Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T20EA1 - The Craven Arms is situated on the corner of Blucher Street and Gough Street and retains much of its former splendour. The Craven Arms has maintained its tiled mouldings, blue faience facade and the glazed wall mouldings which remain as rare advertisements for Holder's Ales. Holder's Brewery was based in Aston and was purchased by M&B in 1919. The signage above the Craven Arms on the more recent photograph state that the pub was established in 1838.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJCCAR - Ye Cracke is a pub in Rice Street, just off Hope Street, in Liverpool, Merseyside, England. The name is in Old English: the Y is a thorn and the e on the end of Cracke is silent, thus the name is correctly pronounced The Crack. Despite the name, Ye Cracke is a 19th-century pub. The War Office is a small room in the pub, which is the oldest part of the pub.
It has historical connections with The Beatles because it was frequented by John Lennon and his girlfriend Cynthia when they were at art school, as well as the Dissenters, to whom a plaque hangs in the bar.
Thomas Cecil Gray and John Halton conceived the techniques described in their 1946 book A Milestone in Anaesthesia while in the pub.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNGJ - This image shows an etched glass trade mark (TM) panel featuring the emblem of Greenall Whitley, photographed at The Causeway Hotel, a former public house on Wilderspool Causeway in Warrington, Cheshire (postcode WA4 1AD). The etched design depicts the brewery's historic emblem within a shield, accompanied by ribbon banners reading Trade Mark.
Greenall Whitley was one of the North West of England's most significant brewing companies, with roots dating back to the 18th century. Its pubs commonly incorporated branded architectural features such as etched windows, glass panels, and exterior signage to assert brewery ownership and reinforce brand identity within tied houses.
Decorative etched glass of this type is characteristic of late Victorian and early 20th-century pub design, combining functional glazing with advertising and heraldic imagery. Surviving examples are increasingly valued as elements of pub heritage, particularly as many historic public houses have closed, been altered, or redeveloped.
Photographed close-up with reflections visible in the glass, the image is well suited to editorial use covering British brewing history, pub heritage, historic branding, architectural details, and the cultural legacy of the tied-house system in England

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M69C9X - Liquor (or a spirit) is an alcoholic drink produced by distillation of grains, fruits, vegetables, or sugar, that have already gone through alcoholic fermentation. Other terms for liquor include: spirit drink, distilled beverage, spirituous liquor or hard liquor. The distillation process concentrates the liquid to increase its alcohol by volume. As liquors contain significantly more alcohol (ethanol) than other alcoholic drinks, they are considered 'harder'
in North America, the term hard liquor is sometimes used to distinguish distilled alcoholic drinks from non-distilled ones, whereas the term spirits is more common in the UK. Some examples of liquors include vodka, rum, gin, and tequila. Liquors are often aged in barrels, such as for the production of brandy and whiskey, or are infused with flavorings to form a flavored liquor such as absinthe.
While the word liquor ordinarily refers to distilled alcoholic spirits rather than beverages produced by fermentation alone, it can sometimes be used more broadly to refer to any alcoholic beverage (or even non-alcoholic products of distillation or various other liquids).
Like other alcoholic drinks, liquor is typically consumed for the psychoactive effects of alcohol. Liquor may be consumed on its own ('neat'), typically in amounts of around 50 millilitres (1.7 US fluid ounces) per served drink. In an undiluted form, distilled beverages are often slightly sweet, and bitter, and typically impart a burning mouthfeel, with an odor derived from the alcohol and the production and aging processes
the exact flavor varies between different varieties of liquor and the different impurities they impart. Liquor is also frequently mixed with other ingredients to form a cocktail.
Rapid consumption of a large amount of liquor can cause severe alcohol intoxication or alcohol poisoning, which can be fatal. Consistent consumption of liquor over time correlates with higher mortality and other harmful health effects

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59WYK - This image shows a close-up detail of a stained glass pub window bearing the words Smoke Room, formed in leaded lettering against amber-coloured glass. Such signage was common in traditional English pubs, where drinking spaces were historically divided into areas such as public bars, saloons, tap rooms, and smoke rooms.
The smoke room was typically a more comfortable or enclosed area where patrons could smoke pipes or cigarettes, reflecting social customs of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although smoking is now prohibited in enclosed public spaces in the UK, the architectural features associated with these rooms remain an important part of pub heritage.
Decorative stained and leaded glass windows are characteristic of historic British pub interiors, combining function, privacy, and visual identity. In cities like York, many pubs retain these features as part of their listed or conservation-area status.
Photographed to emphasise texture, lettering, and glasswork, the image is well suited for editorial use covering British pub culture, social history, heritage architecture, interior design, and traditional signage.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59X1F - This image shows a stained glass window marked Tap Room at a traditional public house in York. The lettering is formed within leaded and etched glass, a style commonly associated with historic English pubs and long-established drinking houses.
The term tap room traditionally referred to a more informal area of a pub where beer was served directly from the cask, often at lower prices and frequented by local regulars. Such spaces played an important role in British social life, particularly in historic cities like York.
Architectural details like stained glass pub windows combine functional signage with decorative craftsmanship, contributing to the distinctive character of British pub interiors and exteriors. These features are increasingly valued as part of the UK's cultural and architectural heritage.
Photographed close-up to emphasise typography, glasswork, and framing, the image is well suited for editorial use covering British pub culture, heritage architecture, hospitality history, and traditional signage in historic cities.

Victoria Bridge was built in 1837, the year Queen Victoria ascended the throne, hence the name. This new bridge replaced an old and narrow hump-backed pack-saddle one. Indeed, the original line of the road that led over the bridge, down Smithy Fold, and along Ellison Street is traceable, and is preserved particularly in the buildings of the Brook Tavern, Cafeteria, Glossop Pizza, Balti Palace (all built in 1832).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JN1FWY - Albion, translated to present-day terms, means ?white' and is often associated with all things English. The present day ambience of the Albion's interior reflects this translation and has firm connections with the Great War going far beyond the modern ?concept' pub of today.
Mike Mercer has run the Albion Inn for over 37 years and has created and captured the essence of the Great War 1914-18 in this last remaining classic Victorian corner street pub within the City Walls of Chester.
Albion Street, and the adjoining Volunteer Street both lead to the former Drill Hall, which was a recruiting centre during the First World War.
Many a young lad would have spent his King's Shilling in the bar of the Albion before going to face the horrors of the Western Front.
The Albion Inn dates from the late 1880's and Mike and Christina have managed to retain the traditional three room layout covering Vault, Snug and Lounge, containing Great War artefacts and pictures, which give a distinct period feel, together with posters and enamelled advertising signs.
At the same time, The Albion provides high standards of food, drink and accommodation, worthy of its entry in many National and International Guides and Publications.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CBTEEP - William Shankly OBE (2 September 1913 ? 29 September 1981) was a Scottish football player and manager, who is best known for his time as manager of Liverpool. Shankly brought success to Liverpool, gaining promotion to the First Division and winning three League Championships and the UEFA Cup. He laid foundations on which his successors Bob Paisley and Joe Fagan were able to build by winning seven league titles and four European Cups in the ten seasons after Shankly retired in 1974. A charismatic, iconic figure at the club, his oratory stirred the emotions of the fanbase. In 2019, 60 years after Shankly arrived at Liverpool, Tony Evans of The Independent wrote, Shankly created the idea of Liverpool, transforming the football club by emphasising the importance of the Kop and making supporters feel like participants
Shankly took charge of Liverpool when they were in the Second Division and rebuilt the team into a major force in English and European football. He led Liverpool to the Second Division Championship to gain promotion to the top-flight First Division in 1962, before going on to win three First Division Championships, two FA Cups, four Charity Shields and one UEFA Cup. It was during Shankly's reign the club changed to an all-red home strip, and You'll Never Walk Alone became the club's anthem. Shankly announced his surprise retirement from football a few weeks after Liverpool had won the 1974 FA Cup Final, having managed the club for 15 years, and was succeeded by his long-time assistant Bob Paisley. He led the Liverpool team out for the last time at Wembley for the 1974 FA Charity Shield.[6] He died seven years later, aged 68. Considered one of the greatest managers in the sport, Shankly was among the inaugural inductees into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002, and the Scottish Football Hall of Fame in 2004.

It was founded by James Proctor and George Robins in Dukinfield, Cheshire in 1858. The company was originally known by the unwieldy name of the Refuge Friend in Deed Life Assurance and Sick Fund Friendly Society.
From 1895 until 1987, its head office was the magnificent Grade II* listed, Refuge Assurance Building on Oxford Street in central Manchester, now used as the Principal Hotel. In 1987, the company decided to move out of the city centre to new, purpose-built, offices in the grounds of Fulshaw Hall in Wilmslow, around 12 miles south of the old Refuge Building. In October 1996, the Refuge Assurance Company merged with United Friendly to form the United Assurance Group (UAG).
After disappointing performances following the merger, the United Assurance Group was first approached by Britannic Assurance in November 1999, and then by Royal London Mutual Insurance Society in February 2000. Following successful talks, Royal London took over UAG for ?1.6 billion.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEJ5TG - A savings bank is a financial institution whose primary purpose is accepting savings deposits and paying interest on those deposits.
They originated in Europe during the 18th century with the aim of providing access to savings products to all levels in the population. Often associated with social good these early banks were often designed to encourage low income people to save money and have access to banking services. They were set up by governments or by socially committed groups or organisations such as with credit unions. The structure and legislation took many different forms in different countries over the 20th century.
The advent of internet banking at the end of the 20th century saw a new phase in savings banks with the online savings bank that paid higher levels of interest in return for clients only having access over the web.

The one you see today was constructed in 1821 and, thanks to surviving the Blitz completely intact, has become one of London's rare examples of original ornate Victoriana at its finest.
Uniquely, the pub is full of specially commissioned glasswork, with much of it thought to have been created by the renowned Walter Gibb and Sons of Blackfriars, using some of the most advanced engraving and etching techniques available at the time. While nobody is sure why there are so many mirrors, one theory is that they were deliberately commissioned by a local magistrate at the time in order to reduce the privacy of the pub's snugs, and therefore smiting the activity of local women of the night.
Whatever the reason, it has led to The Red Lion being described as 'a perfect example of the small Victorian gin palace at its best' by Architectural Review, and it really is a window into life in the late 19th century.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DJ7BA3 - The original business was renamed Peter Walker & Son. Andrew further expanded the business south, building new brewing facilities in both Warrington (Walkers of Warrington, founded in 1864), and Burton.
In 1879, on the death of his father, Andrew gained control of the business, and in 1890 converted the private company into the publicly listed Peter Walker & Son Warrington & Burton Ltd. The later Sir Andrew pioneered many of the innovations in brewing production, beer distribution and pub management that we take for granted today, including patenting the Burton Union System. The group had a chain of pubs in the Liverpool and the north west of England, many of which today still carry the slogan Walkers Warrington Ale in their frosted glass.
After his death in 1893, with his son William now chairman, the company merged with Cains Brewery in 1921, and then Tetley's Brewery of Leeds in 1960, to form Tetley Walker. This company was one of the founding partners of Allied Breweries.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HE18F0 - Opened by Felix O'Hanlon as The Railway Tavern, the pub was then bought by Michael Fanigan. Fanigan's son Patrick renamed and renovated the pub in 1885.
The Crown owes its elaborate tiling, stained glass and woodwork to the Italian craftsmen whom Fanigan persuaded to work on the pub after hours. These craftsmen were brought to Ireland to work on the many new churches being built in Belfast at the time. It was this high standard of work that gave the Crown the reputation of being one of the finest Victorian Gin Palaces of its time.
In 1978, the National Trust, following persuasion by people including Sir John Betjeman, purchased the property and three years later completed a ?400,000 renovation to restore the bar to its original Victorian state. Further restoration by the National Trust was done in 2007 at a cost of ?500,000. This work is the subject of a BBC Northern Ireland documentary, The Crown Jewel, screened in 2008.
A recognisable landmark of Belfast, the pub has featured as a location in numerous film and television productions, such as David Caffrey's Divorcing Jack (1998) and Carol Reed's classic 1947 film Odd Man Out.
The Crown has been given a Grade A Listed Building status by the Environment and Heritage Service.

A printed circuit board, or PCB, is used to mechanically support and electrically connect electronic components using conductive pathways, tracks or signal traces etched from copper sheets laminated onto a non-conductive substrate.
Excluding exotic products using special materials or processes, all printed circuit boards manufactured today can be built using the following four items which are usually purchased from manufacturers:
Laminates
Copper-clad laminates
Resin impregnated B-stage cloth (Pre-preg)
Copper foil
