Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine buskers have been robbed of their spots, so their music has had to go underground.
But it's not just their music that has been taken, it is also their livelihoods. So this Eurovision, Ketchum UK has created a campaign for buskers from Liverpool to give up their usual spots along the Merseyrail network to Ukrainian musicians, giving them the chance to perform for audiences and keep the conversation alive about this unjust war.
Travellers going through the four biggest stations
Liverpool Central, Lime Street, Moorfields and James Street will be able to enjoy authentic Ukrainian busking music.
Each busking spot has a speaker streaming the artists music and a QR code for passers-by to scan to find out more about the musicians' story, videos about them and to donate to the cause.
All proceeds raised will go directly to Supplies for Ukraine C.I.C., who are working to provide essential, lifesaving equipment to civilians and volunteers on the front lines in Ukraine.
There is an accompanying outdoor poster campaign across the Merseyrail network and all tracks are streamed as a playlist on Spotify.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJHP48 - Chinatown is an area of Liverpool that is an ethnic enclave home to the oldest Chinese community in Europe. Located in the south of the city centre, Chinatown has many Chinese businesses, such as Chinese restaurants and supermarkets, and facilities for the Chinese community. The area is also notable for its Chinese-style architecture
with the paifang on Nelson Street being the largest, multiple-span arch of its kind outside China
The first presence of Chinese people in Liverpool dates back to 1834 when the first vessel direct from China arrived in Liverpool's docks to trade such goods as silk and cotton wool. Many Chinese immigrants first arrived in Liverpool in the late 1860s as a result of Alfred Holt and Company employing large numbers of Chinese seamen while establishing the Blue Funnel Shipping Line. The commercial shipping line created strong trade links between the cities of Shanghai, Hong Kong and Liverpool
mainly importing silk, cotton and tea. From the 1890s onwards, small numbers of Chinese began to set up businesses catering to the Chinese sailors working on Holt's lines and others. Some of these men married working class British women, resulting in a number of British-born Eurasian Chinese being born in Liverpool.
The Chinese Arch was assembled in 2000 (after being built in one of Liverpool's twin cities ? Shanghai) as a mark of redevelopment of the area, which is still continuing today.
Plans to redevelop a significant portion of Chinatown were revealed in October 2010 and April 2012 respectively. One scheme named 'China Square' is to include a Chinese Cultural Museum and Courtyard by Marriott in the former Scandinavian Hotel building. Another regeneration project tipped to take place is 'Shanghai Square', which when built will occupy the southern fringes of Chinatown. The proposal includes building a 23,000 m2 (250,000 sq ft) trade centre that will provide space for up to 100 businesses, specialist accommodation for Chinese students

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJW6ND - Ye Cracke is a pub in Rice Street off Hope Street in Liverpool, England. The name is in Old English: the Y is a thorn and the e on the end of Cracke is silent, thus the name is correctly pronounced The Crack. Despite the name, Ye Cracke is a 19th-century pub. The War Office is a small room in the pub, which is the oldest part of the pub.
It has historical connections with The Beatles because it was frequented by John Lennon and his girlfriend Cynthia when they were at art school, as well as the Dissenters, to whom a plaque hangs in the bar.
Thomas Cecil Gray and John Halton conceived the techniques described in their 1946 book A Milestone in Anaesthesia while in the pub.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJW6R3 - Quite simply this is the most spectacular pub in England - indeed, throughout the whole of the UK and it is only matched by the Crown in Belfast. Situated halfway between Liverpool's Anglican cathedral and Metropolitan catholic cathedral, this is a ?cathedral' among pubs. It was rebuilt in 1898-1900 to designs by Walter Thomas for Liverpool brewer, Robert Cain. Thomas and Cains went on to build the other prodigy pub of central Liverpool, the Vines. Craftsmen and artists from the then University Department of Architecture & Applied Art worked on it under the superintendence of G. Hall Neale and Arthur Stratton.
The exterior is a freely-treated Tudor style designed to resemble a Scottish castle with all sorts of odd details including stepped gables
turrets
balustraded parapet, oriel windows and a stone sculpture of musicians and musical instruments in low relief and a marble fa??ade. One of the most stunning features are the entrance gates to Hope Street
they are an amazing display of Art Nouveau wrought iron and copper gates by H. Bloomfield Bare which carry the motto and arms of the original Robert Cain brewery. The interior, which is what everyone comes to experience, has an unusual, complex plan.
Tour of the pub
Beyond the grand gates is a large northern drinking lobby, for stand-up drinking, with a mosaic floor in front of a bar counter also encrusted with mosaic and a wooden top. There are a number of heavily carved and polished mahogany partitions, Corinthian pilasters and columns, and a wonderful intricate plasterwork high ceiling with decorative cornice. To the left is the former off sales that was accessed by a door on the left of the lobby and it has a mosaic floor and tiled walls of cream and green topped with brown strips. There is another mosaic bar front, the original bar back has stained and leaded and decorative stained glass panels, and partitions have deep etched and frosted panels.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJW6WP - Tom Murphy (born 1949) is an English artist who is best known for his bronze sculptures.
Murphy is a self-taught artist, starting his artistic career initially as a hobby and moved quickly to an intense period of self-study, mastering a range of techniques in many art disciplines
Sir John Moores CBE (25 January 1896 ? 25 September 1993) was an English businessman, telegraphist, football club owner, politician and philanthropist, most famous for the founding of the now defunct Littlewoods retail and football pools company. Liverpool John Moores University is named in his honour.
Moores' football-betting empire and Littlewoods stores made him one of Britain's richest men. In 1992, Liverpool Polytechnic took the name Liverpool John Moores University in his honour upon being granted university status. A statue was later built which stands in the courtyard of the university's Avril Robarts Library.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M95NGR - Radio City Tower (also known as St. John's Beacon) is a radio and observation tower in Liverpool, England, built in 1969 and opened by Queen Elizabeth II. It was designed by James A. Roberts Associates in Birmingham. It is 138 metres tall, and is the second tallest free-standing building in Liverpool and the 32nd tallest in the United Kingdom.[2]
When considering the height of the building, it has a 10m long antenna on the roof, making it the tallest structure in Liverpool (including antennas).
As testament to the importance of its design, which was described by Historic England as embodying the technological bravura and spirit of the space age, the building was listed at Grade II in November 2020.
The tower takes its name from the main radio station that operates from it, Radio City and its sister station Greatest Hits Radio Liverpool & The North West.
At the top of the tower was a luxury 5 star revolving restaurant, the facade and floor of the restaurant revolving as one unit, while the roof of the restaurant was used as an observation platform for visitors. There are 558 stairs up to the top, and two lift shafts with lifts reaching the top in 30 seconds.
The tower is structurally independent of the adjacent shopping centre, with a simple foundation onto sandstone. Originally it was built as a chimney of the heating system of the shopping centre [1].The foundation is 60 feet in diameter, 17 feet deep and begins 40 feet below Houghton Street. It has a tapering shaft that was built using slip-formed concrete. The crows nest structure at the top was then added after the shaft was formed.
The original restaurant closed in 1979 for health and safety issues. It was re-opened, with a reduced capacity and additional fire prevention measures, during the early 1980s. The restaurant was eventually re-fitted as a Buck Rogers space-themed restaurant in 1983, but closed again due to lack of business. After this the observation deck and the restaurant remained closed.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NYNDY9 - Ronald Wycherley (17 April 1940 ? 28 January 1983), better known as Billy Fury, was an English musician and actor. An early star of rock and roll, he equalled the Beatles' record of 24 hits in the 1960s and spent 332 weeks on the UK chart. His hit singles include Wondrous Place, Halfway to Paradise and Jealousy. Fury also maintained a film career, notably playing rock performers in Play It Cool in 1962 and That'll Be the Day in 1973.
AllMusic journalist Bruce Eder stated that Fury's mix of rough-hewn good looks and unassuming masculinity, coupled with an underlying vulnerability, all presented with a good voice and some serious musical talent, helped turn [him] into a major rock and roll star in short order. Others have suggested that his rapid rise to prominence was due to his Elvis-influenced hip swivelling and, at times, highly suggestive stage act
Fury concentrated less on rock and roll and more on mainstream ballads, such as Halfway to Paradise and Jealousy (which reached No. 3 and No. 2 respectively in the UK Singles Chart in 1961). Fury confessed to the NME that I wanted people to think of me simply as a singer ? and not, more specifically, as a rock singer. I'm growing up, and I want to broaden my scope. I shall continue to sing rock songs, but at the same time my stage act is not going to be as wild in the future. It was Decca's decision to mould Fury into a teen idol after his last self-penned song, My Christmas Prayer, had failed to chart. The years 1961 through 1963 were Fury's best years chartwise. In 1962, he appeared in his first film, Play It Cool, modelled on the Elvis films. It featured Helen Shapiro, Danny Williams, Shane Fenton and Bobby Vee, who appeared with the Vernons Girls. The hit single from the film was Once Upon a Dream. There were other notable performances by several British actors and performers such as Richard Wattis, Lionel Blair and Dennis Price.
Fury's We Want Billy! (1963) was one of the first live albums

It is the main shopping area of Liverpool and takes its name from St Peter's Church, which was demolished in 1922. The side streets to the north of Church Street lead to Williamson Square, while the Grade I listed Bluecoat Chambers?the oldest surviving building in Liverpool?is to the south along Church Alley. The Liverpool Athenaeum, an institution founded in the 18th century, is also on Church Alley. The area behind the shops on the south side of Church Street is now part of the Liverpool One shopping complex, which opened in October 2008 after the redevelopment of a large part of the L1 postcode area (hence the name).

Championed by her friends the Beatles, Black began her career as a singer in 1963. Her singles Anyone Who Had a Heart and You're My World both reached number one in the UK in 1964. She had 11 top 10 hits on the UK Singles Chart between then and 1971, and an additional eight hits that made the top 40. In May 2010, new research published by BBC Radio 2 showed that her version of Anyone Who Had a Heart was the UK's biggest-selling single by a female artist in the 1960s. You're My World was also a modest hit in the U.S., peaking at No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Along with a successful recording career in the 1960s and early 1970s, Black hosted her own BBC variety show, Cilla (1968?1976). After a brief time as a comedy actress, she became a prominent television presenter in the 1980s and 1990s, hosting hit entertainment shows such as Blind Date (1985?2003), Surprise Surprise (1984?2001) and The Moment of Truth (1998?2001). In 2013, Black celebrated 50 years in show business. ITV honoured this milestone with a one-off entertainment special which aired on 16 October 2013, The One & Only Cilla Black, featuring Black herself and hosted by Paul O'Grady.
Black died on 1 August 2015 at the age of 72, after a fall in her villa in Estepona. The day after her funeral, the compilation album The Very Best of Cilla Black went to number one on the UK Albums Chart and the New Zealand Albums Chart
it was her first number one album. In 2017, a statue of Black commissioned by her sons was unveiled outside the Cavern Club's original entrance.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K0GF9E - Penny Lane is a road in the south Liverpool suburb of Mossley Hill. The name also applies to the area surrounding its junction with Smithdown Road and Allerton Road, and to the roundabout at Smithdown Place that was the location for a major bus terminus, originally an important tram junction of Liverpool Corporation Tramways. The roundabout was a frequent stopping place for John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison during their years as schoolchildren and students. Bus journeys via Penny Lane and the area itself subsequently became familiar elements in the early years of the Lennon?McCartney songwriting partnership. In 2009, McCartney reflected:
Penny Lane was kind of nostalgic, but it was really [about] a place that John and I knew ... I'd get a bus to his house and I'd have to change at Penny Lane, or the same with him to me, so we often hung out at that terminus, like a roundabout. It was a place that we both knew, and so we both knew the things that turned up in the story.
Lennon's original lyrics for In My Life had included a reference to Penny Lane. Soon after the Beatles recorded In My Life in October 1965, McCartney mentioned to an interviewer that he wanted to write a song about Penny Lane. A year later, he was spurred to write the song once presented with Lennon's Strawberry Fields Forever. McCartney also cited Dylan Thomas's nostalgic poem Fern Hill as an inspiration for Penny Lane. Lennon co-wrote the lyrics with McCartney. He recalled in a 1970 interview: The bank was there, and that was where the trams sheds were and people waiting and the inspector stood there, the fire engines were down there. It was reliving childhood

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K0KX5J - Penny Lane is a song by the English rock band the Beatles that was released in February 1967 as a double A-side single with Strawberry Fields Forever. It was written primarily by Paul McCartney and credited to the Lennon?McCartney songwriting partnership. The lyrics refer to Penny Lane, a street in Liverpool, and make mention of the sights and characters that McCartney recalled from his upbringing in the city.
The Beatles began recording Penny Lane in December 1966, intending it as a song for their album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Instead, after it was issued as a single to satisfy record company demand for a new release, the band adhered to their policy of omitting previously released singles from their albums. The song features numerous modulations that occur mid-verse and between its choruses. Session musician David Mason played a piccolo trumpet solo for its bridge section

A bronze, larger than life-size statue of The Beatles bathed in a blue hue after sunset. The Three Graces can be seen in the background.
About
An iconic statue of the Fab Four, in their hometown. The Beatles Statue arrived on Liverpool's Waterfront in December 2015. Donated by the famous Cavern Club, the placement of the statue coincides with the 50 year anniversary of the band's last gig played in Liverpool, at the Liverpool Empire Theatre. It's the city's most popular selfie spot!
The figures are larger than life size and weigh 1.2 tonnes in total. They were sculpted by Andrew Edwards who also created the All Together Now Christmas Truce WWI statue.
Take a walk through Liverpool ONE, and you might see where the inspiration for the statue came from.
Look out for the attention to detail, such as an 'L8' on the bottom of Ringo's shoe and the acorns in John's hand, cast from the ones that were picked up outside the Dakota building in New York

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DC9382 - Sir Kenneth Arthur Dodd OBE (8 November 1927 ? 11 March 2018) was an English comedian, singer and occasional actor. He was described as the last great music hall entertainer, and was primarily known for his live stand-up performances.
A lifelong resident of Knotty Ash in Liverpool, Dodd's career as an entertainer started in the mid-1950s. His performances included rapid and incessant delivery of often surreal jokes, and would run for several hours, frequently past midnight. His verbal and physical comedy was supplemented by his red, white and blue tickling stick prop, and often introduced by his characteristic upbeat greeting of How tickled I am! He interspersed the comedy with songs, both serious and humorous, and with his original speciality, ventriloquism. He also had several hit singles primarily as a ballad singer in the 1960s, and occasionally appeared in dramatic roles. He performed on radio and television, and popularised the characters of the Diddy Men.
Dodd was described as the last great music hall entertainer.[14] His stand-up comedy style was fast and relied on the rapid delivery of one-liner jokes. He said that his comic influences included other Liverpool comedians like Arthur Askey, Robb Wilton, Tommy Handley and the cheeky chappy from Brighton, Max Miller
Dodd had many hit records, charting on 18 occasions in the UK Top 40, including his first single Love Is Like a Violin (1960), produced on Decca Records by Alex Wharton, which charted at number 8 (UK). His version of Bill Anderson's song Happiness charted in 1964 and became Dodd's signature song

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M475JB - Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, officially known as the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King[2] and locally nicknamed Paddy's Wigwam, is the seat of the Archbishop of Liverpool and the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Liverpool in Liverpool, England. The Grade II* Metropolitan Cathedral is one of Liverpool's many listed buildings.
The cathedral's architect, Frederick Gibberd, was the winner of a worldwide design competition. Construction began in 1962 and was completed in 1967. Earlier designs for a cathedral were proposed in 1933 and 1953, but none were completed.
The competition to design the cathedral was held in 1959. The requirement was first, for a congregation of 3,000 (which was later reduced to 2,000) to be able to see the altar, in order that they could be more involved in the celebration of the Mass, and second, for the Lutyens crypt to be incorporated in the structure. Gibberd achieved these requirements by designing a circular building with the altar at its centre, and by transforming the roof of the crypt into an elevated platform, with the cathedral standing at one end. The construction contract was let to Taylor Woodrow
The cathedral is built in concrete with a Portland stone cladding and an aluminium covering to the roof. Its plan is circular, having a diameter of 195 feet (59 m), with 13 chapels around its perimeter. The shape of the cathedral is conical, and it is surmounted by a tower in the shape of a truncated cone. The building is supported by 16 boomerang-shaped concrete trusses which are held together by two ring beams, one at the bends of the trusses and the other at their tops. Flying buttresses are attached to the trusses, giving the cathedral its tent-like appearance. Rising from the upper ring beam is a lantern tower, containing windows of stained glass, and at its peak is a crown of pinnacles.
The entrance is at the top of a wide flight of steps leading up from Hope Street.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M475NP - John Winston Ono Lennon (born John Winston Lennon
9 October 1940 ? 8 December 1980) was an English singer, songwriter, musician and peace activist who achieved worldwide fame as founder, co-songwriter, co-lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the Beatles. Lennon's work was characterised by the rebellious nature and acerbic wit of his music, writing and drawings, on film, and in interviews. His songwriting partnership with Paul McCartney remains the most successful in history.
Born in Liverpool, Lennon became involved in the skiffle craze as a teenager. In 1956, he formed The Quarrymen, which evolved into the Beatles in 1960. Sometimes called the smart Beatle, he was initially the group's de facto leader, a role gradually ceded to McCartney. Lennon soon expanded his work into other media by participating in numerous films, including How I Won the War, and authoring In His Own Write and A Spaniard in the Works, both collections of nonsense writings and line drawings. Starting with All You Need Is Love, his songs were adopted as anthems by the anti-war movement and the larger counterculture of the 1960s. In 1969, he started the Plastic Ono Band with his second wife, the multimedia artist Yoko Ono, held the two-week-long anti-war demonstration Bed-ins for Peace, and left the Beatles to embark on a solo career.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AF8346 - Liverpool Central Station to get Liver Bird sculpture
Liverpool is to get a new sculpture of its iconic symbol, the Liver Bird.
The 6ft (1.8m) statue will stand at the entrance to Liverpool Central Station from early 2015.
Sculptor Rick Myers said it would celebrate the new Liverpool and the massive number of firsts that have been achieved here.
Councillor Nick Small said the bird would be a fantastic way of celebrating the city's proud history... seen by up to 50,000 people a day.
The statue will be dedicated to former Commercial District Partnership chief executive Paul Rice, who died in 2012.
The current chief executive Bill Addy said it was fantastic to see that Paul, who did so much to improve and promote Liverpool, is to be remembered at a high profile city centre location in such a striking fashion.
The fact that it's the emblem of the city and his beloved football club - his two great passions - is a fitting tribute.
Liver Birds Inc director Arthur Johnson said he expected the sculpture to be a popular photo spot for tourists, football fans and shoppers.
A seal from 1352 depicts the symbol of Liverpool as a bird holding something in its beak
Over the years, it became the Liver Bird, an eagle mixed with elements of a shoveler, spoonbill and cormorant
The largest, best known Liver Birds stand at 18ft (5.5m) on top of the Royal Liver Building on Liverpool's waterfront
The bird also features on the city's logo, the badge of Liverpool FC and the crests of both the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P72D9N - The Lady Lever Art Gallery is a museum founded and built by the industrialist and philanthropist William Lever, 1st Viscount Leverhulme and opened in 1922. The Lady Lever Art Gallery is set in the garden village of Port Sunlight, on the Wirral and one of the National Museums Liverpool.
The museum is a significant surviving example of late Victorian and Edwardian taste. It houses major collections of fine and decorative art that are an expression of Lord Leverhulme's personal taste and collecting interests. The collection is strong in British 19th-century painting and sculpture, spilling over to include late 18th-century and early 20th works. There are important collections of English furniture, Wedgwood, especially jasperware, and Chinese ceramics, and smaller groups of other types of objects, such as Ancient Greek vases and Roman sculpture. The majority of objects were part of the original donation, but the collection has continued to expand at a modest rate. The museum displays mostly mixed paintings, sculpture and furniture together, and there are five Period Rooms recreating typical period interiors from large houses.
The Building was commissioned in 1913 from architects William and Segar Owen, the Lady Lever Art Gallery was built in the Beaux-Arts style. The building was opened in 1922 by Princess Beatrice, the youngest daughter of Queen Victoria.
In 2015 part of the museum was closed for building works, with little of the ceramics collections on display, but most of the other collections. A touring exhibition visited museums in Japan and elsewhere. The redeveloped South End galleries were restored to their original architecture style as part of a ?2.8 million restoration project in 2016. The work included opening up original doorways to increase the circulation of visitors, improving the lighting and restoring some of the original vaulted ceilings

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GJBPNT - Liverpool Lime Street is a terminus railway station, and the main station serving the city centre of Liverpool. Opened in August 1836, it is the oldest grand terminus mainline station still in use in the world.[citation needed] A branch of the West Coast Main Line from London Euston terminates at the station, as well as TransPennine Express trains and other train services.
Having realised that their existing Crown Street Station was too far away from the city centre, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway (L&MR) commenced construction of the more central Lime Street Station during October 1833. Designed by John Cunningham, Arthur Holme, and John Foster Jr, it was officially opened during August 1836. Proving to be very popular with the railway-going public, within six years of its opening, expansion of the station had become necessary. The first expansion, which was collaboratively designed by Richard Turner and William Fairburn, was completed during 1849 at a total cost of ?15,000 (equivalent to ?1,430,000 in 2016). During 1867, work upon a further expansion of Lime Street Station commenced, during which time the present northern arched train shed was built. Designed by William Baker and Francis Stevenson, upon completion, the train shed was the largest such structure in the world, featuring a span of 200 feet (61 m), as well as the first to make extensive use of iron. During 1879, a second parallel southern train shed was completed.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXKRH - The Albert Dock is a complex of dock buildings and warehouses in Liverpool, England. Designed by Jesse Hartley and Philip Hardwick, it was opened in 1846, and was the first structure in Britain to be built from cast iron, brick and stone, with no structural wood. As a result, it was the first non-combustible warehouse system in the world.
At the time of its construction the Albert Dock was considered a revolutionary docking system because ships were loaded and unloaded directly from/to the warehouses. Two years after it opened it was modified to feature the world's first hydraulic cranes. Due to its open yet secure design, the Albert Dock became a popular store for valuable cargoes such as brandy, cotton, tea, silk, tobacco, ivory and sugar. However, despite the Albert Dock's advanced design, the rapid development of shipping technology meant that within 50 years, larger, more open docks were required, although it remained a valuable store for cargo.
During the Second World War, the Albert Dock was requisitioned by the Admiralty serving as a base for boats of the British Atlantic Fleet. The complex was damaged during air raids on Liverpool, notably during the May Blitz of 1941. In the aftermath of the war, the financial problems of the owners and the general decline of docking in the city meant that the future of the Albert Dock was uncertain. Numerous plans were developed for the re-use of the buildings but none came to fruition and in 1972 the dock was finally closed. Having lain derelict for nearly ten years, the redevelopment of the dock began in 1981, when the Merseyside Development Corporation was set up, with the Albert Dock being officially re-opened in 1984.
Today the Albert Dock is a major tourist attraction in the city and the most visited multi-use attraction in the United Kingdom, outside of London. It is a vital component of Liverpool's UNESCO designated World Heritage Maritime Mercantile City and the docking complex and warehouses also com

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BG7KGC - The Nelson Monument is a monument to Admiral Horatio Nelson, in Exchange Flags, Liverpool, England. It was designed by Matthew Cotes Wyatt and sculpted by Richard Westmacott. It stands to the north of the Town Hall and was unveiled in 1813.
In 1805, Liverpool City Council resolved to commemorate Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar by erecting a monument and voted to pay ?1,000 towards its design and construction. A public subscription fund was launched and within two months a total of ?8,930 (equivalent to ?730,000 in 2019)
Exchange Flags is a Grade II listed building in Liverpool, England. It is laid out in a 'U' shape, with Walker House situated on the west side and Horton House on the east side. Walker House (formerly known as Derby House) was adapted during its construction to include a reinforced bunker that housed the Western Approaches Command Headquarters, the command centre for the campaign waged against the German submarine fleet during WW2. The courtyard faces Liverpool Town Hall and contains the Nelson Monument.
The monument consists of a bronze statue on a stone base. Its overall height is 29 feet (8.8 m), and the circumference of the base is 95 feet 4 inches (29.1 m). The base consists of a drum-shaped pedestal in Westmorland marble 8 feet 10 inches (2.7 m) high, standing on a granite basement 6 feet (1.8 m) high.[b] Seated around the pedestal are four statues depicting manacled prisoners sitting in poses of sadness
they represent Nelson's major victories, the battles of Cape St Vincent, the Nile, Copenhagen, and Trafalgar. Set into the drum between the statues are four bronze bas-reliefs depicting other naval actions in which Nelson was involved. Encircling the pedestal above the statues are swags of laurel hanging from behind lions' heads. Attached to rings in the lions' mouths are chains that descend to manacle the prisoners. At the top of the pedestal is a cornice with an inscription in metal letters reading ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN
