Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6FR - The sculpture A Monument to Vimto located in Vimto Park on Granby Row, Manchester M1 7HR, England, UK. The artwork commemorates the creation of the Vimto soft drink, which was first developed on this site in 1908 by John Noel Nichols. A Monument to Vimto is a public sculpture located in Vimto Park on Granby Row, Manchester M1 7HR, within an area that now forms part of the University of Manchester campus. The monument marks the exact site where Vimto was first created in 1908 by Manchester entrepreneur John Noel Nichols, originally developed as a herbal health tonic.
While Vimto is a familiar British soft drink, it has achieved exceptional cultural significance during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, where it is widely regarded as a traditional iftar drink and is consumed when the daily fast is broken at sunset. In many Middle Eastern countries and Muslim communities worldwide, Vimto is so closely associated with Ramadan that it is often colloquially described as the unofficial drink of Ramadan, reflecting custom rather than formal designation.
The sculpture itself takes the form of an oversized Vimto bottle surrounded by stylised fruit elements, referencing both the drink's flavour profile and its historic branding, including the slogan Vimto ? The Ideal Beverage. Vimto Park was created as part of city-centre regeneration and named to acknowledge the drink's Manchester origins and its journey from local invention to global cultural icon.
Photographed in daylight, the image documents a distinctive Manchester landmark that connects industrial heritage, global consumer culture and multicultural traditions, illustrating how a product invented in Edwardian Manchester became embedded in religious and social practices far beyond the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T20EG8 - Coprinus comatus, commonly known as the shaggy ink cap, lawyer's wig, or shaggy mane, is a common fungus often seen growing on lawns, along gravel roads and waste areas. The young fruit bodies first appear as white cylinders emerging from the ground, then the bell-shaped caps open out. The caps are white, and covered with scales?this is the origin of the common names of the fungus. The gills beneath the cap are white, then pink, then turn black and deliquesce ('melt') into a black liquid filled with spores (hence the ink cap name).[2] This mushroom is unusual because it will turn black and dissolve itself in a matter of hours after being picked or depositing spores.
When young it is an excellent edible mushroom provided that it is eaten soon after being collected (it keeps very badly because of the autodigestion of its gills and cap). If long-term storage is desired, microwaving, sauteing or simmering until limp will allow the mushrooms to be stored in a refrigerator for several days or frozen. Also, placing the mushrooms in a glass of ice water will delay the decomposition for a day or two so that one has time to incorporate them into a meal. Processing or icing must be done whether for eating or storage within four to six hours of harvest to prevent undesirable changes to the mushroom. The species is cultivated in China as food.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R0MKDG - Muesli is a cold Swiss breakfast dish, the primary ingredient of which is rolled oats. Most often, it is set to soak overnight and eaten the next morning. Additional ingredients, such as grains, nuts, seeds, and fresh or dried fruits, are added, along with milk or cream, a squeeze of citrus juice, and honey to add sweetness.[3] Yoghurt or other mammal or plant milk products are now commonly added to both homemade and commercially packaged muesli recipes.
Developed around 1900 by Swiss physician Maximilian Bircher-Benner for patients in his hospital,[4] it is now eaten as a standard breakfast dish, like a breakfast cereal, and in Switzerland also for supper as Bircherm?esli complet ? muesli with Caf?? complet (milk coffee, accompanied by bread, butter and jam (Butterbrot)).
In addition to being prepared raw, muesli can be toasted. Muesli can also be processed further by adding sweetener and oil to bind the ingredients together and baked to produce granola.
Etymology
Originally known in Swiss German as Bircherm?esli after its creator Bircher-Benner or simply M?esli, the word is an Alemannic diminutive of Mues (non-Swiss Standard German: Mus) meaning mush or pur??e

Gambling Commission calls for pub industry to take faster action to prevent under 18s accessing gaming machines in pubs
18 October 2019
A review of pubs in England and Wales has shown that 84% of them are failing to prevent under 18-year-olds from playing Category C gaming machines, also known as fruit machines.
Local authorities have primary responsibility for regulating these machines and businesses are responsible for ensuring that they are compliant in checking age verification. Over the last 12 months the Gambling Commission has worked with local authorities and local police to test compliance with laws in place to protect children from the risks gambling can pose.
Children are not permitted to play Category C gaming machines in pubs. Staff are expected to stop children playing on the machines and there should be clear signage indicating the age restriction.
This follows a test sample taken in 2018 which found that 88% of pubs in England failed to prevent children accessing 18+ gaming machines.
The findings suggest that the rules in place around these machines are still not being appropriately enforced and many employees are still unaware of the restrictions.
Programme Director, Helen Rhodes said: The pub industry must accelerate action to enforce these rules. Pubs must take age verification on machines as seriously as they do for alcohol sales, and they risk losing their entitlement to offer machines if they do not.
Adding: ?'The results last year were extremely disappointing and we have supported local authorities in their action to raise standards. This includes working with the providers of training to the pub industry to emphasise the legal requirements in training materials, as well as with the Home Office to work towards including materials on gambling in pubs in the curriculum for the personal licence holder

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NAWGX8 - 2018 - The end for Bell End? Petition launched to change Black Country's saucy street name - more at https://www.expressandstar.com/news/2018/01/02/end-of-the-road-for-saucy-street-name/
But the infamous Bell End in Rowley Regis could soon be a thing of the past after a petition, signed already by 11 people, was launched to change its name.
UPDATE: Pro-Bell End petition overtakes campaign to change Black Country street name
An anonymous campaigner says residents of the saucily-named street have become a 'laughing stock', with children who live there bullied and teased at school.
A statement accompanying the change.org petition, entitled Bell End Road Name Change, says: As you may be aware, the term Bell End can be seen and used as a rude and/or a offensive word.
As well as this, it can affect people and children including children being bullied and teased at school and generally now become a laughing stock as seen very recently on Facebook and other social media sites and it's time for a change.
We want the local Sandwell Council to acknowledge our name change request to a new road name and at the very least to a similar name.
The petition suggests changing the street's name to Bell Road.
Bell End ? which leads onto Mincing Lane ? has become so well known over the years that people have travelled from outside the area to have their picture taken next to its street sign.
Rowley Regis councillor Barbara Price said she could understand residents' concerns and has vowed to meet with council bosses to discuss Bell End.
If some people find the name offensive and children are being teased about where they live then there is obviously an issue, she said.
I will be consulting with residents and speaking to the cabinet member in question to see if anything can be done.
But Bell End resident councillor Chris Tranter claims the name should not be changed. He said: I was born here and lived here for 40 years and it doesn't bother me. You get the odd giggle o

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTWGJB - Sambucus is a genus of flowering plants in the family Adoxaceae. The various species are commonly referred to as elder, elderflower or elderberry. The genus was formerly placed in the honeysuckle family, Caprifoliaceae, but was reclassified as Adoxaceae due to genetic and morphological comparisons to plants in the genus Adoxa.
Flowers of European black elder
Description
The oppositely arranged leaves are pinnate with 5?9 leaflets (or, rarely, 3 or 11). Each leaf is 5?30 cm (2?12 in) long, and the leaflets have serrated margins. They bear large clusters of small white or cream-colored flowers in late spring
these are followed by clusters of small black, blue-black, or red berries (rarely yellow or white).
Color
Structure of anthocyanins, the blue pigments in elderberries
Sambucus fruit is rich in anthocyanidins[3] that combine to give elderberry juice an intense blue-purple coloration that turns reddish on dilution with water. These pigments are used as colorants in various products, and elderberry juice color is listed by the US FDA as allowable in certified organic food products. In Japan, elderberry juice is listed as an approved natural color additive under the Food and Sanitation Law. Fibers can be dyed with elderberry juice (using alum as a mordant) to give a muted purple shade.
Toxicity
Although the cooked berries (pulp and skin) of most species of Sambucus are edible, the uncooked berries and other parts of plants from this genus are poisonous. Leaves, twigs, branches, seeds, roots, flowers, and berries of Sambucus plants produce cyanogenic glycosides, which have toxic properties.[10] Ingesting a sufficient quantity of cyanogenic glycosides from berry juice, flower tea, or beverages made from fresh leaves, branches, and fruit has been shown to cause illness, including nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and weakness. In August 1983, a group of 25 people in Monterey County, California, became ill after ingesting elderberry juice pressed f

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTD3KB - Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden is a historic walled garden in Grappenhall, Warrington, Cheshire, England. The garden was built by Thomas Parr around 1830 as both a pleasure garden for relaxing strolls and as a kitchen garden to produce fruit, vegetables, and herbs. After a period of decline, the garden was restored first by English Partnerships and then by the local parish council in conjunction with the friends of the garden
The walled garden was built around 1830 by Warrington banker Thomas Parr to accompany a mansion house. Thomas Parr's father, Joseph Parr, founded Parr's Bank and Thomas was appointed Chairman of the bank. Before opening the bank, Joseph Parr had made his wealth in the sugar refining industry that supported the slave trade in the British West Indies. Parr's bank amalgamated through acquisitions into the NatWest.
Unusually, Parr included both a pleasure garden and a kitchen garden within the same boundary wall. In addition to enjoying their garden, the Parr family held frequent galas and special events for the community. One annual event called Beating the Bounds involved a walk around the boundaries of the townships of Lymm, Appleton, and Grappenhall, which included the garden. Historical records suggest that the estate was at its height from 1875 to 1899.
By the 1950s, the estate had become derelict and parts of it were sold off. The house was demolished in the 1970s and the garden passed to English Partnerships for renovation. In 2005 control of the garden passed to Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council, which continued restoration in conjunction with a community group called The Friends of Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden. In 2012 the garden was given a Heritage Lottery Fund award towards repair of the Victorian glasshouses and completion of the restoration

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTD3KP - Polypores are a group of fungi that form large fruiting bodies with pores or tubes on the underside (see Delimitation for exceptions). They are a morphological group of basidiomycetes-like gilled mushrooms and hydnoid fungi, and not all polypores are closely related to each other. Polypores are also called bracket fungi or shelf fungi, and they characteristically produce woody, shelf- or bracket-shaped or occasionally circular fruiting bodies that are called conks.
Most polypores inhabit tree trunks or branches consuming the wood, but some soil-inhabiting species form mycorrhiza with trees. Polypores and the related corticioid fungi are the most important agents of wood decay, playing a very significant role in nutrient cycling and aiding carbon dioxide absorption by forest ecosystems.
Over one thousand polypore species have been described to science, but a large part of the diversity is still unknown even in relatively well-studied temperate areas. Polypores are much more diverse in old natural forests with abundant dead wood than in younger managed forests or plantations. Consequently, a number of species have declined drastically and are under threat of extinction due to logging and deforestation.
Polypores are used in traditional medicine, and they are actively studied for their medicinal value and various industrial applications. Several polypore species are serious pathogens of plantation trees and are major causes of timber spoilage.
Conks, the fruiting bodies of polypores, lie in a close planar grouping of separate or interconnected horizontal rows. Brackets can range from only a single row of a few caps, to dozens of rows of caps that can weigh several hundred pounds.

It usually takes the form of a cylindrical stick (a stick of rock), normally 1?2.5 cm (0.39?0.98 in) in diameter and 20?25 cm (7.9?9.8 in) long. Blackpool rock is usually at least 2.5 cm (0.98 in) in diameter, and can be as thick as 17 cm (6.7 in) across and up to 2 m (6.6 ft) long when made for special retail displays. These cylinders usually have a pattern embedded throughout the length, which is often the name of the resort where the rock is sold, so that the name can be read on both ends of the stick (reversed at one end) and remains legible even after pieces are bitten off. Rock is also manufactured as a promotional item, for example with a company name running through it.
It is sometimes found in the form of individual sweets, with writing or a pattern in the centre
these are, in effect, slices of rock.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHB70F - A hot cross bun is a spiced sweet bun usually made with fruit, marked with a cross on the top, and has been traditionally eaten on Good Friday in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, India, Pakistan and the United States. They are available all year round in some places, including the UK
The bun marks the end of the Christian season of Lent and different parts of the hot cross bun have a certain meaning, including the cross representing the crucifixion of Jesus, and the spices inside signifying the spices used to embalm him at his burial and may also include orange peel to reflect the bitterness of his time on the Cross
One theory is that the contemporary hot cross bun originates from St Albans, in England, where, in 1361, Brother Thomas Rodcliffe, a 14th-century monk at St Albans Abbey, developed a similar recipe called an 'Alban Bun' and distributed the bun to the local poor on Good Friday.
In 1592, during the reign of Elizabeth I of England, the London Clerk of Markets issued a decree forbidding the sale of hot cross buns and other spiced breads, except at burials, on Good Friday, or at Christmas. The punishment for transgressing the decree was forfeiture of all the forbidden product to the poor. As a result of this decree, hot cross buns at the time were primarily made in domestic kitchens. Further attempts to suppress the sale of these items took place during the reign of James I of England (1603?1625)
The traditional method for making the cross on top of the bun is to use shortcrust pastry, though some 21st century recipes recommended a paste of flour and water

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3TJWB - Love Hearts are a type of confectionery manufactured by Swizzels Matlow in the United Kingdom. They are hard, tablet-shaped sweets in various fruit flavors featuring a short, love-related message on one side of the sweet. They are an updated version of Victorian-era Conversation Lozenges
On chewing, the sweet quickly disintegrates into a powdery, starchy consistency
Love Hearts currently come in six flavors, each associated with a color (listed from weakest to strongest flavor):..
White (a plain, sherbet-like, slightly tart vanilla flavor)
Yellow (a sherbet-like flavor with a distinct sharp lemon aftertaste)
Green (a slight lime flavor with a sherbet-like aftertaste)
Orange (a sweet flavor with a slight orange aftertaste)
Purple (an unusual, slightly perfumed berry-like flavor with a strong aftertaste)
Red (cherry flavor)
There are many different messages which can be found on the front of the sweet, most of which are love-related. The message is written in capitals in a sans serif font of varying size. The font is scaled and sometimes stretched out of proportion to fit the available space.
Most messages are written in simple horizontal, centrally aligned lines. There are some exceptions to this rule, including the phrase I Surrender, where the word surrender has been written in an arc around the lower inside edge of the heart outline.
The Just Say No message has an unclear layout, appearing to read Just say No.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XN94 - Rhubarb forcers are bell-shaped pots with a lidded opening at the top, used to cover rhubarb to limit photosynthesis. They encourage the plant to grow early in the season and also to produce blanched stems. The pots are placed over two- to three-year-old rhubarb crowns during winter or very early spring. Once shoots appear the lid is taken off, causing them to grow towards the light.
Around 18 inches (46 cm) high and 14 inches (36 cm) wide without the lid, they are traditionally made of terracotta but can be as simple as an upside down plastic bucket

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTAFD - Aesculus hippocastanum is a large tree, growing to about 39 metres (128 ft) tall with a domed crown of stout branches
on old trees the outer branches are often pendulous with curled-up tips. The leaves are opposite and palmately compound, with 5?7 leaflets
each leaflet is 13?30 cm long, making the whole leaf up to 60 cm across, with a 7?20 cm petiole. The leaf scars left on twigs after the leaves have fallen have a distinctive horseshoe shape, complete with seven nails. The flowers are usually white with a yellow to pink blotch at the base of the petals
they are produced in spring in erect panicles 10?30 cm tall with about 20?50 flowers on each panicle. Usually only 1?5 fruit develop on each panicle
the shell is a green, spiky capsule containing one (rarely two or three) nut-like seeds called conkers or horse-chestnuts. Each conker is 2?4 cm diameter, glossy nut-brown with a whitish scar at the base.
The common name horse-chestnut (often unhyphenated) is reported as having originated from the erroneous belief that the tree was a kind of chestnut (though in fact only distantly related), together with the observation that the fruit could help panting horses.
Aesculus hippocastanum is native to a small area in the Pindus Mountains mixed forests and Balkan mixed forests of South East Europe. However, it can be found in many parts of Europe as far north as G??strikland in Sweden, as well as in many parks and cities in the United States and Canada.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PBRY2N - The cultivation of the domesticated grape began 6,000?8,000 years ago in the Near East. Yeast, one of the earliest domesticated microorganisms, occurs naturally on the skins of grapes, leading to the discovery of alcoholic drinks such as wine. The earliest archeological evidence for a dominant position of wine-making in human culture dates from 8,000 years ago in Georgia. The oldest known winery was found in Armenia, dating to around 4000 BC.
By the 9th century AD the city of Shiraz was known to produce some of the finest wines in the Middle East. Thus it has been proposed that Syrah red wine is named after Shiraz, a city in Persia where the grape was used to make Shirazi wine. Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics record the cultivation of purple grapes, and history attests to the ancient Greeks, Phoenicians, and Romans growing purple grapes for both eating and wine production. The growing of grapes would later spread to other regions in Europe, as well as North Africa, and eventually in North America.
In North America, native grapes belonging to various species of the genus Vitis proliferate in the wild across the continent, and were a part of the diet of many Native Americans, but were considered by European colonists to be unsuitable for wine. Vitis vinifera cultivars were imported for that purpose.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PBRY40 - Helianthus annuus, the common sunflower, is a large annual forb of the genus Helianthus grown as a crop for its edible oil and edible fruits. This sunflower species is also used as wild bird food, as livestock forage (as a meal or a silage plant), in some industrial applications, and as an ornamental in domestic gardens. The plant was first domesticated in the Americas. Wild Helianthus annuus is a widely branched annual plant with many flower heads. The domestic sunflower, however, often possesses only a single large inflorescence (flower head) atop an unbranched stem. The name sunflower may derive from the flower's head's shape, which resembles the sun, or from the impression that the blooming plant appears to slowly turn its flower towards the sun as the latter moves across the sky on a daily basis.
Sunflower seeds were brought to Europe from the Americas in the 16th century, where, along with sunflower oil, they became a widespread cooking ingredient.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHBJPE - Covent Garden is a district in London, on the eastern fringes of the West End, between St Martin's Lane and Drury Lane. It is associated with the former fruit-and-vegetable market in the central square, now a popular shopping and tourist site, and with the Royal Opera House, itself known as Covent Garden. The district is divided by the main thoroughfare of Long Acre, north of which is given over to independent shops centred on Neal's Yard and Seven Dials, while the south contains the central square with its street performers and most of the historical buildings, theatres and entertainment facilities, including the London Transport Museum and the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.
By 1654 a small open-air fruit-and-vegetable market had developed on the south side of the fashionable square. Gradually, both the market and the surrounding area fell into disrepute, as taverns, theatres, coffee-houses and brothels opened up. By the 18th century it had become notorious for its abundance of brothels. An Act of Parliament was drawn up to control the area, and Charles Fowler's neo-classical building was erected in 1830 to cover and help organise the market. The market grew and further buildings were added: the Floral Hall, Charter Market, and in 1904 the Jubilee Market. By the end of the 1960s traffic congestion was causing problems, and in 1974 the market relocated to the New Covent Garden Market about three miles (5 km) south-west at Nine Elms. The central building re-opened as a shopping centre in 1980 and is now a tourist location containing cafes, pubs, small shops, and a craft market called the Apple Market, along with another market held in the Jubilee Hall.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H4EGB7 - At Granby Row, 2011, the grapes and raspberries have been restored with the grapes changing from red to green to reflect the ingredients of Vimto, while the blackcurrants have been replaced. A new wooded barrel has been constructed to replace the bottom of the Vimto bottle and new labels have been carved and painted.
The monument was first carved by Kerry Morrison and installed in Granby Row in 1992. Granby Row is the site of the factory where the first batch of Vimto was made by John Noel Nichols back in 1908.
After 19 years of the Manchester weather and attention from city revellers, the monument was in need of a refresh and it has been brought back to its former glory by Nick Lumb at Acorn Furniture in Wrexham.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GY19WJ - Maize also known as corn, is a cereal grain first domesticated by indigenous peoples in southern Mexico about 10,000 years ago. The leafy stalk of the plant produces pollen inflorescences and separate ovuliferous inflorescences called ears that yield kernels or seeds, which are fruits.
Maize has become a staple food in many parts of the world, with the total production of maize surpassing that of wheat or rice. However, little of this maize is consumed directly by humans: most is used for corn ethanol, animal feed and other maize products, such as corn starch and corn syrup. The six major types of maize are dent corn, flint corn, pod corn, popcorn, flour corn, and sweet corn.
Maize is widely cultivated throughout the world, and a greater weight of maize is produced each year than any other grain. In 2014, total world production was 1.04 billion tonnes, led by the United States with 35% of the total. China produced 21% of the global total.
In 2016, maize (corn) production was forecast to be over 15 billion bushels, an increase of 11% over 2014 American production. Based on conditions as of August 2016, the expected yield would be the highest ever for the United States. The area of harvested maize was forecast to be 87 million acres, an increase of 7% over 2015. Maize is especially popular in Midwestern states such as Indiana and Illinois
in the latter, it was named the state's official grain in 2017

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9ETJ - A mince pie is a small British fruit-based mincemeat sweet pie traditionally served during the Christmas season. Its ingredients are traceable to the 13th century, when returning European crusaders brought with them Middle Eastern recipes containing meats, fruits and spices.
The early mince pie was known by several names, including mutton pie, shrid pie and Christmas pie. Typically its ingredients were a mixture of minced meat, suet, a range of fruits, and spices such as cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Served around Christmas, the savoury Christmas pie (as it became known) was associated with supposed Catholic idolatry and during the English Civil War was frowned on by the Puritan authorities. Nevertheless, the tradition of eating Christmas pie in December continued through to the Victorian era, although by then its recipe had become sweeter and its size reduced markedly from the large oblong shape once observed. Today the mince pie remains a popular seasonal treat enjoyed by many across the United Kingdom.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DJ7B0B - Beer in Belgium varies from pale lager to lambic beer and Flemish red. There are approximately 180 breweries in the country, ranging from international giants to microbreweries
Beer in Belgium dates back to the age of the first crusades, long before Belgium became an independent country. Under Catholic church permission, local French and Flemish abbeys brewed and distributed beer as a fund raising method. The relatively low-alcohol beer of that time was preferred as a sanitary option to available drinking water. What are now traditional, artisanal brewing methods evolved, under abbey supervision, during the next seven centuries.
The Trappist monasteries that now brew beer in Belgium were occupied in the late 18th century primarily by monks fleeing the French Revolution. However, the first Trappist brewery in Belgium (Westmalle) did not start operation until 10 December 1836, almost 50 years after the Revolution. That beer was exclusively for the monks and is described as dark and sweet. The first recorded sale of beer (a brown beer) was on 1 June 1861

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNTK - This image shows traditional sweet shop weighing scales positioned in front of shelves packed with hundreds of old-style British sweet jars, creating a vivid display of classic confectionery retail. The glass jars, typically used for penny sweets and loose confectionery, evoke memories of independent sweet shops that were once common on British high streets.
The scene reflects a pre-digital retail experience, where sweets were weighed by hand using mechanical or analogue scales, rather than pre-packaged for self-service. Such displays are strongly associated with childhood nostalgia, heritage shopping, and the enduring appeal of traditional British confectionery.
The image is well suited for editorial and commercial use illustrating nostalgia, retail heritage, food culture, British high street history, and consumer traditions, as well as themes around craft retail, independent shops, and retro design

they are on average smaller than round plums but larger than mirabelle plums (usually between 2 and 4 cm diameter).
The skin ranges in colour from green to yellowish, with a pale blue blush in some cultivars
a few Reine Claudes ? such as 'Graf Althanns' ?, are reddish-purple due to crossbreeding with other plums. Greengages are grown in temperate areas and are known for the rich, confectionery flavour. They are considered to be among the finest dessert plums.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCE73P - Inside The famous Anchor Tap
Situated on the south side of the Thames in the Tower Bridge Conservation Area, this historic Southwark pub offers a truly traditional English experience. From the fish and chip suppers served, to the string of clearly designated separate rooms, upright piano, games room and open fire this pub effortlessly captures old-fashioned England.
Within the dark, oak walls of this late 18th century, former dock-workers pub, one of the most quintessentially English inventions took seed. Dr Samuel Johnson compiled his English dictionary in a special room inside The Anchor Tap. Originally a place for brewery employees to sample the fruits of their labour, a Tap Room was traditionally set up near its parent brewery.
The Anchor Tap was the first such establishment set up by British brewing legends, John Courage, and was located in close proximity to the former Anchor Brewery and the old Hop Exchange on Borough High Street. The Anchor Tap is an unpretentious, wharfside treasure offering a simple taste of a bygone English age.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYNH2 - The Sutton is one of the heaviest yielding rhubarbs, with heavy yields of solid quality stems. Also known as Suttons Seedless this rhubarb is a mid-season cropper, best harvested in May or perhaps June in the North.
Browse our variety of rhubarb plants and crowns or see our full range of soft fruit bushes for sale.
Growing The Sutton:
As with all rhubarb, deep, rich soil with good drainage is important. Rhubarb roots grow deep so good preparation pays dividends - dig in plenty of well rotted manure and/or compost before planting. If rhubarb crowns get too damp in winter, they will rot and die, so if there is any doubt over drainage mound the rhubarb bed so the crowns are above ground level. Never cover them with mulch.
The ideal soil for rhubarb is neutral to slightly acidic
it will tolerate quite acidic soil, but yields will be smaller. Chalk or limestone soils are less suitable and need more improvement.
Spacing: The Sutton rhubarb is a big plant so increase spacing a bit and plant about 110 cms apart in a sunny position as rhubarb hates the shade.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYNWH - Long, scarlet stems that have a deliciously sweet taste. Though an old variety, it is easy to grow, reliable and early. Perfect for fertile, well-drained areas of the vegetable garden or allotment, once planted it should not be moved and appreciates a generous annual mulch of well-rotted compost or manure.
Garden care:Rhubarb crowns (or sets) are sent out in a packet containing a little compost, but are generally considered as ?bare root'. They will just look like a section of root, but as soon as they arrive they should be unpacked and planted out within a few days. Potted rhubarb can be planted out at any time of the year provided the ground is not frozen.
Rhubarb needs an open, sunny spot with fertile, moist but freely-draining soil. Heavy soils should be avoided as overly-wet conditions in winter may rot the crowns. Rhubarb does need a cold period before it will start to put on new growth in spring, however hard frosts may damage the newly emerging growth, so try not to plant in a frost pocket if you can. Prepare the bed well by removing weeds and digging in composted manure, and plant the crowns at intervals of 75cm - 1m, making sure the dormant buds are just below the surface of the soil. Keep well watered and in spring apply a dressing of composted manure, making sure you avoid covering the crown of the plant. Sulphate of ammonia can be applied in summer. It is important that the stalks are not harvested in their first year as this will adversely affect the plants vigour, but cut any old, yellow leaves off after they have faded and remove all the leaves after they have died back in autumn. You should also remove any flowering stalks which appear. In the second year, you may start to harvest some of the stems, but restrict yourself to between a third and a half of the total crop, leaving the rest to mature on the plant. In subsequent years, stems can be harvested from late spring up until mid to late summer.

Eighteen is a composite number, its proper divisors being 1, 2, 3, 6 and 9. Three of these divisors (3, 6 and 9) add up to 18, hence 18 is a semiperfect number. Eighteen is the first inverted square-prime of the form p.q2.
It is a heptagonal number, and as the sum of the first three pentagonal numbers, it is a pentagonal pyramidal number. It is also the sum of the totient function for the first seven integers. It is the sixth lucas number.
Eighteen is the second abundant number with the aliquot sum of 21 (117% in abundance) in the aliquot sequence (18, 21, 11, 1, 0) thus being the first composite number in the 11-aliquot tree. Eighteen is the aliquot sum of only one number the square 289.
In base 10 it is a Harshad number.
18, aside from 0, is the only number that equals twice the sum of its decimal digits.
There are 18 chapters in the Bhagavad Gita, which is contained in the Mahabharata, which has 18 books. The Kurukshetra War which the epic depicts, is between 18 armies (11 on the Kuru side, 7 on the Pandava). 18 is the number of holes in a stipulated round of golf and in a standard Swiss Romont reserve Gruyere.
Enjoy this fine track from Alice Cooper.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8FBDP - An ear is the grain-bearing tip part of the stem of a cereal plant, such as wheat or maize. It can also refer to a prominent lobe in some leaves.
The ear is a spike, consisting of a central stem on which grows tightly packed rows of flowers. These develop into fruits containing the edible seeds. In corn, it is protected by leaves called husks.
In some species (including wheat), unripe ears contribute significantly to photosynthesis, in addition to the leaves lower down the plant.
A parasite known as Anguina tritici (Ear Cockle) specifically affects the ears on wheat and rye by destroying the tissues and stems during growth. With exception to North Africa and West Asia, the parasite has been eradicated in all countries by using the crop rotation system

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4693898753 - 'June is the start of the appearance of the British strawberry. Much prized later in the month and sold at great expense at Wimbledon. Earlier spanish fruit is generally on sale, this is very forced and to my taste not as favourful as the native fruit in season.
Strawberry is a genus of plants (Fragaria) in the family Rosaceae. Traditionally, part of the british strawberry's appeal is that its short, six-week season which co-ordinates with the brief, long-awaited British summer. These days, however, the British strawberry season extends from mid-April until mid-December, thanks to the increased use of forcing via plastic polytunnels.
These provide the berries with a warmer, more protected environment - and a much longer growing season, while managing to blight a lot of our local landscape. Regretably, just one variety of strawberry, Elsanta, accounts for 80 per cent of the British fruit sold in UK supermarket. Many other varieties are available from farmers' markets and pick-your-own farms and if you have a real interest in the food you eat, search a little harder to discover them. Your taste buds will thank you!
If you buy them chilled, let them warm up before eating. Try stirring them into melted chocolate or mashed up with meringues and whipped cream to form 'Eton Mess'. I had some of this only last night and it reminded me how brilliant those often over looked summer deserts actually are.
Back in my days working in Higher Openshaw, east Manchester I was close to the Robertsons jam factory in Droylesden. This was built in 1891, and closed in 2008, demolished in 2010. Reject strawberry jam was prized by the workers, due to its over abundence of fruit. A few of my friends had relatives working there and if they could get hold of a few jars, the more the better!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HG6TD2 - The pomegranate (/??p?m毐r??nt/), botanical name Punica granatum, is a fruit-bearing deciduous shrub or small tree in the family Lythraceae that grows between 5 and 8 m (16 and 26 ft) tall.
The fruit is typically in season in the Northern Hemisphere from September to February, and in the Southern Hemisphere from March to May. As intact arils or juice, pomegranates are used in baking, cooking, juice blends, meal garnishes, smoothies, and alcoholic beverages, such as cocktails and wine.
The pomegranate originated in the region of modern-day Iran, and has been cultivated since ancient times throughout the Mediterranean region and northern India.[3] It was introduced into Spanish America in the late 16th century and California, by Spanish settlers, in 1769.
Today, it is widely cultivated throughout the Middle East and Caucasus region, north and tropical Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Central Asia, the drier parts of southeast Asia, and parts of the Mediterranean Basin. It is also cultivated in parts of Arizona and California. In recent years, it has become more common in the commercial markets of Europe and the Western Hemisphere

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF221G - The Peleides Blue Morpho (Morpho peleides) is an iridescent tropical butterfly found in Mexico, Central America, northern South America,Paraguay and Trinidad. The example shown here is emerging from its Chrysalis and will soon be opening on a tree to dry out its damp wings.
This Butterfly drinks the juices from rotting fruits for food. Examples are mango, kiwi, and lychee.
Blue Morpho butterflies live in the rainforests of South America, and can be found in Mexico and Central America. The wingspan of the Blue Morpho butterfly ranges from 7.5 cm to 20 cm, so in theory an easy subject for macro photography.
The entire Blue Morpho Butterfly lifecycle, from egg to adult is only 115 days. The larvae of Blue Morpho Butterflies are cannibals. The caterpillar Blue Morpho Butterfly is red-brown with patches of bright green. The brilliant blue color in the butterfly's wings is caused by the diffraction of the light from millions of tiny scales on its wings. It uses this to frighten away predators, by flashing its wings rapidly. The Blue Morpho Butterflies stick together in groups to deter their predators, a form of Mobbing behavior.
In the half light of a rain forest the outer brown patterns mimic eyes this proving another defence mechanism.

The stems are broad and flat, 1?5 cm broad, 3?5 mm thick, usually with lobed edges. The flowers are large, 8?16 cm diameter, white to red, with numerous petals.
The fruit is edible, very similar to the pitaya fruit from the closely related genus Hylocereus, though not so large, being only 3?4 cm long.
Fruit of Epiphyllum anguliger
Epiphyllums are popular house plants, with numerous hybrids and cultivars. The broad-leaved epiphyllum (Epiphyllum oxypetalum) is particularly well-known. It bears large, strongly fragrant flowers, that bloom for a single night only.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3690682655 - 'A bowl of lovely orange ripe apricots.
The apricot (Prunus armeniaca) is a species of Prunus, classified with the plum in the subgenus Prunus. The native range is somewhat uncertain due to its extensive prehistoric cultivation.
The apricot was known in Armenia during ancient times, and has been cultivated there for so long it is often thought to be native there. Its scientific name Prunus armeniaca (Armenian plum) derives from that assumption. For example, De Poerderl\u00e9, writing in the 18th century, asserted 'Cet arbre tire son nom de l'Arm\u00e9nie, province d'Asie, d'o\u00f9 il est originaire et d'o\u00f9 il fut port\u00e9 en Europe ...' ('this tree takes its name from Armenia, province of Asia, where it is native, and whence it was brought to Europe ...'). An archaeological excavation at Garni in Armenia found apricot seeds in an Eneolithic-era site. However, the Vavilov center of origin locates the origin of the apricot's domestication in the Chinese region, and other sources say the apricot was first cultivated in India in about 3000 BC.
Its introduction to Greece is attributed to Alexander the Great, and the Roman General Lucullus (106\u201357 B.C.) also exported some trees \u2013 the cherry, white heart cherry, and apricot \u2013 from Armenia to Europe. Subsequent sources were often confused about the origin of the species. Loudon (1838) believed it had a wide native range including Armenia, Caucasus, the Himalaya, China, and Japan.
Today the cultivars have spread to all parts of the globe with climates that support it.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JM9P39 - A slot machine (American English), fruit machine (British English) or poker machine (Australian English and New Zealand English) is a gambling machine that creates a game of chance for its customers. Slot machines are also known pejoratively as one-armed bandits because of the large mechanical levers affixed to the sides of early mechanical machines and the games' ability to empty players' pockets and wallets as thieves would.[1]
A slot machine's standard layout features a screen displaying three or more reels that spin when the game is activated. Some modern slot machines still include a lever as a skeuomorphic design trait to trigger play. However, the mechanics of early machines have been superseded by random number generators, and most are now operated using buttons and touchscreens.
Slot machines include one or more currency detectors that validate the form of payment, whether coin, cash, voucher, or token. The machine pays out according to the pattern of symbols displayed when the reels stop spinning. Slot machines are the most popular gambling method in casinos and constitute about 70% of the average U.S. casino's income.[2]
Digital technology has resulted in variations in the original slot machine concept. As the player is essentially playing a video game, manufacturers can offer more interactive elements, such as advanced bonus rounds and more varied video graphics.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED4M2N - Banksy is a pseudonymous England-based street artist, political activist and film director whose real name and identity remain unconfirmed and the subject of speculation. Active since the 1990s, his satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine dark humour with graffiti executed in a distinctive stenciling technique. His works of political and social commentary have appeared on streets, walls and bridges throughout the world. Banksy's work grew out of the Bristol underground scene, which involved collaborations between artists and musicians. Banksy says that he was inspired by 3D, a graffiti artist and founding member of the musical group Massive Attack.
Banksy displays his art on publicly visible surfaces such as walls and self-built physical prop pieces. Banksy no longer sells photographs or reproductions of his street graffiti, but his public installations are regularly resold, often even by removing the wall they were painted on. Much of his work can be classified as temporary art. A small number of Banksy's works are officially, non-publicly, sold through an agency created by Banksy named Pest Control. Banksy's documentary film Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010) made its debut at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. In January 2011, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for the film. In 2014, he was awarded Person of the Year at the 2014 Webby Awards.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCE6YR - Outside the Anchor Tap

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HDK8 - A vivid close-up image of fresh British strawberries, featuring one strawberry cut cleanly in half to reveal its pale interior flesh, radiating white core, and dense pattern of tiny edible seeds set into the bright red skin. The surrounding whole strawberries create a richly textured background, emphasising the fruit's ripeness, natural sheen and intense colour, which are strongly associated with peak summer harvest in the United Kingdom.
Strawberries are one of Britain's most recognisable seasonal fruits and are closely linked to early summer, outdoor eating and local produce. The macro perspective highlights the delicate surface texture, moisture and structural detail of the fruit, drawing attention to its freshness and natural form rather than any artificial presentation. The green calyx remains attached, reinforcing the impression of recently picked produce and minimal handling.
The image conveys themes of seasonal abundance, healthy eating and natural food production. Strawberries are widely associated with vitamins, antioxidants and plant-based diets, and their visual appeal makes them a staple subject for food publishing, packaging and marketing. The strong red colour palette, fine detail and shallow depth of field give the image high impact for both editorial and commercial use.
This photograph is well suited for editorial use covering food, nutrition, agriculture, seasonal eating and British produce, as well as commercial applications such as food marketing, packaging design, recipe illustration, health campaigns and lifestyle content focused on freshness, quality and summer produce.
