Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R0MMXN - The Pierhead Building (Welsh: Adeilad y Pierhead) is a Grade I listed building in Cardiff Bay, Wales. One of Cardiff's most familiar landmarks, it was built in 1897 as the headquarters for the Bute Dock Company.
The Pierhead Building is part of the estate of the Senedd (Welsh Parliament
Welsh: Senedd Cymru), which also includes the Senedd building and T Hywel. The clock on the building is unofficially known as the Baby Big Ben or the Big Ben of Wales.
The building was built in 1897 and designed by the English architect William Frame. It was a replacement for the headquarters of the Bute Dock Company which burnt down in 1892. Frame's mentor was William Burges, with whom he worked on the rebuilding of Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch until Burges's death in 1881.
The Bute Dock Company was renamed the Cardiff Railway Company in 1897. A coat of arms on the building's fa??ade bears the company's motto Wrth ddr a th?n (by water and fire), encapsulating the elements creating the steam power which transformed Wales.
The building became the administrative office for the Port of Cardiff in 1947.
The 1897 clock mechanism, by William Potts & Sons of Leeds, was removed and replaced with an electronic motor, and auctioned off by British Rail and sold to an American collector in 1973. It was returned to Cardiff in 2005 and in 2011 was restored by Smith of Derby Group and installed as a piece of contemporary art created by the artist Marianne Forrest in Cardiff city centre.
Architecture
Incorporating a French-Gothic Renaissance theme, the Pierhead boasts details such as hexagonal chimneys, carved friezes, gargoyles, and a highly ornamental and distinctive clock tower. Its exterior is finished in glazed terracotta blocks supplied at the end of the 19th century by J. C. Edwards & Co. of Acrefair, near Ruabon in Wrexham County Borough
they were once described as one of the most successful producers of terracotta in the world.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M6YFFF - Wild Drawing 3D street art adorns Cheltenham Midland hotel wall.
An Indonesian street artist has completed a huge painting on the side of a Cheltenham hotel.
The mural depicts the French cartoonist and writer Moebeus, and was painted by the artist Wild Drawing, otherwise known as WD.
Originally from Bali, he hides his true identity and paints all over the world, specialising in 3D designs.
His work on the side of the Midland Hotel is believed to be the first artwork he has created in the UK.
The new artwork took 10 days to create and was produced by the Athens-based artist as part of the Cheltenham Paint Festival, which takes place every September.
It was due to have been finished earlier, but was finally completed last week after delays due to bad weather.
Festival director Andrew Davies said WD used a mini-roller on the end of a 4m (13ft)-long pole to sketch out the painting.
He learned to do this in his native Bali when starting out as he didn't have the money available for lifts etc, and has carried on ever since, he said.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JJGB2E - The French House is a pub and dining room at 49 Dean Street, Soho, London. It was previously known as the York Minster, but was informally called the French pub or the French house by its regulars. It sells more Ricard than anywhere else in Britain, and only serves beer in half-pints except on 1 April, when a recent custom apparently has been that Suggs serves the first pint of the day
The pub was opened by a German national named Christian Schmitt in 1891 and traded as York Minster. Schmitt died in 1911. His wife, Bertha Margaretha Schmitt, continued to run the pub until 1914
After the fall of France during the Second World War, General Charles de Gaulle escaped to London where he formed the Free French Forces. His speech rallying the French people, ?? tous les Fran??ais, is said to have been written in the pub.
The French House has always been popular with artists and writers. Brendan Behan wrote large portions of The Quare Fellow there, and Dylan Thomas once left the manuscript of Under Milk Wood under his chair. Other regulars over the years have included Francis Bacon, Tom Baker, Daniel Farson, Lucian Freud, Slim Gaillard, Augustus John, Malcolm Lowry, and John Mortimer.
The name was changed to The French House after the fire at York Minster in 1984. Contributions toward the restoration fund started arriving at the pub. Upon forwarding them, Gaston Berlemont found that the cathedral had been receiving deliveries of claret intended for him.
In recent years, landlady Lesley Lewis has encouraged Soho photographers to exhibit in the pub with regular contributions from John Claridge, William Corbett, Carla Borel and Peter Clark
and members of illustrators' collective, Le Gun. Claridge based his Soho Faces project at the French from 2004 to 2017. He said, I decided to document the customers at The French in earnest. For me, it was the one place in Soho that still held its Bohemian character, where people truly chose to share time and conversation

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P8KF04 - House of Fraser is a British department store group with 54 stores across the United Kingdom and Ireland. It was established in Glasgow, Scotland in 1849 as Arthur and Fraser. By 1891, it was known as Fraser & Sons. The company grew steadily during the early 20th century, and after the Second World War a large number of acquisitions transformed the company into a national chain.
From 1936 onwards the company expanded substantially through acquisitions, including Scottish Drapery Corporation (1952), Binns (1953), Barkers of Kensington (1957), and Dickins & Jones and the Harrods group (1959). In 1948, the company was first listed on the London Stock Exchange. Later acquisitions included Howells (1972) and Army & Navy Stores (1973).
Ownership of the group passed to the Al Fayed family in 1985 (?615million), and in 1995 it was listed in the FTSE Index as House of Fraser plc, with Harrods moved into the private ownership of the Al Fayeds. In the 1990s several stores were closed and fifteen stores transferred to a joint venture with British Land Company, which then continued operating under their old name. The former Harrod group store D H Evans on Oxford Street, London was re-branded as House of Fraser in 2001 and became the chain's flagship store.
In May 2018, the group entered a company voluntary arrangement, and in June the closure of 31 stores was announced. On 10 August 2018 Mike Ashley's Sports Direct chain agreed to buy the business (stores, stock, brand) for ?90 million after the chain went into administration earlier that day.

The budding artichoke flower-head is a cluster of many budding small flowers (an inflorescence), together with many bracts, on an edible base. Once the buds bloom, the structure changes to a coarse, barely edible form. Another variety of the same species is the cardoon, a perennial plant native to the Mediterranean region. Both wild forms and cultivated varieties (cultivars) exist.

The Church stands not east-west but square to the Roman Road north through Carlisle (the A6, in town Blackfriars St). It is therefore of early foundation, perhaps before St Cuthbert's visit to Carlisle in 685. The present Church, probably the fourth on the site, dates from 1778.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64KDA - This image shows a close-up of a weathered vintage sign advertising Escargots 60c, referring to snails, a traditional dish in French cuisine. The hand-painted lettering and decorative flourishes are rendered in warm tones of orange, green, and brown, set against a heavily worn background that shows cracking paint, surface abrasion, and age-related patina.
Signs such as this were commonly used in caf??s, bistros, markets, and street food settings to advertise menu items and prices before standardised printed menus became widespread. The simple pricing and bold typography reflect a period when food was sold informally and visually, often catering to passing trade.
Escargots have long been associated with regional and national French gastronomy, symbolising traditional cooking methods and local culinary identity. The inclusion of the price in centimes suggests historical context, reinforcing the sign's value as an artefact of everyday food culture rather than formal advertising.
Photographed tightly to emphasise texture, lettering, and wear, the image works well as editorial material illustrating culinary heritage, vintage food marketing, typography, and the aesthetics of aged signage. It is particularly suited to features on French culture, gastronomy, retro design, and the material history of everyday commerce.

The cheap and cheerful manicure has been the success story of the recession. The number of nail bars has increased by 20 per cent in the past year alone.
Earlier this year it was revealed that they are the fastest-growing business on the High Street, constituting 16 per cent of new outlets in the past three years. There are now 30,000 in the UK.

August, always a mad busy crazy time in Edinburgh, during the festival and fringe, which seems to have grown even bigger than the tattoo and festival.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (The Fringe) is the world's largest arts festival, with the 2012 event spanning 25 days totalling over 2,695 shows from 47 countries in 279 venues. Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place annually in Scotland's capital, in the month of August. The Fringe is a showcase for the performing arts, particularly theatre and comedy (which has seen substantial growth in recent years), although dance and music are also represented. In 2012, 36% of shows were comedy and 28% theatrical productions. Theatrical productions range from the classics of ancient Greece to William Shakespeare, Samuel Beckett and contemporary works. In 2012, 1,418 shows were having their world premiere.
The Fringe is an unjuried festival – with no selection committee, and therefore any type of performance may participate. The Fringe has often showcased experimental works that might not be invited to a more conservative arts festival. In addition to ticketed, programmed events, the Festival has included a street fair, located primarily on the Royal Mile. The Festival is organized by the Festival Fringe Society, which publishes the programme, sells tickets, and offers advice to performers. Their offices are on the Royal Mile.

John Cooper Clarke (born 25 January 1949) is an English performance poet who first became famous during the punk rock era of the late 1970s when he became known as a 'punk poet'.[1] He released several albums in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and continues to perform regularly.
His recorded output has mainly centred around musical backing from The Invisible Girls, which featured Martin Hannett, Pete Shelley, Bill Nelson, Paul Burgess and Steve Hopkins.
His first releases were on the independent label Rabid, starting with the EP Innocents in October 1977. He toured with Bill Nelson's band Be-Bop Deluxe in 1978 and was signed by Epic Records, who issued the Nelson-produced debut album Disguise In Love in 1978.
In 1979 he had his only UK top 40 hit with 'Gimmix! (Play Loud)'. Clarke toured with Linton Kwesi Johnson, and has performed on the same bill as bands such as Sex Pistols, The Fall, Joy Division, Buzzcocks, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Elvis Costello, Rockpile, and New Order (including at their May 1984 Music for Miners benefit concert at London's Royal Festival Hall). His set is characterised by lively, rapid-fire renditions of his poems, usually performed a cappella. Often referred to as 'the bard of Salford', he usually refers to himself on stage as 'Johnny Clarke, the name behind the hairstyle'.

The trees almost match the colour of the olive vinyl on Overkill, the Motorhead album from which this comes. I remember the sunny afternoon I bought it from 'Peak Radio' in the high street in Glossop, Derbyshire.
Bronze Records signed the band in 1978 and gave them time in Wessex Studios in London to record Richard Berry's 'Louie Louie' and a new song by the band, 'Tear Ya Down'. The band toured to promote their single 'Louie Louie' while Chiswick released the Motörhead album in white vinyl, to keep the momentum going. Sales of the single brought the band their first appearance on BBC Television's Top of the Pops, which gave Bronze the confidence to get the band back into the studio to record a second album.
The first release from those sessions was the single release of 'Overkill' backed with 'Too Late, Too Late' in 7' and 12' pressings. The Chiswick album 'Motörhead' had been a hasty affair as was its production, although it had a sub-bootleg quality which may be appealing, Overkill had more spring and bounce, and a thundering title track that would become a show-stopper for years to come. Three weeks after the initial release of the album in black vinyl, the album was released in a limited edition of 15,000 in green vinyl.
In June 1979 'No Class' was lifted from the album as a follow-up single, backed with a previously unreleased song, 'Like a Nightmare'. With a view to increasing the sales, the single was released in three different covers, one each of Lemmy, Clarke and Taylor.
The Paris metro has a uniform architecture influenced by Art Nouveau. Paris has one of the densest metro networks in the world, with 245 stations within 86.9 km2 (34 sq mi) of the city of Paris. Lines are numbered 1 to 14, with two minor lines, 3bis and 7bis. The minor lines were originally part of lines 3 and 7 but became independent.
The Métro's original art nouveau entrances are iconic symbols of Paris, and 83 survive. Designed by Hector Guimard in a style that caused some surprise and controversy in 1900, there are two main variants:
The most elaborate feature glass canopies. Three still exist, at Porte Dauphine, Abbesses, and at the intersection of Rue des Halles and Rue Sainte-Opportune.
The rest have a cast-iron balustrade decorated in plant-like motifs, accompanied by a 'Métropolitain' sign supported by two orange globes atop ornate cast-iron supports in the form of plant stems.
Several of the iconic Guimard entrances have been given to other cities. The only original one on a metro station outside Paris is the one at Square-Victoria station in Montreal, as a monument to the collaboration of RATP engineers. Replicas cast from the original molds have been given to the Lisbon Metro (Picoas station)
the Mexico City Metro (Metro Bellas Artes, with a 'Metro' sign), offered as a gift in return for a Huichol mural currently displayed at Palais Royal – Musée du Louvre station
and Chicago Metra (Van Buren Street, at South Michigan Avenue and East Van Buren Street, with a 'Metra' sign), given in 2001. Also, there is an entrance on display at the Sculpture Garden in Downtown Washington D.C. This does not actually lead to an actual D.C. metro station, it is just for pleasure.
This is a shot taken with an IR adapted camera, utilising a 720nm red filter.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HTEY - Paris Tour Eiffel Tower Carousel Champ de Mars at Dusk.
The Eiffel Tower is an iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris, named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower. Erected in 1889 as the entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair, it has become both a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The tower is the tallest structure in Paris[10] and the most-visited paid monument in the world
7.1 million people ascended it in 2011. The third level observatory's upper platform is at 279.11 m (915.7 ft) the highest accessible to the public in the European Union. The tower received its 250 millionth visitor in 2010.
The tower stands 324 metres (1,063 ft) tall, about the same height as an 81-storey building. During its construction, the Eiffel Tower surpassed the Washington Monument to assume the title of the tallest man-made structure in the world, a title it held for 41 years, until the Chrysler Building in New York City was built in 1930. Because of the addition, in 1957, of the antenna atop the Eiffel Tower, it is now taller than the Chrysler Building. Not including broadcast antennas, it is the second-tallest structure in France, after the Millau Viaduct.
The tower has three levels for visitors. Tickets can be purchased to ascend, by stairs or lift (elevator), to the first and second levels. The walk from ground level to the first level is over 300 steps, as is the walk from the first to the second level. The third and highest level is accessible only by lift?stairs do exist but are usually closed to the public. The first and second levels have restaurants.
The tower has become the most prominent symbol of both Paris and France, often in the establishing shot of films set in the city.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DD4GCG - Caf?? Rouge is a French-styled restaurant chain, with over 120 sites across the UK. Caf?? Rouge is part of a bigger restaurant network owned by Casual Dining Group Ltd.
Caf?? Rouge was founded by Roger Myers and Karen Jones, in Richmond, London as a small restaurant chain in 1989. As the brand grew, Myers and Jones incorporated the chain into a larger restaurant group: the Pelican Group. In July 1996, Whitbread purchased Pelican Group - comprising 110 restaurants under the D??me, Mamma Amalfi and, primarily, Caf?? Rouge brands - for ?133m
The restaurant chain gained much exposure after frequently being mentioned in the 1996 novel Bridget Jones's Diary, with the main character Bridget Jones (and her friends) visiting her local branch of the restaurant regularly throughout the novel.[4]
In May 2002, Whitbread sold Pelican to Tragus Group in a management buy-in for ?25m.[5]
In 2009, Caf?? Rouge began a partnership with the Gourmet Society, offering their members discounts on production of a Gourmet Society restaurant discount card.
In February 2011, Caf?? Rouge introduced a new fast-service format to the brand. Caf?? Rouge Express at London Euston railway station and Southampton's WestQuay shopping centre, aims to reduce customer waiting time and the reduced menu range is available to eat in or take away.
In 2012, it was reported that Caf?? Rouge intended investing in excess of ?20m refurbishing its restaurants over the next few years, starting with the Hampstead branch. Created by Afroditi Krassa, the new design is inspired by classic but urban Parisian bistros, whilst remaining sensitive to the essence of the original Caf?? Rouge. The design will be rolled out across 125 restaurants within three years, with interiors tailored to each site.
In September 2012, Caf?? Rouge joined the Nectar loyalty card reward scheme as a redemption partner.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4774887884 - 'I don't know about you but I never look forward to that ritual of buying a car. There was no such ceremony when buying my first one, a green Vauxhall Viva 3 door hatchback from a family friend. Only £230 but it cost me in excess of that in filler to keep the wings safely stuck together.
Luckily I left the Citroen garage in Warrington in a relative state of relaxed karma after Steve Johnson here had relieved me of a £500 deposit. He was less relaxed as one of his business vans had just gone walkabout the previous day, on an east bound journey to Irlam on the A57. Its a 'pleasure - pain' thing I like to think!
How do celebs buy a car? Perhaps they have helpers and servants who just sort it. If you were Madonna you may well follow the Kabbalah example. If you are needing or thinking you want to change your car I have provided a simple extract from the good book. The magicians Kabbalah (rather than the Haynes manual):
'For example, an Oath taken as part of a car-buying ritual might begin 'The point of this work is to buy a car (Kether). I wish to buy a car with all the energy I have (Chockmah). I require the car to be a model most suitable to my needs (Binah). I seek a car which is affordable (Chesed) and for which I will be able to strike a good bargain for (Geburah),' and so on.'
So there it is. Although if you were looking for a Citroen van or car, you might try giving Steve a ring on 01925-853155.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HF85 - A moody dusk street scene in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, showing a lone man walking along Rue Saint-Dominique past the Thoumieux restaurant at number 79. The restaurant's vertical red neon sign glows against the muted tones of the surrounding buildings, casting warm light onto the pavement and contrasting with the cool blue-grey sky above. The narrow street stretches toward the Eiffel Tower, which rises faintly in the distance and anchors the scene unmistakably within the Parisian cityscape.
The composition captures an everyday moment of Parisian life rather than a staged tourist view. Parked cars line the street, shopfronts are closed or dimly lit, and the pedestrian moves forward with purpose, suggesting routine, familiarity and solitude rather than spectacle. The lighting and perspective create a cinematic atmosphere, evoking themes of evening transition, urban rhythm and the quiet intervals between daytime activity and nightlife.
Rue Saint-Dominique runs through one of Paris's most established residential and dining districts, close to the Seine and the Champ de Mars. The presence of the Thoumieux restaurant, a long-standing name in Parisian gastronomy, reinforces associations with food culture, local neighbourhood life and understated elegance. The red neon signage adds a distinctly European visual language, recalling mid-twentieth-century caf?? and brasserie traditions.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF0MXE - A red Citroen Xsara Picasso MPV pictured inside a small independent backstreet vehicle repair garage in the United Kingdom, undergoing an air conditioning service with refrigerant refill and diagnostic equipment connected to the engine bay. The car's bonnet is raised, exposing the engine compartment, while hoses and gauges from a mobile air conditioning recharge machine are attached, indicating routine automotive maintenance.
The workshop interior shows a functional, working environment typical of many independent garages, with concrete block walls, industrial lighting, oil drums, tool storage, and automotive service signage visible. The scene reflects everyday vehicle ownership and maintenance, particularly the servicing of climate control systems, which has become increasingly important for driver comfort and vehicle resale value.
This image is suitable for editorial use relating to motoring, vehicle maintenance, small independent businesses, automotive servicing costs, and consumer car ownership, as well as commercial applications illustrating car repair, garage services, air conditioning systems, and the automotive repair industry in the UK.
