Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E91E9P - Live music editorial photograph of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets performing at Albert Hall Manchester on 27 February 2026, showing guitarists on stage under dark concert lighting with drums, microphone stands, cables, pedals and spare electric guitars visible across the performance area. The Australian psychedelic rock band, originally formed in Perth, are strongly associated with colourful, high-energy psych rock, fuzz guitar, garage rock, progressive rock textures and fast, distorted live performances. The right-hand performer appears to be singing or playing lead guitar at the microphone, but the individual should only be named as Jack McEwan if confirmed by the photographer's own notes or venue accreditation, because person identity cannot be verified from this image alone.
The image is suitable for editorial coverage of contemporary Australian rock, UK touring, Manchester concerts, live music photography, independent venues, gig culture and psychedelic music. Albert Hall, a Grade II listed former Wesleyan chapel converted into a major Manchester music venue, gives the performance additional cultural context as part of the city's live music scene. The dark background, spotlight, red stage tones and visible instruments create a strong documentary atmosphere, useful for articles about touring bands, guitar music, alternative music, psych rock revival, music journalism, concert reviews, festival line-ups and the experience of live performance.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E6T4DM - Vintage Frank Sidebottom programme pages featuring Timperley Bigshorts FC branding, Umbro sponsorship styling and a signed dedication associated with cult comic character Frank Sidebottom, created by Chris Sievey. The image shows two printed pages with bold red and black vertical stripes, a Timperley Bigshorts FC badge and character illustration on one side, and a cut-out official match token number panel and voucher sheet instruction on the other. A handwritten message reading best regards Frank Sidebottom adds extra collectible and documentary interest, making the photograph useful for editorial stories about British alternative comedy, cult memorabilia, Chris Sievey, Manchester cultural history, novelty football culture and the crossover between music, comedy and graphic design. Frank Sidebottom became one of the most distinctive figures in late twentieth century British pop culture, closely associated with Greater Manchester, eccentric live performance, comic invention and DIY creativity. Timperley Bigshorts FC formed part of that extended humorous universe, blending spoof football imagery with fan culture, merchandise and printed ephemera in a way that now appeals strongly to collectors and cultural historians. The visible Umbro reference also places the design within the look and branding language of football kit culture and sponsorship aesthetics familiar from the late 1980s and 1990s. This image is commercially useful for picture buyers needing material on Frank Sidebottom collectibles, Chris Sievey archives, vintage printed memorabilia, signed entertainment ephemera, cult British humour, independent publishing and Manchester creative history. It also suits magazine features, newspaper retrospectives, books, documentaries, museum interpretation, fan archive projects and pieces exploring the afterlife of unusual pop culture objects. The graphic layout, readable text and autograph detail make it a strong stock image for themes of nostalgia & fandom

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8E1AC - Seasick Steve performing live at Albert Hall, Manchester, during his Saturday 16 November 2024 UK tour date, pictured seated on stage playing electric guitar beneath deep blue lighting. The image captures the instantly recognisable American blues and roots musician with his trademark long white beard, cap, sleeveless shirt and relaxed, unvarnished stage presence, creating the kind of intimate, authentic concert scene that editors, picture desks and music writers often look for when covering touring artists, live reviews and venue features. Amplifiers, microphone stands, cables, cases and a shadowy stage setup frame the performance, adding practical documentary detail and reinforcing the working atmosphere of a real gig rather than a polished promo shoot. Albert Hall Manchester, a restored former chapel and one of the city's best-loved live venues, provides a dramatic indoor setting for this rootsy performance, with the dark backdrop and blue wash of light helping the musician stand out against the stage. The photograph suits editorial use around blues, blues rock, Americana, roots music, singer songwriters, touring musicians, live entertainment, Manchester nightlife, northern England culture, UK music venues and documentary concert photography. It also works for broader themes such as veteran performers, enduring live appeal, stripped-back musicianship, characterful stage portraits, independent music culture and authentic gig-going experiences. The seated pose, visible guitar, amp stack and low-light venue mood all help tell the story of a performer whose reputation has long been built on raw sound, personality and road-tested credibility rather than polish, spectacle or gimmickry. Strong searchable themes include live blues guitarist, concert at Albert Hall Manchester, bearded musician on stage, intimate indoor gig, electric guitar performance, UK tour date and atmospheric music venue photography. Fairy lights above the stage add extra visual texture.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E5TBNE - Rakel Mjöll Leifsdóttir and Alice Go of Dream Wife perform live at Future Yard, Birkenhead, Merseyside, England, on 2 November 2024. The photograph captures lead vocalist Rakel Mjöll Leifsdóttir at the microphone with one arm raised, bathed in intense red, pink and violet stage lighting, while guitarist Alice Go appears to the left of frame during the same performance. The image conveys the charged atmosphere of a packed grassroots venue gig, with bright LED backlights, saturated colour, deep shadows and a close audience perspective creating a strong sense of immediacy and live energy. Dream Wife are known for a blend of indie rock, punk, post-punk attitude, art-pop style and outspoken feminist themes, and this editorial concert image reflects the theatrical confidence and direct stage presence for which the band are widely recognised on the UK alternative circuit. Future Yard has become one of the best-known independent music venues on the Wirral, combining touring shows with artist development and community cultural activity, making it an important setting for documentary coverage of contemporary live music outside London. The composition is useful for editorial stories about women in rock, live performance, touring musicians, independent venues, nightlife in Merseyside, regional music scenes, grassroots culture, concert photography and modern British alternative music. The vivid lighting, dramatic gesture and visible second band member also make the frame valuable for reviews, gig listings, features on Dream Wife, festival previews, music journalism, arts pages and broader reporting on the survival and importance of smaller UK venues. As a documentary music photograph, it also carries strong editorial appeal for coverage of UK tours, women-led bands, independent culture, live entertainment, stage fashion, audience connection and the visual identity of contemporary alternative performance.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E5TBNG - Rakel Mjöll Leifsdóttir, vocalist with Icelandic-British indie punk band Dream Wife, performs live on stage at Future Yard, Birkenhead, Merseyside, England, on 2 November 2024. The image captures a close-up portrait at the microphone under saturated pink and magenta concert lighting, with stage haze, bright backlights and a soft neon wash creating a vivid small-venue atmosphere. Dream Wife are widely associated with a high-energy mix of indie rock, punk, post-punk edge, art-pop styling and feminist lyrical themes, and this photograph conveys the immediacy and personality that have made the band a notable live act on the UK alternative circuit. The picture shows the singer framed tightly against the glow of the lighting rig, with expressive hand placement, direct focus and a strong sense of stage presence, making it well suited to editorial use around live performance, women in rock, touring bands, contemporary guitar music and independent music culture. Future Yard has become one of the best-known grassroots venues on the Wirral, combining live music, artist development and community cultural activity, and hosting established touring acts alongside emerging talent. As a documentary concert image, this frame also speaks to wider themes of grassroots venue survival, regional nightlife, audience intimacy, alternative fashion, pop-punk revival, DIY music scenes and the continuing importance of smaller independent spaces outside London for British and visiting artists. The colour, mood and tight composition give the image strong visual impact for coverage of gigs, festival previews, music journalism, entertainment pages, tour promotion, band features and Merseyside arts coverage.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RTJRXM - St Paul's Church is a Church of England parish church located in Bedford Street, Covent Garden, central London. It was designed by Inigo Jones as part of a commission for the 4th Earl of Bedford in 1631 to create houses and buildings fit for the habitations of Gentlemen and men of ability. As well as being the parish church of Covent Garden, the church has gained the nickname of the actors' church by a long association with the theatre community.
Completed in 1633, St Paul's was the first entirely new church to be built in London since the Reformation. Its design and the layout of the square have been attributed to Inigo Jones since the 17th century, although firm documentary evidence is lacking. According to an often repeated story, recorded by Horace Walpole, Lord Bedford asked Jones to design a simple church not much better than a barn, to which the architect replied Then you shall have the handsomest barn in England
The temple front with a portico on the square has never in fact been the main entrance, although this may have been Jones's first intention. The altar lies behind this wall, and the entrance is at the far end to this. The stone facing of this facade is also later
originally it was apparently brick with stucco. The other sides of the building remain brick, with details in stone. The triangular pediments at both ends are in wood.
St Paul's connection with the theatre began as early as 1663 with the establishment of the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, and was further assured in 1723 with the opening of Covent Garden Theatre, now the Royal Opera House.
On 9 May 1662, Samuel Pepys noted in his diary the first Italian puppet play under the porticothe first recorded performance of Punch and Judy, a fact commemorated by the annual MayFayre service in May.
The portico of St Paul's was the setting for the first scene of Shaw's Pygmalion, the play that was later adapted as My Fair Lady.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RH8AFD - Odeon Cinema Harrogate, North Yorkshire
East Parade, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG1 5LB
Designed by: Harry Weedon and W Calder Robson
Built: 1936
Standing on the corner of East Parade and Station Avenue in the North Yorkshire town of Harrogate is arguably one of Britain's finest Modernist cinema buildings. Today, the building survives as part of the Odeon cinema chain after eight decades of continuous use as a working cinema.
The Odeon company traces its history back to 1930 when the firm established by Oscar Deutsch (1893-1941) opened its first cinema bearing the Odeon name, at Perry Barr in Birmingham, on 4 August 1930. The company saw its greatest period of expansion during the 1930s, as the increasing popularity of cinema-going allowed Deutsch to open in excess of 250 cinemas prior to the Second World War.
Like the majority of Odeon's cinemas, the Odeon Harrogate was built in the Streamlined Moderne style and was a product of the Weedon Partnership. Harry Weedon (1887-1970) became involved with the Odeon chain in 1934 and his company produced designs for some of the finest buildings of the period.
The dominant feature of the Odeon Harrogate's design is a central brown-brick tower, with a projecting, taller 'fin' clad in biscuit-coloured faience tiles. At the top of the fin 'cinema' is spelt out in slender, sans-serif lettering. The tower is set in front of the main auditorium, of which the uppermost section is visible behind the tower. The top section is broken with projecting bands of darker brown brick, and the bands continue down the face of the tower on its southern face.
The northern range of the cinema (to the left when viewed face-on) comprises a five-bay, four-storey block clad in the same biscuit-coloured faience, save for the base of the building, which is clad in black faience. The faience tiles are rectangular and are set in pairs horizontally, with thin joints between the paired tiles, and thicker, more prominent horizontal joints

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFEPY8 - This image shows a purple neon sign displaying the words Escape Rooms Cardiff, photographed against a dark background that accentuates the vivid glow of the illuminated lettering. The sign uses bold, stylised typography and continuous neon-style tubing, creating a strong visual identity associated with modern leisure and entertainment venues.
The lighting suggests an indoor or low-light environment, likely within or near the entrance of an escape room attraction. The rich purple hue stands out sharply against the surrounding darkness, producing a high-contrast, contemporary look that reflects the immersive and playful nature of escape room experiences.
Escape rooms have become a popular form of urban entertainment across UK cities, offering interactive puzzle-solving activities for groups, tourists, and corporate team-building. The sign represents this growing leisure sector within Cardiff's city-centre entertainment economy.
The photograph captures the use of neon and LED lighting as a branding tool in modern hospitality and leisure spaces, combining visual impact with a sense of nighttime energy and experiential appeal.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3D2 - A close view of an illuminated exterior sign for Playhouse Gentlemen's Club in Cardiff city centre. The circular sign, clearly displaying the name Playhouse along with heraldic-style graphics, is mounted above street level and lit with warm bulbs, designed to attract attention within a busy urban streetscape.
The venue operates as part of Cardiff's night-time leisure economy, which includes bars, clubs, live music venues and adult entertainment establishments concentrated around the city centre. Signs such as this play a functional and symbolic role, marking spaces associated with nightlife, consumption and adult-oriented leisure within the public realm.
The surrounding architecture reflects Cardiff's historic commercial streets, with upper-floor residential or office accommodation above ground-level leisure uses. The contrast between traditional building façades and modern illuminated signage illustrates how historic city centres adapt to changing patterns of entertainment and economic activity.
Photographed under conditions where artificial lighting is prominent, the image is well suited for editorial use covering nightlife economies, urban culture, adult entertainment regulation, city-centre leisure districts, and debates around the role of such venues within modern British cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PR - This image shows winners of a charity auction posing with illustrated pub signs from The Petrol Head, a themed pop-up pub at Silverstone Woodlands camping during the 2023 Formula 1 British Grand Prix weekend.
The Petrol Head pub formed part of the temporary festival-style facilities provided for F1 fans staying at the Woodlands campsite near Silverstone Circuit.
As part of the event, a selection of bespoke, illustrated pub signs created specifically for the pop-up venue were auctioned to raise money for charity.
The auction took place during the race weekend, with all proceeds from the sale of the signs donated to charitable causes supported by the organisers.
Such charity auctions are a regular feature of large UK motorsport camping events, combining memorabilia, fan engagement, and fundraising in an informal social setting.
The two winning bidders are shown holding their purchased signs immediately after the auction, marking both the fundraising success and the temporary nature of the installation.
The event highlights how major sporting weekends such as the British Grand Prix often include community-focused fundraising activities alongside entertainment and hospitality.
While the pub itself existed only for the duration of the F1 weekend, the auctioned signs became lasting keepsakes linked to a specific moment in the 2023 British Grand Prix.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R6AJ08 - Eberle Street has long been established as the heart of the LGBT Community here in Liverpool, comprising of multiple night clubs, bars and the once world famous Garlands nightclub. As it stood, the street infrastructure was unloved with poor paving, lighting and cellar doors making for an environment that didn't appeal to pedestrians during the day, and created obstacles for the high footfall after dark.
BCA Landscape created a unique identity to the once undesirable street, through the use of a bespoke contemporary paving and matching lights, with subtle hints to Judy Garland's Yellow Brick Road' dotted along the route. The use of a strong geometric pattern draws people up the street and along the way can be found bespoke paving units which have key characters and elements of the Wizard of Oz', from the iconic red shoes to Toto and even the famous Emerald City.
'Eberle Street is a hub of Liverpool's night time economy and LGBT community so its redesign required an imaginative approach that had the verve and style to celebrate its unique position and elevate it to a prominence it richly deserves. Once complete it will also greatly enhance the experience of the Commercial District and promote the north-south walking routes between the district and the rest of the city centre. As the nation recently saw with Granby Street's Turner Prize winning transformation, meaningful regeneration has to be led by those who live and work in that area and the input from the business community has been a key part of the entire process.'' Probably 17th-century - suggested by the date 1685 in a gable - this much restored inn is worth a visit to see two small rooms of real character. Behind the servery an old latch door leads into a small snug with two good baffles/screens by the entrance with colourful pictorial stained and leaded panels at the top, early 20th-century fixed seating and bell pushes around most of the room but, sadly, a modern brick fireplace. Down a short passageway on the rear right a sliding door leads into the small Trophy Room with Victorian fixed seating with carved arms / bench ends and bell pushes all around the room but, again, another modern brick fireplace. The front of the pub is three rooms opened up and modernised but the bar counter may be old with a modern frontage of carved panels added and an area on the front right does retain old fixed seating and bell pushes. Active bowling green at rear owned by the pub and a modern function room is used by a folk club (Sunday evenings).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PG60X6 - Godalming Borough Hall is a municipal building in Bridge Street in Godalming, England. The building is the meeting place of Godalming Town Council.
Following significant population growth, especially after the London and South Western Railway reached the town in 1849, the area became a municipal borough with the Pepper Pot as its town hall in 1875. In May 1907 tenders were invited from contractors to extend the public hall in Bridge Street to the west to create new municipal buildings for the borough. The extension was built in red brick with stone dressings and the work was completed in 1908. The design of the enlarged structure involved an asymmetrical main frontage with ten bays facing onto Bridge Street
the central section of three bays, which slightly projected forward, featured arcading on the ground floor, three sash windows with stone surrounds on the first floor and a pediment above with an oculus in the tympanum. The left hand section featured, in the central bay, a doorway with a canopy on the ground floor and a panel containing the borough coat of arms on the first floor. The right hand section featured, in the end bay which slightly projected forward, a round headed doorway on the ground floor and a tri-part sash window on the first floor with a pediment above.
The building continued to serve as the meeting place of Godalming Borough Council for much of the 20th century, but ceased to be the local seat of government when Waverley Borough Council was formed with its headquarters in Guildford in 1974. Waverley Council moved to new council offices in The Burys just behind the borough hall in 1980. The borough hall subsequently became the meeting place for Godalming Town Council.
Works of art in the borough hall include a portrait by Godfrey Kneller of the locally-born sailor, Admiral Sir John Balchen, who became governor of the Greenwich Naval Hospital in March 1743

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K967KB - Pick-your-own pumpkins offer diversified income channels
The market for pumpkins in the UK has seen a huge growth in the past decade, with the public increasingly looking for an on-farm experience and to buy directly from producers.
Pumpkins can offer significant additional income for farmers if done well, especially when accompanied by other value-added extras such as refreshments or attractions.
There are two main markets either selling direct to the consumer or wholesale. Each has its benefits and challenges.
When growing for wholesale, there are often extra costs for grading, on-farm storage and transport. The labour-intensive harvest process for wholesale at scale will also need seasonal labour, which can be difficult to find.
Selling direct to consumers poses other challenges, including public access to the farm.
Pumpkin seeds can be planted indoors from mid- to late April, however it is more common to plant seeds and seedlings outdoors from May to early June.
Lack of fruit can be an issue and diseases include powdery mildew and grey mould. Pumpkins can also suffer in very wet seasons and may need irrigation during a dry summer.
Will John and Chris Creed, consultants at agricultural adviser Adas, say that the market is becoming saturated in some regions of the UK. However, businesses can still be profitable if they are able to market effectively.
What are the essential requirements and costs?
Mr Creed says: To be successful, you have got to have infrastructure, hard car parking, booking systems, strong social media campaigns and good road access.
A potentially less risky option is to grow for an existing business, which may have already invested in the infrastructure to cater for the public.
Some farm shops and garden centres have very good infrastructures to accommodate the public, but they haven't got much ground. So they may be able to grow some and then stock up from a local grower, which can be a win-win situation for everybody,

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBK6 - Street performance or busking is the act of performing in public places for gratuities. In many countries, the rewards are generally in the form of money but other gratuities such as food, drink or gifts may be given. Street performance is practiced all over the world and dates back to antiquity. People engaging in this practice are called street performers or buskers in the United Kingdom. Outside of New York, buskers is not a term generally used in American English.
Performances are anything that people find entertaining, including acrobatics, animal tricks, balloon twisting, caricatures, clowning, comedy, contortions, escapology, dance, singing, fire skills, flea circus, fortune-telling, juggling, magic, mime, living statue, musical performance, puppeteering, snake charming, storytelling or reciting poetry or prose, street art such as sketching and painting, street theatre, sword swallowing, ventriloquism and washboarding.
The first recorded instances of laws affecting buskers were in ancient Rome in 462 BC. The Law of the Twelve Tables made it a crime to sing about or make parodies of the government or its officials in public places
the penalty was death. Louis the Pious excluded histriones and scurrae, which included all entertainers without noble protection, from the privilege of justice. In 1530 Henry VIII ordered the licensing of minstrels and players, fortune-tellers, pardoners and fencers, as well as beggars who could not work. If they did not obey they could be whipped on two consecutive days.
In the United States under constitutional law and most European common law, the protection of artistic free speech extends to busking. In the U.S. and many countries, the designated places for free speech behaviour are the public parks, streets, sidewalks, thoroughfares and town squares or plazas

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M4K87G - Hackney Empire is a theatre on Mare Street, in the London Borough of Hackney. Originally designed by Frank Matcham it was built in 1901 as a music hall, and expanded in 2001. Described by The Guardian as the most beautiful theatre in London' it is an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation.
Hackney Empire is a grade II* listed building. The theatre was built as a music hall in 1901, designed by the architect Frank Matcham. Architecture scholar Nicholas Pevsner described the splendid Hackney Empire, with its ornate terracotta exterior and sumptuous seventy-seven galleried auditorium as a key example of Victorian and Edwardian architecture. There is a statue of Thalia, the Greek muse of comedy, on the roof of the theatre: this was removed in 1979, but later reinstalled.
ATV bought the theatre to use as studios in the mid-1950s and shows such as Take Your Pick and Oh, Boy! were broadcast live. Certain episodes of Opportunity Knocks were also filmed at the theatre. Some scenes from Emergency Ward 10 were also filmed there. From 1963 to 1984, the theatre was used by the Mecca Organisation as a bingo hall
wrestling matches also occurred there during the 1960s.
In 1984, Mecca found the building too expensive to maintain as a bingo hall, and it was offered to Cartoon Archetypical Slogan Theatre (CAST), a satirical touring theatre group, headed by Claire and Roland Muldoon, as a London base. They also mounted successful variety nights headlined by a new breed of alternative comedy acts, such as Ben Elton, Dawn French, and Jennifer Saunders.
The theatre was threatened with demolition, and in 1986, actor-manager Roland Muldoon mounted a campaign to acquire the freehold and to re-open the Hackney Empire as a permanent performance space
allowing the theatre to return to theatrical use for its 85th anniversary.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JREBKE - A table dance, or bartop dance, is a dance performed at (or on) a table or bar, as opposed to on a stage. It may be an erotic dance performed by a sex worker or it may be done as a leisure activity.
Sex work
In some jurisdictions, a table dance may be an alternative to a lap dance, due to laws preventing exotic dancers from making contact with customers. For example, in Waterloo, Ontario, a table dance is performed on a small portable platform the dancer takes around to patrons' tables. The Windmill Theatre in Soho, London operated as a strip club from the 1990s until 2018. The club's licensing conditions included a no touching rule and the club had a licence for striptease, pole-dancing and table dancing.
Establishments
Bartop dancing is encouraged at Coyote Ugly's chain of bars
Similar is the bartop dance, performed for the entertainment of those seated at the bar. The film Coyote Ugly ushered in a fad of bartop dancing establishments. Set in New York City's bar of the same name, several establishments around the city (e.g. Coyote Ugly, Hogs and Heifers, Red Rock West Saloon, Doc Holliday's Saloon) actively encouraged women to jump on the bar and dance, contributing to an Anything Goes atmosphere. Hogs and Heifers encourages dancers to leave their brassiere hanging from the ceiling to commemorate their dance. However, table dancing is forbidden at many events and establishments

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JJYRET - One of London's most well-known squares, Golden Square in Soho has a long, fascinating history, and a fantastic location.
The name Golden Square' is believed to originate from Gelding Close which referred to land being used for horse grazing. The area gained fame in the 1700s as the home of many foreign diplomatic envoys from countries as Poland, Portugal, Genoa, and Russia. Indeed, Bavarian minister Count Haslang was resident at numbers 23 & 24 when he served as envoy to England between 1739 and 1783. These houses were later attacked during the anti-Catholic Gordon Riots in 1780. These properties later purchased by the Roman Catholic Bishop for the London District in 1788 to build the current Warwick Street Chapel behind these houses.
In 1750, residents were empowered to elect thirteen trustees to beautify the square and a statue, believed to represent Charles II was erected in 1753. The statue design has been attributed to Flemish-born sculptor John van Nost. Golden Square has also had many famous residents, both real and fictional. Angelica Kauffman, the first female member of the Royal Academy and painter Martin Archer Shee both called this fantastic square home. In addition, Golden Square was also the setting for Ralph Nickelby's dingy house in Charles Dicken's 1839 novel Nicholas Nickelby.
By the end of the Nineteenth Century, the area was home to the wool and worsted yarn trade. The first company moved in in 1868, and by 1900 there were at least 70 firms connected with the yarn trade based in Golden Square. Many houses were later demolished to make way for offices and warehouses and the only properties with surviving 18th Century elements are Nos. 11, 21, 23, and 24. An air raid shelter was dug under Golden Square during the Second World War and the iron fence was taken for salvage. After the war restoration work was carried out and the new paved garden reopened to the public in November 1952.
The garden features fastigate hornbeam trees, ornamental crab

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JJYREY - Carnaby Street is a pedestrianised shopping street in Soho in the City of Westminster, Central London. Close to Oxford Street and Regent Street, it is home to fashion and lifestyle retailers, including many independent fashion boutiques.
Streets crossing, or meeting with, Carnaby Street are, from south to north, Beak Street, Broadwick Street, Kingly Court, Ganton Street, Marlborough Court, Lowndes Court, Fouberts Place, Little Marlborough Street and Great Marlborough Street. The nearest London Underground station is Oxford Circus.
The Carnaby Street contingent of Swinging London stormed into North American and international awareness with the 15 April 1966 publication of Time magazine's cover story[16] that extolled this street's role:
Perhaps nothing illustrates the new swinging London better than narrow, three-block-long Carnaby Street, which is crammed with a cluster of the 'gear' boutiques where the girls and boys buy each other clothing
In October 1973, the Greater London Council pedestrianised the street.[18] Vehicular access is restricted between 11 am and 8 pm. A comparison of pedestrian traffic before and after the change revealed that there had been a 30% increase in the number of pedestrians entering the area. In early 2010, a campaign was commenced for pedestrianisation in the adjacent area of Soho
To celebrate the memory of Freddie Mercury after the release of Bohemian Rhapsody, the Carnaby Street arch got a rework with Queen's logo being put up in early 2019.
Despite John Stephen closing his final business in 1975 (he died in 2004 aged 70) and the gradual movement to novelty shops with an appeal to the ever-increasing tourist trade, the boutique trade founded in Carnaby Street in 1957 by Stephen is still visible through the many shops of that ilk that still exist in the street today. Although featured in many books about London, the only book published which is exclusively about Carnaby Street and traces the history from the 1600s to 1970

Exactly two years after his death, two magnificent murals were unveiled in memory of the great Sir Ken Dodd on the wall of the theatre he helped save.
The murals now adorning the Liverpool Royal Court were commissioned by The Comedy Trust and created by the artist Paul Curtis, best known for his Liverbird wings mural.
Lady Anne Dodd who performed the emotional ceremony told the ECHO: They are just amazing, absolutely amazing. I'm humbled. I'm thrilled to bits. I woke up sad this morning because it's a sad day in one way, but this just shows he brought happiness.
Ken would have felt humbled he would have said it was tattyfilarious, plumptious and I'm totally discomknockerated!'
The first of the bright and colourful murals shows a sharply dressed Doddy, tickling stick in hand, by the seaside, in reference to Blackpool but also his love of playing seaside theatres all over the country.
The second features a couple of Diddy Men and words from the Squire of Knotty Ash's trademark song Happiness, which was sung by the Liverpool Royal Court Community Choir, as a big crowd gathered outside the theatre for the unveiling.
Lady Anne added: They couldn't be in a better place. They will be seen by so many people walking by or going past on buses and hopefully they will make people smile.
The murals were funded by the Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson with a contribution from his City Fund.
Sir Ken, who performed at the Royal Court across several decades, starting in the 1950s, played a huge part in keeping the theatre open in the 1970s.
In 1974, he entered the Guinness Book of Records thanks to his Marathon Mirthquake at the theatre it lasted three hours, 30 minutes and six seconds and included 1,500 jokes.
Later, he became part of the Royal Court Theatre and Arts Trust and even sold the first tickets at the box office for Laughter Show

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M8DJE4 - Patrick Kavanagh (21 October 1904 30 November 1967) was an Irish poet and novelist. His best-known works include the novel Tarry Flynn, and the poems On Raglan Road and The Great Hunger. He is known for his accounts of Irish life through reference to the everyday and commonplace
Patrick Kavanagh was born in rural Inniskeen, County Monaghan, in 1904, the fourth of ten children of James Kavanagh and Bridget Quinn
Kavanagh's first published work appeared in 1928[7] in the Dundalk Democrat and the Irish Independent. Kavanagh had encountered a copy of the Irish Statesman, edited by George William Russell, who published under the pen name AE and was a leader of the Irish Literary Revival. Russell at first rejected Kavanagh's work but encouraged him to keep submitting, and he went on to publish verse by Kavanagh in 1929 and 1930. This inspired the farmer to leave home and attempt to further his aspirations. In 1931, he walked 80 miles (abt. 129 kilometres) to meet Russell in Dublin, where Kavanagh's brother was a teacher. Russell gave Kavanagh books, among them works by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Victor Hugo, Walt Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Robert Browning, and became Kavanagh's literary adviser. Kavanagh joined Dundalk Library and the first book he borrowed was The Waste Land by T. S. Eliot.
Kavanagh's first collection, Ploughman and Other Poems, was published in 1936. It is notable for its realistic portrayal of Irish country life, free of the romantic sentiment often seen at the time in rural poems, a trait he abhorred. Published by Macmillan in its series on new poets, the book expressed a commitment to colloquial speech and the unvarnished lives of real people, which made him unpopular with the literary establishment. Two years after his first collection was published he had yet to make a significant impression. The Times Literary Supplement described him as a young Irish poet of promise rather than of achievement

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M8DJE9 - Con Houlihan (6 December 1925 4 August 2012) was an Irish sportswriter. Despite only progressing to national journalism at the age of 46, he became the greatest and the best-loved Irish sports journalist of all
Over a lengthy career, Houlihan covered many Irish and international sporting events, from Gaelic football and hurling finals, to soccer and rugby World Cups, the Olympics and numberless race meetings inside and outside Ireland.
He was a journalist with the Irish Press group writing for The Irish Press, Evening Press and sometimes The Sunday Press, until the group's demise in 1995. He wrote the Tributaries column and Evening Press back sports page Con Houlihan column
Houlihan died in the morning of 4 August 2012 in St James's Hospital in Dublin. Often considered one of Ireland's finest writers, he left behind a legacy of immense sports journalism that spanned over 60 years. A minute's silence was observed in his memory ahead of Kerry's All-Ireland Senior Football Championship quarter-final defeat to Donegal at Croke Park the following day. His last column, in which he wished Katie Taylor well, was published the day after his death.[6] His funeral took place on 8 August 2012
A bronze bust of Houlihan was unveiled in his hometown of Castleisland in 2004. In 2011, a bronze plaque was installed outside The Palace bar in Dublin. The sculpture is in the foyer of The Bank pub on College Green. Cons Corner and a Bronze Bust with a quote are in The Palace Bar.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DC9382 - Sir Kenneth Arthur Dodd OBE (8 November 1927 11 March 2018) was an English comedian, singer and occasional actor. He was described as the last great music hall entertainer, and was primarily known for his live stand-up performances.
A lifelong resident of Knotty Ash in Liverpool, Dodd's career as an entertainer started in the mid-1950s. His performances included rapid and incessant delivery of often surreal jokes, and would run for several hours, frequently past midnight. His verbal and physical comedy was supplemented by his red, white and blue tickling stick prop, and often introduced by his characteristic upbeat greeting of How tickled I am! He interspersed the comedy with songs, both serious and humorous, and with his original speciality, ventriloquism. He also had several hit singles primarily as a ballad singer in the 1960s, and occasionally appeared in dramatic roles. He performed on radio and television, and popularised the characters of the Diddy Men.
Dodd was described as the last great music hall entertainer.[14] His stand-up comedy style was fast and relied on the rapid delivery of one-liner jokes. He said that his comic influences included other Liverpool comedians like Arthur Askey, Robb Wilton, Tommy Handley and the cheeky chappy from Brighton, Max Miller
Dodd had many hit records, charting on 18 occasions in the UK Top 40, including his first single Love Is Like a Violin (1960), produced on Decca Records by Alex Wharton, which charted at number 8 (UK). His version of Bill Anderson's song Happiness charted in 1964 and became Dodd's signature song

After being a bingo hall for many years, it has now been restored as a cinema and theatre, showing classic films and staging live shows
The building is in the Art Deco style, it was constructed in 1932 to a design by William Thornley. It opened as a cine-variety venue. It had an original seating capacity of 1878 (other sources say 1848)- and in its restored state has 614 seats in the stalls, 318 in the front circle and 254 in the rear circle (the balcony). The site involved cutting into the rock.
Compton Theatre Organ
To possess an original Compton Organ is rare, but the Plaza organ is notable in its own right. It was the first Compton Theatre Organ to be built with sunburst decorative glass panels. These can be illuminated in a range of colours.
The Compton organ is a three manual instrument with a unique 150 stop tab layout which was designed for the Plaza and her sister cinema by Norman Cocker the resident organist from Manchester Cathedral and Arthur Ward one of the original Directors of the Stockport Plaza. It has in addition 42 toe and thumb pistons. There are 11 ranks of pipes situated in 2 chambers, one over the other to the right of the stage. These are concealed behind the decorative grill in the wall. There is no electric amplification, as the sound is produced acoustically straight from the organ pipes. The console is on a lift so that it can rise out of the floor, adding to the theatrical effect. As there is no amplification the organist controls the volume using swell pedals that operate shutters in the grill. It was played before shows, and during silent movies, variety acts and musical interludes between films. The organ can supply a large range of effects from sleigh bells to aircraft and sea sounds

Hulton's son Sir Edward Hulton expanded his father's newspaper interests and sold his publishing business based in London and Manchester to Lord Beaverbrook and Lord Rothermere when he retired in 1923. Most of the Hulton newspapers were sold again soon afterwards to the Allied Newspapers consortium formed in 1924 (renamed Kemsley Newspapers in 1943 and bought by Roy Thomson in 1959).
Earlier names of the buildings associated with publishing that were incorporated into the development include Withy Grove Printing House, the Chronicle Buildings, Allied House, Kemsley House, Thomson House and Maxwell House. Kemsley House on the corner of Withy Grove and Corporation Street was developed gradually from 1929 and became the largest newspaper printing house in Europe. The site housed a printing press until 1986. Robert Maxwell bought the property and subsequently closed it down The building was left unused for over a decade and fell derelict.

The large facility, originally built in 1919, was designed at a time when Coney Island was the primary summer resort area for the New York metropolitan area, with all of the rail lines in southern Brooklyn funneling service to the area. It is one of the largest elevated transportation terminals in the world.
The station has eight tracks and four island platforms, with trains entering from both compass north and south. It is located at the corner of Stillwell and Surf Avenues in Coney Island, the site of the former West End Terminal. Geographically, the station is the southernmost terminal in the New York City Subway system.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBJ9PJ - Coney Island is a peninsular residential neighborhood, beach, and leisure/entertainment destination of Long Island on the Coney Island Channel, which is part of the Lower Bay in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City. Coney Island was formerly the westernmost of the Outer Barrier islands on Long Island's southern shore, but in the early 20th century it became connected to the rest of Long Island by land fill. The residential portion of the peninsula is a community of 60,000 people in its western part, with Sea Gate to its west, Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach to its east, the Lower Bay to the south, and Gravesend to the north.
Coney Island was originally part of the colonial town of Gravesend. By the mid-19th century, it became a seaside resort, and by the late 19th century, amusement parks were also built at the location. The attractions reached a historical peak during the first half of the 20th century, declining in popularity after World War II and following years of neglect. The area was revitalized with the opening of the MCU Park in 2001 and several amusement rides in the 2010s.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DFEA - The Old Vic is a theatre located just south-east of Waterloo Station in London on the corner of The Cut and Waterloo Road. Established in 1818 as the Royal Coburg Theatre, it was taken over by Emma Cons in 1880 when it was known formally as the Royal Victoria Hall. In 1898, a niece of Cons, Lilian Baylis assumed management and began a series of Shakespeare productions in 1914. The building was damaged in 1940 during air raids and it became a Grade II* listed building in 1951 after it reopened.
It was also the name of a repertory company that was based at the theatre and formed the core of the National Theatre of Great Britain on its formation in 1963, under Laurence Olivier. The National Theatre remained at the Old Vic until new premises were constructed on the South Bank, opening in 1976. The Old Vic then became the home of Prospect Theatre Company, at that time a highly successful touring company which staged such acclaimed productions as Derek Jacobi's Hamlet. However, with the withdrawal of funding for the company by the Arts Council of Great Britain in 1980 for breaching its touring obligations, Prospect disbanded in 1981. The theatre underwent complete refurbishment in 1985. In 2003, Kevin Spacey was appointed as new artistic director of the Old Vic Theatre Company which received considerable media attention. In 2015, Matthew Warchus was appointed the new Artistic Director.
On May 26, 2022, Spacey was charged by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in the United Kingdom with four counts of sexual assault against three complainants. The alleged offenses occurred between 2005 and 2013 in London and Gloucestershire. According to the Crown Prosecution Service, it would be possible to formally charge Spacey only if he entered England or Wales, which would entail extradition if Spacey refused to do so voluntarily. Nevertheless, in a statement to Good Morning America on May 31, 2022, Spacey said that he would voluntarily appear in the U.K. as soon as can be arrange

In 1875 the City Architect, Robert Morham completely restored and remodeled the exterior giving it back its medieval look (based on Gordon of Rothiemay's map of 1647). This work included remodeling the interior to create museum spaces.

The Scandalli Brothers was born in Camerano in 1916 , when Silvio Scandalli ( 1889 -1977) with his brothers Henry and Albino, began making accordions in a small home workshop, and then sell them in nearby Loreto , place of pilgrimage for many believers. It was in 1923 one of the first sales contracts with which the Scandalli brothers undertook to build 25 barrel organs per year for the Belgian Giuseppe Fieres of Mont-Saint-Amand-lez-Gan . In 1930 the Scandalli Brothersit had grown to open a new factory which had a hundred workers and a production of 10 accordions daily [1] .
Photo of a Scandalli from the first half of the 1900s preserved in the International Accordion Museum of Camerano
In those years when the mechanics of the instrument was in continuous development and renewal, the company's research activity was very important, testified by the numerous projects presented at the Patent Office in Milan : the first, from 1924 , bore the title of Improvement in mechanical key devices to combine several voices in accord in bellows accordions , while in 1932 a system was invented that allowed to dismantle the part of the mechanical control organs of both the bass and the chords [1] . In the following years, then, Silvio Scandalli decided to include a small research and patent department in the company.

A 9d (or 4.5p) saturday morning showing for kids, or a 1/9 stalls or a 2/- two shilling circle. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HCM2 - The Printworks entertainment venue is located on the revamped Withy Grove site of the business premises of the 19th century newspaper proprietor Edward Hulton, established in 1873 and later expanded.
Robert Maxwell bought the property for £1 and subsequently closed it down. The building was left unused for over a decade and fell derelict.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D9466J - The King's became famous for being a venue belonging to the theatre empire Howard & Wyndham. The theatre was originally commissioned by the Edinburgh Building Company Ltd, chaired by Robert C. Buchanan. The King's was built as a rival to the successful Royal Lyceum Theatre, which had been established for over twenty years. Buchanan was experienced in the industry as he already managed a large number of provincial variety theatres, however this was his most ambitious project yet.
The foundation stone was laid on 18 August 1906 by Andrew Carnegie, with copies of the current newspaper and coins buried underneath. During construction the owners experienced financial troubles being unable to pay the final costs to the contractor William Stewart Cruikshank and to the architects, surveyors and lawyers, at which stage the operating rights were transferred to a new King's Theatre Company, of which Cruikshank was a major shareholder. Buchanan was managing director and he took on the day-to-day running of the King's, with Cruikshank`s son A. Stewart Cruikshank as manager. An attempt to sell the theatre to Howard & Wyndham Ltd chaired by Michael Simons, and therefore clear the debts, failed and the Cruikshank family decided to run it themselves with A Stewart Cruikshank becoming managing director in June 1908
The theatre is home to Edinburgh's mainstream annual pantomime, which is produced by Qdos Entertainment. The theatre is now run by the Capital Theatres which also controls the Festival Theatre. The theatre is also an important venue over the Festival period. Plans are now underway for a new refurbishment scheme to bring the theatre up to modern day standards
The theatre's interior and exterior were designed separately. James Davidson designed the building itself. The interior of the King's was designed by JD Swanston

Every year, the IFI rewards its audiences by hosting an Open Day, with free cinema screenings and tours. In 2011, the IFI was awarded Dublin's Best Cinema in Dublin Living Awards. In its first two decades the IFI saw over 3.1 million cinema attendances to see 63,000 screenings of over 5,900 different films. The new car park, which was due to open
in December 2017, is a great example of
how architects and contractors can work in
partnership with Maple to transform typically
dull and utilitarian buildings into an integral and
aesthetically appealing part of the urban realm.
With its hexagon-featured golden façade, the
car park complements the other elements of
the £107m Time Square development.
The new car park is an integral and important
part of the Time Square project as it will
underpin and support the whole scheme, said
the leader of Warrington Borough Council, Terry
O'Neill.
Architect's ratings
Leach Rhodes Walker described us as excellent'
after the successful collaboration. Maple's
knowledge and craftsmanship was excellent
throughout, said LRW's lead project designer,
Ka Yin Man. From when we spoke to sales
about the commercials, to (dealing with) the
design and projects teams, the whole experience
was collaborative. In a post-project interview,
the architects' firm gave us top marks for design
services, project support, meeting deadlines
and the quality of the finished product. Added
Ka Yin: Maple were always helpful, and any
questions were dealt with promptly. Everyone
was very knowledgeable and accommodating.
The end result was even better than expected
The project was one of the first to use the new
dedicated prototype area at Maple's factory in
Stockport. The architects and contractors I & H
Brown Construction were able to view real-life
examples of the bespoke perforated panels and
golden hexagon cut-outs - at actual size. The
prototypes were powder-coated in the specified
colour, and fitted to the display framework using
actual fittings - meaning that any changes to the
design or specification could be made without
it having a major impact on timings or budget

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DFF2 - The Old Vic is a theatre located just south-east of Waterloo Station in London on the corner of The Cut and Waterloo Road.
