Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64KW2 - The MV Royal Iris of the Mersey is a Mersey Ferry in operation on the River Mersey, England. From launch in Devon in 1959 until a major refurbishment in 2001, she was named MV Mountwood.
MV Mountwood
The Mountwood was the slightly older sister ship of the MV Woodchurch. Both of the ferries were built for the Corporation of Birkenhead to replace the existing fleet of 1930s steamers. The designs of the two new vessels were loosely based on the ferries Leasowe and Egremont of the Wallasey Corporation
they were designed by the same company, Graham and Woolnough, and were built at the same shipyard, Messrs. Philip and Sons Ltd. of Dartmouth. Mountwood was launched by Mrs Hugh Platt on 6 July 1959 into the River Dart, and after being fitted out was delivered to the Mersey in 1960. She was named after an overspill post-war housing development of Birkenhead.
The Mountwood and her identical sister Woodchurch originally had bright orange funnels with a black base and black soot buffer. On the main deck, there was a forward, heated shelter and also a main saloon, aft of this was the toilets and machine space. Below was a saloon bar. On the top deck was a large open promenade and a forward shelter beneath the bridge, although this shelter was open beneath the bridge so it was often breezy and cold. They had a main central wheelhouse and two side cabs, and power came from two medium speed Crossley 8-cylinder diesel engines.
In 2001, the Mountwood was withdrawn and taken to Birkenhead's former Cammell Laird shipyard (which became owned by A&P), and then to Clarence graving docks, where she was stripped of her fittings and parts of her superstructure were removed and rebuilt. Unfortunately the ferry remained dormant for some time due to problems at the shipyard. She was then re-engined and rebuilt. Noticeable changes were the addition of a new, angle fronted, large wheelhouse and bridge deck, plus her funnel, which was reinstated after the refit, was moved further back

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64MHX - This image shows the E7 navigation buoy, a weathered green light buoy positioned on the Birkenhead side of the River Mersey, with the modern Liverpool skyline visible across the water in the background. The buoy is heavily rusted, displaying layers of corrosion and patina that reflect long exposure to salt air, tides, and industrial river traffic.
Navigation buoys such as this play a critical role in maritime safety, marking shipping channels and guiding vessels through busy and often confined waterways. The River Mersey remains one of the UK's most significant estuaries, serving the Port of Liverpool and accommodating ferries, commercial shipping, and leisure craft.
The contrast between the industrial, utilitarian buoy in the foreground and the contemporary high-rise buildings of Liverpool behind highlights the changing character of the Mersey waterfront. Birkenhead and Liverpool share a long maritime and industrial history, with navigation aids forming part of the everyday but largely unnoticed infrastructure that underpins port operations.
Photographed in clear daylight under blue skies, the image works well as editorial material illustrating British maritime heritage, port infrastructure, coastal navigation, and the visual relationship between historic working waterways and regenerated urban skylines.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHX7CA - Itsukushima (厳島) is an island in the western part of the Inland Sea of Japan, located in the northwest of Hiroshima Bay. It is popularly known as Miyajima (宮島), which in Japanese means Shrine Island. The island is one of Hayashi Gahō's Three Views of Japan specified in 1643. Itsukushima is part of the city of Hatsukaichi in Hiroshima Prefecture. The island was part of the former town of Miyajima before the 2005 merger with Hatsukaichi.
Itsukushima is famous for the Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to records, the shrine was established in the time of Empress Suiko. The warrior-courtier Taira no Kiyomori gave the shrine its present form. In 1555, Mōri Motonari defeated Sue Harukata at the Battle of Miyajima. Toyotomi Hideyoshi built a large building, the Senjō-kaku, on a hill above the shrine.
Itsukushima has a number of temples, including Toyokuni Shrine with a five-storied pagoda, and Daiganji Temple - one of the three most famous Benzaiten temples of Japan. The island is also famous for its upper hill side cherry blossoms and maple leaf autumn foliage.
The island of Itsukushima, including the waters around it (part of Seto Inland Sea), lies within Setonaikai National Park. This sea is affected by strong tides. At low tide, the bottom of the sea is exposed past the island's torii. At high tide, the sea covers all the previously exposed seabed mud and fills areas underneath the shrine boardwalk.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEW1W1 - Stornoway (Gaelic: Steòrnabhagh) is a town on the Isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides (also known as the Western Isles) of Scotland.
The town's population is around 8,000, making it the largest town in the Hebrides, with a third of the population of the civil parish of Stornoway, which includes various nearby villages and has a population of approximately 12,000.
Stornoway is an important port and the major town and administrative centre of the Outer Hebrides. It is home to Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (the Western Isles Council) and a variety of educational, sporting and media establishments. Observance of the Christian Sabbath (Sunday) has long been an aspect of the island's culture. Recent changes mean that Sunday on Lewis is now less different from Sunday on the other Western Isles or the mainland of Scotland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H6ETRR - Aberdeen Harbour was the first publicly limited company in the United Kingdom and is today the principal commercial port in northern Scotland and an international port for general cargo, roll-on/roll-off and container traffic. The harbour also serves NorthLink Ferries, which sail to Kirkwall, Orkney and Lerwick, Shetland. The Aberdeen Maritime Museum (on Shiprow in the city centre) includes exhibitions and displays which tell the story of the harbour and its role in the economy and development of the city.
Originally, the defective harbour, with a shallow sand and gravel bar at its entrance, retarded the trade of Aberdeen, but under various acts since 1773 it was greatly deepened.
By the Harbour Act of 1868, the river Dee near the harbour was diverted from the south at a cost of £80,000, and 90 acres (364,000 m²) of new ground, in addition to 25 acres (101,000 m²) formerly made up, were provided on the north side of the river for the Albert Basin (with a graving dock), quays and warehouses. A 1050 ft (320 m) long concrete breakwater was constructed on the south side of the stream as a protection against south-easterly gales. On Girdleness, the southern point of the bay, a lighthouse was built in 1833.
The North Pier, built partly by John Smeaton 1775-81, and partly by Thomas Telford 1810-15, extends nearly 3,000 ft (1000 m) into the North Sea and raised the bar.
Victoria Dock, named in honour of the queen's visit to the city in that year, is a wet dock of 29 acres (117,000 m²) and with 6000 ft (1800 m) of quay, was completed in 1848

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXM1K - The area around the Pier Head and Albert Dock is iconic for tourists / travelers and even more beautiful by night or at dusk.
The Pier Head is a riverside location in the city centre of Liverpool, England. It is part of the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was inscribed in 2004.
The site encompasses a trio of landmarks, built on the site of the former George's Dock and referred to since at least 2000 as The Three Graces:
Royal Liver Building, built between 1908 and 1911 and designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas. It is a grade I listed building consisting of two clock towers, both crowned by mythical Liver Birds. The building is the headquarters of the Royal Liver Friendly Society.
Cunard Building, constructed between 1914 and 1916 and a grade II* listed building. It is the former headquarters of the Cunard Line shipping company.
Port of Liverpool Building, built from 1903 to 1907 and also grade II* listed. It is the former home of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board.
Also on the site is the grade II listed Mersey Tunnel building, to the east of the Port of Liverpool building. It was built in the 1930s and contains offices and ventilator equipment for the Queensway Tunnel.

Historical references to Los Cristianos date back to the 16th century, when it is described as a harbour by the Notary Hernán Guerra.[2] Los Cristianos remained an important port for the south of Tenerife throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th Centuries but remained unsettled until the latter part of the 19th Century due to the threat of pirate raids as there was no significant population to warrant a castle or fort.
The first permanent settlement of Los Cristianos was in the 1860s when it was described by Pedro de Olive as a hamlet in Arona, with three one-storey houses, a two-storey house and a hut. It was officially recognised in governmental documents as been established in 1888 by 29 houses and a cave.

I've been waiting to hear your voice for too long now
One way conversations do not work somehow
Tell me how does one get your soul in touch with the one above
When one way conversations pay a price for the use of love
I tried so hard last night you would not talk to me
I live with the fear of the few with the gift
And I know what's going to be...
Sunrise was a track from Lowlife, the third New Order album. Released in May 1985 by Factory Records, Low-Life is considered to be among New Order's strongest work, displaying the moment in which the band completed its transformation from post-punk hold-overs to dance rock pioneers. The album shows New Order's increased incorporation of synthesizers and samplers, while still preserving the rock aspects of their earlier work.
The album's artwork is the only New Order release to feature photographs of the band members on its cover. By default, drummer/keyboardist Stephen Morris is on the front cover, but it actually features four photographs inside the case and a semi-transparent piece of paper with the band's name on. Owners can choose which band member is seen through the sleeve.
The original Factory release (Japan and UK) CD versions of this album are mastered with pre-emphasis.
The album was preceded by the release of the full-length version of 'The Perfect Kiss' as a single (only an edited version appears on the album). John Robie's remix of 'Sub-culture' was also released as a 12' single. Both of these extended versions eventually were included on 1987's Substance.
Fiddlers Ferry Power Station is a coal fired power station located in Cuerdley, Cheshire in North West England, which is capable of co-firing biomass. It is situated on the north bank of the River Mersey between the towns of Widnes and Warrington. Opened in 1971, the station has a generating capacity of 1,989 megawatts (MW). Since the privatisation of the Central Electricity Generating Board in 1990, the station has been operated by various companies. Since 2004, Scottish and Southern Energy plc have operated the station.
With its eight 114-metre (374 ft) high cooling towers and 200-metre (660 ft) high chimney the station is a prominent landmark and can be seen from as far away as the Peak District and the Pennines. rather than a sunrise, this is a sunset as locals will notice.

I have certainly taken a few shots of it over the years, its a Stornoway icon, (almost as famous as butchers Macleod & MacleodsBlack Pudding or Irn Bru Sausages).
As you walk in there is bric-a-brac downstairs with soft furnishings at the rear. Upstairs are the wearables, shoes, clothes etc. I am told that they stock some quite posh stuff too. I did spot some people sporting Tommy Hilfiger tops in The Thai Cafe, although that might have been from a stall on Inverness Market. They did have mainland accents!
An on-line review I read said iThere's a nice selection of Posh womens hats and bags (Think weddings and church) and a range of womens wear and underwear which is mostly suited to the more mature lady but sometimes you can find a great modern young person piece./i

Cast are an English rock band from Liverpool, formed in 1992 by John Power (vocals, guitar) and Peter Wilkinson (backing vocals, bass) after Power left The La's and Wilkinson's former band Shack had split. Following early line-ups with different guitarists and drummers, Liam &
quot
Skin&
quot
Tyson (guitar) and Keith O'Neill (drums) joined Cast in 1993.
Emerging from the Britpop movement of the mid-1990s, Cast signed to Polydor Records and their debut album All Change (1995) became the highest selling album for the label. Further commercial success continued with the albums Mother Nature Calls (1997) and Magic Hour (1999), however the band's fourth album Beetroot (2001) was far less successful which led to the band's split soon after. Cast reunited for a UK tour in November 2010.
Noel Gallagher of Oasis described watching the band live as being like a &
quot
religious experience&
quot
and they were labelled &
quot
The Who of the 90's&
quot
. It has been suggested that the name &
quot
Cast&
quot
was taken from the final word on The La's eponymous album (the song &
quot
Looking Glass&
quot
ends with the repeated line &
quot
The change is cast&
quot
), though John Power stated when interviewed that this was a coincidence.
Despite never having a number one single or album, nor winning any major awards (although they were once nominated for &
quot
Best British Newcomer&
quot
at the 1996 BRIT Awards), Cast still proved to be very popular at their peak of success, with All Change being a multi-platinum seller of 600,000 units.
Elgol (Scottish Gaelic: Ealaghol) is a village on the shores of Loch Scavaig towards the end of the Strathaird peninsula in the Isle of Skye, in the Scottish Highlands. According to tradition, its name derives from a battle fought with five ships by Aella, a follower of Vortigern, against the Picts and Scots (“Aella-gol”).
The Strathaird peninsula was historically a heartland of the Mackinnons, a robustly Jacobite clan. On 4 July 1746, the Young Pretender found sanctuary at Elgol in the course of his wanderings under the protection of Mackinnon of Mackinnon and Captain John Mackinnon of Elgol. The cave where he is said to have waited for a boat to the mainland (“Prince Charlie’s cave”, or “Uamh Phrionnsa”) can still be visited today, a short walk to the south of the village.

For some years, between April and September each Tuesday evening is 'Motorbike Night'. Coles Miller are soliciters and are now 'sponsoring' the event.
From 6pm, the Quay is closed to all traffic, which lets everyone wander around and look at the various machines. Owners, many well heeled, plus the odd Satans Slave and Hells Angel are keen to show off their pride &
joy.
On this tuesday evening there must have been 1000 to 1500 bikes. A panorama joiner in a Hockney style is probably the only way to show the size of the spectacle.

A highland cattle herd book registry was started in 1885 and this lists pedigrees etc. This was a very wet rainy day all over central and north Scotland with many lochs north and west of Calendar in the Trossochs very high, often lapping up to the roadside. This cow had been soaked by it all day by the looks of it and had been scratching itself on some barbed wire next to his field.
Highland breeds do thrive on poor mountain land with high annual rainfall and bitter winds however. Gaelic names are encouraged for the naming of cows. Some female names include A Bhuidhe Aillidh (a Yellow Beauty), Fraoch (Heather) and Sonasag (Little Happy Female). Male names include Aonghas (Angus), Companach (Companion), Cuairtear (Tourist) and Gruaghach (long haired one).
Have a look at www.highlandcattlesociety.com, a very interesting site all about these animals.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4337673883 - 'Kevin is the Thelwall ferryman. He rows passengers across the Manchester Ship Canal over to Thelwall Eyes (Often now called Woolston Eyes). These are four man-made areas formed by large embankments for the dispersement of dredging waste, although these days are a haven for bird life. A little bit of countryside on the edge of built up Warrington.
In the ferry office is a small baby Belling, and a small bottle gas heater as source of warmth. It can get very cold in the winter, as at the moment. It is cool in summer however.
Inside the ferry man's wooden box are scrawling's in ink from numerous MSCC employees over the years including the story from 1974 of the ferry man who died on the job. A very interesting wooden lid.
The ferry connects an ancient right of way that was disrupted when the ship canal opened. The MSCC had to provide a means of crossing, a small rowing boat. It is part time and currently 12p per person per trip to use it. A full day pass for unlimited trips can be purchased for 25p.
A tired and weather worn wooden sign near the ferry pier mentions the agreement in 1982 between Cheshire County Council and Warrington Borough Council. Hours are stated as 7:00am to 9:00am, 12:00 to 14:00 and 16:00 to 19:00 (although now 18:00).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF0NPP - Old tram with driver, Woodside, Birkenhead, Wirral, Merseyside, NW England, UK
Birkenhead had the first street tramway in Europe. Opened on 29 August 1860 the first line ran from Woodside (adjoining the terminal of the Mersey Ferry) to Birkenhead Park. This early system was horse-drawn and was the brainchild of flamboyant American, George Francis Train. A preserved tram was on display in the Woodside ferry terminal booking hall.
The system was later electrified and operated from 1901 as Birkenhead Corporation Tramways. Two replica trams, imported from Hong Kong, have been brought into service as part of a heritage tramway between Woodside and Wirral Transport Museum, and Birkenhead Corporation Tramways Car No.20 is preserved on this line and shown here.

Chips with gravy or curry sauce is a favourite at lunch times as is a cheeky chips (chips with a battered pork sausage)
Friendly staff and quick service unless your order has to be made right away.
Always busy at lunch times with school children (between 1 and 2)

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3890901488 - 'An evening panorama from Stornoway town on the Isle of Lewis, Western Isles, Scotland. Just after a rain shower, the town looks clean and washed.
Steòrnabhagh in Gaelic is a burgh on the Isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides of western Scotland.
The town's population is approximately 9,000 out of a total population of more than 26,00 for the whole of the Western Isles chain. The town is an important port and the major town and administrative centre of the Outer Hebrides. It is home to Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (the Western Isles Council or CNES ). Christian observance of the Sabbath is an important aspect of the town's culture and on Sunday the town is grid-locked by church going folk, getting in and out of the town.
Indeed until recently there were no flights or ferries to Lewis on Sunday and (thankfully) no newspapers that day.
Stornoway was originally a Viking settlement and developed around its well sheltered natural harbour. The name Stornoway itself is derived from 'Stjornavagr', an Old Norse word for 'steering bay'.
The annual Hebridean Celtic Festival is a 4-day community led festival which attracts over 10,000 visitors during July of each year. The Royal National Mod has been held in Stornoway on a number of occasions.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3828011848 - 'The historic site over 4000 years old on the west coast of the isle of Lewis, outer Hebrides. Easiest way to reach it is via Stornoway (main port and airport). The layout of the monument is in the shape of a distorted Celtic cross.
These Callanish Stones (or 'Callanish I'), Clachan Chalanais or Tursachan Chalanais in Gaelic, are situated near the village of Callanish (Gaelic: Calanais) on the west coast of the isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides (Western Isles), Scotland. Construction of the site probably took place around 2900 and 2600 BC, though there were possibly earlier buildings before 3000 BC. A tomb was later built into the site. Thirteen primary stones form a circle about 13 metres in diameter, with a long approach avenue of stones to the north, and shorter stone rows to the east, south, and west (possibly incomplete avenues). The overall layout of the monument recalls a distorted Celtic cross. The individual stones vary from around 1 m to 5 m in height, with an average of 4 metres, and are of the local course Lewisian gneiss.
The site is very haunting at sunset when the visitors have gone.

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
Heres a track that comes up a lot on my shuffle and it cropped up this very morning.
Initially a Leeds left-wing-inspired post-punk British rock group, Scritti Politti developed into a more mainstream pop music project in the early to mid 1980s. Scritti Politti originally consisted of Green Gartside (born Paul Julian Strohmeyer) as the lead vocalist, Nial Jinks as bass player, Tom Morley as drummer, and Matthew Kay as the manager who sometimes played the keyboard.
The name 'Scritti Politti' was chosen as a homage to the Italian Marxist theorist Antonio Gramsci: The name is generally understood to refer to Gramsci's political writings (although the correct spelling in Italian would have produced 'Scritti Politici'). Gartside changed it to 'Scritti Politti' as he thought it sounded more rock and roll, like 'Tutti Frutti'.
'Skank Bloc Bologna' picked up airplay on John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show, and the band were signed to the 'Rough Trade' label under Geoff Travis in 1979,
Gartside and Jinks had gone to school together in South Wales, and Gartside met Morley at Leeds Polytechnic, a college they both attended. They played one show as 'The Against' in 1976, doing covers of Chelsea songs. Disillusioned and bored with art school, Gartside and Morley left in June 1978 and moved into a squat at 1 Carol Street in Camden Town, London. Jinks was invited to join the band. Gartside apparently taught him how to play the bass in three weeks.
Gartside recorded a demo of one of his new songs, 'The Sweetest Girl', in January 1981, and the song was included on a compilation of songs on cassette (the C81) given out with the March issue of NME. I still have it in the loft somewhere.
Success in the 1980's led to a number of LP releases and in 1988, 'Provision' contained this little gem.
