The museum is faced with Portland stone, but the perimeter walls and other parts of the building were built using Haytor granite from Dartmoor in South Devon, transported via the unique Haytor Granite Tramway.
In 1846 Robert Smirke was replaced as the museum's architect by his brother Sydney Smirke, whose major addition was the Round Reading Room 18541857
at 140 feet (43 m) in diameter it was then the second widest dome in the world, the Pantheon in Rome being slightly wider.
The next major addition was the White Wing 18821884 added behind the eastern end of the South Front, the architect being Sir John Taylor.

Founded as a monastery by monks of the Irish tradition in the 660s, it was refounded as a Benedictine monastery by St Wilfrid in 672. The church became collegiate in the tenth century, and acted as a mother church within the large Diocese of York for the remainder of the Middle Ages. The present church is the fourth, and was built between the 13th and 16th centuries. In 1836 the church became the cathedral for the Diocese of Ripon. In 2014 the Diocese was incorporated into the new Diocese of Leeds, and the church became one of three co-equal cathedrals of the Bishop of Leeds.
The cathedral is notable architecturally for its gothic west front in the Early English style, considered one of the best of its type, as well as the Geometric east window. The seventh-century crypt of Wilfrid's church is a significant example of early Christian architecture in England. The cathedral has Grade I listed building status.
Saint Wilfrid was buried in this church near the high altar. Devastated by the English king Eadred in AD 948 as a warning to the Archbishop of York, only the crypt of Wilfrid's church survived but today this tiny 7th-century chapel rests complete beneath the later grandeur of Archbishop Roger de Pont l'Evêque's 12th century minster. A second minster soon arose at Ripon, but it too perished this time in 1069 at the hands of William the Conqueror. John Middleton (15781623), the Childe of Hale, was reputed to be nine feet, three inches tall, or 2.8 m. His cottage and grave are located in the village. Just outside St Mary's Church was a wooden carving of the Childe Of Hale that is said to have been life-sized. It was replaced in 2013 by a 3-metre bronze statue by sculptor Diane Gorvin
Middleton was born in the village of Hale, near Liverpool. According to contemporary accounts and his epitaph, he grew to the height of 9 feet 3 inches (2.82 m) and slept with his feet hanging out the window of his house.
Because of his size the landlord and sheriff of Lancashire, Gilbert Ireland, hired him as a bodyguard. When King James I stopped by in 1617 to knight Ireland he heard about Middleton and invited both of them to the court, which they accepted in 1620. Middleton beat the King's champion in wrestling and in doing so broke the man's thumb. He received £20, a large amount of money in those times. Jealous of his wealth, Middleton's companions mugged him or swindled him out of his money while he was returning to Hale. Middleton died impoverished in 1623. He was buried in the cemetery of St Mary's Church in Hale. The epitaph reads, Here lyeth the bodie of John Middleton the Childe of Hale. Nine feet three. Borne 1578 Dyede 1623. He is likely one of the tallest people in history. If these height markings are accurate, he would surpass Robert Wadlow's stature

The company's founder Eric Kirkham Cole was born on 4 July 1901 at Prittlewell, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, and was educated at Southend Day Technical School, followed by a three-year apprenticeship. Cole and his future wife Muriel Bradshaw started out making radio sets in 1924.
William Streatfield Verrells, a schoolmaster and freelance journalist from Southend-on-Sea, wrote an article in a local newspaper asking if it was possible to power a radio set from the mains electricity supply rather than batteries. Cole saw a possible business opportunity
In the late 1930s, Ekco began producing its own radio valves at its Southend-on-Sea works. Following the company's decision to abandon the venture, the plant was converted to a lamp factory. In 1943, Ekco acquired Ensign Lamps based in Preston. In 1950, Ekco sold 51% of its lighting subsidiary, Ekco-Ensign Electric Ltd, to Thorn Electrical Industries.

The choices of location, architect, design, and construction company were all criticised by politicians, the media and the Scottish public. Scheduled to open in 2001, it did so in 2004, more than three years late with an estimated final cost of £414 million, many times higher than initial estimates of between £10m and £40m. Comprising an area of 1.6 ha (4 acres), with a perimeter of 480 m (1570 ft), the Scottish Parliament Building is located 1 km (0.6 mi) east of Edinburgh city centre on the edge of the Old Town. The large site previously housed the headquarters of the Scottish and Newcastle brewery which were demolished to make way for the building. The white rose was first adopted as a heraldic badge by Edmund of Langley, 1st Duke of York (13411402), the fourth surviving son of King Edward III of England. Their respective descendants fought for control of the throne of England during several decades of civil warfare, which became known as the Wars of the Roses, after the badges of the two competing cadet royal houses.
The Tudor Rose of England
The Wars of the Roses were ended by King Henry VII of England who, upon marrying Elizabeth of York, symbolically but not politically, united the White and Red Roses to create the Tudor Rose, the symbol of the English Monarchy. In the late 17th century the Jacobites took up the White Rose of York as their emblem, celebrating White Rose Day on 10 June, the anniversary of the birth of The Old Pretender in 1688

Ground floor breaks forwards and is surmounted by 3/4 engaged columns with capitals modelled on those of the Temple of Jupiter, Rome, breaking forwards again to centre and with hexastyle pedimented 'portico'. Crowning dentil entablature with modillion cornice. Ground floor has mainly 3/6 windows with radial glazing bars to heads. First and second floors have mainly 6/6 sashes, taller to first floor. Third floor has 3/3 sashes. Central entrance has double, glazed doors and fanlight. INTERIOR: noted as retaining original plasterwork and joinery. A detailed description of the hotel in 1838, and a summary of its significance in an international context, can be found in Pevsner (1976) who described Queen's Hotel and 'one of the finest early Victorian English Hotels'. HISTORICAL NOTE: a notable early example of the larger hotels which were erected in some resorts before the great 'railway hotels'. The Promenade was laid out in 1818 as a tree-lined avenue from the Colonnade in the High Street to the Sherborne Spa (later named the Imperial Spa), on the site of which the Queen's Hotel now stands. By 1826 it was a carriage drive with spacious gravelled walk on either side. The north chapel is known as the Hollingworth Chapel and the south chapel is the Staley Chapel. The tower is in four stages with angled buttresses, a three-light west window above which is a clock face and two-light belfry openings. In one corner is a stair turret. At the top is a castellated parapet with crocketed corner finials.
In the churchyard is a sundial with a dial dated 1811. It consists of a stone shaft with a copper dial and a gnomon. It is listed at Grade II. Also listed at Grade II are the gatepiers, railings, steps and walls of the churchyard. Near the church is a medieval cross which was restored in 1760 and again in 1897, the latter restoration being to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria. The octagonal shaft stands on a stepped circular ashlar plinth. On its top is a cubical sundial with three copper faces. It is listed at Grade II*

History
The name Lymm, of Celtic origins, means a place of running water and is likely derived from an ancient stream that ran through the village centre. The village appears as Limme in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Lymm was an agricultural village until the Industrial Revolution, which brought the Bridgewater Canal and the Warrington and Altrincham Junction Railway to the village. The village played a prominent role within the salt extraction industry, gold beating industry and cotton industry (many of its inhabitants were fustian cutters).
Lymm Heritage Centre, which opened in June 2017, is in the centre of the village on Legh Street. It hosts exhibitions related to local history as well as activities for schools and visitors.
Morris dancing was taking place in Lymm as early as 1817, often appearing in the village at Rushbearing time throughout the Victorian era. Morris dancing[7] continues to feature within the village with Lymm Morris dancers frequently performing during Rushbearing and at the various annual village festivals including the Lymm May Queen Festival, Lymm Festival and Lymm Dickensian Festival.
In 2017, Lymm was voted as one of the 'Best Places to Live' according to The Times and The Sunday Times list. In 2023, the village was voted as one of Britains 'Most Desirable Towns' according to The Daily Telegraph

The Irish name for Dublin is Baile Atha Cliath (pronounced: Ball-ya-Awha-Clia) which means The Town of the Ford of the Reed Hurdles.
Beside the pub is the Father Matthew Bridge crosses the river Liffey. It was at this very spot that the original crossing of the river was located. Here reed matting was positioned on the river bed which enabled travellers to cross safely at low tide.
The Brazen Head is Ireland's oldest pub. In fact there has been a hostelry here since 1198. The present building was built in 1754 as a coaching inn. However The Brazen Head appears in documents as far back as 1653.
An advertisement from the 1750's reads Christopher Quinn of The Brazen Head in Bridge Street has fitted said house with neat accommodations and commodious cellars for said business.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M84JTN - Though an earlier license had existed on part of the current site of The Temple Bar, we can directly trace the existing license back to 1835 when enterprising publican, Cornelius O'Meara, Grocer, Tea, Wine, and Spirit Merchant acquired the blossoming location at the corner of Temple Lane and adjacent to Samuel Figgis, Porter Merchant, who ran his thriving brewing business here. The city of Dublin was experiencing something of an economic renaissance at this time and Temple Bar was idyllically laced between the river and the administrative centre of Dublin.
O'Meara was a committed publican intent on spreading his wings. He also ran another pub at No. 1 Wood Quay. This was then at the epicentre of Dublin 19th century rag trade. O'Meara's two nearest neighbours were Christopher McCauley, Hat Manufacturer, and Edward Loman, Hatter.
O'Meara served almost a decade at the Temple Bar Pub before he sold out to James Farley, Grocer and Spirit Merchant in 1844. James Farley knew the business here very well, having made but a short journey from 38 East Essex Street where he had operated as a Provisions dealer. James Farley's reign at this old hostelery was of brief duration.
The Great Famine was raging across the country with unprecedented horror and devastation when William Cranston, a much respected Dublin publican, took the wheel in 1847.
During the middle to late 1850s, a new wave of Provisions, Dealers and Dram Grocers had infiltrated the Temple Bar area. They operated the practise of dram-drinking'. The Dram Grocers allowed customers to buy spirits in an off-sales liquor store capacity and illegally consume them on the premises behind screens and makeshift partitions. This practice created much financial hardship for the authorities and regular or legitimate vintners (wine merchants).
William Cranston was a member of the License Trade delegation who traveled to lobby the British Parliament in Westminster, London, in 1863 to have this practice forbidden

The fountain, where the north tower of the World Trade Center once stood, was undergoing tests of the massive pumping systems that will blast 26,000 gallons a minute over the 30-foot deep black granite walls.
Daniels, who happened upon the test yesterday, said the sight of the water filling the 1-acre pool was awe-inspiring after years of planning and building.
Construction workers from around the site paused to look and listen during the tests as engineers below the memorial plaza monitored and adjusted the 16 pumps that will circulate 480,000 gallons of recycled water.
During the design phase of the memorial, there were concerns that the fountains might be too loud. But Daniels said the sound of the cascading water yesterday created a nice, peaceful background, like the sound of the ocean.
It's perfect. It's not overwhelming at all, Daniels said.
A second fountain over the footprint of the south tower will be ready for testing later this year. A spokesman for the Port Authority, which is overseeing construction of the $500 million memorial, said yesterday's trial run went very well.
The two fountains together make up the nation's largest manmade waterfalls, and are at the heart of the design of the memorial, called Reflecting Absence.
Paula Berry, a 9/11 family member who served on the 13-member jury that picked the memorial design by Michael Arad, was ecstatic about the test run.
The presence of water is incredibly important at the memorial, said Berry. When you think of the memorial's name, Reflecting Absence, you have to have the means to reflect and the water plays that role.
But Berry said the sound of the water rushing over the sides of the fountains could very well be one of the most lasting impressions visitors take away.
Yesterday's tests lasted a few hours, and will be repeated as needed.
Construction of the memorial remains on schedule for its planned opening next Sept. 11 the 10th anniversary

Half-mast means the flag is flown two-thirds of the way up the flagpole, with at least the height of the flag between the top of the flag and the top of the flagpole. Flags cannot be flown at half-mast on poles that are more than 45° from the vertical, but a mourning cravat can be used instead (see below).
When a flag is to be flown at half-mast, it should first be raised all the way to the top of the mast, allowed to remain there for a second and then be lowered to the half-mast position. When it is being lowered from half-mast, it should again be raised to the top of the mast for a second before being fully lowered.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHBJTN - St Wilfrid's Church is in Church Lane, Grappenhall, a village in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is designated by Historic England as a Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth.
History
The church is Norman in origin, built probably in the earlier part of the 12th century and completed about 1120. This was a small and simple church, consisting of a nave, chancel and, possibly, an apse. The foundations of this church were discovered during the 187374 restoration.
A chantry chapel was added by the Boydell family in 1334 in a position where the south aisle now stands. From 1529 the church was largely rebuilt in local sandstone. The old church was demolished and a new nave, chancel, north aisle and a west tower were built. In 1539 the south aisle was added, which incorporated the Boydell chapel. The south porch was added in 1641 and at this time the west wall was strengthened. In 1833 the roof of the nave was raised to form a clerestory and in the 1850s the south aisle was further extended, and a vestry was built. There was a more substantial restoration in 187374 by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, which included the provision of new floors and roofs, at a cost of about £4,000
The church is built in red sandstone with a slate roof. Its plan consists of a west tower, a continuous nave and chancel of seven bays with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a chapel at the east end of the south aisle, a vestry and a south porch. The tower is in three stages, with a Tudor west door, and a four-light west window. It has diagonal west buttresses and square east buttresses. In the middle stage are small windows, above which are clock faces and bell openings. On the summit is a crenellated parapet. The tower is about 76 feet (23 m) high

Robins Pie and Mash, Chapel Road, Ilford, which is being run by the fifth generation of a family, closed on Saturday.
Owner June Robins said: There is still demand for pie and mash but unfortunately this is not the case in Ilford any more. Customers seem to want a different type of food.
It was a very sad day when we closed. We first opened the branch over 30 years ago but things have become a lot more expensive, especially as we get all our meat from Scotland.
The company, which has recently started supplying frozen meals to the Asda supermarket chain, also has a number of other branches including one in High Street, Wanstead.
Ms Robins added: When we informed our customers we would be shutting they just kept asking why.
I don't think pie and mash is dying out as we have a lot of demand in other areas including at weddings and football games, including West Ham United.
But times are changing and people seem to want universal food such as pizza and burgers. Pie and mash has a limited regional appeal.
Traditionally pie and mash dates back to the 19th century, when Dutch ships delivered live eels, which were used in pies, to Billingsgate Market.
Customer, Paul Scott, of Sandhurst Drive, Goodmayes, added: This is a great shame and customers aren't happy about it especially as there will now be no more pie and mash shops in Ilford.

The Flame arrived in Warrington from Halton via Liverpool Road at around 12.30pm. It will travel the length of Sankey Street, past the Golden Gates and Bank Park, where 300 primary school children took part in a mini-Olympics.
It was then carried to Market Gate where the 70-strong Warrington Male Voice Choir performed, and then turn down Buttermarket Street and on to Winwick Street. The Torch then called into Tesco for a 15-minute stop.
The route was announced by Warrington Borough Council and the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG).
Members of the public are invited to line the streets throughout the town centre or to visit Orford Park to celebrate the achievements of the eight inspirational Torchbearers who will be carrying the Flame in Warrington.
Torchbearers included Great Sankey resident Stephen Deakin MBE. He is the manager of the Royal Liverpool Hospital transplant sports team and an enthusiastic campaigner for organ donation.
Stephen aged 50, said: When I first heard I had been nominated I was absolutely made up but to be chosen to carry the torch. I am really honoured and humbled.

Caustic, bleak, no bullshit\u2014not that you\u2019d expect anything less from the plebian punk act that married nihilism with hooliganism. Not one of my most fav tracks, but one I think suitable for this violent week in Northern Ireland and Belfast in particular. The battle of the Boyne celebrations split the community in a way that the slightest spark may result in a burning car, watercannon on the street or more injuries being ferried to the Major Trauma Centre at the Royal Hospitals. They are experts in the field so fortunately you would be in good hands (medical, not catholic or protestant).
Many on the streets this week are apparently teenagers who never experienced the original 70's/80's 'troubles'.
Sinn Fein MLA Jennifer McCann was reported to be at Broadway for several hours during the trouble. She believes that those taking part in the rioting were not from the area.
'Mostly what I saw was people who came from other parts of Belfast, who would be known as anti-social elements, who had taken a lot of drink and were attacking the police,' she said.
'I am appealing to young people who may be caught up in this behaviour to stay away from Broadway, Ardoyne or anywhere else there may be a chance of trouble.'
There is a broad desire for peace across the community. Lets all hope normal more peaceful service can resume soon....

Following a fire, which completely destroyed the pavilion, the pier was rebuilt at a cost of £39 million and reopened on 23 October 2010.
at 01:35 BST on 28 July 2008, a fire at the foot of the north tower on the shoreward (eastern) end of the pavilion triggered the privately monitored fire alarm,[10] but the Essex-based alarm monitoring company were unable to contact the key-holder by mobile phone and no further action was taken.[11] It was not until 06:46 BST that the Avon Fire and Rescue Service was notified. It deployed 13 fire engines, special appliances, and more than 85 firefighters to tackle the blaze,[10] but the building was soon destroyed.

Robert Tinker, a Grand Pier employee, was later praised by the fire service as he braved the extreme intensity of the heat from the flames to rush around the side of the building to remove several gas canisters which had been stored within the premises, had these not been removed the fire service claimed that the fire could have been much worse, with the possibility of local residents and traders needing to be evacuated. Preliminary investigations suggested that the fire started due to a number of deep fat fryers which had been located within the area pavilion, however after further investigation this was later ruled out, as was arson. As important as the St Andrews cross to many people in the far north of the UK and strangely linked by a Hexadecimal number '0065BD'. Although I have heard it said that folk in the far islands of the north and west feel as distant from Holyrood as from Westminster. Living in north west england I can identify a little with that sentiment.
A saltire, Saint Andrew's Cross, or crux decussata is said to be the one on which St Andrew was martyred. The Cross of Burgundy contains a varient too. It is quite common to see it flying from Scottish Government buildings every day from 8am until sunset. Its use appears to date from around 1180. Although it was the Parliament of Scotland that decreed in 1385 that Scottish soldiers wear a white Saint Andrew's Cross on their person. This was both front and back to identify them.
The blues used varied on shades of dyes etc and many variations evolved over the years. There were calls to standardise the shade of blue. In 2003 a committee of the Scottish Parliament met to examine a petition that the Scottish Government adopt the Pantone 300 colour as a standard. How very Photoshop(!) This blue is of a lighter shade than the Pantone 280 of the Union Jack Flag. Having taken advice from a number of sources, including the office of the Lord Lyon King of Arms, the committee recommended that the optimum shade of blue for the Saltire be Pantone 300. Nurds and pub quiz experts may want to know that Pantone 300 is #0065BD expressed as hexadecimal web colours.

A number of cars and pedestrians were piling up, hence the two lads on the front of the boat waving.
The happy falcon is a frequent visitor to Carrington and is a LPG Tanker. For anyone interested it is IMO no 9227261 Flag IOM. It was Built 2002 and is 3366gt.
As can be seen its got a great red coloured hull and the boat can be easily seen from some distance away.

It consists of a house, originally called Bank Hall, flanked by two detached service wings at right angles to the house, one on each side. The house and the service wings are each designated by English Heritage as Grade I listed buildings.
At the time the house was built Warrington was in the historic county of Lancashire. The architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner declared it to be the finest house of its date in south Lancashire
Bank Hall was built in 1750 for Thomas Patten. The architect was James Gibbs and it is likely that it was the last important building of his design to be completed in his lifetime. When it was built it stood in open countryside to the north of the town of Warrington.
The Patten family were important merchants in the town. Thomas' father had made the lower River Mersey navigable from Runcorn to Bank Quay, Warrington, and had established a copper smelting factory at Bank Quay. In 1870 John Wilson-Patten, 1st Baron Winmarleigh, sold the hall to Warrington Borough Council for £9000 (£640,000 as of 2013), and 13 acres (5.3 ha) of surrounding land for a further £15,000 (£1,060,000 as of 2013).
Almost all of the land was opened as Warrington's first public park in 1873. When the house was built, it was surrounded by a high wall. In 1895 this was replaced by iron railings and a fine set of gates.
