Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWDK0N - A Scottish Soldier is a song written by Andy Stewart using the tune of The Green Hills of Tyrol, which was transcribed by John MacLeod during the Crimean War from La Tua Danza Sì Leggiera, a chorus part in the third act of Gioachino Rossini's 1829 opera Guglielmo Tell (William Tell). The song is about a dying Scottish soldier, wishing to return to the hills of his homeland rather than die in the Tyrol. The song was one of two US chart entries by Andy Stewart. A Scottish Soldier reached no. 1 in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. It spent 36 weeks in the UK Singles Chart in 1961.
This song was the entrance theme of professional wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper
Andrew Stewart MBE (30 December 1933 11 October 1993) was a Scottish singer and entertainer. He presented the BBC TV variety show The White Heather Club throughout the 1960s, and his song Donald Where's Your Troosers? was a hit in both 1960 and 1989. Internationally, the song most closely associated with Stewart is A Scottish Soldier.
Stewart was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1933, the son of a teacher. When he was five years old, the family moved to Perth and then, six years later, to Arbroath.

Data from the UK's main cash machine network reveals that ATM transactions fell by up to 68% during the first national lockdown
The UK's main cash machine network LINK has published data showing that despite a 37% fall in ATM transactions in 2020, UK adults on average still withdrew more than £1,500 each from cash machines.
Scotland saw the steepest fall, with adults withdrawing almost £900 less than they did in 2019.
On average, UK adults visited ATMs 12 times less in 2020 than they did in 2019.
In recent years, as consumers use alternative payment methods such as contactless cards or online payments, ATM transactions have fallen on average around 10% year-on-year.
However, in April 2020, when the UK went into the first national lockdown, ATM transactions fell initially by up to 68%.
Despite subsequent lockdowns, on average more than £1.6bn was still withdrawn for cash machines every week for the rest of 2020.

Scots are facing an uphill battle to access their cash after a large number of bank and cash machine closures, a consumer organisation has warned.
Research by Which? found 339 Scottish bank branches had closed their doors since 2015, while 290 ATMs had been withdrawn in the past year.
It urged the UK government to appoint a regulator to protect access to cash.
HM Treasury said it recognised the continued importance of cash, especially for more vulnerable people.
It added the existing payment systems regulator was closely monitoring developments within ATM provision.
Which? said the closure of cash machines, the majority of which were free to use, had hit Scotland harder than other parts of the UK because of its many rural communities, combined with an already devastated bank branch network.
In Scotland, withdrawals from machines were down just 3.3% in 2017-18, compared with larger drops of 8.5% and 7.7% in London and the south east of England respectively.

The original M&LR single-storey offices facing Hunt's Bank Approach were built in the Italianate style in sandstone ashlar with slate roofs in 1844. They were later enlarged and given a second storey. William Dawes built the station's larger extension for the L&YR in 1909. It is at right-angles to the north end of the old station giving the enlarged station an L-shaped plan. Facing Victoria Station Approach, its façade is in the Edwardian neo-Baroque style, four storeys high and 31 bays to the rounded corner at the south-east end. The ground floor windows have rounded heads and those on the floors above are square. The ornate glass and iron canopy along the façade displays the names of destinations that the station served in Art Nouveau lettering. The canopy was damaged by the Provisional IRA's 1996 bomb placed in a street adjacent to the Arndale Centre and was restored four years later.
Heritage features in the concourse were restored during the 2013-15 renovation, they include the café with its glass dome and mosaic lettering which was originally the first-class dining room, the adjacent bookstall, and the original 1909 wood-panelled booking hall. In the entrance is a large, white glazed tiled map showing the former network of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway.
Underneath the map is a bronze World War I war memorial with effigies of Saint George and Saint Michael at each end which was installed in 1923. At the south end of the concourse is the 'soldier's gate' which opened to the former fish docks from where thousands of soldiers departed for World War I and where a bronze plaque was erected to commemorate them. The gateway was restored in 2015 and a steel screen inserted featuring a map of World War I Commonwealth grave cemeteries in Northern France and Belgium.

During November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the InterCity West Coast franchise would be replaced by the West Coast Partnership (WCP). In August 2019, the DfT awarded the WCP franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium. On 8 December 2019, Avanti West Coast took over operations from the prior operating company Virgin Trains, which had run the franchise since 1997. Originally, the franchise was initially scheduled to run until March 2030, and had also been set to operate the initial High Speed 2 services from 2026. However, during December 2020, it was announced that First Trenitalia and the DfT had agreed to terminate the WCP franchise at the earlier date of 31 March 2026 as part of the abolition of the franchise system. Since then a number of contract changes have taken place due to COVID-19 and then poor performance by the company. As of March 2023, the company's contract will expire in October 2023.
Between 14 August and 18 September 2022, Avanti West Coast reduced its timetable, citing unofficial strike action from its employees. However, this allegation was disputed by Aslef, which accused the company of lying and blamed their lack of recruitment, especially of train drivers, for the problems. Trains were running at one service per hour on the majority of routes, as opposed to the three which would typically occur on the London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly route. These are his thoughts on Citizen Firefighter.
Citizen Firefighter was conceived primarily to celebrate the fire service. But it is also an attempt, through a recognition of their work, to reclaim the political and civic space associated with the historical form of the public statue. While maintaining the clear, formal language of the past, the content and narrative of this new work differs in many ways from the historical tradition, and it is precisely through this rupture between Citizen Firefighter and what is generally understood to be the impact of historical works that we can begin to assess what kind of relationship now exists between citizen and resident, between statue and sculpture. The space opened up in this way creates the possibility of a dialogue of historical and sociological change.
Through the work's symbolism, Citizen Firefighter appears to rekindle the onlooker's reflexes when faced with a nineteenth-century public monument. It differs, however, by both the neutrality of its stance and by the prominence given to the breathing apparatus, which has a democratising effect on human identity. The generic or quotidian aspect of the figure is further accentuated by a reductive treatment of form, in which all naturalist or realist traits have been suppressed. Subtraction peels away pathos, creating enough critical distance to enable the viewer to consider the complex charge inherent in the way the subject is presented. In this way the meaning of the monument itself is left partially open, thus creating a space that can be reinvested by the onlooker

The original building opened in 1934 in a mercantile area east of Glasgow's city centre, built by Margaret Maggie McIver (née Russell) (18791958), The Barras Queen. The Barras street market (more properly Glasgow Barrowland market), after which the area and the ballroom are named, continues until the present day. The building was largely destroyed by fire in 1958, leading to a complete rebuild. The rebuilt ballroom opened on Christmas Eve 1960. The Barrowland building includes large street-level halls used for the weekend markets, with a sizeable weatherproof hall above. The front of the building is decorated with an animated neon sign. The sign is believed to be the biggest of its kind in the UK, although this cannot be confirmed as the original order documents detailing the specifications of the sign have been lost.
In more recent years the ballroom has become a major concert venue with a capacity of around 2,100 people, known for its acoustics and its sprung dance floor. Simple Minds filmed the video for their 1983 hit single, Waterfront, at Barrowlands. Oasis, U2, The Stranglers, The Clash, The Smiths, Big Country, Muse, Foo Fighters, The Vatersay Boys, Skipinnish and Marillion have all played at the hall. Adjacent to the ballroom itself is the Barrowland Park, where there is a pathway which features the names of many artists who have played at the venue over the decades. Northern Ireland punk band Stiff Little Fingers have played to a sold-out crowd every St Patrick's day since 1992, and recorded their Best served Loud album there in 2016 to celebrate 25 years at Barrowland.
Between 1968 and 1969, three young women (Patricia Docker, Jemima McDonald and Helen Puttock) were found brutally murdered after nights out at the Barrowland. All three murders were attributed to a man dubbed Bible John by police.

(i) An inch is roughly the length of the end of your thumb (i.e. from the joint to its end)
(ii) A foot is what you would expect, i.e. the length of a foot, originally the length of the Kings foot.
(iii) A yard was a Bowmans pull (i.e. from your breastbone to your hand).
Such rules of thumb are adequate if all that is required is a rough estimate of the length of an object, but you can imagine the arguments that would ensue if you were buying or selling cloth for example. If you are selling cloth you would make the most profit if you used someone with short arms as your measure, however if you are a tailor buying cloth, you would prefer someone with long arms! To ensure fair trading, standards of measurements were provided in public places in towns and cities throughout the UK.
The chain is the unit of measure used by surveyors, as recently as 50 years ago a young apprentice surveyor was sent to George Square to check the length of his company's chain against the length of the standard chain. In the days before metrication every child had to learn 3 feet make a yard, 22 yards make a chain, 10 chains make a furlong and 8 furlongs make a mile.
There are three sets of measurement standards to be found in George Square:
(a) The standard inch, foot, 2 foot, and 3 foot are mounted on the wall of the City Chambers (locate them on the right hand side of the entrance to the City Chambers as you face the building with your back to the Square).
(b) There is a standard chain with its links in the Square (locate these between the benches and the grassed area on the east side of square.)
(c) 100 feet. (Again these are located beside the benches, this time at the grassed area at the west side.)

In 1923, an extension to the east side of the building in John Street was opened and in 1984 Exchange House in George Street was completed, increasing the size of the City Chambers complex to some 14,000 m2
Need for a new city chambers had been apparent since the 18th century, with the old Tolbooth at Glasgow Cross becoming insufficient for the purposes of civic government in a growing town with greater political responsibilities. In 1814, the Tolbooth was sold with the exception of the steeple, which still remains and the council chambers moved to Jail Square in the Saltmarket, near Glasgow Green.

Early years
Pat Lally was born and brought up in the Gorbals, a poor district of Glasgow. He left school at 13, and was conscripted to the RAF after the War. He joined the Labour Party in 1950 and was elected as a Glasgow Corporation councillor in 1966.
Glasgow Council
Lally was involved in local government politics from 1966 to 1999. Although he was suspended from Labour's candidates list in 1977 in a housing allocation row, he returned to the City Chambers in 1980. He was council leader of Glasgow City District Council in the early 1990s and became Lord Provost of the new City Council in 1995, serving until 1999. During this time he did much to promote Glasgow on the national and international stage. He was credited as the driving force behind civic successes such as the 1988 Glasgow Garden Festival, Glasgow becoming European City of Culture in 1990, and European City of Architecture in 1999. He also played an important role in the creation of the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, which is sometimes dubbed 'Lally's Palais'.
In 1997 he and Alex Mosson were suspended by the Labour party in a votes for trips scandal. Both took the party to the Court of Session and had the suspension revoked. Lally retired from local government in 1999.
Pat Lally is nicknamed 'Lazarus', as a result of his numerous political comebacks.
Retirement
He quit the Labour Party in 2003, but later that year stood at the age of 77 against Mike Watson in Glasgow Cathcart to be an MSP as a health campaign candidate, and stood again to be an MSP in the October 2005 by-election, against ex-council leader Charlie Gordon, as an independent for the same constituency.
Lally stood as a candidate for the Scottish Senior Citizens Unity Party in the 2007 Scottish Parliament election on the Glasgow list. His wife, Peggy, died on polling day, 3 May.

Political career
Mosson served prison sentences in the 1960s for housebreaking, shoplifting and assault, which he attributed to being an alcoholic at the time
an affliction he later overcame.[2] He was first elected as a Glasgow councillor for Anderston in 1984. He was elected Lord Provost in 1999, replacing Pat Lally. He was succeeded in 2003 by Liz Cameron.
Mosson was associated with many notable events during his time as Lord Provost. These included: the UEFA Champions League Final between Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen at Hampden Park in 2002, the twinning of the city with Havana and the promotion of the £500,000,000 Glasgow Harbour Development.
As Lord Lieutenant of the City of Glasgow, the Lord Provost accompanied the Queen at the opening of the Glasgow Science Centre and the Lighthouse. He represented the city at the funerals of The Queen Mother and Cardinal Thomas Winning.
In November 2013, Mosson announced that he had decided to vote Yes in the 2014 Scottish independence referendum, insisting the referendum campaign is not a time for party politics

The Steeple is all that remains of the original Tolbooth buildings which contained the town hall, court and jail. The Tolbooth housed the Glasgow Council Chambers until 1814, when the council sold the Tolbooth building (later demolished in 1921) and moved to Jail Square in the Saltmarket, before eventually moving to the current City Chambers in George Square. The 126-foot-tall (38-metre) steeple, complete with clock mechanism, was repaired in 2008 after cracks were discovered in the structure, along with masonry, lead and guttering improvements. Along with the nearby Tron Theatre, formerly the Tron Kirk built in 1794, the Tolbooth Steeple is one of the oldest buildings in the city.

The Tron church was founded as the Collegiate Church of Our Lady and St Anne in 1525 by James Houston. It became a Protestant church after the Reformation and the tower was added in the late 16th century. The steeple was added in 1628. Most of the building was destroyed by a fire in 1793, only the tower surviving.The current church was built in 1794, separately from the tower. It was substantially redeveloped in the 1980s as the Tron Theatre.

It was founded in 1740 on the bank of the Molendinar Burn by Hugh and Robert Tennent. It is owned by C&C Group plc, which purchased the Tennent Caledonian Breweries subsidiary in late August 2009 from Belgian brewing company Anheuser-Busch InBev (formerly known as InBev).
The company produces Tennent's Lager, Scotland's market leading brand of pale lager since it was first produced at the Wellpark Brewery in 1885
Wellpark Brewery was originally known as the Drygate Brewery. It was founded as H & R Tennent in 1740 at Drygate Bridge, near Glasgow Cathedral. Group. It was later bought by the Belgian brewer Interbrew (now InBev) in June 2000, which became part of Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2008.
C&C Group of Ireland announced a deal to buy the brewery and the Tennent's brand from AB-InBev on 27 August 2009. It also agreed to acquire the Scottish and Irish distribution rights to Beck's and Stella Artois as part of the £180 million offer.
In May 2014, C&C Group and Williams Bros Brewing Co opened a craft brewery joint venture on the site, called Drygate Brewing Co

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT2T1 - The beginnings of Anchor Line Ltd can be seen in 1838 when two brothers, Nicol and Robert Handyside, established themselves in Glasgow, Scotland, as shipbrokers and merchants. They used chartered tonnage to trade with the Baltic and Russia. The business operated under the name N & R Handyside & Co, and in 1852 the name Anchor Line was used by them for the first time, but only as a by-line in an advertisement.
In the same year Thomas Henderson joined the business. The business bought its first ship from the builders in 1854. In June 1855, Thomas Henderson became a full partner and the firm was renamed Handysides & Henderson. This firm became D & W Henderson when shipbuilding commenced. That company went out of business in 1863, and the trade was taken over by the Anchor Line of Peninsular & Mediterranean Steam Packets.
In 1865, the Anchor Line opened its own office in New York under the name Henderson Brothers, and sold tickets through more than three thousand ticket agencies throughout North America. An office was also opened in Londonderry, Ireland. In 1869, Henderson Brothers opened offices at Liverpool, England, and Dundee, Scotland.
A service from Naples, Italy, to New York began. In November 1869, the Suez Canal opened and this made India as important to the Anchor Line as America now that the Far East was 4,000 miles closer. An Anchor vessel made the first British merchant ship journey, southbound through the canal, on the day following the opening.
In 1872, the Anchor Line and D & W Henderson jointly bought the shipyard of Tod & MacGregor, Meadowside, Partick, Glasgow, to build the hulls into which the engines from D & W Henderson's Finnieston works could be fitted. They opened a Manchester office in 1882.
In 1899, the name Anchor Line (Henderson Bros) Ltd came into being by the formation of a limited liability company. The Cunard Steamship Co Ltd bought the whole of the Ordinary shares of the Anchor Line (Henderson Bros) Ltd in 1911.

It is first recorded in the 16th century as the great kilt, a full-length garment whose upper half could be worn as a cloak. The small kilt or modern kilt emerged in the 18th century, and is essentially the bottom half of the great kilt. Since the 19th century, it has become associated with the wider culture of Scotland, and more broadly with Gaelic or Celtic heritage. It is most often made of woollen cloth in a tartan pattern.
Although the kilt is most often worn on formal occasions and at Highland games and other sports events, it has also been adapted as an item of informal male clothing, returning to its roots as an everyday garment. Turkish: hellim) is a traditional Cypriot cheese made from a mixture of goat's and sheep's milk, and sometimes also cow's milk. Its texture is described as squeaky.[8] It has a high melting point and so can easily be fried or grilled, a property that makes it a popular meat substitute. Rennet (mostly vegetarian or microbial) is used to curdle the milk in halloumi production, although no acid-producing bacteria are used in its preparation.
Halloumi is often associated with the island of Cyprus, where it has been produced by a multi-ethnic population for many centuries. It is also popular throughout the Eastern Mediterranean. It became widely available in Turkey after 2000. By 2013, demand in the United Kingdom had surpassed that in every other European country except Cyprus.

It was used in the United Kingdom throughout the 20th century from the early 1920s. Unlike an ordinary callbox, its telephone was located behind a hinged door so it could be used from the outside, and the interior of the box was, in effect, a miniature police station for use by police officers to read and fill in reports, take meal breaks and even temporarily hold prisoners until the arrival of transport.
Police boxes predate the era of mobile telecommunications
now members of the British police carry two-way radios and mobile phones rather than relying on fixed kiosks. Most boxes are now disused or have been withdrawn from service.
The typical police box contained a telephone linked directly to the local police station, allowing patrolling officers to keep in contact with the station, reporting anything unusual or requesting help if necessary. A light on top of the box would flash to alert an officer that they were requested to contact the station. Members of the public could also use the phone to contact a police station in an emergency or, in the case of the Metropolitan Police, for assistance with any matter normally within the purview of the police.
Police boxes were usually blue, with the most notable exception being Glasgow, where they were red until the late 1960s. In addition to a telephone, they contained equipment such as an incident book, a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit.
The blue police box is often associated with the science fiction television programme Doctor Who, in which the protagonist's time machine, a TARDIS, is in the shape of a 1960s British police box

The Duke of Wellington, with his customary Queen St traffic cone, propositions a blue haired lady guitarist, with Tunnocks Teacakes strategically placed, over her charms. With IRN Brew in the background, this is Glasgow defined in a short alleyway. A fun and slightly edgy city, that absolutely everyone should experience, at least once.
Sloans bar, down the alley, is Glasgow's oldest bar and restaurant and dates back to 1797 when it was a coffee house in Morrison's Court. Twice a week a stagecoach would leave the court bound for Edinburgh. The courtyard was also the scene for many famous cockfighting contests \u2013 the sport of the day.

The red box in Glasgow city centre was once used by officers. But now it is being openly used to sell a smoking product derived from cannabis.
Chris Mackenzie who stood for election last month for the UK's first pro-cannabis party is handing out drug-legalisation propaganda from the former police box in Sauchiehall Street. The self-confessed cannabis user is also selling e-cigarette liquids containing one of the active compounds found in the plant.
The 26-year-old claims his £30 vape oils' which apparently contain cannabidiol (CBD), an extract from the cannabis plant can treat a range of medical conditions, including cancer, epilepsy and diabetes.

Cannabis is a class B drug meaning it it is illegal to possess.
Anyone found with the drug could be imprisoned for up to five years while supplying it can be punished with a 14-year jail sentence or an unlimited fine.
The penalty depends on the amount of the drug, the person's criminal history and other aggravating or mitigating factors.
Police can also issue a warning or an on-the-spot fine of £90 to someone found with cannabis.
Alternatively, officers could issue a cannabis warning which goes on a person's record but is not revealed by a standard criminal records check.
Of the 16,101 convictions for cannabis possession in the UK in 2016, 292 were jailed.
The legality of recreational use is not up for debate, the government has said.
What is medicinal cannabis?
Cannabis also contains cannabidiol (CBD) which scientists are investigating as a medical treatment.
CBD-based treatments have shown some promising results for reducing seizures in children with severe epilepsies.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P72CW0 - The City Chambers or Municipal Buildings in Glasgow, Scotland, has functioned as the headquarters of Glasgow City Council since 1996, and of preceding forms of municipal government in the city since 1889, located on the eastern side of the city's George Square. An eminent example of Victorian civic architecture, the building was constructed between 1882 and 1888 to a competition winning design by Scottish architect William Young a native of Paisley.
Inaugurated in August 1888 by Queen Victoria, the first council meeting was held within the chambers in October 1889. The building originally had an area of 5,016 square metres. In 1923, an extension to the east side of the building in John Street was opened and in 1984 Exchange House in George Street was completed, increasing the size of the City Chambers complex to some 14,000 square metres.
The need for a new city chambers had been apparent since the 18th century, with the old Tolbooth at Glasgow Cross becoming insufficient for the purposes of civic government in a growing town with greater political responsibilities. In 1814, the Tolbooth was sold with the exception of the steeple, which still remains and the council chambers moved to Jail Square in the Saltmarket, near Glasgow Green. Subsequent moves were made to Wilson Street and Ingram Street. In the early 1880s, City Architect John Carrick was asked to identify a suitable site for a purpose built City Council Chambers. Carrick identified the east side of George Square, which was then bought.
The new City Chambers initially housed Glasgow Town Council from 1888 to 1895, when it was replaced by Glasgow Corporation. It remained the Corporation's headquarters until it was replaced by Glasgow District Council under the wider Strathclyde Regional Council in May 1975. The City Chambers has been the headquarters of Glasgow City Council since April 1996, when it replaced the District Council with the abolition of the Strathclyde Region.

The slogan People Make Glasgow has been unveiled as the new brand name for Scotland's largest city.
It was chosen following a consultation which saw ideas submitted from more than 1,500 people from 42 countries.
Glasgow City Marketing Bureau said the process saw words such as real, smart, home, creative, bright and better came through, time and time again.
The brand will be used to market the city at home and abroad and replaces: Glasgow: Scotland with style.
The slogan combines with key ideas to form different messages, such as People Make Glasgow Home and People Make Glasgow Creative.
Glasgow City Council has committed £500,000 this year to develop and promote the brand across the UK and internationally.
'Sense of pride'
Council leader Gordon Matheson said said the new slogan reflects the Glaswegian character.
It's bold, friendly, confident, and it evokes a real sense of pride, he added.
The people of Glasgow are at the heart of this brand - we have created something which presents a truly distinctive identity for the city and on behalf of Glasgow I would like to warmly thank all those who gave their ideas so generously.
The four-week consultation, which was run by the council's city marketing bureau, also attracted 7,000 website hits and involved more than 400,000 Facebook and Twitter users worldwide.

The slogan People Make Glasgow has been unveiled as the new brand name for Scotland's largest city.
It was chosen following a consultation which saw ideas submitted from more than 1,500 people from 42 countries.
Glasgow City Marketing Bureau said the process saw words such as real, smart, home, creative, bright and better came through, time and time again.
The brand will be used to market the city at home and abroad and replaces: Glasgow: Scotland with style.
The slogan combines with key ideas to form different messages, such as People Make Glasgow Home and People Make Glasgow Creative.
Glasgow City Council has committed £500,000 this year to develop and promote the brand across the UK and internationally.
'Sense of pride'
Council leader Gordon Matheson said said the new slogan reflects the Glaswegian character.
It's bold, friendly, confident, and it evokes a real sense of pride, he added.
The people of Glasgow are at the heart of this brand - we have created something which presents a truly distinctive identity for the city and on behalf of Glasgow I would like to warmly thank all those who gave their ideas so generously.
The four-week consultation, which was run by the council's city marketing bureau, also attracted 7,000 website hits and involved more than 400,000 Facebook and Twitter users worldwide.

Plans to end a long-standing tradition of placing a traffic cone on Glasgow's iconic Duke of Wellington statue have been dropped after a massive backlash.
Glasgow City Council wanted to raise the plinth as part of a £65,000 project to refurbish the monument, which stands outside the Gallery of Modern Art.
It abandoned the plan after a massive social media campaign saw thousands of people sign a petition opposing it.
Campaigners who planned a demonstration now say they will hold a victory rally.
The council had said that raising the height would end a practice which projected a depressing image of Glasgow and would save the £10,000 cost of removing the cone 100 times a year.

The scheme would have seen a new granite-clad concrete base of 86cm (34in) added to the memorial to raise its overall height.
However, the council has reconsidered its decision after an online petition called Save Wellington's Cone, which gathered thousands of signatories in just a few hours, and a Facebook campaign which had planned a rally in support of the cone.
A council spokesman said: The wording of the report was appalling and the leader of the council (Gordon Matheson) has instructed officers to withdraw the planning application.
The petition stated: The cone on Wellington's head is an iconic part of Glasgow's heritage, and means far more to the people of Glasgow and to visitors than Wellington himself ever has.
Raising the statue will, in any case, only result in people injuring themselves attempting to put the cone on anyway: does anyone really think that a raised plinth will deter drunk Glaswegians?

Plans to end a long-standing tradition of placing a traffic cone on Glasgow's iconic Duke of Wellington statue have been dropped after a massive backlash.
Glasgow City Council wanted to raise the plinth as part of a £65,000 project to refurbish the monument, which stands outside the Gallery of Modern Art.
It abandoned the plan after a massive social media campaign saw thousands of people sign a petition opposing it.
Campaigners who planned a demonstration now say they will hold a victory rally.
The council had said that raising the height would end a practice which projected a depressing image of Glasgow and would save the £10,000 cost of removing the cone 100 times a year.

The scheme would have seen a new granite-clad concrete base of 86cm (34in) added to the memorial to raise its overall height.
However, the council has reconsidered its decision after an online petition called Save Wellington's Cone, which gathered thousands of signatories in just a few hours, and a Facebook campaign which had planned a rally in support of the cone.
A council spokesman said: The wording of the report was appalling and the leader of the council (Gordon Matheson) has instructed officers to withdraw the planning application.
The petition stated: The cone on Wellington's head is an iconic part of Glasgow's heritage, and means far more to the people of Glasgow and to visitors than Wellington himself ever has.
Raising the statue will, in any case, only result in people injuring themselves attempting to put the cone on anyway: does anyone really think that a raised plinth will deter drunk Glaswegians?

Time And Relative Dimension In Space) is a fictional time machine and spacecraft that appears in the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who and its various spin-offs.
A TARDIS is a product of the advanced technology of the Time Lords, an extraterrestrial civilisation to which the programme's central character, the Doctor, belongs. A properly maintained and piloted TARDIS can transport its occupants to any point in time and space. The interior of a TARDIS is much larger than its exterior. It can blend in with its surroundings using the ship's chameleon circuit. In the series, the Doctor pilots an apparently unreliable, obsolete TARDIS
in the episode Let's Kill Hitler (2011), it is designated TT Type 40, Mark 3. The Doctor's TARDIS was for most of the series' history said to have been stolen from the Time Lords' home planet, Gallifrey, where it was old, decommissioned and derelict.

During November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the InterCity West Coast franchise would be replaced by the West Coast Partnership (WCP). Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4531312643 - 'The red telephone box, was a british public telephone kiosk designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. Its often still seen throughout streets of the UK, Malta, Bermuda and Gibraltar despite now being an endangered species. Red boxes can still be seen in many places and current or ex-British Colonies around the world. The colour red was aparently chosen to make them easy to spot.
The red telephone box was the result of a competition in 1924 to design a kiosk that would be acceptable to the London Metropolitan Boroughs which had hitherto resisted the Post Office's effort to erect its early ugly K1 kiosks on their streets. Despite The Birmingham Civic Society trying to railroad proceedings with a concrete design of its own.
The organisers invited entries from three respected architects and, along with the designs from the Post Office and from The Birmingham Civic Society, the Fine Arts Commission judged the competition and selected the design submitted by Giles Gilbert Scott. The invitation had come at the time when Scott had been made a trustee of Sir John Soane's Museum \u2014 his design for the competition was in the classical style, but topped with a dome reminiscent of Soane's self-designed mausoleums in St Pancras' Old Churchyard and Dulwich Picture Gallery, London. (The original wooden prototypes of the entries were later put into public service at under-cover sites around London. That of Scott's design is the only one known to survive and is still where it was placed all those years ago, in the entrance arch to the Royal Academy.)
The Post Office chose to make Scott's winning design in cast iron (Scott had suggested mild steel) and to paint it red (Scott had suggested silver, with a 'greeny-blue' interior) and, with other minor changes of detail, it was brought into service as the Kiosk No.2 or K2. From 1926 K2 was deployed in and around London and the K1 continued to be erected elsewhere. A cheaper K3 was also designed for intended rolout nationwide.
K4 (designed by the Post Office Engineering Department in 1927) incorporated a post box and machines for buying postage stamps on the exterior. Only 50 kiosks of this design were built. I believe Warrington still has one of these near Bridgefoot.
In 1935 the K6 (kiosk number six) was designed to commemorate the silver jubilee of King George V and this spread until 1970 throughout the UK. The futuristic (for the time and fairly unloved) K8 was introduced in 1970.
There was never a K9. This name was taken by the fictional robotic dogs in Doctor Who, and its also seen in the spin-off, The Sarah Jane Adventures
The red telephone box is indeed a potent symbol of Britain (along with red routemaster buses) and lightweight replica K6 telephone kiosks are manufactured as flat-packs by commercial vendors and are shipped around the world for installation in such places as bars, restaurants and offices. The British red phone box, a definite classic.

The Merchant City is a district of the city of Glasgow. The area was first formed during the 18th century to house the wealthy merchant 'tobacco lords' who prospered shipping, amongst other things, tobacco, sugar and tea to the Clyde and fabricated goods to the Americas at this time many classical villas were built in the area. The name 'Merchant City' was coined during 1980's 'Glasgows Smiles Better' regeneration. Historically the area was called 'the tron' or 'cross' or simply by most Glaswegians 'the toun' or 'the town'. An annual Merchant City Festival takes place around the last week of September attracting tens of thousands to the area with a multi-arts programme.
