Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ECEE02 - An opened pot of Patum Peperium The Gentleman's Relish is shown beside a silver spreading knife on a fish-patterned cloth, creating a useful editorial food image of a once familiar but increasingly rare British savoury spread. Gentleman's Relish is a strongly flavoured anchovy paste, traditionally used sparingly on hot buttered toast, crackers, sandwiches or savouries, with a salty, fishy and umami character that has always made it a classic acquired taste. First created in 1828 by Englishman John Osborn, the product became part of British pantry history, associated with Victorian food culture, gentlemen's clubs, breakfast tables and old-fashioned after-dinner savouries. The visible Patum Peperium lid, peeled foil seal, opened plastic tub and fish-themed background make the photograph commercially useful for stories about heritage foods, nostalgic grocery brands, discontinued products, changing tastes, supermarket ranges and the survival of eccentric British food traditions. In April 2026, reports said AB World Foods had stopped production because the spread was no longer commercially viable, prompting disappointment from loyal fans and interest in whether another producer might revive the brand. The image can illustrate food manufacturing decisions, declining demand for niche condiments, anchovy paste, preserved fish, secret recipes, retro packaging, recipe nostalgia and the way small everyday products can carry surprising cultural memory. It also works for features on strong flavours, salt-heavy foods, seafood spreads, British culinary oddities and the contrast between modern convenience food and older, more pungent pantry staples. As a documentary stock image, it records the opened product at the point of use, with label, texture and serving context visible, giving buyers a clear visual for articles about the disappearance, scarcity or possible revival of Gentleman's Relish.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ECEE1J - Patum Peperium The Gentleman's Relish is shown spread on hot toast beside its opened pot, making a strong editorial food image of one of Britain's most distinctive savoury condiments. The traditional spread is made from salted anchovies, butter, rusk, water, salt and spices, giving it an intense salty, fishy and deeply savoury flavour that is usually used very sparingly. First created in 1828 by Englishman John Osborn, Gentleman's Relish became associated with Victorian and Edwardian food culture, gentlemen's clubs, breakfast tables, savouries after dinner, and old-fashioned British pantry products. The opened container, foil lid, product label and toast on a white plate make the photograph useful for illustrating British culinary history, nostalgic foods, heritage brands, acquired tastes, preserved fish, anchovy paste, retro groceries and changing consumer habits. It can also support current stories about discontinued traditional products, food manufacturing decisions, declining demand for once-familiar brands, and the way strongly flavoured old British foods survive through loyal enthusiasts, specialist shops and restaurant revivals. The label's delicious on hot toast message is clearly reflected in the image, with the brown relish melting into crisp toasted bread. The scene is commercially useful for articles on comfort food, savoury snacks, umami flavours, breakfast habits, English eccentricity, food nostalgia, supermarket ranges, speciality condiments, recipe ideas and the cultural divide between loved and disliked traditional foods. Although visually simple, the image carries strong context because Gentleman's Relish has a long history, a memorable name and a flavour profile that links it to potted fish, anchovy butter and intense savoury seasoning rather than sweet breakfast spreads. As a documentary stock image, it records a recognisable British food product at the point of use, with packaging and serving suggestion visible in the same frame.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3BKDJGJ - The exterior of Rory's Fishing Tackle, a long-established specialist fishing and angling shop located in the Temple Bar area of Dublin city centre, Ireland. The image shows the premises closed, with metal shutters pulled down and decorated with painted fishing-themed artwork, including fish and angling imagery.
Temple Bar is best known as Dublin's cultural and nightlife quarter, but it has also historically been home to small independent retailers serving niche interests such as fishing, music, and crafts. Shops like Rory's Fishing Tackle reflect an earlier phase of the area's commercial life, prior to its transformation into a tourism- and hospitality-led district.
The red brick corner building and layered signage give the scene a slightly timeworn appearance, capturing the impact of changing retail patterns, rising rents, and shifting economic priorities in Dublin's city centre. The closed shopfront stands as a visual marker of the challenges faced by specialist independent retailers in high-profile urban locations.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating Dublin retail change, independent businesses, urban decline and regeneration, specialist shops, angling culture in Ireland, and the evolving character of Temple Bar beyond its tourist image.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RW3WYD - The origins of the pub go back to 1723 when it opened as the Dock and Duck reflecting the more country pastimes of the area. However when the British Museum was built in the 1760s, the owners decided to change the name to the British Museum Tavern in 1762 and in 1858 after a refit it became the Museum Tavern
The refit was overseen by architect William Finch Hill who was best known for his designs for Music Halls, much of his design still remains.
It's position at the entrance to the British Museum means it has for centuries been a favourite port of call for the many visitors, academics and workers in the area.
When the British Library was inside of the British Museum it attracted the great minds and thinkers, a regular user was Karl Marx and it has been said that the Museum Tavern was his local' whilst he was rewriting history.
Other famous visitors to the Tavern have included Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and J. B. Priestley.
There is no doubt even up to the present day a wide range of people have frequented the Museum Tavern which is part of its charm, it is a traditional London pub owned by Taylor Walker Brewery with real ales on tap and traditional food being served.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NAWFMR - A fish and chip shop, sometimes referred to as a chip shop, is a (often fast food) restaurant that specialises in selling fish and chips. Usually, fish and chip shops provide takeaway service, although some have seating facilities. Fish and chip shops may also sell other foods, including variations on their core offering such as battered sausage and burgers, to regional cuisine such as Greek or Indian food.
Variations on the name include fish bar, fishery (in Yorkshire), fish shop and chip shop. In the United Kingdom including Northern Ireland, they are colloquially known as a chippy or fishy, while in the rest of Ireland and the Aberdeen area, they are known as chippers.
The word chip-shop is first recorded by the Oxford English Dictionary in 1953. Chippy or chippie was first recorded in 1961. Occasionally the type of fish will be specified, as in 'Cod-n-Chips'.
In Scotland, the fish tends to be haddock, whereas in England it tends to be cod. This is because both fish tend to be sourced from Scottish waters in the North Sea and then shipped around the UK. Haddock was thought to taste better than cod when fresh, while cod tasted better a few days later. In the days before refrigerated haulage this meant that haddock would taste bad by the time it made it out of Scotland, while the cod would still taste good if it took a few days to reach its destination. Hake, pollock, whiting, and plaice are also seen at many chip shops. In Scotland, 'special fish' is a variant where the haddock is breadcrumbed instead of battered.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M9F1T7 - Kalles Kaviar (known as Kallen Mätitahna in Finland) is a Swedish brand of smörgåskaviar.
It is manufactured by Abba Seafood. Kalles Kaviar is mainly made of salted cod roe (Gadus morhua), sugar, canola oil and spices. It is officially credited as having been introduced in 1954, but probably existed even earlier as advertisment for the product appeared in newspapers as early as 1950. The product soon became considered a classic product in the Swedish market, internationally recognised as a Swedish product.
The tube label has maintained the same design from the beginning, and depicts the son of the then-CEO of the manufacturing company, Carl Ameln. The name Kalle was used because it was a popular name in the 1950s when it was first created.
The tube had to be made of aluminium rather than plastic because kaviar cannot stay fresh when in contact with air, and plastic tubes become filled with air when the contents have been squeezed out, whereas aluminium remains in the form it was pressed into.
In 2011, IKEA replaced Kalles Kaviar with its own brand of caviar. This led to backlash, leading to IKEA returning the product to its shelves within a few years

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHKXYF - Nature's most accomplished fisherman, the grey heron is known for its motionless stance at the water's edge.
In fact, this graceful pose is most frequently seen replicated by imitation herons, procured to guard the contents of ornamental fishponds. However, heron enthusiasts can spot the real thing waiting patiently for prey on waterways up and down the country.
Grey herons are prevalent throughout Europe, Africa and also in Asia. They typically breed in woodland areas that are close to the water and can be spotted around lakes, estuaries, ponds, rivers and even coastal marshes. Herons are adaptable birds and will feed in any water, be it fresh, salt, clear or muddy, so long as it will yield a catch.
Herons can stand for several minutes with their necks tensed, waiting for an unsuspecting fish to swim into reach. Alternatively, they will stalk the shallows searching for food. Then, quick as a flash, they will dart down and spear the prey with their long dagger-like bill.
The grey heron is the only member of the heron family to be commonly found in Britain. You will be lucky to catch a glimpse of the bittern, which is very scarce, or the egret, which is a rare visitor. Thankfully, the grey heron population is doing well in the UK and is more abundant now than ever before, despite the ever-present danger of starvation over the cold winter months.
Appearance: Large and long-legged with an S-shaped neck. The back and wings are coloured grey, and the neck and under-parts are white. Herons have white heads, black wispy crests and a long, pointed yellow bill
Size: 84-102cm in length, 155-175cm wingspan
Weight: 1,500-2,000g
Lifespan: Maximum 25 years
Diet: Primarily fish and amphibians. However, herons can also feed on small rodents, reptiles and birds
Family: Ardeidae

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHKXYJ - Herons are long-legged, long-necked, freshwater and coastal birds in the family Ardeidae, with 64 recognised species, some of which are referred to as egrets or bitterns rather than herons. Members of the genera Botaurus and Ixobrychus are referred to as bitterns, and, together with the zigzag heron, or zigzag bittern, in the monotypic genus Zebrilus, form a monophyletic group within the Ardeidae. Egrets do not form a biologically distinct group from herons, and tend to be named differently because they are mainly white or have decorative plumes in breeding plumage. Herons, by evolutionary adaptation, have long beaks.
The classification of the individual heron/egret species is fraught with difficulty, and no clear consensus exists about the correct placement of many species into either of the two major genera, Ardea and Egretta. Similarly, the relationships of the genera in the family are not completely resolved. However, one species formerly considered to constitute a separate monotypic family, the Cochlearidae or the boat-billed heron, is now regarded as a member of the Ardeidae.
Although herons resemble birds in some other families, such as the storks, ibises, spoonbills, and cranes, they differ from these in flying with their necks retracted, not outstretched. They are also one of the bird groups that have powder down. Some members of this group nest colonially in trees

The 2014 Celfwaith commission to create a climbing wall was part of a major refurbishment scheme on Barry Island, including structural works to the Eastern end of the Promenade
Early in 2014 Celfwaith appointed Becky Adams to collaborate on consultation meetings and workshops with youth groups at Area 41 and Barry Island, pupils at Barry Island Primary School, and the Barry Island Historical Society.
Gordon Young was appointed to create the climbing wall and had previous experience of creating climbing and bouldering structures in Blackpool. However, his proposal for Barry Island was completely different and captured the fun, colourful and tongue-in-cheek character of the place popularised by Gavin & Stacey.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MG40FR - Angling is a fishing technique that uses a fish hook or angle (from Old English angol) attached to a fishing line to tether individual fish in the mouth. The fishing line is usually manipulated via a fishing rod, although rodless techniques such as handlining and longlining also exist. Modern angling rods are usually fitted with a reel that functions as a cranking device for storing, retrieving and releasing out the line, although Tenkara fishing and cane pole fishing are two rod-angling methods that do not use any reel. The hook itself can be additionally weighted with a dense tackle called a sinker, and is typically dressed with an appetizing bait to attract the fish and enticing it into swallowing the hook, but sometimes an inedible fake bait with multiple attached hooks (known as a lure) is used instead of a single hook with edible bait. A bite indicator, such as a float or a quiver tip, is often used to relay underwater status of the hook to the surface.
When angling, the fisherman (known as the angler) will first throw the hook (i.e. cast) to a chosen area of water, and then patiently wait for fish to attack and eat the hookbait. It is also not uncommon for the angler to scatter some loose bait (groundbait) around the spot before even casting the hook, in order to better attract fish with scents. If a fish has succumbed to its own feeding instinct and swallowed the hook (i.e. bite or strike), the hook point will pierce into and anchor itself inside the fish mouth, gullet or gill, and the fish in turn becomes firmly tethered to the fishing rod via the fishing line. Once the fish is hooked (often colloquially called fish-on), any struggles and attempts to escape will pull along the line, causing the bite indicator to signal the angler, who jerks the rod to further secure the hook anchorage (i.e. setting the hook) and then tries to retrieve the line back, pulling the fish closer in the process.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RGGE55 - The Collegiate Church of St. Stephan, known in German as St. Stephan zu Mainz, is a Gothic hall collegiate church located in the German city of Mainz. It is known for windows created by Marc Chagall.
St. Stephan was originally built in 990 at the order of Archbishop Willigis, who also initiated the building of Mainz Cathedral. The church was founded on top of the highest hill in the town, most likely on behalf of Theophanu, the widow of Otto II, Holy Roman Emperor. Willigis intended the church to be a site of prayer for the Empire.
The provost of the Collegiate Church administered one of the archdiaconates (a medieval organizational form similar to today's diaconates) of the Archbishopric of Mainz.
The current church building dates from the late medieval era
construction of the main area of the church began in about 1267 and was completed in 1340. The successional building kept the guidelines of the floor plan of the original Willigis building and with it the design as a double choir church. St. Stephan is the oldest Gothic hall church in the Upper Rhine district, and is (besides Mainz Cathedral) the most important church in the city of Mainz.
View of the Gothic cloister of St. Stephan, rebuilt 1968-71 after heavy destruction in World War II
Only a few changes have been made to the church since the 14th century. The cloister, for instance, was added between 1462 and 1499 to the southern side of the church, and the outer face of the church was updated during the Baroque period. In 1857 a great explosion in a nearby powder magazine (Mainz was a federal fortress in the 19th century) destroyed the baroque facing of the church.
St. Stephan was heavily damaged in the cause of the bombing of Mainz in World War II. The cloister was heavily damaged and was rebuilt between 1968 and 1971
the restoration of the huge western belfry was also completed at that time, albeit with some difficulty.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P4HWNT - Pescetarianism or pescatarianism is the practice of adhering to a diet that incorporates seafood as the only source of meat in an otherwise vegetarian diet. Most pescetarians are ovo-lacto vegetarians who eat seafood along with dairy products and eggs, often colloquially defined as fish but no other meat. Vegetarian groups have had to clarify that pescetarian diets fall outside of the range of vegetarianism.
In 2018, Ipsos MORI reported 73% of people followed a conventional pattern diet where both meat and non-animal products were regularly consumed, with 14% considered as flexitarians, 5% vegetarians, 3% vegans, and 3% pescetarians. A 2018 poll of 2,000 United Kingdom adults found that 12% of adults adhered to a meat free diet, with 2% vegan, 6-7% ovo-lacto-vegetarian, and 4% pescetarian.
Plant foods, such as fresh produce, make up most of a pescetarian diet
Seafoods are part of a pescetarian diet
As a plant-based diet, pescetarianism is similar to many traditional diets emphasizing plant foods as well as seafood. Regular fish consumption and decreased red meat consumption are recognized as dietary practices that may promote health

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DHGYWH - In 1848, John Eglington, a local surveyor, valued the estate at £160,000. In the 1860s, E. A. Foden first mooted the idea of turning the estate into a park and in 1871, the Walsall Arboretum and Lake Company was formed and issued a prospectus for shareholders describing the principal features.
In 1873, a lease was drawn up for the creating of a park and the flooding of more land. The Arboretum was officially opened on May 4, 1874 by Lady Hatherton. The park consisted of two lakes, two lodges, a boathouse, bandstand, several summerhouses, a tree lined promenade, space for dancing, a flagpole, croquet lawns and a cricket ground. On May 20, 1875, severe weather caused extensive damage to the lake area.
In 1965, exploration began for underground tunnels connecting the Littleton Street mine workings, however none were found. In 1967, proposals for a new roundabout and flyover scheme that would have demolished the Clock Tower and lodge were rejected due to public pressure. In 1972, a proposal by Featherstone-Dilke to construct housing on the northern edge of the park was rejected following a public enquiry. On April 19, 1989, 31.32ha of land consisting of the original Arboretum and surrounding housing was designated a conservation area.[1]
In 1995, a Charter Mark was awarded to the Arboretum for excellence and diversity in the services it offered. It was re-awarded in 1999 and in the same year, a rare species of white-clawed crayfish was discovered in Hatherton Lake

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DED1G7 - A popular story in Edinburgh is that of Margaret (or Maggie) Dickson, a fishwife from Musselburgh, whose husband left, possibly press-ganged, to join the Royal Navy. Maggie had gone to work in an inn in the Borders, and was hanged in the Grassmarket in August 1724, at the age of 22 or 23, by hangman John Dalgliesh for murdering her illegitimate baby there by drowning it or placing it in the river Tweed at Kelso, shortly after the birth. After the hanging, a doctor declared Dickson dead, and her family argued with the medical students, who then were only allowed to dissect criminal corpses, so her body was taken back to Musselburgh on a cart. However, on the way there, the story was that her family went for a wake at an inn (possibly Sheep's Heid Inn, Duddingston) when they heard noises from the coffin as she awoke. Under Scots Law, her punishment had been carried out, so she could not be executed for a second time for the same crime (only later were the words until dead added to the sentence of hanging). Her resurrection was also to some extent seen as divine intervention, and so she was allowed to go free. In later life (and legend), she was referred to as hauf-hingit Maggie and attracted curiosity as she was seen back in the Grass-market in October 1724, with an item about a crowd forming to see her in the Scots Magazine. She remarried her husband (as death' had parted them) and lived another 40 years.
A poem in Scots appears in a book Quines by actress Gerda Stevenson

The Abbey of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Tewkesbury, in the English county of Gloucestershire, is the second largest parish church in the country and a former Benedictine monastery. It is one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in Britain, and has probably the largest Romanesque crossing tower in Europe.
In the 10th century the religious foundation at Tewkesbury became a priory subordinate to the Benedictine Cranbourne Abbey in Dorset. In 1087, William the Conqueror gave the manor of Tewkesbury to his cousin, Robert Fitzhamon, who, with Giraldus, Abbot of Cranbourne, founded the present abbey in 1092. Building of the present Abbey church did not start until 1102, employing Caen stone imported from Normandy and floated up the Severn.
After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the people of Tewkesbury saved the abbey from destruction in 1539: Insisting it was their parish church, which they had the right to keep, they bought it from King Henry VIII for the value of its bells and lead roof which would have been salvaged and melted down, leaving the structure a roofless ruin. The price came to £453 (£193,780 as of 2013).
The Abbey's 17th century organ - known as the Milton Organ - was originally made for Magdalen College, Oxford by Robert Dallam. After the English Civil War it was removed to the chapel of Hampton Court Palace and came to Tewkesbury in 1737. Since then, it has undergone several major rebuilds.

St Paul's Cathedral, London, is a Church of England cathedral and seat of the Bishop of London. Its dedication to Paul the Apostle dates back to the original church on this site, founded in AD 604. St Paul's sits at the top of Ludgate Hill, the highest point in the City of London, and is the mother church of the Diocese of London. The present church dating from the late 17th century was built to an English Baroque design of Sir Christopher Wren, as part of a major rebuilding program which took place in the city after the Great Fire of London, and was completed within his lifetime.
The cathedral is one of the most famous and most recognisable sights of London, with its dome, framed by the spires of Wren's City churches, dominating the skyline for 300 years. At 365 feet (111 m) high, it was the tallest building in London from 1710 to 1962, and its dome is also among the highest in the world. In terms of area, St Paul's is the second largest church building in the United Kingdom after Liverpool Cathedral.
St Paul's Cathedral occupies a significant place in the national identity of the English population. It is the central subject of much promotional material, as well as postcard images of the dome standing tall, surrounded by the smoke and fire of the Blitz. Important services held at St Paul's include the funerals of Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington and Sir Winston Churchill
Jubilee celebrations for Queen Victoria
peace services marking the end of the First and Second World Wars
the wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Lady Diana Spencer, the launch of the Festival of Britain and the thanksgiving services for the Golden Jubilee, the 80th Birthday and the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II. St Paul's Cathedral is a busy working church, with hourly prayer and daily services.

Jodrell Bank is a world leader in radio astronomy-related research and technology development but also carries out research across the electromagnetic spectrum and in theoretical topics. It was first in the west to track the Russian USSR Luna 1 probe.
While the early warning radars at Fylingdales Moor were being constructed Jodrell Bank was held in a sort of readiness to track Soviet ICBM:s by using the big antenna as a radar. The radar tracking of the Sputnik rocket bodies (and later Sputnik 3 itself) demonstrated that the telescope had the capability to detect missiles at great range and the telescope was given an interim ballistic missile early warning role. Presumably also this effort provided some much needed funding for the telescope.
The Centre occupies three main locations: the world-famous Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire (shown here in panorama form, original dimensions 7332x3666pixels), and the Alan Turing and Sackville St Buildings in central Manchester.
The Lovell Telescope has stood proudly over the Cheshire Plain since its completion in 1957 and is the flagship of the Jodrell Bank Observatory. The observatory is a place of learning, teaching and research for the many engineers, astronomers and students who develop and use the radio telescopes here.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5076530742 - 'A Northern Soul - 'The Verve' - Play this track here.
¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
Released June 1995, A Northern Soul is the second studio album by English rock band The Verve. The title is a reference to Northern Soul, a popular soul movement in Britain during the 1960s at which Wigan (The Wigan casino) was near its epicentre.
The Verve formed in 1990 in Wigan with Richard Ashcroft on vox, guitarist Nick McCabe, bassist Simon Jones, and drummer Peter Salisbury. Simon Tong later became a member. Beginning with a psychedelic sound indebted to shoegazing and space rock, by the mid-1990s the band had released several EPs and three albums.
I had first heard a track from their first album on a magazine compilation and was then hooked.
For this 2nd album the band de-camped to their Wigan-based practice room to begin writing and recording songs for their second studio album. Commenting on the effect that working in the 'dank rehearsal room' had on the band's songwriting process, frontman Richard Ashcroft stated:
'Practising in a dungeon in Wigan for this record, you're devoid of any kind of fashion, or thought of 'This is what we should be doing'. Like a band that goes into the studio and plays the music they hear in their heads rather than what they read in magazines'.
Critical acclaim was heaped upon the album (justifyably). Guitar Magazine writer Dan Eccleston claimed 'the band retreated to their Wigan rehearsal room and plugged in, tuned up and flipped out into that parallel universe wherein the Verve song resides. And the result is A Northern Soul - a record whose deep, dark funky rock makes their actually rather lovely '93 debut A Storm in Heaven sound almost limp. The Verve essence remains - swirling guitar arpeggios, grand rock themes, sprawling structures - but it's warmer, denser and more powerful in every way.'
If you like this track, this album or Urban Hymms which followed it should be your starting point. Tell 'em I sent you!

Just when you thought pipes were so yesterday.....
One of my favourite tracks, good to hear it today!
'Hash Pipe' is a song by US indie rock band Weezer. Released in 2001, it was the first single off the band's long-awaited third album, Weezer (The Green Album).
The song was aparently inspired by a male transvestite prostitute known for rambling to people in Santa Monica. Weezer drummer Patrick Wilson is featured on the cover of the song's CD single holding a pack of Natural American Spirit cigarettes that has been blurred out due to copyright issues.

The new white Samuel Beckett Bridge (Irish: Droichead Samuel Beckett) is a cable-stayed bridge in Dublin that joins Sir John Rogerson's Quay on the south side of the River Liffey to Guild Street and North Wall Quay in the Docklands area.
The architect is Santiago Calatrava, a designer of a number of innovative bridges and buildings. This is the second bridge in the area designed by Calatrava, the first being the James Joyce Bridge, which is further upstream.
Constructed by a 'Graham Hollandia Joint Venture', the main span of the Samuel Beckett Bridge is supported by 31 cable stays from a doubly back-stayed single forward arc tubular tapered spar, with decking provided for four traffic and two pedestrian lanes. It is also capable of opening through an angle of 90 degrees allowing ships to pass through. This is achieved through a rotational mechanism housed in the base of the pylon.
The shape of the spar and its cables is said to evoke an image of a harp, a symbol of Ireland lying on its edge.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4846909105 - 'Very local to me, Chester city cathedral is the mother church of the Church of the Diocese of Chester, and is located in the administrative walled city. The cathedral, formerly St Werburgh's abbey church of a Benedictine monastery, is dedicated to Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Since 1541 it has been the centre of worship, administration, ceremony and music for the city and diocese.
The cathedral is a Grade I listed building, and the heritage site, including the former monastic buildings, lying to the north of the cathedral is also listed Grade I. The cathedral, typical of English cathedrals in having been modified many times, dates from between 1093 and the early 1500s, although the site itself may have been used for Christian worship since Roman times. All the major styles of English medieval architecture, from Norman to Perpendicular are represented in the present building.
The cathedral and monastic buildings were extensively restored during the 19th century amidst some controversy, and a free-standing bell-tower was added in the 20th century. The buildings are a major tourist attraction in Chester, a city of historic, cultural and architectural importance. In addition to holding services for Christian worship, the cathedral is used as a venue for concerts and exhibitions.
The city of Chester was an important Roman stronghold (Deva). There may have been a Christian basilica on the site of the present cathedral in the late Roman era, while Chester was controlled by Legio XX Valeria Victrix. Legend holds that the basilica was dedicated to St Paul and St Peter. This is supported by evidence that in Saxon times the dedication of an early chapel on this site was changed from St Peter to St Werburgh. In the 10th century, St Werburgh's remains were brought to Chester, and 907 AD her shrine was placed in the church.
The interior of Chester Cathedral gives a warm and mellow appearance because of the pinkish colour of the sandstone. The proportions appear spacious because the view from the west end of the nave to the east end is unimpeded by a pulpitum and the nave, although not long, is both wide and high compared with many of England's cathedrals. The piers of the nave and choir are widely spaced, those of the nave carrying only the clerestory of large windows with no triforium gallery. The proportions are made possible partly because the ornate stellar vault, like that at York Minster, is of wood, not stone.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4574527758 - 'Lucky Pete outside his traditional british chippy at 4 Winnington Lane, Northwich, Cheshire. I have had a few chip suppers from Petes when photographing gigs and bands just down the road at the w=33062170@N08\'>Winnington Park Rec'. I can recommend his fish in cajun spiced batter, just have some lager at the ready! His sign states 'Simply The Best Chippy In Winnington'. That cannot be denied as he has the 'only' chippy in Winnington, however he does do top chips!
Fish and chips, often referred to as national takeaway food of these islands originated in the victorian era. It is pretty much everywhere and even in rural areas, like Cornwall or Mull, it often arrives by mobile van in the evening. Around 1860, it is legend that the first fish and chip shop was opened in London by Jewish proprietor Joseph Malin who married together 'fish fried in the Jewish fashion' with thick chiped potatoes. In 1863 the chip shop reached Manchester, when a Mr Lees opened a shop in Mossley. Interestingly, throughout world war II, fish and chips remained one of the few foods in the United Kingdom not subject to rationing. Salt and vinegar (spirit preferred) or gravy usually goes with it.
Across britain, fish and chip shops offer a varied menu. Pete covers the usual staples
mushy peas, Dinaclass curry sauce, sausages, heated (but not fried) pies and suit puddings, gravy, fried chicken. Further north you can expect scallops (wide slices of potato in batter), deep fried Mars bars, deep fried pizza and haggis are popular in Scotland. In Edinburgh you would most likely buy a 'supper' with 'Salt n sauce' (watered down brown sauce - 'sottensauce'). In many places you can buy a whole picked egg or individual pickled onions too. In east Anglia and the south east fish roes or rock salmon can often be found.
Most places use vegatable oil these days, but a few proudly fry in lard (and generally have a sign outside shouting the fact). Waste frying oil is sometimes nowadays used to make bio-diesel. Older diesel cars can often run on it without modification. I would not try it in a HDI style engine though!
As a kid I remember the local chippy doing fizzy minerals too. Ben Shaws from Huddesfield with 2p back on the bottle, which was returned. Collect enough of those to take back and you had enough for a bag of chips with batter bits (and pea-wet if you couldn't afford a proper portion of green mushy peas). You always got it in newspaper too, that was before the possible perils of printers ink were legislated for. Still the terrible names are still there
Codfellas, FryDays, 'Good Buy Mr Chips', 'The Fryery' , 'The Codfather', 'The Frying Scotsman' and the classic 'Assault and Battery'.
