Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG8YTG - Hale is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Halton, Cheshire, England with a population of 1,800. The village is north of the River Mersey, and just to the east of the boundary with Merseyside. It is 2+1?2 miles east of Speke in Liverpool, and 4 miles south-west of Widnes. The nearby village of Halebank is to the north-east.
Historically part of Lancashire, until 1 April 1974 the area formed part of the Whiston Rural District.
The population of the parish is stable with a population of 1,898 (2001 census), 1,841 (2011 census) and 1,800 (2021 census).
John Middleton (1578?1623), the Childe of Hale, was reputed to be nine feet, three inches tall, or 2.8 m. His cottage and grave are located in the village. Just outside St Mary's Church was a wooden carving of the Childe Of Hale that is said to have been life-sized. It was replaced in 2013 by a 3-metre bronze statue by sculptor Diane Gorvin
Middleton was born in the village of Hale, near Liverpool. According to contemporary accounts and his epitaph, he grew to the height of 9 feet 3 inches (2.82 m) and slept with his feet hanging out the window of his house.
Because of his size the landlord and sheriff of Lancashire, Gilbert Ireland, hired him as a bodyguard. When King James I stopped by in 1617 to knight Ireland he heard about Middleton and invited both of them to the court, which they accepted in 1620. Middleton beat the King's champion in wrestling and in doing so broke the man's thumb. He received ?20, a large amount of money in those times. Jealous of his wealth, Middleton's companions mugged him or swindled him out of his money while he was returning to Hale. Middleton died impoverished in 1623. He was buried in the cemetery of St Mary's Church in Hale. The epitaph reads, Here lyeth the bodie of John Middleton the Childe of Hale. Nine feet three. Borne 1578 Dyede 1623. He is likely one of the tallest people in history. If these height markings are accurate, he would surpass Robert Wadlow's stature

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RE0X9N - Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia, also known as the Royal Yacht Britannia, is the former royal yacht of the British monarchy. She was in service from 1954 until 1997. She was the 83rd such vessel since King Charles II acceded to the throne in 1660, and is the second royal yacht to bear the name, the first being the racing cutter built for the Prince of Wales in 1893. During her 43-year career, the yacht travelled more than a million nautical miles around the world to more than 600 ports in 135 countries. Now retired from royal service, Britannia is permanently berthed at Ocean Terminal, Leith in Edinburgh, Scotland, where it is a visitor attraction with over 300,000 visits each year.
Construction
HMY Britannia was built at the shipyard of John Brown & Co. Ltd in Clydebank, Dunbartonshire. She was launched by Queen Elizabeth II on 16 April 1953, and commissioned on 11 January 1954. The ship was designed with three masts: a 133-foot (41 m) foremast, a 139-foot (42 m) mainmast, and a 118-foot (36 m) mizzenmast. The top aerial on the foremast and the top 20 feet (6.1 m) of the mainmast were hinged to allow the ship to pass under bridges.
Britannia was designed to be converted into a hospital ship in time of war, although this capability was never used. In the event of nuclear war, it was intended for the Queen and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, to take refuge aboard Britannia off the north-west coast of Scotland

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP38Y - Knutsford Market Hall on Princess Street, Knutsford, Cheshire, shown from the street with its distinctive white-painted frontage, arched brick detailing, and traditional signage. The historic market hall has long formed part of Knutsford's town-centre identity, reflecting the town's role as a local trading and market centre serving surrounding rural Cheshire.
Bunting strung across the street suggests a community or seasonal event, reinforcing the building's ongoing civic and cultural role within the town. Knutsford is a well-known Cheshire market town, combining historic architecture with independent retail and local services, and the Market Hall remains a visible reminder of traditional English market-town life.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating British market towns, historic civic buildings, local retail heritage, town-centre regeneration, and everyday life in small-town England.

The Loyal Orange Institution, commonly known as the Orange Order, is an international fraternal movement based in Northern Ireland and primarily associated with Ulster Protestants (it also has lodges in England, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland, as well as in parts of the Commonwealth of Nations and the United States. Most of the organization's lodges are located in Ireland, England, and Scotland, although others can be found throughout the British Commonwealth, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Africa. The lodges of every country are independent, but the Orange Order meets in a triennial world council. The Orange Order was founded by Ulster Protestants in County Armagh in 1795, during a period of Protestant?Catholic sectarian conflict, as a fraternity sworn to maintain the Protestant Ascendancy in Ireland. It is headed[definition needed] by the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland, established in 1798. Its name is a tribute to the Dutch-born Protestant king William of Orange, who defeated Catholic king James II in the Williamite?Jacobite War (1688?1691). The order is best known for its yearly marches, the biggest of which are held on or around 12 July (The Twelfth), a public holiday in Northern Ireland
The Orange Order is a conservative, British unionist and Ulster loyalist organisation. Thus it has traditionally opposed Irish nationalism/republicanism and campaigned against Scottish independence.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ33F - This image shows a large loyalist mural located in the Lower Shankill area of Belfast, Northern Ireland. The mural includes references to Steve McCrea, Long Kesh prison (also known as the Maze Prison), and Compound 21, alongside symbols associated with the Red Hand Commando. It forms part of the long tradition of political and paramilitary wall murals found in working-class areas of Belfast.
The artwork incorporates portraits, prison imagery, insignia, and text referencing imprisonment during the period of conflict known as the Troubles. Unionist and loyalist flags are displayed above the building, reinforcing the political identity of the area. Adjacent text panels provide contextual or commemorative information, typical of memorial-style murals created after the peace process.
Such murals are a visible and contested element of Northern Ireland's post-conflict landscape. They function variously as memorials, political statements, community markers, and tourist points of interest, while also reflecting unresolved historical divisions and competing narratives of the conflict.
The photograph was taken in daylight under partly cloudy skies, with passers-by visible nearby, highlighting how these murals remain part of everyday urban life in Belfast decades after the end of large-scale violence.

Bushmills had a population of 1,295 in the 2011 Census.[3] It is located 60 miles (97 km) from Belfast, 11 miles (18 km) from Ballycastle and 9 miles (14 km) from Coleraine. The village owes its name to the River Bush and to a large watermill that was built there in the early 17th century. It is home to the Old Bushmills Distillery, which produces Irish whiskey, and is near the Giant's Causeway.

The distillery's products include the Bushmills Original and Black Bush blends, as well as the 10-, 12-, 16-, and 21-year-old Bushmills Single Malts. To celebrate the 400th anniversary of distilling starting in the area the distillery released a unique whiskey called the 1608 which included crystal malt. The distillery draws its water, not from the River Bush itself, but from a tributary known as Saint Columbs Rill.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RGHXB0 - A large, brightly coloured mural promoting Faith Hope Charity, painted on the side of a small brick building in The Fountain, a predominantly loyalist residential area of Derry / Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The artwork features portraits, religious and charitable symbolism, and references to international outreach, including Ghana, alongside strong expressions of British identity. A large Union flag painted on an adjacent wall reinforces the cultural and political context of the neighbourhood.
The Fountain is one of the oldest inhabited areas of the city and is well known for its distinct community identity and extensive use of murals and painted symbols as expressions of heritage, belief, and local values. Murals in this area often combine themes of religion, charity, history, and identity, serving both as community statements and as visual markers within the urban landscape.
Photographed in daylight under overcast skies, the image captures the mural's bold colours contrasted against the surrounding residential environment. The photograph is suitable for editorial and commercial uses illustrating Northern Irish mural culture, community identity, charitable organisations, peace and reconciliation contexts, and the continuing role of public art in expressing local narratives within divided or post-conflict urban settings.
Location: The Fountain, Derry / Londonderry, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, BT48 (exact street and full postcode not visible on the image).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39XY7 - This is the end of a second decade making street art for Dr.D ( aka @Subvertiser ) and the second solo show. There won't be another one for ten years. 'Panicky in the UK' is a collection of the past 20 years of Dr.D's work.
About
'Panicky in the UK' BSMT presents a subversion art exhibition by Dr.D (aka Subvertiser) with Benjamin Irritant and Lazy Edwin.
This is the end of a second decade making street art for Dr.D ( aka @Subvertiser ) and the second solo show. There won't be another one for ten years. 'Panicky in the UK' is a collection of the past 20 years of Dr.D's work that takes like a sampler from the signage of the street and remixes it with the misheard and repurposed phrases of everyday conversations.
Dr. D aka Subvertiserhas been like the window wiper to the rain of advertising we suffer daily. His bus stop and billboard interventions have forced us to stop, recalibrate and question what we have seen and believed for twenty years! Dr. D will be showing alongside two contemporaries, Benjamin Irritant and Edwin who also work with humorous word play and anti-establishment rhetoric while having a keen eye on the climate emergency. Benjamin Irritant stabs at capitalism with surreal collage and Edwin turns street art on it's head, refusing to beautify thereby pushing against the commercial machine that Public Art has become.
This isn't just decoration chasing likes and pound notes. This is genuine street art. To make the show have some worth beyond just pictures on walls, part of the show will be fund raising for a food bank in the 'Panic Buy'.
BSMT has already raised funds for Extinction Rebellion and continuing in this environmentally sound consciousness, work in the show has been produced using repurposed and upcycled consumer goods and advertising detournement.
'Panicky in the UK' opens at BSMT Urban Art gallery with a private view April 2nd and will run until April 19th.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J7R - This image shows the Palace of Westminster, home to the UK Parliament, viewed from the River Thames in central London. The Gothic Revival complex dominates the skyline, with the Elizabeth Tower and the Victoria Tower rising above the riverside trees.
In the foreground, Lambeth Bridge spans the Thames, providing a strong visual lead-in across the river toward Westminster. The bridge connects the City of Westminster with Lambeth on the south bank and is a key transport crossing in this part of London.
The Palace of Westminster is one of the most recognisable symbols of British democracy and governance. Originally rebuilt in the 19th century after a catastrophic fire, it now serves as the meeting place for the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Its riverside setting reinforces the historic relationship between the Thames and the development of London as a political and administrative centre.
Photographed in daylight under a blue sky with scattered clouds, the image combines heritage architecture, river transport, and urban infrastructure. It is well suited to editorial use covering British politics, government institutions, London landmarks, heritage tourism, constitutional history, and the River Thames as a defining feature of the capital.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R22XMB - Tall Ships Youth Trust (TSYT) is a sail training organisation in the United Kingdom that currently owns and operates four 72ft Challenger yachts and a 55ft ketch.
Tall Ships Youth Trust, formerly the Sail Training Association, based in Portsmouth, is a charity registered with the Charity Commission.[1] It was founded in 1956 and is dedicated to the personal development of young people aged 12 to 25 through the crewing of ocean-going yachts. Thanks to this work with young people, Tall Ships Youth Trust is a member of The National Council for Voluntary Youth Services (NCVYS).
Each year, TSYT supports around 1,000 young people from across the UK through exhilarating voyages.
Tall Ships Youth Trust has operated a variety of craft
it used to own TS KI Sir Winston Churchill and TS K2 Malcolm Miller. These two three-masted topsail schooners are now privately owned and in the Mediterranean. TSYT used to operate a second sister-ship in addition to Stavros S Niarchos, the Prince William. However Prince William was removed from operational status at the end of 2007, to make way for the new Challenger yachts. In 2010 she was sold to the Pakistan Navy and renamed Rah Naward (Swift Mover).
The Challenger yachts provide a flexible approach to sail training, allowing TSYT to scale the amount of sailings relative to demand (i.e. not all yachts need to sail).
The Challenger yachts were part of a 12 strong fleet of Challengers built and raced in the 2000/1 and 2004/5 BT Global Challenge. The purchase of the craft provides TSYT with four stable, reliable and extremely well-tested craft to base a sail training program upon.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PYKTAG - Aer Lingus is the flag carrier of Ireland. Founded by the Irish Government, it was privatised between 2006 and 2015 and it is now a wholly owned subsidiary of International Airlines Group (IAG). The airline's head office is on the grounds of Dublin Airport in Cloghran, County Dublin.
Formed in 1936, Aer Lingus is a former member of the Oneworld airline alliance, which it left on 31 March 2007. After the takeover by IAG, it was expected that Aer Lingus would re-enter Oneworld, however, at a press briefing on 15 November 2017 the airline's then CEO Stephen Kavanagh stated that the airline has no plans to join Oneworld.[3] The airline has codeshares with Oneworld, Star Alliance and SkyTeam members, as well as interline agreements with Etihad Airways, JetBlue Airways and United Airlines. Aer Lingus has a hybrid business model, operating a mixed fare service on its European routes and full service, two-class flights on transatlantic routes.
Ryanair owned over 29% of Aer Lingus stock and the Irish state owned over 25% before being bought out by IAG in 2015. The state had previously held an 85% shareholding until the Government's decision to float the company on the Dublin and London stock exchanges on 2 October 2006. The principal group companies include Aer Lingus Limited, Aer Lingus Beachey Limited, Aer Lingus (Ireland) Limited and Dirnan Insurance Company Limited, all of which are wholly owned.
On 26 May 2015, after months of negotiations on a possible IAG takeover, the Irish government agreed to sell its 25% stake in the company. Ryanair retained a 30% stake in Aer Lingus which it agreed to sell to IAG on 10 July 2015 for ?2.55 per share. In August 2015, Aer Lingus' shareholders officially accepted IAG's takeover offer. IAG subsequently assumed control of Aer Lingus on 2 September 2015

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RKGHK3 - Lufthansa operate up to four return flights daily between Manchester and Franfurt
Deutsche Lufthansa AG commonly shortened to Lufthansa, serves as the flag carrier of Germany. When combined with its subsidiaries, it stands as the second-largest airline in Europe in terms of passengers carried, after the ultra low-cost carrier Ryanair. Lufthansa is also one of the five founding members of Star Alliance, which is the world's largest airline alliance, formed in 1997.
Besides its own services, and owning subsidiary passenger airlines Austrian Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings (referred to in English by Lufthansa as its Passenger Airline Group), Deutsche Lufthansa AG owns several aviation-related companies, such as Lufthansa Technik and LSG Sky Chefs, as part of the Lufthansa Group. In total, the group has over 700 aircraft, making it one of the largest airline fleets in the world.
Lufthansa's registered office and corporate headquarters are in Cologne. The main operations base, called Lufthansa Aviation Center, is at Lufthansa's primary hub at Frankfurt Airport, and its secondary hub is at Munich Airport where a secondary Flight Operations Centre is maintained.
The company was founded as Luftag in 1953 by staff of the former Deutsche Luft Hansa that had been politically connected to the government of Nazi Germany and dissolved after World War II. Luftag continued the traditional branding of the German flag carrier by acquiring the Luft Hansa name and logo.

GV II*
Hotel. 1838. Architects, RW and C Jearrad. Built on the site of the Sherborne Spa at a cost of ?47,000. Stucco over brick with slate roof. EXTERIOR: 4 storeys, 13 first-floor windows arranged 4:5:4, with 4-storey, 3-window range set back to right. Stucco detailing includes ground-floor horizontal rustication, drawn into voussoirs over window recesses, with crowns and 'VR' to keystones
deep round-arched recesses and panelled reveals to windows and entrance. Ground floor breaks forwards and is surmounted by 3/4 engaged columns with capitals modelled on those of the Temple of Jupiter, Rome, breaking forwards again to centre and with hexastyle pedimented 'portico'. Crowning dentil entablature with modillion cornice. Ground floor has mainly 3/6 windows with radial glazing bars to heads. First and second floors have mainly 6/6 sashes, taller to first floor. Third floor has 3/3 sashes. Central entrance has double, glazed doors and fanlight. INTERIOR: noted as retaining original plasterwork and joinery. A detailed description of the hotel in 1838, and a summary of its significance in an international context, can be found in Pevsner (1976) who described Queen's Hotel and 'one of the finest early Victorian English Hotels'. HISTORICAL NOTE: a notable early example of the larger hotels which were erected in some resorts before the great 'railway hotels'. The Promenade was laid out in 1818 as a tree-lined avenue from the Colonnade in the High Street to the Sherborne Spa (later named the Imperial Spa), on the site of which the Queen's Hotel now stands. By 1826 it was a carriage drive with spacious gravelled walk on either side. Notable guests to the Hotel include Edward VII (when Prince of Wales), Prince Louis Jerome Napoleon, the Rajah of Sarawak, Elgar, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The hotel opened 21 July 1838, its first lessee was Richard Liddell. It had over 120 bedrooms, 25 sitting rooms

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1Y84F - The basic verb phrase carry on means to continue doing something, but here, it specifically means to persevere and is often associated a British stiff upper lip.
According the UK's official History of Government blog, the British Ministry of Information developed a series of three posters in 1939 to rally and reassure its populace as World War II ramped up. The third, and now iconic, poster flashed Keep Calm and Carry On in white, capital letters underneath an image of a crown on a bright, grabbingly red background. Who, exactly, coined the slogan is unclear. The other two posters featured equally comforting slogans: Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution
Will Bring Us Victory and Freedom is in Peril
Defend it with all Your Might.
The British government printed nearly 2.5 million copies, reserving them to boost morale in case of a particularly bad German bombing. It never did display the posters, and most were recycled in 1940 during a wartime paper shortage.
The Keep Calm and Carry On poster languished in number and obscurity until Stuart Manley discovered a copy in 2000 tucked away in a box of old books for his bookshop, Barter Books, in Alnwick, England. His wife and co-owner, Mary, framed and displayed the poster. Patrons fell in love with it, and the booksellers printed tens of thousands of copies over the decade.
The poster skyrocketed in popularity after the 2008 recession, explained Foreign Affairs Correspondent Jon Henley in 2009 for The Guardian. Social psychologist Alain Samson observed for Henley that [t]he words are also particularly positive, reassuring, in a period of uncertainty, anxiety, even perhaps of cynicism.
Since then, keep calm and carry on exploded as a meme. Everyone from crafters to tweeters have riffed on the slogan. Variations typically follow the template Keep Calm and X: Keep Calm and Drink Tea or Drink Beer, swapping out the crown icon for a teacup or pint glass

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1NK60 - St Michael and All Angels Church stands on Warhill overlooking the village of Mottram in Longdendale, Greater Manchester, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Macclesfield and the deanery of Mottram
The earliest evidence of a church on the site is in 1225 when clergy attached to the church were witnesses to local documents. There is a further reference to the church in a taxation document dated 1291. The present church dates from the end of the 15th century. A major restoration took place in 1854?55 by E. H. Shellard, during which the nave roof was raised
The church is built from local stone quarried from Tinsell-Norr in Perpendicular style. The plan consists of a west tower, a five-bay nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a two-bay chancel and a south porch. At the east end of each aisle is a chapel. The north chapel is known as the Hollingworth Chapel and the south chapel is the Staley Chapel. The tower is in four stages with angled buttresses, a three-light west window above which is a clock face and two-light belfry openings. In one corner is a stair turret. At the top is a castellated parapet with crocketed corner finials.
In the churchyard is a sundial with a dial dated 1811. It consists of a stone shaft with a copper dial and a gnomon. It is listed at Grade II. Also listed at Grade II are the gatepiers, railings, steps and walls of the churchyard. Near the church is a medieval cross which was restored in 1760 and again in 1897, the latter restoration being to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria. The octagonal shaft stands on a stepped circular ashlar plinth. On its top is a cubical sundial with three copper faces. It is listed at Grade II*

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K0GF9E - Penny Lane is a road in the south Liverpool suburb of Mossley Hill. The name also applies to the area surrounding its junction with Smithdown Road and Allerton Road, and to the roundabout at Smithdown Place that was the location for a major bus terminus, originally an important tram junction of Liverpool Corporation Tramways. The roundabout was a frequent stopping place for John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison during their years as schoolchildren and students. Bus journeys via Penny Lane and the area itself subsequently became familiar elements in the early years of the Lennon?McCartney songwriting partnership. In 2009, McCartney reflected:
Penny Lane was kind of nostalgic, but it was really [about] a place that John and I knew ... I'd get a bus to his house and I'd have to change at Penny Lane, or the same with him to me, so we often hung out at that terminus, like a roundabout. It was a place that we both knew, and so we both knew the things that turned up in the story.
Lennon's original lyrics for In My Life had included a reference to Penny Lane. Soon after the Beatles recorded In My Life in October 1965, McCartney mentioned to an interviewer that he wanted to write a song about Penny Lane. A year later, he was spurred to write the song once presented with Lennon's Strawberry Fields Forever. McCartney also cited Dylan Thomas's nostalgic poem Fern Hill as an inspiration for Penny Lane. Lennon co-wrote the lyrics with McCartney. He recalled in a 1970 interview: The bank was there, and that was where the trams sheds were and people waiting and the inspector stood there, the fire engines were down there. It was reliving childhood

The present day ambience of the Albion's interior reflects this translation and has firm connections with the Great War going far beyond the modern ?concept' pub of today.
Mike Mercer has run the Albion Inn for over 37 years and has created and captured the essence of the Great War 1914-18 in this last remaining classic Victorian corner street pub within the City Walls of Chester.
Albion Street, and the adjoining Volunteer Street both lead to the former Drill Hall, which was a recruiting centre during the First World War.
Many a young lad would have spent his King's Shilling in the bar of the Albion before going to face the horrors of the Western Front.
The Albion Inn dates from the late 1880's and Mike and Christina have managed to retain the traditional three room layout covering Vault, Snug and Lounge, containing Great War artefacts and pictures, which give a distinct period feel, together with posters and enamelled advertising signs.
At the same time, The Albion provides high standards of food, drink and accommodation, worthy of its entry in many National and International Guides and Publications.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07A7Y - Whitehall is a road and area in the City of Westminster, Central London. The road forms the first part of the A3212 road from Trafalgar Square to Chelsea. It is the main thoroughfare running south from Trafalgar Square towards Parliament Square. The street is recognised as the centre of the Government of the United Kingdom and is lined with numerous departments and ministries, including the Ministry of Defence, Horse Guards and the Cabinet Office. Consequently, the name Whitehall is used as a metonym for the British civil service and government, and as the geographic name for the surrounding area.
The name was taken from the Palace of Whitehall that was the residence of Kings Henry VIII through to William III, before its destruction by fire in 1698
only the Banqueting House has survived. Whitehall was originally a wide road that led to the front of the palace
the route to the south was widened in the 18th century following the destruction of the palace.
As well as government buildings, the street is known for its memorial statues and monuments, including the UK's primary war memorial, the Cenotaph. South of the Cenotaph the thoroughfare becomes Parliament Street.
The name Whitehall was used for several buildings in the Tudor period. It either referred to a building made of light stone, or as a general term for any festival building. This included the Royal Palace of Whitehall, which in turn gave its name to the street
Numerous London bus routes run along Whitehall, including 12, 24, 88, 159 and 453
Downing Street leads off the south-west end of Whitehall, just above Parliament Street. It was named after Sir George Downing, who built a row of houses along the street around 1680 leading west from Whitehall.
Richmond House, at No. 79, has held the Department of Health since 1987. The building is scheduled to be a temporary debating chamber from 2025, while the Houses of Parliament undergo a refurbishment and modernisation programme

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JH06TD - The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin (grid reference SD656003) is a Church of England parish church in Leigh, Greater Manchester, England. It is a member of the Salford & Leigh deanery in the archdeaconry of Salford, diocese of Manchester. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building.
Leigh was in the Diocese of Lichfield and Coventry until 1541 when it was transferred to the Diocese of Chester. In 1847 Leigh became the only parish in the Hundred of West Derby to be part of the new Diocese of Manchester. Leigh has had its own deanery since 1933. Before that it was part of the deanery of Eccles and prior to that Warrington.
History
St. Mary's is in the centre of Leigh by the Civic Square, which was originally the market place, next to the library and opposite the town hall. The church was mentioned in documents in the 13th century but the date of its foundation is uncertain. The first church on the site, dedicated to St Peter, was described as the Church of Westleigh in Leigh. Its dedication was changed to St Mary the Virgin at the end of the 14th century. The church straddled the ancient boundary between the townships of Westleigh and Pennington, the nave and churchyard in Westleigh and the chancel in Pennington

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JG21XA - The UK cost of living crisis is a period starting in 2021 in which prices for essential goods in the United Kingdom began increasing faster than household income, resulting in a fall in real income. This is caused in part by a rise in inflation in the UK. While all in the UK are affected by rising prices, the impact has been felt most by those with low income. The UK government has responded in various ways, such as by making provision for a ?650 grant for each of the UK's lower income households.
Both global and local factors have contributed to the UK's cost of living crisis. According to Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey, about 80% of the causes driving the cost of living crisis are global. These include the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, an ongoing chip shortage, an energy crisis in 2021?2022, a supply chain crisis in 2021?2022 and Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The UK was reported to be among the worst affected among the world's advanced economies. In 2021, the UK's inflation was less than that of the US, but high US inflation was not generally experienced as a cost of living crisis due to the stimulus cheques that had been distributed to American households. Though in 2022 the cost of living crisis was also reported as being a global phenomenon, having impacts that include those living in the US, across Europe, and as risking an apocalyptic impact for those in the developing world.
Causes unique to the UK include labour shortages related to foreign workers leaving due to Brexit, and additional taxes on households. Factors that have worsened the crisis since 1 April 2022 include Ofgem increasing the household energy price cap by 54%, an increase in National Insurance, and a rise in Council Tax. Household income, whether from wages or benefits, has not generally kept pace with rising prices. In April 2022, UK real wages fell by 4.5%, the sharpest fall since records began back in 2001

To celebrate his stunning achievements, a mural has been unveiled at Silverstone, the home of the British Grand Prix.
Sky Sports F1 - the home of live and exclusive F1 - hired artist James Cochran , who also created the famous David Bowie mural in Brixton - to design the piece to celebrate Hamilton's latest title crown.
The impressive-looking painting displays Hamilton in his Mercedes gear, with the Union Jack acting as a stunning backdrop.
The mural has been emblazoned on a section of a wall at the world famous Silverstone circuit, a track which has seen Sir Lewis Hamilton triumph a record six times.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AE02ND - On World Polio Day, 24th October, thousands of Rotary clubs around the world will hold events and fundraisers to recognize the progress in the global fight to end polio.
Warrington Rotary, as part of its Purple for Polio campaign, and with the support of Warrington Borough Council, intend to mark the occasion by lighting the town hall purple
In 1985, Rotary launched the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication through the mass vaccination of children. Since the first project to vaccinate children polio has been eradicated by 99.9%. Although there is no cure for polio it can be prevented with a vaccine.
Rotary has been joining forces with associations such as the World Health Organization in a battle to reach the remaining endemic countries- Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. Unless polio is eradicated everywhere, within ten years we could see as many as 200,000 new cases annually.
World Polio Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the devastating effects of polio and why Rotary clubs work together to eradicate it from the world.
The first effective attempt to fight polio was made by Jonas Salk in 1955. He and his team created an inactivate vaccine. To honour his work, Rotary International named October 24th as World Polio Day.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M84JKA - The Brazen Head is located on Bridge Street. This is the area from where the original settlement that was to become Dublin got its name.
The Irish name for Dublin is Baile Atha Cliath ? (pronounced: Ball-ya-Awha-Clia) which means The Town of the Ford of the Reed Hurdles.
Beside the pub is the Father Matthew Bridge crosses the river Liffey. It was at this very spot that the original crossing of the river was located. Here reed matting was positioned on the river bed which enabled travellers to cross safely at low tide.
The Brazen Head is Ireland's oldest pub. In fact there has been a hostelry here since 1198. The present building was built in 1754 as a coaching inn. However The Brazen Head appears in documents as far back as 1653.
An advertisement from the 1750's reads Christopher Quinn of The Brazen Head in Bridge Street has fitted said house with neat accommodations and commodious cellars for said business.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MCGA3H - Irishmen and Irishwomen: In the name of God and in the dead generations from which she receives her old tradition of nationhood , Ireland, through us, summons her children to her flag and strikes for her freedom.
Having organised and trained her manhood through her secret revolutionary organisation, the Irish Republican Brotherhood, and through her open military organisations, the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army, having patiently perfected her discipline, having resolutely waited for the right moment to reveal itself, she now seizes that moment, and, supported by her exiled children in America and by gallant allies in Europe, but relying in the first on her own strenght, she strikes in full confidence of victory.
We declare the right of the people of Ireland to the ownership of Ireland and to unfettered control of Irish destinies, to be sovereign and indefeasible. The long usurpation of that right by a foreign people and government has not extinguished the right, nor can it ever be extinguished except by the destruction of the Irish people. In every generation the Irish people have asserted the right to national freedom and sovereingty: six times during the past three hundred years they have asserted it in arms. Standing on that fundamental right and again asserting it in arms in the face of the world, we hereby proclaim the Irish Republic as a Sovereign Independent State, and we pledge our lives and the lives of our comrades-in-arms to the cause of its freedom, of its welfare, and of its exaltation among the nations.
The Irish Republic is entitled to, and hereby claims, the allegiance of every Irishman and Irishwoman. The Republic guarantees religious and eivil liberty, equal rights and equal opportunities to all its citizens, and declares its resolve to persue the happyness and prosperity of the whole nation and of all its parts, cherishing all the children of the nation equally, and oblivious of the differences carefully fostered by an alien govt

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy W42N8R - Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton MBE (born 7 January 1985) is a British racing driver who races in Formula One for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport. A five-time Formula One World Champion, he is often considered the best driver of his generation and widely regarded as one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport. He won his first World Championship title with McLaren in 2008, then moved to Mercedes where he won back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015 before winning back-to-back titles again in 2017 and 2018. The most successful British driver in the history of the sport, Hamilton has more World Championship titles (5) and more race victories (80) than any other British driver in Formula One. He also holds records for the all-time most career points (3,241), the most wins at different circuits, the all-time most pole positions (86) and the most grand slams in a season (3).
Born and raised in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, Hamilton's interest in racing started when his father bought him a radio-controlled car when he was six. He was signed to McLaren's young driver support programme in 1998, after he approached McLaren team principal Ron Dennis at an awards ceremony three years earlier and said one day I want to be racing your cars. After winning the British Formula Renault, Formula 3 Euro Series, and GP2 championships on his way up the racing career ladder, he made his Formula One debut twelve years after his initial encounter with Dennis, driving for McLaren in 2007. Coming from a mixed background, with a black father and white mother, Hamilton is the first and only black driver to race in Formula One

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy R9GRT0 - St Wilfrid's Church is in Church Lane, Grappenhall, a village in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is designated by Historic England as a Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth
The church is Norman in origin, built probably in the earlier part of the 12th century and completed about 1120. This was a small and simple church, consisting of a nave, chancel and, possibly, an apse. The foundations of this church were discovered during the 1873?74 restoration.
A chantry chapel was added by the Boydell family in 1334 in a position where the south aisle now stands. From 1529 the church was largely rebuilt in local sandstone. The old church was demolished and a new nave, chancel, north aisle and a west tower were built. In 1539 the south aisle was added, which incorporated the Boydell chapel. The south porch was added in 1641 and at this time the west wall was strengthened. In 1833 the roof of the nave was raised to form a clerestory and in the 1850s the south aisle was further extended, and a vestry was built. There was a more substantial restoration in 1873?74 by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, which included the provision of new floors and roofs, at a cost of about ?4,000

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK6BN - Formerly the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum was formed as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation to raise funds and manage the memorial's planning and construction. Its board of directors met for the first time on January 4, 2005, and it reached its first-phase capital-fundraising goal ($350 million) in April 2008. This money and additional funds raised will be used to build the memorial and museum and endow the museum.
In 2003, the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation launched the World Trade Center Site Memorial Competition, an international competition to design a memorial at the World Trade Center site to commemorate the lives lost on 9/11. Individuals and teams from around the world submitted design proposals. On November 19, 2003, the thirteen-member jury selected eight finalists. Reflecting Absence, designed by Michael Arad and Peter Walker, was chosen as the winning design on January 6, 2004. It consists of a field of trees interrupted by two large, recessed pools, the footprints of the Twin Towers. The deciduous trees (swamp white oaks) are arranged in rows and form informal clusters, clearings and groves. The park is at street level, above the Memorial Museum. The names of the victims of the attacks (including those from the Pentagon, American Airlines Flight 77, United Airlines Flight 93, and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing) are inscribed on the parapets surrounding the waterfalls in an arrangement of meaningful adjacencies. A portion of the slurry wall originally designed to hold back the Hudson River, about half of what Daniel Libeskind originally wanted to preserve, is maintained in the museum. On January 14, 2004, the final design for the World Trade Center site memorial was unveiled at a press conference in Federal Hall National Memorial

The tower is in three stages, with a Tudor west door, and a four-light west window. It has diagonal west buttresses and square east buttresses. In the middle stage are small windows, above which are clock faces and bell openings. On the summit is a crenellated parapet. The tower is about 76 feet (23 m) high

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM1TF0 - SS Great Britain is a museum ship and former passenger steamship, which was advanced for her time. She was the longest passenger ship in the world from 1845 to 1854. She was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806?1859), for the Great Western Steamship Company's transatlantic service between Bristol and New York. While other ships had been built of iron or equipped with a screw propeller, the Great Britain was the first to combine these features in a large ocean-going ship. She was the first iron steamer to cross the Atlantic, which she did in 1845, in the time of 14 days.
The ship is 322 ft (98 m) in length and has a 3,400-ton displacement. She was powered by two inclined 2 cylinder engines of the direct-acting type, with twin 88 in (220 cm) bore, 6-foot (1.8 m) stroke cylinders. She was also provided with secondary masts for sail power. The four decks provided accommodation for a crew of 120, plus 360 passengers who were provided with cabins, and dining and promenade saloons.
When launched in 1843, Great Britain was by far the largest vessel afloat. But her protracted construction time of six years (1839-1845) and high cost had left her owners in a difficult financial position, and they were forced out of business in 1846, having spent all their remaining funds refloating the ship after she ran aground at Dundrum Bay in County Down near Newcastle in what is now Northern Ireland, after a navigation error. In 1852 she was sold for salvage and repaired. Great Britain later carried thousands of immigrants to Australia from 1852 until being converted to all-sail in 1881. Three years later, she was retired to the Falkland Islands, where she was used as a warehouse, quarantine ship and coal hulk until she was scuttled and sunk in 1937, 98 years since being laid down at the start of her construction.
In 1970, after lying under water and abandoned for 33 years half a world away, Sir Jack Arnold Hayward, OBE (1923-2015) paid for the vessel to be raised and repaired eno

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEW1AK - Murals in Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the region's past and present political and religious divisions.
Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. A mural therefore exists to express an idea or message and could generally be seen as reflecting values held dear to that community.
In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands
murals of international solidarity with revolutionary groups are equally common, as are those which highlight a particular issue, for example the Ballymurphy Massacre or the McGurk's Bar bombing. In working class unionist communities, murals are used to promote Ulster loyalist paramilitary groups such as the Ulster Defence Association and Ulster Volunteer Force and commemorate their deceased members. However traditional themes such as William III of England and the Battle of the Boyne, the Battle of the Somme and the 36th Ulster Division are equally common

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDEYNC - Since the onset of the Troubles in 1971, Nationalist and Loyalist communities throughout Northern Ireland have been divided by Peace Walls. These large stone and steel constructions were designed to protect neighbourhoods from sporadic attacks and retain a sense of peace and protection.
Of the city's 17 walls, West Belfast's sections are the most visited. Once in the area it's easy to determine which side of the divide you're on: red, white and blue kerbstones, Loyalist murals and Union Jacks indicate you're on the Shankill. If the kerbs are green, white and gold, the flag is Irish and the murals are Republican, you're on the Falls.
You can cross from one side to the other via access roads at Lanark Way and Northumberland Street. These roads close in times of heightened tension, which may well be the case during the marching season (see The Twelfth).

The Shankill Protestant Boys Flute Band?or as they are more famously known now?The SPB?were formed in the Shankill area in 1980. The reasons for forming the band were much more than simply establishing another flute band?the Shankill had many at that time. The men behind the formation had other ideas. They wanted to promote and express their Protestant culture and also remember the brave Volunteers and Servicemen who had fought and died during two World Wars?in particular during the Somme offensive?and to remember those in more recent times who perished during the conflict in the war against violent Republicanism.
Sadly many of those who served the band since their beginnings 33 years ago are no longer with us?either passed away or in many instances murdered. However of the original founders around ten remain. Some, remarkably are still marching while others retain honorary membership. Gary Lenaghan? The Hunters?Harold Reynolds-The Young's?The Freel's?John McQuade?Derek Mawhinney? The Finlay's were all there at the start and remain heavily involved today.
The SPB were the first flute band to receive and carry the colours of the 1st Battalion of the Ulster Volunteer Force?in 1982?and to this day carry those colours with pride and dignity. It is a commonly known fact that these colours are carried on ALL occasions?at no time are they excluded?and in the past this has caused some difficulties?with both the Police and indeed with certain sections of the Loyal Orders. At one stage during the Eighties the band came into conflict with the Scottish Orange Institution which forced the band off the road because of their refusal to parade without their beloved colours. Since then the SPB have not walked in Scotland with the Orange.
Around the same time and with the concept of the Supergrass system being implemented the band became heavily involved with Families For Legal Rights. For ma

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GGWH4B - Liverpool Town Hall stands in High Street at its junction with Dale Street, Castle Street, and Water Street in Liverpool, Merseyside, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building, and described in the list as one of the finest surviving 18th-century town halls. The authors of the Buildings of England series refer to its magnificent scale, and consider it to be probably the grandest ...suite of civic rooms in the country, and an outstanding and complete example of late Georgian decoration.
It is not an administrative building but a civic suite, Lord Mayor's parlour and Council chamber
local government administration is centred at the nearby Municipal Buildings. The town hall was built between 1749 and 1754 to a design by John Wood the Elder replacing an earlier town hall nearby. An extension to the north designed by James Wyatt was added in 1785. Following a fire in 1795 the hall was largely rebuilt and a dome designed by Wyatt was built. Minor alterations have subsequently been made. The streets surrounding its site have altered since its initiation, notably when viewed from Castle Street, the south-side, it appears as off-centre. This is because Water Street which ran to the junction with Dale Street, the west-east axis, was continuous and built up across the junction so that the Town Hall was not visible originally from that aspect. The structures were removed 150 years after this to expose the building from this position.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9DKK - Lichfield Cathedral is situated in Lichfield, Staffordshire, England. It is the only medieval English cathedral with three spires. The Diocese of Lichfield covers all of Staffordshire, much of Shropshire and part of the Black Country and West Midlands. The present bishop is the Right Reverend Jonathan Gledhill, the 98th Lord Bishop of Lichfield.
The cathedral is dedicated to St Chad and Saint Mary. Its internal length is 113 metres (370 feet), and the breadth of the nave is 21m (68'). The central spire is 77m (252') high and the western spires are about 58m (190').
The stone is sandstone and came from a quarry on the south side of Lichfield. The walls of the nave lean outwards slightly, due to the weight of stone used in the ceiling vaulting
some 200?300 tons of which was removed during renovation work to prevent the walls leaning further.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXKNX - LGBT Warrington is organised by LGBT members who are all volunteers. The group has built great relationships with partners, which include the Council, police, health and local businesses.
They are here to help and welcome anyone who would like to join us to stamp out the stigma people may have on the LGBT community.
The group offers support to those who need it on a 1-2-1 basis and is treated with great confidentiality, and point people in the right direction of the services they require.
They meet throughout the year mainly to have a brew and chat about life in general, to meet and make new friends, and for those who require extra support, to help by signposting to relevant services in Warrington. We also at times hold activities such as bowling, theatre trips, quizzes and games.
They also have nights out in the town centre at Cotton Mill or Show Bar and take part with events they are holding, or even have the odd night out to Manchester to Canal Street or to the theatre.
During the year they are also visited by guest speakers.
They welcome visitors and potential new members whatever their sexuality, though is open to 18+ only.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEEFED - Murals in Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the region's past and present political and religious divisions.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4447528033 - 'The Scottish Parliament Office Building. As important as the St Andrews cross to many people in the far north of the UK and strangely linked by a Hexadecimal number '0065BD'. Although I have heard it said that folk in the far islands of the north and west feel as distant from Holyrood as from Westminster. Living in north west england I can identify a little with that sentiment.
A saltire, Saint Andrew's Cross, or crux decussata is said to be the one on which St Andrew was martyred. The Cross of Burgundy contains a varient too. It is quite common to see it flying from Scottish Government buildings every day from 8am until sunset. Its use appears to date from around 1180. Although it was the Parliament of Scotland that decreed in 1385 that Scottish soldiers wear a white Saint Andrew's Cross on their person. This was both front and back to identify them.
The blues used varied on shades of dyes etc and many variations evolved over the years. There were calls to standardise the shade of blue. In 2003 a committee of the Scottish Parliament met to examine a petition that the Scottish Government adopt the Pantone 300 colour as a standard. How very Photoshop(!) This blue is of a lighter shade than the Pantone 280 of the Union Jack Flag. Having taken advice from a number of sources, including the office of the Lord Lyon King of Arms, the committee recommended that the optimum shade of blue for the Saltire be Pantone 300. Nurds and pub quiz experts may want to know that Pantone 300 is #0065BD expressed as hexadecimal web colours.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTK73J - Poljot (literally meaning flight), is a brand of Soviet/Russian wristwatches, produced since 1964 by the First Moscow Watch Factory (Russian: ???????? ????????????? ?????????? ????????, ????????, Perviy Moskovskiy Chasovoy Zavod). The flagship brand of the USSR's watch industry, Poljot produced numerous historical watches used in many important space missions, including the world's first space watch worn by Yuri Gagarin.
Founded in 1930 under orders from Joseph Stalin, the First State Watch Factory was the first large scale Soviet watch and mechanical movement manufacturer. Via its USA-based trading company Amtorg, the Soviet government bought the defunct Ansonia Clock Company of Brooklyn, New York in 1929, and the Dueber-Hampden Watch Company of Canton, Ohio. As part of the Soviet's first five-year plan, twenty-eight freight cars worth of machinery and parts were moved from the USA to Moscow

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEW1H9 - Murals in Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the region's past and present political and religious divisions.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBKW - The White Rose of York (Latinised as rosa alba, blazoned as a rose argent) is a white heraldic rose which was adopted in the 14th century as a heraldic badge of the royal House of York. In modern times it is used more broadly as a symbol of Yorkshire.
The symbolism of the white rose has religious connotations as (like the white lily) it represents the purity of the Virgin Mary, one of whose many titles in the Roman Catholic faith is the Mystical Rose of Heaven. In Christian liturgical iconography white is the symbol of light, typifying innocence, purity, joy and glory.
The white rose was first adopted as a heraldic badge by Edmund of Langley, 1st Duke of York (1341?1402), the fourth surviving son of King Edward III of England. One of his elder brothers, John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster (1340?1399) adopted a red rose as a heraldic badge, the red rose of Lancaster. Their respective descendants fought for control of the throne of England during several decades of civil warfare, which became known as the Wars of the Roses, after the badges of the two competing cadet royal houses.
The Tudor Rose of England
The Wars of the Roses were ended by King Henry VII of England who, upon marrying Elizabeth of York, symbolically but not politically, united the White and Red Roses to create the Tudor Rose, the symbol of the English Monarchy. In the late 17th century the Jacobites took up the White Rose of York as their emblem, celebrating White Rose Day on 10 June, the anniversary of the birth of The Old Pretender in 1688
In heraldry The Rose of York is blazoned as A rose argent barbed and seeded proper (a white rose with sepals and seeds in their natural colours). According to the College of Heralds, the heraldic rose may be used with either a petal at the top or if slightly rotated with a sepal at the top. Traditionally the rose is displayed with a petal at the top in the North Riding and West Riding but with a sepal at the top in the East Riding of Yorkshire

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JG21XE - The UK cost of living crisis is a period starting in 2021 in which prices for essential goods in the United Kingdom began increasing faster than household income, resulting in a fall in real income.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GGWHBR - Liverpool Town Hall stands in High Street at its junction with Dale Street, Castle Street, and Water Street in Liverpool, Merseyside, England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DE9AP0 - The Bridgewater Canal connects Runcorn, Manchester and Leigh, in North West England. It was commissioned by Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, to transport coal from his mines in Worsley to Manchester. It was opened in 1761 from Worsley to Manchester, and later extended from Manchester to Runcorn, and then from Worsley to Leigh.
The canal is connected to the Manchester Ship Canal via a lock at Cornbrook
to the Rochdale Canal in Manchester
to the Trent and Mersey Canal at Preston Brook, southeast of Runcorn
and to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Leigh. It once connected with the River Mersey at Runcorn but has since been cut off by a slip road to the Silver Jubilee Bridge.
Often considered to be the first true canal in England, it required the construction of an aqueduct to cross the River Irwell, one of the first of its kind. Its success helped inspire a period of intense canal building in Britain, known as canal mania. It later faced intense competition from the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and the Macclesfield Canal. Navigable throughout its history, it is one of the few canals in Britain not to have been nationalised, and remains privately owned. Pleasure craft now use the canal which forms part of the Cheshire Ring network of canals.
