He was the lead singer, songwriter, and occasional guitarist of the band Joy Division, with whom he released the albums Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980).
Curtis had severe epilepsy and depression and died by suicide on the eve of Joy Division's first North American tour, shortly before the release of Closer
On the evening of 17 May 1980, Curtis asked Deborah to drop her impending divorce proceedings
she replied that it was likely that he would have changed his mind by the following morning and then mindful of his previous suicide attempt and also concerned that his state of anxiety and frustration might drive Curtis into an epileptic seizure offered to spend the night in his company. Deborah then drove to her parents' home to inform them of her intentions. When she returned to the couple's home at 77 Barton Street in Macclesfield, his demeanour had changed and he informed his wife of his intentions to spend the night alone, first making her promise not to return to the house before he had taken his scheduled 10 a.m. train to Manchester to meet his bandmates.
In the early hours of the next morning, Curtis took his own life. He was 23 years old. He had used the kitchen's washing line to hang himself after having written a note to Deborah in which he declared his love for her despite his recent affair with Honoré. Deborah found his body soon after. In her 1995 biography, Touching from a Distance, Deborah recalls finding her husband's body and initially thinking that he was still alive before noticing the rope around his neck. According to Tony Wilson, Curtis spent the few hours before his suicide watching Werner Herzog's 1977 film Stroszek and listening to Iggy Pop's 1977 album The Idiot. Ulidia Training (UT) was established in 2014 and is a voluntary community organisation with a constitution. It is currently applying for a Charities Registration Number.
UT operates from the Ulidian Centre, a shop front premises in Ballymoney, a small town in Country Antrim with a population of around 10,000 people, 80 per cent of which are from a Protestant background (2011 census).
UT was set up to provide improved opportunities for much needed up-skilling and confidence building within marginalised Loyalist communities living in the previously UDA dominated North Antrim and Londonderry constituency.
Through the provision of training, education and essential skills, UT has been assisting ex-prisoners, former combatants and their families and supporters as well as young people at risk of offending or criminal recruitment, in improving their employment and social inclusion opportunities.
UT offers five main strands of activity. -Traditional Skills Training Programme, Cultural Awareness Programme, Major Events Programme, Restorative Justice Programme, Social Enterprise Programme
Although originally intended as a single identity project, UT has played a central role in the organisation and delivery of a number of cross-community and cross-border events over the last twelve months.
The organisation has also been integral in calming volatile community situations and improving inter-community relations through meaningful dialogue with Republican and Nationalist representatives from the area.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAJ31B - HMS Birkenhead, also referred to as HM Troopship Birkenhead or Steam Frigate Birkenhead, was one of the first iron-hulled ships built for the Royal Navy. She was designed as a steam frigate, but was converted to a troopship before being commissioned. She was wrecked on 26 February 1852, while transporting troops to Algoa Bay at Danger Point near Gansbaai, 87 miles (140 kilometres) from Cape Town in the Cape Colony. There were not enough serviceable lifeboats for all the passengers, and the soldiers famously stood firm on board, thereby allowing the women and children to board the boats safely and escape the sinking. Only 193 of the estimated 643 people on board survived, and the soldiers' chivalry gave rise to the unofficial women and children first protocol when abandoning ship, while the Birkenhead drill of Rudyard Kipling's poem came to describe courage in face of hopeless circumstances. This mural was painted in appalilng weather conditions in January 2020 by Liverpool artist, Paul Curtis. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF91K - Jarvis Branson Cocker (born 19 September 1963) is an English musician and radio presenter. As the founder, frontman, lyricist and only consistent member of the band Pulp, he became a figurehead of the Britpop genre of the mid-1990s. Following Pulp's hiatus, Cocker has pursued a solo career, and for seven years he presented the BBC Radio 6 Music show Jarvis Cocker's Sunday Service.
Cocker gained international attention when he invaded the stage at the 1996 Brit Awards during a performance by Michael Jackson.
Early life
Cocker was born in Sheffield, grew up in the Intake area of the city, and attended City School. His father, Mac Cocker, a DJ and actor, left the family and moved to Sydney when Cocker was seven, and had no contact with Cocker or his sister, Saskia, until Jarvis was in his thirties. Following their father's departure, both children were brought up by their mother, Christine Connolly, who later became a Conservative councillor.
Cocker founded the band Pulp originally under the name Arabacus Pulp (named after a tradable commodity he learned about in an economics class) at the age of 15 while he was a pupil at The City School, Sheffield. After numerous line-up changes, and shortening the name to Pulp, the band eventually found fame in the 1990s with the success of the albums His 'n' Hers (1994) and Different Class (1995). Cocker was Pulp's frontman, and part of his trademark image was his glasses, which seemed to stay magically on his face no matter what antics he performed. This feat was achieved using a huge rubber band round the back of his glasses.
Pulp released two more albums (This Is Hardcore and We Love Life) to critical acclaim, though neither achieved the commercial success of Different Class. After releasing a greatest hits album, the band went on hiatus from 2003 to 2010, then returned to activity in 2011.
Cocker is also renowned for his wit and observations of the cultural scene.

Rapper Aitch has vowed to remove advert for his new album and restore the painting of local hero' in Manchester
A mural of former Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis on Port Street, Manchester, has been painted over with an advert for local rapper Aitch, prompting such an outcry that the rapper has promised to restore the original painting.
Aitch, an MC from Moston in north Manchester, said he had no control over which billboards were used to advertise his new album and would never have sanctioned such an act of disrespect against a local hero.
It's come to light that the iconic Ian Curtis mural on Port Street has been painted over with my album artwork. This is the first time I've heard of this, me and my team are getting this fixed pronto. No way on earth would I want to disrespect a local hero like Ian, he tweeted. I don't just choose locations for billboards, he added.
The monochrome mural by graffiti artist Akse P19 was created in October 2020 to commemorate World Mental Health Day. It depicts Curtis performing in Brussels in 1979, a year before he killed himself.

Case Ma'Claim was one of the invited artists, and he created a stunning piece entitled Human Dignity is Inviolable. He worked with the charity Back on Track and decided to depict one of the people they support. The German graffiti artist employed his signature life-like imagery to create this amazingly realistic piece that sends a positive message that anyone can make their life better. Just like a man depicted in the mural, we all need to recollect for a moment, and reflect on our decisions and think about are plans before venturing onto a wonderful journey called life. And sometimes, in this world full of negativity and death, it is nice to be reminded that not everything is lost and that we can always get back on track when we fail.

Armfield won 43 caps for England between 1959 and 1966, and captained his country on fifteen occasions. He made his international debut on 13 May 1959, against Brazil in front of over 120,000 fans at the Maracanã Stadium. He played in the 1962 World Cup in Chile, where he was acclaimed as the best right-back in the world. He was also voted best right-back in Europe between 1962 and 1964
In the 1966 World Cup final only the 11 players on the pitch at the end of the 42 win over West Germany received medals. Following a Football Association-led campaign to persuade FIFA to award medals to all the winners' squad members, Armfield was presented with his medal by Gordon Brown at a ceremony at 10 Downing Street on 10 June 2009

Klaus Märtens was a doctor in the German Army during World War II. After he injured his ankle in 1945, he found that his standard-issue army boots were too uncomfortable on his injured foot. While recuperating, he designed improvements to the boots, with soft leather and air-padded soles made of tyres. When the war ended and some Germans recovered valuables from their own cities, Märtens looted leather from a cobbler's shop. With that leather he made himself a pair of boots with air-cushioned soles
Märtens did not have much success selling his shoes until he met up with an old university friend, Herbert Funck, a Luxembourger, in Munich in 1947. Funck was intrigued by the new shoe design, and the two went into business that year in Seeshaupt, Germany, using discarded rubber shaped by moulds. The comfortable soles were a big hit with housewives, with 80% of sales in the first decade to women over the age of 40
Sales had grown so much by 1952 that they opened a factory in Munich. In 1959, the company had grown large enough that Märtens and Funck looked at marketing the footwear internationally. In this case a special coal train from Hulton Sidings, when approaching Bolton Terminal Station, got out of control. It was turned into one of the lines in the goods yard (Crook Street), ran through the yard on the metals, forced its way through the boundary wall, crossed the public road diagonally and completely wrecked two small dwelling-houses. The guard jumped from the brake-van

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JCMKBK - Grappenhall Cricket Club, one of the premier Cheshire cricket clubs in the North-West. played its first game in 1881 on a ground in Bellhouse Lane. The club moved to its current home of Broad Lane in 1892 with a new clubhouse. There have been several new clubhouses built on the existing site with the most recent developments coming in the late 1980's with significant improvements to the facilities in 2011.
In the early days the club played a number of friendly matches. Grappers then played regular fixtures up to the 2nd World War. In 1939, before war broke out, Grappers were founder members of the North Cheshire League but the league was stopped at the start of the war and was never resumed. From the 1960's onwards GCC were members of the Manchester Association which was the prelude to the clubs most successful period.
The 70's & 80's the golden years
In 1981, after a couple of good seasons following promotion to the top division in the late 70's, the 1st XI won the top flight for the first time. One of Grappenhall's best teams, it included some famous Grappers names such as Duncan Martindale, Rick Houghton, Chris Ashton, Neil Titchard, Jim Green, Nick Sharp and a young Neil Fairbrother, only a few years before he headed off for big things with Lancashire and England.
In 1982, the 1st XI went one better, this time winning the league and cup double with the HC Cup Final being one of a number of appearances the club mate at Old Trafford in the 80's. The double was repeated in 1987 with another appearance at Old Trafford, this time with the team including another future Lancashire star and future Grappers captain in Steve Titchard. In the same season, the 2nd XI also tasted success by winning the Worthington Cup. There were a number of other cup successes for the club during this period for the different senior and junior teams, with many a memorable game taking place and the tales still being regaled today.

In comments under this blog post, a descendent of the Howard family states that the word was formed by the conjunction of Gil and Eric, two brothers that ran the business started by their father H.A. Howard. (Any association with Eric Gill is entirely coincidental!)
An additional comment remarks that the sign itself was uncovered in 1991, which would partially explain its good condition. However, it has almost certainly been repainted since then. The building, a former lead works known at Junction Works, was Grade II listed in 1994, and a photograph that accompanies this listing on HIstoric England shows very fresh paintwork in place.
The listing also states that there was a conversion in progress at time of survey and my hunch is that the developers took the decision to retouch the sign, which would fit with a 1991 (re)discovery as part of the same works. (It would appear that not all new residents were entirely happy with the new flats!)
The firm itself was incorporated in the late 1940s, although prior to this the premises were occupied by Howard Alex. and Co, blouse manufacturers, which seems likely to have been related, perhaps under a different ownership structure. They remained in business until the 1980s, although from 1970 renamed themselves as HA Howard and Sons (Gileric), emphasising what was clearly their flagship product.

Rapper Aitch has vowed to remove advert for his new album and restore the painting of local hero' in Manchester
A mural of former Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis on Port Street, Manchester, has been painted over with an advert for local rapper Aitch, prompting such an outcry that the rapper has promised to restore the original painting.
Aitch, an MC from Moston in north Manchester, said he had no control over which billboards were used to advertise his new album and would never have sanctioned such an act of disrespect against a local hero.
It's come to light that the iconic Ian Curtis mural on Port Street has been painted over with my album artwork. This is the first time I've heard of this, me and my team are getting this fixed pronto. No way on earth would I want to disrespect a local hero like Ian, he tweeted. I don't just choose locations for billboards, he added.
Aitch's response was welcomed by Peter Hook, Joy Division's bassist, who had responded with dismay to the mural being painted over as very sad to see.
Thank you @OfficialAitch great gesture, he tweeted.
Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, also commended Aitch for fixing the mistake.
It should never have happened and he shouldn't have been put in this position. Ian is a true icon of our city. He must be fully restored and left in his place for time in memoriam. Thanks to everyone for showing what Ian means to us, tweeted Burnham.
The monochrome mural by graffiti artist Akse P19 was created in October 2020 to commemorate World Mental Health Day. It depicts Curtis performing in Brussels in 1979, a year before he killed himself.

Organised by Queerchester, which lobbies and fundraises for arts and culture initiatives in the gay village, the project saw the entries of the street art competition winners Glenn Jones (the overall winner), Lauren Jo Kelly, Adam Pryce and Mark Wallis become bigger than they could ever have imagined with the help of renowned graffiti artists Aylo (Hayley Garner) and Cbloxx (Joy Gilleard). Over 950 online votes and 7 judges chose between 29 brilliantly creative entries to pick the winners.
The mural depicts five famous faces who are considered to be LGBT icons, two of which are very well known around Manchester's gay scene
legendary drag queens Anna Phylactic (top) and Foo Foo Lammar (top right). The others are feminist Emmeline Pankhurst (top left), writer Quentin Crisp (bottom left) and scientist Alan Turing (bottom right). Lauren Jo Kelly designed Anna while Glenn Jones created the other four. Adam Pryce's cute critters in the top left above the rainbow and Mark Wallis' naked man below it complete the work of art.

The worker bee has long been a symbol of Manchester and of the city's hard-working past.
And while every other city in the north of England has a heritage built upon industry - there is a reason that the bee symbol is a part of Manchester's coat of arms which was given to the city in 1842.
In the 1800s Manchester was awash with textile mills that were commonly described as hives of activity' and the workers inside them compared to bees.
Busy bee' is still a term associated with industriousness and hard work.
These days Manchester is a city mostly associated with a deep and rich pop culture and a musical history that has influenced artists all over the globe. Coincidentally, the former Sankeys nightclub in Ancoats is housed in the former Beehive Mill on Jersey Street.
The Cottonopolis logo - the Manchester worker bee
You won't just find the bee on bins dotted around the city though. The bee can be seen on the clock face of the Palace Hotel, on the mosaic flooring at Manchester Town Hall and even above the arches of Links of London.
Furthermore, urban beekeeping even takes place on the roof of The Printworks , thus producing local honey.
Following the Manchester Arena bombing on May 22, 2017, the worker bee became a symbol of unity and defiance in the wake of the attack.
It has come to represent Manchester's indomitable spirit.
An image of 22 Manchester worker bees was emblazoned on a wall on the side of the Koffee Pot building in the heart of the Northern Quarter.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RG9926 - In 1989 Warrington borough council also saw a need for a better arts and theatre complex so re-developed the old courthouse and Centre Sport, sports hall next door into The Pyramid Arts Centre. The Pyramid, opened in 2002, hosts various classes throughout the year for people interested in discovering the arts. Pyramid also hosts a monthly Comedy Store Event, local band nights as well as having a varied programme of weekly classes. One of its studios was named in 2011 after the late Pete Postlethwaite.
The Parr Hall and Pyramid Arts Centre are located in the Cultural quarter of Warrington town centre, in Palmyra Square.
The Parr Hall is the only surviving professional concert hall venue in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.
Parr Hall was designed by the local architect William Owen in 1895.
Originally it was built for the people of Warrington by Joseph Parr. Warrington Musical Society gave the first concert.
The hall has hosted concerts and organ recitals from leading orchestras and cathedral organists over the years.
The Rolling Stones performed at the venue on 25 November 1963, The Moody Blues on 1 March 1965 and The Who on 22 March and 11 October 1965. The band James - having sold out concerts at much larger venues - played the Parr Hall on 20 December 1991 to record a promotional video. Other notable artist such as Feeder, The Courteeners, Beady Eye, Arctic Monkeys, and Shane Filan of Westlife have played at the venue, and Jools Holland is a regular performer.
The Parr Hall has also hosted many famous comedians including Andy Parsons, Jimmy Carr and Andi Osho.
It has also been home since 1992 to the Warrington Scouts Gang Show.
The Warrington Male Voice Choir have been regular performers at the Hall for the past 100 years.
The Parr Hall was the chosen venue for the first Stone Roses concert since 1996 when the band announced a last-minute show on 23 May 2012

Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. A mural therefore exists to express an idea or message and could generally be seen as reflecting values held dear to that community.
In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands

Elizabeth was born in London as the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. She was educated privately at home. She began to undertake public duties during the Second World War, serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. She has also reigned through various wars and conflicts involving many of her realms. She is the world's oldest reigning monarch as well as Britain's longest-lived. In 2015, she surpassed the reign of her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, to become the longest-reigning British monarch and the longest-reigning queen regnant and female head of state in world history. In October 2016, she became the longest currently reigning monarch and head of state following the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand.

Elizabeth was born in London as the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. She was educated privately at home. She began to undertake public duties during the Second World War, serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. She has also reigned through various wars and conflicts involving many of her realms. She is the world's oldest reigning monarch as well as Britain's longest-lived. In 2015, she surpassed the reign of her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, to become the longest-reigning British monarch and the longest-reigning queen regnant and female head of state in world history. In October 2016, she became the longest currently reigning monarch and head of state following the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand.

The Shankill Protestant Boys Flute Bandor as they are more famously known nowThe SPBwere formed in the Shankill area in 1980. The reasons for forming the band were much more than simply establishing another flute bandthe Shankill had many at that time. The men behind the formation had other ideas. They wanted to promote and express their Protestant culture and also remember the brave Volunteers and Servicemen who had fought and died during two World Warsin particular during the Somme offensiveand to remember those in more recent times who perished during the conflict in the war against violent Republicanism.
Sadly many of those who served the band since their beginnings 33 years ago are no longer with useither passed away or in many instances murdered. However of the original founders around ten remain. The SPB were the first flute band to receive and carry the colours of the 1st Battalion of the Ulster Volunteer Forcein 1982and to this day carry those colours with pride and dignity. It is a commonly known fact that these colours are carried on ALL occasionsat no time are they excludedand in the past this has caused some difficultieswith both the Police and indeed with certain sections of the Loyal Orders. At one stage during the Eighties the band came into conflict with the Scottish Orange Institution which forced the band off the road because of their refusal to parade without their beloved colours. Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. A mural therefore exists to express an idea or message and could generally be seen as reflecting values held dear to that community.
In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands
murals of international solidarity with revolutionary groups are equally common, as are those which highlight a particular issue, for example the Ballymurphy Massacre or the McGurk's Bar bombing. In working class unionist communities, murals are used to promote Ulster loyalist paramilitary groups such as the Ulster Defence Association and Ulster Volunteer Force and commemorate their deceased members. Once home of the legendary Walsall Illuminations festival of lights enjoyed annually by millions since its inauguration in 1952, Walsall Arboretum itself has its origins in another much more ancient activity in the town limestone mining.
The area now occupied by the Arboretum was originally part of Rushall until 1876. Limestone had been quarried in the vicinity since at least the late 18th century, with the Persehouse family demolishing Reynolds Hall so that the very profitable quarrying could continue. However, operations had ceased by the 1840's, leaving two great pits to fill up with water, both from the nearby stream and from springs and general drainage. The larger of the two pits, now lakes, was named Hatherton Lake by 1845, and the fine old row of houses now known as Victoria Terrace just to the north was in fact built as Hatherton Lake Villas by the early 1850's.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEEFDR - The Bayardo Bar attack took place on 13 August 1975 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. A unit of the Provisional IRA Belfast Brigade, led by Brendan McFarlane, launched a bombing and shooting attack on the pub on Aberdeen Street (off the loyalist Shankill Road), which was frequented by Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) members as well as civilians. Four Protestant civilians and one UVF member were killed.
According to journalists Alan Murray and Peter Taylor, it was retaliation for the Miami Showband massacre almost a fortnight earlier, when the popular Dublin-based band were ambushed by the UVF at a bogus military checkpoint. Three band members were shot dead by the UVF gunmen after their minibus was blown up in a premature explosion.
McFarlane and two other IRA volunteers, Peter Skeet Hamilton and Seamus Clarke, were sentenced to life imprisonment for perpetrating the Bayardo attack.

Crosses were originally there to remind people of their commitment to God - with the name and sometimes the shape of the structures clearly a reference to Christ's crucifixion.
They have also had many practical uses such as road and boundary markers, memorials and preaching places.
However, the purpose of the one at Lymm is a mystery. Many have commented that it resembles a market cross in a market square but there is no evidence that there has ever been a market there.
Others have suggested it used to be a place of worship before the village had its own church.
Joe added: It is a focal point of the village where everything happens. It is where the town crier does his proclamations and it is a common meeting point.
I recently did some history talks for local schools and all the children knew The Cross and had all played on The Cross.
It gives Lymm a sense of identity and is a prominent landmark for people to associate with.
