Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KA3T15 - Stagecoach Gold is a luxury bus sub-brand used by various Stagecoach bus subsidiaries in the United Kingdom.
Stagecoach Gold (originally Goldline) was launched in 2007 and was designed to attract more middle-class passengers to choose bus travel as a method of transport as well as to reward passengers on some busy and popular routes.
Stagecoach West currently runs the most Stagecoach Gold routes, nine, as of August 2022. Stagecoach South Wales owns the largest number of Stagecoach Gold branded vehicles with 76 in its fleet as of November 2019
The Goldline brand was introduced to try to win more middle-class motorists to bus services. It was initially trialled in two areas, Perth and Warwick from November 2007, both on routes which received kick-start funding from the government to help establish the routes. Stagecoach East Scotland invested ?300,000 to demonstrate the idea to politicians.
Goldline routes have a luxury specification. Buses have hand-stitched leather seats, metallic paint, special flooring and free WiFi. Drivers wear special uniform and there is a Goldline customer charter
In February 2009 the service was expanded to Aldershot and in September 2009 to Cheltenham and Gloucester on route 94. At this stage the brand name changed from Goldline to Stagecoach Gold, as well as the introduction of a new livery with brighter swoops added, as opposed to the previous gold and blue only livery. The reason behind the name change was that Translink had the rights to the Goldline name, using it on their Ulsterbus coach services, and Stagecoach had to pay Translink a royalty
As of 2016, all brand new Stagecoach buses, including non-gold vehicles, come equipped with high back leather seats, USB charging facilities and many with free onboard Wi-Fi. Subsequently, this means that many of Stagecoach's new non-gold vehicles are now at the same specification as the Gold branded vehicles. As a result, some non-gold routes now have higher specification vehicles

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KEBJ2J - The Wilson, formerly known as Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum, in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, was opened in 1899. It offers free admission, and has a programme of special exhibitions. It was renamed The Wilson in honour of polar explorer Edward Wilson, a son of Cheltenham, in 2013 after the building was extended. The gallery and museum is managed by The Cheltenham Trust.
The museum is housed in part of a Regency building on Clarence Street (Cheltenham Library currently occupies much of the original building), designed as the Cheltenham Public Library by architect William Hill Knight, who also designed the Cheltenham Synagogue and Montpellier Walk.
In 2007 a national architectural design competition was launched by RIBA Competitions to extend the building, providing more space for the renowned Arts and Crafts collection. Through this process Berman Guedes Stretton were selected by Cheltenham Borough Council and the extension was completed in 2012.
Baron de Ferrieres, a former Mayor and Liberal MP for Cheltenham, gave 43 important paintings, mostly from Belgium and the Netherlands, to the town. He also donated ?1,000 towards the building of a gallery in which to display them. The Museum was opened in 1907 in the adjacent former Schools of Art and Science. A major extension to the building by Hugh Casson was opened by the Princess Royal in September 1989, where the main entrance to the gallery is now situated.
The museum is particularly noted for its Arts and Crafts collection of furniture, textiles, ceramics, carvings, silver and jewellery which is recognised as an outstanding collection of international importance for which the Art Gallery & Museum has received Designated status.
Cheltenham's history is well represented, and in addition there are paintings spanning four centuries, oriental collections of pottery and costume, and archaeological treasures from the neighbouring Cotswolds.

Cheltenham stands on the small River Chelt, which rises nearby at Dowdeswell and runs through the town on its way to the Severn. It was first recorded in 803, as Celtan hom
the meaning has not been resolved with certainty, but latest scholarship concludes that the first element preserves a pre-British noun cilta, 'steep hill', here referring to the Cotswold scarp

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K6HJFR - Gloucester Services are a pair of Motorway Service Areas (MSA) serving the northbound and southbound carriageways of the M5 between Junction 11A and Junction 12, near Whaddon, Gloucester. It specialises in selling artisanal food, and does not offer outlets for popular chain food brands.
Construction of the northbound services began in early 2013, and they officially opened on 7 May 2014. Construction of the southbound services commenced in March 2014 and they opened on 19 May 2015
In September 2009, the independent motorway services operator Westmorland Motorway Services Ltd, jointly with a local charitable trust, Gloucestershire Gateway Trust, submitted plans for a service area at Matson for public consultation. The plans were for a business operated in a similar manner to Tebay Services on the M6 in Cumbria, with much of the food and produce on sale being sourced from local suppliers
The operator promised not to host chain coffee shops, fast-food outlets, or video and gambling machines
The service area supports the Gloucestershire Gateway Trust in assisting the business to provide good jobs for more deprived areas of Gloucester, and to support local social regeneration schemes.
The 2019 Motorway Services User Survey found that Gloucester's southbound side was in the top five motorway services in the UK for customer satisfaction
The District Council was informed at the end of February 2011 that Roadchef and Welcome Break (the operators of Strensham and Michaelwood service stations) had applied to the High Court for a judicial review of the Council's decision to grant planning permission. Joined in the action were CAMSA and the Parish Councils of Brookthorpe-with-Whaddon and Harescombe. The case was heard in the High Court in Birmingham on 17 and 18 January 2012. By 8 February 2012, the High Court had dismissed all challenges to the planning application
One of the factors that helped the development gain planning permission was the inclusion of a green roof

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M6W9FR - Dr Edward Jenner (1749-1823), native of Berkeley, Gloucestershire, he was an early pioneer of vaccination whose most spectacular achievement was to eradicate smallpox, which had until that time been a widespread and seriously devastating disease. He has a museum dedicated to him at his former home in Berkeley, and their website has lots of interesting information about his life and work. Although his birthplace was always where his heart was, and his pioneering work also led him to establish medical practices in London, he spent some 25 years living during the summer season in Cheltenham, where he owned a house (later two houses and a garden) in St George's Place. It was from this house that the smallpox vaccine was sent out around the world ? and such was Jenner's humanitarian spirit he administered it free of charge to the poor. The narrow street was frequently crowded with up to 300 people a day clamouring for his services
Jenner didn't keep all of the garden to himself, however. In 1809 the Rev. Rowland Hill, a close friend of Jenner's, built the Cheltenham Chapel on land adjoining the edge of the garden. Built to relieve the overcrowding of the parish church and other local chapels during the town's rapid expansion years, the new chapel was non-denominational and hosted services of pretty much any kind ? only the Unitarians were banned. Designed by Edward Smith, it was described at the time as plain, neat and commodious and contained 1000 seats. A year later the chapel's trustees bought the bottom end of Dr Jenner's garden for ?450 for use as a burial ground, and an access lane was made across the garden to link the chapel with St George's Place directly opposite Jenner House. Jenner and Hill took a close interest in each other's work, and a vaccination clinic was held in the chapel every Sunday after the religious service

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M6W9G7 - Withdrawing the bus is withdrawing my independence' - residents speak out on Stagecoach bus cuts
A Gloucestershire bus route has officially been axed despite more than 600 people signing a petition to save it. Back in October 2022, Stagecoach said they would scrap a dozen routes across the county including the E bus which allows residents in the village of Woodmancote to travel into Bishop's Cleeve and Cheltenham.
In a notice posted at the main village bus stop, Stagecoach say: We regret that due to low passenger numbers, Service E will no longer run, and this bus stop will no longer be served by Stagecoach. For alternative travel, Stagecoach Service D buses will continue to run between Bishops Cleeve (Mill Parade), Cheltenham Town Centre and Hatherley with departures up to every 20-minutes, 7-days a week.
Fears rural people will become 'prisoners in their own homes' due to Gloucestershire bus cuts
'Not having a bus means they are literally imprisoned in their own homes, unable to walk or cycle because they are too old or too young or because it's so dangerous'
Rural Gloucestershire residents who rely on public transport are going to become prisoners in their own homes due to recently announced bus cuts. This is the view of Forest of Dean Councillor Chris McFarling (G, Sedbury) who raised several concerns at a Shire Hall meeting this week where transport chiefs gave an update on the situation affecting buses.
He thanked the cabinet member and officers for being honest about the problem they face after Stagecoach decided to withdraw from several routes due to a shortage of drivers. Cllr McFarling described the reality many bus users face across the county with buses simply not turning up or people being left stranded when their return journey is cancelled.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M6W9G9 - Marks and Spencer Group plc (commonly abbreviated to M&S and colloquially known as Marks's or Marks & Sparks) is a major British multinational retailer with headquarters in Paddington, London that specialises in selling clothing, beauty, home products and food products. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index
it had previously been in the FTSE 100 Index from its creation until 2019.
M&S was founded in 1884 by Michael Marks and Thomas Spencer in Leeds. M&S currently has 959 stores across the UK, including 615 that only sell food products and through its television advertising, asserts the exclusive nature and luxury of its food and beverages. It also offers an online food delivery service through a joint venture with Ocado.
In 1998, the company became the first British retailer to make a pre-tax profit of over ?1 billion, although it then went into a sudden slump taking the company and its stakeholders by surprise. In November 2009, it was announced that Marc Bolland, formerly of Morrisons, would take over as chief executive from executive chairman Sir Stuart Rose in early 2010
Rose remained executive chairman until July 2010 and then chairman until January 2011, when he was replaced by Robert Swannell. In recent years, its clothing sales have fallen, whilst food sales have increased, after axing the St. Michael moniker for its own brand. The company also began to sell branded goods such as Kellogg's Corn Flakes in November 2008.
On 22 May 2018, it was confirmed that over 100 stores will have closed by 2022 in a radical plan. On 18 August 2020, M&S stated that they would cut 7,000 jobs over the next three months owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. In May 2021, the company announced plans to close another 30 shops over the next 10 years as part of its turnaround plan

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M6W9GB - Everyman Theatre is a theatre based in Regent Street, Cheltenham. There are two auditoria in the building - the 675 seat main auditorium and the 60 seat Studio Theatre, originally named The Ralph Richardson Studio after Ralph Richardson.
The Grade II listed building was designed by Frank Matcham and was originally called The New Theatre and Opera House. It was opened on 1 October 1891 with a performance by Lilly Langtry
In 1929, the New Theatre and Opera House gained a licence to screen projected film, becoming a multi-purpose theatre and cinema. The licence stipulated that the building must continue to present live performance as well as cinema.
In World War II, the theatre became a Garrison Theatre, to civilians and the US soldiers based at Pittville. Many actors from London left the capital to escape the Blitz, bringing big names to Cheltenham.
The Cheltenham Corporation ran the building after World War II until 1960. In 1959 the building closed and was at risk of being sold. The Cheltenham Theatre Association published an advertisement in September 1959 advertising Urgent - Wanted ?3,000 at once, to re-open Cheltenham Opera House.
In May 1960, the Cheltenham Theatre Association published another advertisement titled Great News, which announced that the Everyman Theatre would open on Monday 22 May 1960 with a world premiere presentation of N.C. Hunter's A Piece of Silver, starring Joyce Heron and Esmond Knight. The Cheltenham Theatre Association rebranded itself as the Everyman Theatre Association (ETA). It enjoyed booking advantages and raised money for the Theatre. Its 50th anniversary in 2010 was a great success
sadly, Covid lockdown prevented the 60th. Members enjoyed a variety of social activities, but, even before lockdown, support diminished and the ETA was wound up in late 2021. The benefits transferred to a new Priority Access Membership scheme administered directly by the theatre.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M6W9GP - Cheltenham owes much to its Regency roots, which were pivotal in assuring its growth from a Medieval Manor village, to the Town it is today. A visit by King George III secured Cheltenham's reputation as a fashionable place to be seen, and this popularity contributed to its rapid growth during the Regency Period. This short and extensive expansion period has given our Town an abundance of Regency buildings, and has earned us our place as Britain's most complete Regency Town.
As a style, Regency Architecture started popping up in the late 1700's, pioneered by Scottish Architect Robert Adam, and continued even after King George IV's untimely death, well into the 1840's. It is strictly attributed to late Georgian architecture and is typified by a renaissance of neoclassicism, which drew inspiration from the Ancient Greeks and Romans, featuring Ionic Porticos and fluted columns galore. Anyone taking a casual stroll around Cheltenham will easily spot these ancient influences, which adorn many buildings in the Town. Regency Style was also used to describe the decorative arts of the interior design including block printed, or striped wallpaper, as well as the fashion of the time including the famous Empire silhouette. Pop along to the Holst Birthplace Museum to see a perfectly preserved interior from the period.
Much of Cheltenham's iconic architecture was built during the Regency and subsequent Reign of King George IV between 1811 and 1830. Unlike many other periods of architecture, Regency was not about strict building rules, and was instead more a set of 'guidelines' for the design of the buildings.
For example, many modern Cheltenham homes reside in plain, elegant Regency buildings, particularly around Tivoli, The Suffolks and Bath Road. These Regency gems often appear flat roofed (but look closely they aren't) and have a flat vertical fa??ade, string course (a horizontal line in relief between floors) and are finished in stucco with multi-paned sash windows.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M6W9JW - Cheltenham Borough Council is the local authority for Cheltenham, which is split into 20 wards, with a total of 40 councillors elected to serve on the borough council. Since 2002, elections have been held every two years with half of the councillors elected at each election. Following the last election in 2022, there were 31 Liberal Democrat members, 6 Conservatives, 2 representing the People Against Bureaucracy group, and 1 from the Green Party, a historical first. On 5 June 2022, Liberal Democrat councillor Wendy Flynn defected to the Green Party. In September 2022, the mayor, councillor Sandra Holliday, was suspended from the Liberal Democrats for 12 months for bullying. She remains in post but non aligned.
History
The district was formed on 1 April 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, and was redrawn in 1991 with the addition of the areas of Leckhampton, Up Hatherley and Prestbury

The figure of Neptune was based on local labourer Dick Saunders. The fountain is symbolic of the importance of water in the development of the town of Cheltenham. The fountain draws water from the River Chelt which flows below the fountain through a large culvert.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M6W9K0 - In 1809, Henry Thompson constructed a wooden pavilion with a colonnade as part of the wider development of the Montpellier Spa on land previously known as Trafalgar Field.[3] By 1817 it had been rebuilt in stone as the Montpellier Spa became increasingly popular. Thompson employed the architect George Allen Underwood, who completed the building with a statue of a crouching lion on the parapet.
In 1826, Henry Thompson's son Pearson Thompson asked John Buonarotti Papworth to oversee the project and it was during this period that the dome was erected. The dome is inspired by Rome's Pantheon and has almost identical proportions.[5][4] The building was used as a pumproom, with water from local wells, and ballroom with an additional billiard room and reading room.
Concerts were held in the building including Jenny Lind in 1848 and the first performance of a Scherzo by local composer Gustav Holst in 1891.
The Spa and surrounding gardens were purchased by the Cheltenham Borough Council in 1893.[3] The building was designated as a Grade I listed building in 1955. During the 1960s the council and Lloyds Bank undertook restoration work.[3]
The Rotunda building when it housed a branch of Lloyds Bank
Since 2017 it has housed a restaurant belonging to the Ivy Collection, a group of UK restaurants, who undertook restoration work.
Architecture
The building has limestone walls with a copper roof. The front of the building has a colonnade of doric columns, a frieze of alternating square and rectangular panels and a parapet. The central wooden dome in the assembly room is coffered internally and has light entering via the lantern in the centre. The room is 56 feet (17 m) high and 54 feet (16 m) across

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M6YFEM - Winston Churchill Memorial Garden is a small urban park discreetly tucked behind the Lower High Street shops. The gardens have a number of historical elements such as the formal rose garden, pergola, clipped yew avenue and St Mary's Mission building. It is still possible to see some of the headstones along the northern perimeter wall. Find out more about the history of the park.
Rose garden
In the centre of the rose garden stands a drinking fountain which is surrounded by words, phrases and simple line drawings gathered from local children and adults to symbolise how they feel about the gardens. The images are pressed into blue engineering bricks, once used on the railway line that runs parallel to the gardens. The project was jointly funded by Cheltenham Borough Council, the Lower High Street Partnership and the Regional Arts Council.
Play area
The fenced play area with its woodland trail, living tree sculptures and spring bulbs has a variety of new play equipment. The play equipment was chosen by pupils from Gloucester Road Primary School and provides play facilities for a wider age range. New equipment includes a multi-activity unit, roundabout, inclusive play springie, swings, a pole spin and talk tubes.
Informal recreational area
The area south of the play area is used for informal recreation. The eastern boundary has been planted with native dog rose and wild flowers to enhance the urban park for wildlife and people alike.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M6YFFF - Wild Drawing 3D street art adorns Cheltenham Midland hotel wall.
An Indonesian street artist has completed a huge painting on the side of a Cheltenham hotel.
The mural depicts the French cartoonist and writer Moebeus, and was painted by the artist Wild Drawing, otherwise known as WD.
Originally from Bali, he hides his true identity and paints all over the world, specialising in 3D designs.
His work on the side of the Midland Hotel is believed to be the first artwork he has created in the UK.
The new artwork took 10 days to create and was produced by the Athens-based artist as part of the Cheltenham Paint Festival, which takes place every September.
It was due to have been finished earlier, but was finally completed last week after delays due to bad weather.
Festival director Andrew Davies said WD used a mini-roller on the end of a 4m (13ft)-long pole to sketch out the painting.
He learned to do this in his native Bali when starting out as he didn't have the money available for lifts etc, and has carried on ever since, he said.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M7JH3T - The Pittville Pump Room was the last and largest of the spa buildings to be built in Cheltenham.
The benefits of Cheltenham's mineral waters had been recognised since 1716, but not until after the arrival of Henry Skillicorne in 1738 did serious exploitation of their potential as an attraction begin. After the visit to Cheltenham in 1788 of King George III, the town became increasingly fashionable, and wells were opened up at several points round the town. Pittville, the vision of Joseph Pitt, was a planned 'new town' development of the 1820s, in which the centre-piece was (and remains) a pump-room where the waters of one of the more northerly wells could be taken.
The Pump
The Pump Room was built by the architect John Forbes between 1825 and 1830. It is a Grade I listed building standing at the northern end of Pittville Lawn with landscaped grounds running down to a lake. The building contains the original Pump, made of marble and scagliola, to which the waters are today fed by electric pumping.
The building has a colonnade of Ionic columns
the interior houses a ballroom on its ground floor. Further Ionic columns support a gallery under a dome from which music might be played
on upper floors there were a billiard room, library and reading room. Above the colonnade are three statues, by Lucius Gahagen, erected in 1827, of the goddess Hygieia, Aesculapius and Hippocrates.
The Pump Room and its grounds were managed during the 19th century by a succession of lessees, who offered the typical fare of pleasure gardens including menageries, exhibitions and balloon ascents. However the concession did not prove lucrative. Eventually Pitt himself went bankrupt and in 1890 the Room and the grounds passed into the ownership of the town council.
They are now part of The Cheltenham Trust, a charity which also manages the Cheltenham Town Hall, the Wilson Art Gallery & Museum, the Prince of Wales Stadium and Leisure @ - plus the town's Tourist Information Centre

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M7JH9E - Opened in 1825, Pittville Park is the largest ornamental park in Cheltenham and features the magnificent Pump Room and lakes. This park is given a grade 2 listing under the English Heritage register of historic parks and gardens, with the Pump Room as a grade 1 historic building.
Pittville Park won it's first Green Flag Award and Green Heritage Accredition in 2016 and still flies the flag.
Pittville Park is divided in two by Evesham Road. Most people are familiar with the eastern side of the park, which is overlooked by Pittville Pump Room, and home to the main children's play area and the aviaries where you'll find our popular birds and bunnies. However, to the west of Evesham Road lies the much larger western park with its more natural layout and small areas of woodland. Here you will find the larger 'lower lake' where you can fish during the fishing season, and there is a smaller children's play area along with tennis courts, a pitch and putt golf course and a skate park.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55JNF - One of the first purpose-built hotels in Europe, The Queens Hotel was built on the site of the original Sherborne Spa, and became used as suitable accommodation for the nobility and royalty who visited Cheltenham to restore, renew and revive.
Some might say that it was King George III who made Cheltenham the fashionable spa destination that it is today. He spent five weeks in the town to ?take the waters' for its medicinal properties and as a result, several more Royal parties came to Cheltenham in the late 18th century, leading to the spa town's explosion in popularity.
As a result of the town's fame and reputation, Queens transformed itself into a hotel. First opening its doors on the 21st July 1838, and named in honour of Queen Victoria whose coronation fell in the same year, The Queens Hotel Cheltenham was born.
Throughout its illustrious history, The Queens Hotel Cheltenham welcomed eminent figures as General Sir Charles Napier, Edward Elgar and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It also served as a social refuge for women in WWI and as a military hospital.
ARCHITECTURE
Following its opening on 21st July 1838, the hotel was declared as ?one of the noblest buildings of its kind in Europe'. The Queens Hotel Cheltenham is a stunning example of neo-classical architecture, with its imposing white fa??ade of Roman temple scale, adorned by over 50 Corinthian columns, carved cornices and Georgian windows. Also, it is one of a number of imposing landmarks conceived by Robert Jearrad and his brother Charles, who modelled the hotel on the Temple of Jupiter in Rome.
Listed as a Grade II English Heritage building since 1955, it retains many of its original features, including historic wallpaper designed by Augustus Pugin, who masterminded the interior of the Palace of Westminster.
In recent times the hotel has since been restored to its former neoclassical glory, revitalizing and reimagining the building's original comforts with the latest technologies,

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRJ9TG - Blackpool Tower is a tourist attraction in Blackpool, Lancashire, England, which was opened to the public on 14 May 1894. When it opened, Blackpool Tower was the tallest man made structure in the British Empire. Inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris, it is 518 feet (158 metres) tall and is the 125th-tallest freestanding tower in the world. Blackpool Tower is also the common name for the Tower Buildings, an entertainment complex in a red-brick three-storey block that comprises the tower, Tower Circus, the Tower Ballroom, and roof gardens, which was designated a Grade I listed building in 1973.
Background
The Blackpool Tower Company was founded by London-based Standard Contract & Debenture Corporation in 1890
it bought an aquarium on Central Promenade with the intention of building a replica Eiffel Tower on the site. John Bickerstaffe, a former mayor of Blackpool, was asked to become chairman of the new company, and its shares went on sale in July 1891. The Standard Corporation kept 30,000 ?1 shares and offered ?150,000 worth of shares to the public
initially only two-thirds were taken up, forcing the company to ask for more cash contributions from its existing shareholders, but the poor financial situation of the company, exacerbated by the falling share price, rendered it unable to pay. Bickerstaffe, to avoid the potential collapse of the venture, bought any available shares until his original holding of ?500 amounted to ?20,000. He also released the Standard Corporation from its share commitments. When the Tower opened in 1894, its success justified the investment of nearly ?300,000, and the company made a ?30,000 profit in 1896.
Two Lancashire architects, James Maxwell and Charles Tuke, designed the tower and oversaw the laying of its foundation stone on 29 September 1891. By the time the Tower finally opened on 14 May 1894, both men had died. Heenan & Froude, then of Manchester, were appointed structural engineers, supplying and constructing both the tower,

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JMA8C2 - Stroud railway station is a railway station that serves the town of Stroud in Gloucestershire, England. Stroud railway station (on the Gloucester?Swindon Golden Valley Line) was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
History
The station was opened on 12 May 1845 with the opening of the Kemble to Gloucester section of the Cheltenham and Great Western Union Railway, later part of the Great Western Railway. For a period between 1886 and 1947, when Stroud had two passenger railway stations, it was known as Stroud Great Western, Stroud Russell Street or Stroud Central. Stroud's second station, Stroud Wallbridge, was the terminus of a short branch line from the Midland Railway's Stonehouse and Nailsworth Railway, and freight services were always more important there than passengers.
In 1905, the Great Western Railway inaugurated a motor bus service between Stroud and Painswick, similar to systems in operation at other places such as Penzance and Slough. The services were operated by Mills Daimler vehicles with 22hp petrol engines, capable of carrying 22 passengers. The journey time was around 30 minutes

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JMA8E1 - Situated between the town of Stroud and the village of Chalford, Brimscombe Port is a stunning location at the foot of the Cotswold escarpment, next to the River Frome and Thames and Severn Canal.
Brimscombe Port started life in 1779 and became a key transfer point for sea-going barges to narrow boats accommodating some 100 vessels at its height. Sadly the canal and basin were filled in after the Second World War. The canal headquarters, which then became a school, was demolished as part of road straightening in the 1960s. The Port took on a new lease of life as an industrial estate, becoming home to a number businesses, including the family run ring binder company Benson & Sons. Sadly, as businesses moved out of the site, it started to fall into disrepair.
Recently, the Port was a temporary home to a number of Community Interest Companies whilst viability for the site was assessed and funding was secured.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JMD5KY - Built in 1931 by William Leah, this is a stone Art Deco building, now let as separate
shops, which was formerly the Stroud Co-op department store. Once inside the front door,
customers would walk up through the different departments. The main double door is now
replaced by the separate doors into the Black Book caf?? and the launderette, with a
narrow blank panel in between. The windows up both Nelson St and Parliament St have
the original lights and pull-down awnings (still working).
The square, Art Deco, rendered panel (?1931') is as it was originally. The signage (Soap &
Suds, etc) is modern but in a font in keeping with the age of the building.
Unit 6, originally the butcher's department of the Co-op and now a tattoo parlour ? has a
set-back doorway (the others in the block flush) but no awning like the others. At the back
of the shop are the original butcher's rails. The plate glass is the original Co-op shop
glass.
In Unit 4, originally the cooked meats department with uphill neighbour Hong Kong
takeaway and now R&R books, the central black and white tiled flooring is original.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JMD5NK - HISTORY: The police station, formerly Willow House, was built in Badbrook, on the rural edge of Stroud, probably in the early C18. Willow House was converted to a police station in 1858 to the designs of James Medland of Gloucester (the County Surveyor between 1857 and 1889). Medland designed most of the county's eleven purpose-built courts and police stations constructed between the 1860s and 1880s. Extensions to Stroud police station, designed by Medland, were carried out in 1885-6 when a cell block, stables and an office block to the north-west of the station were built. The office block was converted to a Petty Sessional Court in 1908 by Robert Phillips, architect to the Gloucestershire Education Committee. Other extensions and alterations were also carried out in the C20. The police station (now called Willow Court) and the stabling behind (now called Willow House) were converted to business use in the late C20. The court became the Liberal Club, until the early C21.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JMD5R4 - The Old Town Hall is a municipal building in The Shambles, Stroud, Gloucestershire, England. The town hall, which was the headquarters of Stroud Urban District Council, is a Grade II* listed building.
Following the granting of a charter to hold markets in 1594, the lord of the manor at Over Lypiatt, John Throckmorton, decided to commission a market hall
the new building was designed in the neoclassical style and completed in 1596. The original design involved a symmetrical main frontage with four bays facing onto the Market Place
it was arcaded on the ground floor to allow markets to be held
an assembly room with a large oriel window was established on the first floor.
The building was first used for municipal purposes as a meeting place for the local vestry in the early 19th century. It was extended to a design by Francis Niblett to accommodate the county court in 1851 and, after becoming the offices of the local board of health, it was remodelled in the gothic style with a large gable containing mullion windows erected above the two central bays in 1856. In order to improve the stability of the building, large buttresses, flanking the two central bays, were installed on the front of the building in 1890. After significant population growth, partly associated with the number of dye works in the town, the area became an urban district with the town hall as its headquarters in 1894.
Following an increase in the responsibilities of the council, civic leaders acquired the former offices of the Gloucester Banking Company in the High Street in 1930
the High Street building was converted for municipal use and was subsequently referred to as the Council Chambers. Although most council officers and their departments moved to the new Council Chambers in the High Street, some departments, including the technical services department, remained in the old building. The old town hall remained in municipal use even after the enlarged Stroud District Council was formed

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JMD5TG - The Old Town Hall is a municipal building in The Shambles, Stroud, Gloucestershire, England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JMD5W3 - IN A WAY Stroud's Four Clocks share the blame for the county's shortage of hospital beds.
When philanthropist and businessman William Thomas Sims willed ?1,000 to the town to provide an illuminated clock in 1917 he made a proviso.
If the Stroud Urban District Council did not want the clock, the money would go : ...unto the trustees of Gloucestershire Royal Infirmary at Gloucester for the purpose of endowing a bed therein and otherwise for the benefit of the institution.
The wealthy Mr Sims also left ?2,000 to be invested into a trust fund which would provide Christmas dinners for Stroud's poor.
Though Mr Sims died on June 29, 1917 at the age of 79 the clock was not finished for almost four years.
The Stroud Journal recorded the completion of the 'imposing' structure in February, 1921
It is generally admitted that the tower is a very handsome addition to the architecture of the town, it reads.
The clock is meeting a long felt want in the town.
In the late 19th century William Sims owned a grocery, wine and spirit merchants in the High Street in the building which is now the TSB bank.
A fact that the obituaries curiously neglect to mention is that he also ran a lower class of Victorian off-licence, the ale and porter store, in Russell Street as a side line.
He was a widower and his only child died well before Mr Sims himself so he was left with no close family to whom he could pass on his possessions and considerable fortune.
During his life he was an active member of the community and something of a civic leader, signing up for duties with many worthy causes.
A councillor on two separate councils and member of the town's Board of Guardians, the Local Board of Health and Painswick School Board he certainly kept himself busy and was well known as a nonconformist Liberal and protector of the poor.
He retired around the turn of the century and left Stroud to live out his days as a country gent somewhere in the Forest of Dean.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNTN - This image shows a plug-in hybrid vehicle connected to a Pod Point electric vehicle charging unit in the car park of a Lidl supermarket in Stroud, Gloucestershire. The charger is part of the growing network of public EV and hybrid charging infrastructure installed at UK retail locations to support the transition away from petrol and diesel vehicles.
Supermarket-based charging points allow drivers to recharge while shopping, reflecting the integration of electric vehicle technology into everyday life. Pod Point is one of the UK's major charging-network providers, and its presence at Lidl stores highlights the role of large retailers in supporting sustainable transport and lower-carbon travel.
The image is suitable for editorial and commercial use covering electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, green technology, retail infrastructure, sustainability, climate policy, and the UK's EV transition, as well as consumer behaviour and modern mobility.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNBXKK - Moreton-in-Marsh is a market town in the Evenlode Valley, within the Cotswolds district and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Gloucestershire, England.
The town stands at the crossroads of the Fosse Way Roman road (now the A429) and the A44. It is served by Moreton-in-Marsh railway station on the Cotswold Line. It is relatively flat and low-lying compared with the surrounding Cotswold Hills. The River Evenlode rises near Batsford, runs around the edge of Moreton and meanders towards Oxford, where it flows into the Thames just east of Eynsham.
Just over 2 miles (3.2 km) east of Moreton, the Four shire stone marked the boundary of the historic counties of Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Oxfordshire, until the re-organisation of the county boundaries in 1931. Since then it marks the meeting place of Gloucestershire, Warwickshire and Oxfordshire.
Moreton-in-Marsh railway station on the Cotswold Line.
Moreton is derived from Old English which means Farmstead on the Moor and in Marsh is from henne and mersh meaning a marsh used by birds such as moorhens. An alternative suggestion is that 'Marsh' is a corruption of 'March', early English for boundary
Each September the town hosts the UK's largest one-day agricultural show. Held on part of the Batsford Estate, the show has been running since 1949.
Rail services to/from Moreton-in-Marsh station are provided by Great Western Railway. The fastest direct trains from London Paddington station take around 90 minutes. Since the opening of Worcestershire Parkway railway station in 2020 the fastest journey times from Birmingham have been cut to around 75 minutes

Hobbits, Tolkien & The Bell Inn Moreton-in-Marsh ? Did this Cotswold's Pub Inspire Bree's Prancing Pony
If you have ever felt like escaping to Tolkien's Legendarium of Middle Earth, then you only need to pop over to the Cotswolds in the UK!
It's highly considered that The Bell Inn Moreton-in-Marsh was the inspiration for The Prancing Pony in the town of Bree. This is one of Middle Earth's most popular pubs featured in the Lord of the Rings!
What is The Bell Inn Moreton-in-Marsh and Tolkien Connection?
Of course, it's commonly known that J. R. R. Tolkien was a resident and academic at Oxford. As a professor of English Language and Literature, he would tutor students at both Pembroke and Merton College.
Tolkien's brother lived in Evesham. A small market town in Worcestershire that was the ancestral home to Tolkien's mother, Mabel Suffield.
Unlike his brother, Hilary Tolkien had an interest in agriculture over academia! So, he bought a small orchard and market garden on the outskirts of Evesham in 1922.
J. R. R. Tolkien and his family visited his farm and stayed many times. According to him, ?Worcestershire was more like home than any other part of the world'.
On many occasions, while he was an academic at Oxford, Tolkien would arrange to meet his brother Hilary in Moreton-in-Marsh.
It was the perfect meeting point as it was located halfway between the homes of the two Tolkien brothers!
They would meet up at The Bell Inn Moreton-in-Marsh and have a lengthy catch-up over a pint in a tiny corner of the pub.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNBXP4 - Redesdale Hall, also referred to as Moreton-in-Marsh Town Hall, is a municipal building in the High Street, Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire, England. The building, which is used as an events venue, is a Grade II listed building
The opportunity to replace an old 18th century market hall, which had become dilapidated, arose following the death of the writer of religious polemics, John Freeman-Mitford, 1st Earl of Redesdale, in 1886. The earl, who had died unmarried, left all his estates to his distant cousin, Algernon Freeman-Mitford, who duly became lord of the manor and decided to erect a new building, in memory of his generous cousin, for benefit of the inhabitants of the town. It was designed by Sir Ernest George and Harold Peto in the Free Tudor style, built by Peto Brothers of Pimlico in ashlar stone and was officially opened by the Minister without Portfolio, Sir Michael Hicks Beach, on 2 December 1887.
The design involved a near-symmetrical main frontage with six bays facing east down Oxford Street
the ground floor was arcaded, although never used as a market hall as such. On the first floor, the first bay was blind
the second, third and fifth bays were fenestrated by four-light mullioned windows
the fourth bay featured a sundial which was surmounted by a chimney stack, while the sixth bay was fenestrated by a single mullioned window. The south elevation featured a panel containing the Redesdale coat of arms. The north and south elevations were fenestrated by pairs of two-light mullioned windows, reaching up into the gables, while the west elevation was fenestrated by a series of four-light mullioned windows. There were buttresses at the corners of the building and, at roof level, there was a square clock tower surmounted by a crown steeple. Internally, the principal room was the assembly hall on the first floor with featured stained glass windows depicting the coats of arms of Algernon Freeman-Mitford and his wife, Clementina

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNBY89 - Chipping Campden is a market town in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England. It is notable for its terraced High Street, dating from the 14th century to the 17th century. (Chipping is from Old English c?ping, 'market', 'market-place'
the same element is found in other towns such as Chipping Norton, Chipping Sodbury and Chipping (now High) Wycombe.)
A wool trading centre in the Middle Ages, Chipping Campden enjoyed the patronage of wealthy wool merchants, most notably William Greville (d.1401). The High Street is lined with buildings built from locally quarried oolitic limestone known as Cotswold stone, and boasts a wealth of vernacular architecture. Much of the town centre is a conservation area which has helped to preserve the original buildings. The town is an end point of the Cotswold Way, a 102-mile long-distance footpath.
Chipping Campden has hosted its own Olympic Games since 1612.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNBYAC - By 1881, the third Earl, Charles William Francis Noel, had succeeded his father and the same year he donated land at the junction of Cow Fair and Back Ends for the building of a church on the site of an old barn. Including a generous donation from the Earl and his wife, the cost of the church was met by community donations and fundraising that included a weekly lottery and penny readings in the Noel Arms.
The church was designed by the architect W. Lunn of Malvern and the opening ceremony was performed in September 1891. The church is built of local stone in the early Perpendicular style that prevailed in the reigns of Henry IV and V, harmonising with other ancient buildings in the town.
Dedicated to St. Catharine, the church consists of a nave, aisles, chancel and transept, with a sacristy and outer sacristy and a fine bell turret surmounting the south transept. The High Altar was the work of sculptor A. N. Wall of Cheltenham. On the right-hand side of the chancel are three Sedalia let into the wall, carved in stone.
The nave is sixty-five feet in length with a total height of forty feet. Between this and the north aisle is a beautiful arcade of four arches with eight windows in the clerestory above. The nave roof is composed entirely of red deal and is of very beautiful construction, the beams being ornamented with fine carvery and tracing. That of the chancery is of English oak, unpolished and arranged in panels and enhanced by some richly carved oak tracery covering the wall plate at the base. The church seats approximately 250 people in deal pews

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPB8XK - Bliss Tweed Mill is a former mill for the manufacture of tweed. It is located on the edge of Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, UK. It became a Grade II* listed building in 1980.
The mill was built in 1872 for cloth manufacturer William Bliss, to make fine tweed cloth from locally produced wool. It was designed by the architect George Woodhouse of Bolton, who also designed mills in Lancashire, including Victoria Mill in Miles Platting
Woodhouse was also involved in the construction of Bolton Town Hall.
The main 5-storey spinning building is faced with local limestone and styled to resemble a country house, with square towers at each corner topped by stone urns. Unusually, a large chimney for the furnace to power the mill's steam machinery issues from a dome at the top of a circular tower built into one fa??ade. The chimneystack is styled as a tall Tuscan column. Inside, the building is supported by cast iron columns that carry beams bearing brick vaults. An adjacent lower building was used for weaving the tweed cloth.
The millworkers went on strike for eight months from December 1913 to June 1914, over the right of workers to join a trades union, but the mill prospered in the First World War after receiving a large order for khaki cloth for the British Army.
The mill closed in 1980 and was converted into residential apartments in around 1988

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07AD9 - Hereford Cathedral is the cathedral church of the Anglican Diocese of Hereford in Hereford, England.
A place of worship has existed on the site of the present building since the 8th century or earlier. The present building was begun in 1079. Substantial parts of the building date from both the Norman and the Gothic periods. The cathedral is a Grade I listed building.
The cathedral has the largest library of chained book in the world, its most famous treasure being the Mappa Mundi, a medieval map of the world created around 1300 by Richard of Holdingham. The map is listed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.
The cathedral is dedicated to two saints, St Mary the Virgin and St Ethelbert the King. The latter was beheaded by Offa, King of Mercia in the year 794
Before this, Hereford had become the seat of a bishopric. It is said to have been the centre of a diocese as early as the 670s when Theodore of Tarsus, Archbishop of Canterbury, divided the Mercian diocese of Lichfield, founding Hereford for the Magons??te and Worcester for the Hwicce. In the 7th century the cathedral was refounded by Putta
Between the years 1226 and 1246, Lady Chapel was rebuilt in the Early English style?with a crypt beneath. Around the middle of the century the clerestory, and probably the vaulting of the choir, were rebuilt, having been damaged by the settling of the central tower
In the first half of the 14th century the rebuilding of the central tower, which is embellished with ball-flower ornaments, was carried out. At about the same time the chapter house and its vestibule were built, then Thomas Trevenant, who was bishop from 1389 to 1404, rebuilt the south end and groining of the great transept.
In 1841 the restoration work was begun, instigated by Dean Merewether, and was carried out by Lewis Nockalls Cottingham and his son, Nockalls.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A4PJMR - Get ready for Brexit' advertising campaign launches
An information campaign urging the public to get ready for Brexit has been launched by the government.
The campaign began on Sunday with the launch of a website, gov.uk/brexit.
Billboards and social media adverts will appear in the coming days and TV adverts will air later this month.
Michael Gove, who is in charge of no-deal plans, said the adverts encourage shared responsibility for preparing to leave the EU on 31 October.
It has been reported that the campaign could cost as much as ?100m as ministers seek to inform people what they might need to do, if anything, ahead of the deadline.
Meanwhile, it has emerged the EU is considering classifying no deal as a major disaster, like an earthquake, in order to free up funds for countries affected.
Benedict Pringle, author of the politicaladvertising.co.uk blog, said that, if true, the ?100m budget would be roughly double what the National Lottery spends on advertising each year.
So if you think about how often you see a lottery advert and double it, that's how much we could be seeing the campaign over the next two months, he told the BBC.
At football grounds, in advert breaks for Coronation Street and The Great British Bake Off, this is where you'll get the biggest reach with the public.
Media captionMichael Gove: 'Everyone will have the food they need'
What does the campaign involve?
An image showing one of the campaign's billboards was issued by the Cabinet Office ahead of their rollout this week.
Leaflets, online seminars, and information stands at events will also be used.
British citizens who are intending to travel to Europe and businesses which export to the EU are among the specific groups targeted by the campaign.
The campaign encourages people and businesses to visit the government website to answer questions and receive advice on preparing for Brexit.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PE1J51 - The Berkeley Arms is a Grade II listed building. There have been many improvements to the premises over at least 800 years, the surviving oldest part being a 12th century barn, now a medieval style dinning area.
The cellars are built in very old stone. The very substantial main chimney supports many timbers of the newer front part of the premisses, suggesting alteration works around 1550.
Berkeley Arms Tewkesbury
Before the 1850's the Berkeley Arms was known as the 'Queen's Arms', however the former landlord 'Sam Pearse' was made bankrupt in 1843. He had borrowed ?2,000 against the pub, much more than it's value at the time.
Berkeley Arms Tewkesbury
No mention of the 'Queen's Arms' appears thereafter, but in 1849 a tenant called Hathaway occupies the premises. Licence records show he was registered as the Landlord of the 'Berkeley Arms' in 1869.
Wadworth's Berkeley Arms Tewkesbury With the increase in cycle touring in the 1930's, the Berkeley Arms became an 'Offical Stop-over' for the British Cyclists' Touring Club in the days of 'cloth caps' and arty 'silk mufflers'.
In the 1960's a string of here today gone tomorrow tenants led to a decline in trade, the Berkeley Arms almost closed. This quickly achieved what Temperance Movements had failed to do over many decades.
Around 1969 a new floor was put down in the bar, to do so workmen had to remove 7 layers of old floor going way back in time, no archaeological Time Team in those days.
The Berkeley Arm's fortunes were restored by Philip and Ruby Jones over their combined 23 year tenancy beginning in 1969.
In the 1980's an old sealed up back room was opened, the floor was covered in a deep layer of old 19th century books. These may relate to a clearing of cupboards and discovery in 1896 of various deeds, wills and other documents relating to the 'Queen's Arms' and a former town inn called the 'Quart Pot' (pulled down in 1837).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PE1J53 - Green Shield Stamps was a British sales promotion scheme that rewarded shoppers with stamps that could be used to buy gifts from a catalogue or from any affiliated retailer. The scheme was introduced in 1958 by Richard Tompkins, who had noticed the success of the long-established Sperry & Hutchinson Green Stamps in America.
For a few years, the scheme was so widely adopted that it was referenced in pop songs. But it suffered when Tesco ceased to use it, as part of a price-cutting policy that became standard nationwide. To retain business, Green Shield allowed customers to buy gifts from the catalogue with a mix of stamps and cash, but soon the catalogue became cash-only, and the operation was re-branded as Argos. Stamps were withdrawn altogether in 1991.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P8HWD6 - Bloodhound LSR, formerly Bloodhound SSC, is a British land vehicle designed to travel at supersonic speeds with the intention of setting a new world land speed record. The arrow-shaped car, under development since 2008, is powered by a jet engine and will be fitted with an additional rocket engine. The initial goal is to exceed the current speed record of 763 mph (1,228 km/h), with the vehicle believed to be able to achieve up to 1,000 miles per hour (1,609 km/h).
Driver Andy Green will attempt to break his own record, set in 1997. The previous business behind Project Bloodhound went into administration (bankruptcy) in late 2018. Entrepreneur Ian Warhurst bought the car to keep the project alive. A new company called Grafton LSR Ltd was formed to manage the project, which was renamed Bloodhound LSR and moved to SGS Berkeley Green University Technical College. Lack of funds and the COVID-19 pandemic stalled progress in 2020, and in 2021 the vehicle was offered for sale.
The venue for high speed testing and future world land speed record attempts is the Hakskeen Pan in the Mier area of the Northern Cape, South Africa. An area 12 miles (19 km) long and 3 miles (4.8 km) wide was identified as suitable, with the first runs in October 2019. Further runs in November 2019 achieved a top speed of 628 miles per hour (1,011 km/h), the eighth vehicle to attain a land speed of over 600 miles per hour (970 km/h).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P4HWP5 - Barney the owner started by making Eau De Vie when he came out of his career as a nature photographer, he delicately picks the fruit for each flavour, washing, peeling and preparing each by hand.
After a number of seasons making the different Eau De Vies he then ventured into gin. Barney would soak hundreds of botanicals in a neutral spirit to discover which gave the best flavours, then with each botanical would go through the different species to see which would go the best with the other botanicals.
The final product is created like this: Hard spices, berries and herbs are soaked in our neutral British wheat spirit for 40 hours. We then suspend fresh blood orange zest and a rich mix of flowers and fragrant leaves above the liquid, their aroma gently extracted by the rising steam. 34 ingredients in all come together in a slow 7-hour, carefully guided distillation. It creates a sum much greater than its parts.
The dry flavour is matched with a lovely spearmint flavour which stays with you long after you drink it.

Over the years Roadchef have acquired a portfolio of 20 sites. A large expansion occurred in 1998 when Roadchef agreed to purchase Blue Boar Group and Take A Break for ?80 million and thus proceeded to integrate these acquisitions into an enlarged Roadchef Group. At the time, Blue Boar was the fourth largest operator of motorway services areas in the UK with three operational sites and one development site.
The acquired Watford Gap site was the first motorway service area to be opened in the UK in 1959 and is one of the UK's best known sites. A few years ago (according to Google Finance), Roadchef Motorways was one of the largest Motorway Services Area (MSA) operators in the UK, with 21 sites representing 24% of the market and serving some 60 million visitors each year.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNRN - Little Chef had a spin-off brand called Little Chef Express which Forte developed in 1995 as a rival to fast food outlets. The first Express outlet was at the Markham Moor service station (A1 North), though only as an addition to the existing Little Chef menu there. However, only five restaurants were ever built on the roadside, and the idea was re-developed when Little Chef was taken over by Compass, with the Express take outs being set up in food courts, including one in the Eurostar terminal
Little Chef was a chain of restaurants in the United Kingdom, founded in 1958 by entrepreneur Sam Alper, who was inspired by American diners. The chain was famous for the Olympic Breakfast ? its version of a full English ? as well as its Early Starter and Jubilee Pancakes. The restaurants were mostly located on the roadside near A roads, often paired with a Travelodge motel, a Burger King and a petrol station. The chain was also located along motorways in Moto Services, for a time.
The chain expanded rapidly throughout the 1970s, and its parent company would acquire the Happy Eater chain in the 1980s, its only major roadside competitor. When its owners converted all Happy Eater restaurants to Little Chef in the late 1990s, this allowed it to peak in scale with 439 restaurants. Little Chef began to face decline in the early 2000s, this mainly due to the chain expanding too fast, meaning it could not properly invest in all of its locations. Compared to its peak in the late 1990s, by 2005 the chain had lost almost half of its locations.
In 2007, the chain entered administration, marking 41 out of 239 restaurants to close. This was followed by another closure programme in 2012 to reduce the chain to 94 restaurants. In early 2017, licence owners Kout Food Group sold the remaining 70 locations to Euro Garages, who would convert the restaurants into their partner franchises such as Starbucks, Subway and Greggs.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYCHX - A Brief History of St Peter's Parish Church
There has been a church dedicated to St Peter on this site from the early 800s. The earlier building fell into disrepair in the early 1400s and was rebuilt in the Perpendicular style between about 1452 and 1460 by the Abbot of Winchcombe and the townspeople with the encouragement and support of Ralph Boteler, Lord of Sudeley. He arranged for his father and elder brothers to be reburied in the chapel at the east end of the new St Peter's, and provided them with carved effigies. They were also portrayed in the stained glass of the side windows
his sisters and presumably his mother were portrayed in the chapel on the north side. The new church was almost certainly the first here to be provided with seating, as the clergy responded to the challenge of the radical reformist movement of the Lollards with more instructive sermons. Embroidered panels from the new vestments acquired at that time have survived and are displayed in a cabinet in the north aisle.
Not long after this rebuilding the Church entered a period of great turbulence as part of the English Reformation in the reign of Henry VIII (1509 - 1547). The most dramatic change was the suppression of Winchcombe Abbey in 1539, following which all of the Abbey's (and the Abbot's) possessions and income were transferred into lay hands. As the Abbot was also the Rector of St Peter's, this meant much of the income that had financed St Peter's dried up and the church was left impoverished for centuries. At the same time a translation of the Bible into English was introduced into all churches, followed shortly afterwards by the first version of the Book of Common Prayer. Relics and pictures encouraging ?idolatry' were removed.
Change continued in the reign of Henry VIII's son Edward VI (1547-1553). More info at https://winchcombeparish.org.uk/a-brief-history-of-st-peters-parish-church.php

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DD4GY6 - The abbey was founded in 1246 by Richard, Earl of Cornwall, called King of the Romans and the younger brother of King Henry III of England. Richard founded the abbey to thank God after he had survived a shipwreck. Richard had been granted the manor of Hailes by King Henry, and settled it with Cistercian monks from Beaulieu Abbey in Hampshire. The great Cistercian abbey was entirely built in a single campaign in 1277, and was consecrated in a royal ceremony that included the King and Queen and 15 bishops.
Hailes Abbey became a site of pilgrimage after Richard's son Edmund donated to the Cistercian community a phial of the Holy Blood, purchased in Germany, in 1270. Such a relic of the Crucifixion was a considerable magnet for pilgrimage. From the proceeds, the monks of Hailes were able to rebuild the Abbey on a magnificent scale. One Abbot of Hailes was executed as a rebel after the Battle of Bramham Moor, in 1408.
Though King Henry VIII's commissioners declared the famous relic to be nothing but the blood of a duck, regularly renewed, and though the Abbot Stephen Sagar admitted that the Holy Blood was a fake in hope of saving the Abbey, Hailes Abbey was one of the last religious institutions to acquiesce following the Dissolution Act of 1536. The Abbot and his monks finally surrendered their abbey to Henry's commissioners on Christmas Eve 1539.
After the Dissolution, the west range consisting of the Abbot's own apartments was converted into a house and was home to the Tracy family in the seventeenth century, but these buildings were later demolished and now all that remains are a few low arches in a meadow with outlines in the grass. Surviving remains include the small church for the disappeared parish, with unrestored medieval wall-paintings

The Abbey of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Tewkesbury, in the English county of Gloucestershire, is the second largest parish church in the country and a former Benedictine monastery. It is one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in Britain, and has probably the largest Romanesque crossing tower in Europe.
In the 10th century the religious foundation at Tewkesbury became a priory subordinate to the Benedictine Cranbourne Abbey in Dorset. In 1087, William the Conqueror gave the manor of Tewkesbury to his cousin, Robert Fitzhamon, who, with Giraldus, Abbot of Cranbourne, founded the present abbey in 1092. Building of the present Abbey church did not start until 1102, employing Caen stone imported from Normandy and floated up the Severn.
After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the people of Tewkesbury saved the abbey from destruction in 1539: Insisting it was their parish church, which they had the right to keep, they bought it from King Henry VIII for the value of its bells and lead roof which would have been salvaged and melted down, leaving the structure a roofless ruin. The price came to \u00a3453 (\u00a3193,780 as of 2013).
The Abbey's 17th century organ - known as the Milton Organ - was originally made for Magdalen College, Oxford by Robert Dallam. After the English Civil War it was removed to the chapel of Hampton Court Palace and came to Tewkesbury in 1737. Since then, it has undergone several major rebuilds.

Wikipedia describes dominos thus:
In the area of mathematical tilings and polyominoes, the word domino often refers to any rectangle formed from joining two congruent squares edge to edge. The traditional Sino-European domino set consists of 28 dominoes, colloquially nicknamed bones, cards, tiles, tickets, stones, or spinners. Each domino is a rectangular tile with a line dividing its face into two square ends. Each end is marked with a number of spots (also called pips) or is blank. The backs of the dominoes in a set are indistinguishable, either blank or having some common design. A domino set is a generic gaming device, similar to playing cards or dice, in that a variety of games can be played with a set.
The oldest domino sets have been dated from around 1120 A.D. Modern dominoes, as most of the Western world knows them, however, appear to be a Chinese invention. They were apparently derived from cubic dice, which had been introduced into China from India some time in the distant past. Each domino originally represented one of the 21 results of throwing two dice. One half of each domino is set with the pips from one die and the other half contains the pips from the second die. Chinese sets also introduce duplicates of some throws and divide the dominoes into two classes: military and civil. Chinese dominoes are also longer than typical European dominoes. Over time Chinese dominoes also evolved into the tile set used to play Mah Jong, a game which swept across the United States in the early to mid 1920s and has enjoyed moderate popularity, especially in its 'solitaire' form, since that time.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEMXA7 - Interior view of St Marys Church Linton, Forest of Dean Micheldean, Gloucester, Glos, England, UK. Shows sandstone stonework.
Linton is a small village in Herefordshire, England, around 5 kilometres (3 mi) east of Ross-on-Wye.
It has a church called St. Mary's, which dates from the 13th century. The spire can be seen when travelling eastwards on the M50 motorway when 2 miles east of junction 4. There is also a village hall, and a post office which opens a few hours each week.
Several activities take place in the village hall: brownies, pilates etc.
Each year, the only pub in the village hosts a charitable event
The festival is organised by a committee responsible for the creation of funds for an increasing number of local charities and good causes. The Landlords of The Alma Inn run the beer tents, providing a range of local and more exotic ales each year. The Alma provides a natural amphitheatre that is the garden to the rear of the pub which is an intimate environment for the notable Blues acts the committee books each year.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K69A4H - Gloucester Services are a pair of Motorway Service Areas (MSA) serving the northbound and southbound carriageways of the M5 between Junction 11A and Junction 12, near Whaddon, Gloucester.
