Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KEBJ2J - The Wilson, formerly known as Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum, in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, was opened in 1899. It offers free admission, and has a programme of special exhibitions. It was renamed The Wilson in honour of polar explorer Edward Wilson, a son of Cheltenham, in 2013 after the building was extended. The gallery and museum is managed by The Cheltenham Trust.
The museum is housed in part of a Regency building on Clarence Street (Cheltenham Library currently occupies much of the original building), designed as the Cheltenham Public Library by architect William Hill Knight, who also designed the Cheltenham Synagogue and Montpellier Walk.
In 2007 a national architectural design competition was launched by RIBA Competitions to extend the building, providing more space for the renowned Arts and Crafts collection. Through this process Berman Guedes Stretton were selected by Cheltenham Borough Council and the extension was completed in 2012.
Baron de Ferrieres, a former Mayor and Liberal MP for Cheltenham, gave 43 important paintings, mostly from Belgium and the Netherlands, to the town. He also donated £1,000 towards the building of a gallery in which to display them. The Museum was opened in 1907 in the adjacent former Schools of Art and Science. A major extension to the building by Hugh Casson was opened by the Princess Royal in September 1989, where the main entrance to the gallery is now situated.
The museum is particularly noted for its Arts and Crafts collection of furniture, textiles, ceramics, carvings, silver and jewellery which is recognised as an outstanding collection of international importance for which the Art Gallery & Museum has received Designated status.
Cheltenham's history is well represented, and in addition there are paintings spanning four centuries, oriental collections of pottery and costume, and archaeological treasures from the neighbouring Cotswolds.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M6W9GB - Everyman Theatre is a theatre based in Regent Street, Cheltenham. There are two auditoria in the building - the 675 seat main auditorium and the 60 seat Studio Theatre, originally named The Ralph Richardson Studio after Ralph Richardson.
The Grade II listed building was designed by Frank Matcham and was originally called The New Theatre and Opera House.It was opened on 1 October 1891 with a performance by Lilly Langtry
In 1929, the New Theatre and Opera House gained a licence to screen projected film, becoming a multi-purpose theatre and cinema. The licence stipulated that the building must continue to present live performance as well as cinema.
In World War II, the theatre became a Garrison Theatre, to civilians and the US soldiers based at Pittville. Many actors from London left the capital to escape the Blitz, bringing big names to Cheltenham.
The Cheltenham Corporation ran the building after World War II until 1960. In 1959 the building closed and was at risk of being sold. The Cheltenham Theatre Association published an advertisement in September 1959 advertising Urgent - Wanted £3,000 at once, to re-open Cheltenham Opera House.
In May 1960, the Cheltenham Theatre Association published another advertisement titled Great News, which announced that the Everyman Theatre would open on Monday 22 May 1960 with a world premiere presentation of N.C. Hunter's A Piece of Silver, starring Joyce Heron and Esmond Knight. The Cheltenham Theatre Association rebranded itself as the Everyman Theatre Association (ETA). It enjoyed booking advantages and raised money for the Theatre. Its 50th anniversary in 2010 was a great success
sadly, Covid lockdown prevented the 60th. Members enjoyed a variety of social activities, but, even before lockdown, support diminished and the ETA was wound up in late 2021. The benefits transferred to a new Priority Access Membership scheme administered directly by the theatre.

A visit by King George III secured Cheltenham's reputation as a fashionable place to be seen, and this popularity contributed to its rapid growth during the Regency Period. As a style, Regency Architecture started popping up in the late 1700's, pioneered by Scottish Architect Robert Adam, and continued even after King George IV's untimely death, well into the 1840's. It is strictly attributed to late Georgian architecture and is typified by a renaissance of neoclassicism, which drew inspiration from the Ancient Greeks and Romans, featuring Ionic Porticos and fluted columns galore. Anyone taking a casual stroll around Cheltenham will easily spot these ancient influences, which adorn many buildings in the Town. Regency Style was also used to describe the decorative arts of the interior design including block printed, or striped wallpaper, as well as the fashion of the time including the famous Empire silhouette. Much of Cheltenham's iconic architecture was built during the Regency and subsequent Reign of King George IV between 1811 and 1830. Unlike many other periods of architecture, Regency was not about strict building rules, and was instead more a set of 'guidelines' for the design of the buildings.

Rose garden
In the centre of the rose garden stands a drinking fountain which is surrounded by words, phrases and simple line drawings gathered from local children and adults to symbolise how they feel about the gardens. The images are pressed into blue engineering bricks, once used on the railway line that runs parallel to the gardens. The project was jointly funded by Cheltenham Borough Council, the Lower High Street Partnership and the Regional Arts Council.
Play area
The fenced play area with its woodland trail, living tree sculptures and spring bulbs has a variety of new play equipment. The play equipment was chosen by pupils from Gloucester Road Primary School and provides play facilities for a wider age range. New equipment includes a multi-activity unit, roundabout, inclusive play springie, swings, a pole spin and talk tubes.

Some might say that it was King George III who made Cheltenham the fashionable spa destination that it is today. He spent five weeks in the town to ˜take the waters' for its medicinal properties and as a result, several more Royal parties came to Cheltenham in the late 18th century, leading to the spa town's explosion in popularity.
As a result of the town's fame and reputation, Queens transformed itself into a hotel. First opening its doors on the 21st July 1838, and named in honour of Queen Victoria whose coronation fell in the same year, The Queens Hotel Cheltenham was born.
Throughout its illustrious history, The Queens Hotel Cheltenham welcomed eminent figures as General Sir Charles Napier, Edward Elgar and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It also served as a social refuge for women in WWI and as a military hospital.
ARCHITECTURE
Following its opening on 21st July 1838, the hotel was declared as ˜one of the noblest buildings of its kind in Europe'. The Queens Hotel Cheltenham is a stunning example of neo-classical architecture, with its imposing white façade of Roman temple scale, adorned by over 50 Corinthian columns, carved cornices and Georgian windows. Also, it is one of a number of imposing landmarks conceived by Robert Jearrad and his brother Charles, who modelled the hotel on the Temple of Jupiter in Rome.
Listed as a Grade II English Heritage building since 1955, it retains many of its original features, including historic wallpaper designed by Augustus Pugin, who masterminded the interior of the Palace of Westminster.

History
The station was opened on 12 May 1845 with the opening of the Kemble to Gloucester section of the Cheltenham and Great Western Union Railway, later part of the Great Western Railway. For a period between 1886 and 1947, when Stroud had two passenger railway stations, it was known as Stroud Great Western, Stroud Russell Street or Stroud Central. Stroud's second station, Stroud Wallbridge, was the terminus of a short branch line from the Midland Railway's Stonehouse and Nailsworth Railway, and freight services were always more important there than passengers.
In 1905, the Great Western Railway inaugurated a motor bus service between Stroud and Painswick, similar to systems in operation at other places such as Penzance and Slough. The services were operated by Mills Daimler vehicles with 22hp petrol engines, capable of carrying 22 passengers. The journey time was around 30 minutes

Following the granting of a charter to hold markets in 1594, the lord of the manor at Over Lypiatt, John Throckmorton, decided to commission a market hall
the new building was designed in the neoclassical style and completed in 1596. The original design involved a symmetrical main frontage with four bays facing onto the Market Place
it was arcaded on the ground floor to allow markets to be held
an assembly room with a large oriel window was established on the first floor.
The building was first used for municipal purposes as a meeting place for the local vestry in the early 19th century. It was extended to a design by Francis Niblett to accommodate the county court in 1851 and, after becoming the offices of the local board of health, it was remodelled in the gothic style with a large gable containing mullion windows erected above the two central bays in 1856. In order to improve the stability of the building, large buttresses, flanking the two central bays, were installed on the front of the building in 1890. After significant population growth, partly associated with the number of dye works in the town, the area became an urban district with the town hall as its headquarters in 1894.
Following an increase in the responsibilities of the council, civic leaders acquired the former offices of the Gloucester Banking Company in the High Street in 1930
the High Street building was converted for municipal use and was subsequently referred to as the Council Chambers. Although most council officers and their departments moved to the new Council Chambers in the High Street, some departments, including the technical services department, remained in the old building. The old town hall remained in municipal use even after the enlarged Stroud District Council was formed

the new building was designed in the neoclassical style and completed in 1596. The original design involved a symmetrical main frontage with four bays facing onto the Market Place

The building was first used for municipal purposes as a meeting place for the local vestry in the early 19th century. It was extended to a design by Francis Niblett to accommodate the county court in 1851 and, after becoming the offices of the local board of health, it was remodelled in the gothic style with a large gable containing mullion windows erected above the two central bays in 1856. In order to improve the stability of the building, large buttresses, flanking the two central bays, were installed on the front of the building in 1890. After significant population growth, partly associated with the number of dye works in the town, the area became an urban district with the town hall as its headquarters in 1894.
Following an increase in the responsibilities of the council, civic leaders acquired the former offices of the Gloucester Banking Company in the High Street in 1930
the High Street building was converted for municipal use and was subsequently referred to as the Council Chambers. Although most council officers and their departments moved to the new Council Chambers in the High Street, some departments, including the technical services department, remained in the old building. The old town hall remained in municipal use even after the enlarged Stroud District Council was formed

The first Express outlet was at the Markham Moor service station (A1 North), though only as an addition to the existing Little Chef menu there. Little Chef was a chain of restaurants in the United Kingdom, founded in 1958 by entrepreneur Sam Alper, who was inspired by American diners. The chain was famous for the Olympic Breakfast “ its version of a full English “ as well as its Early Starter and Jubilee Pancakes. The restaurants were mostly located on the roadside near A roads, often paired with a Travelodge motel, a Burger King and a petrol station. The chain was also located along motorways in Moto Services, for a time.
The chain expanded rapidly throughout the 1970s, and its parent company would acquire the Happy Eater chain in the 1980s, its only major roadside competitor. When its owners converted all Happy Eater restaurants to Little Chef in the late 1990s, this allowed it to peak in scale with 439 restaurants. Little Chef began to face decline in the early 2000s, this mainly due to the chain expanding too fast, meaning it could not properly invest in all of its locations. Compared to its peak in the late 1990s, by 2005 the chain had lost almost half of its locations.
In 2007, the chain entered administration, marking 41 out of 239 restaurants to close. This was followed by another closure programme in 2012 to reduce the chain to 94 restaurants. In early 2017, licence owners Kout Food Group sold the remaining 70 locations to Euro Garages, who would convert the restaurants into their partner franchises such as Starbucks, Subway and Greggs.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DD4GYY - The abbey was founded in 1246 by Richard, Earl of Cornwall, called King of the Romans and the younger brother of King Henry III of England. Richard founded the abbey to thank God after he had survived a shipwreck. Richard had been granted the manor of Hailes by King Henry, and settled it with Cistercian monks from Beaulieu Abbey in Hampshire. The great Cistercian abbey was entirely built in a single campaign in 1277, and was consecrated in a royal ceremony that included the King and Queen and 15 bishops.
Hailes Abbey became a site of pilgrimage after Richard's son Edmund donated to the Cistercian community a phial of the Holy Blood, purchased in Germany, in 1270. Such a relic of the Crucifixion was a considerable magnet for pilgrimage. From the proceeds, the monks of Hailes were able to rebuild the Abbey on a magnificent scale. One Abbot of Hailes was executed as a rebel after the Battle of Bramham Moor, in 1408.
Though King Henry VIII's commissioners declared the famous relic to be nothing but the blood of a duck, regularly renewed, and though the Abbot Stephen Sagar admitted that the Holy Blood was a fake in hope of saving the Abbey, Hailes Abbey was one of the last religious institutions to acquiesce following the Dissolution Act of 1536. The Abbot and his monks finally surrendered their abbey to Henry's commissioners on Christmas Eve 1539.
After the Dissolution, the west range consisting of the Abbot's own apartments was converted into a house and was home to the Tracy family in the seventeenth century, but these buildings were later demolished and now all that remains are a few low arches in a meadow with outlines in the grass. Surviving remains include the small church for the disappeared parish, with unrestored medieval wall-paintings
