Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJP7 - This photograph shows a pavement sign outside an opticians in Manchester city centre reading Eye Tests Today, advertising same day eye examinations on the high street. Such signs are a familiar feature of UK town and city centres, reflecting the role of opticians as both healthcare providers and retail businesses offering accessible eye care to the public.
A standard eye test carried out by an optician or optometrist typically involves a range of detailed assessments beyond simply reading letters on a chart. These commonly include visual acuity testing to measure how clearly a person can see at different distances, refraction tests to determine whether glasses or contact lenses are required, and checks for astigmatism, short sightedness, or long sightedness.
Modern eye examinations also routinely assess overall eye health. This can include examining the retina and optic nerve using specialist lighting and imaging, measuring intraocular pressure to screen for glaucoma, and checking eye coordination and movement. Some practices offer retinal photography or optical coherence tomography scans, which can help detect early signs of conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, or hypertension related changes.
Taken in daylight on a city pavement, the image documents an everyday aspect of preventative healthcare on the UK high street. It illustrates how opticians provide an important first line of health screening, often identifying wider health issues through routine eye tests, while remaining a visible and accessible part of urban retail life in Manchester and other British cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3YBA2 - This image shows a large-scale Obey street art mural by Shepard Fairey on Hanbury Street in the Spitalfields area of East London. The mural features Fairey's distinctive visual style, with a bold, stylised face rendered in high-contrast colours and graphic symmetry, immediately recognisable from his long-running Obey Giant campaign.
The artwork occupies a prominent brick wall in one of London's most active street art districts, close to Brick Lane and surrounded by layers of graffiti tags, posters, and paste-ups. This constant turnover of visual material reflects the dynamic, contested nature of public space in urban street art culture, where murals are frequently added to, defaced, or recontextualised over time.
Shepard Fairey's work is closely associated with political commentary, counterculture, and anti-authoritarian themes, using visual language influenced by propaganda, punk graphics, and activist design. Its presence in Spitalfields aligns with the area's history of radical politics, migration, and creative subcultures.
The image was photographed in daylight, capturing not only the mural itself but also the surrounding street-level detail, including posters, refuse bags, and street furniture, which ground the artwork in everyday urban life. This photograph is well suited to editorial use covering street art, contemporary urban culture, political art, graffiti, London neighbourhoods, and the global influence of Shepard Fairey's Obey movement.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R7A40M - Born in Vienna, Anna Mahler was the second child of the composer Gustav Mahler and his wife Alma Schindler. They nicknamed her 'Gucki' on account of her big blue eyes (gucken is German for 'peek' or 'peep'). Her childhood was spent in the shadow of her mother's love affairs and famous salon. Anna also suffered the loss of her older sister Maria Mahler (1902?1907) who died of scarlet fever when Anna was three?and her father, who died when she was six. The aftermath of both tragedies coincided with her mother's love affair with the German architect Walter Gropius and her stormy relationship with the Austrian Expressionist painter Oskar Kokoschka. Alma Mahler's second marriage to Gropius, however, provided some semblance of family life during Anna's adolescence?as well as a young half-sister, Manon Gropius (1916?1935).
Anna was educated by tutors and also enjoyed the attention of her mother's friends, which included many of the important artistic figures in music, the visual arts, and literature. As the daughter of the legendary Gustav Mahler, Anna was expected to have a musical career. However, this never materialized. Rather than becoming a professional musician, Anna fell in love with one.
Anna Mahler's exposure to the visual arts began early when she would visit Oskar Kokoschka's studio. She was also a model for her mother-in-law, the painter Broncia Koller-Pinell. After her divorce, Anna studied art and painting on and off in Berlin, Rome, and Paris throughout the 1920s. At the age of twenty-six, she discovered that sculpture was the medium in which she could best express her creativity. Having taken lessons in sculpting in Vienna in 1930 from Fritz Wotruba, she became an established sculptor there, and was awarded the Grand Prix in Paris in 1937.
As well as sculpting successfully in stone, Anna Mahler produced bronze heads of many of the musical giants of the 20th century including Arnold Sch??nberg, Alban Berg, Artur Schnabel, Otto Klemperer, Bruno Walter etc

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RA236D - Malcolm Robert Andrew McLaren (22 January 1946 ? 8 April 2010) was an English impresario, visual artist, singer, songwriter, musician, clothes designer and boutique owner, who combined these activities in an inventive and provocative way. He promoted and managed the bands New York Dolls, the Sex Pistols, and Bow Wow Wow, and recorded music in his own name.
McLaren was brought up by his grandmother after his father, Peter, left the family home, and attended a number of British art colleges and adopted the stance of the social rebel in the style of French revolutionaries the Situationists. McLaren realised that a new protest style was needed for the 1970s,[citation needed] and involved himself in the punk movement, for which he supplied fashions from the Chelsea boutique SEX, which he operated with girlfriend Vivienne Westwood.
After a period advising the New York Dolls in the U.S., McLaren managed the Sex Pistols, for which he recruited the nihilistic frontman Johnny Rotten. The issue of a controversial record, God Save the Queen, satirising the Queen's Jubilee in 1977, was typical of McLaren's shock tactics, and he gained publicity by being arrested after a promotional boat trip outside the Houses of Parliament.
From 1974, McLaren had advised SEX customers Paul Cook and Steve Jones on their musical aspirations, having proposed that one of his shop assistants, Glen Matlock, join them as the bass-player in a group McLaren named Kutie Jones and his Sex Pistols. In the summer of 1975, McLaren ejected the bespectacled guitarist/singer Wally Nightingale from the line-up because he lacked visual appeal.
McLaren's one-time associate Bernie Rhodes (later manager of the Clash) has claimed he spotted a new frontman in another customer, John Lydon, then sporting green hair and torn clothes with the words I hate scribbled on his Pink Floyd T-shirt. Lydon, dubbed Johnny Rotten, joined and McLaren shortened the name to Sex Pistols

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K0KDMR - Penny Lane is a road in the south Liverpool suburb of Mossley Hill. The name also applies to the area surrounding its junction with Smithdown Road and Allerton Road, and to the roundabout at Smithdown Place that was the location for a major bus terminus, originally an important tram junction of Liverpool Corporation Tramways. The roundabout was a frequent stopping place for John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison during their years as schoolchildren and students. Bus journeys via Penny Lane and the area itself subsequently became familiar elements in the early years of the Lennon?McCartney songwriting partnership. In 2009, McCartney reflected:
Penny Lane was kind of nostalgic, but it was really [about] a place that John and I knew ... I'd get a bus to his house and I'd have to change at Penny Lane, or the same with him to me, so we often hung out at that terminus, like a roundabout. It was a place that we both knew, and so we both knew the things that turned up in the story.
Lennon's original lyrics for In My Life had included a reference to Penny Lane. Soon after the Beatles recorded In My Life in October 1965, McCartney mentioned to an interviewer that he wanted to write a song about Penny Lane. A year later, he was spurred to write the song once presented with Lennon's Strawberry Fields Forever. McCartney also cited Dylan Thomas's nostalgic poem Fern Hill as an inspiration for Penny Lane. Lennon co-wrote the lyrics with McCartney. He recalled in a 1970 interview: The bank was there, and that was where the trams sheds were and people waiting and the inspector stood there, the fire engines were down there. It was reliving childhood

History
The facility was established by Francis Woodley Lindsay, a surgeon, in rented premises in Commercial Road as the Herefordshire and South Wales Eye and Ear Institution in 1882. It moved to permanent premises in Eign Street as the Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital in 1888[1] and, after being renamed the Victoria Eye Hospital in 1923, joined the National Health Service in 1948.[2] After services transferred to the new Hereford County Hospital in 2002, the Victoria Eye Hospital closed and has since been converted into apartments

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JC615W - Anger over Grappenhall ?eyesore' site empty for 25 years
ANGER is mounting over an ?eyesore' building in Grappenhall which has been empty for around 25 years.
Grappenhall councillors Ryan Bate and Mike Biggin, along with residents, are growing increasingly frustrated at the condition of the Rectory site, on Church Lane.
Cllr Bate has labelled the state of the property as a ?disgrace'.
It is both an eyesore and a danger ? and has been for too long, he said.
About four years ago Warrington Borough Council (WBC), under pressure from Liberal Democrat councillors, had drawn up plans for a compulsory purchase having gone through a long series of enforcement steps.
Then at the eleventh hour the owner died.
Since then, the ownership has been going through a long and protracted probate process, perhaps deliberately so.
From what I hear, the owners had a number of similar historic properties across Cheshire and their working model seemed to be to allow them to fall into a state of disrepair.
I'm not sure what their endgame would be but could speculate.
The two Liberal Democrat councillors have also vowed to continue pressing council chief executive Steven Broomhead over the situation.
Cllr Bate added: Mike and I are in the process of asking for a further update from WBC and are asking Mr Broomhead to intervene to ensure that this is made a priority as it has been an ongoing issue for too long and no suitable solution seems to be within a satisfactory timeframe.
Town Hall chiefs have acknowledged the concerns from residents as they continue to assess the situation.
A WBC spokesman said: The Rectory has been vacant for approximately 25 years.
Its ownership has been a complex issue and we are prioritising a solution as it is unfair on the residents and visitors to this beautiful part of Grappenhall to continue to witness it in its dilapidated state.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2E018GP - Woolston Weir Hydro project underway at last
long-awaited hydro-electric power installation planned at Woolston Weir since 2013 is finally getting under way.
The scheme which complements the Environment Agency flood defences is being undertaken by Czech company Hydropol and work has begun clearing the site for the arrival of the equipment starting this week.
This renewable energy electricity source will provide sufficient power for 380 typical UK homes and will effectively save in the region of 750 Tonnes of CO2 per year.
The installation will comprise of three Archimedes screw design turbines which are fish friendly. There will also be an improved and brand new fish pass allowing salmon, coarse fish and eels to pass through unharmed.
Locally available national grid connections means there is no need for pylons and there is sufficient separation from residential properties to ensure no operational noise pollution.
It is situated on the opposite bank of the river from Woolston Eyes so poses no threat to any of the wildlife on the local SSSI.
Main construction is planned between August 2020 and January 2021 with turbine delivery in early 2021 and project completion around April 2021.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H4EGAT - Manchester is a city and metropolitan borough in Greater Manchester, England, with a population of 530,300 as of 2015. It lies within the United Kingdom's second-most populous urban area, with a population of 2.8 million. Manchester is fringed by the Cheshire Plain to the south, the Pennines to the north and east, and an arc of towns with which it forms a continuous conurbation. The local authority is Manchester City Council.
The recorded history of Manchester began with the civilian settlement associated with the Roman fort of Mamucium or Mancunium, which was established in about AD 79 on a sandstone bluff near the confluence of the rivers Medlock and Irwell. It was historically a part of Lancashire, although areas of Cheshire south of the River Mersey were incorporated in the 20th century. Throughout the Middle Ages Manchester remained a manorial township but began to expand at an astonishing rate around the turn of the 19th century. Manchester's unplanned urbanisation was brought on by a boom in textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution, and resulted in it becoming the world's first industrialised city. Piccadilly Gardens is a green space in Manchester city centre, England, between Market Street and the edge of the Northern Quarter. Piccadilly runs eastwards from the junction of Market Street with Mosley Street to the junction of London Road with Ducie Street
to the south are the gardens and paved areas. The area was reconfigured in 2002 with a water feature and concrete pavilion by Japanese architect Tadao Ando.

At Paradise in the Vault (venue 29) between the 21st &
27th August 2012 at 22:00 each day, Jack: A Rippers Tale walks you through a London autumn of terror.
As the blurb says:
Every new turn of this bewildering labyrinth reveals some fresh depth of social blackness, some strange and repulsive curiosity of human nature. What are we to do? Where are we to turn? These are the nightmares that haunt every citizen of Whitechapel and chill the spine of all London. With the police no closer to catching the culprit and no sign of the deparavity ceasing, the question is, who can we trust?
Different Device Theatre re-tell the disturbing ledgend that echos through the streets of Whitechapel history. Be thrown into the horror and misery that ruled the every day lives of London citizens during the Rippers Auumn of Terror.
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (The Fringe) is the world's largest arts festival, with the 2012 event spanning 25 days totalling over 2,695 shows from 47 countries in 279 venues. Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place annually in Scotland's capital, in the month of August. The Fringe is a showcase for the performing arts, particularly theatre and comedy (which has seen substantial growth in recent years), although dance and music are also represented. In 2012, 36% of shows were comedy and 28% theatrical productions. Theatrical productions range from the classics of ancient Greece to William Shakespeare, Samuel Beckett and contemporary works. In 2012, 1,418 shows were having their world premiere.
The Fringe is an unjuried festival \u2013 with no selection committee, and therefore any type of performance may participate. The Fringe has often showcased experimental works that might not be invited to a more conservative arts festival. In addition to ticketed, programmed events, the Festival has included a street fair, located primarily on the Royal Mile. The Festival is organized by the Festival Fringe Society, which publishes the programme, sells tickets, and offers advice to performers. Their offices are on the Royal Mile.

'Jamie's Cryin' is a song by Van Halen from their 1978 debut album, Van Halen. The song was written and recorded live during the three week sessions for the album. The song discusses a woman who meets a man that only wants a one-night stand. She turns him down, but is sad for what might have been. Drummer Alex Van Halen identifies this song as his least favorite Van Halen song.
For recording of the song vocalist David Lee Roth wanted to go for a cleaner 'poppier' sound and quit smoking and drinking for a week before the final version was to be recorded. The band noticed the difference on Roth's vocals on what was to be the album version and Ted Templeman ordered him outside to smoke a cigarette. He smoked one, and drank half a bottle of whiskey, returning half an hour later and recording the track with more huskiness to his voice in about 45 minutes.
Eddie Van Halen's melodic line in the song's chorus bears a strong resemblance to the guitar melody in Lalo Schifrin's 1976 jazz instrumental 'Baia.'
'Jamie's Cryin'' was sampled in the 1988 single ' Wild Thing' by Tone Loc.

Sonic Youth's history began when guitarist Thurston Moore moved to New York City in early 1976. Interested in punk, Moore joined the Coachmen, a guitar-based quartet, after arriving in the city. Lee Ranaldo, an art student at Binghamton University, became a fan of the Coachmen, and he and Moore were soon friends.
Ranaldo was a member of Glenn Branca's electric guitar ensemble, touring throughout the US and Europe. After the breakup of the Coachmen, Moore began jamming with Stanton Miranda, whose band, CKM, featured local artist Kim Gordon.
The name Sonic Youth came from combining the nickname of MC5's Fred 'Sonic' Smith with the trend of reggae artists, such as Big Youth.
Sonic Youth signed as the first act on Neutral Records. In December 1981 the group recorded five songs in a studio in New York's Radio City Music Hall. The material was released as the Sonic Youth mini-LP that, while largely ignored, was sent to a few key members of the US press that gave it favorable reviews.
During the 1984 tour of Europe, Sonic Youth's disastrous London debut (where the band's equipment malfunctioned and Moore consequently destroyed the equipment onstage in frustration) actually resulted in rave reviews in Sounds and the NME. That was probably I came across them.
In 1986 they moonlighted as Ciccone Youth. Track down the three track 12' - 'Into the Groove(y)' (a cover of Madonna's hit 'Into the Groove', incorporating snippets of her recording) and the short 'Tuff Titty Rap' on the A side (both performed by the Sonic Youth members), and 'Burnin' Up' on the B side.
This track is from the 1994 Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star album.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5695317409 - 'One of Northern Ireland's best-known pubs, it is a rare and classic example of a Victorian gin palace. Its one of my favourites, similar to the Phil' in Liverpool and one more reason to consider staying at the famous Europa hotel over the road.
It was opened as The Railway Tavern, as the Great Victoria St train station is just opposite. The pub was then bought by Michael Flanagan. His son Patrick renamed and renovated the pub in 1885.
The Crown owes its elaborate tiling, stained glass and woodwork to the Italian craftsmen whom Flanagan persuaded to work on the pub after hours. These craftsmen were brought to Ireland to work on the many new churches being built in Belfast at the time. It was this high standard of work that gave the Crown the reputation of being one of the finest Victorian Gin Palaces of its time.
In 1978 the National Trust, following persuasion by people including Sir John Betjeman, purchased the property and three years later completed a \u00a3400,000 renovation to restore the bar to its original Victorian state. Further restoration by the National Trust was done in 2007 at a cost of \u00a3500,000. As a NT member myself it would be nice to get a free pint on production of my NT membership card. I might take that up with them.
The pub was used as a location in David Caffrey's Divorcing Jack (1998), a film following Colin Bateman's character Dan Starkey through a web of political intrigue and Irish sectarian violence. I would fully recommend the book and many more of his books in the same style.
The exterior is decorated in polychromatic tiles. This includes a mosaic of a Crown on the floor of the entrance. The interior is also decorated with complex mosaics of tiles. The red granite topped bar is of an altar style, with a heated footrest underneath and is lit by gas lamps on the highly decorative carved ceilings.
The Crown has ten booths, or snugs. Built to accommodate the pub's more reserved customers during the austere Victorian period, the snugs feature the original gun metal plates for striking matches and an antique bell system for alerting staff. Extra privacy was then afforded by the pub's etched and stained glass windows which feature painted shells, fairies, pineapples, fleurs-de-lis and clowns.
This has been formed from 29 images and the original size is 17000x7000 pixels.

This is the first track from one of my favourite albums, the stunning debut 'Real Life', rightfully acclaimed as one of the greatest LP's of all time. The Guardian had this to say: 'Released in April 78, Magazine's debut was the first post-punk album. And Howard Devoto was the first post-punk anti-star, with his cryptic lyrics and anxious-young-man persona. Real Life had punk energy and art-rock ambition, with complex song structures and sophisticated musicianship.'
The band was formed by Howard Devoto after leaving Manchester punk band Buzzcocks in early 1977, deciding to create a more experimental and less punk band who later influenced many musicians. Magazine reunited for a tour through Britain in February 2009, with almost all the most remaining and 'classic' line-up during their brief time, with the exception of guitarist John McGeoch (who died in 2004 and was replaced by Noko, who had played with Devoto in Luxuria).
Early work followed punk stylings. The first single 'Shot By Both Sides', the chorus of which shared the same progression as Buzzcocks' 'Lipstick,' fractionally missed the UK Top 40. Its cover was an early example of the goth influence in punk. The band, with the recently recruited Dave Formula on keyboards, made its first major TV appearance on Top Of The Pops in February 1978, performing the single.
In 1979 Magazine's second album, 'Secondhand Daylight' was released, reaching the UK Top 40. The record features more experimental, synthesizer-based material. That same year, McGeoch, Adamson and Formula joined electronic project Visage, recording and releasing the single 'Tar'.
For the 'Correct Use of Soap', Devoto decided to change producer, choosing twisted genius Martin Hannett. The album made the Top 30. Following its release McGeoch decided to leave the band, tired of Magazine's low sales and their less guitar-oriented songs, joining Siouxsie and the Banshees.
To replace him the band called Robin Simon, who previously was in Ultravox.
After over 25 years a reunion was planned. The sold out shows received widespread critical acclaim, together with festivals in the UK and abroad over summer. In January 2010 Noko officially joined the band, becoming a full member of Magazine.

'Radio 4' are from Brooklyn and some of their influences, such as the Gang Of Four &
Primal Scream are easily heard in their music. They formed around 1999 and the name refers to BBC Radio 4, via the PIL track of the same name.
This track was released summer of 2001 and this was from their second album 'Gotham!', which is worth checking out. Their last album release was back in 2006.

Chiswick Park tube station is in west London. It was opened in 1879 and remodelled in 1931 when the Piccadilly line was extended west. The new station was designed by Charles Holden in a modern European style using brick, reinforced concrete and glass. Holden's design was inspired by Alfred Grenander's underground station Krumme Lanke in Berlin.
Inside the station a number of the original signs and features remain. A notice under each mentions 'This sign has been retained as part of the heritage of Chiswick Park station. Please note you must change at Hammersmith for the Piccadilly line. Mark Lane Station is now called Tower hill'.
This is a pasted joiner panorama from about 30 iphone shots.

Bauhaus were an English band from Northampton between 1978 and 1983. The group were Peter Murphy on vox, Daniel Ash on guitar, Kevin Haskins on drums and David J on bass. After break up some members continued as 'Love and Rockets'.
Originally called 'Bauhaus 1919' (a reference to the German Bauhaus art movement of the 1920s, because of its 'stylistic implications and associations'), the date was soon dropped. With the ultimate dark and gloomy sound and image, Bauhaus I think, are generally considered the first proper gothic rock group.
Together for only six weeks, Bauhaus entered the studio for the first time at Beck Studios in Wellingborough to record a seminal demo. Five songs were recorded, one of the tracks from the session, 'Bela Lugosi's Dead', running more than nine minutes, was released as the group's debut single in August 1979 on Small Wonder Records as Bauhaus. It stayed on the British independent charts for two years. The song received crucial airplay on BBC Radio 1 and DJ John Peel's evening show, and Bauhaus was subsequently asked to record a session for Peel's show, which was broadcast on January 3rd, 1980.
This single, 'The Passion of Lovers' peaked at number 56 and came from the second album, 'Mask' (1981). The band employed more keyboards and a variety of other instruments to add to the diversity of the record. In an unconventional move, the group shot a video for the album's title track as a promotional tool for the band as a whole and not any specific song from the record. My original 7' has a lyric sheet if the listener felt they would like to sing along(!).
In my opinion Bauhaus never received the critical regognicion they deserved. To appreciate the band, check out the excellent live cut 'Press the Eject and Give Me the Tape'. Alternatively, track down 'Swing the Heartache: The BBC Sessions'. Oh, and tell 'em I sent you!
------------------------
The story of St George and the Dragon was a legend brought back with the Crusaders and retold with the courtly appurtenances belonging to the genre of Romance. The earliest known depiction of the legend is from early 11th century Cappadocia, (in the iconography of the Eastern Orthodox Church, George had been depicted as a Roman soldier since at least the 7th century)
the earliest known surviving narrative text is an eleventh-century Georgian text.
A dragon or Crocodile creature makes its nest at the spring that provides water for the city of 'Silene' (perhaps modern Cyrene) in Libya or the city of Lydda, depending on the source. Consequently, the citizens have to dislodge the dragon from its nest for a time, to collect water. To do so, each day they offer the dragon at first a sheep, and if no sheep can be found, then a beautiful maiden must go instead of the sheep.
The victim is chosen by drawing lots. One day, this happens to be the princess. The monarch begs for her life to be spared, but to no avail. She is offered to the dragon, but there appears Saint George on his travels. He faces the dragon, protects himself with the sign of the cross, slays the dragon, and rescues the princess. The grateful citizens abandon their ancestral paganism and convert to Christianity.
The St George's Cross is a white flag with a red cross, he is Englands patron saint and the feast day is on April 23rd. The Barmy Army are keen carriers of the flag, supporters of the England cricket team, who beyond many predictions have retained the Ashes this week. So its quite appropriate I have slipped a little bit of symbolism into this post. If you are one of my Antipodean cousins and have managed to read this far, 'Sorry! see you in a couple of years time...'.

I had the pleasure of photographing Dodgy at a festival in the late 1990's. What a sound bunch of lads.
The band's cracking debut album was produced by The Lightning Seeds' Ian Broudie. During the 1990s the band gained much popularity for their live performances. The band concerned themselves with social issues by supporting The Serious Road Trip, War Child, the Liverpool Dockers' Strike, Charter 88 and youth democracy campaigns. The band became the second UK act, after China Drum, to play in Sarajevo after the lifting of the siege, giving a concert at Kuk club in August 1996. They returned to Bosnia in 1997, to film a programme with Kate Thornton in Mostar.
The original line up of the band, Clark, Miller, and Priest, returned with a live album, So Far On 3 Wheels - Dodgy On The Radio, in October 2007. In the summer of 2007, the band announced a reunion tour, featuring the entire original line up. These plans were abandoned however, when Miller fell out of bed, chipping a bone in his arm in the process. The rescheduled tour took place in March 2008.
Dodgy are best known for their hits 'Staying Out For The Summer', 'If You're Thinking Of Me', and 'Good Enough'. Check these out if this has whetted your appetite. Oh and tell 'em I sent you.

Art Deco is an eclectic artistic and design style which had its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century. The style originated in the 1920s and continued to be employed until after World War II. The term 'art deco' first saw wide use after an exhibition in 1966, referring to the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts D\u00e9coratifs et Industriels Modernes that was the culmination of high-end style moderne in Paris.
Led by the best designers in the decorative arts such as fashion, and interior design, Art Deco affected all areas of design throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including architecture and industrial design, as well as the visual arts such as painting, the graphic arts and film. At the time, this style was seen as elegant, glamorous, functional and modern.
In London, the former Arsenal Stadium boasts the famous East Stand facade. It remains at the football club's old home at Highbury, London Borough of Islington, which was vacated in the summer of 2006. Opened in October 1936, the structure now has Grade II listed status and has been converted into flats. William Bennie, the man behind the project, famously used the Art Deco style in the final design which was seen as one of the most opulent and impressive stands in world football. The London Underground is also famous for many examples of Art Deco architecture.
This joiner from over 20 iphone images is taken in Le Metropolitain in central Halifax, West Yorks. Its a lively cafe bar and brasserie with Art Deco-style design, housed in an elegant Georgian Listed building. There is a courtyard for al fresco dining. My lunch unexpectedly came in a Yorkshire Pudding, which after I had got my head around it was really good. Thanks to Jim for introducing the place to me!
Eclectic and vibrant with leapard print seats, the decor at Le Metro features Thai bronzed figures, walls adorned with Art-Deco posters and tin ceilings from New York. With a bold orange and black colour scheme, the unique interior has a warm, lively ambience.

for the Azure Damselfly it is the other way around. The second segment of the thorax has a distinctive spot with a line below connecting to the third segment.
Another difference can be observed when inspecting the side of the thorax. The Common Blue Damselfly has only one small black stripe there, while all other blue damselflies have two.
During mating, the male clasps the female by her neck while she bends her body around to his reproductive organs ? this is called a mating wheel. The pair flies together over the water and eggs are laid within a suitable plant, just below the surface.
The eggs hatch and the larvae, called nymphs, live in the water and feed on small aquatic animals. Nymphs climb out of the water up a suitable stem to moult into damselflies.

They could be on a distant planet, or maybe just popped out of Sigourney Weaver's air conditioning duct (or maybe the Spar on Thelwall New Road). A modern jack-o'-lantern is a carved pumpkin, although originally large turnips were carved. It is associated chiefly with the holiday of Samhain and Halloween and was named after the phenomenon of strange light flickering over peat bogs, called ignis fatuus or jack-o'-lantern. In a jack-o'-lantern, the top is cut off, and the inside flesh then scooped out
an image, usually a monstrous face, is carved out, and the lid replaced. It is typically seen during Halloween.

Dave with his full face tattoo. A very tattood man !
As many people will know I generally attend the local tattoo convention at Manchester and Liverpool. Too many people do 'judge by the cover' however, which is very wrong. A tat can be a fashion statement or something more.
A tattoo is a marking made by inserting indelible ink into the dermis layer of the skin to change the pigment for decorative or other reasons. Tattoos on humans are a type of decorative body modification, while tattoos on animals are most commonly used for identification or branding. Indeed the habit of women having one just above the bottom is offen referred to as a 'tramp stamp'.
The word tatoo appears to be a loan word from Polynesian 'tatau'. People have also been forcibly tattooed. A well-known example is the identification system for inmates in Nazi concentration camps during the Holocaust. Tattoos have also been used for identification in other ways. For example, in the period of early contact between the M\u0101ori and Europeans, M\u0101ori chiefs sometimes drew their moko (facial tattoo) on documents in place of a signature.
Permanent makeup is the use of tattoos to enhance eyebrows, lips (liner and/or lipstick), eyes (liner), and even moles, usually with natural colors, as the designs are intended to resemble makeup.
In Japan, tattoos are strongly associated with organized crime organizations known as the yakuza, particularly full body tattoos done the traditional Japanese way (Tebori).
In the United States many prisoners and criminal gangs use distinctive tattoos to indicate facts about their criminal behavior, prison sentences, and organizational affiliation. A tear tattoo, for example, can be symbolic of murder, with each tear representing the death of a friend. At the same time, members of the U.S. military have an equally well established and longstanding history of tattooing to indicate military units, battles, kills, etc., an association which remains widespread among older Americans. Tattooing is also common in the British Armed Forces.
