Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DGE74K - The Rams Head public house in the village of Grappenhall near Warrington, Cheshire, is shown during a cold winter period in January with light snow covering the ground and a decorated Christmas tree standing outside the pub. The historic building, with its mix of brickwork and traditional architectural features, is set against clear blue skies and low winter sunlight, which highlights the textures of the walls, roof and surrounding outdoor seating areas. Snow settled on benches and pathways reinforces the seasonal setting and the crisp atmosphere of a winter's day in rural England.
Village pubs such as the Rams Head have long played an important role in British social and cultural life, acting as meeting places, landmarks and centres of community activity. During the winter and festive season, pubs often become visual symbols of warmth and tradition, even when photographed without people present. The Christmas tree outside the pub adds a seasonal focal point, linking the image to themes of celebration, tradition and continuity within English village life.
The photograph reflects wider themes of British pub culture, hospitality, leisure and local identity, as well as seasonal change and winter weather in the United Kingdom. It is suitable for editorial use in travel and lifestyle features, hospitality coverage, festive and winter-themed publications, calendars and broader cultural storytelling focused on traditional England, rural communities and the enduring presence of village pubs within the countryside.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM981K - A documentary, street-level view of the Arden Arms on Millgate in Stockport, photographed to emphasise the pub's traditional branding and heritage character. The image centres on the exterior signage: a prominent hanging sign reading ARDEN ARMS and a matching illuminated box sign mounted on the brick fa??ade, both designed for high visibility to pedestrians and passing traffic. The red brickwork, period proportions, and tidy frontage details suggest a long-established town-centre pub, with hanging flower baskets adding a softer, welcoming touch against the harder urban materials.
Seasonal cues come through in the crisp light and the trees visible beyond the building, which show late-season colour and bare branches typical of late autumn or winter. The sky is clear and bright, producing clean edges and strong contrast on the brickwork and sign frames, and giving the scene that cold-weather clarity you often get on a dry day in Greater Manchester. The composition works well as a clear location identifier because the pub name is readable and the building is photographed in a recognisable, matter-of-fact documentary style rather than as a staged hospitality interior.
Editorially, the photo is useful for stories about British pub culture, real ale and cask beer, independent hospitality, and the survival of historic pubs in modern high streets. The Arden Arms is also a listed heritage asset in Stockport, so the image can support coverage about local history, conservation, and traditional buildings still in everyday commercial use. It is equally suitable for travel and lifestyle pieces on Stockport town centre, pub trails, and authentic Northern England streetscapes where pubs remain part of the social fabric.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CJDPN3 - A freestanding sign promoting Chadwick's Original Bury Black Puddings at Bury Market Hall in Greater Manchester. The sign advertises both hot and cold black pudding, reflecting the everyday, practical nature of market food retail and the enduring popularity of this traditional Lancashire product.
Bury is nationally synonymous with black pudding, a food deeply rooted in northern English working-class food culture and historic meat-processing traditions. Chadwick's is one of the best-known traders at Bury Market, with a reputation built over decades among local shoppers and visitors alike. The straightforward, functional signage reinforces the stall's emphasis on tradition, familiarity and quality rather than novelty.
The image was taken indoors under artificial market-hall lighting, typical of year-round trading conditions, and captures a small but culturally significant detail of British food heritage. It is well suited for editorial use illustrating regional identity, traditional British cuisine, historic markets, local economies and the persistence of everyday food traditions in modern England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CJDPN8 - A view of Chadwick's food stall at Bury Market in Greater Manchester, displaying signage advertising Original Bury Black Puddings, one of the town's most famous culinary exports. The stall is part of the indoor market complex and is known locally and nationally for the quality and consistency of its traditional black pudding.
Bury Market has long been associated with black pudding production, a food deeply rooted in Lancashire and Northern English working-class food culture. Chadwick's is among the best-known traders, attracting steady custom from local residents, visitors and food enthusiasts. The popularity of the stall is such that a formal queuing system is in place, reflecting both high demand and the enduring appeal of traditional market food in a modern retail environment.
The image captures a slice of everyday life in a northern English market, where food heritage, routine commerce and community interaction intersect. It is well suited to editorial use illustrating British regional food, culinary tradition, local markets, consumer culture, and the survival of historic food practices within contemporary urban life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6C2 - A novelty barbecue apron printed with the slogan Prick With A Fork, photographed on display at a stall in Bury Market, Bury BL9 0SW, Greater Manchester. The apron is shown on a mannequin within a temporary market setup, surrounded by wire racks and retail goods typical of open-air market trading.
Bury Market is one of the best-known traditional markets in the UK, with a long history of independent traders selling food, household goods, clothing and novelty items. Humorous aprons and slogan merchandise form part of the market's informal retail culture, appealing to customers looking for playful gifts, barbecue accessories or light-hearted kitchen humour.
The slogan reflects a distinctly British style of cheeky wordplay, balancing innuendo with everyday domestic imagery. Items like this are often purchased for birthdays, Father's Day, Christmas or as jokey gifts linked to outdoor cooking, barbecues and casual entertaining.
The image captures the character of market retail, where humour, personality and impulse buying play an important role alongside price and practicality. Photographed in daylight under a market canopy, the scene documents a small but familiar aspect of British consumer culture and independent trading.
The photograph offers strong editorial value for themes including British humour, novelty gifts, market culture, independent retail and everyday food-related lifestyle, making it suitable for use in lifestyle features, retail commentary, cultural journalism and social observation pieces.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6BY - Close-up view of a Fat Burgers sign photographed in Birmingham city centre, Birmingham B5, West Midlands. The bold, graphic design features large white lettering and coloured stripes associated with burger branding, making the sign highly visible within the urban streetscape.
Independent fast-food outlets such as Fat Burgers form a significant part of Birmingham's diverse food scene, serving local residents, students and night-time economy customers alongside national chains. Burger takeaways in particular have become a staple of UK high streets, reflecting changing eating habits that favour convenience, affordability and informal dining.
Birmingham is known for its multicultural food culture and dense concentration of independent eateries, especially in and around the city centre. Signs like this contribute to the visual identity of urban food districts, where branding, colour and typography are used to compete for attention in busy commercial areas.
Images of takeaway signage are often used editorially to illustrate stories about high-street change, small food businesses, fast-food consumption, urban lifestyles and the economics of independent hospitality. Photographed in daylight with the sign filling the frame, the image isolates the branding from its surroundings, making it suitable for reuse in a wide range of editorial and design contexts.
The photograph offers strong editorial value for themes including fast-food culture, independent retail, urban eating habits and contemporary life in British cities, particularly within discussions about the evolving role of takeaways on UK high streets.

Wild Card Brewery is part of a wider cluster of independent creative and food-and-drink businesses that have taken root in former light-industrial premises across Walthamstow. Facilities such as the Barrel Store are used for ageing beer in oak barrels, allowing flavours to develop over extended periods and linking modern craft brewing with traditional production techniques.
The scene is photographed in daylight under a partly cloudy sky, with picnic-style outdoor seating visible in front of the building, suggesting use as both a working production space and a customer-facing retail or tasting area. The image shows the modern retail building with a glazed fa??ade, internal lighting, and the distinctive Lidl logo illuminated against a fading evening sky.
Lidl is a major European discount supermarket chain with a significant presence across the UK, known for its focus on value pricing, private-label goods, and a limited-assortment retail model. Stores such as this form an important part of everyday local shopping infrastructure, serving surrounding residential communities and supporting town-centre and edge-of-centre retail provision.
Littleborough, a town within the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, combines historic Pennine mill heritage with contemporary retail and residential development. The presence of national supermarket chains reflects broader patterns in UK retail geography, where accessible food shopping remains a key anchor for local economies.
The photograph captures the store during early evening trading hours, with artificial lighting contrasting against the soft twilight sky. Visible pedestrian crossings, entrance canopies, and car parking emphasise the practical, functional design typical of modern British supermarket architecture. The image works as an editorial illustration of UK food retail, consumer habits, and everyday urban life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PGT90G - J Sainsbury plc, trading as Sainsbury's, is the second largest chain of supermarkets in the United Kingdom, with a 14.6% share of UK supermarket sales in September 2022.
Founded in 1869 by John James Sainsbury with a shop in Drury Lane, London, the company was the largest UK retailer of groceries for most of the 20th century. In 1995, Tesco became the market leader when it overtook Sainsbury's, which has since been ranked second or third: it was overtaken by Asda from 2003 to 2014, and again in 2019. In 2018, a planned merger with Asda was blocked by the Competition and Markets Authority over concerns of increased prices for consumers.
The holding company, J Sainsbury plc, is split into three divisions: Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd (including convenience shops), Sainsbury's Bank, and Argos. As of 2021, the largest overall shareholder is the sovereign wealth fund of Qatar, the Qatar Investment Authority, which holds 14.99% of the company. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.
In 2012, Jel Singh Nagra, a shop keeper from North Tyneside, was threatened with legal action from Sainsbury's after he named his shop Singhsbury's. It complained about his logo design and the name. Nagra changed the shop name to Morrisinghs. Morrisons wished him well.
A Singhbury's Local in Aylesbury removed its sign after intervention from Sainsbury's in 2017
Ownership in February 2023 was as follows:
Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) shareholding stood at 14.3% shares.
Vesa Equity Investment, the vehicle of Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky shareholding stood at 10% shares.
Costcutter owner Bestway shareholding stood at 4.47% shares

My child's got autism and it's hard saying to him that we haven't got the money ? I've never had to say that to him before. He likes his PlayStation and he hasn't been playing on it as much because he's worried he's using too much electricity.
We don't use the cooker or the toaster because they use too much energy. We mainly use the microwave. We're cutting down on washing and not washing as much as we used to. I'm permanently watching what I'm doing and what I'm using, which we never had to do before.
We aren't using the heating at all. It's all onesies and quilts. We just can't afford to have the heating on.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RH9DGM - The British tradition of eating fish battered and fried in oil was introduced to the country by Spanish and Portuguese Jewish immigrants, who spent time in the Netherlands before settling in the UK as early as the 16th century. They prepared fried fish in a manner similar to pescado frito, which is coated in flour then fried in oil. Fish fried for Shabbat for dinner on Friday evenings could be eaten cold the following afternoon for shalosh seudot, palatable this way as liquid vegetable oil was used rather than a hard fat, such as butter. Charles Dickens mentions fried fish warehouses in Oliver Twist (1838)
The modern fish-and-chip shop (chippy in modern British slang) originated in the United Kingdom, although outlets selling fried food occurred commonly throughout Europe. Early fish-and-chip shops had only very basic facilities. Usually these consisted principally of a large cauldron of cooking fat, heated by a coal fire. The fish-and-chip shop later evolved into a fairly standard format, with the food served, in paper wrappings, to queuing customers, over a counter in front of the fryers. As a boy, Alfred Hitchcock lived above a fish and chip shop in London, which was the family business. According to Professor John Walton, author of Fish and Chips and the British Working Class, the British government made safeguarding supplies of fish and chips during the First World War a priority: The cabinet knew it was vital to keep families on the home front in good heart, unlike the German regime that failed to keep its people well fed.
By 1910, there were over 25,000 fish and chip shops across the UK, a figure that grew to over 35,000 shops by the 1930s.Since then the trend has reversed, and in 2009 there were approximately 10,000 shops

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KG3YRB - With over 220 stalls across nine sites throughout the city centre, this year's Christmas Markets are set to bring some much-needed festive cheer to the city's streets and squares in the run-up to Christmas.
24 years on from the first ever Manchester Christmas Markets in 1998, the markets continue to attract Mancunians and visitors alike to the city in their thousands to fill up on the fantastic festive treats on offer.
This year will see the iconic ski chalet market stalls take over Piccadilly Gardens - once again set to be transformed into the Winter Gardens - Market Street, Cathedral Gardens, Exchange Street, New Cathedral Street, St Ann's Square, Exchange Square, The Corn Exchange, and King Street.
Making sure the city looks its sparkly best in the run-up to Christmas is of course just as important and this year sees the return of the magical Manchester Christmas lights trail, illuminating the city centre throughout the festive season with its walk-through giant baubles, a Manchester bee, and of course Santa Claus himself - who will be keeping an eye on all things Christmas in Manchester from his perch on high in front of Central Library on St Peter's Square.
For those who look forward to a seasonal skate, Skate Manchester's family-friendly covered ice rink will once again take up its usual spot in Cathedral Gardens where skaters can skate around a beautiful Christmas tree and enjoy twinkling lights, the smell of gingerbread, and Christmas songs on repeat.
New for 2022, Festive Sundays will see the city's streets and squares filled with some extra special not-to-be-missed Manchester Christmas magic as roaming puppets, supersized penguins and illuminated bands take to the city's main shopping streets, every Sunday from 13 November - 18 December.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K6GW3J - Angus Steakhouse is a restaurant chain of steak houses in central London. In 2001, there were about 30 outlets
five remain open as of July 2020. The name reflects Aberdeen Angus, a common breed of beef cattle. Some restaurants still retain the former trading name, Aberdeen Steak Houses, on their signage, as of September 2016.
Aberdeen Steak Houses was started in the early 1960s by Reginald Eastwood (born c.1913), who had started in business aged 15 as an apprentice butcher.[citation needed] Eastwood's vision was for a more modern version of the earlier chop-house grills, and was influenced by American steak houses. The d??cor was opulent, with plate glass windows and red velour banquettes. Menus included trendy dishes like prawn cocktail and Black Forest gateau
By the 1970s, the group was focused more on tourist trade, with many branches in the West End to attract those attending theatre or musical shows
In 1984, the group was sold to Ali Salih, a Turkish businessman with a low public profile. The menu and d??cor showed little update since the 1960s, and the brand got a reputation as tourist traps for Its business, along with the wider UK beef industry, was hit in the 1990s by bovine spongiform encephalopathy,(BSE) then by foot and mouth disease in 2001.It made a loss of ?3m in 2000
decline in American tourists after the September 11 attacks was also cited by Salih after the group went into receivership in October 2002, with ?7m in debt.
In 2011, actor and comedian David Mitchell championed the cause of Aberdeen Angus Steak Houses in his opinion column in The Guardian, proposing that they be a nominee for a British World Heritage bid, citing them as being unique to British culture because of their proud heritage of serving shoe leather with B??arnaise sauce to neon-addled out-of-towners

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K6C9BG - Hackney could be called the chicken shop capital of London, the love of spicy wings or thighs a common service
Greasy chicken bones litter the streets like cigarette butts in a borough caught by Kentucky fried fever. Abdal Khan, of ?Chicken and Pizza' on Amhurst Road, dubbed Hackney the chicken capital of the world and it's hard to see otherwise.
The growing abundance of fried food shops is underlined by the fact that there are now more than two for each secondary school in the borough.
The shops centre on Stoke Newington and other districts with the right demographics. These are targeted operations not just random start ups.
Residents should be careful though when ordering their wings, many chicken shops have a poor food rating. ?Dixy Chicken' in Hackney Central, one of the 20 takeaways listed on the database, has a paltry one out of five star rating, indicating that the establishment is failing to comply fully with Britain's food hygiene laws.
A 25-year-old Hackney fried chicken shop worker of five years, spoke of the industry's bad practice.
After cooking a piece of battered chicken, you can only serve it within an hour, but staff leave it on a low heat all day, creating a breeding ground for bacteria, he said.
They do it to cut costs and get the most out of their stock.
It should be noted that the problem is not limited to chicken shops. There are around 160 fried food takeaways in the area, which equals eight per square kilometre. With this concentration, residents are never more than a 10 minute walk away from a deep-fried treat. A chicken and chips meal will set you back ?1, making it a clucking good deal.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD23R8 - Filey is a seaside town and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It is located between Scarborough and Bridlington on Filey Bay. Although it was a fishing village, it has a large beach and became a popular tourist resort. According to the 2011 UK census, Filey parish had a population of 6,981, in comparison to the 2001 UK census population figure of 6,819, and a population of 6,870 in 1991.
Filey was historically mainly within the East Riding of Yorkshire, although until 1888 a small part of the town, including its parish church, was in the North Riding of Yorkshire. In 1974 the town was transferred to the new county of North Yorkshire.
Filey is at the eastern end of the Cleveland Way, a long-distance footpath
it starts at Helmsley and skirts the North York Moors. It was the second National Trail to be opened (1969). The town is at the northern end of the Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail which starts at Hessle and crosses the Yorkshire Wolds. Filey is the finishing point for Great Yorkshire Bike Ride. The 70-mile (110 km) ride begins at Wetherby Racecourse.
Filey has a railway station on the Yorkshire Coast Line. A second station at Filey Holiday Camp railway station to the south of the town served the former Butlins holiday camp. The camp has since been re-developed into a 600-home holiday housing development, The Bay Filey. It is one of the largest coastal developments of this kind in the UK and the first homes were completed in 2007.
In July 2007 Filey was hit by flash floods which caused major problems

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD243H - This image shows the exterior window display and signage of Sandgate Coffee, an independent takeaway coffee shop located on Sandgate in the historic seaside town of Whitby, North Yorkshire. The hand-painted sign describes the caf?? as the Home of the Whitby Fatties, a local variation of the traditional Yorkshire Fat Rascals cake, a rich baked treat associated with the region.
The shop window features a colourful and decorative cake display in shades of pink, designed to attract passing visitors and highlight the caf??'s baking theme. A clear notice indicates that the business operates on a takeaway-only basis, reflecting the small footprint typical of many independent food outlets in Whitby's busy tourist streets.
Whitby is well known for its strong food heritage, including jet jewellery, seafood, and regional baking traditions. Small caf??s such as Sandgate Coffee contribute to the town's appeal as a destination for food tourism, offering locally themed specialities alongside everyday refreshments.
The photograph documents a detail of Whitby's independent retail and food culture, capturing how local identity and traditional recipes are used to create distinctive offerings within a popular tourist town.

The Market began in 1500. The market building used today dates from 1867. There is a Market on three days a week, and there are stalls inside and out. Nantwich is a busy shopping centre with many fine food, drink and clothing retailers.
Nantwich is an ancient settlement and there were Romans here. The ?wich' part of the name comes from salt, which the town remains famous for. The local salt springs were good for making salt, and in the 1900s were popular for health tourists. The town still has a popular heated outdoor brine swimming pool.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07AAB - The Chinatown Gate is a grand entryway into London's lively Chinatown district and a cultural landmark. Boasting a tile roof and red pillars that lead into a vibrant area of red lanterns, noodle shops and street signs with Chinese script, the Chinatown Gate is a must-visit landmark on your way to explore the cultural area.
Each year, roughly 17 million people pass through the Chinatown Gate to visit the cultural enclave and sample delicious Chinese foods. With attractions and dining for families and solo travellers alike, Chinatown is a popular destination for sightseeing and shopping.
London's original Chinatown dates back to the start of the 20th century, but after the Blitz of World War II, many of the shops and restaurants moved to other locations. The current Chinatown, located off Shaftesbury Avenue, was established in the 1970s. The Chinatown Gate was completed in 2016 and stands as one of the largest Chinese gates in the country.
The Chinatown Gate marks the entry into Chinatown and its bustling restaurants and shops. The gate is designed with ornate features done in a traditional Qing Dynasty style that complements the stone lions, contemporary Chinese artwork and other traditional Chinese entrance points to the enclave
Along with seeing the gate itself, you can explore the wonders of Chinatown after stopping at the landmark. Chinatown features many buildings and streets with traditional dragons and lanterns, as well as street signs with English and Chinese writing.
Chinatown is also a haven for art lovers. You'll find contemporary art sculptures, impressive religious sculptures and the iconic stone lions. Chinatown is especially interesting during events, such as Chinese New Year, which features parades with floats, lion dances and live performances. You'll also see hundreds of red lanterns during the New Year celebrations that make for a spectacular sight

A BOLD EXPRESSION IN KFC'S NEW STORE DESIGN
Designing KFC's innovative restaurant concept and brand expression
There are dramatic changes afoot in the world of ?Quick Service Retailing', driven by new levels of consumer expectations and dynamic new food experiences. This revolution is exemplified by KFC's mission to express its true values, much loved product proposition and brand story, through the experience in its restaurants. Having already taken KFC several leaps forwards in its transformation through small, fast-casual metropolitan concept, I-AM secured the brief to update the design, customer journey and in-restaurant communications for KFC's primary format.
KFC's Brand Personality
KFC's story is irresistible
and its personality has always been inseparable from a joyful love of chicken. Lately a bold energy and vibrancy is driving KFC in the UK, celebrating the brand's story, taking pride in the simple, joyful deliciousness of Finger Lickin' Good fresh fried chicken and the social aspect of bringing people together over a KFC. These themes are being newly expressed.

After initial proposals to create a memorial library, museum or botanical gardens, the committee decided to erect a statue in a decorated canopy. It was originally planned to place the monument in front of the Royal Infirmary building at Piccadilly, between the statues of Wellington and Peel. However it was felt that its ornate Gothic design was not in keeping with the neoclassical infirmary.[3] In 1863, land was offered by the Corporation which was cleared to make way for a public space

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A4PJNY - Wanting to increase their presence and market share, Greggs opened their first Moto-operated franchised bakery at Lymm truckstop in early 2012, with high hopes. Following good sales a second store was opened at Birch eastbound the following June, and it was then confirmed that most Moto services would get one. Moto have also been opening franchises at some Extra services.
What makes Greggs a little bit different to other new brands is that most units have been modified so customers can visit without entering the main amenity building. This helped Moto's tax accounts: by not offering the option of eat-in food, the food was exempt from VAT, although the notorious pasty tax complicated things. As with most service station franchises, prices are inflated and the menu is altered slightly.
Greggs had never agreed to franchised stores before the Moto deal, but following its success they opened franchises with Euro Garages and Applegreen too (in the UK only). Greggs was now being added to petrol stations across the country, and Euro Garages started introducing the country's first Greggs drive thrus.
On the baked goods front, Moto had been using Upper Crust as a bakery brand, although this sold fewer hot goods and began to lose ground to Moto's other stores. In 2011 they also introduced West Cornwall Pasty Co., mostly in stands outside the services. Other operators have responded to Greggs with the likes of The Cornish Bakery, Pret a Manger and The Pasty Shop.
In line with Greggs's rules, service stations in the West Country are not allowed to sell Cornish pasties, for fear of upsetting the locals.

He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is also in English and a light Scots dialect, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland. He also wrote in standard English, and in these writings his political or civil commentary is often at its bluntest.
Haggis is a savoury pudding containing sheep's pluck (heart, liver, and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and cooked while traditionally encased in the animal's stomach[1] though now often in an artificial casing instead. According to the 2001 English edition of the Larousse Gastronomique: Although its description is not immediately appealing, haggis has an excellent nutty texture and delicious savoury flavour

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBJ9RA - Coney Island is a peninsular residential neighborhood, beach, and leisure/entertainment destination of Long Island on the Coney Island Channel, which is part of the Lower Bay in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City. Coney Island was formerly the westernmost of the Outer Barrier islands on Long Island's southern shore, but in the early 20th century it became connected to the rest of Long Island by land fill. The residential portion of the peninsula is a community of 60,000 people in its western part, with Sea Gate to its west, Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach to its east, the Lower Bay to the south, and Gravesend to the north.
Coney Island was originally part of the colonial town of Gravesend. By the mid-19th century, it became a seaside resort, and by the late 19th century, amusement parks were also built at the location. The attractions reached a historical peak during the first half of the 20th century, declining in popularity after World War II and following years of neglect. The area was revitalized with the opening of the MCU Park in 2001 and several amusement rides in the 2010s. Nathan's Famous, Inc. is an American company that operates a chain of fast food restaurants specializing in hot dogs. The original Nathan's restaurant stands at the corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues in the Coney Island neighborhood of the Brooklyn borough of New York City, New York. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBJ9RB - Coney Island is a peninsular residential neighborhood, beach, and leisure/entertainment destination of Long Island on the Coney Island Channel, which is part of the Lower Bay in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City.
The company's headquarters are at One Jericho Plaza in Jericho, New York, part of Oyster Bay, New York.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PBRY2N - The cultivation of the domesticated grape began 6,000?8,000 years ago in the Near East. Yeast, one of the earliest domesticated microorganisms, occurs naturally on the skins of grapes, leading to the discovery of alcoholic drinks such as wine. The earliest archeological evidence for a dominant position of wine-making in human culture dates from 8,000 years ago in Georgia. The oldest known winery was found in Armenia, dating to around 4000 BC.
By the 9th century AD the city of Shiraz was known to produce some of the finest wines in the Middle East. Thus it has been proposed that Syrah red wine is named after Shiraz, a city in Persia where the grape was used to make Shirazi wine. Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics record the cultivation of purple grapes, and history attests to the ancient Greeks, Phoenicians, and Romans growing purple grapes for both eating and wine production. The growing of grapes would later spread to other regions in Europe, as well as North Africa, and eventually in North America.
In North America, native grapes belonging to various species of the genus Vitis proliferate in the wild across the continent, and were a part of the diet of many Native Americans, but were considered by European colonists to be unsuitable for wine. Vitis vinifera cultivars were imported for that purpose.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P307ET - Altrincham Market House: Things To Do In Manchester - A Community Revitalised? Read more at https://manchesterbites.com/things-to-do-in-manchester-altrincham-market-house/
The revival of the Altrincham Market is nothing short of remarkable. From 1290 (yes, 1290!) the market had been at the centre of community life in Altrincham. Throughout the centuries, the market would have been where townsfolk gathered to buy goods, make a living, and spend time in the company of their neighbours.
And yet, the second half of the 20th century brought a period of stagnation. With the fortunes of the town on the downturn and the population size decreasing year over year, the historic market was being run by the council with little love or care. In fact, around a decade ago, Altrincham was voted as having the worse high street in Britain.
So, what has changed?
Well, Nick Johnson came onto the scene. Nick was a property developer and saw something in Altrincham that others failed to spot. In 2013, he won the contract to run the market and quickly set about changing the face of it and in turn Altrincham.
Nick gave the Victorian building a makeover. Cleaning it from top to bottom and restoring some features that had been neglected. He then got to work contacting some of the area's best, local food vendors.
Nick did the same in Manchester city centre with the Mackie Mayor food hall, the big sister of Altrincham Market House. We previously wrote about Mackie Mayor here.
Food And Drink At Altrincham Market House
Since it reopened in 2014, locals and visitors have filled the food hall week after week, and it should come as no surprise ? the food on offer is second to none!
Market House is home to 10 indie food stalls, including Honest Crust, Wolfhouse Kitchen, Tender Cow, Jack in the Box, Reserve Wines, Great North Pie Co., Sam Joseph, and Market House Coffee.
Jack in the Box is an award-winning producer of real ale and cider that operate across the Mackie Mayor and Altrincham

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PM6261 - St George's Market is the last surviving Victorian covered market in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It is located on May Street, close to the River Lagan and the Waterfront Hall. Belfast Corporation (now Belfast City Council) commissioned the building of St George's Market, which was built in three phases between 1890 and 1896. Before 1890 St George's Market was an open market and most likely contained a slaughterhouse and a meat market. Today it is a thriving market with 300 traders, crafters, musicians, and food vendors.
By the 1980s, St George's Market had developed into a general market and it became the last of Belfast's thriving Victorian markets. The market was pressured with increased maintenance costs and changes to hygiene regulations, among other issues, and Belfast City Council decided to source other uses for the listed building. A campaign backed by the city council, traders and the general public resulted in a Heritage Lottery Fund-backed ?3.5 million refurbishment programme assisted by the Environment and Heritage Agency. Brick and stonework that had badly deteriorated was returned to good condition, and special bricks were produced in England to match the original unusually sized bricks. The fully renovated St George's Market reopened its doors on 14 May 1999.
St George's Market is primarily used as a market, however a number of other events are held at the site. These range from food festivals, art initiatives, exhibitions, charity launches, fashion shoots and live music events. Local software company Northbrook Technology hold their annual Staff Christmas Party at the venue.
The market has won a number of recent awards, including being voted Best Large Indoor Market 2014 and as one of the UK's top five markets by the National Association of British Market Authorities in 2006, and winning third place in the best markets category of the Observer Food Monthly/Waitrose Awards in 2004

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HH1T5D - It sounds so simple and so trendy. The Eat-Clean Diet is a lifestyle way of eating that allows you to eat more, weigh less, and become the healthiest you can be, says Tosca Reno, author of The Eat-Clean Diet series.
Not only will you lose about 3 pounds a week, you will see dramatic changes in the way you look and feel, Reno says.
Reno says that eating clean encourages a lifestyle approach of exercise and a diet plan of unprocessed, whole foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and no artificial ingredients, preservatives, chemically charged foods, sugars, saturated fat, and trans fat.
That means tomatoes are in, ketchup is out. We live in a chemical soup experiment. Processed foods have undermined our health, especially sugars, which are deadly anti-foods that have no place in our body, Reno says.
Plans range from 1,200-1,800 calories, eaten in 5-6 small meals throughout the day -- designed to fire up the metabolism. Practicing portion control helps dieters avoid the dreaded calorie counting.
The Eat-Clean Diet is a beautiful book with lots of pictures of delicious-sounding recipes with nutrition information, glossy pictures, sample meal plans, grocery lists, and more to help dieters get excited about eating a healthy diet and engaging in more physical activity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDF0A0 - Murals in Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the region's past and present political and religious divisions.
Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. A mural therefore exists to express an idea or message and could generally be seen as reflecting values held dear to that community.
In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands
murals of international solidarity with revolutionary groups are equally common, as are those which highlight a particular issue, for example the Ballymurphy Massacre or the McGurk's Bar bombing. In working class unionist communities, murals are used to promote Ulster loyalist paramilitary groups such as the Ulster Defence Association and Ulster Volunteer Force and commemorate their deceased members. However traditional themes such as William III of England and the Battle of the Boyne, the Battle of the Somme and the 36th Ulster Division are equally common

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GY19WJ - Maize also known as corn, is a cereal grain first domesticated by indigenous peoples in southern Mexico about 10,000 years ago. The leafy stalk of the plant produces pollen inflorescences and separate ovuliferous inflorescences called ears that yield kernels or seeds, which are fruits.
Maize has become a staple food in many parts of the world, with the total production of maize surpassing that of wheat or rice. However, little of this maize is consumed directly by humans: most is used for corn ethanol, animal feed and other maize products, such as corn starch and corn syrup. The six major types of maize are dent corn, flint corn, pod corn, popcorn, flour corn, and sweet corn.
Maize is widely cultivated throughout the world, and a greater weight of maize is produced each year than any other grain. In 2014, total world production was 1.04 billion tonnes, led by the United States with 35% of the total. China produced 21% of the global total.
In 2016, maize (corn) production was forecast to be over 15 billion bushels, an increase of 11% over 2014 American production. Based on conditions as of August 2016, the expected yield would be the highest ever for the United States. The area of harvested maize was forecast to be 87 million acres, an increase of 7% over 2015. Maize is especially popular in Midwestern states such as Indiana and Illinois
in the latter, it was named the state's official grain in 2017

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GJBNNC - Chinatown in Manchester, England is an ethnic enclave in the city centre. It is the second largest Chinatown in the United Kingdom and the third largest in Europe. It has an archway on Faulkner Street which was completed in 1987 and contains many Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Nepali, Vietnamese, Singaporean and Malaysian restaurants, shops, bakeries and supermarkets.
The first settlers to arrive in the city came in the early 20th century
according to the BBC, Many arrived alone and were engaged in what was seen as the traditional trade of laundries. Manchester's first Chinese restaurant, Ping Hong, opened on Mosley Street in 1948, on the eve of a Chinese immigration wave that would commence during the 1950s. Manchester did not have a significant Chinese population, reaching only about 2,000. However, after World War II, there were severe labour shortages, and in response, the government passed the British Nationality Act 1948, which allowed easier access into the country. Additionally, Hong Kong's rapid urbanisation meant that many farmers and traditional residents' homes were being destroyed by the urban sprawl, so many decided to migrate.
The area's beginnings are rooted in the restaurant business, as many Chinese restaurants surfaced soon after the immigration boom. By the 1970s other Chinese businesses began to emerge, such as medicine shops, Chinese supermarkets, as well as financial and legal services, all serving the employees of the expanding number of Chinese restaurants in the area. There was even a Hong Kong government office and a branch of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation during the 1970s. In 1989 the Chinese Arts Centre opened in Chinatown. In 2013 the Bank of East Asia opted to open their first Manchester branch in Chinatown, situated on Charlotte Street. The branch officially opened on 25 October 2013, in a ceremony attended by the Lord Mayor of Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9ETJ - A mince pie is a small British fruit-based mincemeat sweet pie traditionally served during the Christmas season. Its ingredients are traceable to the 13th century, when returning European crusaders brought with them Middle Eastern recipes containing meats, fruits and spices.
The early mince pie was known by several names, including mutton pie, shrid pie and Christmas pie. Typically its ingredients were a mixture of minced meat, suet, a range of fruits, and spices such as cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Served around Christmas, the savoury Christmas pie (as it became known) was associated with supposed Catholic idolatry and during the English Civil War was frowned on by the Puritan authorities. Nevertheless, the tradition of eating Christmas pie in December continued through to the Victorian era, although by then its recipe had become sweeter and its size reduced markedly from the large oblong shape once observed. Today the mince pie remains a popular seasonal treat enjoyed by many across the United Kingdom.

minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally encased in the animal's stomach and simmered for approximately three hours.
Sometimes haggis is sold in tins (as in here), or a container which can simply be microwaved or oven-baked. Some supermarket haggis is largely made from pig, rather than sheep, offal.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCE78T - The present market, located on Southwark Street and Borough High Street just south of Southwark Cathedral on the southern end of London Bridge, is a successor to one that originally adjoined the end of London Bridge. It was first mentioned in 1276, although the market itself claims to have existed since 1014 and probably much earlier and was subsequently moved south of St Margaret's church on the High Street. The City of London received a royal charter from Edward VI in 1550 to control all markets in Southwark (see Guildable Manor), which was confirmed by Charles II in 1671. However, the market caused such traffic congestion that, in 1754, it was abolished by an Act of Parliament.
The Act allowed for the local parishioners to set up another market on a new site, and in 1756, it began again on a 4.5-acre (18,000 m2) site in Rochester Yard. During the 19th century, it became one of London's most important food markets due to its strategic position near the riverside wharves of the Pool of London.
The retail market operates Monday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The wholesale market operates on all weekday mornings from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m.
Three attackers from the 2017 London Bridge attack ran to the area, where they stabbed and killed people with knives before they were shot dead by armed police. The market was then closed for 11 days following the attack

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DBHR53 - North Staffordshire oatcake shop where the mixture is cooked on a traditional baxton iron griddle, then filled with bacon, cheese, mushroom, tomatoes etc and a splash of sauce.
A North Staffordshire oatcake is a type of pancake made from oatmeal, flour and yeast. It is cooked on a griddle or 'baxton'. The oatcake is a local speciality in the North Staffordshire area of England. They are normally referred to as Staffordshire oatcakes or possibly Potteries oatcakes by non-locals, because they were made in this area. In and around Staffordshire and Cheshire they are often simply known as oatcakes.
Derbyshire oatcakes are similar to Staffordshire oatcakes, but while following a similar (or even the same) recipe are generally larger in diameter, and thicker. For example the same recipe will make four Derbyshire or twelve Staffordshire style oatcakes.
It was once common throughout the Potteries for oatcakes to be sold directly from the window of a house to customers on the street. The last producer in this style closed on the 25th of March 2012
however, there are many small commercial premises who sell oatcakes. Larger commercial enterprises exist that sell oatcakes to supermarkets and other large distribution chains.
Oatcakes can be a form of fast food. Catering outlets in the area usually offer oatcakes with fillings such as cheese, tomato, onion, bacon, sausage, and egg.
They can also be eaten with sweet fillings such as golden syrup, jam or banana, but this is less common and frowned upon by traditionalists. They are traditionally re-heated by steaming between two plates over a saucepan of water or nowadays by microwave, though some may prefer frying in butter or grilling.

It is a 200-acre (81 ha) mixed-use property development site on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal in Salford and Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. The project is being developed by Peel Media, and its principal tenants are media organisations and the University of Salford. The land occupied by the development was part of the Port of Manchester and Manchester Docks.
The BBC signalled its intention to move jobs to Manchester in 2004, and the Salford Quays site was chosen in 2006. The Peel Group was granted planning permission to develop the site in 2007, and construction of the development, with its own energy generation plant and communications network, began the same year. Based in Quay House, the principal tenant is the BBC, whose move marks a large-scale decentralisation from London. BBC Children's, BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Research and BBC Sport are among the departments which have relocated to the development. ITV Granada completed the first phase of its move to MediaCityUK in March 2013. The Studios on Broadway house seven high-definition studios, claimed to be the largest such facility in Europe.

Its one of my favourite spices, ground on to most things I eat if needed or not. Also, a few slipped into boiling rice to go with a curry sauce.
Black pepper is a native plant of South India and is extensively grown there and elsewhere in tropical regions. The pink balls of the fresh fruit can be seen on the trees and when crushed in its raw state has a sweet pepper aroma. Green peppercorns are just the immature fruits.
Cochin in southern india is a major spice centre and it is easy to visit some of the spice warehouses etc. I remember when backpacking around Cochin there was the smell of pepper in the air and quite often you were crushing escapee peppercorns underfoot - marvellous.

It used to be Rank, then Granada, was Forton, then Lancaster, then Lancaster (Forton).
The tower is called 'The Pennine Tower', and when it opened it had a restaurant with a panoramic view. However, the tower fell short of the Health and Safety regulations for the number of emergency exits required in a public building, so it had to be closed. It's now only used for staff training and offices.
The tower is unique to the services, but Rank built slightly smaller versions at other services of theirs such as Hilton Park, which has suffered exactly the same fate. Although the one here is the 'daddy' (as they say).
In 2008 the services won a five star loo award, one more than in 2006. Worth sharing that with you, in case you might consider holding on until Knutsford.
Rumours that the cafe used to revolve inside like 'Piz Gloria' in Switzerland where the famous James Bond was filmed'on her Majesty's Secret Service are untrue. (apparently).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K69A4H - Gloucester Services are a pair of Motorway Service Areas (MSA) serving the northbound and southbound carriageways of the M5 between Junction 11A and Junction 12, near Whaddon, Gloucester. It specialises in selling artisanal food, and does not offer outlets for popular chain food brands.
Construction of the northbound services began in early 2013, and they officially opened on 7 May 2014. Construction of the southbound services commenced in March 2014 and they opened on 19 May 2015
In September 2009, the independent motorway services operator Westmorland Motorway Services Ltd, jointly with a local charitable trust, Gloucestershire Gateway Trust, submitted plans for a service area at Matson for public consultation. The plans were for a business operated in a similar manner to Tebay Services on the M6 in Cumbria, with much of the food and produce on sale being sourced from local suppliers
The operator promised not to host chain coffee shops, fast-food outlets, or video and gambling machines
The service area supports the Gloucestershire Gateway Trust in assisting the business to provide good jobs for more deprived areas of Gloucester, and to support local social regeneration schemes.
The 2019 Motorway Services User Survey found that Gloucester's southbound side was in the top five motorway services in the UK for customer satisfaction
The District Council was informed at the end of February 2011 that Roadchef and Welcome Break (the operators of Strensham and Michaelwood service stations) had applied to the High Court for a judicial review of the Council's decision to grant planning permission. Joined in the action were CAMSA and the Parish Councils of Brookthorpe-with-Whaddon and Harescombe. The case was heard in the High Court in Birmingham on 17 and 18 January 2012. By 8 February 2012, the High Court had dismissed all challenges to the planning application
One of the factors that helped the development gain planning permission was the inclusion of a green roof

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HF85 - A moody dusk street scene in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, showing a lone man walking along Rue Saint-Dominique past the Thoumieux restaurant at number 79. The restaurant's vertical red neon sign glows against the muted tones of the surrounding buildings, casting warm light onto the pavement and contrasting with the cool blue-grey sky above. The narrow street stretches toward the Eiffel Tower, which rises faintly in the distance and anchors the scene unmistakably within the Parisian cityscape.
The composition captures an everyday moment of Parisian life rather than a staged tourist view. Parked cars line the street, shopfronts are closed or dimly lit, and the pedestrian moves forward with purpose, suggesting routine, familiarity and solitude rather than spectacle. The lighting and perspective create a cinematic atmosphere, evoking themes of evening transition, urban rhythm and the quiet intervals between daytime activity and nightlife.
Rue Saint-Dominique runs through one of Paris's most established residential and dining districts, close to the Seine and the Champ de Mars. The presence of the Thoumieux restaurant, a long-standing name in Parisian gastronomy, reinforces associations with food culture, local neighbourhood life and understated elegance. The red neon signage adds a distinctly European visual language, recalling mid-twentieth-century caf?? and brasserie traditions.
This image is well suited for editorial use covering Parisian life, French culture, travel and tourism, urban solitude and everyday street scenes, as well as commercial applications requiring atmospheric imagery of Paris at dusk, European city living, gastronomy districts and cinematic urban environments.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEY9FD - Norton Canes services is a motorway service station on the M6 Toll, in the village of Norton Canes near the towns of Brownhills, Cannock, and Walsall, in Staffordshire, England. It is operated by RoadChef, who has a 25-year lease on the site. The company also uses the site as its head office
Norton Canes services is located on the M6 Toll between junctions T6 and T7, and is positioned so that it can be accessed before reaching the main toll plaza in either direction. It is a single-sided site, unlike a large majority of other service areas which have separate facilities for each direction. For this reason it is possible to do a U-turn at the services
however, it is not possible to avoid the toll in that way.
Unlike most other service areas, where it is illegal for traffic from local roads to use the back entrance to the site, provision has been made at Norton Canes for traffic from the A5 to access the services

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEMX26 - A traditional British windmill rises above a field of ripe golden wheat at the height of summer harvest time, photographed in the English countryside under a clear blue sky. The white tower mill, with its sails fully extended, stands as a strong symbol of rural heritage and historic food production, contrasting with the dense, sunlit heads of wheat in the foreground. The scene captures the peak of the agricultural season, when cereal crops reach maturity and the landscape takes on its distinctive warm, amber tones.
Windmills such as this once played a vital role in rural communities, harnessing natural wind power to grind grain into flour and supporting local farming economies long before modern industrial milling. Today they remain enduring landmarks within the British countryside, representing craftsmanship, sustainability, and the long relationship between agriculture, energy, and food supply. The wheat field emphasises themes of arable farming, seasonal labour, and the cycles of planting and harvest that still define much of rural England.
The image conveys a strong sense of place and season, combining traditional architecture with working farmland at a moment of abundance. It is well suited for editorial use covering agriculture, rural life, British heritage, food production, sustainability, and seasonal change, as well as commercial applications requiring classic countryside imagery associated with farming, harvest, and the English rural landscape.
