Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAXJ8 - Architectural detail from a former railway warehouse on Deansgate in Manchester city centre, England, showing stone lettering reading London and the Continent set into a red-brick facade. The building was originally constructed as part of Manchester's extensive Victorian railway infrastructure, associated with long-distance rail connections linking the industrial city to London and continental Europe. Once used for storage and distribution during the height of Britain's railway and manufacturing era, the structure has since been repurposed as part of a wider regeneration of the Deansgate area. Today, the former warehouse forms part of a mixed-use district containing retail, leisure, and entertainment venues, illustrating the adaptive reuse of historic industrial buildings within modern city centres. The image highlights Manchester's layered urban history, where surviving railway architecture and industrial heritage coexist with contemporary commercial and cultural life, reflecting broader patterns of regeneration and heritage conservation in post-industrial British cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAXJC - The Manchester Opera House photographed on Quay Street in Manchester city centre, England. The image shows the ornate Edwardian facade of the historic theatre, a long-established venue for opera, musicals, concerts, comedy, and touring West End productions. Originally opened in the early 20th century, the Opera House has remained a prominent part of Manchester's cultural life, combining classical architectural detailing with a central role in the modern entertainment economy of the city. Surrounded by contemporary office buildings and located close to Manchester's main commercial and cultural districts, the theatre illustrates the contrast between historic performance venues and the modern urban landscape. The building continues to attract audiences from across Greater Manchester and beyond, highlighting the enduring importance of live performance, heritage venues, and cultural infrastructure within major British cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RTJRXM - St Paul's Church is a Church of England parish church located in Bedford Street, Covent Garden, central London. It was designed by Inigo Jones as part of a commission for the 4th Earl of Bedford in 1631 to create houses and buildings fit for the habitations of Gentlemen and men of ability. As well as being the parish church of Covent Garden, the church has gained the nickname of the actors' church by a long association with the theatre community.
Completed in 1633, St Paul's was the first entirely new church to be built in London since the Reformation. Its design and the layout of the square have been attributed to Inigo Jones since the 17th century, although firm documentary evidence is lacking. According to an often repeated story, recorded by Horace Walpole, Lord Bedford asked Jones to design a simple church not much better than a barn, to which the architect replied Then you shall have the handsomest barn in England
The temple front with a portico on the square has never in fact been the main entrance, although this may have been Jones's first intention. The altar lies behind this wall, and the entrance is at the far end to this. The stone facing of this facade is also later
originally it was apparently brick with stucco. The other sides of the building remain brick, with details in stone. The triangular pediments at both ends are in wood.
St Paul's connection with the theatre began as early as 1663 with the establishment of the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, and was further assured in 1723 with the opening of Covent Garden Theatre, now the Royal Opera House.
On 9 May 1662, Samuel Pepys noted in his diary the first Italian puppet play under the portico?the first recorded performance of Punch and Judy, a fact commemorated by the annual MayFayre service in May.
The portico of St Paul's was the setting for the first scene of Shaw's Pygmalion, the play that was later adapted as My Fair Lady.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RH8AFD - Odeon Cinema Harrogate, North Yorkshire
East Parade, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG1 5LB
Designed by: Harry Weedon and W Calder Robson
Built: 1936
Standing on the corner of East Parade and Station Avenue in the North Yorkshire town of Harrogate is arguably one of Britain's finest Modernist cinema buildings. Today, the building survives as part of the Odeon cinema chain after eight decades of continuous use as a working cinema.
The Odeon company traces its history back to 1930 when the firm established by Oscar Deutsch (1893-1941) opened its first cinema bearing the Odeon name, at Perry Barr in Birmingham, on 4 August 1930. The company saw its greatest period of expansion during the 1930s, as the increasing popularity of cinema-going allowed Deutsch to open in excess of 250 cinemas prior to the Second World War.
Like the majority of Odeon's cinemas, the Odeon Harrogate was built in the Streamlined Moderne style and was a product of the Weedon Partnership. Harry Weedon (1887-1970) became involved with the Odeon chain in 1934 and his company produced designs for some of the finest buildings of the period.
The dominant feature of the Odeon Harrogate's design is a central brown-brick tower, with a projecting, taller 'fin' clad in biscuit-coloured faience tiles. At the top of the fin 'cinema' is spelt out in slender, sans-serif lettering. The tower is set in front of the main auditorium, of which the uppermost section is visible behind the tower. The top section is broken with projecting bands of darker brown brick, and the bands continue down the face of the tower on its southern face.
The northern range of the cinema (to the left when viewed face-on) comprises a five-bay, four-storey block clad in the same biscuit-coloured faience, save for the base of the building, which is clad in black faience. The faience tiles are rectangular and are set in pairs horizontally, with thin joints between the paired tiles, and thicker, more prominent horizontal joints

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3D2 - A close view of an illuminated exterior sign for Playhouse Gentlemen's Club in Cardiff city centre. The circular sign, clearly displaying the name Playhouse along with heraldic-style graphics, is mounted above street level and lit with warm bulbs, designed to attract attention within a busy urban streetscape.
The venue operates as part of Cardiff's night-time leisure economy, which includes bars, clubs, live music venues and adult entertainment establishments concentrated around the city centre. Signs such as this play a functional and symbolic role, marking spaces associated with nightlife, consumption and adult-oriented leisure within the public realm.
The surrounding architecture reflects Cardiff's historic commercial streets, with upper-floor residential or office accommodation above ground-level leisure uses. The contrast between traditional building fa??ades and modern illuminated signage illustrates how historic city centres adapt to changing patterns of entertainment and economic activity.
Photographed under conditions where artificial lighting is prominent, the image is well suited for editorial use covering nightlife economies, urban culture, adult entertainment regulation, city-centre leisure districts, and debates around the role of such venues within modern British cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RE4716 - The Plaza cinema opened its doors on December 14, 1929. The architects were William and Segar Owen. They would also go on to design The Regal in the town.
The exterior was described as being severe in character. There was a rough cast finish relieved by by a central entrance, leaded light windows, a wrought iron and glass canopy sheltering all doorways and an effective Won Lite electric sign on a high facade over the main entrance.
There was a mahogany paybox occupying a central position flanked by two doors leading to the auditorium. Two staircases took patrons to the balcony area.
The auditorium was decorated in blue and orange. Fibrous plastering and colouring was carried out by Warrington firm Winstanley and Company.
Stage lighting was supplied by Holophane. In the 1960s it became a bingo club until 2011.
In the operating box there were two Kalee 8 machines and British Talking Picture (BTP) sound system.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5W2 - This image shows a large Google Chrome branded ferris wheel installed at Silverstone Circuit during the Formula One British Grand Prix in July 2023. Set against a vivid blue summer sky, the observation wheel rises above crowds of racegoers moving through the circuit's entertainment and hospitality areas, adding a festival-like atmosphere to one of the UK's biggest annual sporting events.
Temporary attractions such as ferris wheels, funfair stalls, and branded entertainment zones have become a familiar part of modern Formula One weekends, reflecting the sport's evolution into a global lifestyle and entertainment spectacle. The prominent Google Chrome colour scheme highlights the role of major international technology brands in motorsport sponsorship and event marketing.
The dense crowd below, dressed for warm weather, conveys the scale and popularity of the British Grand Prix, which regularly attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors across the race weekend. The image captures not just the racing itself, but the wider social experience of attending Formula One at Silverstone, where motorsport, branding, leisure, and mass participation intersect.
This photograph is well suited for editorial use covering Formula One, global brand sponsorship, major UK sporting events, crowd culture, and the transformation of motorsport into a large-scale summer festival environment.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PR - This image shows winners of a charity auction posing with illustrated pub signs from The Petrol Head, a themed pop-up pub at Silverstone Woodlands camping during the 2023 Formula 1 British Grand Prix weekend.
The Petrol Head pub formed part of the temporary festival-style facilities provided for F1 fans staying at the Woodlands campsite near Silverstone Circuit.
As part of the event, a selection of bespoke, illustrated pub signs created specifically for the pop-up venue were auctioned to raise money for charity.
The auction took place during the race weekend, with all proceeds from the sale of the signs donated to charitable causes supported by the organisers.
Such charity auctions are a regular feature of large UK motorsport camping events, combining memorabilia, fan engagement, and fundraising in an informal social setting.
The two winning bidders are shown holding their purchased signs immediately after the auction, marking both the fundraising success and the temporary nature of the installation.
The event highlights how major sporting weekends such as the British Grand Prix often include community-focused fundraising activities alongside entertainment and hospitality.
While the pub itself existed only for the duration of the F1 weekend, the auctioned signs became lasting keepsakes linked to a specific moment in the 2023 British Grand Prix.

The poster features bold, expressive typography and illustrated artwork typical of theatrical advertising, designed to attract audiences and convey a sense of spectacle and entertainment.
Prominently credited on the poster are performers and contributors including Denis Noble, Joyce Blackham, Richard Curnock, Serafina Dileo, Raf de la Torre, Juliet Morell, and musical director Anatole Fistoulari. Probably 17th-century - suggested by the date 1685 in a gable - this much restored inn is worth a visit to see two small rooms of real character. Behind the servery an old latch door leads into a small snug with two good baffles/screens by the entrance with colourful pictorial stained and leaded panels at the top, early 20th-century fixed seating and bell pushes around most of the room but, sadly, a modern brick fireplace. Down a short passageway on the rear right a sliding door leads into the small Trophy Room with Victorian fixed seating with carved arms / bench ends and bell pushes all around the room but, again, another modern brick fireplace. The front of the pub is three rooms opened up and modernised but the bar counter may be old with a modern frontage of carved panels added and an area on the front right does retain old fixed seating and bell pushes. Active bowling green at rear owned by the pub and a modern function room is used by a folk club (Sunday evenings).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PG60X6 - Godalming Borough Hall is a municipal building in Bridge Street in Godalming, England. The building is the meeting place of Godalming Town Council.
Following significant population growth, especially after the London and South Western Railway reached the town in 1849, the area became a municipal borough with the Pepper Pot as its town hall in 1875. In May 1907 tenders were invited from contractors to extend the public hall in Bridge Street to the west to create new municipal buildings for the borough. The extension was built in red brick with stone dressings and the work was completed in 1908. The design of the enlarged structure involved an asymmetrical main frontage with ten bays facing onto Bridge Street
the central section of three bays, which slightly projected forward, featured arcading on the ground floor, three sash windows with stone surrounds on the first floor and a pediment above with an oculus in the tympanum. The left hand section featured, in the central bay, a doorway with a canopy on the ground floor and a panel containing the borough coat of arms on the first floor. The right hand section featured, in the end bay which slightly projected forward, a round headed doorway on the ground floor and a tri-part sash window on the first floor with a pediment above.
The building continued to serve as the meeting place of Godalming Borough Council for much of the 20th century, but ceased to be the local seat of government when Waverley Borough Council was formed with its headquarters in Guildford in 1974. Waverley Council moved to new council offices in The Burys just behind the borough hall in 1980. The borough hall subsequently became the meeting place for Godalming Town Council.
Works of art in the borough hall include a portrait by Godfrey Kneller of the locally-born sailor, Admiral Sir John Balchen, who became governor of the Greenwich Naval Hospital in March 1743

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K967KB - Pick-your-own pumpkins offer diversified income channels
The market for pumpkins in the UK has seen a huge growth in the past decade, with the public increasingly looking for an on-farm experience and to buy directly from producers.
Pumpkins can offer significant additional income for farmers if done well, especially when accompanied by other value-added extras such as refreshments or attractions.
There are two main markets ? either selling direct to the consumer or wholesale. Each has its benefits and challenges.
When growing for wholesale, there are often extra costs for grading, on-farm storage and transport. The labour-intensive harvest process for wholesale at scale will also need seasonal labour, which can be difficult to find.
Selling direct to consumers poses other challenges, including public access to the farm.
Pumpkin seeds can be planted indoors from mid- to late April, however it is more common to plant seeds and seedlings outdoors from May to early June.
Lack of fruit can be an issue and diseases include powdery mildew and grey mould. Pumpkins can also suffer in very wet seasons and may need irrigation during a dry summer.
Will John and Chris Creed, consultants at agricultural adviser Adas, say that the market is becoming saturated in some regions of the UK. However, businesses can still be profitable if they are able to market effectively.
What are the essential requirements and costs?
Mr Creed says: To be successful, you have got to have infrastructure, hard car parking, booking systems, strong social media campaigns and good road access.
A potentially less risky option is to grow for an existing business, which may have already invested in the infrastructure to cater for the public.
Some farm shops and garden centres have very good infrastructures to accommodate the public, but they haven't got much ground. So they may be able to grow some and then stock up from a local grower, which can be a win-win situation for everybody,

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBK6 - Street performance or busking is the act of performing in public places for gratuities. In many countries, the rewards are generally in the form of money but other gratuities such as food, drink or gifts may be given. Street performance is practiced all over the world and dates back to antiquity. People engaging in this practice are called street performers or buskers in the United Kingdom. Outside of New York, buskers is not a term generally used in American English.
Performances are anything that people find entertaining, including acrobatics, animal tricks, balloon twisting, caricatures, clowning, comedy, contortions, escapology, dance, singing, fire skills, flea circus, fortune-telling, juggling, magic, mime, living statue, musical performance, puppeteering, snake charming, storytelling or reciting poetry or prose, street art such as sketching and painting, street theatre, sword swallowing, ventriloquism and washboarding.
The first recorded instances of laws affecting buskers were in ancient Rome in 462 BC. The Law of the Twelve Tables made it a crime to sing about or make parodies of the government or its officials in public places
the penalty was death. Louis the Pious excluded histriones and scurrae, which included all entertainers without noble protection, from the privilege of justice. In 1530 Henry VIII ordered the licensing of minstrels and players, fortune-tellers, pardoners and fencers, as well as beggars who could not work. If they did not obey they could be whipped on two consecutive days.
In the United States under constitutional law and most European common law, the protection of artistic free speech extends to busking. In the U.S. and many countries, the designated places for free speech behaviour are the public parks, streets, sidewalks, thoroughfares and town squares or plazas

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M4K87G - Hackney Empire is a theatre on Mare Street, in the London Borough of Hackney. Originally designed by Frank Matcham it was built in 1901 as a music hall, and expanded in 2001. Described by The Guardian as ?the most beautiful theatre in London' it is an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation.
Hackney Empire is a grade II* listed building. The theatre was built as a music hall in 1901, designed by the architect Frank Matcham. Architecture scholar Nicholas Pevsner described the splendid Hackney Empire, with its ornate terracotta exterior and sumptuous seventy-seven galleried auditorium as a key example of Victorian and Edwardian architecture. There is a statue of Thalia, the Greek muse of comedy, on the roof of the theatre: this was removed in 1979, but later reinstalled.
ATV bought the theatre to use as studios in the mid-1950s and shows such as Take Your Pick and Oh, Boy! were broadcast live. Certain episodes of Opportunity Knocks were also filmed at the theatre. Some scenes from Emergency ? Ward 10 were also filmed there. From 1963 to 1984, the theatre was used by the Mecca Organisation as a bingo hall
wrestling matches also occurred there during the 1960s.
In 1984, Mecca found the building too expensive to maintain as a bingo hall, and it was offered to Cartoon Archetypical Slogan Theatre (CAST), a satirical touring theatre group, headed by Claire and Roland Muldoon, as a London base. They also mounted successful variety nights headlined by a new breed of alternative comedy acts, such as Ben Elton, Dawn French, and Jennifer Saunders.
The theatre was threatened with demolition, and in 1986, actor-manager Roland Muldoon mounted a campaign to acquire the freehold and to re-open the Hackney Empire as a permanent performance space
allowing the theatre to return to theatrical use for its 85th anniversary.

It shows jokes and punchlines from comedians who have performed in Blackpool over the decades, totalling 160,000 letters. Each letter is cut from granite and inset in white concrete, in a variety of typefaces. Five months after it was opened, the local council controversially removed part of the work because viewers were thought to be in danger of stepping backwards into the path of trams. The work earned Young the 2012 Marsh Award for Excellence in Public Sculpture. and in 2014 was joint winner of the International Society of Typographic Designers' International Typographic Award
Visible through the glass floor of the Tower Eye on the promenade some 380 ft (120 m) below, is Blackpool's famous Comedy Carpet. In front of the tower, the Comedy Carpet by Gordon Young is a celebration of the resort's long comedic history in the form of a visual pavement of jokes and catchphrases, embedded into the surface of the revamped promenade.
From above, it is easy to read the eternal catchphrase of the late Sir Bruce Forsyth, Nice to see you - to see you... nice!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JR3MRX - The Winter Gardens is a large entertainment complex in Blackpool, Lancashire, England, which includes a theatre, ballroom and conference facilities. Opened in 1878, it is a Grade II* listed building, operated by Blackpool Entertainment Company Limited[2] on behalf of Blackpool Council, which purchased the property from Leisure Parcs Ltd as part of a ?40 million deal in 2010.
The Winter Gardens has hosted the annual conferences of British political parties and trade unions and its owners claim that every Prime Minister since World War II has addressed an audience at the venue.
It has also hosted the Blackpool Dance Festival since its inception in 1920, and the World Matchplay darts tournament since 1994. The annual dance competitions Miss Dance of Great Britain and Dance Master UK are hosted there annually.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JREBKE - A table dance, or bartop dance, is a dance performed at (or on) a table or bar, as opposed to on a stage. It may be an erotic dance performed by a sex worker or it may be done as a leisure activity.
Sex work
In some jurisdictions, a table dance may be an alternative to a lap dance, due to laws preventing exotic dancers from making contact with customers. For example, in Waterloo, Ontario, a table dance is performed on a small portable platform the dancer takes around to patrons' tables. The Windmill Theatre in Soho, London operated as a strip club from the 1990s until 2018. The club's licensing conditions included a no touching rule and the club had a licence for striptease, pole-dancing and table dancing.
Establishments
Bartop dancing is encouraged at Coyote Ugly's chain of bars
Similar is the bartop dance, performed for the entertainment of those seated at the bar. The film Coyote Ugly ushered in a fad of bartop dancing establishments. Set in New York City's bar of the same name, several establishments around the city (e.g. Coyote Ugly, Hogs and Heifers, Red Rock West Saloon, Doc Holliday's Saloon) actively encouraged women to jump on the bar and dance, contributing to an Anything Goes atmosphere. Hogs and Heifers encourages dancers to leave their brassiere hanging from the ceiling to commemorate their dance. However, table dancing is forbidden at many events and establishments

Blackpool Tower is also the common name for the Tower Buildings, an entertainment complex in a red-brick three-storey block that comprises the tower, Tower Circus, the Tower Ballroom, and roof gardens, which was designated a Grade I listed building in 1973
The Blackpool Tower Company was founded by London-based Standard Contract & Debenture Corporation in 1890
it bought an aquarium on Central Promenade with the intention of building a replica Eiffel Tower on the site. John Bickerstaffe, a former mayor of Blackpool, was asked to become chairman of the new company
Two Lancashire architects, James Maxwell and Charles Tuke, designed the tower. A new system of hydraulic riveting was used, based on the technology of Fielding & Platt of Gloucester. The total cost for the design and construction of the tower and buildings was about ?290,000. Five million Accrington bricks, 3,478 long tons (3,534 t) of steel and 352 long tons (358 t) of cast iron were used to construct the tower and base

His career took him from being one of the key DJs in the acid house movement of the late 1980s to being a remixer of tracks by the likes of Happy Mondays, New Order, Bj??rk, the Orb, the Future Sound of London and My Bloody Valentine.
His production work on Primal Scream's album Screamadelica, adding samples, loops and creating an influential mix of hard rock, house and rave, helped the record win the first ever Mercury Music Prize in 1992 and become one of the most celebrated albums of the 1990s

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JJGB2E - The French House is a pub and dining room at 49 Dean Street, Soho, London. It was previously known as the York Minster, but was informally called the French pub or the French house by its regulars. It sells more Ricard than anywhere else in Britain, and only serves beer in half-pints except on 1 April, when a recent custom apparently has been that Suggs serves the first pint of the day
The pub was opened by a German national named Christian Schmitt in 1891 and traded as York Minster. Schmitt died in 1911. His wife, Bertha Margaretha Schmitt, continued to run the pub until 1914
After the fall of France during the Second World War, General Charles de Gaulle escaped to London where he formed the Free French Forces. His speech rallying the French people, ?? tous les Fran??ais, is said to have been written in the pub.
The French House has always been popular with artists and writers. Brendan Behan wrote large portions of The Quare Fellow there, and Dylan Thomas once left the manuscript of Under Milk Wood under his chair. Other regulars over the years have included Francis Bacon, Tom Baker, Daniel Farson, Lucian Freud, Slim Gaillard, Augustus John, Malcolm Lowry, and John Mortimer.
The name was changed to The French House after the fire at York Minster in 1984. Contributions toward the restoration fund started arriving at the pub. Upon forwarding them, Gaston Berlemont found that the cathedral had been receiving deliveries of claret intended for him.
In recent years, landlady Lesley Lewis has encouraged Soho photographers to exhibit in the pub with regular contributions from John Claridge, William Corbett, Carla Borel and Peter Clark
and members of illustrators' collective, Le Gun. Claridge based his Soho Faces project at the French from 2004 to 2017. He said, I decided to document the customers at The French in earnest. For me, it was the one place in Soho that still held its Bohemian character, where people truly chose to share time and conversation

Exactly two years after his death, two magnificent murals were unveiled in memory of the great Sir Ken Dodd ? on the wall of the theatre he helped save.
The murals now adorning the Liverpool Royal Court were commissioned by The Comedy Trust and created by the artist Paul Curtis, best known for his Liverbird wings mural.
Lady Anne Dodd ? who performed the emotional ceremony ? told the ECHO: They are just amazing, absolutely amazing. I'm humbled. I'm thrilled to bits. I woke up sad this morning because it's a sad day in one way, but this just shows he brought happiness.
Ken would have felt humbled ? he would have said it was tattyfilarious, plumptious and ?I'm totally discomknockerated!'
The first of the bright and colourful murals shows a sharply dressed Doddy, tickling stick in hand, by the seaside, in reference to Blackpool but also his love of playing seaside theatres all over the country.
The second features a couple of Diddy Men and words from the Squire of Knotty Ash's trademark song ? Happiness, which was sung by the Liverpool Royal Court Community Choir, as a big crowd gathered outside the theatre for the unveiling.
Lady Anne added: They couldn't be in a better place. They will be seen by so many people ? walking by or going past on buses ? and hopefully they will make people smile.
The murals were funded by the Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson with a contribution from his City Fund.
Sir Ken, who performed at the Royal Court across several decades, starting in the 1950s, played a huge part in keeping the theatre open in the 1970s.
In 1974, he entered the Guinness Book of Records thanks to his Marathon Mirthquake at the theatre ? it lasted three hours, 30 minutes and six seconds and included 1,500 jokes.
Later, he became part of the Royal Court Theatre and Arts Trust ? and even sold the first tickets at the box office for Laughter Show

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M8DJE4 - Patrick Kavanagh (21 October 1904 ? 30 November 1967) was an Irish poet and novelist. His best-known works include the novel Tarry Flynn, and the poems On Raglan Road and The Great Hunger. He is known for his accounts of Irish life through reference to the everyday and commonplace
Patrick Kavanagh was born in rural Inniskeen, County Monaghan, in 1904, the fourth of ten children of James Kavanagh and Bridget Quinn
Kavanagh's first published work appeared in 1928[7] in the Dundalk Democrat and the Irish Independent. Kavanagh had encountered a copy of the Irish Statesman, edited by George William Russell, who published under the pen name AE and was a leader of the Irish Literary Revival. Russell at first rejected Kavanagh's work but encouraged him to keep submitting, and he went on to publish verse by Kavanagh in 1929 and 1930. This inspired the farmer to leave home and attempt to further his aspirations. In 1931, he walked 80 miles (abt. 129 kilometres) to meet Russell in Dublin, where Kavanagh's brother was a teacher. Russell gave Kavanagh books, among them works by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Victor Hugo, Walt Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Robert Browning, and became Kavanagh's literary adviser. Kavanagh joined Dundalk Library and the first book he borrowed was The Waste Land by T. S. Eliot.
Kavanagh's first collection, Ploughman and Other Poems, was published in 1936. It is notable for its realistic portrayal of Irish country life, free of the romantic sentiment often seen at the time in rural poems, a trait he abhorred. Published by Macmillan in its series on new poets, the book expressed a commitment to colloquial speech and the unvarnished lives of real people, which made him unpopular with the literary establishment. Two years after his first collection was published he had yet to make a significant impression. The Times Literary Supplement described him as a young Irish poet of promise rather than of achievement

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M8DJE9 - Con Houlihan (6 December 1925 ? 4 August 2012) was an Irish sportswriter. Despite only progressing to national journalism at the age of 46, he became the greatest and the best-loved Irish sports journalist of all
Over a lengthy career, Houlihan covered many Irish and international sporting events, from Gaelic football and hurling finals, to soccer and rugby World Cups, the Olympics and numberless race meetings inside and outside Ireland.
He was a journalist with the Irish Press group writing for The Irish Press, Evening Press and sometimes The Sunday Press, until the group's demise in 1995. He wrote the Tributaries column and Evening Press back sports page Con Houlihan column
Houlihan died in the morning of 4 August 2012 in St James's Hospital in Dublin. Often considered one of Ireland's finest writers, he left behind a legacy of immense sports journalism that spanned over 60 years. A minute's silence was observed in his memory ahead of Kerry's All-Ireland Senior Football Championship quarter-final defeat to Donegal at Croke Park the following day. His last column, in which he wished Katie Taylor well, was published the day after his death.[6] His funeral took place on 8 August 2012
A bronze bust of Houlihan was unveiled in his hometown of Castleisland in 2004. In 2011, a bronze plaque was installed outside The Palace bar in Dublin. The sculpture is in the foyer of The Bank pub on College Green. Cons Corner and a Bronze Bust with a quote are in The Palace Bar.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DC9382 - Sir Kenneth Arthur Dodd OBE (8 November 1927 ? 11 March 2018) was an English comedian, singer and occasional actor. He was described as the last great music hall entertainer, and was primarily known for his live stand-up performances.
A lifelong resident of Knotty Ash in Liverpool, Dodd's career as an entertainer started in the mid-1950s. His performances included rapid and incessant delivery of often surreal jokes, and would run for several hours, frequently past midnight. His verbal and physical comedy was supplemented by his red, white and blue tickling stick prop, and often introduced by his characteristic upbeat greeting of How tickled I am! He interspersed the comedy with songs, both serious and humorous, and with his original speciality, ventriloquism. He also had several hit singles primarily as a ballad singer in the 1960s, and occasionally appeared in dramatic roles. He performed on radio and television, and popularised the characters of the Diddy Men.
Dodd was described as the last great music hall entertainer.[14] His stand-up comedy style was fast and relied on the rapid delivery of one-liner jokes. He said that his comic influences included other Liverpool comedians like Arthur Askey, Robb Wilton, Tommy Handley and the cheeky chappy from Brighton, Max Miller
Dodd had many hit records, charting on 18 occasions in the UK Top 40, including his first single Love Is Like a Violin (1960), produced on Decca Records by Alex Wharton, which charted at number 8 (UK). His version of Bill Anderson's song Happiness charted in 1964 and became Dodd's signature song

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGPE - Britain's ugliest building: Winner of the Carbuncle Cup 2018 revealed
Redrock Stockport, a leisure complex which cost a whopping ?45 million, has been named Britain's ugliest building of 2018.
The structure, just south of Manchester includes a ten-screen cinema, restaurants, bars, retail and a 340 space multi-storey car park across 75,000 ft? of space.
The complex faced some fierce eyesore competition from various building structures.
The original nominator slated it as one of the most horrendous architectural responses ever conceived for Greater Manchester.
The Carbuncle Cup was established by Building Design (BD) in 2006 as a light-hearted way of drawing attention to a serious problem - the bad architecture blighting the country's town and cities.
The Carbuncle Cup: Britain's ugliest buildings decided
The judges, chaired by BD's editor Thomas Lane, took readers' comments into account during the judging process.
These included: Absolute monstrosity. I've seen better-looking prisons.
The building was designed by BDP for the local council and is part of a wider ?1 billion regeneration project for the community - but judges said the shed-like building ridiculed the town centre.
One judge even went as far in saying: You feel sorry for the people of Stockport.

After being a bingo hall for many years, it has now been restored as a cinema and theatre, showing classic films and staging live shows
The building is in the Art Deco style, it was constructed in 1932 to a design by William Thornley. It opened as a cine-variety venue. It had an original seating capacity of 1878 (other sources say 1848)- and in its restored state has 614 seats in the stalls, 318 in the front circle and 254 in the rear circle (the balcony). The site involved cutting into the rock.
Compton Theatre Organ
To possess an original Compton Organ is rare, but the Plaza organ is notable in its own right. It was the first Compton Theatre Organ to be built with sunburst decorative glass panels. These can be illuminated in a range of colours.
The Compton organ is a three manual instrument with a unique 150 stop tab layout which was designed for the Plaza and her sister cinema by Norman Cocker the resident organist from Manchester Cathedral and Arthur Ward one of the original Directors of the Stockport Plaza. It has in addition 42 toe and thumb pistons. There are 11 ranks of pipes situated in 2 chambers, one over the other to the right of the stage. These are concealed behind the decorative grill in the wall. There is no electric amplification, as the sound is produced acoustically straight from the organ pipes. The console is on a lift so that it can rise out of the floor, adding to the theatrical effect. As there is no amplification the organist controls the volume using swell pedals that operate shutters in the grill. It was played before shows, and during silent movies, variety acts and musical interludes between films. The organ can supply a large range of effects from sleigh bells to aircraft and sea sounds

Hulton's son Sir Edward Hulton expanded his father's newspaper interests and sold his publishing business based in London and Manchester to Lord Beaverbrook and Lord Rothermere when he retired in 1923. Most of the Hulton newspapers were sold again soon afterwards to the Allied Newspapers consortium formed in 1924 (renamed Kemsley Newspapers in 1943 and bought by Roy Thomson in 1959).
Earlier names of the buildings associated with publishing that were incorporated into the development include Withy Grove Printing House, the Chronicle Buildings, Allied House, Kemsley House, Thomson House and Maxwell House. Kemsley House on the corner of Withy Grove and Corporation Street was developed gradually from 1929 and became the largest newspaper printing house in Europe. The site housed a printing press until 1986. Robert Maxwell bought the property and subsequently closed it down The building was left unused for over a decade and fell derelict.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBJ9PJ - Coney Island is a peninsular residential neighborhood, beach, and leisure/entertainment destination of Long Island on the Coney Island Channel, which is part of the Lower Bay in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City. Coney Island was formerly the westernmost of the Outer Barrier islands on Long Island's southern shore, but in the early 20th century it became connected to the rest of Long Island by land fill. The residential portion of the peninsula is a community of 60,000 people in its western part, with Sea Gate to its west, Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach to its east, the Lower Bay to the south, and Gravesend to the north.
Coney Island was originally part of the colonial town of Gravesend. By the mid-19th century, it became a seaside resort, and by the late 19th century, amusement parks were also built at the location. The attractions reached a historical peak during the first half of the 20th century, declining in popularity after World War II and following years of neglect. The area was revitalized with the opening of the MCU Park in 2001 and several amusement rides in the 2010s.

The area was revitalized with the opening of the MCU Park in 2001 and several amusement rides in the 2010s.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBJ9W9 - Coney Island is a peninsular residential neighborhood, beach, and leisure/entertainment destination of Long Island on the Coney Island Channel, which is part of the Lower Bay in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City.

The Tron Steeple, as it became known, still stands in Glasgow Cross, one of the few remaining pre-Victorian buildings in Glasgow.
The area now known as 'Merchant City' was developed from the 1750s onwards. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DFEA - The Old Vic is a theatre located just south-east of Waterloo Station in London on the corner of The Cut and Waterloo Road. Established in 1818 as the Royal Coburg Theatre, it was taken over by Emma Cons in 1880 when it was known formally as the Royal Victoria Hall. In 1898, a niece of Cons, Lilian Baylis assumed management and began a series of Shakespeare productions in 1914. The building was damaged in 1940 during air raids and it became a Grade II* listed building in 1951 after it reopened.
It was also the name of a repertory company that was based at the theatre and formed the core of the National Theatre of Great Britain on its formation in 1963, under Laurence Olivier. The National Theatre remained at the Old Vic until new premises were constructed on the South Bank, opening in 1976. The Old Vic then became the home of Prospect Theatre Company, at that time a highly successful touring company which staged such acclaimed productions as Derek Jacobi's Hamlet. However, with the withdrawal of funding for the company by the Arts Council of Great Britain in 1980 for breaching its touring obligations, Prospect disbanded in 1981. The theatre underwent complete refurbishment in 1985. In 2003, Kevin Spacey was appointed as new artistic director of the Old Vic Theatre Company which received considerable media attention. In 2015, Matthew Warchus was appointed the new Artistic Director.
On May 26, 2022, Spacey was charged by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in the United Kingdom with four counts of sexual assault against three complainants. The alleged offenses occurred between 2005 and 2013 in London and Gloucestershire. According to the Crown Prosecution Service, it would be possible to formally charge Spacey only if he entered England or Wales, which would entail extradition if Spacey refused to do so voluntarily. Nevertheless, in a statement to Good Morning America on May 31, 2022, Spacey said that he would voluntarily appear in the U.K. as soon as can be arrange

The last night of the club was 28 June 1997, a club night called 'Freak' featuring DJs Elliot Eastwick and Dave Haslam (the final live performance was by Spiritualized on 15 June 1997). The club remained open for a short period as an art gallery before finally going bankrupt and closing for good. After the Ha??ienda officially closed, it was used as a venue for two free parties organised by the Manchester free party scene. One of the parties ended in a police siege of the building while the party continued inside. These parties resulted in considerable damage and painted graffiti to the Ben Kelly designed interior.
Following a number of years standing empty, The Whitworth Street West site was purchased from the receivers by Crosby Homes. They chose to demolish the nightclub, and reuse the site for the construction of domestic flats. The iconic name was kept for the new development, with the Ha??ienda name licensed from Peter Hook, who owns the name and trademark. The nightclub was demolished in 2002 - Crosby Homes had acquired the property some time before that and, on Saturday 25 November 2000, held a charity auction of the various fixtures and fittings from the nightclub. Clubgoers and enthusiasts from across the country attended to snap up memorabilia ranging from the DJ booth box and radiators to emergency exit lights. The DJ booth was bought by Bobby Langley, ex Ha??ienda DJ and Head of Merchandise for Sony Music London for an undisclosed fee.
Crosby Homes were widely criticised for using the Hacienda brand name - and featuring the strapline Now the party's over...you can come home in the promotional material. Another controversial feature of the branding campaign was the appropriation of many of the themes which ran through the original building. One of these was the iconic yellow and black hazard stripe motif which was a powerful symbol in the club's original design, featuring as it did on the club's

The building is now occupied by The People's Story Museum and is protected as a category A listed building
In 1875 the City Architect, Robert Morham completely restored and remodeled the exterior giving it back its medieval look (based on Gordon of Rothiemay's map of 1647). This work included remodeling the interior to create museum spaces.

The Scandalli Brothers was born in Camerano in 1916 , when Silvio Scandalli ( 1889 -1977) with his brothers Henry and Albino, began making accordions in a small home workshop, and then sell them in nearby Loreto , place of pilgrimage for many believers. It was in 1923 one of the first sales contracts with which the Scandalli brothers undertook to build 25 barrel organs per year for the Belgian Giuseppe Fieres of Mont-Saint-Amand-lez-Gan . In 1930 the Scandalli Brothersit had grown to open a new factory which had a hundred workers and a production of 10 accordions daily [1] .
Photo of a Scandalli from the first half of the 1900s preserved in the International Accordion Museum of Camerano
In those years when the mechanics of the instrument was in continuous development and renewal, the company's research activity was very important, testified by the numerous projects presented at the Patent Office in Milan : the first, from 1924 , bore the title of Improvement in mechanical key devices to combine several voices in accord in bellows accordions , while in 1932 a system was invented that allowed to dismantle the part of the mechanical control organs of both the bass and the chords [1] . In the following years, then, Silvio Scandalli decided to include a small research and patent department in the company.

The Great Northern Warehouse is the former railway goods warehouse of the Great Northern Railway in Manchester city centre, England. It has been redeveloped as a car park and leisure complex. The building is located at the junction of Deansgate and Peter Street in the city centre. It was granted Grade II* listed building status on 3 October 1974.
The warehouse is a hugely impressive block, of blue brick below (and) red brick with blue brick dressings above. It was built to be fireproof with a steel frame, and built on a rectangular plan, 267 feet long by 217 feet wide and five storeys high, with 27 windows on the east and west sides and 17 windows on the north and south ends. All four sides have friezes lettered in white brick reading Great Northern Railway Company's Goods Warehouse. The warehouse was built above the Manchester and Salford Junction Canal, and a dock beneath was constructed to allow goods to be transferred to and from canal barges via shafts and a complex system of haulage using hydraulic power.[2] It is a unique survival of a three-way railway goods exchange station, serving the railway, canal and road networks of the Manchester region.
The development is owned by Capital & Regional and as of March 2013 comprises an AMC cinema, a casino, a bowling alley, bars, a Lifestyle Fitness gym, and a multi-storey car park operated by National Car Parks.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HCM2 - The Printworks entertainment venue is located on the revamped Withy Grove site of the business premises of the 19th century newspaper proprietor Edward Hulton, established in 1873 and later expanded.
Robert Maxwell bought the property for ?1 and subsequently closed it down. The building was left unused for over a decade and fell derelict.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBF05M - The illuminated marquee of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert outside the Ed Sullivan Theater on Broadway at West 53rd Street, 1697 Broadway, New York, NY 10019, photographed at night. The theatre has been the long-time home of CBS's flagship late-night programme and remains one of the most recognisable television venues in the United States.
In 2024, CBS announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would conclude in 2026, citing the changing economics of late-night television, declining linear broadcast audiences and rising production costs across the US network TV industry. The decision formed part of a wider retrenchment affecting late-night programming, rather than a single-show controversy.
Stephen Colbert addressed the announcement directly on air, telling viewers that the decision was made by the network, not himself, and emphasising his gratitude to the show's staff, crew and audience. He described the programme as a collaborative achievement and thanked CBS for the opportunity to host the show for over a decade, framing the ending as an industry shift rather than a personal or political dispute.
Since taking over the Late Show in 2015, Colbert became known for blending comedy, satire and political commentary, particularly during periods of heightened political tension in the United States. The show's run at the Ed Sullivan Theater continued a broadcasting legacy stretching back to The Ed Sullivan Show, reinforcing the venue's cultural significance.
Photographed against the night-time streetscape of Midtown Manhattan, the image carries strong editorial value for themes including American television history, media industry change, late-night comedy, political satire, and the transformation of broadcast entertainment in the digital era.

The blue roadster with white racing stripes is seen navigating a narrow cobbled street while film crew members and onlookers watch nearby.
The vehicle was used as part of filming for Fountain of Youth, an Apple Original Films production directed by Guy Ritchie and starring John Krasinski and Natalie Portman. Liverpool has become a popular filming location for international film and television productions, with its historic architecture and adaptable city streets frequently standing in for locations worldwide.
The presence of spectators, temporary traffic control, and production staff highlights the disruption and excitement that accompanies major film shoots in urban environments. The AC Cobra, an iconic British sports car first produced in the 1960s, adds a strong visual element to the scene, combining automotive heritage with contemporary film production.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating film and television production in the UK, Apple TV+ projects, classic cars in modern settings, Liverpool as a filming location, behind-the-scenes entertainment photography, and the use of historic vehicles in contemporary cinema.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBJ9RP - Coney Island is a peninsular residential neighborhood, beach, and leisure/entertainment destination of Long Island on the Coney Island Channel, which is part of the Lower Bay in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D9466J - The King's became famous for being a venue belonging to the theatre empire Howard & Wyndham. The theatre was originally commissioned by the Edinburgh Building Company Ltd, chaired by Robert C. Buchanan. The King's was built as a rival to the successful Royal Lyceum Theatre, which had been established for over twenty years. Buchanan was experienced in the industry as he already managed a large number of provincial variety theatres, however this was his most ambitious project yet.
The foundation stone was laid on 18 August 1906 by Andrew Carnegie, with copies of the current newspaper and coins buried underneath. During construction the owners experienced financial troubles being unable to pay the final costs to the contractor William Stewart Cruikshank and to the architects, surveyors and lawyers, at which stage the operating rights were transferred to a new King's Theatre Company, of which Cruikshank was a major shareholder. Buchanan was managing director and he took on the day-to-day running of the King's, with Cruikshank`s son A. Stewart Cruikshank as manager. An attempt to sell the theatre to Howard & Wyndham Ltd chaired by Michael Simons, and therefore clear the debts, failed and the Cruikshank family decided to run it themselves with A Stewart Cruikshank becoming managing director in June 1908
The theatre is home to Edinburgh's mainstream annual pantomime, which is produced by Qdos Entertainment. The theatre is now run by the Capital Theatres which also controls the Festival Theatre. The theatre is also an important venue over the Festival period. Plans are now underway for a new refurbishment scheme to bring the theatre up to modern day standards
The theatre's interior and exterior were designed separately. James Davidson designed the building itself. The interior of the King's was designed by JD Swanston

Ka Yin: Maple were always helpful, and any
questions were dealt with promptly. Everyone
was very knowledgeable and accommodating.
The end result was even better than expected
The project was one of the first to use the new
dedicated prototype area at Maple's factory in
Stockport. The architects and contractors I & H
Brown Construction were able to view real-life
examples of the bespoke perforated panels and
golden hexagon cut-outs - at actual size. The
prototypes were powder-coated in the specified
colour, and fitted to the display framework using
actual fittings - meaning that any changes to the
design or specification could be made without
it having a major impact on timings or budget

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBJ9PW - Coney Island is a peninsular residential neighborhood, beach, and leisure/entertainment destination of Long Island on the Coney Island Channel, which is part of the Lower Bay in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DFF2 - The Old Vic is a theatre located just south-east of Waterloo Station in London on the corner of The Cut and Waterloo Road.

Thereafter they went their separate ways........Alistair McDougald performing solo on the club cabaret circuit, Colin Mackenzie forming and playing with North Sea Gas folk group and Ian Lawson leading a successful rock band.
In 1992 the group reformed for a project in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with Bill Hill in which they performed acoustic music spanning 30 years........Skiffle, Folk, Protest, Calypso, Country and Contemporary.
One of the hits of this year's festival - Danny Kyle, BBC Radio Scotland.
Since then the band have been in great demand for concerts, folk festivals, corporate functions, pub, hotel and club gigs all over Scotland and on tour in Denmark and Ireland.
Peter Gillan joined the band when Ian retired due to work commitments in 1998. Having spent many years as a singer/guitarist playing solo on the folk and country scenes, Peter's experience has added yet another dimension to the band.
Walter Mowat joined Yard Of Ale in 2015. Walter has played in a number of folk and bluegrass bands over the years and also plays violin with the Really Terrible Orchestra.
Ian Lawson and Colin Mackenzie still occasionally feature with the band for larger gigs and as emergency stand-ins.
