Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R7A3PF - Herbert Jansch (3 November 1943 ? 5 October 2011) was a Scottish folk musician and founding member of the band Pentangle. He was born in Glasgow and came to prominence in London in the 1960s as an acoustic guitarist and singer-songwriter. He recorded more than 28 albums and toured extensively from the 1960s to the 21st century.
Jansch was a leading figure in the 1960s British folk revival, touring folk clubs and recording several solo albums, as well as collaborating with other musicians such as John Renbourn and Anne Briggs. In 1968, he co-founded the band Pentangle, touring and recording with them until their break-up in 1972. He then took a few years' break from music, returning in the late 1970s to work on a series of projects with other musicians. He joined a reformed Pentangle in the early 1980s and remained with them as they evolved through various changes of personnel until 1995. Until his death, Jansch continued to work as a solo artist.
Jansch's work influenced many artists, especially Jimmy Page, Mike Oldfield, Paul Simon, Pete Hawkes, Nick Drake, Donovan, and Neil Young. He received two Lifetime Achievement Awards at the BBC Folk Awards: one, in 2001, for his solo achievements and the other, in 2007, as a member of Pentangle.
Pentangle's first major concert was at the Royal Festival Hall in 1967, and their first album, The Pentangle, was released in the following year. Pentangle embarked on a demanding schedule of touring the world and recording and, during this period, Jansch largely gave up solo performances. He did, however, continue to record, releasing Rosemary Lane in 1971. The tracks for this album were recorded on a portable tape recorder by Bill Leader at Jansch's cottage in Ticehurst, Sussex?a process which took several months, with Jansch only working when he was in the right mood.
Pentangle reached their highest point of commercial success with the release of their Basket of Light album in 1969.

The original building opened in 1934 in a mercantile area east of Glasgow's city centre, built by Margaret Maggie McIver (n??e Russell) (1879?1958), The Barras Queen. The Barras street market (more properly Glasgow Barrowland market), after which the area and the ballroom are named, continues until the present day. The building was largely destroyed by fire in 1958, leading to a complete rebuild. The rebuilt ballroom opened on Christmas Eve 1960. The Barrowland building includes large street-level halls used for the weekend markets, with a sizeable weatherproof hall above. The front of the building is decorated with an animated neon sign. The sign is believed to be the biggest of its kind in the UK, although this cannot be confirmed as the original order documents detailing the specifications of the sign have been lost.
In more recent years the ballroom has become a major concert venue with a capacity of around 2,100 people, known for its acoustics and its sprung dance floor. Simple Minds filmed the video for their 1983 hit single, Waterfront, at Barrowlands. Oasis, U2, The Stranglers, The Clash, The Smiths, Big Country, Muse, Foo Fighters, The Vatersay Boys, Skipinnish and Marillion have all played at the hall. Adjacent to the ballroom itself is the Barrowland Park, where there is a pathway which features the names of many artists who have played at the venue over the decades. Northern Ireland punk band Stiff Little Fingers have played to a sold-out crowd every St Patrick's day since 1992, and recorded their Best served Loud album there in 2016 to celebrate 25 years at Barrowland.
Between 1968 and 1969, three young women (Patricia Docker, Jemima McDonald and Helen Puttock) were found brutally murdered after nights out at the Barrowland. All three murders were attributed to a man dubbed Bible John by police.

The slogan People Make Glasgow has been unveiled as the new brand name for Scotland's largest city.
It was chosen following a consultation which saw ideas submitted from more than 1,500 people from 42 countries.
Glasgow City Marketing Bureau said the process saw words such as real, smart, home, creative, bright and better came through, time and time again.
The brand will be used to market the city at home and abroad and replaces: Glasgow: Scotland with style.
The slogan combines with key ideas to form different messages, such as People Make Glasgow Home and People Make Glasgow Creative.
Glasgow City Council has committed ?œ500,000 this year to develop and promote the brand across the UK and internationally.
'Sense of pride'
Council leader Gordon Matheson said said the new slogan reflects the Glaswegian character.
It's bold, friendly, confident, and it evokes a real sense of pride, he added.
The people of Glasgow are at the heart of this brand - we have created something which presents a truly distinctive identity for the city and on behalf of Glasgow I would like to warmly thank all those who gave their ideas so generously.
The four-week consultation, which was run by the council's city marketing bureau, also attracted 7,000 website hits and involved more than 400,000 Facebook and Twitter users worldwide.

Once submissions had been analysed, a creative team from the marketing bureau came up with the new slogan, which was approved by board members.
Councillor Matheson added: Over the past five weeks we have reviewed all of the contributions from Glaswegians and from across the globe.
We also interviewed more than 40 of Glasgow's leaders from the private, public and academic sectors and, overwhelmingly, they told us that what makes Glasgow great is its people.

Helen Liddell, former Secretary of State for Scotland, called for the wine to be banned. In 2005, Scottish Justice Minister Cathy Jamieson suggested that retailers should stop selling the wine. On a subsequent visit to Auchinleck within her constituency, she was greeted by teenagers chanting, Don't ban Buckie. Jamieson then received correspondence from lawyers acting for Buckfast distributors, J. Chandler & Company, in Andover. A further consequence was that Buckfast sales increased substantially in the months following Jamieson's comments

Plans to end a long-standing tradition of placing a traffic cone on Glasgow's iconic Duke of Wellington statue have been dropped after a massive backlash.
Glasgow City Council wanted to raise the plinth as part of a ?œ65,000 project to refurbish the monument, which stands outside the Gallery of Modern Art.
It abandoned the plan after a massive social media campaign saw thousands of people sign a petition opposing it.
Campaigners who planned a demonstration now say they will hold a victory rally.
The council had said that raising the height would end a practice which projected a depressing image of Glasgow and would save the ?œ10,000 cost of removing the cone 100 times a year.

Plans to end a long-standing tradition of placing a traffic cone on Glasgow's iconic Duke of Wellington statue have been dropped after a massive backlash.
Glasgow City Council wanted to raise the plinth as part of a ?œ65,000 project to refurbish the monument, which stands outside the Gallery of Modern Art.
It abandoned the plan after a massive social media campaign saw thousands of people sign a petition opposing it.
Campaigners who planned a demonstration now say they will hold a victory rally.
The council had said that raising the height would end a practice which projected a depressing image of Glasgow and would save the ?œ10,000 cost of removing the cone 100 times a year.

The slogan People Make Glasgow has been unveiled as the new brand name for Scotland's largest city.
It was chosen following a consultation which saw ideas submitted from more than 1,500 people from 42 countries.
Glasgow City Marketing Bureau said the process saw words such as real, smart, home, creative, bright and better came through, time and time again.
The brand will be used to market the city at home and abroad and replaces: Glasgow: Scotland with style.
The slogan combines with key ideas to form different messages, such as People Make Glasgow Home and People Make Glasgow Creative.
Glasgow City Council has committed ?œ500,000 this year to develop and promote the brand across the UK and internationally.
'Sense of pride'
Council leader Gordon Matheson said said the new slogan reflects the Glaswegian character.
It's bold, friendly, confident, and it evokes a real sense of pride, he added.
The people of Glasgow are at the heart of this brand - we have created something which presents a truly distinctive identity for the city and on behalf of Glasgow I would like to warmly thank all those who gave their ideas so generously.
The four-week consultation, which was run by the council's city marketing bureau, also attracted 7,000 website hits and involved more than 400,000 Facebook and Twitter users worldwide.

Once submissions had been analysed, a creative team from the marketing bureau came up with the new slogan, which was approved by board members.
Councillor Matheson added: Over the past five weeks we have reviewed all of the contributions from Glaswegians and from across the globe.
We also interviewed more than 40 of Glasgow's leaders from the private, public and academic sectors and, overwhelmingly, they told us that what makes Glasgow great is its people.

During November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the InterCity West Coast franchise would be replaced by the West Coast Partnership (WCP). In August 2019, the DfT awarded the WCP franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium. On 8 December 2019, Avanti West Coast took over operations from the prior operating company Virgin Trains, which had run the franchise since 1997. Originally, the franchise was initially scheduled to run until March 2030, and had also been set to operate the initial High Speed 2 services from 2026. However, during December 2020, it was announced that First Trenitalia and the DfT had agreed to terminate the WCP franchise at the earlier date of 31 March 2026 as part of the abolition of the franchise system. Since then a number of contract changes have taken place due to COVID-19 and then poor performance by the company. As of March 2023, the company's contract will expire in October 2023.
Between 14 August and 18 September 2022, Avanti West Coast reduced its timetable, citing unofficial strike action from its employees. However, this allegation was disputed by Aslef, which accused the company of lying and blamed their lack of recruitment, especially of train drivers, for the problems. Trains were running at one service per hour on the majority of routes, as opposed to the three which would typically occur on the London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly route.
