Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X2CG3E - This image shows the entrance to the London North Eastern Railway (LNER) First Class Lounge located within Leeds railway station in West Yorkshire, England. The photograph focuses on the distinctive red curved signage reading First Class Lounge, clearly branded with LNER corporate identity and positioned above the entrance doorway. The lounge provides a dedicated waiting area for first class rail passengers, offering a quieter, more comfortable environment away from the main station concourse.
Leeds railway station is one of the busiest transport hubs in the north of England, serving as a major interchange on the East Coast Main Line and a key gateway for rail travel between Leeds, London, the North East, and Scotland. Operated by Network Rail, the station has undergone significant modernisation in recent decades, reflecting the growing importance of Leeds as a regional economic and commercial centre.
First class lounges such as this form part of the wider premium service offering provided by LNER, catering primarily to business travellers, long-distance passengers, and frequent rail users. The image captures contemporary railway interior design, clear passenger wayfinding, and the emphasis on branded customer experience within modern UK rail infrastructure. The photograph is suitable for editorial use relating to rail transport, passenger services, travel, public transport investment, and the operation of Britain's intercity railway network.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J76 - This image shows an electronic passenger information display at a UK railway station, advertising a service to London Euston operated by Avanti West Coast on the West Coast Main Line. The sign provides key travel details including departure time, destination, expected running time, intermediate calling points, and carriage class layout.
London Euston is one of Britain's principal long-distance rail termini, serving routes linking London with the Midlands, North West England, and Scotland. Digital information boards such as this are a central feature of modern railway operations, helping passengers navigate complex timetables and manage delays or platform changes.
The amber LED display is mounted beneath a station canopy, with steel and timber roof structures visible above, situating the scene firmly within a traditional British railway environment. The combination of historic station architecture and contemporary digital signage reflects the layered evolution of the UK rail network.
Photographed indoors under ambient station lighting, the image is well suited to editorial use covering rail transport, public infrastructure, commuting, long-distance travel, business journeys, and the everyday experience of Britain's railway stations.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R8T9G7 - The British Rail Class 390 Pendolino is a type of electric high-speed passenger train operated by Avanti West Coast in the United Kingdom, leased from Angel Trains. They are electric multiple units using Fiat Ferroviaria's tilting train Pendolino technology and built by Alstom. Fifty-three units were originally built between 2001 and 2004 for operation on the West Coast Main Line (WCML). They were ordered as eight-car units, later extended to nine cars, of which some were then lengthened further to 11 cars. These new 11-car trains were renumbered as the subclass 390/1. The trains of the original batch were the last to be assembled at Alstom's Washwood Heath plant, before its closure in 2005. The remaining trains in the fleet were built in Italy.
The Class 390 Pendolino is one of the fastest domestic electric multiple units operating in Britain, with a design speed of 140 mph (225 km/h)
however, limitations to track signalling systems restrict the trains to a maximum speed of 125 mph (200 km/h) in service. The fleet is maintained at Longsight TMD near Manchester Piccadilly station.
From 2021, a refurbishment program to upgrade the fleet to as new condition was begun, involving conversion of one first-class carriage to standard class to increase capacity, power plugs and new customer information screens among other upgrades

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RADRX1 - Milton Keynes Central railway station serves Milton Keynes and surrounding parts of Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire (England). The station is located on the West Coast Main Line about 50 miles (80 km) northwest of London. The station is served by Avanti West Coast intercity services, and by West Midlands Trains regional services.
This is the principal station for the city, one of seven serving the Milton Keynes urban area. Milton Keynes Central, which opened on 17 May 1982, is by far the busiest and most important of these, as well as being the largest in terms of platforms in use, having overtaken Bletchley when platforms 2A and 6 became operational.
Milton Keynes Central has a total of seven platforms. Platforms 1 and 3 are the south and northbound slow platforms, while 4 and 6 are the south and northbound fast platforms. Platforms 2 and 5 are reversible, being slow and fast respectively. Platform 2 is used mainly by terminating stopping services from London Euston, whilst platforms 1 and 3 are used by West Midlands Trains services between Euston and Northampton, Birmingham New Street or Crewe. Platforms 4, 5 and 6 are used by Avanti West Coast inter-city express services between London and the West Midlands, north Wales, the north-west or Scotland.
Platform 2A is a five-car south-facing bay platform, originally intended for the extension of Marston Vale Line services from Bedford into Milton Keynes Central this proposal no longer appears in plans for East West Rail, being replaced by a planned service to/from Oxford or Aylesbury (see below). Meanwhile, platform 2A is used only by exception when additional platform capacity is needed, such as when there is a service delay. To the north of the station the six lines reduce to four (two slow and two fast) and there is a mile of five-track running to the south before this also reduces back to four.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPH6JH - Alexander Denton (1542-8 January 1576) of Hillesden in Buckinghamshire was a landowner and member of the Buckinghamshire gentry. He is best known for his two monuments, one in Hereford Cathedral the other in Hillesden Church.
Origins
He was the only child and heir of Thomas Denton (1515-1558) of Hillesden, several times a Member of Parliament, by his wife Margaret Mordaunt, a daughter of John Mordaunt, 1st Baron Mordaunt, of Turvey, Bedfordshire, and widow of Edmund Fettiplace (d.1540) of Besselsleigh, Berkshire.[1]
Marriages - he married twice:
Firstly to Anne Willison (1548-1566), who died aged 18, a daughter of Richard Willison (d.1575) of Sugwas near Hereford, by his wife Anne Elton of Ledbury,[2] whose joint monument with recumbent effigies survives, mutilated, in Madley Church.[3] Arms of Willison: A chevron between three lions rampant, as visible on the Madley Church monument and on the Denton monument in Hereford Cathedral.
Secondly he married Mary Martin (d.1574) a 15-year-old daughter and co-heiress of Sir Roger Martyn, Lord Mayor of London in 1567. Her portrait by George Gower to commemorate her marriage survives in the York Art Gallery.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AR6MXP - Avanti West Coast is a train operating company in the United Kingdom owned by FirstGroup (70%) and Trenitalia (30%) that began operating the West Coast Partnership franchise on 8 December 2019. It replaced Virgin Trains, which had operated the franchise since 1997.
In August 2019 the DfT awarded the franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium with Avanti West Coast to commence operations on 8 December 2019. Some uncertainty remains as the Competition and Markets Authority launched a merger inquiry into the award of the franchise following a referral from the European Commission
Avanti West Coast initially operates the same services as Virgin Trains on the West Coast Main Line. When High Speed 2 opens, it will also operate these services.
Over the course of the franchise several timetable changes are expected to be made

It replaced Virgin Trains, which had operated the franchise since 1997.
In November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced that the InterCity West Coast franchise would be superseded by the West Coast Partnership (WCP), which would include operating High Speed 2 (HS2) services from 2026.
The DfT required that bidders have experience in high-speed trains and infrastructure, hence all partnered with an existing high-speed operator. In June 2017, the DfT announced that three consortia had been shortlisted to bid for the franchise:
FirstGroup (70%) / Trenitalia (30%)
MTR Corporation (75%) / Guangshen Railway Company (25%)
Stagecoach (50%) / SNCF (30%) / Virgin Group (20%)

Situated on the south side of the Thames in the Tower Bridge Conservation Area, this historic Southwark pub offers a truly traditional English experience. From the fish and chip suppers served, to the string of clearly designated separate rooms, upright piano, games room and open fire this pub effortlessly captures old-fashioned England.
Within the dark, oak walls of this late 18th century, former dock-workers pub, one of the most quintessentially English inventions took seed. Dr Samuel Johnson compiled his English dictionary in a special room inside The Anchor Tap. Originally a place for brewery employees to sample the fruits of their labour, a Tap Room was traditionally set up near its parent brewery.
The Anchor Tap was the first such establishment set up by British brewing legends, John Courage, and was located in close proximity to the former Anchor Brewery and the old Hop Exchange on Borough High Street. The Anchor Tap is an unpretentious, wharfside treasure offering a simple taste of a bygone English age.

Virgin Trains introduced three sliding classes of travel. Instead of First and Standard, you'd have Gold Zone, Blue Zone and Purple Zone. Gold Zone was full First Class and available to full-fare First Open ticket holders only. This would always take up at least 2 of the First Class vehicles, but in the peaks would take up all of them.
'Purple Zone was Standard Class, available to all Standard ticket holders, and would take up at least 3 of the Standard Class vehicles. The other vehicles would be the Blue Zone, which was where it got controversial. The Blue Zone was available only to holders of full-fare undiscounted Standard Open singles and returns, but also contained Weekend First accommodation on weekends and off-peak. On weekends, it would include both First and Standard accommodation, but in the peaks Standard only.'

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AJRRHJ - Avanti West Coast is a train operating company in the United Kingdom owned by FirstGroup (70%) and Trenitalia (30%) that began operating the West Coast Partnership franchise on 8 December 2019.
In August 2019 the DfT awarded the franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium with Avanti West Coast to commence operations on 8 December 2019. Some uncertainty remains as the Competition and Markets Authority launched a merger inquiry into the award of the franchise following a referral from the European Commission
Avanti West Coast initially operates the same services as Virgin Trains on the West Coast Main Line. When High Speed 2 opens, it will also operate these services.
