Flatus is brought to the rectum and pressurized by muscles in the intestines. It is normal to pass flatus (to fart), though volume and frequency vary greatly among individuals. It has a population of about 1,200 (2001), shown in the 2011 Census as being included in the population of Chapel-en-le-Frith. It straddles the A6 road approximately three miles north of Buxton and three miles south of Chapel-en-le-Frith. Trains run from Dove Holes railway station into Manchester.
Residents of the village live either in the village or on outlying farms. There are around six farms in the village and many more within the boundaries of the parish. There are also large limestone quarries that, over the years, have made an important contribution to the development and economy of the village. Additionally, there are several businesses. There are two public houses, one of which offers accommodation. There is a daily milk delivery service and a mobile library every fortnight. There is a church, Methodist chapel and a community centre. The village lies on the fringe of the Peak District National Park.
In 1650, a General Survey of the Manor of High Peak was made to assess the property of the late King Charles. This recorded that people were burning limestone around the village and that there were 14 kilns thereabouts, the burnt lime (quicklime) being slaked and used by farmers to condition the soil in their fields. At that time, lime kilns could be built and demolished without authority.
With the coming of the Industrial Revolution, and the opening of the Peak Forest Tramway in 1796, the limestone quarries were commercialised. The first of these was at nearby Loads Knowl and others quickly followed along Dove Holes Dale. Undoubtedly, the opening of the Peak Forest Tramway and the consequent expansion of commercial limestone quarries contributed greatly to the expansion of the village. For the first time, there was an outlet for limestone in Manchester via the Peak Forest Tramway, Bugsworth Basin, the Peak Forest Canal and the Ashton Canal.

The ECHO teamed up with Virgin Trains to help celebrate the firm's 20th birthday and invited people to come up with a name for one of their iconic Pendolinos, used on the West Coast mainline between Lime Street and Euston.
Other shortlisted suggestions for the new name included Mighty Mersey, Pride of Liverpool, Merseyside Express and Liver Bird.
Arif Mahmood, Virgin Trains station manager for Liverpool Lime Street said the response to the competition had been overwhelming.

During the 19th century celebrants began using the carnival as an opportunity to mock the military forces occupying the city's fortress. The uniforms of the carnival guards are still reminders of the uniforms of the Austrian, Prussian, and French troops which were present in the town between 1792 and 1866. Others, like the Landsknecht uniform of the Weisenauer Burggrafengarde trace their lineage as far back as the middle-ages. Uniform parts of the electoral troops are also present. The guards, who spoof military habits and oaths, have a big role in the street carnival, making up large portions of the parades. The Mainzer Rosenmontagszug is highly renowned among the parades. It had been recorded since 1910 on film, and is often broadcast live nationwide. It is less formal than many parades, as celebrants can and often do join in to walk the parade route for a brief time. Marchers are often very informal about their roles, sometimes drinking beer as they ride parade floats.
Political commentary and caricature have become a notable part of the Mainz carnival, and especially of its parades. For example, floats during one parade in the late 1980s showed Uncle Sam and a Russian soldier climbing out of suits of armor, and portrayed Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev in a bathtub.

An anonymous campaigner says residents of the saucily-named street have become a 'laughing stock', with children who live there bullied and teased at school.
A statement accompanying the change.org petition, entitled Bell End Road Name Change, says: As you may be aware, the term Bell End can be seen and used as a rude and/or a offensive word.
As well as this, it can affect people and children including children being bullied and teased at school and generally now become a laughing stock as seen very recently on Facebook and other social media sites and it's time for a change.
We want the local Sandwell Council to acknowledge our name change request to a new road name and at the very least to a similar name.
The petition suggests changing the street's name to Bell Road.
Bell End ? which leads onto Mincing Lane ? has become so well known over the years that people have travelled from outside the area to have their picture taken next to its street sign.
Rowley Regis councillor Barbara Price said she could understand residents' concerns and has vowed to meet with council bosses to discuss Bell End.
If some people find the name offensive and children are being teased about where they live then there is obviously an issue, she said.
I will be consulting with residents and speaking to the cabinet member in question to see if anything can be done.
But Bell End resident councillor Chris Tranter claims the name should not be changed. He said: I was born here and lived here for 40 years and it doesn't bother me. You get the odd giggle o

A lifelong resident of Knotty Ash in Liverpool, Dodd's career as an entertainer started in the mid-1950s. His performances included rapid and incessant delivery of often surreal jokes, and would run for several hours, frequently past midnight. His verbal and physical comedy was supplemented by his red, white and blue tickling stick prop, and often introduced by his characteristic upbeat greeting of How tickled I am! He interspersed the comedy with songs, both serious and humorous, and with his original speciality, ventriloquism. He also had several hit singles primarily as a ballad singer in the 1960s, and occasionally appeared in dramatic roles. He performed on radio and television, and popularised the characters of the Diddy Men.
Dodd was described as the last great music hall entertainer.[14] His stand-up comedy style was fast and relied on the rapid delivery of one-liner jokes. He said that his comic influences included other Liverpool comedians like Arthur Askey, Robb Wilton, Tommy Handley and the cheeky chappy from Brighton, Max Miller
Dodd had many hit records, charting on 18 occasions in the UK Top 40, including his first single Love Is Like a Violin (1960), produced on Decca Records by Alex Wharton, which charted at number 8 (UK). His version of Bill Anderson's song Happiness charted in 1964 and became Dodd's signature song

An anonymous campaigner says residents of the saucily-named street have become a 'laughing stock', with children who live there bullied and teased at school.
A statement accompanying the change.org petition, entitled Bell End Road Name Change, says: As you may be aware, the term Bell End can be seen and used as a rude and/or a offensive word.
As well as this, it can affect people and children including children being bullied and teased at school and generally now become a laughing stock as seen very recently on Facebook and other social media sites and it's time for a change.
We want the local Sandwell Council to acknowledge our name change request to a new road name and at the very least to a similar name.
The petition suggests changing the street's name to Bell Road.
Bell End ? which leads onto Mincing Lane ? has become so well known over the years that people have travelled from outside the area to have their picture taken next to its street sign.
Rowley Regis councillor Barbara Price said she could understand residents' concerns and has vowed to meet with council bosses to discuss Bell End.
If some people find the name offensive and children are being teased about where they live then there is obviously an issue, she said.
I will be consulting with residents and speaking to the cabinet member in question to see if anything can be done.
But Bell End resident councillor Chris Tranter claims the name should not be changed. He said: I was born here and lived here for 40 years and it doesn't bother me. You get the odd giggle o
