wood Quay, at the end of Lord Edward Street. However a major dual carriage-way building scheme around it separated it from the original medieval street pattern which once surrounded it, with its original architectural context (at the centre of a maze of small buildings and streets) lost due to road-building and the demolition of the older residential quarter at Wood Quay. As a result the cathedral now appears dominant in isolation behind new civil offices along the quays, out of its original medieval context.
Christ Church is the only one of the three cathedrals or acting cathedrals which can be seen clearly from the River Liffey.

Towering over his childhood was a large statue of Jesus (with a capital J) enveloped in a glass dome.
Outstretched hands, faded paint, the mark of a good or at least devout family of believers. He never knew what his old dad thought of it, never asked him. In this house honesty was the best policy. In later years he recognised it as the classic alabaster sacred heart, after the catholic schooling had done its work. He was set up for the world of alter boys, communion wine the fantastic smell of extinguished votive candles and the corruption of the local SVdeP chapter.
He could recite the Our father, traverse the rosary like a Greek fisherman handling worry beads and share his confession through the screen to Fr Kirkpatrick, early every third Saturday morning.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4468213250 - 'Rehearsal with conductor Jeremy Jackman prior to the candlelight concert by the English Baroque Choir. St Martins is in the north east corner of Trafalgar Square, central London. The patron saint is Martin of Tours.
It is a classic church, a bit of peace from the noise and traffic of Westminster. Its pretty much rectangular with Corinthian style columns. As can be seen here, the ceiling is lovely and provides a warm glow inside. The large window at the altar has an interesting distortion.
There was a lot of work done between 2006-2008 to renovate different parts of the structure. The new East Window installed above the altar at St Martin in the Fields was one element. Designed by Shirazeh Houshiary, in collaboration with architect Pip Horne. This window replacing the old window (following World War II bomb damage) marked the final stage of the church's Renewal Project on 28 April 2008.
Donations are always welcome however and I noticed it is still possible to sponsor a pane of glass and 'Give light to St Martin's'. It offers social care services to London's Chinese community and homeless people.

This was taken at the Oulton Park track while getting ready for the 2010 season that starts easter weekend, april 4th. the season ends at Donnington October 17th 2010.
Again for the 2010 season, the twins will be competing in the Ascari KZ1-R Chassis BMW M62 5.0L V8.
In 2009 the twins were very successful, competing in all rounds. They were winning drivers at Knockhill (June 13th), Snetterton (July 4th), Brands Hatch (September 19th). They were top of the GT3 table with 87 points, overall winners in the year.
They are a lovely couple of chaps and I will be cheering them on this coming season, to show those young lads how its done!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PG60Y2 - There has been a building on our site since the 1300s although the first mention of the Kings itself is not until 1639. The Georgian frontage was added in 1753 although the size of the building was reduced in the 1890s when a decline in trade resulted in part of the front being turned into a shop. It wasn't until 1936 that the Kings left private ownership and was bought by the Friary Brewery of Guildford which later became part of Allied Breweries.
We've had a few famous guests over the years including Tsar Peter the Great (who left without paying his bill!) as well as some European royalty who met here in 1814 to discuss post war Europe after the Battle of Trafalgar. Tsar Peter the Great's visit is commemorated by a plaque on the front of the building which was unveiled in 1998 by the Russian Ambassador to commemorate the tricentenary of the visit.

other notable settlements are the towns of Farnham and Haslemere and the large village of Cranleigh. At the 2021 Census, the population of the borough was 128,200.
Waverley borders the borough of Guildford to the north, the Mole Valley district to the east, the Horsham and Chichester districts of West Sussex to the south, and the East Hampshire and Hart districts and the borough of Rushmoor in Hampshire to the west and northwest. The borough is named after Waverley Abbey, near Farnham, the earliest Cistercian monastery in Britain. Blackheath Common, in the north of the borough, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Waverley is a Wealden borough, bounded to the north by the Hog's Back section of the North Downs and by the Greensand Ridge. It has the most green space in absolute terms in Surrey at 293.1 km2 (113 sq. mi.) according to the central government-compiled Generalised Land Use database of January 2005, approximately half of which is woodland.
Much of the west of the borough echoes former ownership by the abbey, such as Waverley Cricket Club and the Waverley Arms pubs in Farnham and elsewhere. Equally echoed are the tens of square miles held under Farnham holding of the Bishop of Winchester which took in the western parishes of Frensham and Churt as well as much of Farnham parish since the early 12th century when one such Bishop, Henry of Winchester and of Blois established Farnham Castle as the See's episcopal home but which is today the borough's main surviving castle and a museum to the period.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M7JH3Y - The Pittville Pump Room was the last and largest of the spa buildings to be built in Cheltenham.
The benefits of Cheltenham's mineral waters had been recognised since 1716, but not until after the arrival of Henry Skillicorne in 1738 did serious exploitation of their potential as an attraction begin. After the visit to Cheltenham in 1788 of King George III, the town became increasingly fashionable, and wells were opened up at several points round the town. Pittville, the vision of Joseph Pitt, was a planned 'new town' development of the 1820s, in which the centre-piece was (and remains) a pump-room where the waters of one of the more northerly wells could be taken.
The Pump
The Pump Room was built by the architect John Forbes between 1825 and 1830. It is a Grade I listed building standing at the northern end of Pittville Lawn with landscaped grounds running down to a lake. The building contains the original Pump, made of marble and scagliola, to which the waters are today fed by electric pumping.
The building has a colonnade of Ionic columns
the interior houses a ballroom on its ground floor. Further Ionic columns support a gallery under a dome from which music might be played
on upper floors there were a billiard room, library and reading room. Above the colonnade are three statues, by Lucius Gahagen, erected in 1827, of the goddess Hygieia, Aesculapius and Hippocrates.
The Pump Room and its grounds were managed during the 19th century by a succession of lessees, who offered the typical fare of pleasure gardens including menageries, exhibitions and balloon ascents. However the concession did not prove lucrative. Eventually Pitt himself went bankrupt and in 1890 the Room and the grounds passed into the ownership of the town council.
They are now part of The Cheltenham Trust, a charity which also manages the Cheltenham Town Hall, the Wilson Art Gallery & Museum, the Prince of Wales Stadium and Leisure @ - plus the town's Tourist Information Centre

The key is not about the physical space but about making space for relationship with God who from the beginning of time longs to be with His people and connect with them. We know that God is everywhere and we can meet with God anywhere and everywhere, but a Prayer Room with time and place set aside can be an important part of growing in relationship with God. It's a great addition to be part of continual prayer in local church life and helpful being in a place with no distractions with focuses for prayer.
