Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DGE75P - The Parr Arms, a traditional British public house tied to Robinsons Brewery, stands in the village of Grappenhall near Warrington, Cheshire, photographed during a cold winter period in January with light snow covering the pub garden and surrounding paved areas. The white-painted pub building, with its distinctive signage, wrought iron gates and lantern-style lights, is shown under clear blue skies and low winter sunlight, which highlights the crisp textures of the exterior and the contrast between snow, brickwork and painted surfaces.
Village pubs such as the Parr Arms have long played an important role in English social life, acting as community meeting places and focal points for rural villages. In winter, particularly during periods of frost and snow, these pubs take on an additional sense of warmth and familiarity, even when photographed without people present. The quiet, undisturbed setting enhances the feeling of calm and nostalgia often associated with traditional English pubs in the countryside.
The image reflects wider themes of British pub culture, hospitality, leisure and local identity, as well as seasonal change and winter weather in England. As a Robinsons Brewery tied house, the pub also represents the long-established brewing traditions of the North West of England. The combination of heritage architecture, village setting and winter snow makes the photograph suitable for editorial use in travel features, lifestyle publications, hospitality coverage, calendars and broader cultural storytelling focused on traditional England and rural community life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCK3C - The exterior of The Britons Protection, a well-known historic public house on Great Bridgewater Street in Manchester city centre. The pub's distinctive black-and-white fa??ade, traditional signage and architectural detailing reflect its Victorian origins and long-standing place within Manchester's drinking and social history.
Photographed in daylight under a clear sky, suggesting fair spring or summer weather, the image captures the building in calm urban conditions, with soft natural light highlighting the decorative frontage and windows. The Britons Protection is widely regarded as one of Manchester's most traditional real-ale pubs and has long been associated with CAMRA and Britain's cask ale movement.
Surrounded by modern city-centre development and cultural venues, the pub stands as a surviving example of historic hospitality architecture in a rapidly changing urban environment. The image is well suited for editorial use illustrating British pub heritage, real-ale culture, independent hospitality, listed buildings, and Manchester's evolving cityscape.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP38P - The White Bear public house, located on Canute Place in Knutsford, Cheshire, is shown here in daylight with its distinctive black-and-white half-timbered facade and thatched roof. The building is a long-established local landmark in this historic Cheshire market town, reflecting traditional English inn architecture and pub culture.
Flower baskets and planted borders add seasonal colour to the frontage, reinforcing the pub's role as a welcoming focal point within the town centre. Knutsford is well known for its historic streetscape, independent businesses, and proximity to rural Cheshire countryside, and the White Bear remains a recognisable symbol of British hospitality and heritage pub design.
This image is suitable for editorial use covering UK pubs, traditional architecture, market towns, tourism, food and drink culture, and historic buildings in England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KF7FB4 - Ye Olde Starre Inne is a pub in the city centre of York, in England. The main block of the pub is a timber-framed structure, constructed in the mid-16th century, and a wing to its left was added in about 1600. By 1644, it was an inn named The Starre, the buildings lying at the back of a coaching yard, off the north side of Stonegate. This makes it the pub in York which can demonstrate the earliest date for its licence. After the Battle of Marston Moor the inn was used as a hospital for wounded soldiers.
Pub sign across Stonegate
In 1662, the pub was sold for ?œ250, and in 1683, Edward Thompson inherited it. In 1733, the pub's landlord was Thomas Bulman, and he signed an agreement with the owners of two shops on Stonegate that he could attach a sign to their premises, to hang across the street. A sign advertising the pub has hung across the street ever since.
The pub was extended in the early-18th century. In the 1840s, with the coming of the railway, the coaching yard was infilled with a new building, and the pub is now approached via a passageway underneath part of this building. Stables lay behind the pub and could be accessed from Duncombe Place, making the pub a popular location for visiting actors and circus performers.
In the late-19th century, the pub was again extended, at which time, it was known as Boddy's Inn. Surviving internal features include an early-18th century staircase, some 17th-century panelling, and an assortment of benches, glass and panelling from the 19th-century refit. Its former bar screen, of stained glass, probably dates from the 1890s and is believed to have been designed by J. W. Knowles & Co. who were based at 35 Stonegate.
In 1954, the pub was grade II listed

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JJPKRN - The Intrepid Fox was a pub at 97?99 Wardour Street, Soho, London, established in 1784 by the publican Samuel House, who named it after the prominent British Whig statesman Charles James Fox. The pub was located on the corner of Wardour Street and Peter Street.
During the general election of 1784, House provided free drink to the public.
More recently, it was a goth pub which also hosted heavy metal gigs. It closed in 2006, when the owner Mitchells & Butlers sold the building to property developers.
The Wardour Street building it formerly occupied is clad in faience, including a faience relief of Charles James Fox. As of 2017, the premises were in use as a branch of the Byron hamburger chain.
Successor venues
Later in 2006, the former Intrepid Fox management team opened a new venue of the same name, near Centre Point. The Guardian reported the new venue's imminent closure in 2014.
Following the closure of this venue, a third incarnation of the Intrepid Fox was opened at the Archway Tavern later in 2014

The purpose is to protect the surface of a table or any other surface where the user might place their beverage.
Public houses usually will have beermats spread out across the tables. They are used not just to protect the surface of the table, but, as they are usually made of paper, they can also be used to absorb condensation dripping along the glass or serve as an ad-hoc notepad. Beermats are often branded with trademarks or alcohol advertising. Beermats are not to be confused with bar mats, rectangular pieces of rubber or absorbent material used to protect the counter top and soak up spilled drinks in a bar or pub.

Dating from 1885 the Stalybridge Buffet Bar has retained the original marble-topped bar, back fittings and the welcoming fire.
A dozen years ago it was extended and included the 1st class ladies waiting room with its ornate ceiling, keeping all original features. Marlborough is a beautiful, ancient town bristling with fine buildings - and they don't come much better than The Bear Hotel.
Arkell's bought the pub in 1987 and these days there is no mistaking a place that is enthusiatically listed in The Good Pub Guide.
With its front in the High Street, facing the old Town Hall, and its side in The Parade, The Bear Hotel is a magnificent sight. It is late 19th century Jacobean and Georgian in style and has looked this way since 1889 after it was luxuriously re-built, but there had been an inn here at least by 1757.
A directory of 1914 was emphatic in its praise of The Bear Hotel. The house is fitted with all the latest and best appliances, it said. Wines, spirits and cigars of the finest quality and good stabling. It was then called The Bear and Castle and at some point was rechristened - possibly to avoid confusion with other Marlborough pubs with similar names.

Unfortunately I could not drop in to sample any of the seasonal ales on offer :-( . Purely in the interests of providing additional information you understand!
The Ring Of Bells is situated in the yard adjacent to St Elphins ( www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/4163626967/ ), Warrington's principle central church. The building is grade I listed in the same manner as the church. Its a fine traditional boozer and watering hole.
There are five constantly changing real ales alongside the usual suspects (lagers, alcopops etc). Dave down there has Cask Marque accreditation and are regularly featured in 'Out Inn Cheshire', our areas CAMRA magazine. The Cask Marque trust website will help you locate the nearest accredited real ale pub to you at www.cask-marque.co.uk/pubs/map.php. there is also an iPhone app (if you have such new fangled things) to do this for you too. Its called CaskFinder.
There is a varied menu at the Ring Of Bells and they have a four star rating from the local council. All the food is freshly prepared and as far as practical from locally sourced ingredients. They don't have Sky Sports, Jukebox, Pool table or other similar distractions from a friendly community atmosphere. If you are in town, drop in for a pint or two. Tell them you read about it here!

The Roman Baths complex is a site of historical interest in the English city of Bath. The house is a well-preserved Roman site for public bathing.
The Roman Baths themselves are below the modern street level. There are four main features: the Sacred Spring, the Roman Temple, the Roman Bath House and the Museum holding finds from Roman Bath. The buildings above street level date from the 19th century.
The Baths are a major tourist attraction and, together with the Grand Pump Room, receive more than one million visitors a year, with 1,037,518 people during 2009. It was featured on the 2005 TV program Seven Natural Wonders as one of the wonders of the West Country. Visitors can see the Baths and Museum but cannot enter the water. An audio guide is available in several languages.
In 2009 a grant of ?œ90,000 was made to Bath and North East Somerset Council to contribute towards the cost of re-developing displays and improving access to the Roman Baths, by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport/Wolfson Fund, which was established to promote improvements in Museums and Galleries in England.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4443599673 - 'I cycled on my bike the 50 minute journey to this excellent grade II listed country pub many times. The George and Dragon in the Cheshire Village of Great Budworth was originally under control of the Arley Hall estate. Its original origins are thought to go back to 1722, according to a stone inside inscribed in latin. Its picturesque look is mainly down to vanity in victorian times when Rowland Egerton-Warburton (lord of the manor) decided a makeover (a'la changing rooms) was in order. The village and pub were not picturesque enough apparently. The architect John Douglas was dispatched from the city of Chester to add elaborate tall chimneys, a turret and fancy mullioned windows.
The pub sign is very interesting, similar in make up to those seen on inns on the Rhine, south of Cologne, Germany. The cut-out pictorial sign itself came from Nuremberg. The hefty bracket it hangs from was a product of a local smithy. Above the inner door can be seen a stone containing a verse written by Rowland Egerton-Warburton.
A view from the church pulpit opposite the pub can be seen here www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/4333545672/

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4404975390 - 'The Star Inn is an interesting country pub a few miles from the town of Wantage in Oxfordshire, England. The pub is quite cosy and at the end of a narrow lane.
It is quite close to Oxfordshire's white horse at Ridgeway / Uffington Castle, An iron age hill fort covering over 30,000 sq metres, which was still in use in the Roman era. The nearby Wiltshire Three Castles Brewery make an excellent nutty 4.2% bitter called Uffington Castle and this was on at the Star and Mike is holding its pump here with his left hand.
Dawn and Mike have recently moved in and not yet seen spring or summer in the village. Theres a mixture of homecooked food and locals can pre-order and pop in with a plate to take it away if they want. Guest ales change every month from the local Hook Norton brewery and they had a well kept London Pride on there too. Note they have the Aspall traditional cider in stock too.

Moseley was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Museleie, although the number 50 bus did not head out to Druids Heath as early as that.
The barometer and tower of The Fighting Cocks pub is shown with the interior and that of the Prince of Wales a little down Alcester Road towards Birmingham. At the latter you get a deer on the wall and a wide selection of real ales, that makes it my favourite choice.
