Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RW3WXN - The Two Voices is a poem written by future Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom Alfred, Lord Tennyson between 1833 and 1834. It was included in his 1842 collection of Poems. Tennyson wrote the poem, titled Thoughts of a Suicide in manuscript, after the death of his friend Arthur Henry Hallam in 1833. The poem was autobiographical.
Tennyson explained, When I wrote 'The Two Voices' I was so utterly miserable, a burden to myself and to my family, that I said, 'Is life worth anything?' (Hill, 54). In the poem, one voice urges the other to suicide (There is one remedy for all repeated on lines 201 and 237)
the poet's arguments against it range from vanity to desperation, yet the voice discredits all. The poem's ending delivers no conclusions, and has been widely criticized[according to whom?]”the poet finds no internal affirmation, invoking solace outside himself (Tucker). The Two Voices was published following a ten-year span (1832-1842) in which Tennyson did not publish anything, coinciding with what some call one of the deafening silences of Victorian literary history

The Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell and the Bishop of Leeds, Nick Baines will be at Ripon Cathedral on October 16 for the culmination of the cathedral's 1350th anniversary celebrations.
A ledger stone, honouring the cathedral's founding father St Wilfrid, will be dedicated by Archbishop Stephen at the end of a service that will have celebrated the incredible life and mission of St Wilfrid of Ripon.
Throughout this year, in marking the 1350th anniversary of the dedication of Ripon's crypt by St Wilfrid, the cathedral community has been telling the story of this remarkable missionary bishop with art installations, son et lumieres, lectures and worship.
Wilfrid, a man of great vision, motivation, courage and faith, not only built up the church and brought countless people to faith but also helped the church on the fringes of Europe become more up to date and better connected. This became symbolized in the way he brought Roman influence to bear on the building of a stunning church in Ripon.
The ledger stone has been laid under the central tower, above the crypt dedicated by St. Wilfrid in 672AD and somewhere near where our founding saint was buried. The crypt is the oldest built fabric of any English cathedral.
The stone has been created by letter carver Charlotte Howarth from Making Marks in Norfolk, who worked round the clock for four weeks to complete the work on time. Charlotte's previous projects include the carving of the gilt lettering into the oak for the Remember Me memorial portico entrance at St Paul's Cathedral, dedicated to those who died as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Carving the ledger stone for Ripon Cathedral was highly skilled and physically demanding work, using an extremely hard stone called Stanhoe Framp. Charlotte said: You become emotionally involved with a project when you work on it.

Born in Hampstead, London, Scott was one of six children and the third son of George Gilbert Scott Jr. and his wife, Ellen King Samson. His father was an architect who had co-founded the architecture and interior design company Watts & Co. in 1874. His paternal grandfather was Sir (George) Gilbert Scott, a more famous architect, known for designing the Albert Memorial and the Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras Station
In 1901, while Scott was still a pupil in Moore's practice, the diocese of Liverpool announced a competition to select the architect of a new cathedral. Two well-known architects were appointed as assessors for an open competition for architects wishing to be considered. G. F. Bodley was a leading exponent of the Gothic revival style, and a former pupil and relative by marriage of Scott's grandfather
In 1903, the assessors recommended that Scott should be appointed. There was widespread comment at the nomination of a 22-year-old with no existing buildings to his credit.
In 1910 Scott realised that he was not happy with the main design, which looked like a traditional Gothic cathedral in the style of the previous century. He persuaded the cathedral committee to let him start all over again (a difficult decision, as some of the stonework had already been erected) and redesigned it as a simpler and more symmetrical building with a single massive central tower instead of the original proposal for twin towers. Scott's new plans provided more interior space. At the same time Scott modified the decorative style, losing much of the Gothic detailing and introducing a more modern, monumental style

Robert Clare Baxter was born into a poor family in Runcorn and started off working in a drapers at the weekend. He was later promoted to buyer and manager and the owner then helped him set up his own business.
In the early 20th century Clare's premises were occupied by Arthurs Pioneer Stores. Arthurs was taken over by WS Williams of Llanrwst who also owned the Loyal Store on the opposite side of Mostyn St. One of the shops 'main features was the variety of serge's and tweeds spun at Williams own factory in Dolgellau. These could be made up into whatever the customer required “ particulary boating, cycling and touring outfits for the ladies.
Clare's Department Store was established in 1927 by the Baxter family. Quickly built a reputation within the community for offering good, friendly reliable service to all their customers. Robert Clare Baxter rebuilt it as the present Clare's Department Store. It became a ladies dressmakers and milliners allowing customers to have access to a respectable fashion store.
When Robert Baxter died, the business was taken over by his son Dougie and grandchildren John and Ann. The business was passed down and continued to operate as a family business. It remained successful and was continually growing and thriving.
Clare's Department Store was acquired by Ulster Stores in 2002. It was instantly recognised as an exciting opportunity for the future. The store is a well known destination not only for local shoppers but also for the many tourists who visit Llandudno. When Ulster Stores took over the Lamson Pneumatic Device was removed. This whizzed payment by tubes to the cash office and sent back the change. You can still see the original office windows at the back of the GF.
Clares has changed over the years and moved with the times and customers.

In May 1974 the Central Arcade was destroyed by a severe fire that reduced it to rubble, which was declared unsafe and was subsequently demolished. The area was later rebuilt as the entrance to the centre
The centre was refurbished in 1987, when it was described as a covered pedestrianised shopping complex at the centre of the principal shopping area of Wolverhampton with more than 150 shops.
In 2003 the centre embarked on a further multi-million pound refurbishment programme. It was an opportunity to complete the enclosure of the centre to make it fully climate controlled. The marble floor in the entire centre was replaced along with the relocation of the escalators and stairways. The biggest change was the creation of the large New Look store which took over numerous stores.
Throughout 2016 and 2017, the centre was refurbished and configured as part of the £25 million investment, and a series of new larger stores was created, forcing some stores to close down and relocate within the centre. WH Smith and Tesco were closed, and Superdrug relocated. The reconfiguration was also to include new escalators and lifts, the removal of the Lower Central Arcade and the relocation of the toilets.
On 18 November 2016 H&M was the first major store to open as part of the shopping centre's multimillion-pound redevelopment.

The name also applies to the area surrounding its junction with Smithdown Road and Allerton Road, and to the roundabout at Smithdown Place that was the location for a major bus terminus, originally an important tram junction of Liverpool Corporation Tramways. The roundabout was a frequent stopping place for John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison during their years as schoolchildren and students. Bus journeys via Penny Lane and the area itself subsequently became familiar elements in the early years of the Lennon“McCartney songwriting partnership. In 2009, McCartney reflected:
Penny Lane was kind of nostalgic, but it was really [about] a place that John and I knew ... I'd get a bus to his house and I'd have to change at Penny Lane, or the same with him to me, so we often hung out at that terminus, like a roundabout. It was a place that we both knew, and so we both knew the things that turned up in the story.
Lennon's original lyrics for In My Life had included a reference to Penny Lane. Soon after the Beatles recorded In My Life in October 1965, McCartney mentioned to an interviewer that he wanted to write a song about Penny Lane. A year later, he was spurred to write the song once presented with Lennon's Strawberry Fields Forever. McCartney also cited Dylan Thomas's nostalgic poem Fern Hill as an inspiration for Penny Lane. Lennon co-wrote the lyrics with McCartney. He recalled in a 1970 interview: The bank was there, and that was where the trams sheds were and people waiting and the inspector stood there, the fire engines were down there. He started as a peddler, then set up as a general outfitter in Chesterfield in 1903 selling readymade suits bought from a wholesaler.[2][3] Following his marriage to Sophie Marks in 1909 the name of the company was changed from M. Burton to Burton & Burton. On the birth of twin boys in (1917) he gave his name as Montague Maurice Burton.
He died while speaking after a dinner in Leeds on 21 September 1952. The funeral was at the Harrogate Synagogue (some sources say Chapeltown) and he was interred at Gildersome.
˜The Tailor of Taste'
When Montague Burton became a limited company in 1917, it was registered as ˜Montague Burton the Tailor of Taste Ltd'. The slogan, as part of Burton's name, formed part of firm's logo, appearing on fascias, parapets, floors, and even on ventilation grilles.
Tiles and Mosaics
The entrance lobbies of many Burton shops had mosaic floors in the early-to-mid 20th century, and Burton was no exception. These sometimes included the popular Burton slogan: ˜Let Burton Dress You'. This also appears in a black and red glazed terracotta panel on the side elevation of the branch in Abergavenny (1937). Burton's terracotta was usually supplied by the Middleton Fireclay Co. of Leeds

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAEJ10 - The City Chambers or Municipal Buildings in Glasgow, Scotland, has functioned as the headquarters of Glasgow City Council since 1996, and of preceding forms of municipal government in the city since 1889, located on the eastern side of the city's George Square. An eminent example of Victorian civic architecture, the building was constructed between 1882 and 1888 to a competition winning design by Scottish architect William Young. a native of Paisley.
The entrance hall of the Chambers displays a mosaic of the city's coat of arms on the floor. The arms reflect legends about Glasgow's patron saint, Saint Mungo, and include four emblems “ the bird, tree, bell, and fish “ as remembered in the following verse:

Inaugurated in August 1888 by Queen Victoria, the first council meeting was held within the chambers in October 1889. The building originally had an area of 5,016 m2 (53,990 sq ft). In 1923, an extension to the east side of the building in John Street was opened and in 1984 Exchange House in George Street was completed, increasing the size of the City Chambers complex to some 14,000 m2
Need for a new city chambers had been apparent since the 18th century, with the old Tolbooth at Glasgow Cross becoming insufficient for the purposes of civic government in a growing town with greater political responsibilities. In 1814, the Tolbooth was sold “ with the exception of the steeple, which still remains “ and the council chambers moved to Jail Square in the Saltmarket, near Glasgow Green.

City Arcade was design by T.W.F Newton and Cheattle whom also designed numerous other building through Birmingham such as Fighting Cocks in Moseley, 143 Edmund Street, 41 Church Street and 56-60 Newhall Street. Sadly T.W.F Newton passed away at 40 years old.
It was built in 1898 originally it was two separate building the one that currently stands today and the grander one that intersected with the Midland Arcade which was sadly destroy on the 9th and 10th April 1941 during two heavy raids during WWII.
The remaining part of City Arcade closed in 1961 as part of a redevelopment plan for the city, the plans did not materialise and the arcade was boarded up and became an eyesore and full of rubbish and was threaded with the prospect of demolition. In 1972 the arcade was given a whole new lease of life and received £80,000 investment by Ravenseft Properties Ltd and work was overseen by Cotton, Ballard and Blow.

History
The company was established by Lord Harris of Peckham in 1988 when he opened its first shop in Canning Town. It was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in June 1993. In 1999, the company expanded through the acquisition of selected shops from Carpetland and Allied Carpets. It acquired its first operations in Continental Europe in 2002, and in 2005 acquired May's World of Carpets. In 2007, it added the Storey Carpets business, a firm based in Sunderland, which had 54 stores at the time.
Cascade Investment, LLC, the investment vehicle of Bill Gates, acquired a 3% in the company in May 2008. Carpetright expanded again with the purchase of Sleepright UK in 2008. However, in June 2011 it announced significant shop closure plans and that year posted its first loss since 1993.
It was reported on 21 March 2018 that Carpetright was struggling after issuing several profit warnings, and that it was looking at possible shop closures. On 12 April 2018, it was announced that Carpetright would close 92 stores, with a total loss of 300 jobs out of the total workforce of 2,700, as part of restructuring measures
In May 2018, Carpetright secured a £15 million loan to provide short-term working capital. In November 2019, Carpetright announced that its largest shareholder, Meditor, had agreed to purchase the company. A bid of £15.2 million was accepted by the company, amid fears it could not pay off its debt. Carpetright have estimated that the company would need around £80 million to get out of its debt problems. The company's gross debt was evaluated at £56 million
Carpetright announced the departure of chairman Bob Ivell in January 2020, as the store returned to private ownership after more than 26 years. Several non-executive directors stood down from the board because of the takeover

O'Meara served almost a decade at the Temple Bar Pub before he sold out to James Farley, Grocer and Spirit Merchant in 1844. James Farley knew the business here very well, having made but a short journey from 38 East Essex Street where he had operated as a Provisions dealer. James Farley's reign at this old hostelery was of brief duration.
The Great Famine was raging across the country with unprecedented horror and devastation when William Cranston, a much respected Dublin publican, took the wheel in 1847.
During the middle to late 1850s, a new wave of Provisions, Dealers and Dram Grocers had infiltrated the Temple Bar area. They operated the practise of ˜dram-drinking'. The Dram Grocers allowed customers to buy spirits in an off-sales liquor store capacity and illegally consume them on the premises behind screens and makeshift partitions. This practice created much financial hardship for the authorities and regular or legitimate vintners (wine merchants).
William Cranston was a member of the License Trade delegation who traveled to lobby the British Parliament in Westminster, London, in 1863 to have this practice forbidden

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG39NX - Early in his career, in 1896, Mackintosh met Catherine Cranston (widely known as Kate Cranston or simply Miss Cranston), an entrepreneurial local business woman who was the daughter of a Glasgow tea merchant and a strong believer in temperance.
The temperance movement was becoming increasingly popular in Glasgow at the turn of the century and Miss Cranston had conceived the idea of a series of art tearooms, venues where people could meet to relax and enjoy non-alcoholic refreshments in a variety of different rooms within the same building. This proved to be the start of a long working relationship between Miss Cranston and Mackintosh. Between 1896 and 1917 he designed and re-styled interiors in all four of her Glasgow tearooms, often in collaboration with his wife Margaret MacDonald.
Mackintosh's redesigned external facade was a carefully considered asymmetric, abstractly modelled composition with shallow curves on some areas of the surface, and varying depths of recesses to windows and the main entrance. The composition respected the urban context of the neighbouring buildings, matching the major cornice lines and heights of adjoining buildings, whilst still exploring emerging ideas of Art Nouveau and the modern movement.
The ground floor entrance door is placed far to the left of a wide band of fenestration, both of which are recessed below the first-floor level, the location of the Room de Luxe. To emphasise the importance of this room, Mackintosh designed a full width bay window, projecting the facade outwards with a gentle curve. The two storeys above this featured a more regular pattern of fenestration with three individual windows per floor, recessed to different degrees. The asymmetry of the composition was continued by widening the left side windows and creating another gentle curve in this part of the facade, extending through both storeys. This repeated the curved form of the first floor and emphasised the heavily recessed entrance to the building

The Missionaries of Charity in Liverpool offer hospitality to the homeless community. Volunteers assist the work of the Missionaries of Charity in giving out food. After the clients finish their food they often have another cup of tea and a cake and then start to disperse. The volunteers then wash up the dishes, sweep and mop the floor and clean the tables. Some volunteers go around the dining-room and pour out tea for people. On occasion a client may be drunk and become somewhat agitated
on these occasions the nuns step in and sort out the situation. Whilst it can be quite daunting going into the Missionaries of Charity ˜soup-kitchen' at first, volunteers often say they become more confident as the weeks go on, and look forward to returning week after week.

White snowdrops always for me indicate the shadow of winter, morphing into spring.
Screaming Trees are the best grunge band you have never heard of. The band was formed in Ellensburg, Washington USA (located about 100 miles from Seattle) in 1985 by vocalist Mark Lanegan, guitarist Gary Lee Conner &
bass player Van Conner. Their peers included Soundgarden.
In 1990 the band had signed a major-label contract with Epic Records and in 1991, the band released their fifth album, Uncle Anesthesia. The album was produced by Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell and included the single 'Bed of Roses', which gained considerable airtime on alternative rock radio stations and peaked at no 23 on the modern rock tracks. The single was the first Screaming Trees release to chart.
Although Uncle Anesthesia sold better than their previous efforts, the band remained a cult act. In 2000 after a concert to celebrate the opening of Seattle's Experience Music Project, the band announced their official breakup.
Lanegan released a solo album in May 2001 entitled Field Songs. Also in that year, he became a member of the hard rock group Queens of the Stone Age with Josh Homme. Lanegan recorded two albums as one of the group's three vocalists before leaving the QOTSA in late 2005.
Uncle Anesthesia (1991) or Sweet Oblivion (1992) are probably the best introductions to the group.

From the Greek, g\u00e1la 'milk', \u00e1nthos 'flower', Galanthus or Snowdrops is a small genus of about 20 species of bulbous herbaceous plants in the Amaryllis family. Most flower in winter, before the vernal equinox (21 March in the Northern Hemisphere), but certain species flower in early spring and late autumn.
Snowdrops are sometimes confused with their relatives, snowflakes, which are Leucojum and Acis species. Galanthus nivalis is the best-known and most widespread representative of the genus Galanthus. It is native to a large area of Europe, stretching from the Pyrenees in the west, through France and Germany to Poland in the north, Italy, Northern Greece, Ukraine, and European Turkey. It has been introduced and is widely naturalised elsewhere.
Although it is often thought of as a British native wild flower, or to have been brought to the British Isles by the Romans, it was probably introduced around the early sixteenth century and is currently not a protected species in the UK. In most countries it is now illegal to collect bulbs from the wild.
All species of Galanthus are perennial, herbaceous plants which grow from bulbs. Each bulb generally produces just two or three linear leaves and an erect, leafless scape (flowering stalk), which bears at the top a pair of bract-like spathe valves joined by a papery membrane. From between them emerges a solitary, pendulous, bell-shaped white flower, held on a slender pedicel.
The flower has no petals: it consists of six tepals, the outer three being larger and more convex than the inner series. The six anthers open by pores or short slits. The ovary is three-celled, ripening into a three-celled capsule. Each whitish seed has a small, fleshy tail (elaiosome) containing substances attractive to ants which distribute the seeds. The leaves die back a few weeks after the flowers have faded.
So such a short appearance, but the true precursor to spring (thank goodness!).

This is one of my favourite tracks, although I must admit I have only recently started to appreciate the Northern Soul tracks of my local 70's 'terroir'. I have liked this one for decades. as it was one that Joy Division were asked to record by RCA back in 1978. The central riff they appropriated for some later compositions, notably Interzone.
This is a great uplifting track about not letting life get you down. A great track when you are low.
Nolan Porter or NF Porter has been covered quite a lot and many 70's soul compilations contain his 7' cuts. However, there is little info about him seeming to be found on the web. If you know more, please leave a comment.

The Wigan Casino was a nightclub in Wigan, Lancashire, England. Operating between 1973 and 1981, it was known as a primary venue for northern soul music. It carried forward the legacy created by clubs such as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester and the Golden Torch in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent. It remains one of the most famous clubs in Northern England.
This England, a TV documentary about the venue, was filmed in 1977 during a famous 'All Nighter'. Dancers were fuelled by Lucozade and speed. In 1978, the American music magazine Billboard voted Wigan Casino 'The Best Disco in the World', ahead of New York City's Studio 54.

The ear is a spike, consisting of a central stem on which grows tightly packed rows of flowers. These develop into fruits containing the edible seeds. In corn, it is protected by leaves called husks.
In some species (including wheat), unripe ears contribute significantly to photosynthesis, in addition to the leaves lower down the plant.
A parasite known as Anguina tritici (Ear Cockle) specifically affects the ears on wheat and rye by destroying the tissues and stems during growth. With exception to North Africa and West Asia, the parasite has been eradicated in all countries by using the crop rotation system

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4467457083 - 'Ah, a chance to enjoy a quiet pint in pedestrianised Covent Garden and watch the street entertainment (without getting hassled for cash). That might pay for another bag of chilli nuts then.
It is a nice part of 'old London', it was the site of a flower, fruit and vegetable market from the 1500s until 1974. The wholesale market was then relocated to New Covent Garden Market in Nine Elms (not so picturesque). While Covent Garden is the only part of London licensed for street entertainment, performers have to jump through hoops, having to undertake auditions for the Market's management and representatives of the performers' union and signing up to timetabled slots.
It was nice on a quite mild March afternoon to enjoy my pint of Fullers London Pride overlooking the main piazza. This image has been turned to monochrome then selectively coloured.

It associates with various deciduous and coniferous trees. The quintessential toadstool, it is a large white-gilled, white-spotted, usually deep red mushroom, one of the most recognizable and widely encountered in popular culture. Several subspecies, with differing cap colour, have been recognised to date, including the brown regalis (considered a separate species), the yellow-orange flavivolvata, guessowii, and formosa, and the pinkish persicina. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEMWP7 - The common spangle gall wasp is a tiny wasp, Neuropterus quercusbaccarum, that causes a growth, or 'gall', on the underside of oak leaves in early autumn. It is common and widespread, and a single leaf can host up to 100 galls, each containing a single larva. The galls fall to the ground and can be seen around oak trees during autumn. The larvae continue to develop through the winter, and emerge as adults in April.
How to identify
The common spangle gall wasp produces a brown, disc-shaped gall on the undersides of oak leaves. You are more likely to see the galls than the adult gall wasps or the grubs. However, there are several similar, disc-shaped galls that grow on oak trees.

The earliest reference to the worshipping community at Great Budworth appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 where we are told of the presence of a priest and so can infer a worshipping community and probably a church building. Of these early days we can only catch glimpses through the mists of time but one point is clear, the Pre-Reformation history of the church is dominated by the Augustinian Canons of Norton Priory, Runcorn. The Canons were given the church and living of Great Budworth in 1130 by William Fitz Nigel, Constable of Chester. Later they received the gift of a third of all the land in the township of Great Budworth from Geoffrey De Dutton, to add to the already substantial holdings of land they had been given by local people, keen to save their souls and those of their loved ones by endowing the Canons in return for burials and perpetual prayers, a common practice in the middle ages. The Canons created the present church and dominated both the religious and economic life of the township. The oldest part of the church, the Lady Chapel, dates from the fourteenth century and most of the rest from the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries showing that the Canons were very active in keeping the church not only in a good state of preservation, but also in continuing to beautify and modernise it. With the Reformation of the sixteenth century, the highly decorated church of the Augustinian Canons was transformed, and by 1600 it had become a white-washed preaching hall from which a. series of Puritan ministers would, throughout the seventeenth century, preach the Gospel and convert the parish from a religious conservatism to a radical Protestantism.

The cathedral's official name is The Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St Mary, St Denys and St George in Manchester. Although extensively refaced, restored and extended in the Victorian period, and then again following severe bomb damage in the 20th century, the main body of the Cathedral largely derives from the wardenship of James Stanley (warden 1485“1506), and is in the Perpendicular Gothic style. Stanley was also primarily responsible for commissioning the spectacular late medieval wooden furnishings, including the pulpitum, the choir stalls, and the nave roof supported by angels with gilded instruments. It is one of the Grade I listed buildings in Manchester. Since 2005 the Dean of the Cathedral has been the Very Reverend Rogers Morgan Govender.
The Cathedral has thirty 16th-century misericords, considered to be amongst the finest in Europe. It is worth noting that the misericords have a stylistic similarity to those at Ripon Cathedral and Beverley Minster “ and although Manchester's post date-these, they were probably carved by the same school at Ripon. One of the most notable is N-08, which is the earliest known mention of backgammon in the UK. The early 16th century also saw the construction of an almost complete sequence of chantry chapels for local guilds along both north and south sides of the church
in effect creating a double aisle around the parochial nave, which is consequently much wider than it is long. Indeed Manchester is commonly claimed to have the widest nave of any cathedral in England. James Stanley is also responsible for the embellishment of the nave roof with supporters in the form of fourteen life-size angel minstrels, each playing a different late medieval instrument.
