Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXX28F - Gabrielles Wish - also spelled Gabrielle's Wish - is a Post-Punk/Alternative Rock band from Manchester, Northwest, UK that formed in the mid '90s. They were signed to Rob's Records by Rob Gretton, releasing a self-titled E.P. and the Golded Up E.P. The band recorded Processed, which was to be the band's debut album until Rob Gretton's untimely passing. They then released Manchester Suite, a 12 of 3 tracks culled from a full album's worth of material (which would later be released as Propaganda). Between 2002 and 2006 via their own D.I.Y. labels Path and Small Adjustments they released Cost One E.P. (2002), Portal (first full album) in 2003, Here From The Neck Down E.P. in 2005 and Reformer, the band's second album. They signed with Eromeda Records, who have been releasing the band's music since 2006 apart from Processed, the album Gabrielle's Wish had recorded in 1997 and which was to be their debut album. Instead, it was released on CD in Germany by label Plastic Frog Records. The band are still active.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RKMM9B - Brighton Fringe is an open-access arts festival held annually in Brighton, England. It is the largest annual arts festival in England and one of the largest fringe festivals in the world. Brighton Fringe 2018 took place from 4 May ? 3 June. The programme of 2018 included 1008 events at over 166 venues across 4 weeks.
Brighton Fringe runs at a similar time to Brighton Festival, and in 2013 extended its run to four weeks. In 2019, Brighton Fringe will run from 3 May-2 June.
One of the event's main objectives is to promote local talent and the arts. It also offers performers an opportunity for their event to be reviewed or picked up by promoters, as well as going on to Edinburgh. This is why anyone can put on a Brighton Fringe event. In 2011 Brighton Fringe launched the Professional Development Programme, aimed at offering workshops to aspiring performers wanting to progress in the business. In 2012, Brighton Fringe opened its own on-street box office, which provided a physical base for the arts event, selling tickets as well as being a hub for promoters and performers. They also launched Brighton in the Square, a showcase of Brighton Fringe performers at the Leicester Square Theatre in London.
As part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad, Brighton Fringe introduced the Dip Your Toe project in 2012, which featured performances in six custom-built Victorian bathing machines, which were located throughout Brighton and Hove during the month of May. In 2014, the organisation launched an Arts Council England supported scheme called Window which showcases productions suitable for touring.
Brighton Fringe is a registered charity but does not rely on public funding, in fact, less than 3% of its income is generated from public sources. The other sources of revenue include participants' registration fees, advertising, sponsorship and Friends membership.

So, how do you lick yours? August, always a mad busy crazy time in Edinburgh, during the festival and fringe, which seems to have grown even bigger than the tattoo and festival.
As the blurb says:
The Sundaes are back in Edinburgh by popular demand for a second-year scoop in their brand new show for 2012, Knickerbocker Glory! Enjoy second helpings of stunning vocals, hilarious comedy and outrageous costumes from the biggest girl group in town!
Perfect for spooning and served with more than a sprinkling of glitter, The Sundaes promise to be the cream of the festival with a sparkling cherry on top! Book now for this must-see dollop of extravagance! ‘Find me a bigger or better show and I'll eat my bloomers’ (Chocolate Sundaes member).

They were a lovely bunch of comedy entertainers, recommended if they come to your corner of the world!
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (The Fringe) is the world's largest arts festival, with the 2012 event spanning 25 days totalling over 2,695 shows from 47 countries in 279 venues. Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place annually in Scotland's capital, in the month of August. The Fringe is a showcase for the performing arts, particularly theatre and comedy (which has seen substantial growth in recent years), although dance and music are also represented. In 2012, 36% of shows were comedy and 28% theatrical productions. Theatrical productions range from the classics of ancient Greece to William Shakespeare, Samuel Beckett and contemporary works. In 2012, 1,418 shows were having their world premiere.
The Fringe is an unjuried festival – with no selection committee, and therefore any type of performance may participate. The Fringe has often showcased experimental works that might not be invited to a more conservative arts festival. In addition to ticketed, programmed events, the Festival has included a street fair, located primarily on the Royal Mile. The Festival is organized by the Festival Fringe Society, which publishes the programme, sells tickets, and offers advice to performers. Their offices are on the Royal Mile.

Jud Charlton pictured here is a London actor, comedian and ventiliquist, with his alta-ego Philis. A sort of Camden Chucky on sulphate.
Jud has featured in films like Chemical Wedding and has played Ian Dury in 'ABFCAP - The Life and Rhymes of Ian Dury' , playing one of my teen favourites. I still have a gold vinyl 'New Boots and Panties' up in the loft. Jud Charlton, walked out over alterations made to the script by the comedian Chris Langham after a dissagreement.

No, not a typical Saturday night on any British high st, but ladies from the Threesome Theatre looking sexy to attract punters like flies to their flyers advertising 'Berlin Cabaret'. It was on 20-25th August 2012 at The Space On The Mile V39 (venue 39, you are due a Deuchars now arent you??).
As the blurb says 'as our emcee takes you on a journey of decadence and ignorance, let the cabaret girls and boys entertain you in our own slice of 1930's Berlin. Threesome theatre spotlights Berlins cabaret from the day the curtain went up in 1901 to the Nazi regime tore it down. Featuring throbbing music, enticing dancing and naughty original songs.

Morgan and West, spiffing fun! Lying, Cheating Scoundrels got rave reviews. A lovely couple of 'coves' I found them to be. Read more of a review here:
An intimate, late-night affair, Lying Cheating Scoundrels is not really a magic show in the traditional sense. With just 20 seats around a large semi-circular card table, Morgan and West recount various stories of their exploits throughout history, such as beating Charles Darwin at poker, and playing pontoon on the Titanic. The story of sudden death happy families, hitherto a closely guarded secret, must be heard to be believed.
In essence, this is an hour of watching two incredibly skilled entertainers count cards, play parlour tricks and, a lot of the time, explain exactly how they are doing it — or at least how they will tell you they did it. The rapport between the two is so effortless that the audience instantly feels relaxed and in friendly company.
An excellent campaign to their bigger stage show, this smaller performance shows the versatility of the two performers, and their immense skill. The sleight of hand on display is nothing short of remarkable, making the oldest of tricks seem as if it were brand new.
The duo will be taking this show to other festivals and, if all goes to plan, bringing it back to Edinburgh next year. Do yourself a favour, and see one of the most interesting magic shows around.
As the blub says 'Welcome to the internet home of dashing duo of deception Morgan &
West, the world’s finest time travelling Victorian magic act. Here you will find a veritable wealth of information about the chaps including who they are, what they do, and where they can be found doing what they do (and being who they are). Whatever your magical entertainment needs, Morgan &
West are at your service and only a telegram or carrier pigeon away'. Checkout more at www.morganandwest.co.uk/

Picky with your food? Alegies, Vegetarian? August, always a mad busy crazy time in Edinburgh, during the festival and fringe, which seems to have grown even bigger than the tattoo and festival. There's plenty of vegetable based humour here, its a broad church!.
At venue 203, The Princes Mall, just next to Waverley bridge and railway station, this show was on throughout the festival 4-25th August, as part of the free fringe.
The question raised is 'Wheres the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?' and more importantly 'Why did he pick it'?
As the blurb says:
This highly intriguing work exposes the truth. A truth in which The Mafia, Ms Muffet, David Cameron, Cabbage Beards, a talking pea,The Man from Del Monte, Assasination attempts and sports vouchers for schools are all involved.
Surrealist, Realist, Thoughtful, Funny, Free.

How do you take your horror? August, always a mad busy crazy time in Edinburgh, during the festival and fringe, which seems to have grown even bigger than the tattoo and festival. There's no shortage of victorian scaryness here!.
At Paradise in the Vault (venue 29) between the 21st &
27th August 2012 at 22:00 each day, Jack: A Rippers Tale walks you through a London autumn of terror.
As the blurb says:
Every new turn of this bewildering labyrinth reveals some fresh depth of social blackness, some strange and repulsive curiosity of human nature. What are we to do? Where are we to turn? These are the nightmares that haunt every citizen of Whitechapel and chill the spine of all London. With the police no closer to catching the culprit and no sign of the deparavity ceasing, the question is, who can we trust?
Different Device Theatre re-tell the disturbing ledgend that echos through the streets of Whitechapel history. Be thrown into the horror and misery that ruled the every day lives of London citizens during the Rippers Auumn of Terror.

Was it a rare trip north to address the Scots nation to plead with Alex Salmond to not leave the union? Maybe a ploy to drum up more Scottish Tories. Famously as they say, there are more pandas at Edinburgh zoo than tory MP's up here.
Do let me know in the comments below what 'message you might leave for Mr Cameron'.
Did I leave a message, well how do you resist? I just wrote 'Keep your hands off the NHS you scoundrel, stop selling Britain by the pound....'

Are you looking for love and romance? August, always a mad busy crazy time in Edinburgh, during the festival and fringe, which seems to have grown even bigger than the tattoo and festival. There's no shortage of scaryness and satire here!.
Call Me is a play starring Sarah Adams, Christine Clare, Laura Cope, Claire Dean, Katie McArdle and Matthew Stead which was performed at Sweet Grassmarket @ 10:10pm for 70 minutes, on most days during August 2012.
As the blurb says:
By The Slice Theatre Company Presents Call Me! Sponsored by www.TheatreLoverDating.co.uk
Writing and producing together for the first time, sisters Sarah Adams and Becky Adams are heading to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year with their play, dating comedy Call Me!, which received rave reviews and a sell-out run in Manchester last year.
Inspired by the likes of Victoria Wood and Dawn French, writer Sarah Adams has formed new theatre company By The Slice to produce a cringe-worthy yet affectionate romantic comedy alongside her film producer sister Becky. By The Slice invites the audience to come and rejoice with them at the ridiculousness of love and dating! What better way to get over your latest dating disaster than to be able to laugh at someone else's ludicrous misfortunes? Yet on this rollercoaster of humiliation and hilarity, we also unexpectedly find a new humility for love.
Taking all of the available Manchester cast with them, By The Slice will also be introducing some new faces as well as new-to-theatre director Dan Wilson whose credits include directing Sir Ian McKellen and Status Quo in Coronation Street, EastEnders, BBC's Land Girls and 32 Brinkburn Street, and feature film The Roundabout.
Sarah is joined in By The Slice by her sister, Producer Becky Adams. 'Of course initially I was introduced to Call Me! because it's my sister that has written it, but it was clear immediately how funny, engaging and close-to-the-bone the script was, and how well it connected with audiences, and so I quickly got my company Reelscape Productions involved!' says Becky.
Call Me! follows three women on an exposing comedy journey through their all too familiar relationship mishaps. Fed up with their bizarre relationships, our three lead characters decide to visit hippie love therapist Sandy Morris - founder of the Love Yourself To A Love Life Worth Loving movement. This proves an adventure in itself. Meanwhile, the antithesis of the conventional relationship plays out between confident Jenny and clumsy Mike. Will they become the success story of the unexpected? Will any of our characters succeed in banishing the rough from the smooth? Not if Sandy has anything to do with it!

This piece of four star contemporary, drama theatre is performed by 'Dead Posh Productions'. At a café on a railway station, housewife Laura Jesson meets doctor Alec Harvey. Although they are both already married, they gradually fall in love with each other. They continue to meet every Thursday on the small café, although they know that their love is impossible.....

As the blurb said: 'Join us for afternoon tea, as lovestruck commuters find themselves caught between a rock cake and a hard place. Tempted by something steamy? You will be chuffed if you can make it. Noel Coward's classic'.
Review by Michael Wallace:
'Great to see an almost original version of Brief Encounters. Particularly liked the way the passage of time was indicated. Even the small roles were well-portrayed. The pre-war accents were carried off with great success'.

An impertinent epilogue to 'The Importance Of Being Earnest' by Robin Johnson (the writer of Stitched Up).
'There are certain rules for surviving a drawing-room farce. Look over your plans for the next few days. If they are harebrained, reconsider. If a case of humourous mistaken identity arises, politely correct it before it gets out of hand. Resist the temptation to entrust any crucial task to a comic buffoon. With all those actors and buskers everywhere, nobody minds the Hare Krishna's snaking through. They fitted in rather well!
Sri Sri Khoda-Nitai Mayapura-sasha
ISKCON Scotland is based in Karuna Bhavan, Lesmahagow, which is between and slightly south of Edinburgh and Glasgow. The devotees preach throughout Scotland and Northern England, distributing books and running Namma Hatta programs and occasional festivals.
The scottish devotees are famous for their ‘GOURANGA!’ campaign.
Gouranga (the Golden one) is a name of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, an incarnation of Sri Krishna who preached the glories of the holy name (Hare Krishna) throughout India 500 years ago. The sound of ‘Gouranga’ is extremely potent spiritually, just like the Hare Krishna mantra, and whoever hears or chants this name becomes liberated.
Apart from the books of Srila Prabhupada, ISKCON Scotland can also supply various ‘Gouranga!’ branded merchandise such as mugs, toys and CDs.
Note: ‘Gouranga’ is the Scottish spelling of ‘Gauranga’.

As the review says, 'Sometimes it is hard to tell image from reality until the illusion is shattered at the tap of a finger. Durham University’s Rag &
Bone Productions use an exciting combination of physical theatre, drama and dance to bring you this dark and innovative take on a classic Greek myth. The tragic story of Echo and Narcissus follows the disastrous consequences of a man falling in love with his own reflection. Rag &

Narcissus, is a young man blessed with untold beauty, who spurns all amorous advances, be they from citizens, nymphs, or just about anyone who can appreciate the beauty of the perfect human form. Meanwhile, talkative forest nymph Echo is tasked by Zeus to distract his wife Hera with incredible stories while he has an affair. Hera finds out and curses Echo to be able to repeat only the ends of sentences spoken to her (hence her name, Echo).
She runs into Narcissus in a forest, he rejects her fumbled echoes and she wastes away until she is nothing but a voice. Narcissus rejects one final advance of an older man by the name of Ameinus and mocks him for his futile attempts, daring him to kill himself. Ameinus does so, but curses Narcissus beforehand, resulting in Artemis bewitching Narcissus to fall in love with the next person he sees.
As he is hunting in the woods, he stops to rest by a quiet pool in a grassy clearing and falls in love with his own reflection. At a loss, he plunges in to reach the young man but drowns. A small Narcissus flower is washed up on the shore afterwards, taking its name from him.

Love, incest? This might be the one! August, always a mad busy crazy time in Edinburgh, during the festival and fringe, which seems to have grown even bigger than the tattoo and festival. There's no shortage of scaryness and satire here!.
A show which ran at The Space on The Mile, Venue 39 (80 The High St), August 3rd to the 17th by The Terrible Edgar Theatre Co.
Andrew Leask reviewed it like this: It’s been hours since I left the venue, and I’m still thinking about this play. It takes a complex, metatextual concept – characters in a play have become self-aware – and plays with it, delivering an adaptation of ‘Oedipus’ that is as thought-provoking as it is engaging.
The chorus want to hide the horrible truth from Oedipus, but are compelled to follow the script
at times comical, it builds to a dark, fittingly tragic climax, throwing the audience’s need for tragedy and catharsis back at them. If you’re interested in tragedy, this will leave you with a mental itch that you can’t quite scratch: the mark of exciting, provocative theatre.
Oedipus fulfilled a prophecy that said he would kill his father and marry his mother, and thereby brought disaster on his city and family. The story of Oedipus is the subject of Sophocles's tragedy Oedipus the King, which was followed by Oedipus at Colonus and then Antigone. Together, these plays make up Sophocles's three Theban plays. Oedipus represents two enduring themes of Greek myth and drama: the flawed nature of humanity and an individual's powerlessness against the course of destiny in a harsh universe.

August, always a mad busy crazy time in Edinburgh, during the festival and fringe, which seems to have grown even bigger than the tattoo and festival. There's no shortage of talent and satire here!.
Part of the Free Fringe, the New Zealand company Trick of the Light Theatre has travelled across the world to tell a wonderful story of maps and roads that exist only if you know where to look for them. And if you follow them, the consequences may be more real than you expected.
The starting point of the story is the paper roads of New Zealand – roads that were built and drawn in on several maps but never materialised as the money was missing. Conjuring up a visual imagery that switches between episodic temporaries in refreshing ways, The Road that Wasn’t There imagines what would happen if one did indeed follow one of these paper roads off the edge of the real world.
The story centres on Maggie, who as a young girl follows one of these paper roads leading off behind the graveyard on her way to work for her family. She finds everything she has always wanted, but is drawn further and further away from the real world and into this wondrous world where time stands still. Performed through acting, puppetry and shadow theatre, the story is woven into a contemporary plot where her grown-up son is moving her to an old people’s home to protect her from her fantasies. As the two stories unfold, we learn something both about reality and about responsibility, love, and the changes that have occurred between generations.
The Road That Wasn’t There played at the Free Sisters venue until the 26 August as part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HDMB - Manchester Pride is an annual gay pride festival and parade held each summer in the city of Manchester, England. It is one of the longest running in the country and attracts thousands of visitors to the city's Gay Village, centred around Canal Street, each year. The festival's events that take place within the Village require a paid-for Pride wristband for entry, while other events, such as the parade, can be watched by any spectator.
The current ten day festival includes a Pride Fringe with a series of arts, music and cultural events all over the city as well as community events including poetry readings, quizzes and film showings, culminating in The Big Weekend, a 72-hour party during the August bank holiday weekend in Canal Street and the surrounding area, with a parade through the streets of Manchester.

This is a track that for me always conjours up the old 'Top Rank' Bingo clubs of 1970's and 80's Britain. Another John Peel backed track that helped me to appreciate reggae.
The young Jamaican singers Althea Forrest (17), and Donna Reid (18), caused a surprise with their one-off reggae hit single, 'Uptown Top Ranking'. It was produced by Joe Gibbs using a re-recording of the 'riddim' of the 1967 Alton Ellis' song 'I'm Still In Love', which had already been re-popularised in the 1970s by Marcia Aitken's cover 'I'm Still In Love With You Boy' and the deejay track 'Three Piece Suit' by Trinity, to which 'Uptown' was an 'answer record'. The single's UK release was on the Lightning label.
'Uptown Top Ranking' reached number one in the UK Singles Chart in February 1978, after early championing by BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel, but had only one week at the chart summit. The lyrics were written by the duo and Errol Thompson. Althea &
Donna thus at that time became the youngest female duo to reach the pinnacle of the UK chart.
Its been covered many times since. A sample of the 'No Pop, No Style' refrain from the record was used and formed part of the lyrics to Pop Will Eat Itself's (PWEI) 1991 single, 'X, Y &
Zee'.

Bingo or Housey Housey as some pensioners still call it is a gambling game of unknown origin. Players mark off numbers on a ticket as they are randomly called out, in order to achieve a winning combination.
The first column contains numbers from 1 to 9, The second column numbers from 10 to 19, The third 20 to 29 and so on up until the last column, which contains numbers from 80 to 90 (the 90 being placed in this column as well).
When called, numbers often aquire the types of preambles below:
Kelly's Eye 1, One Little Duck 2, Cup of Tea 3, Knock at the Door 4, Man Alive 5, Tom's Tricks 6, Lucky 7, Garden Gate 8, Doctors Orders 9, Tony's Den 10, Legs Eleven 11, One Dozen 12, Unlucky for Some 13, Key of the Door 21, Dirty Gertie 30, Down on your Knees 43, Heinz Varieties 57.
If you fancy yourself as a bingo caller, choose a handy mirror and have a go using any of the random phrases above. Alternatively, find some Reggae online, The Bob Marley 'One Love' compilation is as good as any place to start. Tell em I sent you!

Whatever happened to Pulp?
Pulp were an indy band formed in Sheffield way back in 1978. They split in 2002, they were Jarvis Cocker (vox &
guitar), the lovely Candida Doyle (keyboards), Mark Webber (guitar), Steve Mackey (bass), Nick Banks (drums) and Richard Hawley (guitar, backing vox).
Fame was slow, finally arriving with the 'Different Class' album in 1995, which reached the number one spot in the UK Albums Chart. Different Class spawned four top 10 singles, including 'Common People' and 'Sorted for E's &
Wizz', both of which reached number two in the UK Singles Chart.
Pulp's musical style during this period consisted of disco influenced pop-rock coupled with 'kitchen sink drama'-style lyrics. Jarvis Cocker and the band became major figures in the Britpop movement, and were nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 1994 for His 'n' Hers
they won the prize in 1996 for Different Class. They headlined the Pyramid Stage of the Glastonbury Festival. In 1996 I saw them at the V festival with Elastica, Cast &
Gary Numan.
The song is about those who were perceived by the songwriter as wanting to be 'like common people' and who ascribe glamour to poverty. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as slumming or 'class tourism'.
The inspiration for the song came from a Greek fellow student, Ambrosia Sakkadas, Pulp singer/songwriter Jarvis Cocker knew at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Taking this inspiration, the narrator explains that his female acquaintance can 'never be like common people', because even if she gets a flat where 'roaches climb the wall' ultimately, 'if [she] called [her] dad he could stop it all', in contrast to the true common people who can only 'watch [their] lives slide out of view'. In his lyric Cocker embellished the situation for dramatic effect - in real life the woman in question said she 'wanted to move to Hackney and live like 'the common people'', but in the song her character also declares: 'I want to sleep with common people like you.'.
The chorus melody apparently has similarities to the ELP track 'Fanfare for the Common Man'. To totally mash your head up, click here to hear the William Shatner cover version.
------------------------
Its often said that in the UK most news stories are fundamentally about class, while in the states they are generally about race. I am certain there is an element of truth in this.
From a sociological point of view the class system in Britain changed substantially during the 'Thatcher Era'. Home ownership (on mortgage) was extended throughout the middle classes and below. With the loss of the majority of traditional working class industrial jobs from the market, a new 'underclass', below working class emerged. The 'underclass', defined as unemployed relying on state benefits, is the new bottom of the British class system.
In Britain people considered of lower social standing can earn high incomes, but an individual's social class is still largely assessed by their parent's mannerisms, education etc. People watching late evening in any Uk city can tell a lot about people.
Perhaps if people could afford it, they would have been collected by their butler or manservent, or boarded a taxi, rather than wait for the 86 First Buses Charlotte Square service to Birkendale.
Its clean and cheap and theres one every half an hour. Unfortunately, I had given my domestics that evening off, so I joined them myself after snapping off this five shot 180 degree joiner.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PG69G6 - Yard Of Ale formed originally in 1972 and had ten successful years on the pub and club circuit, winning the TV Times Pub Entertainers of the Year award, doing well on ITV's New Faces and appearing on many television and radio shows including STV's Thingummyjig and BBC Scotland's Scottish Radio Orchestra Roadshow. During this time they also supported, amongst others, Matt McGinn, Hamish Imlach and Billy Connolly and enjoyed an extended run at the Edinburgh Festival with the legendary Tim Hardin.
Thereafter they went their separate ways........Alistair McDougald performing solo on the club cabaret circuit, Colin Mackenzie forming and playing with North Sea Gas folk group and Ian Lawson leading a successful rock band.
In 1992 the group reformed for a project in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with Bill Hill in which they performed acoustic music spanning 30 years........Skiffle, Folk, Protest, Calypso, Country and Contemporary.
One of the hits of this year's festival - Danny Kyle, BBC Radio Scotland.
Since then the band have been in great demand for concerts, folk festivals, corporate functions, pub, hotel and club gigs all over Scotland and on tour in Denmark and Ireland.
Peter Gillan joined the band when Ian retired due to work commitments in 1998. Having spent many years as a singer/guitarist playing solo on the folk and country scenes, Peter's experience has added yet another dimension to the band.
Walter Mowat joined Yard Of Ale in 2015. Walter has played in a number of folk and bluegrass bands over the years and also plays violin with the Really Terrible Orchestra.
Ian Lawson and Colin Mackenzie still occasionally feature with the band for larger gigs and as emergency stand-ins.
