Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EE4M92 - EasyJet boarding and cabin bag sizer sign at a departure gate inside Catania-Fontanarossa Airport in Sicily, showing separate directions for Speedy Boarding and all other customers, plus illustrated cabin bag size rules. The orange gate sign highlights the practical reality of low-cost air travel, where cheap headline fares are often accompanied by strict baggage limits, paid priority boarding options and potential charges if a cabin bag is too large for the airline gauge. EasyJet's current cabin bag guidance says every passenger may bring one small under-seat bag free of charge, with maximum dimensions of 45 x 36 x 20 cm including handles and wheels, while larger cabin bags are generally linked to paid options such as Speedy Boarding, selected fares, extra legroom or upfront seats. This image can illustrate budget airline business models, ancillary revenue, cabin bag restrictions, passenger frustration, boarding gate checks, airport retail-style pricing, consumer rights, travel costs and the irritation caused by oversize cabin luggage fees. The photograph also works for stories about European air travel, Sicily tourism, Catania departures, family holidays, airline rules, airport queues, boarding procedures and the difference between basic fares and enhanced fare bundles. The setting appears to be an indoor airport gate area, with fluorescent ceiling lighting, queue barriers, seated passengers and a quiet pre-boarding atmosphere. The sign's clear split between Speedy Boarding and other passengers gives useful visual context for articles about priority boarding, airline segmentation and the way budget carriers manage limited overhead locker space. The tone should be factual and editorial: the image records passenger-facing baggage control systems and perceived punitive charging practices, but the specific fee or enforcement outcome for any individual passenger is not shown.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EE4M94 - Passengers waiting beside baggage reclaim carousel 3 inside Manchester Airport Terminal 2, with luggage belts, airport signage, backpacks and travel bags visible in the arrivals area. The image shows a familiar post-flight scene of travellers standing around the carousel, watching for checked baggage and waiting for suitcases to appear after arrival. The photograph can illustrate delayed luggage, lost baggage, mishandled baggage, airport customer service, baggage handling failures, travel disruption and the everyday frustration of air passengers when bags do not arrive promptly. Manchester Airport is one of the UK's major international airports, serving the North West of England, with Terminal 2 forming a key part of its modernised passenger facilities. Baggage reclaim is a critical point in the passenger journey, coming after passport control and before onward travel, hotel transfers, rail connections, taxis, car parks and family pick-ups. This documentary airport image is useful for editorial coverage of aviation operations, consumer rights, airline complaints, holiday travel, summer travel pressure, tourism, airport queues, ground handling, travel insurance claims and the practical impact of delayed or missing checked baggage. The scene has a muted indoor airport lighting feel, with travellers in casual clothing and rucksacks gathered around the carousel, suggesting holidaymakers or returning passengers waiting with mixed patience and uncertainty. It can also support stories about airport staffing, baggage system performance, passenger experience, travel stress, flight delays and the wider reliability of air travel infrastructure. The visible numbered reclaim areas and warning signage give the image clear context as a UK airport arrivals and baggage hall scene, rather than a generic travel photograph.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ECEEHC - An easyJet Airbus A320 family aircraft stands on the apron at Manchester Airport while ground staff refuel the jet during turnaround operations at the gate. Baggage equipment, service vehicles, a jet bridge and the open fuel connection are all visible, making this a strong editorial image of airport ground handling, aircraft servicing and the routine but critical process of preparing short-haul flights for departure. The picture is commercially useful for stories about aviation fuel, airport operations, airline resilience, delays and the pressure on carriers when fuel supply, logistics or wider energy markets become uncertain. It also works well as a concept image for possible jet fuel shortages, cancelled or delayed UK and EU flights, and the knock-on effect disruption can have on passengers, schedules and airport efficiency. easyJet says it operates an all-Airbus fleet, including A320 family aircraft, and Manchester Airport is one of its major UK bases, so the scene is closely tied to everyday British and European short-haul travel. The visible refuelling activity gives extra value for features about kerosene demand, fuel costs, decarbonisation, sustainable aviation fuel, operational turnaround times and the vulnerability of aviation to external shocks. Care should be taken not to imply that this specific aircraft was affected by any actual shortage or cancellation event, because the image simply shows normal apron servicing. Even so, it is a useful documentary illustration of how every departing flight depends on reliable fuel availability, skilled ground crews and efficient airport infrastructure. The image can support reporting on airline operations, airport congestion, energy security, flight cancellations, European travel disruption, summer holiday travel and the wider economics of commercial aviation. Other aircraft parked in the background reinforce the sense of a busy working airfield and a live airport environment.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2REGJ48 - This image shows the exterior of a Barrhead Travel branch located at 31 Leicester Street in Northwich town centre, Cheshire. The travel agency occupies a modern glass-fronted retail unit, with prominent white Barrhead Travel signage mounted across the facade, clearly identifying the business.
The photograph appears to have been taken in late-day or early evening light, with warm reflections visible in the glass frontage and surrounding paving. The clean architectural lines and contemporary materials reflect recent high-street retail design, contrasting with older town-centre buildings visible through reflections.
Barrhead Travel is a major UK travel retailer, offering holiday packages, cruises, flights, and travel services to consumers. Physical branches such as this remain an important part of the travel sector, providing face-to-face advice and booking services alongside online platforms.
The image documents everyday commercial life on a UK high street, capturing the presence of national retail brands within regional town centres and the continuing role of travel agencies in the tourism and leisure economy.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PY19E4 - Manchester Airport (IATA: MAN, ICAO: EGCC) is an international airport in Ringway, Manchester, England, 7.5 nautical miles (13.9 km
8.6 mi) south-west of Manchester city centre. In 2019, it was the third busiest airport in the United Kingdom in terms of passenger numbers and the busiest of those not serving London. The airport comprises three passenger terminals and a cargo terminal. It covers an area of 560 hectares (1,400 acres) and has flights to 199 destinations, placing the airport thirteenth globally for total destinations served
Officially opened on 25 June 1938, it was initially known as Ringway Airport, a name still in local use. In World War II, as RAF Ringway, it was a base for the Royal Air Force. The airport is owned and managed by the Manchester Airport Holdings (trading as MAG), a holding company owned by the Australian finance house IFM Investors and the ten metropolitan borough councils of Greater Manchester, with Manchester City Council owning the largest stake. Ringway, after which the airport was named, is a village with a few buildings and a church at the western edge of the airport.
After the airport handled a record 27.8 million passengers in 2017, it underwent major expansion to double the size of Terminal 2, the first elements opening in 2019. The £1 billion expansion will be completed in 2024 and enable Terminal 2 to handle 35 million passengers. Capacity exists for up to 50 million passengers annually with two runways
[10] however, this potential figure is limited by the airport's restriction to 61 aircraft movements per hour as well as existing terminal sizes to process arrivals and departures effectively.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R0MMD8 - A Jet2 aircraft is parked on a UK airport apron at dusk, with mobile stairs, apron markings and ground service equipment visible around the aircraft. The image works well as an editorial concept for possible jet fuel shortages, reduced fuel supplies, rising aviation fuel prices and the risk of higher air fares for UK and EU travellers during the summer holiday season. It is especially relevant to news and feature coverage linked to the continuing Middle East conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel, and the wider threat to oil and refined-product flows through the Strait of Hormuz. The International Energy Agency said in April 2026 that attacks on energy infrastructure in the Middle East and restrictions to tanker movements through Hormuz had led to the largest oil supply disruption in history, tightening product markets and pushing up prices. IATA's Jet Fuel Price Monitor says the global average jet fuel price rose to 181.22 US dollars per barrel last week, while IATA also notes that fuel is one of the largest airline operating costs, commonly accounting for around 25 to 30 per cent of total operating expenses. That makes the photograph commercially useful for stories about airline resilience, fuel hedging, flight cancellations, route cuts, aviation energy security, passenger disruption, holiday travel, package holidays and the vulnerability of European air travel to external energy shocks. Jet2 says it is the UK's third largest airline, adding relevance for stories about mainstream leisure aviation and consumer travel costs. The image should not imply that this specific Jet2 flight had been cancelled, delayed or left short of fuel, because it simply shows a normal aircraft on stand. However, it is a strong documentary illustration of the wider economic pressure on airlines when fuel becomes harder to source or substantially more expensive, creating the potential for higher fares, operational changes and pressure on lower-margin routes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PYBHDA - Passengers disembark from a Jet2 aircraft on an airport apron at dusk, using mobile stairs in warm evening light after landing. The panoramic image shows travellers leaving the front door of the aircraft, stepping down onto the apron with hand luggage and bags, while another set of mobile stairs is positioned towards the rear. The low evening sun, blue sky, orange horizon, apron markings and open airfield setting make this a strong editorial travel photograph for stories about arrivals, holiday flights, package travel, short-haul aviation, airport operations and passenger handling. The scene captures the practical moment after landing when passengers leave the aircraft away from a jet bridge and move towards the terminal or onward transfer arrangements. The visible Jet2 branding, aircraft stairs, cabin door, passengers, luggage and ground markings give the image clear context for UK and European leisure travel, airport turnaround procedures and the everyday rhythm of budget and holiday airline operations. It is commercially useful for articles on evening arrivals, summer holidays, airport capacity, regional airports, passenger experience, travel disruption, airline punctuality, package holidays, tourism and the changing economics of air travel. The wide panoramic crop adds scale and atmosphere, showing both the aircraft and the surrounding apron rather than a tight close-up of passengers. The picture can also support broader features on aviation emissions, sustainable aviation, low-cost travel, airside safety, ground crew coordination and the pressure on airlines to turn aircraft round efficiently. Care should be taken not to imply boarding, delay or any incident unless supported by separate information, because the visible action is routine passenger disembarkation after arrival. As a documentary stock image, it records a familiar but visually appealing end-of-flight moment, with passengers stepping from aircraft to apron under a calm dusk sky.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RKGHK3 - Lufthansa operate up to four return flights daily between Manchester and Franfurt
Deutsche Lufthansa AG commonly shortened to Lufthansa, serves as the flag carrier of Germany. When combined with its subsidiaries, it stands as the second-largest airline in Europe in terms of passengers carried, after the ultra low-cost carrier Ryanair. Lufthansa is also one of the five founding members of Star Alliance, which is the world's largest airline alliance, formed in 1997.
Besides its own services, and owning subsidiary passenger airlines Austrian Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings (referred to in English by Lufthansa as its Passenger Airline Group), Deutsche Lufthansa AG owns several aviation-related companies, such as Lufthansa Technik and LSG Sky Chefs, as part of the Lufthansa Group. In total, the group has over 700 aircraft, making it one of the largest airline fleets in the world.
Lufthansa's registered office and corporate headquarters are in Cologne. The main operations base, called Lufthansa Aviation Center, is at Lufthansa's primary hub at Frankfurt Airport, and its secondary hub is at Munich Airport where a secondary Flight Operations Centre is maintained.
The company was founded as Luftag in 1953 by staff of the former Deutsche Luft Hansa that had been politically connected to the government of Nazi Germany and dissolved after World War II. Luftag continued the traditional branding of the German flag carrier by acquiring the Luft Hansa name and logo.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NK28BJ - Emirates (Arabic: طَيَران الإمارات DMG: Ṭayarān Al-Imārāt) is one of two flag carriers of the United Arab Emirates (the other being Etihad). Based in Garhoud, Dubai, the airline is a subsidiary of The Emirates Group, which is owned by the government of Dubai's Investment Corporation of Dubai. As of 2019, it was also the largest airline in the Middle East, operating over 3,600 flights per week from its hub at Terminal 3 of Dubai International Airport. It operates to more than 150 cities in 80 countries across all continents (except Antarctica) through its fleet of nearly 300 aircraft. Cargo activities are undertaken by Emirates SkyCargo.
Emirates is the world's fourth-largest airline by scheduled revenue passenger-kilometers flown, and the second-largest in terms of freight tonne-kilometers flown.
During the mid-1980s, Gulf Air began to cut back its services to Dubai. As a result, Emirates was conceived on 15 March 1985, with backing from Dubai's royal family, with Pakistan International Airlines giving two of the airline's first aircraft. With $10 million in start-up capital, it was required to operate independently of government subsidy. Pakistan International Airlines provided free training facilities to Emirates' cabin crew at Karachi airport. The airline was headed by Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the airline's present chairman. In the years following its founding, the airline expanded both its fleet and its destinations. In October 2008, Emirates moved all operations at Dubai International Airport to Terminal 3.
Emirates operates a mixed fleet of Airbus and Boeing wide-body aircraft, and is one of the few airlines to operate an all-wide-body aircraft fleet (excluding Emirates Executive). As of December 2021, Emirates is the largest Airbus A380 operator with 119 aircraft in service, and with one aircraft having been retired. Since its introduction, the Airbus A380 has become an integral part of the Emirates fleet, especially on long-haul, high-density routes

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NK28EP - EasyJet plc (styled as easyJet) is a British multinational low-cost airline group headquartered at London Luton Airport. It operates domestic and international scheduled services on 927 routes in more than 34 countries via its affiliate airlines EasyJet UK, EasyJet Switzerland, and EasyJet Europe. EasyJet plc is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index. EasyGroup Holdings Ltd, the investment vehicle of the airline's founder, Greek-Cypriot businessman Stelios Haji-Ioannou, is the largest shareholder with a 15.27% stake (as of September 2021). It employs circa 13,000 people, based throughout Europe but mainly in the UK.
Since its establishment in 1995, EasyJet has expanded through a combination of acquisitions, and base openings fuelled by consumer demand for low-cost air travel. The group, along with associate companies EasyJet UK, EasyJet Europe and EasyJet Switzerland, operates 308 aircraft. It has 29 bases across Europe, the largest being Gatwick. In 2014, the airline carried more than 65 million passengers, making it the second-largest budget airline in Europe by number of passengers carried, behind Ryanair.
EasyJet was featured in the television series Airline, broadcast on ITV (19982007), which followed the airline's operations at London Luton and later at other bases. Its pilot training scheme was the subject of another ITV television series, easyJet: Inside the Cockpit, which premiered in August 2017.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NK28P0 - Ethiopian Airlines (commonly referred to as Ethiopian), formerly Ethiopian Air Lines (EAL), is the flag carrier of Ethiopia, and is wholly owned by the country's government. EAL was founded on 21 December 1945 and commenced operations on 8 April 1946, expanding to international flights in 1951. The firm became a share company in 1965 and changed its name from Ethiopian Air Lines to Ethiopian Airlines.
The airline has been a member of the International Air Transport Association since 1959 and of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) since 1968. Ethiopian is a Star Alliance member, having joined in December 2011. The company slogan is The New Spirit of Africa. Ethiopian's hub and headquarters are at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, from where it serves a network of 125 passenger destinations20 of them domesticand 44 freighter destinations. The airline has secondary hubs in Togo and Malawi. Ethiopian is Africa's largest airline in terms of passengers carried, destinations served, fleet size, and revenue. Ethiopian is also the world's fourth-largest airline by the number of countries served.
A CNN investigation alleged that Ethiopian Airlines Cargo airplanes transported weapons to airports in Eritrea during the Tigray War. The airline billed Ethiopia's Ministry of Defence at least six times in November 2020. The article's reporter claimed that using civil aircraft to smuggle military weapons violates international aviation law

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M95NCT - Darts or dart-throwing is a competitive sport in which two or more players bare-handedly throw small sharp-pointed missiles known as darts at a round target known as a dartboard
The standard numbered point system is attributed to Lancashire carpenter Brian Gamlin, who devised it in 1896 to penalise inaccuracy, though this is disputed. Many configurations have been used, varying by time and location. In particular, the Yorkshire and Manchester Log End boards differ from the standard board in that they have no triple, only double and bullseye. The Manchester board is smaller than the standard, with a playing area of only 25 cm (9.8 in) across, with double and bull areas measuring just 4 mm (0.16 in). The London Fives board is another variation, with only 12 equal segments, with the doubles and trebles being a quarter of an inch (6.35 mm) wide.
Mathematically, removing the rotational symmetry by placing the 20 at the top, there are 19!, or 121,645,100,408,832,000 possible dartboards. Many different layouts would penalise a player more than the current setup
however, the current setup actually does the job rather efficiently. There have been several mathematical papers published that consider the optimal dartboard.
Before World War I, pubs in the United Kingdom had dartboards made from solid blocks of wood, usually elm. But darts pocked the surface of elm such that it was common for a hole to develop around the treble twenty. The other problem was that elm wood needed periodic soaking to keep the wood soft.
In 1935, chemist Ted Leggatt and pub owner Frank Dabbs began using the century plant, a type of agave, to make dartboards. Small bundles of sisal fibres of the same length were bundled together. The bundles were then compressed into a disk and bound with a metal ring. This new dartboard was an instant success. It was more durable and required little maintenance. Furthermore, darts did little or no damage to the board
they simply parted the packed fibres whe

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M84KJK - Etihad Airways (Arabic: شَرِكَة ٱلْاِتِّحَاد لِلطَّيْرَان, romanized: sharikat al-ittiḥād li-ṭ-ṭayarān) is one of two flag carriers of the United Arab Emirates (the other being Emirates). Its head office is in Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi, near Abu Dhabi International Airport. Etihad commenced operations in November 2003.[2] It is the second-largest airline in the UAE after Emirates. The name Etihad is Arabic for 'Union'.
The airline operates more than 1,000 flights per week to over 120 passenger and cargo destinations in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America, with a fleet of 102 Airbus and Boeing aircraft as of February 2020. In 2015, Etihad carried 14.8 million passengers, a 22.3% increase from the previous year, delivering revenues of US$9.02 billion and net profits of US$103 million. Its main base is Abu Dhabi International Airport.
In addition to its core activity of passenger transportation, Etihad also operates Etihad Holidays and Etihad Cargo. Etihad established its airline alliance, Etihad Airways Partners, in October 2015 which was disbanded in 2018 after several of its members fell into financial difficulties. Etihad Airways holds minority equity investments in the participating airlines, as well as having had a stake in Virgin Australia, until its insolvency in April 2020 with no return on investment. Booking for these airlines was consolidated under one network.
The emirate of Abu Dhabi was a joint-owner of Gulf Air along with Bahrain, Qatar, and the Sultanate of Oman. Abu Dhabi International Airport was one of Gulf Air's bases and hubs from the 1970s until September 2005, when Abu Dhabi withdrew from the airline, leaving it an Oman and Bahrain-owned airline until the former's exit in 2007 to focus on Oman Air.
In July 2003, future UAE president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who wanted an airline for Abu Dhabi, issued a Royal (Amiri) Decree that established Etihad Airways as the second flag carrier of the UAE

Each row ends with a pair of green and red lights which flash to indicate that flight is boarding. They indicate each flight's destination, its flight number and carrier, and its departure gate and time.
Platform split-flap displays are used across the Deutsche Bahn network, though mostly being replaced by liquid crystal displays.

The airline was also the largest UK domestic operator, serving major British cities, including London, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Belfast, as well as remote areas of the British Isles such as the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. From 1946 until 1974, BEA operated a network of internal German routes between West Berlin and West Germany as well.
Formed as the British European Airways division of British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) on 1 January 1946, BEA became a crown corporation in its own right on 1 August 1946.
Inflight smoking is prohibited by almost all airlines
smoking on domestic U.S. airliners, for instance, was banned for almost all routes beginning in 1988, with all planes being smoke-free by the end of the 1990s. According to FAA regulations, smoking lit cigarettes or anything else that produces smoke or flame is prohibited onboard most commercial aircraft. However, the FAA has not issued a regulation for or against electronic cigarettes, leaving that decision up to the individual airlines

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7N816 - Close detail of the word München carved into a dark wooden beer barrel or decorative cask, photographed as a textured symbol of Munich, Oktoberfest and Bavarian beer tradition. The umlaut over the U, the deep carved lettering, oak leaf decoration and curved barrel form make the image useful for stock photography on German brewing, Munich tourism, Oktoberfest history, cooperage, beer halls, beer tents, Bavarian culture, festival branding, hospitality and regional identity. The warm brown timber, worn grain, hand carved look and shadowed surface give the scene a heritage feeling, linking modern festival tourism with older craft traditions around wooden barrels, brewery storage, cask beer and ceremonial tapping. Oktoberfest takes place on the Theresienwiese in Munich, while the official Oktoberfest site highlights the long-standing custom of the first beer barrel being tapped at the Schottenhamel tent to open the festival. Wooden beer barrels also remain part of Oktoberfest imagery, with Augustiner Festhalle noted by the official site for serving beer from traditional wooden barrels known as Hirsche. This image can illustrate travel guides, editorial articles, brewery features, food and drink publishing, beer culture, Bavarian heritage, Munich city branding, German language, carved signage, pub and bar features, hospitality marketing and historical explainers about the craft of coopering. The close-up format avoids crowds and recognisable people, making it flexible for commercial and editorial use where a neutral but instantly recognisable Oktoberfest or Munich visual is needed. The lighting appears direct and bright, revealing the wood texture and carved details without showing weather or season beyond the wider Oktoberfest and beer festival association. It suits themes such as Bavarian tradition, German beer tourism, wooden casks, brewery decoration, Oktoberfest symbols and Munich as a global destination for beer, food, culture and seasonal celebrations.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F1J8BR - Pan Am Flight 103 was a regularly scheduled Pan Am transatlantic flight from Frankfurt to Detroit, via London and New York, that was destroyed by a terrorist bomb on Wednesday, 21 December 1988, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew on board, in what became known as the Lockerbie bombing. Large sections of the aircraft crashed onto residential areas of Lockerbie, Scotland, killing 11 more people on the ground.
Following a three-year joint investigation by Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, arrest warrants were issued for two Libyan nationals in November 1991. In 1999, Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi handed over the two men for trial at Camp Zeist, Netherlands after protracted negotiations and UN sanctions. In 2001, Libyan intelligence officer Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was jailed for life after being found guilty of 270 counts of murder in connection with the bombing. In August 2009, he was released by the Scottish Government on compassionate grounds after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. He died in May 2012, remaining the only person to be convicted for the attack. He had continually protested his innocence.
In 2003, Gaddafi accepted responsibility for the Lockerbie bombing and paid compensation to the families of the victims, although he maintained that he had never given the order for the attack. During the Libyan Civil War, in 2011, a former government official claimed that the Libyan leader had personally ordered the bombing. Numerous conspiracy theories have developed regarding responsibility for the destruction of Pan Am Flight 103.
