In 2022 the museum received 4,097,253 visitors, an increase of 209 per cent from 2021. It ranked third in the list of most-visited art museums in the world.
The museum was established in 1753, largely based on the collections of the Anglo-Irish physician and scientist Sir Hans Sloane. It first opened to the public in 1759, in Montagu House, on the site of the current building. The museum's expansion over the following 250 years was largely a result of British colonisation and resulted in the creation of several branch institutions, or independent spin-offs, the first being the Natural History Museum in 1881. The right to ownership of some of its most well-known acquisitions, notably the Greek Elgin Marbles and the Egyptian Rosetta Stone, is subject to long-term disputes and repatriation claims.
In 1973, the British Library Act 1972 detached the library department from the British Museum, but it continued to host the now separated British Library in the same Reading Room and building as the museum until 1997. The museum is a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, and as with all national museums in the UK it charges no admission fee, except for loan exhibitions

From the main lines, trains can connect to the Catford Loop Line, the Dartford Loop Line, and the Oxted line to East Grinstead and Uckfield. Southern operates most commuter and regional services to south London, Sussex and parts of east Surrey, while Southeastern operates trains to south-east London and Kent, alongside limited services operated by Thameslink. Gatwick Express trains run direct to Gatwick. The Underground station is on the Circle and District lines between Sloane Square and St James's Park, and the Victoria line between Pimlico and Green Park. The area around the station is an important interchange for other forms of transport: a local bus station is in the forecourt and Victoria Coach Station is nearby.
Victoria was built to serve both the Brighton and Chatham Main Lines, and has always had a split feel of being two separate stations. The Brighton station opened in 1860 with the Chatham station following two years later. It replaced a temporary terminus at Pimlico, and construction involved building the Grosvenor Bridge over the River Thames. It became immediately popular as a London terminus, causing delays and requiring upgrades and rebuilding. It was well known for luxury Pullman train services and continental boat-train trips, and became a focal point for soldiers during World War I.
Like other London termini, steam trains were phased out of Victoria by the 1960s, to be replaced by suburban electric and diesel multiple-unit services

It is a 902-seat opera house that hosts the annual Buxton Festival and the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival, among others, as well as pantomime at Christmas, musicals and other entertainments year-round. Hosting live performances until 1927, the theatre then was used mostly as a cinema until 1976. In 1979, it was refurbished and reopened as a venue for live performance.
The Buxton Opera House was built in 1903 and designed by Frank Matcham, who designed the London Palladium, the London Coliseum and many other theatres throughout the UK. The first production at the theatre was Mrs Willoughby's Kiss. The Opera House ran as a successful theatre, receiving touring companies until 1927, when it was turned into a cinema. Silent films were shown until 1932 when the theatre was wired for sound and could present talkies. The Opera House also became the venue for an annual summer theatre festival from 1936 to 1942, two of them in conjunction with Lilian Baylis and her London-based Old Vic company. People who performed at the opera house include the actor Alec Guinness, the comedians Ken Dodd, Peter Kay, Harry Hill, Sarah Millican and John Bishop, the musical artists Howard Jones, Aled Jones, Leo Sayer and Razorlight, and the ballerina Anna Pavlova.
After the Second World War, the theatre continued to serve primarily as a cinema. The building was designated a Grade II* listed building in 1970. The Opera House gradually fell into disrepair.
In 1979, the building was restored, and an orchestra pit was added to the original Matcham design. Since then, the Opera House has been a full-time venue for stage productions, presenting approximately 450 performances per year

The building was designed in the style of a French ch?teau (with a mansard roof crested with iron railings, Venetian windows and a clocktower with a cupola) by Manchester architect William Pollard (who also designed Buxton College's Gothic-style 'new building' in 1880). After the Market Hall (designed by Henry Currey) was destroyed by a fire in September 1885, the site was selected for the new town hall. The fire brigade with the town's new fire engine was unable to control the fire started by a paraffin lamp in one of the shops in the Market Hall. A competition was held in 1886 for the design of the new town hall. William Pollard's design won the ?50 prize and James Salt's local firm was selected to build it at a tender of ?8,900 (Salt also built the Entertainment Stage theatre, which is now the Pavilion Arts Centre). The chairman of the governing Local Board, Edward Milligan, laid the foundation stone in June 1887 (the year of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria). The Marquess of Hartington conducted the official opening of the town hall on 26 June 1889.
The clock on the clock tower was a gift from the Duke of Devonshire's tenants in 1889, in honour of Lord Frederick Cavendish, who was stabbed to death aged 45 in the Phoenix Park Murders in Dublin in May 1882 (shortly after arriving to take up his new post as Chief Secretary for Ireland). There is a bust of Lord Cavendish (son of the 7th Duke of Devonshire) on display inside the town hall
Current use - High Peak Borough Council, formed in 1974, presently has administrative centres at Buxton Town Hall and Glossop Town Hall. Full Council meetings are usually held in Buxton or at Chapel-en-le-Frith Town Hall

Walking around Weaver Square in Northwich, past its many vacant units, you'd struggle to imagine it was once a hive of retail activity. Years ago, hundreds of shoppers would visit daily, drawn by big names like Woolworths and Argos.
Fast-forward to the present day and it is scarcely recognisable. Half of the complex has been demolished, most of the units lie empty and the crowds have long disappeared elsewhere, as online shopping continues to eat away at the high street's fortunes.
Northwich's Cllr Sam Naylor said: It's been tragic. We've seen it decline from what was a thriving, 70s-style shopping precinct into a scene, not of dereliction, but something that smacks of a past era of post-war modern Britain.
Following the recent and sad closure of the much-loved Seafarer, many residents questioned what was happening with the long-planned redevelopment of Weaver Square, which lies mere feet away from the chippy.
Cheshire West and Chester Council acquired the lease of the site back in 2014, by which time many of the units already stood empty. The authority took it over after the previous owner of Weaver Square ceased trading in 2012.
Since then, there have been a number of ideas about what do with the site. But the shopping centre continued to lie mostly-dormant, despite it being partly-demolished in 2019 amid promises of regeneration.
Northwich would then be hit by misfortune after misfortune : the outdoor market was gutted by fire in early 2020
the Covid pandemic caused economic chaos across the world
the devastating flooding in 2021 left many businesses badly damaged
and the town's railway station collapsed in April last year.

The Georgian frontage was added in 1753 although the size of the building was reduced in the 1890s when a decline in trade resulted in part of the front being turned into a shop. It wasn't until 1936 that the Kings left private ownership and was bought by the Friary Brewery of Guildford which later became part of Allied Breweries.
We've had a few famous guests over the years including Tsar Peter the Great (who left without paying his bill!) as well as some European royalty who met here in 1814 to discuss post war Europe after the Battle of Trafalgar. Tsar Peter the Great's visit is commemorated by a plaque on the front of the building which was unveiled in 1998 by the Russian Ambassador to commemorate the tricentenary of the visit.

Warrington Borough Council's move into its offices in Time Square is bringing significant savings for the local authority, new figures show.
The council relocated from the New Town House site, and other administrative buildings, in late 2020/early 2021, to reduce the excessive running costs of the outdated office accommodation, and provide a better, modern environment for staff and customers.
With council staff now having been at the ?23m ?1 Time Square' building for the past 18 months ? which is a much more efficient building than the previous New Town House site - financial analysis shows that the move to the building is saving the council almost three quarters of a million pounds each year.
Previously, the council paid an annual rent and service charge for the New Town House and Quattro buildings, on top of costs such as business rates and maintenance. In addition, the council paid the running costs of its Rylands Street offices and the Customer Contact Centre on Horsemarket Street. The total equivalent cost for this was ?3.1m per year.
As part of the move to Time Square, the council purchased New Town House and Quattro, to fix repayment costs and avoid the uncontrollable escalation associated with leasing the buildings, including being exposed to increasing energy costs in an inefficient building.
Under this new operation, the equivalent costs to the council ? covering the borrowing costs for the building of 1 Time Square and its running costs, along with the continuing annual borrowing costs for purchasing the New Town House and Quattro buildings - are ?2.3m. This represents an annual saving for the council of ?741,000 a year.

It was established by John Hargreaves in 1985, and is still owned by the Hargreaves family. John Hargreaves opened the first Matalan store in 1985 at Bamber Bridge, near Preston, Lancashire. There were fifty stores by 1995, and in 1997, the company moved its headquarters from Preston to Skelmersdale, also in Lancashire. The company was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1998, but taken private again by the Hargreaves family in October 2006.
During 2009, John Hargreaves sought to sell off Matalan, but by February 2010, had failed to find buyers willing to meet the ?1.5 billion price.[4] Jason Hargreaves was appointed managing director in July 2013. The headquarters moved to a purpose built site at Knowsley, Merseyside in 2014. The company won approval for this scheme in October 2012.
Controversy
Matalan was among the companies who sourced clothes from the Rana Plaza factory in Bangladesh which collapsed, killing 1,134, in April 2013. In July 2014, they were the focus of a campaign by 38 Degrees and Labour Behind the Label, for failing to contribute to the official compensation fund coordinated by the ILO. This was in contrast to some of their main competitors, such as Primark who contributed $9 million.
After pressure, they announced that they would contribute an undisclosed amount. It was later revealed that they had paid ?60,000 into the fund, which labour rights campaigns challenged as being an insufficient amount compared with other retailers.

The settlement occupied a tongue-like strip of land, on hich ground, 41 feet above O.D., overlooking the plain and above flood-level. It was defended by the river Mersey on the north and by the Cress and Lum brooks on the west and east. It occupied an important strategic position at the head of the tidal portion of the Mersey at the place
where it can be first forded.
The Roman settlement was clearly a walled town with no evidence of a military camp. It probably became established as a mansio, at the ford, then a customs-town and port and finally developed into an industrial town. It was on the Brigantian frontier.
Wilderspool Wall Defences
The excavations revealed that the Roman town was defended by a wall with an outer ditch, forming an irregularly four-sided figure and enclosing an area of c.3 acres. Only the western side of these defences was fully excavated but the ditch was traced sufficiently to indicate the general plan. The wall was built of local sandstone facing to a core of rubble and clay and was 9-12 feet thick. Large buttress-like bases were found on the west and east sides and identified as ballistaria. There were traces of an angle tower on the rounded NW angle of the defences and, at this angle, a well-made causeway was found with vague indications of a gate. History
The first station named Wolverhampton had opened on the edge of the town centre in 1837 on the Grand Junction Railway, this station was renamed Wednesfield Heath in 1855, shortly after the present station was opened, and then was closed in 1873.
On 12 November 1849, the Shrewsbury and Birmingham Railway opened a temporary terminus to its line, at a location very close to the present station.
The present station was opened on 1 July 1852 by the Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Stour Valley Railway, a subsidiary of the London and North Western Railway (LNWR)
it was named Wolverhampton Queen Street. The only visible remnant of the original station is the Queen's Building, the gateway to Railway Drive which was the approach road to the station. The building was originally the carriage entrance to the station and was completed three years before the main station building. Today, it forms part of Wolverhampton bus station.
Two years later, on 1 July 1854, the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway (OWWR) opened a second station, located behind the older station on lower ground, which became known as the Wolverhampton Low Level station from April 1856, the other becoming known as Wolverhampton High Level from 1 June 1885

The church was replaced in 1887 by a purpose-built theatre, which burnt down in 1910. The theatre was rebuilt the following year, and was refurbished in 1994. It continues in use as a theatre, as of 2022 it is managed by Trafalgar Theatres. The theatre is constructed in brick, and adjacent to it is a block containing the entrance and offices. History
The theatre stands on the site of a former Roman Catholic Church that had been built to serve Irish immigrants working on the local railway. In 1876 the congregation moved into a larger church in the town. The site was acquired by Thomas Cliffe, a local farmer, and he gave permission for Henry Taylor, a local printer, to convert the church into a theatre. Taylor wanted to have a proper theatre on the site and later built the New Lyceum Theatre, which opened on 21 November 1887. It cost ?5,000 (equivalent to ?590,000 in 2021) and seated 1,250 people. It was re-fitted in 1908 and changed its name to the Opera House. On 11 March 1910 the theatre was destroyed in a fire, and it was decided to rebuild it on the same site. The new theatre was designed by Albert Winstanley, it seated 850, and opened on 6 October 1911. In the early 1930s it was acquired by Terence Byron, who also owned theatres elsewhere in the country. It was bought in 1955 by Crewe Borough Council who formed a management trust in 1964. It operated, with a varying degree of success, as a repertory theatre. During this time actors and actresses who later achieved fame gained experience in the theatre

The Group's roots are traced back to the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers, established in 1844. The Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers was based on the Rochdale Principles ? which notably introduced the idea of distributing a share of profits according to purchases through a scheme which became known as the dividend or Divi.
Although the Co-operative Group incorporates the original Rochdale Society, the business's core for much of its history were its wholesale operations. This began in 1863 when the North of England Co-operative Wholesale Industrial and Provident Society Limited was launched in Manchester by 300 individual co-operatives in Yorkshire and Lancashire. By 1872, it was known as the 'Co-operative Wholesale Society' (CWS) and it was wholly owned by the co-operatives which traded with it. The CWS grew rapidly and supplied produce to co-operative stores across England, though many co-ops only sourced around a third of their produce through the CWS. It was this continued and fierce competition with other non-co-operative wholesalers which led to the CWS becoming highly innovative. By 1890 the CWS had established significant branches in Leeds, Blackburn, Bristol, Nottingham and Huddersfield alongside a number of factories which produced biscuits (Manchester), boots (Leicester), soap (Durham) and textiles (Batley). In an attempt to drive down the significant cost of transportation for produce the CWS even began its own shipping line which initially sailed from Goole docks to parts of continental Europe. One of the CWS' steamships, the Pioneer, was the first commercial vessel to use the Manchester Ship Canal.

Together with the adjacent building at No. 50, it is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. The buildings incorporate part of the Chester Rows. The stone frontage at the street and row levels of No. 48 is considered to be the earliest shop front still surviving in England. It was once the largest known medieval town house in the Chester Rows, and the stone-walled hall at the row level extending to No. 50 was the largest hall set parallel to the rows in Chester.
History
The building was constructed in the 13th century. During the 14th century it was extended to the south (into what is now No. 50), when the hall, set parallel to the rows, was built. During the 20th century part of the building was used by William Jones, a grocer. In the 1960s the business was taken over by the department store of Owen Owen, but this closed in 1999. The ground floor continues to be used as a shop.
Exterior
At the level of the row are three round-headed chamfered arches, the piers of which pass down to the ground level, at the sides of the windows and entrance of the shop at this level. Above the arches, in Gothic script, is the inscription Three Old Arches. Duplicated at the tops of the piers, between the arches, is the date 1274 AD. Above the arches are three sash windows, each with 12 panes and, in the top storey is another sash window, this one being tripartite, with 4:12:4 panes.
Interior
In the undercroft of No. 48, the original stone pillars have been replaced by cast iron columns. The undercroft of No. 50 retains its original stone arch. Much of the medieval stone hall remains at the level of the row, which extends between Nos. 48 and 50. It is the largest stone-walled hall set parallel with the row in Chester, measuring over 12m by over 8m, and it contains four medieval doorways. The hall also contains a 16th century open fireplace

Modillion eaves cornice. right-hand range then has additional bay with paired windows to each floor, and then has wide pedimented gable adjoining entrance tower, with tripartite windows on upper floors in stone architraves with wrought-iron balconettes to second floor. right-hand section is built over the River Croal, and is carried on a 2-arched bridge of rusticated stone.
Main body of Victoria Hall projects as wing from rear of street range: Entrance hall with tall transomed windows to stairs, then main hall a 3 storey, 3-window range with tripartite windows to first floor, and segmentally arched 4-light mullioned and transomed windows to upper storey. Transomed windows with round arched lights to basement storey. 5-storey service range at west.

The IKEA Warrington building was completed at Gemini Retail Park in May 1987, and, in the weeks afterwards, the store began to recruit staff for the October opening
In the late eighties and early 90s, before soft play centres were everywhere, IKEA endeared itself to kids with a ball pit at the front of the store - and the chance to sit on every chair and lie on every bed before a trip to the cafe

The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Liverpool, the archdeaconry of Warrington and the deanery of Winwick.
History
A church at Winwick is recorded in the Domesday Book. The earliest parts of the present church are the bases of the north arcade which date from the early 13th century, and the walls of the Legh Chapel and the organ chamber which are dated 1330. The west tower was built in 1358, and the walls and north arcade of the nave (except for the Legh Chapel and the organ chamber) date from 1580. Much damage was done to the church in 1648 when Oliver Cromwell stationed his troops in the church after the Battle of Red Bank. The south porch was added in 1720, and the south arcade of the nave was rebuilt in 1836 reusing earlier stones. The chancel, sanctuary and vestry were rebuilt by Pugin in 1847?49 for the 13th Earl of Derby. The spire was rebuilt and the church was restored in 1869 by the Lancaster partnership of Paley and Austin. On Thursday 13 January 1887, Titanic Captain Edward Smith married Sarah Eleanor Pennington in the church. In 1931?32 Henry Paley successor in the Lancaster architectural practice, now known as Austin and Paley, restored the tower at a cost of ?463, and in 1934 he added a new vestry, porch and entrance at a cost of ?232
The church is built of sandstone with a metal, stainless steel, roof. Its plan consists of a west tower, a nave of six bays with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a south porch, a chapel in the east bay of each aisle, a chancel and sanctuary of three bays, and a north vestry. The south chapel is the Legh Chapel and the north chapel belonged to the Gerard family. The tower is in three stages and has a recessed spire. On the west face is a door above which is a three-light window.

Citizen Firefighter was conceived primarily to celebrate the fire service. But it is also an attempt, through a recognition of their work, to reclaim the political and civic space associated with the historical form of the public statue. While maintaining the clear, formal language of the past, the content and narrative of this new work differs in many ways from the historical tradition, and it is precisely through this rupture between Citizen Firefighter and what is generally understood to be the impact of historical works that we can begin to assess what kind of relationship now exists between citizen and resident, between statue and sculpture. The space opened up in this way creates the possibility of a dialogue of historical and sociological change.
Through the work's symbolism, Citizen Firefighter appears to rekindle the onlooker's reflexes when faced with a nineteenth-century public monument. It differs, however, by both the neutrality of its stance and by the prominence given to the breathing apparatus, which has a democratising effect on human identity. The generic or quotidian aspect of the figure is further accentuated by a reductive treatment of form, in which all naturalist or realist traits have been suppressed. Subtraction peels away pathos, creating enough critical distance to enable the viewer to consider the complex charge inherent in the way the subject is presented. In this way the meaning of the monument itself is left partially open, thus creating a space that can be reinvested by the onlooker

Founder Ivor Hazan, 67, opened his first boutique on the King Street West in Manchester city centre in 1965 and his 40 stores became a Mecca for fashion hipsters across the region.
He announced last month he was to shut the doors on his last remaining shop in Stockport, which opened in 1974, due to declining sales.
However after the story was featured in the pages of the M.E.N and on our website, the brand has undergone a revival.
Ivor says he has been inundated with people coming into the shop and sharing their stories of the off-the-wall clobber they bought from him in their youth.
One man even broke down in tears whilst other wanted to buy his distinctive yellow carrier bags and sell them online.
And after seeing a spike in sales Ivor says he will keep the shop open - for now at least.
His first store opened at the height of the ?swinging' Sixties.
It was close to a boutique owned by United hero George Best and he had a gentleman's agreement that he would not sell suits if the United ace didn't sell jeans.
In 1966 it became the first store in the north of England to stock Levis jeans, which then cost ?2.37 a pair.
The brand grew and at its peak it had 43 stores across the north west, including Stockport, Altrincham, Bolton and Bury.
However all but seven of them were forced to close in 2002 after the company went into administration.
And Ivor said stores such as Primark were ?killing' independent stores like his.
But due to the phenomenal response after we featured their plight he has shelved plans to take his operation solely online and he will keep the doors open of the shop on Prince's Street in Stockport town centre.
The Didsbury entrepreneur said: It's just been absolutely amazing.

A mosaic tribute to The Fall's Mark E. Smith has been unveiled - and purposefully hidden away on a back street for fans to discover in the Northern Quarter
There is a new tribute to The Fall frontman Mark E Smith in Manchester city centre - but you'll have to head off the beaten track to find it.
The maverick mastermind of the Manc band died in January, aged 60, after battling cancer, with tributes paid from rock and cultural icons from across the globe.
Now there's a permanent tribute, hidden in the Northern Quarter, to his lyrical genius.
Venture to the far (and dead) end of Short Street and you will find two striking mosaics - one in Mark's image and the other featuring lyrics from The Fall song Ten Houses of Eve, framed by the brickwork of the far wall of the Affleck's building.
The artworks have been commissioned by renowned mosaic artist Mark Kennedy, and were created by artist Mary Goodwin.
Kennedy had been friends with Smith for 15 years, and hopes to add to artworks in the secluded end of Short Street as an ongoing tribute to Smith and The Fall.
He says: I want to call this Fall corner, and over the years I'd like to add little bits every time there's a celebratory element to the group.
I like the corner because it's hidden and to an extent The Fall were quite a hidden band and Mark's lyrics have many hidden meanings too.
It's hard to find, and like The Fall in many respects, you have to look for it and that works for me.
The lyrics on the artwork read: Identity art.. if only the shards you'd relocate back in place, ending with the dates of Smith's life - 1957-2018.
Kennedy was keen for a female artist to create the works, as a testament to the female musicians in The Fall, and commissioned Leeds-based Mary Goodwin

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RPGEPM - Thomas Harrison designed the new exchange of 1809 at the junction of Market Street and Exchange Street. Harrison designed the exchange in the Classical style. It had two storeys above a basement and was constructed in Runcorn stone. The cost, ?20,000, was paid for in advance by 400 members who bought ?50 shares and paid ?30 each to buy the site. The semi-circular north fa??ade had fluted Doric columns. The exchange room where business was conducted covered 812 square yards. The ground floor also contained the members' library with more than 15,000 books. The basement housed a newsroom lit by a dome and plate-glass windows, its ceiling was supported by a circle of Ionic pillars spaced 15 feet from the walls. The first-floor dining-room was accessed by a geometrical staircase. The exchange opened to celebrate of the birthday of George III in 1809. It also contained other anterooms and offices.
As the cotton trade continued to expand, larger premises were required and its extension was completed in 1849. The Exchange was run by a committee of notable Manchester industrialists. From 1855 to 1860 the committee was chaired by Edmund Buckley.
The second exchange was replaced by a third designed by Mills & Murgatroyd, constructed between 1867 and 1874. It was extended and modified by Bradshaw Gass & Hope between 1914 and 1931 to form the largest trading hall in England. The trading hall had three domes and was double the size of the current hall. The colonnade parallel to Cross Street marked its centre. On trading days merchants and brokers struck deals which supported the jobs of tens of thousands of textile workers in Manchester and the surrounding towns. Manchester's cotton dealers and manufacturers trading from the Royal Exchange earned the city the name, Cottonopolis

According to Helene (Leni) Vermeirsch, the niece of the founders, Patisserie Valerie was first opened in 1926 on the corner of Dean Street and Old Compton Street in Soho, London by Esther van Gyseghem, born in Ostende, Belgium on 22 April 1900 and her husband Theophile (Theo) Vermeirsch. There is not known to have been a Valerie in the founders' families, but Esther came to be referred to as Madame Valerie.
The chain has expanded rapidly since 2006, growing from eight shops in 2006 to 192 as of May 2017. It opened its first shop in the Republic of Ireland in 2017, in Debenhams in Blanchardstown Centre.
In April 2014 the company announced plans to raise ?33m on the London Alternative Investment Market, using the sum to reduce its debt.
Trading in the shares of Patisserie Holdings, the parent company of Patisserie Valerie, were suspended on 10 October 2018 following the discovery of potentially fraudulent accounting irregularities, which had led to the possibility that there had been a material mis-statement of the company's accounts.

The library, which opened to the public in 1900, was founded by Enriqueta Augustina Rylands in memory of her husband, John Rylands. The John Rylands Library and the library of the University of Manchester merged in July 1972 into the John Rylands University Library of Manchester
today it is part of The University of Manchester Library.
Special collections built up by both libraries were progressively concentrated in the Deansgate building. The special collections, believed to be among the largest in the United Kingdom, include medieval illuminated manuscripts and examples of early European printing, including a Gutenberg Bible, the second largest collection of printing by William Caxton, and the most extensive collection of the editions of the Aldine Press of Venice. The Rylands Library Papyrus P52 has a claim to be the earliest extant New Testament text. The library holds personal papers and letters of notable figures, among them Elizabeth Gaskell and John Dalton.
The architectural style is primarily neo-Gothic with elements of Arts and Crafts Movement in the ornate and imposing gatehouse facing Deansgate which dominates the surrounding streetscape. The library, granted Grade I listed status in 1994, is maintained by the University of Manchester and open for library readers and visitors.

The arcade was listed as a Grade II* listed building on the 25 January 1972. The listing includes the block of shops (Barton's Building) and offices enclosing the arcades. It was constructed by Corbett, Raby and Sawyer in 1871.
Hartwell describes the Barton's Building facade as utterly ignorant.. the ground floor pilasters must be seen to be believed. The arcade, however, is a gorgeous glass and iron shopping arcade with glass domes..., the best example of this type of cast-iron and glass arcade anywhere in the country.
The entrance to the arcade on St Ann's Square incorporates a large, cast iron and glass wall. The two entrances on Deansgate are hidden behind the Barton Building. The building is of four storeys with an attic, a long nine-bay facade to Deansgate, divided in half horizontally by a balustraded balcony. The structure is composed of cast iron and glass. The iron work was supplied by the Macfarlane Saracen Glass Factory in Glasgow. The building was one of the first to be built on the newly widened Deansgate.The arcade was restored in the 1980s. The complex was damaged during air raids on Liverpool, notably during the May Blitz of 1941. In the aftermath of the war, the financial problems of the owners and the general decline of docking in the city meant that the future of the Albert Dock was uncertain. Numerous plans were developed for the re-use of the buildings but none came to fruition and in 1972 the dock was finally closed. Having lain derelict for nearly ten years, the redevelopment of the dock began in 1981, when the Merseyside Development Corporation was set up, with the Albert Dock being officially re-opened in 1984.

The whole structure is faced in ceramic mosaics, pieces from local ceramic companies' products, glass beads, and tiles.
A number of themes have been incorporated into the design, including animals and plants indigenous to the area, a picture of the church, together with mouldings of heads and other features from gravestones and monuments in the churchyard, images of the traditional coal and bottle kilns that made the city famous, as well as high-tech industries, a tribute to Sir Stanley Matthews, whose funeral service was held at the Church, and a depiction of the Trent and Mersey Canal merging into the Sea of Galilee and then into the River Trent as it wraps round the base of the mosaic, unifying the design for the whole structure. Within this ribbon of mosaic, ammonites and different varieties of fish are depicted.
On the front of the bench, facing away from the church, are plaques depicting St Peter's Church and School, interspersed with heads, both European and Asian. The base of the seat features an image of two men in a boat, with a mast in the shape of an upside-down cross and two crossed keys (both emblems of St Peter, to whom the nearby church is dedicated).
The wildlife depicted on the right hand end of the bench includes a bat with outstretched wings, a squirrel, a rabbit, a frog, a snail, a fox, a butterfly, a robin, a blackbird, a magpie, a hedgehog and a wren.
The back of the bench celebrates the industrial heritage of Stoke on Trent. Its designs includes plaques featuring men in flat caps carrying pots to the kiln on wooden boards, bottle kilns, pit winding gear and factory chimneys. These are interspersed with smaller pieces commemorating the pottery produced in the area. Below the seat, the central design is of two cartoon-like figures in a canal barge.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEEGB2 - Opened by Felix O'Hanlon as The Railway Tavern, the pub was then bought by Michael Fanigan. Fanigan's son Patrick renamed and renovated the pub in 1885.
The Crown owes its elaborate tiling, stained glass and woodwork to the Italian craftsmen whom Fanigan persuaded to work on the pub after hours. These craftsmen were brought to Ireland to work on the many new churches being built in Belfast at the time. It was this high standard of work that gave the Crown the reputation of being one of the finest Victorian Gin Palaces of its time.
In 1978, the National Trust, following persuasion by people including Sir John Betjeman, purchased the property and three years later completed a ?400,000 renovation to restore the bar to its original Victorian state. Further restoration by the National Trust was done in 2007 at a cost of ?500,000. This work is the subject of a BBC Northern Ireland documentary, The Crown Jewel, screened in 2008.
A recognisable landmark of Belfast, the pub has featured as a location in numerous film and television productions, such as David Caffrey's Divorcing Jack (1998) and Carol Reed's classic 1947 film Odd Man Out.
The Crown has been given a Grade A Listed Building status by the Environment and Heritage Service.

Her autobiography, My Boy, documents their relationship. She was the proprietor of the Clifton Grange Hotel in Manchester, which provided accommodation for a number of bands in the 1970s including Thin Lizzy.
Biography
Philomena Lynott was born on 22 October 1930 as the fourth of nine children to Frank and Sarah Lynott in Dublin, and grew up in the Crumlin district of the city. She left school aged 13 and worked in an elderly people's home.
In 1947 Lynott took advantage of a viable job market in England, that needed labour to rebuild damage caused by World War II, finding work as a nurse in Manchester. She began a relationship with Cecil Parris, which led to Philip's birth on 20 August 1949. She suffered prejudice because she did not marry Cecil Paris and was the mother of a mixed-race son, who she decided would best be raised by her parents in Dublin. Lynott had two other children that she put up for adoption. She remained close to her son throughout his life but because she only saw him sporadically felt they were more like sister and brother or friends instead of a typical mother and son relationship.
In 1964 Lynott began a relationship with Dennis Keeley and the couple took over management of the Clifton Grange Hotel in Whalley Range, Manchester. Though they had no experience in running a hotel, they bought the property after six months and remained there for the next 14 years. The hotel became well known in northwest England for being frequented by the show business trade. Lynott took advantage of hotel licensing laws, which meant the bar could be open at 2 am when all other local venues had shut. When Thin Lizzy became commercially successful in the 1970s, the band looked forward to gigging in Manchester as Philomena would accommodate them and put on an after-show party.

Formally named The King's College of Our Lady and Saint Nicholas in Cambridge, the college lies on the River Cam and faces out onto King's Parade in the centre of the city.
King's was founded in 1441 by Henry VI, soon after he had founded its sister college in Eton. However, the King's plans for the college were disrupted by the Wars of the Roses and resultant scarcity of funds, and his eventual deposition. Little progress was made on the project until in 1508 Henry VII began to take an interest in the college, most likely as a political move to legitimise his new position. The building of the college's chapel, begun in 1446, was finally finished in 1544 during the reign of Henry VIII.

Manchester Town Hall is a Victorian-era, Neo-gothic municipal building in Manchester, England. The building functions as the ceremonial headquarters of Manchester City Council and houses a number of local government departments.

The Pier Head is a riverside location in the city centre of Liverpool, England. It is part of the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was inscribed in 2004.
The site encompasses a trio of landmarks, built on the site of the former George's Dock and referred to since at least 2000 as The Three Graces:
Royal Liver Building, built between 1908 and 1911 and designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas. It is a grade I listed building consisting of two clock towers, both crowned by mythical Liver Birds. The building is the headquarters of the Royal Liver Friendly Society.
Cunard Building, constructed between 1914 and 1916 and a grade II* listed building. It is the former headquarters of the Cunard Line shipping company.
Port of Liverpool Building, built from 1903 to 1907 and also grade II* listed. It is the former home of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board.

Chetham was born in Crumpsall, Lancashire, England, the son of Henry Chetham, a successful Manchester merchant who lived in Crumpsall Hall and his wife, Jane (c.1542?1616), the daughter of Robert Wroe of Heaton. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School, and in 1597 was apprenticed to Samuel Tipping, a Manchester linen draper.
In 1605, he moved to London with his brother George and set up a partnership with him trading in various textiles. The business was successful, since the fabric was bought in London and sold for a higher price in Manchester. He acquired Clayton Hall in Manchester as his home, and in 1628 was also able to buy Turton Tower from William Orrell.
In 1631, he was asked to be knighted after his huge wealth became known to the crown, but he declined the honour, and so was fined. In 1635, he became the High Sheriff of Lancashire , a job he was unable to refuse, and in 1643 he was forced into the position of General Treasurer of Lancashire, which he found very difficult for his age.
He also began to obtain debts, and he feared that on his death parliament would take his money. He therefore donated money to form a blue coat school for forty poor boys, which later became Chetham's Hospital and then Chetham's School of Music. He also left money to establish Chetham's Library, including funds to pay for books. More libraries were constructed later on from this money
After Chetham's death, in 1653, at Clayton Hall the school and library opened. Chetham's contribution is commemorated by a statue and a window in Manchester Cathedral

The Silver Shadow was produced from 1965 to 1976, and the Silver Shadow II from 1977 to 1980. To date, the combined model run of 30,057 units manufactured is the largest production volume of any Rolls-Royce model
A Bentley-badged version, the T-series, was produced from 1965 through 1980 in 2,336 examples.
The Silver Shadow was originally intended to be called Rolls-Royce Silver Mist, but was replaced with Silver Shadow at the last minute due to Mist meaning manure or crap in German. It was designed with several modernisations in response to concerns that the company was falling behind in automotive innovation, most notably in its unitary construction.
Other new features included disc brakes replacing drums, and independent rear suspension instead of the outdated live rear axle design of previous Rolls-Royce models.
The standard wheelbase Silver Shadow measured 203.5 inches (5,170 mm), 4,700 lb (2,100 kg) and had a book price of ?6,557 in the first year of production.
The Shadow featured a 172 hp (128 kW) 6.2 L V8 from 1965 to 1969, and a 189 hp (141 kW) 6.75 L V8 from 1970 to 1980. Left-hand-drive models were coupled to the recently introduced Turbo-Hydramatic 400 automatic gearbox sourced from General Motors (GM). Pre-1970, right-hand-drive (RHD) models used a highly modified, aluminum-cased version of the original cast-iron 4-speed Hydra-Matic gearbox that had been built in Crewe under license from GM since 1953. From 1968, export RHD cars gained the Turbo-Hydramatic 400, and by 1970, the 4-speed unit had been completely phased out even in the home market

Leith had electric street lighting from 1890, and electric trams from 1905 (only Blackpool was earlier in the UK). the trams are returning at great cost and more changes have improved teh Leith waterfront in recent years.
The Malmaison Hotel, beside the entrance to Leith Docks, at the Shore, Leith, shown here was formerly a sailors' home. The Sailors' Home used to provide accommodation for sailors whose ships were in port. The Home contained comfortable rooms for each rank, a canteen, a low cost clothing shop, recreational rooms and a chapel.
It was an innovation in social care at a time when many workers lived in overcrowded slums. The angel in the stonework above the door was an emblem for the seamen's mission. Much investment has been made to improve the area from The City of Edinburgh District Council, Forth Ports Authority and the Water of Leith Conservation Trust.
The statue to the left is of Sandy Irvine Robertson OBE, wine merchant, charity promoter, founder of Scottish Business Achievement Awards, once wrote of as one of those people who made life worth living. A bear of a man, standing six and a half feet tall, he had a heart the size of Scotland. He was mischievous, often outrageous, but never unkind, and those of us privileged to have known his friendship will be eternally grateful for it. Praise indeed.
Leith is known for its port and red wine imports and I assume he was linked to 'Irvine Robertson Wines' who are located just up the road. After his premature death (Born: 11 August, 1942, in Stirling Died: 20 June, 1999, aged 56), his friends commissioned a bronze statue on the waterfront at Leith. It was sculpted by Lucy Poett. She studied under Cubilt Bevis at The Heatherley School of Art in London and with the late Scott Sutherland RSA in Dundee.
