Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM9966 - A crisp winter view of the Playfair Monument and the observatory dome at the City Observatory complex on Calton Hill in Edinburgh. The building is presented as a bold neoclassical composition: heavy stone blocks, a temple-like form, and rows of classical columns supporting a pediment on each end. Behind and between the two porticoes, the pale observatory dome rises above the roofline, giving a clear visual link to astronomy and scientific heritage. The sky is a deep, clean blue with bright cold-season light that sharpens the edges of the stonework and makes the architecture feel monumental and timeless.
The foreground includes rough winter vegetation and low grasses, which helps communicate the hilltop setting and the feel of an open public park rather than a busy street location. The overall atmosphere suggests a dry, cold day with excellent visibility, the kind of weather that draws visitors up Calton Hill for panoramic views and landmark photography. The image has strong editorial value because it captures an instantly recognisable Edinburgh heritage site, while remaining uncluttered by crowds.
This photograph suits themes such as Edinburgh tourism, Scotland travel, neoclassical architecture, historic observatories, and the city's long association with science and the Enlightenment. It also works well as a general location illustration for Calton Hill, conservation, and heritage-led destination marketing, particularly for winter city-break coverage where clear skies and crisp light are part of the story.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM99BP - A wide, documentary winter view of the Scottish Parliament Building at Holyrood, Edinburgh, showing the public approach to the main entrance and the bold, modern facade of the parliamentary complex. The architecture has a distinctly contemporary, sculptural feel: curved roofline, strong geometric window rhythm, and mixed materials that read as stone, metal and timber tones. In the foreground, the open paved public space creates a sense of scale, with scattered stone bollards and the clean lines of the approach guiding the eye toward the glazed entrance.
A prominent purple visitor sign in the scene reads Explore the Parliament Building, reinforcing this as an accessible civic destination as well as the working home of Scottish democracy. A few pedestrians add human scale and a calm, everyday atmosphere, typical of Edinburgh's winter season when daylight is bright but low and the air often feels crisp. The light is clear and cool, with long, gentle shadows and a pale sky, suggesting cold weather conditions without snowfall.
The image works strongly for editorial themes around governance, politics, devolution, civic life and public institutions, as well as travel and architecture coverage focused on Holyrood, the Canongate and central Edinburgh. It also suits broader storytelling about how modern national buildings sit within historic European cities, and how public engagement is encouraged through free exhibitions, tours and visitor access at the Scottish Parliament

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM9858 - A documentary street-level photograph of a branded MSV (Mosscare St Vincent's Housing) service van parked in Stockport, Greater Manchester. The vehicle's yellow and white livery is clearly readable and promotes the organisation and its housing support offer, including the phrases Healthy Homes and Fair & Friendly Service. The branding also shows the MSV name and logo, the website msvhousing.co.uk, and a contact telephone number 0161 226 4211, making the image highly searchable for editorial and sector use. Simple illustrated figures on the panel suggest community-focused housing work and practical property support.
The composition is straightforward and functional, focusing on the side profile of the van with the signage fully visible, which is often exactly what editors need for a neutral illustration of a housing association, landlord services, or housing maintenance activity. The setting reads as a typical urban backstreet or service-road environment with industrial or commercial buildings in the background, reinforcing themes of frontline operational delivery rather than corporate office life.
This image can support stories about UK social housing providers, tenant and resident services, repairs and maintenance operations, healthy homes initiatives, damp and mould response, and wider housing quality and wellbeing agendas. It also suits business and public-sector coverage of service fleets, neighbourhood operations, and the day-to-day logistics of housing management in Greater Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAWPK - A brightly lit red and green neon Pawn Shop sign mounted on the exterior of a building in Dublin city centre, photographed during daylight hours under a clear blue sky, suggesting fair spring or early summer weather. The sign stands out against the surrounding brickwork and urban streetscape, typical of inner-city retail environments.
Pawn shops play a visible role in urban economies, particularly during periods of rising living costs, inflation and housing pressure. In Dublin, where accommodation and everyday expenses have increased sharply in recent years, such businesses are often used editorially to illustrate themes of financial strain, short-term credit, consumer debt and economic inequality.
The image captures a small but telling detail of city-centre street life, linking retail signage with wider social and economic conditions. It is well suited for editorial use in articles addressing the cost-of-living crisis, urban deprivation, household finances, and the changing character of high streets in Irish cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAWW8 - The Jeanie Johnston, a full-scale replica of a nineteenth-century Irish emigrant ship, lies moored on the north bank of the River Liffey in Dublin, viewed here from the south bank. The scene is photographed in daylight under a blue sky with scattered cloud, suggesting mild spring or early summer conditions typical of fair weather in Ireland.
The ship's tall masts, rigging and traditional wooden hull stand in contrast to the modern glass and brick architecture of Dublin Docklands, reflecting the city's blend of historic memory and contemporary regeneration. Calm river conditions and soft natural light enhance the clarity of the waterfront setting.
The Jeanie Johnston serves as a floating museum and powerful symbol of Irish emigration during the Great Famine, when thousands left Ireland for North America. Today it remains a prominent riverside landmark, frequently used in editorial contexts relating to Irish history, migration, maritime heritage, tourism and Dublin's evolving urban landscape.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJRA - Ian Kevin Curtis (15 July 1956 ? 18 May 1980) was an English singer, songwriter and musician. He was the lead singer, songwriter, and occasional guitarist of the band Joy Division, with whom he released the albums Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980).
Curtis had severe epilepsy and depression and died by suicide on the eve of Joy Division's first North American tour, shortly before the release of Closer
On the evening of 17 May 1980, Curtis asked Deborah to drop her impending divorce proceedings
she replied that it was likely that he would have changed his mind by the following morning and then ? mindful of his previous suicide attempt and also concerned that his state of anxiety and frustration might drive Curtis into an epileptic seizure ? offered to spend the night in his company. Deborah then drove to her parents' home to inform them of her intentions. When she returned to the couple's home at 77 Barton Street in Macclesfield, his demeanour had changed and he informed his wife of his intentions to spend the night alone, first making her promise not to return to the house before he had taken his scheduled 10 a.m. train to Manchester to meet his bandmates.
In the early hours of the next morning, Curtis took his own life. He was 23 years old. He had used the kitchen's washing line to hang himself after having written a note to Deborah in which he declared his love for her despite his recent affair with Honor??. Deborah found his body soon after. In her 1995 biography, Touching from a Distance, Deborah recalls finding her husband's body and initially thinking that he was still alive before noticing the rope around his neck. According to Tony Wilson, Curtis spent the few hours before his suicide watching Werner Herzog's 1977 film Stroszek and listening to Iggy Pop's 1977 album The Idiot. Stark notes the significance of this album, as Pop's title was inspired by Dostoyevsky's novel The Idiot about the spiritually sensitive epileptic prince who was driven mad

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6FM - The Star and Garter is a historic public house and long-established grassroots live music venue located on Fairfield Street in Ardwick, Manchester, at 18?20 Fairfield Street, Manchester M1 2QF. The building occupies a prominent corner site close to Manchester Piccadilly Station, an area historically shaped by rail infrastructure, warehouses and working-city activity.
Constructed in Victorian red brick with ornate stone detailing, the pub's distinctive architecture reflects late nineteenth-century urban development in Manchester, when public houses functioned not only as drinking establishments but as important social and cultural meeting places. Architectural features visible in the image include arched windows, decorative cornices and prominent corner signage identifying both the venue and the surrounding street.
Beyond its architectural significance, the Star and Garter has earned national recognition for its role in Manchester's alternative and independent music culture. Over several decades it has operated as a key grassroots venue, hosting live performances spanning post-punk, indie, experimental, noise and DIY music scenes. The venue is widely regarded as an essential testing ground for emerging bands and touring underground acts, contributing to Manchester's reputation as a city with a deep and continually evolving music heritage.
In recent years, venues such as the Star and Garter have also come to symbolise broader debates around the future of independent cultural spaces, rising urban land values, and the pressures faced by small live-music venues within regenerating city centres. As such, the building represents not just a pub or concert space, but a wider narrative about cultural survival, community identity and the importance of grassroots infrastructure within the UK's creative industries.
Photographed in daylight with street signage and surrounding urban context visible, the image documents the physical presence of the Star and Garter

The pub stands close to Manchester Piccadilly Station, an area long associated with rail travel, warehousing and late-nineteenth-century urban development.
The building features characteristic Victorian red-brick construction with decorative stonework and a prominent street-corner sign identifying Fairfield Street and Ardwick. The Star and Garter has operated as a public house for over a century and is widely recognised in Manchester for its association with alternative music, independent culture and the city's grassroots live-music scene.
In recent decades, the venue has gained national recognition as an important space for emerging bands and experimental music, contributing to Manchester's reputation as a city with a strong and diverse musical heritage. The image documents both the architectural detail of the building and its place within Manchester's historic streetscape, offering editorial value for themes of urban history, pub culture and music venues in northern England. The Star and Garter has long been regarded as one of Manchester's most important grass-roots live-music pubs, particularly for post-punk, indie, noise and DIY scenes. Over the years it has hosted performances by bands closely associated with the city's alternative music heritage, including The Fall, whose members were known to frequent and play small, informal venues around Piccadilly and Ardwick, as well as later generations of experimental and underground acts. More recently, the venue has become a key stop for touring and local artists such as Gnod, Hey Colossus, and Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, reinforcing its reputation as a place where loud, uncompromising music thrives. Rather than hosting polished mainstream shows, the Star and Garter's significance lies in rock.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWDK09 - The Dominic Cummings scandal, or the Dominic Cummings affair, was a series of events involving the British political strategist Dominic Cummings during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom. The events include at least one journey that Cummings, then-chief adviser of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and his family made from London to County Durham after the start of a national lockdown in March 2020 while they were experiencing symptoms of COVID-19.
Reports of the trip first emerged in May 2020 following investigations by the Daily Mirror and The Guardian. Questions arose about whether the conduct of Cummings and his wife was lawful and appropriate within the framework of government advice and guidance, given that the public were ordered to stay at home, that all non-essential travel was forbidden during the lockdown, and that infected persons had been instructed to self-isolate.
Cummings denied he had broken any rules in a press conference a few days later. Durham Constabulary investigated the trip, concluding there may have been a minor breach, but did not take any further action. The scandal led to criticism from Members of Parliament (MPs) within and outside the ruling Conservative Party, backlash in the media and from the public, and calls for Cummings to be sacked or resign. Prominent politicians in the government, including Johnson, rejected these and expressed support for Cummings. Polling suggested that support for the Conservative Party and confidence in the British government's pandemic response fell as a result of the scandal.

Coffee taverns, one pamphlet stated, must show there are beverages as comforting as beer, that there are beverages to be bought as cheap as beer. And they must provide advantages not provided by such a formidable enemy and by this manoeuvre make victory certain. Accordingly, working-men were encouraged to bring their own food to be cooked free of charge in the tavern's kitchen. Newspapers and games were laid out - also gratis - and customers were encouraged to remain as long as they wanted. Needless to say, none of these coffee taverns survived long on their own.

The blue and white striped stall, topped with Union Jack flags and bold British branding, sells traditional confectionery and artisan fudge to racegoers moving through the circuit's spectator areas.
Food and drink vendors form an important part of the British Grand Prix experience, contributing to the festival atmosphere that surrounds modern Formula One events. Alongside the racing action, spectators spend time browsing merchandise and enjoying sweet treats, reflecting how large sporting events blend entertainment, retail, and leisure.
The image captures crowds of fans walking past the stall under clear summer skies, with temporary grandstands visible in the background at Stowe Corner, one of Silverstone's most recognisable trackside locations. The setting highlights the scale and commercial infrastructure required to support tens of thousands of visitors across a race weekend.
Well suited for editorial use, this photograph illustrates British motorsport culture, event catering, traditional confectionery, and the wider social experience of attending Formula One at Silverstone, where national branding, food, and mass participation come together in a celebratory summer environment.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R9J0EH - The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) is a registered trade union[2] in the United Kingdom for those in the profession of nursing. It was founded in 1916, receiving its royal charter in 1928. Queen Elizabeth II was the patron until her death in 2022. The majority of members are registered nurses
however student nurses and healthcare assistants are also members. There is also a category of membership, at a reduced cost, for retired people.
The RCN describes its mission as representing nurses and nursing, promoting excellence in practice and shaping health policies. It has a network of stewards, safety representatives and union learning representatives as well as advice services for members. Services include a main library in London, and regional libraries. The RCN Institute provides courses for nurses.
History
The College of Nursing Ltd was founded on 27 March 1916, with 34 members, as a professional organisation for trained nurses
In 2018, after a pay agreement was not clearly explained to the membership, the Chief Executive and General Secretary Janet Davies resigned and Dame Donna Kinnair was appointed in an acting capacity. She was confirmed in the role in April 2019. A motion of no confidence in the RCN Council was called shortly afterwards and passed in September 2018 with 78% of votes, but on a turnout when only 3.7% of the membership voted. As well as the Chief Executive and General Secretary, the Director of Member Relations had previously resigned. Twelve of the 17 council members resigned, 10 of them standing for re-election in the subsequent election.
In 2019, the RCN's first strike ? limited to Northern Ireland, over staffing and pay issues?took place
In 2022, the RCN held a strike ballot over pay, held separately across NHS trusts and boards. Its members went on strike as part of the 2022?2023 National Health Service strikes. The RCN commented that from 2010 (the start of the government's austerity programme) to 2022, pay for nurses had fallen by 20%

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAJ36M - Picketing is a form of protest in which people (called pickets or picketers) congregate outside a place of work or location where an event is taking place. Often, this is done in an attempt to dissuade others from going in (crossing the picket line), but it can also be done to draw public attention to a cause. Picketers normally endeavor to be non-violent. It can have a number of aims, but is generally to put pressure on the party targeted to meet particular demands or cease operations. This pressure is achieved by harming the business through loss of customers and negative publicity, or by discouraging or preventing workers or customers from entering the site and thereby preventing the business from operating normally.
Picketing is a common tactic used by trade unions during strikes, who will try to prevent dissident members of the union, members of other unions and non-unionised workers from working. Those who cross the picket line and work despite the strike are known pejoratively as scabs.
In the UK mass picketing was made illegal under the Trade Disputes and Trade Unions Act 1927, moved by the leaders of what would soon be National Labour, after the 1926 General Strike. Otherwise picketing was banned by the Liberal-tabled Criminal Law Amendment Act 1871 but is decriminalised by the Conservative-tabled Conspiracy and Protection of Property Act 1875. The Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 gives protection, under civil law, for pickets who are acting in connection with an industrial dispute at or near their workplace who are using their picketing peacefully to obtain or communicate information or persuading any person to work or abstain from working. However, many employers seek specific injunctions to limit the effect of picketing by their door if they can evidence a high likelihood of intimidation or, in general, on non-peaceful behaviour and/or any that significant numbers of the picketers are or will in all likelihood be non-workers

Police reform in Northern Ireland will not be altered if unionists boycott the board overseeing the changes, the British Government insisted today.
A Northern Ireland Office spokesman rejected claims from the anti-Good Friday Agreement Democratic Unionists that unionists could secure a better policing plan if they united and opposed the current proposals.
As the Rev Ian Paisley's party met at Stormont to consider its response to the Government's plan, the NIO said the package was ''non-negotiable''.
''The Government's position was spelt out very clearly by the Secretary of State on Tuesday,'' a spokesman said.
''The implementation plan is non-negotiable. No rethink will take place. This is the plan.''
The NIO spokesman was responding to DUP deputy leader Peter Robinson's claim that if David Trimble's Ulster Unionists agreed to join them in withholding support for the plan, the reforms could not go ahead.
Signalling his party would not take its seats on the Policing Board if the UUP did not nominate representatives, he claimed: ??At the meeting we held recently with John Reid, he indicated the Government could not proceed with the plan if he could not get, on the one hand the support of either the SDLP, Sinn Fein or both, and on the other, the UUP, DUP or both.
??That was the criteria operated the last time around. The Government's plans were stopped because neither the SDLP nor Sinn Fein would support it and as a result the reforms were made much more acceptable to nationalists in the SDLP.
??The logical argument, therefore, is if unionists do not support this implementation plan, then it cannot succeed. The Government will have to amend it to make it more acceptable to unionists and go back to negotiations.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3YBA2 - This image shows a large-scale Obey street art mural by Shepard Fairey on Hanbury Street in the Spitalfields area of East London. The mural features Fairey's distinctive visual style, with a bold, stylised face rendered in high-contrast colours and graphic symmetry, immediately recognisable from his long-running Obey Giant campaign.
The artwork occupies a prominent brick wall in one of London's most active street art districts, close to Brick Lane and surrounded by layers of graffiti tags, posters, and paste-ups. This constant turnover of visual material reflects the dynamic, contested nature of public space in urban street art culture, where murals are frequently added to, defaced, or recontextualised over time.
Shepard Fairey's work is closely associated with political commentary, counterculture, and anti-authoritarian themes, using visual language influenced by propaganda, punk graphics, and activist design. Its presence in Spitalfields aligns with the area's history of radical politics, migration, and creative subcultures.
The image was photographed in daylight, capturing not only the mural itself but also the surrounding street-level detail, including posters, refuse bags, and street furniture, which ground the artwork in everyday urban life. This photograph is well suited to editorial use covering street art, contemporary urban culture, political art, graffiti, London neighbourhoods, and the global influence of Shepard Fairey's Obey movement.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PM1FHK - U-turn on onshore windfarms likely after Tory rebellion - more at https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/nov/29/onshore-windfarm-restrictions-ministers-rebel
Ministers will make an announcement on a ban on onshore windfarms in the coming days, including potential tweaks to the levelling up bill, in the face of a growing rebellion by Conservative MPs.
The culture secretary, Michelle Donelan, gave the strongest hint yet that the government is preparing to lift the de facto onshore wind ban after the number of public rebels grew to 34 on Monday night.
The government all but confirmed on Monday that restrictions on onshore wind would be changed in the face of the revolt, led by the former levelling up secretary Simon Clarke and endorsed by Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, as well as the former chief whip Wendy Morton.
Donelan said changes were set to be announced by Michael Gove before the bill's return to parliament. The government is listening to colleagues around this amendment and I'm sure that there will be some announcements made by the levelling up secretary in the days to come, she told GB News.
Members from around the house put down amendments, including senior members of parliament, and then there are discussions between ministers and those members.
And there are tweaks sometimes made to bills, sometimes people stand their amendment down because they haven't realised the other elements of the legislation. It's all part of the legislative process.
The Guardian understands 34 MPs have signed the amendment, which would evaporate Sunak's majority because Labour will back Clarke's amendment, putting Sunak at risk of a Commons defeat.
Labour is also tabling a beefed-up amendment on onshore wind, highlighting the limitations of the Conservative rebel amendment. It would remove the onerous planning restrictions that effectively ban new onshore wind in England but also require local authorities to proactively identify opportunities for renewables, incl

the meaning has not been resolved with certainty, but latest scholarship concludes that the first element preserves a pre-British noun cilta, 'steep hill', here referring to the Cotswold scarp
the second element may mean 'settlement' or 'water-meadow'. As a royal manor, it features in the earliest pages of the Gloucestershire section of Domesday Book where it is named Chintenham

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K6GYK8 - Paddington, also known as London Paddington, is a Central London railway terminus and London Underground station complex, located on Praed Street in the Paddington area. The site has been the London terminus of services provided by the Great Western Railway and its successors since 1838. Much of the main line station dates from 1854 and was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
Paddington is the London terminus of the Great Western Main Line
passenger services are primarily operated by Great Western Railway, which provides commuter and regional passenger services to west London and the Thames Valley region, as well as long-distance intercity services to South West England and South Wales. The station is also the eastern terminus for Heathrow Express and the western terminus for Elizabeth line services from Shenfield. Elizabeth line services also run through Paddington westwards to Reading, Heathrow Terminal 5, and Heathrow Terminal 4, and eastwards to Abbey Wood. Situated in fare zone 1, it has two separate tube stations providing connections to the Bakerloo, Circle, District, and Hammersmith & City lines. It is one of 11 London stations managed directly by Network Rail.
The station has been perennially popular for passengers and goods, particularly milk and parcels. Major upgrades took place in the 1870s, the 1910s and the 1960s, each trying to add additional platforms and space while trying to preserve the existing services and architecture as much as possible. Paddington was first served by London Underground trains in 1863, as the original western terminus of the Metropolitan Railway, the world's first underground railway. In the 20th century, suburban and commuter services appeared at Paddington as the urban sprawl of London moved westwards. Despite the numerous upgrades and rebuilding, plus damage sustained in particular during World War II, Brunel's original design is still recognisable.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD2421 - This image shows a burlap coffee sack marked Product of Colombia ? 70kg, photographed under warm ambient lighting that highlights the woven texture of the hessian material and the stencilled lettering. Such sacks are traditionally used to transport and store green coffee beans prior to roasting, forming a familiar visual symbol of the global coffee trade.
Colombia is one of the world's most recognisable coffee-producing countries, particularly associated with high-quality arabica beans grown in mountainous regions. The sack's utilitarian design reflects the agricultural and export origins of coffee before it reaches caf??s, roasteries, and consumers.
The warm lighting and close framing suggest an interior setting such as a caf??, coffee roastery, or specialty coffee shop, where sacks like this are often reused as d??cor to emphasise authenticity, provenance, and ethical sourcing. The image works well to illustrate themes of fair-trade coffee, sustainable consumption, global supply chains, and artisan coffee culture.
The photograph provides a tactile, atmospheric view of coffee as an agricultural commodity, connecting everyday caf?? experiences with their international origins.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD2424 - This image shows a freshly prepared cappuccino served in a ceramic cup and saucer, accompanied by a teaspoon and placed on a wooden table. The coffee is topped with a layer of foamed milk lightly dusted with cocoa or chocolate powder, giving it a warm and inviting appearance.
The neutral-toned crockery and natural wood surface suggest a relaxed community caf?? environment, typical of independent or socially focused caf??s that emphasise ethical sourcing and fair-trade coffee. The close-up composition highlights the texture of the foam and the warmth of the drink, creating a comforting, everyday caf?? scene.
Cappuccino is a popular espresso-based drink enjoyed throughout the UK, commonly associated with informal socialising, coffee breaks, and community spaces. Images like this are often used to illustrate themes of local caf?? culture, ethical consumption, and simple pleasures in daily life.
The photograph works well for editorial, lifestyle, food, and hospitality contexts, offering a timeless representation of coffee culture without identifiable branding.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K16ARC - The Meeting Place is a 9-metre-high (30 ft), 20-tonne (20-long-ton) bronze sculpture that stands at the south end of the upper level of St Pancras railway station. Designed by the British artist Paul Day and unveiled in 2007, it is intended to evoke the romance of travel through the depiction of a couple locked in an amorous embrace.
The statue, which stands in the Eurostar terminal, is reported to have cost ?1 million and was installed as the centrepiece of the refurbished station. The work, commissioned by London and Continental Railways, is modelled on the sculptor and his wife
The sculpture received a poor critical reception, being cited by Antony Gormley as a very good example of the crap out there, comparing it to other examples of public art in the UK,[4] and later referred to as a terrible, schmaltzy, sentimental piece of kitsch by Tim Marlow of the Royal Academy of Arts. Jeremy Deller dismissed it as barely a work of art. Day commented that lot of people will no doubt detest it because it is not violent or controversial.
Further controversy was caused by Day's 2008 planned addition of a bronze relief frieze around the plinth. Originally depicting a commuter falling into the path of an Underground train driven by the Grim Reaper, Day believed the piece to be a tragi-comic style and was supposed to be a metaphor for the way people's imaginations ran wild but revised the frieze before the final version was installed.
Despite harsh criticism from major figures in the British art world, the statue has become popular with the public and contributed to its perception of St Pancras. In 2011, an edition of The World's Most Romantic Spots by Lonely Planet described the station as one of the most romantic meeting places in the world, citing the statue as a key reason

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JG2205 - Bumper cars or dodgems are the generic names for a type of flat amusement ride consisting of multiple small electrically powered cars which draw power from the floor and/or ceiling, and which are turned on and off remotely by an operator. Bumper cars were not intended to be bumped, hence the original name Dodgem. They are also known as bumping cars, dodging cars and dashing cars. The first patent for bumper cars was filed in 1921
The cars are commonly powered by one of three methods. The oldest and most common method, the Over Head System (OHS), uses a conductive floor and ceiling with opposing power polarities. Contacts under the vehicle touch the floor while a pole-mounted contact shoe touches the ceiling, forming a complete circuit.
A newer method, the Floor Pick-Up (FPU) system, uses alternating strips of metal across the floor separated by insulating spacers, and no ceiling grid. The strips carry the supply current, and the cars are large enough so that the vehicle covers at least two strips at all times. An array of brushes under each car makes random contact with the strips, and the voltage polarity on each contact is arranged to always provide a correct and complete circuit to operate the vehicle.
A third method is used on Quantum-class cruise ships, where bumper cars run on electric batteries. This avoids the conductive floor/ceiling of the traditional bumper car setup, allowing the SeaPlex venue to be convertible from a bumper-car ride to a multipurpose gym (basketball court). The disadvantage is that these ships' bumper cars take several hours to recharge.
The metal floor is usually set up as a rectangular or oval track, and graphite is sprinkled on the floor to decrease friction. A rubber bumper surrounds each vehicle, and drivers either ram or dodge each other as they travel. The controls are usually an accelerator and a steering wheel. The cars can be made to go backwards by turning the steering wheel far enough in either direction

The club moved to its current home of Broad Lane in 1892 with a new clubhouse. There have been several new clubhouses built on the existing site with the most recent developments coming in the late 1980's with significant improvements to the facilities in 2011.
In the early days the club played a number of friendly matches. Grappers then played regular fixtures up to the 2nd World War. In 1939, before war broke out, Grappers were founder members of the North Cheshire League but the league was stopped at the start of the war and was never resumed. From the 1960's onwards GCC were members of the Manchester Association which was the prelude to the clubs most successful period.
The 70's & 80's ? the golden years
In 1981, after a couple of good seasons following promotion to the top division in the late 70's, the 1st XI won the top flight for the first time. One of Grappenhall's best teams, it included some famous Grappers names such as Duncan Martindale, Rick Houghton, Chris Ashton, Neil Titchard, Jim Green, Nick Sharp and a young Neil Fairbrother, only a few years before he headed off for big things with Lancashire and England.
In 1982, the 1st XI went one better, this time winning the league and cup double with the HC Cup Final being one of a number of appearances the club mate at Old Trafford in the 80's. The double was repeated in 1987 with another appearance at Old Trafford, this time with the team including another future Lancashire star and future Grappers captain in Steve Titchard. In the same season, the 2nd XI also tasted success by winning the Worthington Cup. There were a number of other cup successes for the club during this period for the different senior and junior teams, with many a memorable game taking place and the tales still being regaled today.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D9H1A3 - The Environment Agency (EA) is a non-departmental public body, established in 1995 and sponsored by the United Kingdom government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), with responsibilities relating to the protection and enhancement of the environment in England
The EA provides Flood and coastal risk management, Activities to reduce likelihood of flooding
Activities to reduce consequences of flooding, Environment and business, Climate change, Air quality, Land quality, Water quality, Water resources, Fishing, Navigation, Other marine responsibilities, Equipment and Fleet, Consultation and influencing, Advice to Government, Regional organisation
The Environment Agency's remit covers almost the whole of England, about 13 million hectares of land, 22,000 miles (35,000 km) of river and 3,100 miles (5,000 km) of coastline seawards to the three-mile limit which includes 2 million hectares of coastal waters. In a sharing arrangement with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), it also exercises some of its functions over parts of the catchments of the River Tweed and the Border Esk which are, for the most part, in Scotland. Similarly, in an arrangement with NRW, political and operational areas are not coterminus. NRW staff exercise responsibility for parts of the River Dee (Wales) in England and EA staff exercise operational responsibility for those parts of the River Severn catchment in Wales.
Structure
The Environment Agency employs around 11,200 staff. It is organised into eight directorates that report to the chief executive. There are two policy and process directorates. One deals with Flood and Coastal Risk Management and the other with Environment and Business. These are backed up by the Evidence directorate. The fourth directorate is a single Operations delivery unit, responsible for national services, and line management of all the Regional and Area staff.
The remaining directorates are central shared service groups

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ADR2G5 - Parking on public land and parking on private land are areas that are governed by different sets of rules and enforcement processes.
For the most part, parking on public land is governed by rules set down by local councils and enforced by traffic wardens and/or the police.
Parking on private land, by contrast, is governed by the rules of the contract between the driver and the landowner. It is enforced by the landowner and/or agents working on their behalf
There are two ways a Parking Charge Notice can be served. One is as a ticket on the car and the other is by post to the registered owner's address.
As a rule of thumb, if you are served with a ticket it is well worth checking out whether or not the issuing car park is a member of an Accredited Trade Association (ATA). If they are, they will be able to get your contact details from the DVLA, which they can then use to pursue further legal action in the event of non-response
If you were breaking the rules, then the most sensible and ethical course of action is just to pay up as quickly as you can. ATA members have to offer a discount for early payment. If, however, you think you are being unfairly penalized, then you can write to the operator and request the notice be revoked.
Generally, you will need to demonstrate one (or both) of two points, either you did not break the rules (they made a mistake) or the rules were unenforceable, for example, they were not clearly displayed so you could not reasonably be expected to be aware of them.
If the operator refuses to revoke the notice you can then proceed to formal appeal if you wish.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFP0FN - The Frankfurt Christmas Market and Craft Market is an annual outdoor Christmas market and craft fair held in central Birmingham, England. The market started in 2001 with 24 stalls and has expanded every year. It opens in mid November and continues until late December, closing just before Christmas.
The Christmas Market and Craft Fair is located in Centenary Square, Chamberlain Square, New Street, and Victoria Square. It is the largest such market outside Germany and Austria, attracting over 3.1 million visitors in 2010, over 5 million visitors in 2011, almost 5 million visitors in 2013 and over 5.5 million visitors in 2014. German food and drink such as Bratwurst and Gl?hwein are available.
On 15 November 2018, after an inspection by Birmingham City Council's environmental health officials, twenty of the market's food stalls were ordered to improve hygiene . Two further stalls were summarily closed for failing to display mandatory allergen advice. When reinspected on 20 November, all the stalls were found to meet the required standards.
The market is affiliated with the Frankfurt Christmas Market in the city of Frankfurt, one of the oldest such markets in Germany (dating from 1393), hence the name. Birmingham is twinned with Frankfurt.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAEJ0P - In the times before you could buy a ruler in your local stationers or a tape measure in a hardware store, people estimated the length of objects from the lengths of parts of their body. For example:
(i) An inch is roughly the length of the end of your thumb (i.e. from the joint to its end)
(ii) A foot is what you would expect, i.e. the length of a foot, originally the length of the Kings foot.
(iii) A yard was a Bowmans pull (i.e. from your breastbone to your hand).
Such rules of thumb are adequate if all that is required is a rough estimate of the length of an object, but you can imagine the arguments that would ensue if you were buying or selling cloth for example. If you are selling cloth you would make the most profit if you used someone with short arms as your measure, however if you are a tailor buying cloth, you would prefer someone with long arms! To ensure fair trading, standards of measurements were provided in public places in towns and cities throughout the UK.
The chain is the unit of measure used by surveyors, as recently as 50 years ago a young apprentice surveyor was sent to George Square to check the length of his company's chain against the length of the standard chain. In the days before metrication every child had to learn 3 feet make a yard, 22 yards make a chain, 10 chains make a furlong and 8 furlongs make a mile.
There are three sets of measurement standards to be found in George Square:
(a) The standard inch, foot, 2 foot, and 3 foot are mounted on the wall of the City Chambers (locate them on the right hand side of the entrance to the City Chambers as you face the building with your back to the Square).
(b) There is a standard chain with its links in the Square (locate these between the benches and the grassed area on the east side of square.)
(c) 100 feet. (Again these are located beside the benches, this time at the grassed area at the west side.)

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT2T5 - The City Chambers or Municipal Buildings in Glasgow, Scotland, has functioned as the headquarters of Glasgow City Council since 1996, and of preceding forms of municipal government in the city since 1889, located on the eastern side of the city's George Square. An eminent example of Victorian civic architecture, the building was constructed between 1882 and 1888 to a competition winning design by Scottish architect William Young. a native of Paisley.
Inaugurated in August 1888 by Queen Victoria, the first council meeting was held within the chambers in October 1889. The building originally had an area of 5,016 m2 (53,990 sq ft). In 1923, an extension to the east side of the building in John Street was opened and in 1984 Exchange House in George Street was completed, increasing the size of the City Chambers complex to some 14,000 m2

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A4PJNH - It is a pretty obvious concept that service areas - which are built to serve motorists - should provide parking. Specifically, parking for all vehicles must be provided free for at least two hours, with more detail given below.
A significant portion of formal complaints regarding motorway service areas relate to parking. How can something so simple go so wrong? There appears to be a mismatch between what customers expect and what they are offered.
For specific queries and complaints you should contact the operator, who are likely to ask anybody complaining about a penalty charge to follow the appeals procedure sent to them.
All official motorway and A-road service areas - that is those with official road signs directing people to them - must provide at least two hours free parking for all road users who are entitled to use the facility. This free short stay must be provided regardless of whether the driver intends to leave the car or not. Older facilities may not be able to provide dedicated parking for each class of vehicle, instead relying on a generic 'long vehicles' area.
The two hour free period has been enshrined in government policy since 1979, on the basis that a motorway service area's primary function is to cater for the immediate needs of motorists and that two hours was considered sufficient. While motorway services can make handy places for car-sharing or meetings, this is not meant to be their priority. There is no rule that charges must apply after two hours, but convention is that all operators charge after two or three hours (four hours is common in Ireland). There is no rule preventing services from asking people to leave after two hours. Buying food or drinks does not absolve the customer of the need to pay for parking.
Note that the rule merely states that two hours free parking must be available, it doesn't state that all parking spaces must be free. There have been reports that some petrol stations are charging vehicles for parking.

Daresbury was the birthplace of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland author Lewis Carroll, in All Saints' Vicarage. Daresbury has a Lewis Carroll Visitor Centre and the parish church, All Saints, a Lewis Carroll window, including an image of the Cheshire Cat.Lewis Carroll as born 27 January 1832 ? 14 January 1898.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel by English author Lewis Carroll (the pseudonym of Charles Dodgson). It tells of a young girl named Alice, who falls through a rabbit hole into a subterranean fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with children.
The Daniell Chapel contains one of the best-known features of All Saints', the Lewis Carroll Memorial Window. To mark the centenary of his birth, Carroll enthusiasts from all over the world subscribed to a memorial fund, which resulted in a gift to All Saints' of this striking and unusual stained glass window, dedicated in 1935.
The window was designed by the stained glass artist Geoffrey Webb and depicts a Nativity scene, at which both Carroll and Alice are present. Below the Nativity scene are 5 panels illustrated with characters and scenes from Alice in Wonderland including the White Rabbit, the Lizard, the Dodo, the Caterpillar, Fish-Footman, Mad Hatter, Dormouse, March Hare, Duchess, Gryphon, Mock Turtle, Knave and Queen of Hearts. The famous Cheshire Cat can be found in the centre of the fifth panel. The 3 centre panels contain verses from the Lewis Carroll's poem ?Christmas Greetings (From a Fairy to a Child)'.
Geoffrey Webb's mark was a spider's web that he would incorporate into the design of his windows. The web can be found in the fifth section of the Window, just above the Queen of Hearts and includes the date ?1935'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RMJ3B8 - Regent Street is a major shopping street in the West End of London. It is named after George, the Prince Regent (later George IV) and was laid out under the direction of the architect John Nash and James Burton. It runs from Waterloo Place in St James's at the southern end, through Piccadilly Circus and Oxford Circus, to All Souls Church. From there Langham Place and Portland Place continue the route to Regent's Park.
The street's layout was completed in 1825 and was an early example of town planning in England, replacing earlier roads including Swallow Street. Nash and Burton's street layout has survived, although all the original buildings except All Souls Church have been replaced following reconstruction in the late 19th century. The street is known for its flagship retail stores, including Liberty, Hamleys, Jaeger and the Apple Store. The Royal Polytechnic Institution, now the University of Westminster, has been based on Regent Street since 1838.
Regent Street is approximately 0.8 miles (1.3 km) long and begins at a junction with Charles II Street as a continuation of Waterloo Place. It runs north to Piccadilly Circus, where it turns left before curving round the Quadrant to head north again, meeting Oxford Street at Oxford Circus. It ends at a junction with Cavendish Place and Mortimer Street near the BBC Broadcasting House, with the road ahead being Langham Place, followed by Portland Place.
The southern section of the road is one-way northbound and part of the A4, a major road through West London. From Piccadilly Circus northwards, it is numbered A4201, though in common with roads inside the London congestion charging zone, the number does not appear on signs.
Nearby tube stations are Charing Cross, Piccadilly Circus and Oxford Circus
the lattermost being one of the busiest underground stations in London, and is where three main lines (Central, Bakerloo and Victoria) meet. Several bus routes, such as 6, 12, and 13, run along Regent Street

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P8KEYR - Doncaster is a large town in South Yorkshire, England. Together with its surrounding suburbs and settlements, the town forms part of the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, which had a mid-2017 est. population of 308,900. The town itself has a population of 109,805 The Doncaster Urban Area had a population of 158,141 in 2011 and includes Doncaster and neighbouring small villages. Part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974, Doncaster is about 17 miles (30 km) north-east of Sheffield, with which it is served by an international airport, Doncaster Sheffield Airport in Finningley. Under the Local Government Act 1972, Doncaster was incorporated into a newly created metropolitan borough in 1974, itself incorporated with other nearby boroughs in the 1974 creation of the metropolitan county of South Yorkshire.
Doncaster is represented in the House of Commons by three MPs
all three constituencies are currently held by Labour. Rosie Winterton represents Doncaster Central, former Labour Party leader, Ed Miliband represents Doncaster North, and Caroline Flint represents Don Valley.
At a European level, Doncaster is part of the Yorkshire and the Humber constituency and is represented by six MEPs.
Doncaster is one of only twelve UK boroughs to have a directly-elected mayor, a position currently held by Labour's Ros Jones.
In September 2014, UKIP held its annual party conference at Doncaster Racecourse. UKIP party leader Nigel Farage claimed that by holding the conference in Doncaster, UKIP were now parking our tanks on the Labour Party's lawn referring to Labour leader Ed Miliband's Doncaster North constituency. Shortly afterwards in the seat, at the 2015 general election, UKIP won 8,928 votes to Labour's 20,708. In the 2016 EU Referendum, however, Doncaster voted 69% to leave the European Union

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy MXFF3X - In sociology and political studies, diversity is the degree of differences in identifying features among the members of a purposefully defined group, such as any group differences in racial or ethnic classifications, age, gender, religion, philosophy, physical abilities, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation, gender identity, intelligence, mental health, physical health, genetic attributes, personality, behavior or attractiveness.
When measuring human diversity, a diversity index exemplifies the likelihood that two randomly selected residents have different ethnicities. If all residents are of the same ethnic group it's zero by definition. If half are from one group and half from another, it is .50. The diversity index does not take into account the willingness of individuals to cooperate with those of other ethnicities

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P53BW0 - Govan Scottish Gaelic: Baile a' Ghobhainn) is a district, parish, and former burgh now part of south-west City of Glasgow, Scotland. It is situated 2.5 miles (4.0 km) west of Glasgow city centre, on the south bank of the River Clyde, opposite the mouth of the River Kelvin and the district of Partick. Historically it was part of the County of Lanark.
According to medieval legend, Constantine, a seventh-century King of Strathclyde, founded a monastery under the rule of Columbanus in Govan. During the Middle Ages, Govan was the site of a ferry which linked the area with Partick for seasonal cattle drovers. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, textile mills and coal mining were important
in the early-nineteenth century, shipbuilding emerged as Govan's principal industry. In 1864, Govan gained burgh status, and was the fifth-largest burgh in Scotland. It was incorporated into the City of Glasgow in 1912

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy E6JB5B - There has been a pub called The Red Lion on this site ever since 1788. The one you see today was constructed in 1821 and, thanks to surviving the Blitz completely intact, has become one of London's rare examples of original ornate Victoriana at its finest.
Uniquely, the pub is full of specially commissioned glasswork, with much of it thought to have been created by the renowned Walter Gibb and Sons of Blackfriars, using some of the most advanced engraving and etching techniques available at the time. While nobody is sure why there are so many mirrors, one theory is that they were deliberately commissioned by a local magistrate at the time in order to reduce the privacy of the pub's snugs, and therefore smiting the activity of local women of the night.
Whatever the reason, it has led to The Red Lion being described as 'a perfect example of the small Victorian gin palace at its best' by Architectural Review, and it really is a window into life in the late 19th century.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K5J0BH - These underground toilets in St Giles' were built in 1895. They were for gentlemen only, as there was no question in Victorian times of building an outdoor public convenience for women.
Work on excavating the site had started by 17 August 1895, when the following report appeared in Jackson's Oxford Journal:
DISCOVERY OF RELICS.? During the excavation which has been made in connection with the new underground public convenience in St. Giles's the workmen came upon a large quantity of bones and horns, apparently those of oxen and deer, at a depth of about 7ft., a pair of horns being in excellent preservation
they also found a stoneware jug, minus the handle and broken at the spout, and two small cups made of red pottery and glazed, both much damaged.
Toilet railings
The work was completed by 12 October 1895, when Jackson's Oxford Journal reported:
Corporation works
An underground convenience has been built near the southern end of St. Giles-street, containing two w.c.'s and four urinals. These are reached by a flight of York stone steps from the surface of the street, and the structure is surrounded by a strong cast-iron railing on York stone base. The fittings are in the best white glazed ware, and the whole of the brickwork is lined internally with white and buff glazed bricks, the floor being of vitrified tiles laid upon concrete. The convenience is roofed with cement concrete carried upon steel girders, with pavement lights, cast-iron ventilators, &c.
There was originally just one entrance (the present southern one), and the railings surrounding are inscribed with the name of their maker, LUCY & CO, OXFORD (right) A second entrance with matching railings was built at a later date.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYHEN - A cupcake (also British English: fairy cake
Hiberno-English: bun
Australian English: fairy cake or patty cake) is a small cake designed to serve one person, which may be baked in a small thin paper or aluminum cup. As with larger cakes, icing and other cake decorations such as fruit and candy may be applied.
The earliest extant description of what is now often called a cupcake was in 1796, when a recipe for a light cake to bake in small cups was written in American Cookery by Amelia Simmons. The earliest extant documentation of the term cupcake itself was in Seventy-five Receipts for Pastry, Cakes, and Sweetmeats in 1828 in Eliza Leslie's Receipts cookbook.
In the early 19th century, there were two different uses for the term cup cake or cupcake. In previous centuries, before muffin tins were widely available, the cakes were often baked in individual pottery cups, ramekins, or molds and took their name from the cups they were baked in. This is the use of the name that has remained, and the name of cupcake is now given to any small, round cake that is about the size of a teacup. While English fairy cakes vary in size more than American cupcake, they are traditionally smaller and are rarely topped with elaborate icing.
The other kind of cup cake referred to a cake whose ingredients were measured by volume, using a standard-sized cup, instead of being weighed. Recipes whose ingredients were measured using a standard-sized cup could also be baked in cups
however, they were more commonly baked in tins as layers or loaves. In later years, when the use of volume measurements was firmly established in home kitchens, these recipes became known as 1234 cakes or quarter cakes, so called because they are made up of four ingredients: one cup of butter, two cups of sugar, three cups of flour, and four eggs. They are plain yellow cakes, somewhat less rich and less expensive than pound cake, due to using about half as much butter and eggs compared to pound cake.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYJ18 - Grappenhall Cricket Club played its first game in 1881 on a ground in Bellhouse Lane.

'Steam' is the second single from Peter Gabriel's 1992 album, Us. It reached number 10 on the UK singles chart.
Peter Gabriel has said that the song is about a relationship in which the woman is sophisticated, bright, cultured, and knows everything about anything and that the man knows nothing about anything, except, he does know about the woman, and she doesn't know much about herself.
An alternate version of this song called 'Quiet Steam' was a B-side on the 'Digging in the Dirt' single. It is a very lo-fi take on the popular version that appeared on the album. On Secret World Live, 'Steam' is preceded for a minute or so by the 'Quiet Steam' version.
As you will probably know, Peter Brian Gabriel (born 1950) is a British singer, musician, and songwriter who rose to fame as the lead vocalist and flautist of the 1970's progressive rock group Genesis.
After leaving Genesis in 1975, Gabriel went on to a successful solo career. More recently he has focused on producing and promoting world music and pioneering digital distribution methods for music. He has also been involved in various humanitarian efforts. In 2007 Gabriel was honoured as a BMI Icon at the 57th annual BMI London Awards for his \u201cinfluence on generations of music makers.\u201d
Gabriel was also awarded the Polar Music Prize in 2009 and inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010.
A Showman's road locomotive or showman's engine is a steam-powered road-going 'locomotive' designed to provide power and transport for a travelling fair or circus. Similar to other road-going traction engines, showman's engines were normally distinguished by the addition of a full-length canopy, a dynamo mounted in front of the chimney, and brightly coloured paintwork with ornate decorations. The dynamo was used to generate electricity to illuminate and power various fairground rides. Although originally the ride's motion was powered by an internal steam engine, some later rides were driven direct from the showman's engine via a belt drive.
The one shown here is the John Murphys proud Peacocks Fowler B6 traction Engine. Seen here at the 2011 Cheshire Steam fair, held at Daresbury near Warrington 9th July 2011.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HE18CR - The Northern Ireland Housing Executive is the public housing authority for Northern Ireland. It is the enforcing authority for those parts of housing orders that involve houses with multiple occupants, houses that are unfit, and housing conditions.
The Housing Executive was established in 1971 by the Housing Executive Act (Northern Ireland).
The creation of the Housing Executive is linked to the civil disturbances in Northern Ireland throughout the 1960s.[citation needed] Prior to 1971, the allocation of public housing was the responsibility of local councils in Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Housing Trust. In June 1968, Dungannon Rural District Council was accused of discriminating against a Catholic family when it allocated a new council house in the Caledon area to a young single Protestant woman with links to a local Unionist politician. This incident proved to be the catalyst for the ensuing civil rights marches in Dungannon and Derry that ultimately led to widespread civil disturbance.
In his Parliamentary report on the following disturbances, Lord Cameron concluded that there was:
A rising sense of continuing injustice and grievance among large sections of the Catholic population in Northern Ireland, in particular in Derry and Dungannon, in respect of (i) inadequacy of housing provision by certain local authorities (ii) unfair methods of allocation of houses built and let by such authorities, in particular
refusals and omissions to adopt a 'points' system in determining priorities and making allocations (iii) misuse in certain cases of discretionary powers of allocation of houses in order to perpetuate Unionist control of the local authority.
A single all-purpose housing authority for Northern Ireland had been advocated as early as 1964 by the Northern Ireland Labour Party but it was not until the British Home Secretary, James Callaghan, visited the Stormont Government in the wake of the Belfast Riots of August 1969 it was created

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5666139680 - 'The Playfair steps pay homage to architect William Henry Playfair FRSE (15 July 1790 \u2013 19 March 1857). Leading from the top of Market Street down to the square at the Mound, The Art Galleries, Princes Street and Princes Street Gardens.
Although they are as old as Auld Reekie herself, the current name dates from only just over 30 years ago.
They were renamed Playfair Steps by then Rt Hon Lord Provest, Kenneth W Borthwick on 21st April 1978. He held that post from 1977.
They were originally, The Mound Steps 1853/1972, then John Knox Way 1972/78 before Playfair steps 78 onwards. Thanks to Nicola for helping me with the history.
He was undoubtedly one of the greatest Scottish architects of the 19th century, designer of many of Edinburgh's neo-classical landmarks in the New Town.
Two of his finest works are the neo-classical buildings of the National Gallery of Scotland and the Royal Scottish Academy which are situated in the centre of Edinburgh, to the left of these steps. The Playfair Project completed in 2004 joined the two historic buildings with an underground link.
He was greatly inspired by a trip to Athens.
Playfair died in Edinburgh on 19 March 1857, and is buried in Edinburgh's Dean Cemetery, where he designed a number of monuments for others, including Lord Jeffrey.
This is an infrared shot taken with a 720nm adapted SLR. It is more convenient to use than using a Hoya R72 for IR. This spring day was heavy in infrared.
Hopefully this will be a distraction for everyone hooked today on the Kate (Catherine) Middleton and Prince William royal wedding at Westminster Abbey. In different times it might have taken place in Edinburgh and there may have been several monarchs, kings &
queens in what is now the UK. Just some food for thought. Enjoy your day if you are watching it on TV or just spending the morning buying some 3x2 at Homebase.

Breaking up is hard to do. Champagne &

The Secret Machines are a three-piece American alternative rock band. Originally from Dallas, Texas before moving to New York City, they describe their band as space rock. The original lineup consisted of two brothers, Brandon and Benjamin Curtis, and Josh Garza. In March 2007, Benjamin left the band, and was replaced by Phil Karnats.
In 2004, The Secret Machines released their first full length CD - Now Here Is Nowhere. Their second EP, The Road Leads Where It's Led, was released on 7 June 2005. The song 'Nowhere Again', from the their debut album, was used in promotional spots for American during its launch, and appeared in the 2006 videogame Driver: Parallel Lines.
Ten Silver Drops, their second album, leaked onto file sharing websites following the release of this excellent single 'Alone, Jealous and Stoned' in the UK. The album once again did not sell well but saw some favorable reviews. Benjamin Curtis left the band on March 3, 2007 to focus full time on his new band, School of Seven Bells.
The Secret Machines have three tracks on the soundtrack for the 2007 film Across the Universe, which highlights the music of the Beatles, set to the story of a handful of characters living out the songs. They perform 'I Am the Walrus' with Bono singing
an instrumental, 'Flying' and 'Blue Jay Way' in their notable style.

If you have not seen them before, 'Love Hearts' are a type of confectionery manufactured by Swizzels Matlow in the UK. They are hard, fizzy, tablet-shaped sweets in a variety of fruit flavours featuring a short, love-related message on one side of the sweet.
Love Hearts currently come in six flavours, each associated with a colour.
1.White (a plain, sherbet-like, slightly tart vanilla flavour - Weakest Flavour)
2.Yellow (a sherbet-like flavour with a distinct sharp lemon aftertaste)
3.Orange (a sweet flavour with a slight orange aftertaste)
4.Green (a slightly lime flavour with a sherbet-like aftertaste)
5.Purple (an unusual, slightly perfumed berry-like flavour with a strong aftertaste)
6.Red (cherry flavour - Strongest)
Sample messages include:
Be My Love, Just Me, Hug Me, Bye Bye, Dream Girl, Dream Boy, Cutie Pie, New Love, Call Me, Nice Girl, Hi Buddy, Love You, U Rock, Its Love, Tease Me, I Love You.
Lately you can also sometimes find 'Luv U 24/7', 'Email Me' and 'Page Me', bringing them into the 21st century.
Production of Love Hearts began in 1933 with the formation of Swizzels Ltd., initially in factory premises at Star Lane, Canning Town, London, moving later that year to the larger premises at Drivers Avenue, Plaistow, London. During the Blitz in 1940 production relocated to a disused textile mill in New Mills, Derbyshire, England, UK where it has stayed to this day.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF23TD - Quarry Bank Mill in Cheshire, England, is one of the best preserved textile mills of the Industrial Revolution and is now a museum of the cotton industry. It is a Grade II listed building and is now in the care of the National Trust.
The mill was founded by Samuel Greg (who is represented here), in 1784 in the village of Styal on the River Bollin. Its original iron water wheel was designed by Thomas Hewes and built between 1816 and 1820.
The Hewes wheel finally broke in 1904. After that the River Bollin continued to power the mill, through two water turbines. Today the Mill is home to the most powerful working waterwheel in Europe, an iron water wheel which was originally at Glasshouses Mill at Patley Bridge. This wheel was designed by Sir William Fairbairn, the Scottish engineer who had been an apprentice of Thomas Hewes.
The estate surrounding the mill, also developed by Greg, is the most complete and least altered factory colony of the Industrial Revolution. The estate and mill were donated to the National Trust in 1939 by Alexander Carlton Greg and are open to the public. The mill continued in commercial production until 1959.
The Greg family were Unitarians and built Norcliffe Chapel in Styal village. Their non-conformist religious beliefs provided the Gregs with important business contacts as many of the major Manchester Industrialists were Unitarian. Methodist workers at the mill later sought a place of worship, and the Gregs converted a grain store in Styal village into a Chapel for their use.
In Britain, a cotton mill is a factory that houses spinning and weaving machinery. Typically built between 1775 and 1930, mills spun cotton which was an important product during the Industrial Revolution.
Cotton mills, and the mechanisation of the spinning process, were instrumental in the growth of the machine tool industry, enabling the construction of larger cotton mills. The requirement for water helped stimulate the construction of the canal system too.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AA5PDP - Mostyn Neil Hamilton, AM (born 9 March 1949) is a British politician, non-practising barrister, and former teacher. He has served as a UK Independence Party (UKIP) Member of the National Assembly for Wales for the Mid and West Wales region since 2016
he was previously Conservative MP for the Tatton constituency from 1983 to 1997.
After being implicated (alongside Tim Smith) in the cash-for-questions affair, Hamilton became widely associated with sleaze
he was defeated in the 1997 general election, and subsequently left politics. His wife Christine and he went on to become media celebrities. He left the Conservative Party in 2002, and joined UKIP. He was elected to the National Executive Committee of UKIP in 2011. Following his election to the National Assembly for Wales, he served as UKIP Assembly Group Leader between 2016 and 2018, and has served as Leader of UKIP Wales since 26 September 2016.
In April 2019, Hamilton was the UKIP candidate in the by-election for Newport West. He was third behind the Labour and Conservative candidates with 2,023 votes.
On 20 October 1994, The Guardian published an article which claimed that Hamilton and another minister, Tim Smith, had received money, in the form of cash in brown envelopes. It claimed the money was paid to the men by Mohamed Al-Fayed, the owner of Harrods. In return, the men were to ask questions on behalf of Al-Fayed in the House of Commons. Smith admitted his guilt and resigned immediately. Hamilton claimed innocence but was forced to resign five days later, on 25 October 1994 @HotpixUK

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T09JG6 - Long Descriptive Narrative (Editorial / Documentary)
Close view of an official HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) sign mounted on the exterior of The Old Post Office, 2 The Esplanade, Rochdale OL16 1AE, Greater Manchester. The brushed metal plaque features the Royal Coat of Arms, symbolising the authority of the UK justice system and the administration of courts and tribunals in England and Wales.
HMCTS is an executive agency of the UK Ministry of Justice, responsible for the operation of criminal, civil and family courts, as well as tribunals covering areas such as immigration, employment and social security. The service plays a central role in ensuring access to justice, managing court buildings, listings, staff and digital case systems.
In recent years, HMCTS has been closely associated with wide-ranging court modernisation and reform programmes, including court closures, estate rationalisation and the expansion of digital hearings. These changes have generated significant public and professional debate, with supporters highlighting efficiency and accessibility gains, while critics raise concerns about local access, delays and the impact on vulnerable court users.
The Rochdale site reflects the reuse of historic civic buildings for contemporary public administration, blending heritage architecture with modern government functions. Images such as this are frequently used editorially to illustrate stories relating to justice policy, legal reform, court accessibility, public service delivery and the operation of the UK state.
Photographed in daylight with the official signage clearly legible, the image offers strong editorial value for coverage of law, governance, public administration and the justice system in England and Wales.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M36995 - Edinburgh Playhouse is a theatre in Edinburgh, Scotland. With 3,059 seats it is the second largest theatre in the United Kingdom after the Hammersmith Apollo. The theatre is owned by Ambassador Theatre Group.
The theatre opened on 12 August 1929 as a super-cinema, and was modelled on the Roxy Cinema in New York. It was designed by the specialist cinema architect John Fairweather, most famous for his Green's Playhouse cinema in Glasgow. The original colour scheme was described on opening as follows:
Tones of ivory and stone predominate on the walls, and the roof is decorated with bands of pale green leaves intersected with gold at intervals. The seats in the different parts of the house have been upholstered to harmonise with the general scheme of the decoration. The organ fronts are in Venetian style, and the clock settings, which are square, are neat and attractive.
The building was originally listed Category B in 1974, and this was upgraded by Historic Scotland to Category A in 2008
In recent years, The Playhouse has played host to a wide variety of artists and shows.
It also caters to the youth of the surrounding area who are involved in stage experience projects and youth musicals projects in which children as young as 10, and young adults as old as 21, can take part in shows on the world-famous stage.
It is used as a venue for both the Edinburgh International Festival and Edinburgh Festival Fringe each August
The building is said to be haunted by a ghost called Albert, a man in a grey coat who appears on level six accompanied by a chill in the air. He is variously said to have been either a stagehand who was killed in an accident or a night-watchman who committed suicide

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AEDHXY - A large stadium screen displays the message Checking Penalty during a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester M11 3FF, home of Manchester City FC. The image captures a moment of pause during a live football match, as officials review a potential penalty decision using video technology.
VAR was introduced to elite football to assist referees in making accurate decisions on key incidents such as goals, penalties, red cards and cases of mistaken identity. Its use has significantly changed the rhythm and experience of matches, introducing breaks in play while decisions are reviewed by officials watching multiple camera angles.
Since its introduction in the Premier League, VAR has been the subject of sustained debate among players, managers, fans and commentators. Supporters argue that it improves fairness and reduces clear errors, while critics highlight issues such as delays, marginal decisions and the impact on spontaneous fan celebration. Penalty decisions in particular have proven controversial, often involving fine judgments on contact and intent.
The Etihad Stadium, one of the most modern football grounds in England, features large digital screens designed to communicate decisions to tens of thousands of spectators. Messages such as Checking Penalty have become a familiar part of the contemporary matchday experience, symbolising the increasing role of technology in elite sport.
Photographed during a live match with the crowd visible below the screen, the image offers strong editorial value for themes including technology in football, refereeing controversy, modern sports governance and the changing relationship between fans, officials and decision-making.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R9J0FG - The Northern Ireland Public Service Alliance (NIPSA) is a trade union in Northern Ireland affiliated to the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. It is the largest trade union in Northern Ireland, with around 46,000 members, and is organised into two groups, the Civil Service Group, for the staff of public bodies employed on civil service terms and conditions, and the Public Officers Group, for employees of education and library boards, health and social services boards, the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, district councils, other public bodies and voluntary organisations.
Its current General Secretary is Carmel Gates, and President Brian Smyth.
In the wake of the First World War and Partition of Ireland, the Northern Ireland Civil Service was organised out of the remnants of the Dublin Castle administration. The Unionist Government set up six Ministries (Finance, Home Affairs, Education, Agriculture, Commerce and Labour) and a Prime Minister's Office. It essentially mirrored the set-up in Great Britain, with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance becoming the Head of the Northern Ireland Civil Service.
The earliest incarnation of what was to become NIPSA was the Belfast and District Public Officers' Association (BDPOA), but it was short-lived, down to its own success, when it opened a Derry branch and became the Ulster Public Officers' Association. Its first General Secretary was John Walters
The NICSA, AECS and Civil Service Association merged in 1971 to become NIPSA, with Brendan Harkin as its first General Secretary.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PM1FHM - U-turn on onshore windfarms likely after Tory rebellion - more at https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/nov/29/onshore-windfarm-restrictions-ministers-rebel

It is made up of three interconnected buildings, right in the heart of Edinburgh. The Gallery is home to a major part of Scotland's sensational national collection of fine art
the Academy is one of Europe's premier venues for international exhibitions
and the Gardens Entrance, which lies beneath the two buildings, connects them together with areas for shopping, learning, eating and drinking.
The National Collection
The Gallery houses the national collection of fine art from the early Renaissance to the end of the nineteenth century. Spend an hour strolling around this peaceful setting and you'll find masterpieces from Raphael, El Greco, Vel?zquez and Rubens to Van Gogh, Monet, C??zanne, Degas and Gauguin. For a nation of Scotland's size, the collection is rightfully regarded as one of the very best in the world. The most comprehensive part of the collection covers the history of Scottish painting. All the major names, including Ramsay, Raeburn, Wilkie and McTaggart, are represented in depth. Works on show include Raeburn's much-loved The Reverend Robert Walker Skating on Duddingston Loch or, as it has become known, the ?Skating Minister'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEMX1N - A festive winter dusk scene at the Edinburgh Christmas fair in Princes Street Gardens, showing brightly illuminated amusement rides glowing against a deep blue evening sky in the heart of Scotland's capital city. The image features a traditional helter skelter tower and a swing carousel decorated with red, white and warm golden lights, creating a strong visual contrast with the surrounding darkness and bare winter trees. The lights spill across the gardens, reflecting the lively atmosphere of Edinburgh's annual winter festival.
In the background, historic city centre buildings along Princes Street rise above the gardens, anchoring the fair firmly within Edinburgh's urban landscape. The location, close to the former Jenners department store, is one of the city's most recognisable public spaces and becomes a focal point each winter for seasonal events, attracting residents and tourists alike. Blurred figures moving through the scene suggest crowds in motion, reinforcing the sense of energy, cold-weather activity and festive excitement typical of the Christmas period.
Princes Street Gardens sits between Edinburgh's Old Town and New Town and regularly hosts major civic celebrations. During the winter months it is transformed into a temporary amusement park and Christmas attraction, symbolising the city's role as a cultural and tourism destination during the festive season. The combination of fairground rides, historic architecture, winter trees and twilight lighting conveys themes of celebration, seasonal leisure, urban life and tourism in a European capital city.
This image is well suited for editorial use relating to Christmas, winter festivals, city tourism, seasonal events, public celebrations and Scottish urban life, as well as commercial applications requiring atmospheric winter imagery from a major UK city.
