The Angel Hotel was a large Georgian Building located where the Natwest Bank is today. It was one of the most important buildings in the town, and much business was conducted there. A 16 year old Princess Victoria stayed there whilst visiting the town, two year before she was to become Queen.
Damage, through subsidence, resulted in the building developing a leaning appearance and was described by an American visitor as not having, ?a straight line in it, either vertically or horizontally. The building was eventually demolished in 1924.

The Angel Hotel was a large Georgian Building located where the Natwest Bank is today. It was one of the most important buildings in the town, and much business was conducted there. A 16 year old Princess Victoria stayed there whilst visiting the town, two year before she was to become Queen.
Damage, through subsidence, resulted in the building developing a leaning appearance and was described by an American visitor as not having, ?a straight line in it, either vertically or horizontally. The building was eventually demolished in 1924.

This pub has always been the favourite of Merchant Navy men and it is mentioned in the famous best-selling novel The Cruel Sea by Nicholas Montserrat, which was made into a very successful film starring Jack Hawkins, because during the Second World War, it was a popular haunt for seamen of all nationalities.
There are a number of interesting large framed photos of old Derry around the walls of the bar, and an unusual attraction in this friendly city is that the publican is a woman and an attractive one at that!

The Three Pigeons has stood here since the middle of the 18th century - a fire badly damaged it in 1916, fortunately it was rebuilt two years later. The design of the new frontage was inspired by a late 17th century house on Oxford's high Street and like many buildings on Guildford's ancient high street, it is reputed to be haunted.

The first presence of Chinese people in Liverpool dates back to 1834 when the first vessel direct from China arrived in Liverpool's docks to trade such goods as silk and cotton wool. Many Chinese immigrants first arrived in Liverpool in the late 1860s as a result of Alfred Holt and Company employing large numbers of Chinese seamen while establishing the Blue Funnel Shipping Line. Iceland Foods began business in 1970, when Malcolm Walker opened the first store in Leg Street, Oswestry, Shropshire, England, with his business partner Peter Hinchcliffe. Together, they invested ?60 for one month's rent at the store. They were still employees of Woolworths at the time, and their employment was terminated once their employer discovered their other roles. Iceland Foods initially specialised in loose frozen food. In 1977, they opened a store in Manchester selling own-labelled packaged food, and by 1978 the company had 28 stores.
In 1983, the business grew by purchasing the 18 stores of Bristol-based St. Catherine's Freezer Centres, and in 1984 the business went public for the first time. The cash investment was used to purchase South East-based Orchard Frozen Foods in 1986, and the purchase of larger rival Bejam in 1988. In 1993, the firm took over the food halls of the Littlewoods department store and also acquired the French Au Gel chain. This last move proved unsuccessful and the stores were dropped within a year
In 2019, Iceland Foods opened 45 new stores in the UK (including 31 larger stores under The Food Warehouse fascia) but had also closed eight, increasing the number of UK stores to 942. The company has a strategic alliance with The Range, where Iceland's food offer has been introduced to nine of the home and garden retailer's stores. In 2019 it also expanded its warehousing locations, adding five multi-temperature regional distribution centres at Livingston, Warrington, Deeside, Enfield and Swindon

The street roughly follows the line of the via praetoria of Eboracum, the Roman city, which ran between what are now St Helen's Square and York Minster.
The street appears to have lost importance in the Anglian and Jorvik period. York Minster was rebuilt in the 11th century, and stone for it was brought up the road, from a quay behind what is now York Guildhall. This appears to have brought the street back to prominence, and new building plots were laid adjoining the north-eastern part of the street. This part of the street lay in the Liberty of St Peter's, associated with the Minster, and many of its buildings belonged to the church, the whole area soon becoming built up, mostly with tenements. By 1215, there were houses for the prebends of Ampleforth, Barnby, Bramham and North Newbald
The street was known as Stonegate by 1119, probably named for stone paving, which would have been unique in the city at the time, although an alternative theory links the name to the stone hauled up to the Minster.
Because of the location of the street, it has historically been used for civic processions, from the York Guildhall to the Minster. It was also the site where three of the historic York Mystery Plays were performed. In 1570, Guy Fawkes was born at a house on the street.
Nikolaus Pevsner described the street as perhaps the most attractive [street in the city], and one of the busiest. Narrow, quite long, and with a variety of good things. Due to its popularity with tourists, the street was pedestrianised in 1974. It was repaved in York stone in 2020
Most of the buildings along the street are listed. Among the most notable on the north-west side are numbers 54, 56, and 58 Stonegate, 14th-century timber-framed buildings

Mosaic shop signs such as this were widely used by independent traders as a durable and visually distinctive way to identify premises. Installed directly into the floor or pavement, they were designed to withstand heavy footfall while acting as permanent advertisements for the business within. Many once existed across British towns and cities, but relatively few survive intact today.
Blossom Street has long been a busy approach route into York, particularly toward Micklegate and the historic city centre. Surviving features like this mosaic provide valuable insight into the area's commercial past and the everyday craftsmanship associated with small local businesses.

The site selected for current facility, the third town hall, was just to the west of the second town hall on land which had previously been occupied by residential properties. The foundation stone was laid by the Minister of Health, Sir Hilton Young, on 22 October 1934. It was designed by Lanchester and Lodge in the Art Deco style and officially opened by the Chairman of London County Council, Lord Snell, on 3 July 1937. The design involved a symmetrical main frontage with thirteen bays facing onto Mare Street
the central section of five bays featured a doorway flanked by windows on either side on the ground floor
there were five round headed widows leading onto a balcony on the first floor with a clock and the borough coat of arms above. The principal rooms were the council chamber, the mayor's parlour, the members' room and an assembly hall running along the rear of the building.
The building continued to be the local seat of government after the formation of the enlarged London Borough of Hackney in 1965. However, many of the council officers and their departments, who had been located in disparate departments around the area, moved to the new Hackney Service Centre in Hillman Street, designed by Hopkins Architects, in 2010.

The hotel was originally the idea of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who was the hotel's first managing director. The funding came in large part from the Directors of the Great Western Railway Company, who were persuaded by Brunel to buy shares in the project. The hotel was built on Praed Street in the early 1850s and opened on 9 June 1854 by H.R.H. The Prince Albert, Prince Consort, having taken 14 months to build. The hotel was designed by architect Philip Charles Hardwick, costing approximately ?60,000 including all furnishing and fittings - a building which was 'to rival the facilities of the great hotels on the Continent'. The building effectively forms the main fa??ade of the station, closing off the end of the train shed at the head of the terminal platforms. It was built by Messrs Holland Hannen & Cubitts, the building firm founded by Thomas Cubitt.
At Paddington, Hardwick pioneered the Second Empire style for buildings of this type in England. In its original form, the hotel was extensively ornamented inside and outside, and there is a surviving allegorical sculpture in the pediment by John Thomas. The hotel was designed in the style of Louis XIV and further embellished by a figurative sculpture over the front entrance of the hotel representing Peace, Plenty, Science & Industry. Thomas was to contribute many statues and decorations in the present Palace of Westminster.
The Great Western Railway originally leased the hotel to a subsidiary, the Great Western Royal Hotel Company, which was chaired by their engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel from 1855 until his death in 1859. Brunel's original idea was that a passenger wishing to travel from London to New York would enter the Great Western Royal Hotel and, from that point, be conveyed by and housed in the various undertakings controlled by the Great Western Company.

allowing the theatre to return to theatrical use for its 85th anniversary.

Built in 1681 by Sir Hugh Cholmley, the White Horse & Griffin was the first Coaching Inn from Whitby to York and London. It was operated as an Inn until 1939.
It was also used as a meeting place for explorers Captain James Cook and William Scoresby who hired and fixed their crews from the building. The White Horse & Griffin closed in 1939 on the day of the Battle of the River Plate (the first major Naval Battle of the Second Wold War). Since opening in its current guise in 1993, and built around an outstanding restaurant the White Horse & Griffin has developed into a famous success story.
From the restored central entrance porch with its original decorative panels and the exposed Victorian signage through the cobbled alleyway, the Hotel has separate entrances via stone and rail steps and opens up to four floors within which are 10 en-suite double bedrooms. Each of the rooms and the first floor private dining room are designated by name from well-known Whitby ships and Skippers.
The exposed timbers and stripped original panelling, restored cast fireplaces, decorative carpentry and plasterwork, together with quirky rooms and passageways breaths a history, which you can almost taste.

The Group's roots are traced back to the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers, established in 1844. By 1872, it was known as the 'Co-operative Wholesale Society' (CWS) and it was wholly owned by the co-operatives which traded with it. The CWS grew rapidly and supplied produce to co-operative stores across England, though many co-ops only sourced around a third of their produce through the CWS. It was this continued and fierce competition with other non-co-operative wholesalers which led to the CWS becoming highly innovative. By 1890 the CWS had established significant branches in Leeds, Blackburn, Bristol, Nottingham and Huddersfield alongside a number of factories which produced biscuits (Manchester), boots (Leicester), soap (Durham) and textiles (Batley). In an attempt to drive down the significant cost of transportation for produce the CWS even began its own shipping line which initially sailed from Goole docks to parts of continental Europe. One of the CWS' steamships, the Pioneer, was the first commercial vessel to use the Manchester Ship Canal.

The special collections, believed to be among the largest in the United Kingdom, include medieval illuminated manuscripts and examples of early European printing, including a Gutenberg Bible, the second largest collection of printing by William Caxton, and the most extensive collection of the editions of the Aldine Press of Venice. The Rylands Library Papyrus P52 has a claim to be the earliest extant New Testament text. The library holds personal papers and letters of notable figures, among them Elizabeth Gaskell and John Dalton.
The architectural style is primarily neo-Gothic with elements of Arts and Crafts Movement in the ornate and imposing gatehouse facing Deansgate which dominates the surrounding streetscape. The library, granted Grade I listed status in 1994, is maintained by the University of Manchester and open for library readers and visitors.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG39NX - Early in his career, in 1896, Mackintosh met Catherine Cranston (widely known as Kate Cranston or simply Miss Cranston), an entrepreneurial local business woman who was the daughter of a Glasgow tea merchant and a strong believer in temperance.
The temperance movement was becoming increasingly popular in Glasgow at the turn of the century and Miss Cranston had conceived the idea of a series of art tearooms, venues where people could meet to relax and enjoy non-alcoholic refreshments in a variety of different rooms within the same building. This proved to be the start of a long working relationship between Miss Cranston and Mackintosh. Between 1896 and 1917 he designed and re-styled interiors in all four of her Glasgow tearooms, often in collaboration with his wife Margaret MacDonald.
Mackintosh's redesigned external facade was a carefully considered asymmetric, abstractly modelled composition with shallow curves on some areas of the surface, and varying depths of recesses to windows and the main entrance. The composition respected the urban context of the neighbouring buildings, matching the major cornice lines and heights of adjoining buildings, whilst still exploring emerging ideas of Art Nouveau and the modern movement.
The ground floor entrance door is placed far to the left of a wide band of fenestration, both of which are recessed below the first-floor level, the location of the Room de Luxe. To emphasise the importance of this room, Mackintosh designed a full width bay window, projecting the facade outwards with a gentle curve. The two storeys above this featured a more regular pattern of fenestration with three individual windows per floor, recessed to different degrees. The asymmetry of the composition was continued by widening the left side windows and creating another gentle curve in this part of the facade, extending through both storeys. This repeated the curved form of the first floor and emphasised the heavily recessed entrance to the building

Manchester Town Hall is a Victorian-era, Neo-gothic municipal building in Manchester, England. The building functions as the ceremonial headquarters of Manchester City Council and houses a number of local government departments.

Brick Lane Bookshop was originally part of The Tower Hamlets Arts Project (THAP), which was formed in the 1970s out of a protest.
In 1974, Thames Television launched the ?Eyesights' scheme. With money channelled through the Great London Arts Association, the idea was that professional artists would be commissioned to create giant posters for display in the borough ? with over half the amount being earmarked for the hire of hoardings alone.
The ?Eyesights' scheme was inevitably renamed ?Eyesore' by local people already involved in arts and community activities who thought that the money could be put to much better use. A crowded public meeting in February 1975 called for an alternative, bolder plan, bringing together existing and fledgling arts activities under a coordinating body to be called the Tower Hamlets Arts Project (THAP).
Rather than it being about artists coming into the area, it should be about those already here! And after some initial eye-rolling, Thames Television eventually saw the sense of the argument. The Borough Council assisted by appointing an Arts Officer, Phil Shepherd, to support the new scheme. THAP was launched at the start of 1976 and celebrated its achievements a year later with a month-long ?Big Show' at the Whitechapel Art Gallery. Critics were bemused at finding this international venue, which had presented the works of Picasso and Frida Kahlo, awash with East End poets, Stepney filmmakers, amateur rock bands, truanting schoolkids, improvised theatre shows and messy experiments in silkscreen printing.
