Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8E1GF - The Mancunian railway-style nameplate displayed on the wall inside Stalybridge Buffet Bar on platform 4 of Stalybridge railway station, Tameside, Greater Manchester. The image shows a red curved decorative nameboard with white lettering mounted above a traditional pub interior wall, reflecting the bar's strong railway heritage and Mancunian identity. Stalybridge Buffet Bar is widely known as a surviving Victorian station buffet bar, dating from 1885, with original features, railway memorabilia, real ale and a reputation as one of the best-known stops on the Transpennine Real Ale Trail. The photograph is useful for editorial and commercial subjects including real ale pubs, historic railway stations, station bars, preserved pub interiors, railway memorabilia, Greater Manchester heritage, Tameside tourism, beer tourism, cask ale culture and the social history of British railway refreshment rooms. The word Mancunian links the scene to Manchester identity, local railway history, northern humour, regional pride and the long tradition of named locomotives, nameplates and railway signage used as decoration in pubs and heritage venues. The setting has indoor bar lighting and a warm, nostalgic feel, with the red sign standing out against a teal wall. This image may also suit stories about the Transpennine route, ale trails, railway pub crawls, heritage hospitality, Victorian architecture, Stalybridge station, platform pubs and the continued appeal of traditional real ale bars in an age of modernised railway travel. The photograph should be described carefully as a decorative railway-style sign or nameplate on display, unless the original locomotive provenance is independently confirmed. It captures a small but distinctive detail of a much-loved station pub, combining beer culture, rail enthusiasm, local identity and Greater Manchester pub heritage.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8PTRJ - Steam traction engine O.H.M.S., registration MA7892, travels through Lymm village centre in Warrington, Cheshire, towing a passenger trailer during the December Lymm Dickensian Christmas Festival. The preserved road steam vehicle is shown in steam with smoke rising from its chimney, polished red and black paintwork, large spoked wheels, brass detail, festive wreath decoration and a trailer carrying visitors through the historic village streets. Lymm Dickensian is a long-running volunteer-led community Christmas event, begun in 1985 and centred on Victorian dress, stalls, street entertainment, Santa activities, festive food, processions and seasonal atmosphere. The scene is useful for editorial coverage of heritage transport, steam traction engines, vintage vehicles, Christmas fairs, village festivals, community events, Cheshire tourism, Warrington heritage, industrial history, road steam preservation and family days out. Steam traction engines and road locomotives were once practical working machines used for haulage, agricultural tasks, showmen's work and local industry, but today they survive mainly through preservation societies, rallies, transport days and enthusiast owners. The photograph captures the pleasure and spectacle of a full-size steam vehicle operating slowly in a village setting, with wet roads, winter clothing, passengers, event barriers and town-centre buildings adding a documentary seasonal feel. It can support stories about Lymm's festive traditions, volunteer event organisation, road closures, historic transport displays, traction engine preservation, public nostalgia, engineering heritage, Christmas parades and the continuing popularity of steam power at local events. The O.H.M.S. name and MA7892 registration are visible on the engine front, although the exact maker and build history should be checked from owner or rally programme notes before making detailed claims about manufacturer or date.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X2CG2R - This image shows a green industrial shunting locomotive marked Rowntree Mackintosh Ltd, associated with the historic confectionery manufacturing operations of Rowntree in York, North Yorkshire, England. The locomotive would have been used for internal rail movements within the extensive factory railway system that served the Rowntree works, moving raw materials, packaging, and finished goods around the site and connecting with the wider national rail network.
Rowntree Mackintosh was formed in 1969 following the merger of Rowntree & Company of York and Mackintosh's of Halifax, creating one of Britain's most significant confectionery manufacturers. The company was later acquired by Nestlé in 1988, marking a major shift in the ownership of one of York's most important industrial employers. For much of the twentieth century, the Rowntree factory operated its own internal railway infrastructure, reflecting the scale and logistical complexity of large British manufacturing sites of the period.
Industrial shunting locomotives such as this were a common feature of factories, docks, and warehouses across the UK, allowing efficient on-site rail handling without relying on mainline locomotives. Today, surviving examples are valued as part of Britain's industrial and railway heritage, illustrating the close relationship between rail transport and manufacturing. This image is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to British industrial history, railway heritage, manufacturing, corporate history, and the social and economic history of York.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RBXAR0 - A tamping machine or ballast tamper, informally simply a tamper, is a self-propelled, rail-mounted machine used to pack (or tamp) the track ballast under railway tracks to make the tracks and roadbed more durable and level. Prior to the introduction of mechanical tampers, this task was done by manual labour with the help of beaters. As well as being faster, more accurate, more efficient and less labour-intensive, tamping machines are essential for the use of concrete sleepers since they are too heavy (usually over 250 kg or 550 lb) to be lifted by hand.
At its most basic, a tamping machine only packs the ballast. Some modern machines, sometimes known as tamper-liners or tamping and lining machines, also correct the alignment of the rails to make them parallel and level, in order to achieve a more comfortable ride for passengers and freight and to reduce the mechanical strain applied to the rails by passing trains. This is done by finding places where the sleepers have sunk from the weight of the passing trains or frost action, causing the track to sag. The tamper lifts each sleeper and the rails up, and packs ballast underneath. When the sleeper is laid down again, the sagged rails now sit at the proper level. Combining tamping and lining into a single machine saves time and money, as only one machine needs to be run over the track to perform both functions.
Tampers frequently work in concert with ballast regulators, as part of a section crew.

Unilever North West plant where Persil and Surf are made could close after 'irreversible decline in demand'
The household products giant said the plant is 'running at less than half its capacity'
Global household products giant Unilever is set to close an historic North West plant where Persil and Surf laundry detergents are made, after what it called an irreversible decline in demand for washing powder.
The British-Dutch firm said it was launching a strategic review into the 136-year-old factory in Warrington that employs more than 100 people but is currently running at less than half its capacity.
The statement from the firm, whose brands include Dove and Lynx, said one potential outcome would be to close the entire plant, and that it would be challenging to find a commercially sustainable alternative.
Unilever said: [We] appreciate that this is difficult and unsettling news for the 123 employees at Warrington and will support them through this review.
Jon Strachan, vice president of supply chain, added: This decision has not been taken lightly.
Whatever the outcome, the review is likely to require difficult decisions. We understand this will cause considerable concern for our Warrington employees, suppliers and the local community and that the outcome may have significant implications for them.
We are committed to treating our employees fairly throughout and providing support during this period of uncertainty.
Following the announcement, GMB, the union for Unilever workers, together with Warrington North MP Charlotte Nichols, have called on the company to save the historic factory.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39Y6M - Avanti West Coast is a train operating company in the United Kingdom owned by FirstGroup (70%) and Trenitalia (30%) that operates the West Coast Partnership.
During November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the InterCity West Coast franchise would be replaced by the West Coast Partnership (WCP). In August 2019, the DfT awarded the WCP franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium. On 8 December 2019, Avanti West Coast took over operations from the prior operating company Virgin Trains, which had run the franchise since 1997. Originally, the franchise was initially scheduled to run until March 2030, and had also been set to operate the initial High Speed 2 services from 2026. However, during December 2020, it was announced that First Trenitalia and the DfT had agreed to terminate the WCP franchise at the earlier date of 31 March 2026 as part of the abolition of the franchise system. Since then a number of contract changes have taken place due to COVID-19 and then poor performance by the company. As of March 2023, the company's contract will expire in October 2023.
Between 14 August and 18 September 2022, Avanti West Coast reduced its timetable, citing unofficial strike action from its employees. However, this allegation was disputed by Aslef, which accused the company of lying and blamed their lack of recruitment, especially of train drivers, for the problems. Trains were running at one service per hour on the majority of routes, as opposed to the three which would typically occur on the London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly route. Following these changes, Avanti West Coast was subject to public criticism
news stories emerged of numerous train cancellations, overcrowded services, delays, and expensive fares. Many commuters faced difficulties reaching their destinations on the reduced services and some travellers have been left to wait for to two days before travel for tickets to be released for sale

The ECHO teamed up with Virgin Trains to help celebrate the firm's 20th birthday and invited people to come up with a name for one of their iconic Pendolinos, used on the West Coast mainline between Lime Street and Euston.
Other shortlisted suggestions for the new name included Mighty Mersey, Pride of Liverpool, Merseyside Express and Liver Bird.
Arif Mahmood, Virgin Trains station manager for Liverpool Lime Street said the response to the competition had been overwhelming.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RADRX1 - Milton Keynes Central railway station serves Milton Keynes and surrounding parts of Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire (England). The station is located on the West Coast Main Line about 50 miles (80 km) northwest of London. The station is served by Avanti West Coast intercity services, and by West Midlands Trains regional services.
This is the principal station for the city, one of seven serving the Milton Keynes urban area. Milton Keynes Central, which opened on 17 May 1982, is by far the busiest and most important of these, as well as being the largest in terms of platforms in use, having overtaken Bletchley when platforms 2A and 6 became operational.
Milton Keynes Central has a total of seven platforms. Platforms 1 and 3 are the south and northbound slow platforms, while 4 and 6 are the south and northbound fast platforms. Platforms 2 and 5 are reversible, being slow and fast respectively. Platform 2 is used mainly by terminating stopping services from London Euston, whilst platforms 1 and 3 are used by West Midlands Trains services between Euston and Northampton, Birmingham New Street or Crewe. Platforms 4, 5 and 6 are used by Avanti West Coast inter-city express services between London and the West Midlands, north Wales, the north-west or Scotland.
Platform 2A is a five-car south-facing bay platform, originally intended for the extension of Marston Vale Line services from Bedford into Milton Keynes Central this proposal no longer appears in plans for East West Rail, being replaced by a planned service to/from Oxford or Aylesbury (see below). Meanwhile, platform 2A is used only by exception when additional platform capacity is needed, such as when there is a service delay. To the north of the station the six lines reduce to four (two slow and two fast) and there is a mile of five-track running to the south before this also reduces back to four.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PG92W3 - Pump clips are badges that are attached to handpumps in pubs to show which cask ales are available. In addition to the name of the beer served through the pump, they may give other details such as the brewer's name and alcoholic strength of the beer and serve as advertising.
Pump clips can be made of various materials. For beers that are brewed regularly by the big breweries, high quality plastic, metal or ceramic pump clips are used. Smaller breweries would use a printed plastic pump clip and for one-off beers laminated paper is used. There are variations on the material used, and the gaudiness or tastefulness of the decoration depending on how much the brewery wants to market their beers at the point of sale. Novelty pump clips have also been made of wood, slate and compact discs. Some even incorporate electronic flashing lights. Older pump clips were made of enamel.
The term pump clip originates from the clip that attaches it to the pump handle. These consist of a two-piece plastic ring which clamps to the handle with two screws. Plastic and laminated paper pump clips usually have a white plastic clip fixed with a sticky double-sided pad that pushes onto the handle.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MGPE0T - TransPennine Express (TPE), legally First TransPennine Express Limited, is a British train operating company owned by FirstGroup that operates the TransPennine Express franchise. It runs regional and inter-city rail services between the major cities and towns of Northern England and Scotland.
The franchise operates almost all its services to and through Manchester covering three main routes. The service provides rail links for major towns and cities such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Sheffield, Hull, Leeds, York, Scarborough, Middlesbrough and Newcastle. TPE run trains 24 hours a day, including through New Year's Eve night. TPE trains run between York, Leeds and Manchester Airport at least every three hours every night of the week. The franchise operates across the West Coast Main Line, Huddersfield Line, East Coast Main Line and part of the Tees Valley line.
TransPennine Express was one of several train operators impacted by the 2022 United Kingdom railway strike, which was the first national rail strike in the UK for three decades. Its workers were amongst those who participated in industrial action due to a dispute over pay and working conditions
On 26/01/2023, the boss of under-fire train company Transpennine Express has apologised to passengers and admitted services have not been good enough.
Transpennine, which operates across the North of England and into Scotland, has been cancelling trains on a daily basis for months, disrupting many journeys.
Calls have been made for the company to lose its contract for the service.
Matthew Golton, managing director of Transpennine, told the BBC the operator had a recovery plan to do better.
The government has previously said action will be taken if the company can't be turned round.
Asked about Transpennine cancelling 40% of its services last week, Mr Golton said: It isn't good enough.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KRXPMF - The British Rail Class 800 Intercity Express Train or Azuma is a type of bi-mode multiple unit train built by Hitachi for Great Western Railway and London North Eastern Railway. The type uses electric motors powered from overhead electric wires for traction, but also has diesel generators to enable trains to operate on unelectrified track. It is a part of the Hitachi AT300 product family.
The Class 800 was produced under the Intercity Express Programme (IEP) as a replacement for the Intercity 125 and Intercity 225 fleets of high speed trains. The trains were manufactured by Hitachi between 2014 and 2018, assembly being performed at the Hitachi Newton Aycliffe facility, alongside the related Class 801, from bodyshells shipped from the Kasado plant in Japan
no body construction takes place in the UK. As well as resembling the Class 801, the units are also very similar to the Class 802 units, which have uprated diesel engines and larger fuel tanks.

The locomotive was built as a standard Jubilee Class in 1934 by the North British Locomotive Company for the London Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS). In May 1961, under the ownership of British Railways, Bahamas was the recipient of several experimental modifications aimed at improving the steam engine. In July 1966, Bahamas was withdrawn from traffic. A preservation society was founded and raised the money to purchase it from British Rail to prevent it from being scrapped. After repairs by the Hunslet Engine Company in Leeds Bahamas was transported to Dinting Railway Museum, near Glossop, Derbyshire.
After British Rail's ban on steam locomotives ended, Bahamas was permitted to run on the national rail network. In October 1972, Bahamas hauled its first excursion special, proving there was public demand. A year later, it was removed from service when its boiler certificate expired. In 1988, it returned to steam after overhaul. It was withdrawn from mainline use after its ticket expired. Between 1997 and 2013, Bahamas alternated between public displays and storage. Another overhaul began during 2013 and the locomotive returned to mainline operations in early 2019

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JWGT7C - The Advanced Passenger Train (APT) was a tilting high speed train developed by British Rail during the 1970s and early 1980s, for use on the West Coast Main Line (WCML). The WCML contained many curves, and the APT pioneered the concept of active tilting to address these, a feature that has since been copied on designs around the world. The experimental APT-E achieved a new British railway speed record on 10 August 1975 when it reached 152.3 miles per hour (245.1 km/h), only to be surpassed by the service prototype APT-P at 162.2 miles per hour (261.0 km/h) in December 1979.
Development of the service prototypes dragged on, and by the late 1970s the design had been under construction for a decade and the trains were still not ready for service. The election of Margaret Thatcher brought matters to a head and she alluded to funding cuts for the project. Facing the possibility of cancellation, BR management decided to put the prototypes into service, with the first runs along the London-Glasgow route taking place in December 1981. The result was a media circus when every problem large or small received front-page coverage and the entire project derided as an example of BR's incompetence. The trains were withdrawn from service again by the end of the month, to the great amusement of the press.
The problems were eventually solved and the trains quietly reintroduced in 1984 with much greater success. By this time the competing High Speed Train, powered by a conventional diesel engine and lacking the APT's tilt and performance, had gone through development and testing at a rapid rate and was now forming the backbone of BR's passenger service. All support for the APT project collapsed as anyone in authority distanced themselves from what was being derided as a failure. Plans for a production version, APT-S, were abandoned, and the three APT-Ps ran for just over a year before being withdrawn again over the winter of 1985/6. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JWGT80 - The British Rail Class 86 is a class of electric locomotives built during the 1960s. Developed as a 'standard' electric locomotive from earlier prototype models, one hundred of these locomotives were built from 1965 to 1966 to haul trains on the then newly electrified West Coast Main Line (WCML) from London Euston to Birmingham, Crewe, Liverpool, Manchester and later Glasgow and Preston. Introduction of the class enabled the replacement of many steam locomotives, which were finally withdrawn by British Rail in 1968.
Under the earlier BR classification system, the type was given the designation AL6 (meaning the sixth design of AC locomotive) and locomotives were numbered E3101E3200. In 1968, this was changed to Class 86 when British Rail introduced the TOPS classification system.
The class was built to haul passenger and freight trains alike on the West Coast Main Line
however, some members of the class also saw use on the Great Eastern Main Line (GEML) between London Liverpool Street and Norwich, after the remainder of the line north of Colchester was electrified in the mid-1980s. The type has had a generally long and successful career, with some members of the class seeing main line service lives in the UK of up to 55 years. Most regular passenger duties of the class came to end on both the WCML and the GEML in the early-to-mid-2000s, after a career of up to 40 years. Some members of the class remained in use for charter work and for freight work with Freightliner until 2021. A number of the class were exported to Bulgaria and Hungary and remain in use. As of 2022, three Class 86s remain preserved in usable condition in the UK
all are in private ownership.
The order for 100 locomotives was placed in 1963
it was split between two manufacturers, with the English Electric Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows building 60 locomotives and British Rail Doncaster Works producing 40. The Doncaster and Newton-built locomotives were not identical

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JX2TW6 - The British Rail Class 43 (HST) is the TOPS classification used for the InterCity 125 High Speed Train (formerly Classes 253 and 254) power cars, built by British Rail Engineering Limited from 1975 to 1982, and in service in the UK since 1976.
The class is officially the fastest diesel locomotive in the world, with an absolute maximum speed of 148.5 mph (239.0 km/h), and a regular service speed of 125 mph (201 km/h). The record run was led by 43102 (43302) and trailed by 43159
In the early 1970s, the British Railways Board made the decision to replace its main-line express diesel traction. Financial limitations were tight, so mass electrification was not possible. As a result, a new generation of high-speed diesel trains had to be developed.
Angel Trains donated 43018 to Crewe Heritage Centre following its use as a spares donor for Abellio ScotRail. Porterbrook also donated 43081, the 8,000th locomotive built at Crewe, to the museum in 2021. Porterbrook donated 43048 and 43089 to the 125 Group. Both moved to the group when their lease ended with East Midlands Railway. The group later purchased 43044 from Porterbrook in 2021, with 43159 being donated in June that year
Porterbrook is a British rolling stock company (ROSCO), created as part of the privatisation of British Rail. Together with Angel Trains and Eversholt Rail Group, it is one of the three original ROSCOs.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JX2TXH - Crewe Heritage Centre is a railway museum located in Crewe, England. Managed by the Crewe Heritage Trust, the museum is located between the railway station and the town centre
the site was the location of the 'Old Works' which was demolished in the early 1980s.
History
The centre was established in the old London, Midland and Scottish Railway yard, which was once part of Crewe Works, between the junction to Chester and the West Coast Main Line. It was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, on 24 July 1987. It was renamed in 1992 as Crewe Railway Age by the owning registered charity but, after the management of the centre was taken over by a new group of volunteers, the museum returned to its original name of Crewe Heritage Centre in early 2008.
Exhibits
The centre has a series of exhibits, ranging from the only surviving APT-P train, miniature railways, three open signal boxes (Crewe Station A, Crewe North Junction and Exeter West) and a varied collection of standard gauge steam, diesel and electric locomotives, as well as occasional visiting locomotives. The Main Exhibition Hall features many artefacts and exhibits associated with Crewe, from its locomotive and carriage construction to its famous junction railway station. Brake Van rides are available to the public during special events.
Advanced Passenger Train
APT No.370 003/006 at Crewe Heritage Centre
Built by British Rail (BR) the 1970s and 1980s, this Class 370 Advanced Passenger Train (APT) is the only surviving APT set. Numbered 370 003/006, it is open at all times with an occasional cafe run from the original buffet car (selected days only). The APT-P museum can be found inside one of the carriages, with photographs on display from the APT project

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JR3MNJ - The British Rail Class 31 diesel locomotives, also known as the Brush Type 2 and previously as Class 30, were built by Brush Traction from 1957-62. They were numbered in two series, D5500-D5699 and D5800-D5862. Construction of the first locomotive was completed in the final week of September 1957, and the handing-over took place on 31 October. The first Class 31 entered service in November 1957, after the launch of the Class 20 locomotive and was one of the Pilot Scheme locomotives ordered by British Railways to replace steam traction.
Engines
They were originally built with Mirrlees JVS12T 1,250 bhp (930 kW) (D5500D5519) and 1,365 bhp (1,018 kW) engines and Brush electrical equipment, but the engines were not successful and in 1964 D5677 was fitted with an English Electric 12SVT engine (similar to the 12CSVT used in the Class 37 but without an intercooler) rated at 1,470 bhp (1,100 kW). The trial proved successful, and between 1965 and 1969 the entire class was re-engined. The de-rated engine was used as it was the maximum the electrical system could accept.
Classification
The Mirrlees-engined locomotives were originally known as Class 30 under TOPS, with re-engined examples joining Class 31. The class was originally intended for service on the Eastern Region, but gradually became common in both the Western and London Midland regions too.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JKC2HB - The Low Line is a new walking destination for London along the length of the mighty Victorian rail viaducts spanning Bankside, London Bridge and Bermondsey. It connects diverse neighbourhoods and communities in south London, linking existing and new hubs of creativity, entertainment, and industry along its course. The Low Line celebrates the heritage of the railway arches which have been a part of the area for over 150 years, shaping places of interest along the way and unlocking their potential.
The first new sections of the Low Line opened at Old Union Yard Arches and Flat Iron Square and complement established Low Line hubs located at Borough Market, Maltby Street Market, and Spa Terminus. These openings have provided enhanced access, connectivity, and public spaces, as well as improved economic prosperity through repurposing underused or empty arches.
The Low Line was coined by Southwark resident David Stephens. The concept has developed through a group of initial partners including Better Bankside, Blue Bermondsey, Borough Market, Team London Bridge, The Arch Company, and Southwark Council, who are steering the initial scoping, planning and communication of the project.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K148YG - The London Fire Brigade (LFB) is the fire and rescue service for London, the capital of the United Kingdom. It was formed by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade Act 1865, under the leadership of superintendent Eyre Massey Shaw. It has 5,992 staff, including 5,096 operational firefighters and officers based at 102 fire stations (plus one river station)
The LFB is led by the Commissioner for Fire and Emergency Planning, a position currently held by Andy Roe
In 2008, existing LFB facilities were deemed unsuitable to meet the demands of modern firefighting and training. The LFB had been training firefighters at its current Grade 2 listed building in Southwark since 1878.
In response, the LFB signed a partnership contract with Babcock International Group PLC to provide firefighter training over the course of 25 years beginning in 2012. Babcock is also the number one training provider to the Royal Navy, which includes firefighter training.
Notable incidents: Grenfell Tower fire 2017, Wembley industrial estate 2017, Camden market fire 2014, Vauxhall helicopter crash 2013, Buncefield oil terminal 2005
In the past two decades the total number of stations has reduced slightly, with the following permanent closures:
2014: Belsize, Bow, Clerkenwell, Downham, Kingsland, Knightsbridge, Silvertown, Southwark, Westminster, and Woolwich.
2005: Manchester Square
1999: Barbican
1998: Heathrow Airport

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTA83 - The Zündapp Bella is a motor scooter manufactured by motorcycle manufacturer Zündapp from 1953 to 1964. Approximately 130,000 Bella scooters were sold, with engine sizes ranging from 150 cc to 200 cc.
The design of the Bella was heavily influenced by that of the Parilla Levriere, also known as the Parilla Greyhound. Along with being similar in general appearance, both designs have prominent air tunnels along the centreline of the scooter to allow fresh air to cool the engine without a fan.
Early Bella with kick starter and telescopic fork
As introduced in 1953, the Bella had a 146 cc two-stroke single cylinder engine, 12 inch wheels, 6 V electrics, a kick starter, and an undamped telescopic fork. The fuel tank was mounted under the seat.
A version of the Bella called the Suburbanette was made for the United States market from 1953 to 1954. The Suburbanette was stripped of the body panels enclosing the engine. 370 Suburbanettes were sold. An export version of the last 150cc Bella, the R154K (K for kickstarter), with higher Western (buckhorn) bars and no dynastarter, came to the United States in the later 1950s.[10]
A 197 cc (12.0 cu in) engine producing 10 hp (7.5 kW) became available in May 1954. The front suspension was later changed from a telescopic fork to an Earles-type leading link fork with a single suspension unit on left side of the fork. Later Bella scooters also had 12 V electricals powered by two 6 V batteries.[citation needed] Electric starters also became available on the Bella.
The Bella was imported into the United Kingdom by Ambassador Motorcycles, and into the United States by International Motorcycle Company.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHBJWR - Hanson Cement is a cement production company located in the United Kingdom. It was called Castle Cement until it was rebranded in 2009. The company is now owned by HeidelbergCement. Hanson Cement has a long history dating back to the early 19th century, when it was founded as the Portland Cement Company.
The company was formed in 1981 through an amalgamation of three firms:
Tunnel Portland Cement Company Ltd (founded 1874) with plants at West Thurrock, Essex (1874), Pitstone, Buckinghamshire (1937) and Padeswood, Flintshire (1949).
Ketton Portland Cement Company Ltd (founded 1929) with a plant at Ketton, Rutland.
Ribblesdale Cement Ltd (founded 1937) with a plant at Clitheroe, Lancashire.
The company was acquired by HeidelbergCement in May 2007.
In 2005, the company's depot in Birmingham was sold and subsequently redeveloped as Curzon Gate.
Environmental concerns
The company admitted to numerous environmental offences over the years leading up to 2009, during a case in which it was fined 250,000 pounds by the Environment Agency Wales (EAW) in February 2010.
Operations
The head office is in Castle Hill at Maidenhead in Berkshire, and the works are located in Ketton in Rutland, Buckley in Flintshire, Clitheroe and Avonmouth near Bristol. The company has a marine terminal at Avonmouth that is used for the importation of cement in bulk, with samples from there tested at the Ketton site's laboratory each week to ensure they meet British Standards. Cement is also imported through the Humber ports.
Hanson Cement holds an open day at the Ketton production facility every year in July.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H19DB9 - The gilded bronze statue of Boulton, Watt and Murdoch (depicting Matthew Boulton, James Watt and William Murdoch) by William Bloye and Raymond Forbes-Kings stands on a plinth of Portland stone, outside the old Register Office on Broad Street in Birmingham, England.
It is known locally as The Golden Boys after its colour, or The Carpet Salesmen after the partially rolled-up plan of a steam engine which they are examining. They were most famous for improving and developing the steam engine.
Sponsored by an £8,000 bequest from Richard Wheatley in 1939, and £7,500 from the City Council, it was unveiled in 1956, from preliminary designs drawn up in 1938.
The statue was restored and re-gilded, and replaced in its old position in September 2006.
It will be moved across the road into Centenary Square by late 2018. The statue was moved into storage on 23 August 2017

84 is the sum of the first seven triangular numbers (making it a tetrahedral number), as well as the sum of a twin prime (41 + 43). Being thrice a perfect number, 84 is itself a semiperfect number. Also, the ISBN Group Identifier for books published in Spain
International direct dial phone calls to Vietnam are prefixed by 84.
Eighty Four is the atomic number of polonium. The murder of Alexander Litvinenko, a Russian dissident, in 2006 was announced as due to Polonium poisoning. According to Prof. Nick Priest of Middlesex University, an environmental toxicologist and radiation expert, speaking on Sky News on December 2, Litvinenko was probably the first person ever to die of the acute α-radiation effects of Polonium.
Its also the shorthand term for the British Army 84mm Carl Gustav recoilless rifle.

The WCML contained many curves, and the APT pioneered the concept of active tilting to address these, a feature that has since been copied on designs around the world. The experimental APT-E achieved a new British railway speed record on 10 August 1975 when it reached 152.3 miles per hour (245.1 km/h), only to be bested by the service prototype APT-P at 162.2 miles per hour (261.0 km/h) in December 1979, a record that stood for 23 years.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGMWGJ - An internal combustion engine (ICE) is a heat engine in which the combustion of a fuel occurs with an oxidizer (usually air) in a combustion chamber that is an integral part of the working fluid flow circuit. In an internal combustion engine, the expansion of the high-temperature and high-pressure gases produced by combustion applies direct force to some component of the engine. The force is applied typically to pistons, turbine blades, rotor or a nozzle. This force moves the component over a distance, transforming chemical energy into useful mechanical energy.
The first commercially successful internal combustion engine was created by Étienne Lenoir around 1859[1] and the first modern internal combustion engine was created in 1876 by Nikolaus Otto (see Otto engine).
The term internal combustion engine usually refers to an engine in which combustion is intermittent, such as the more familiar four-stroke and two-stroke piston engines, along with variants, such as the six-stroke piston engine and the Wankel rotary engine. A second class of internal combustion engines use continuous combustion: gas turbines, jet engines and most rocket engines, each of which are internal combustion engines on the same principle as previously described. Firearms are also a form of internal combustion engine.
In contrast, in external combustion engines, such as steam or Stirling engines, energy is delivered to a working fluid not consisting of, mixed with, or contaminated by combustion products. Working fluids can be air, hot water, pressurized water or even liquid sodium, heated in a boiler. ICEs are usually powered by energy-dense fuels such as gasoline or diesel fuel, liquids derived from fossil fuels. While there are many stationary applications, most ICEs are used in mobile applications and are the dominant power supply for vehicles such as cars, aircraft, and boats.
Typically an ICE is fed with fossil fuels like natural gas or petroleum.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DA6238 - Rear view of a white Trabant 601, commonly known as a Trabi, with an oval DDR sticker, historic-style number plate, tail lights, bumper, rear window and Trabant badge visible on the boot lid. The photograph appears to show the vehicle indoors, probably in a museum, exhibition or classic car display, making it useful for editorial stock photography on East Germany, the German Democratic Republic, Cold War motoring, divided Germany, socialist transport, everyday life under communism, postwar European design, car collecting and twentieth century history. The Trabant was produced by VEB Sachsenring in Zwickau and became one of the most recognisable symbols of the former DDR. The 601 model is especially associated with East German private motoring, with its compact body, two-stroke engine and distinctive styling. The DDR Museum describes the Trabant as a central symbol of everyday life in the GDR, while Berlin tourism material notes the Trabi Museum's focus on the classic P601 and its role in East German culture. The car's later reputation is closely tied to nostalgia, German reunification, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the contrast between western consumer choice and eastern planned-economy production. This rear detail image can illustrate themes such as Ostalgie, communist-era design, Eastern Bloc engineering, car shortages, heritage vehicles, museum interpretation, retro motoring, European travel, political history, German reunification, urban mobility and industrial production in Saxony. The visible DDR sticker gives the photograph a strong documentary link to East German identity, while the rear badges and number plate make it a useful close-up for articles about the Trabant 601, classic cars, Cold War exhibits, historical transport collections and the cultural afterlife of one of Europe's most famous small cars.

August, always a mad busy crazy time in Edinburgh, during the festival and fringe, which seems to have grown even bigger than the tattoo and festival. There's no shortage of talent and thesps here!.
This piece of four star contemporary, drama theatre is performed by 'Dead Posh Productions'. At a café on a railway station, housewife Laura Jesson meets doctor Alec Harvey. Although they are both already married, they gradually fall in love with each other. They continue to meet every Thursday on the small café, although they know that their love is impossible.....
Venue 21, The Roman Eagle Lodge, Johnston terrace, Edinburgh 02/08/2012 - 27/08/2012 except the 12th August.
As the blurb said: 'Join us for afternoon tea, as lovestruck commuters find themselves caught between a rock cake and a hard place. Tempted by something steamy? You will be chuffed if you can make it. Noel Coward's classic'.
Review by Michael Wallace:
'Great to see an almost original version of Brief Encounters. Particularly liked the way the passage of time was indicated. Even the small roles were well-portrayed. The pre-war accents were carried off with great success'.
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (The Fringe) is the world's largest arts festival, with the 2012 event spanning 25 days totalling over 2,695 shows from 47 countries in 279 venues. Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place annually in Scotland's capital, in the month of August. The Fringe is a showcase for the performing arts, particularly theatre and comedy (which has seen substantial growth in recent years), although dance and music are also represented. In 2012, 36% of shows were comedy and 28% theatrical productions. Theatrical productions range from the classics of ancient Greece to William Shakespeare, Samuel Beckett and contemporary works. In 2012, 1,418 shows were having their world première.
The Fringe is an unjuried festival – with no selection committee, and therefore any type of performance may participate. The Fringe has often showcased experimental works that might not be invited to a more conservative arts festival. In addition to ticketed, programmed events, the Festival has included a street fair, located primarily on the Royal Mile. The Festival is organized by the Festival Fringe Society, which publishes the programme, sells tickets, and offers advice to performers. Their offices are on the Royal Mile.

'Steam' is the second single from Peter Gabriel's 1992 album, Us. It reached number 10 on the UK singles chart.
Peter Gabriel has said that the song is about a relationship in which the woman is sophisticated, bright, cultured, and knows everything about anything and that the man knows nothing about anything, except, he does know about the woman, and she doesn't know much about herself.
An alternate version of this song called 'Quiet Steam' was a B-side on the 'Digging in the Dirt' single. It is a very lo-fi take on the popular version that appeared on the album. On Secret World Live, 'Steam' is preceded for a minute or so by the 'Quiet Steam' version.
As you will probably know, Peter Brian Gabriel (born 1950) is a British singer, musician, and songwriter who rose to fame as the lead vocalist and flautist of the 1970's progressive rock group Genesis.
After leaving Genesis in 1975, Gabriel went on to a successful solo career. More recently he has focused on producing and promoting world music and pioneering digital distribution methods for music. He has also been involved in various humanitarian efforts. In 2007 Gabriel was honoured as a BMI Icon at the 57th annual BMI London Awards for his “influence on generations of music makers.”
Gabriel was also awarded the Polar Music Prize in 2009 and inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010.
A Showman's road locomotive or showman's engine is a steam-powered road-going 'locomotive' designed to provide power and transport for a travelling fair or circus. Similar to other road-going traction engines, showman's engines were normally distinguished by the addition of a full-length canopy, a dynamo mounted in front of the chimney, and brightly coloured paintwork with ornate decorations. The dynamo was used to generate electricity to illuminate and power various fairground rides. Although originally the ride's motion was powered by an internal steam engine, some later rides were driven direct from the showman's engine via a belt drive.
The one shown here is the John Murphys proud Peacocks Fowler B6 traction Engine. Seen here at the 2011 Cheshire Steam fair, held at Daresbury near Warrington 9th July 2011.

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
'Mittageisen' is a single by the English band Siouxsie and the Banshees. Originally appearing on the band's 1978 debut album The Scream (an album I played to death when it first came out) as 'Metal Postcard (Mittageisen)', the track was re-recorded in 1979 with this time the lyrics sung in German.
The title 'Mittageisen' is a word play based on the German words 'Mittagessen' (literally: 'noon meal', i.e. Lunch) and Eisen ('iron'). The title was inspired by John Heartfield's photocollage Hurrah, die Butter ist Alle! ('Hurray, the Butter is Finished!'), that was also used as front cover art.
John Heartfield's photocollage was initially used on the frontpage of the 'Arbeiter-Illustrierte-Zeitung / Workers Illustrated Journal', published on 19 December 1935. Heartfield (1891–1968) was an early member of the Club Dada, which started 1916 as Cabaret Voltaire in Zürich. The picture with the title 'Hurrah, die Butter ist Alle! / Hurray, the butter is finished!' shows a family who eats various pieces of metal. The trigger for it was the following quote from Hermann Göring: 'Iron made a nation always strong, butter and lard made only the people fat.'
'Mittageisen' was composed by Banshees members Siouxsie Sioux, John McKay, Kenny Morris and Steven Severin, the lyrics were translated by Dave Woods.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BNKK50 - East Lancashire Railway is a 12.5-mile (20 km) heritage railway line in North West England which runs between Heywood, Greater Manchester and Rawtenstall in Lancashire. There are intermediate stations at Bury Bolton Street, Burrs Country Park, Summerseat and Ramsbottom, with the line crossing the border into Rossendale serving Irwell Vale and Rawtenstall. Before closure, the line terminated at Bacup.
The heritage line is now just over 12 miles (19 km) long and has a mainline connection with the national railway network at Castleton, just beyond Heywood. The ELR is planning to extend the running line to Castleton in the future.
Overview
Passenger services between Bury and Rawtenstall were withdrawn by British Rail on 3 June 1972. Coal services to Rawtenstall ended in 1980 and formal closure of the line followed in 1982. The East Lancashire Railway Trust reopened the line on 25 July 1987. The initial service operated between Bury and Ramsbottom, via Summerseat. In 1991, the service was extended northwards from Ramsbottom to reach Rawtenstall, via Irwell Vale. However, two original stations on the line, closed to passengers by BR in 1972, have not reopened, Ewood Bridge & Edenfield and Stubbins. The latter was the junction of the lines to Accrington and Rossendale although there were no platforms serving these lines.
The Day out with Thomas events made a return to the railway after a two-year absence, following fresh negotiations, having previously been unable to reach an agreement in 2009 with HIT Entertainment, the owners of the Thomas brand

Porcupine Tree are a prog (progressive) rock band formed by Steven Wilson in 1987 in Hemel Hempstead, UK. A big fan of Tangerine Dream, Neu! and Can, Steven's style has moved more in recent years to heavy metal. From the 'In Absentia' album, when the band started to work with Danish photographer and filmmaker Lasse Hoile. This involvement created a distinctive image for the band and is part of the Tree's live experience.
In 2007 the band was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Surround Sound Album with their album 'Fear of a Blank Planet' and then again in 2010 with 'The Incident'. Steven Wilson has also been involved with No-Man and Blackfield. Both of whuch are worth checking out too.

Hornby Railways is the leading brand of model railway in the United Kingdom. Its roots date back to 1901, when founder Frank Hornby received a patent for his Meccano construction toy. The first clockwork train was produced in 1920. In 1938, Hornby launched its first 00 gauge train. In 1964, Hornby and Meccano were bought by their competitor Tri-Ang, and sold on when Tri-ang went into receivership. In the 1980s Hornby Railways became independent.
Like most kids I had one when I was young.
Hornby was at first a tradename for the railway productions of Meccano Ltd and based in Liverpool, which released its first train, a clockwork 0 gauge (1:48) model, in 1920. An electric train soon followed but was under-designed and the few that were made were sold out in France. In 1925, a much more successful electric model was introduced , operating on high voltage (220-240V ouch!) AC power. Safety concerns saw low voltage 4V and then 6V motors introduced, followed by a reliable 20V AC system, which was developed in the early 1930s. However, clockwork remained the mainstay of the Hornby 0 gauge trains until 1937 and became the only power available in Liverpool-made 0 gauge trains from 1949.
All Hornby train sets come with a TrakMat - a scenic underlay sheet which you can use as a base for your layout at any stage in its development. A TrakMat also tells you where to put the track, buildings and other accessories to complete the full TrakMat layout. So its still childs play. Grass, hedges, vegetation and gravel is easily added as is lighting for homes, shops, stations and pub models. Dont forget a railway cottage and trackside fencing to finish off!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF23KC - An engine order telegraph or E.O.T., often also called a Chadburn, is a communications device used on a ship (or submarine) for the pilot on the bridge to order engineers in the engine room to power the vessel at a certain desired speed. In early vessels, from the 1800s until about 1950, the device usually consisted of a round dial about nine inches in diameter with a knob at the center attached to one or more handles, and an indicator pointer on the face of the dial. Modern E.O.T.s on vessels which still use them use electronic light and sound signals.
Traditional E.O.T.s required a pilot wanting to change speed to ring the telegraph on the bridge, moving the handle to a different position on the dial. This would ring a bell in the engine room and move their pointer to the position on the dial selected by the bridge. The engineers hear the bell and move their handle to the same position to signal their acknowledgment of the order, and adjust the engine speed accordingly. Such an order is called a bell, for example the order for a ship's maximum speed, flank speed, is called a flank bell.
For urgent orders requiring rapid acceleration, the handle is moved three times so that the engine room bell is rung three times. This is called a cavitate bell because the rapid acceleration of the ship's propeller will cause the water around it to cavitate, causing a lot of noise and wear on the propellers. Such noise is undesirable during conflicts because it can give away a vessel's position.
On most modern vessels the EOT acts as a direct throttle with no intervening engine room personnel.
This one has positions of Full Ahead, Half, Slow, Dead Slow, Stand By, Stop. Astern Finished with engines, dead slow, slow, half and full. German U-boats of World War II contained the dial position Alarmtauchen, the order for a crash dive.
Most seen these days are copies. Most do not include the CL of Chadburn Liverpool which was the place of manufacture, as in this specimen h

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AA0RPF - Crewe Works is a British railway engineering facility built in 1840 by the Grand Junction Railway. It is located in the town of Crewe, in Cheshire. It is currently owned by Bombardier Transportation.
The railway also built 200 cottages establishing a new community in what had been the rural township of Monks Coppenhall. Among the first workers to arrive were those from the old works at Edge Hill producing an increase in the town's population by some 800 men, women and children.
In 1845 the Liverpool and Manchester Railway was merged with the Grand Junction. These, in turn, merged in 1846, with the London and Birmingham Railway and the Manchester and Birmingham Railway to form the London and North Western Railway (LNWR). All four had their own workshops but, in time, locomotive building was concentrated at Crewe.
In 1857 John Ramsbottom became Locomotive Superintendent. He had previously invented the first reliable safety valve and the scoop for picking up water from troughs between the tracks. He went on to improve the precision and interchangeability of tools and components.
In 1862 locomotive work was transferred from Wolverton. Wolverton became the carriage works, while wagon building was concentrated at Earlestown.
In 1853 Crewe had begun to make its own wrought iron and roll its own rails, and in 1864 installed a Bessemer converter for manufacturing steel. In 1868 it became the first place to use open-hearth furnaces on an industrial scale. It also built its own brickworks. Later the works was fitted with two electric arc furnaces.
Production increased steadily and, with the sale to the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway of ten 2-4-0 and eighty six 0-6-0 locomotives, privately owned manufacturers took out an injunction in 1876 to restrain the railway from producing anything but its own needs. This remained in force until British Rail Engineering Limited was established in 1969.
