Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM97HX - A tight, documentary close-up of a blue civic plaque mounted on a red brick wall at Stockport railway station in Greater Manchester. The plaque headline reads CHANNEL ISLAND EVACUEES and the main inscription is fully legible, explaining that in June, July and August 1940 Stockport welcomed over 1200 evacuees from the Channel Islands, and that the children were cared for by local families until the islands were liberated in May 1945. Around the lower edge, the wording THE METROPOLITAN BOROUGH OF STOCKPORT and a small municipal crest reinforce the official, local-government nature of the marker, giving the image strong value for accurate editorial captioning and search visibility.
The composition is simple and direct, designed to prioritise the readable text and the classic blue-plaque format. The brickwork texture and the slightly weathered surface add a sense of permanence and everyday realism, suggesting a plaque that has become part of the station environment rather than a staged memorial. Light appears cool and natural, consistent with winter or cold-season conditions, with no strong shadows, so the plaque reads clearly and evenly.
As a stock image, it works well for editorial uses around World War II remembrance, wartime evacuation, refugees and displacement, and the social history of communities taking in children and families during conflict. It is also useful for education, heritage, and local history storytelling, especially where an image is needed to represent Channel Islands evacuation history in mainland Britain. The station setting is significant, since rail travel was central to evacuation journeys and arrivals, and the plaque serves as a quiet reminder of how major wartime events intersected with ordinary civic places

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6C1 - A street-level view of The Football University Programme building adjacent to Bury Market in Bury town centre, photographed at Bury BL9 0SW, Greater Manchester. The scene shows members of the public moving through the pedestrianised market area, with seating, shoppers and everyday activity visible in the foreground.
The Football University Programme is an educational initiative that uses football and sport as engagement tools to support learning, personal development and aspiration, particularly among young people who may be disengaged from traditional education routes. Its location close to Bury Market places it within a busy civic environment, reinforcing links between education, community life and town-centre regeneration.
Bury Market has long been a focal point of the town's economic and social activity, and recent regeneration efforts have sought to broaden its role beyond retail, incorporating leisure, education and community uses. Projects such as the Football University Programme are often cited in policy and media discussions as examples of place-based regeneration, where social infrastructure is embedded directly into everyday urban settings.
The image captures a cross-section of daily life in a northern English town centre, illustrating how education initiatives coexist with markets, caf??s and public seating. Photographed in daylight with people of different ages visible, the scene offers strong editorial value for themes including community regeneration, education and sport, social inclusion, town-centre renewal and contemporary life in Greater Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6CX - The exterior of The McManus: Dundee's Art Gallery & Museum, photographed on Albert Square in Dundee city centre, Dundee DD1 1DA. The imposing building, constructed in the Victorian Gothic Revival style, features symmetrical stone fa??ades, arched windows, decorative staircases and a central spire, reflecting the civic ambition of nineteenth-century Dundee.
Originally opened in 1867 as a memorial to Prince Albert, the building later became the city's principal museum and art gallery. Today, The McManus houses collections covering fine art, local and national history, archaeology, natural history and decorative arts, making it a key cultural and educational institution in eastern Scotland.
The museum's prominent position facing Albert Square places it at the heart of Dundee's civic life, surrounded by historic buildings, green spaces and pedestrian routes. Its architecture was designed not only to impress but to communicate the importance of public learning, philanthropy and cultural enrichment during a period when Dundee was a rapidly expanding industrial city.
The McManus continues to play a central role in Dundee's cultural identity, linking the city's industrial past with contemporary artistic and historical interpretation. Photographed in daylight under a bright sky, the image highlights the building's architectural detail and formal symmetry, offering strong editorial value for themes including Scottish heritage, museums and education, civic architecture, cultural tourism and the role of public institutions in urban identity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6E7 - A decorative street sign for Bash Street, photographed in Dundee city centre at DD1 1LQ, mounted on a traditional stone wall and illustrated with cartoon figures referencing characters from The Beano, one of Britain's longest-running and most influential children's comics. The sign uses playful artwork and dialogue-style illustrations that directly evoke the comic strip The Bash Street Kids, first published in 1954.
Dundee holds a unique place in British publishing history as the long-time home of DC Thomson, the company behind The Beano, The Dandy and numerous other magazines that shaped generations of British childhood reading. Characters such as the Bash Street Kids, Dennis the Menace, Minnie the Minx and others became cultural touchstones, blending humour, mild anarchy and social satire in a style closely associated with post-war British popular culture.
The naming of Bash Street and the inclusion of comic-style signage reflect Dundee's conscious celebration of its comics and creative-industries heritage, embedding publishing history directly into the city's physical environment. Rather than a conventional street nameplate, the sign functions as a form of informal public art, combining wayfinding with storytelling and nostalgia.
Photographed in daylight with the textured stone background clearly visible, the image highlights the contrast between historic urban fabric and playful illustrated design. It offers strong editorial value for themes including British comics history, cultural memory, publishing heritage, humour in public space, and Dundee's role in the UK's creative economy, making it suitable for use in books, magazines, educational resources and cultural features.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAWWK - The Jeanie Johnston, a full-scale replica of a nineteenth-century emigrant ship, is moored on the north bank of the River Liffey in Dublin. The vessel commemorates the original Jeanie Johnston, which made multiple transatlantic voyages during the Irish Great Famine, carrying thousands of emigrants from Ireland to North America without loss of life.
With its tall masts, rigging and traditional wooden hull, the ship forms a striking feature of the Dublin Docklands waterfront, contrasting historic maritime design with the modern office and residential developments of the IFSC and surrounding quays. The replica operates as a floating museum and educational attraction, offering insight into Ireland's history of emigration and the experiences of famine-era passengers.
Situated along one of Dublin's busiest riverside routes, the Jeanie Johnston has become a recognised landmark and symbol of Irish resilience, memory and diaspora, frequently used to illustrate themes of migration, heritage, maritime history and national identity in Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWMEN5 - The Durham University Library is the centrally administered library of Durham University in England and is part of the university's Library and Collections department. It was founded in January 1833 at Palace Green by a 160 volume donation by the then Bishop of Durham, William Van Mildert, and now holds over 1.6 million printed items. Since 1937, the university library has incorporated the historic Cosin's Library, founded by Bishop Cosin in 1669. Cosin's Library and the Sudan Archive held at Palace Green Library are designated collections under Arts Council England's Designation Scheme for collections of national and international significance
two collections at Durham University Oriental Museum
Cosin's Library was established in 1669 by Bishop John Cosin. The building was built in 1667?69 by the Quaker architect John Langstaffe specifically to house Cosin's collection of over 5,000 books.
Expansion on Palace Green
The university library initially used the new gallery installed in Cosin's Library. However, after it received Martin Routh's library in 1855 this space proved insufficient and it expanded into the upper floor of the Exchequer Building next door. Additional donations came from Bishop Edward Maltby in 1856 and Thomas Masterman Winterbottom in 1859.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFEPY3 - The statue of Betty Campbell in Central Square, Cardiff, commemorates a pioneering Welsh educator, community leader and campaigner for equality in education. Born in Cardiff in 1934 to Jamaican parents, Betty Campbell grew up in the city at a time when Black communities in Wales were small, often marginalised, and largely absent from public narratives. She trained as a teacher and in 1974 became Wales's first Black headteacher, taking charge of Mount Stuart Primary School in Cardiff Bay, an area then facing economic decline and significant social change.
Campbell was a strong advocate for multicultural education long before it became embedded in national policy. She worked to ensure that Black history, cultural awareness and anti-racist education were included in the school curriculum, believing that children of all backgrounds should see themselves reflected in what they were taught. Beyond the classroom, she played an influential role in local and national initiatives, contributing to the development of Black History Month in Wales and advising on equality and community cohesion. Her work helped challenge institutional racism within education and broadened understanding of Welsh identity as diverse and multi-ethnic.
Unveiled in 2021, the bronze sculpture depicts Campbell rising from a tree-like form, with children gathered at the base, symbolising growth, learning and the lasting impact of education across generations. Situated in Cardiff's redeveloped Central Square, the statue represents a deliberate effort to recognise previously overlooked figures in Welsh public life. Photographed in natural daylight, the image documents contemporary civic memorialisation in Wales, illustrating themes of education, representation, social progress and the evolving understanding of national history.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP37P - A yellow Education Authority (EA) school bus operating in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, photographed from the rear while in service. The vehicle is part of the publicly funded school transport network provided by the Education Authority, which is responsible for transporting thousands of pupils to and from schools each day across Northern Ireland.
School transport plays a particularly important role in Northern Ireland due to a mix of rural geography, school choice, and cross-community travel patterns. EA-operated and contracted buses provide safe, regulated transport for primary and secondary school pupils, forming a routine but essential part of the education system.
Photographed in daylight during normal operation, the image documents everyday public-sector infrastructure and is suitable for editorial use relating to education, government services, child transport safety, and life in Northern Ireland. The Education Authority (EA) school transport policy in Northern Ireland is designed to ensure eligible pupils can access education safely and consistently, particularly given the region's mix of rural communities, school choice, and selective and faith-based education patterns. EA has a statutory duty to provide transport for pupils who meet eligibility criteria, primarily based on age and distance from their nearest suitable school, with additional considerations for special educational needs and disabilities. Transport is delivered through a combination of EA-operated vehicles and contracted private operators, with a strong emphasis on safety standards, safeguarding, and cost control. In recent years the policy has also been shaped by financial pressures, rising fuel and contractor costs, and increasing demand, leading to ongoing reviews of eligibility thresholds, route planning, and efficiency, while remaining a politically and socially sensitive area due to the essential role school transport plays for families across Northern Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59WPC - This conceptual image shows the phrase No Excuses formed using Scrabble-style letter tiles, arranged on top of a printed dictionary page. The contrasting textures of the smooth, cream-coloured tiles and the densely printed text beneath create a visually strong metaphor linking language, meaning, and intent.
The phrase No Excuses is widely used in business, education, sport, and personal development to convey accountability, determination, and a results-focused mindset. Placing the words on a dictionary definition reinforces the idea of clarity and precision, suggesting that excuses are being rejected in favour of clear understanding, responsibility, and action.
The image is tightly framed, drawing attention to the words themselves rather than any wider environment. The neutral tones of the background text contrast with the bold legibility of the tiles, making the message immediately readable and conceptually strong. The lighting appears controlled and even, with no strong shadows, supporting its use as a clean, versatile conceptual photograph.
Images like this are commonly used in editorial and commercial contexts to illustrate themes of motivation, leadership, productivity, discipline, education, and professional mindset. It is particularly suited to articles, presentations, training materials, and marketing content focused on performance, accountability, and goal achievement.

The sign is mounted on a red brick wall and clearly displays the Kumon brand, subjects offered, and local contact telephone number.

The presence of both maths and English subjects highlights the programme's focus on core academic skills such as numeracy, literacy, and confidence in learning.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited to editorial use covering private education, tutoring services, children's learning, education branding, community study centres, and the role of supplementary education in the UK schooling system.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJW6W9 - Liverpool English (Scouse)
Introduction
The term scouse refers to Liverpool English. An inhabitant of Liverpool is a Liverpudlian or Scouse(r) The Scouse accent is well-know throughout Britain and the world mainly due to the Beatles and other Liverool pop groups and singers from the 60s. Nowadays, among some people it not considered to be among the nicest of English accents. Only the Birmingham accent is considered uglier. Scouse has a velarized or adenoidal quality that gives it a sound peculiar to this accent. Of course, for the people of Liverpool, Scouse is an integral part of their identity and well loved.
Vowels
Liverpool is a Northern accent and therefore the FOOT and STRUT words are both pronounced with a /??/. One of the most distinguishable characteristics of Liverpool English is the SQUARE diphthong . Compare Liverpool /??/ with RP /e?/. You can hear it when George Harrison pronounces the word declare in the song Taxman on the Revolver album. Words like book and cook are pronounced [bu?k, ku?k] instead of the RP /b??k, k??k/.
Consonants
Sometimes initial /?/ is pronounced as a [d?] just like in some varieties of American English. Words like ring and bring are pronounced /?g/, that is, with a final /g/ sound. Some stops are pronounced like affricates. For example, dad /dzad/, king /kx?g/. The /t/ in certain lexical items with a short preceding vowel such as matter, what, but, get may be realized as [?]. Examples: Get a job! [ge??d???b], what's the matter [w?ts??m????], what a day [w???dei]. This is generally limited to certain lexical items

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KAHRW4 - Betty Campbell MBE (6 November 1934 ? 13 October 2017,born Rachel Elizabeth Johnson) was a Welsh community activist, who was Wales' first black head teacher. Born into a poor household in Butetown, she won a scholarship to the Lady Margaret High School for Girls in Cardiff. Campbell later trained as a teacher, eventually becoming head teacher of Mount Stuart Primary School in Butetown, Cardiff. She put into practice innovative ideas on the education of children and was actively involved in the community.
Betty Johnson became pregnant at the age of 17, while she was doing her A-levels. She left school when she married Rupert Campbell, a fitter's mate, in 1953. Betty Campbell had four children, one of whom had special needs. She had 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
In 1960, when Campbell already had three children, she discovered that Cardiff Teacher Training College had started to enrol female students. Campbell applied, and was one of only six female students to be admitted.
Campbell's first teaching post was in Llanrumney. She soon returned to Butetown, getting a job at Mount Stuart Primary School, where she taught for 28 years. As a black teacher she experienced hostility from some parents: They hadn't seen a black teacher before. It was as if you could do a job, but if you're black you weren't quite as good.
Campbell was inspired by a trip to the US where she learned about anti-slavery activists like Harriet Tubman and the civil rights movement. When she became Wales' first black head teacher at Mount Stuart in the 1970s, she began teaching children about slavery, black history and the system of apartheid which operated at the time in South Africa.
Speaking later in the Senedd, Campbell explained: I was determined that I was going to become one of those people and enhance the black spirit, black culture as much as I could. Campbell helped to create Black History Month and taught a series of workshops on the role of Butetown's citizens

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK6NJ - Peter Cooper (February 12, 1791 ? April 4, 1883) was an American industrialist, inventor, philanthropist, and politician. He designed and built the first American steam locomotive, the Tom Thumb, founded the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, served as its first president, and stood for election as the Greenback Party's candidate in the 1876 presidential election.
Cooper began tinkering at a young age while working in various positions in New York City. He purchased a glue factory in 1821 and used that factory's profits to found the Canton Iron Works, where he earned even larger profits by assembling the Tom Thumb. Cooper's success as a businessman and inventor continued over the ensuing decades, and he became the first mill operator to successfully use anthracite coal to puddle iron. He also developed numerous patents for products such as gelatin and participated in the laying of the first transatlantic telegraph cable.
During the Gilded Age, Cooper became an ardent critic of the gold standard and the debt-based monetary system of bank currency, advocating instead for government-issued banknotes. Cooper was nominated for president at the 1876 Greenback National Convention, and the Greenback ticket of Cooper and Samuel Fenton Cary won just under one percent of the popular vote in the 1876 general election. His son Edward and his son-in-law Abram Hewitt, both served as Mayor of New York City.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H4HKRM - The former site of Grappenhall Hall School could be developed into a boutique hotel or new homes if the land goes up for sale later this year.
Residents are being asked what they think the old school grounds should be used for as part of a consultation by Warrington Borough Council.
The school for pupils with special educational needs moved from its site on Church Lane to Green Lane in Padgate in September 2015.
Since then, the council has asked the Department of Education for permission to dispose of the land, either by selling it or developing it for another use.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GMAACD - Robert Gordon's College is a private co-educational day school in the heart of Aberdeen, Scotland. The school caters for pupils from Nursery through to S6.
It originally opened in 1750 as the result of a bequest by Robert Gordon, an Aberdeen merchant who made his fortune from trading with Baltic ports, and was known at foundation as Robert Gordon's Hospital. This was 19 years after Gordon had died and left his estate in a 'Deed of Mortification' to fund the foundation of the Hospital. The fine William Adam-designed building was in fact completed in 1732, but lay empty until 1745 until Gordon's foundation had sufficient funds to complete the interior. During the Jacobite rising, in 1746 the buildings were commandeered by Hanoverian troops and named Fort Cumberland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GMABPT - Marischal College is a large granite building on Broad Street in the centre of Aberdeen in north-east Scotland, and since 2011 has acted as the headquarters of Aberdeen City Council. However, the building was constructed for and is on long-term lease from the University of Aberdeen, which still uses parts of the building to house a museum and for ceremonial events.
Today, it provides corporate office space and public access to council services, adjacent to the Town House, the city's historic seat of local government. Many Aberdonians consider Marischal College to be an icon of the Granite City and to symbolise the zenith of Aberdeen's granite-working industry.

Lanyon took as his source the medieval great halls of
England and the Oxbridge colleges, following the strict precedents of
the raised dais, oriel window, fireplace for the top table, and a
screened passage at the opposite end. These plans fell victim to the
original budget cuts
Lanyon's planned gallery was never built and
the panelling remained modest, the latter not helped by later
redecorations. All of this changed in 2000 with the restoration of the
Great Hall by Consarc Conservation, architects. The floor and dais
were replaced and the oriel window unblocked. New pitch pine
panelling and a screened passage with a gallery above, the
replacement of the missing end trusses, and the comprehensive
redecoration and installation of a new lighting system, have all
combined to create a warm, powerful and theatrical space at the
heart of the University. More recently, the restored organ from
Christchurch (where Sir Charles and Lady Lanyon used to worship)

The university forms the focal point of the Queen's Quarter area of the city, one of Belfast's four cultural districts. It offers academic degrees at various levels and across a broad subject range, with over 300 degree programmes available. Since 1 March 2014, Patrick Johnston has been the university's 12th President and Vice-Chancellor. Its Chancellor is Thomas Moran.
Queen's is a member of the Russell Group of leading research intensive universities, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the European University Association, Universities Ireland and Universities UK. The university is associated with two Nobel laureates and one Turing Award laureate.
More recently, the restored organ from
Christchurch (where Sir Charles and Lady Lanyon used to worship)
has been installed in the gallery.

Gives herself to teacher although he doesn't know

*** By Request ***
This is a track from 'No more heroes' the second Stranglers album. It was produced by Martin Rushent, and released in 1977. The classic cover featured a photo of a wreath placed on a coffin with the tails of several rats (the Stranglers' 'trademark'). It was one of the first albums I bought, after many plugs on the John Peel show.
They are said to be the longest-surviving and most 'continuously successful' band to have originated in the UK punk scene of the mid to late 1970s. Beginning life as the Guildford Stranglers on the 11th September 1974 with pub rock origins.
The Stranglers' early sound was driven by Jean-Jacques Burnel's melodic bass, but also gave prominence to Dave Greenfield's keyboards at a time when the instrument was seen as unfashionable. Their early music was also characterised by the growling vocals and sometimes misanthropic lyrics of both Jean-Jacques Burnel and Hugh Cornwell.
To hear more (for my money), checkout any or all of the first 3 albums: Rattus Norvegicus (1977), No More Heroes (1977) &
Black and White (1978 - I still have a promo grey/white vinyl version in my loft). Do tell 'em I sent you...

Trinity College, Dublin (TCD
Irish: Coláiste na Tríonóide, Baile Átha Cliath), formally known as the College of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Queen Elizabeth near Dublin, was founded in 1592 by letters patent from Queen Elizabeth I as the 'mother of a university', and is the only constituent college of the University of Dublin. Located in Dublin, Ireland, it is Ireland's oldest university.
Trinity was set up in part to consolidate the rule of the Tudor monarchy in Ireland, and it was seen as the university of the Protestant Ascendancy for much of its history
although Roman Catholics and Dissenters had been permitted to enter as early as 1793, certain restrictions on their membership of the college remained until 1873 (professorships, fellowships and scholarships were reserved for Protestants) , and the Catholic Church in Ireland forbade its adherents, without permission from their bishop, from attending until 1970. Women were first admitted to the college as full members in 1904.
Its a cool place, make time in your busy life to spend an afternoon there.
This is the place to see the Book Of Kells or just to enjoy the green on a sunny afternoon. My thanks to MOB (you know who you are) for the suggested Dublin tour. I met some old friends and old ghosts during my afternoon.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4863609745 - 'The King Of The Rumbling Spires - 'Marc Bolan &
T-Rex' - Play this track here.
¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
Today a track from a band who were critically examined by few, and are unfortunately remembered for their glam rock and 'Marc' teenpop TV shows period. I hope this track will urge you to look a bit deeper into them or dig out that old black 7 or 12 inch player.
T. Rex were an English rock band fronted by guitarist, singer and songwriter Marc Bolan. Formed as Tyrannosaurus Rex in 1960s London, the folk rock group's debut album 'My People Were Fair and Had Sky in Their Hair... But Now They're Content to Wear Stars on Their Brows' in 1968 reached number 15 in the UK.
In the 1970s, they achieved mainstream success as a glam rock band with the hits 'Get It On', 'Ride a White Swan', '20th Century Boy', 'Children of the Revolution', 'Hot Love', 'Telegram Sam' and 'Metal Guru'. After waning commercial success in the mid-70s, T. Rex ended in 1977 after Bolan was killed at the wheel of his Mini in a car accident.
'King of the Rumbling Spires' in 1970 was the beginning of the transition to a full electric rock/pop band rather than the folky origins of the band. The early 1970's brought a clutch of hits, many covered by Bauhaus and others
Ride a White Swan, Hot Love, Get It On.
EMI even gave Bolan his own record label in the UK—T. Rex Records, the 'T. Rex Wax Co.'. However by 1973 its said that success, money, cocaine, and brandy had become the downfall of the band, with a number of members leaving.
In the summer of 1976 a resurgence started. T. Rex released two more singles, 'I Love to Boogie' (which charted at number 13) and 'Laser Love', which made number 42. In early 1977 Dandy in the Underworld was released to critical acclaim.
Bolan had slimmed down and regained his elfin looks, and the songs too had a stripped-down, streamlined sound. A spring UK tour with punk band The Damned on support garnered positive reviews. As Bolan was enjoying a new surge in popularity, he talked about performing again with old band members, as well as reuniting with legendary producer Tony Visconti.
It was not to be however. Marc Bolan and his girlfriend Gloria Jones spent the evening of 15th September 1977 drinking at the Speakeasy and then dining at Morton's club on Berkeley Square, in Mayfair central London. While driving home early the morning of 16 September, Jones crashed Bolan's purple Mini 1275GT into a tree (now the site of Bolan's Rock Shrine), at Barnes Bridge, Barnes, South West London.
This was less than a mile from his home at 142 Upper Richmond Road West in East Sheen. While Jones was severely injured, Bolan was killed in the crash, two weeks before his 30th birthday. Taken from us, who knows what could have been...

King's College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge, England. Founded in 1441 by Henry VI, the college's formal name is 'The King's College of Our Lady and St. Nicholas in Cambridge'. It is usually referred to simply as 'King's' within the university.
Originally, the college was to be specifically for boys from Eton College. It was not until 1865 that the first non-Etonian undergraduates arrived to study at King's, and the first fellow to have not attended Eton was elected in 1873. The connection with Eton is now weak, but a scholarship to attend the college, exclusively available to students from Eton, is still awarded each year.
The Gatehouse, was built in the neo-Gothic style and adorned with a clock. The chapel is the most impressive in the city.
Famous Alumni include J.G.Ballard, Stephen Poliakoff, Salman Rushdie, John Maynard Keynes and Alan Turing.

For example, Linus Pauling had no difficulty in procuring potassium cyanide at the age of eleven. However, due to increasing concerns about terrorism, drugs and safety, suppliers became increasingly reluctant to sell to amateurs, and chemistry sets were steadily toned down.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F0G6W3 - In Western culture, the finger, or the middle finger (as in giving someone the (middle) finger, the bird or flipping someone off) is an obscene hand gesture. The gesture communicates moderate to extreme contempt, and is roughly equivalent in meaning to fuck me, fuck you, shove it up your ass/arse, up yours or go fuck yourself. It is performed by showing the back of a hand that has only the middle finger extended upwards, though in some locales, the thumb is extended. Extending the finger is considered a symbol of contempt in several cultures, especially in the Western world. Many cultures use similar gestures to display their disrespect, although others use it to express pointing without intentional disrespect. The gesture is usually used to express contempt but can also be used humorously or playfully.
The gesture dates back to ancient Greece and it was also used in ancient Rome. Historically, it represented the phallus. In the early 1800s, it gained increasing recognition as a sign of disrespect and was used by music artists (notably more common among actors, celebrities, athletes and politicians
most still view the gesture as obscene). The index finger and ring finger besides the middle finger in more contemporary periods has been likened to represent the testes.
In July 2022 UK Tory MP,Andrea Jenkyns for Morley and Outwood, who gave protesters the middle finger made parliamentary under-secretary of state minister at the Department for Education.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXW9T - A wide view of the Old College buildings at the University of Edinburgh, photographed within the formal courtyard on South College Street in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town. The neoclassical sandstone architecture, arranged around a rectangular lawn, is dominated by the central domed structure and symmetrical wings that frame the space. Stone balustrades, paved walkways and a traditional lamppost add depth and perspective, reinforcing the ordered and ceremonial nature of the historic university setting.
Old College is one of the most recognisable academic buildings in Scotland and has been central to the University of Edinburgh's identity since the eighteenth century. The architecture reflects Enlightenment ideals of reason, balance and civic purpose, qualities closely associated with Edinburgh's historical reputation as a centre of learning and intellectual life. The courtyard layout creates a sense of calm and enclosure, separating scholarly activity from the surrounding streets of the Old Town.
The image captures the continuity between past and present within a working university environment. While the buildings are steeped in history, they remain an active part of modern academic life, housing teaching spaces, offices and cultural venues. The absence of crowds allows the architectural form and materials to take visual precedence, emphasising the scale, craftsmanship and permanence of the institution.
This photograph is well suited for editorial use covering higher education, university life, historic architecture, Scottish culture and heritage, as well as commercial applications relating to education marketing, cultural tourism, academic publications and representations of European universities within historic urban settings.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF8BK4 - A moody dusk scene within the historic Old College of the University of Edinburgh, showing the neoclassical stone buildings surrounding the central courtyard at South College Street and South Bridge in Edinburgh's Old Town. The imposing architecture, constructed in pale sandstone and crowned by a domed central structure, is set beneath heavy, textured cloud cover that deepens the sense of atmosphere and academic gravitas. The soft, fading light accentuates the worn surfaces, arches and balustrades, revealing centuries of use and civic presence.
In the foreground, a solitary figure stands within the courtyard, adding scale and a quiet human narrative to the monumental surroundings. Ornate iron street lighting and stone steps frame the approach to the buildings, reinforcing the formal layout typical of major eighteenth and nineteenth-century university architecture. The Talbot Rice Gallery, housed within Old College, forms part of this complex, linking contemporary art and culture with one of Scotland's most significant educational institutions.
Old College has long symbolised Edinburgh's role as a centre of learning, philosophy and intellectual life, closely associated with the Scottish Enlightenment and the city's reputation as the Athens of the North. The restrained colour palette, subdued lighting and dramatic sky combine to create an image that feels contemplative and slightly austere, reflecting the seriousness traditionally associated with academia and civic authority.
This image is well suited for editorial use covering higher education, university life, architecture, Scottish history, culture and urban heritage, as well as commercial applications requiring atmospheric imagery of historic institutions, European universities and moody city environments.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEMX32 - An extreme macro close-up of a fountain pen nib resting on a richly textured wooden surface, photographed at high magnification to reveal the fine engraving, polished metal finish and precise geometry of the nib. The image captures the reflective gold-toned collar and dark metal tip in sharp detail, with a tiny bead of ink visible at the point, emphasising the moment just before writing begins. The shallow depth of field and intense surface detail suggest the use of microscope or specialist macro photography techniques.
Fountain pens have long been associated with traditional letter writing, calligraphy and formal correspondence, symbolising a slower, more deliberate form of communication compared to digital text. The engraved patterns on the nib reflect skilled manufacturing and craftsmanship, while the wooden background adds warmth and tactility, reinforcing themes of material culture and hands-on creativity. The close perspective invites the viewer to consider the physical act of writing, from pressure and movement to the flow of ink onto paper.
The image evokes nostalgia for handwritten letters, journals and personal correspondence, as well as the continued appeal of analogue tools in a digital age. Fountain pens remain popular among writers, artists and enthusiasts who value the sensory experience of handwriting and the individuality it conveys. The combination of metal, wood and ink creates a timeless visual language associated with authorship, education and creative practice.
This photograph is well suited for editorial use covering writing, literature, education, communication and cultural heritage, as well as commercial applications relating to stationery, publishing, creative branding, mindfulness themes and promotional material focused on craftsmanship, tradition and the enduring appeal of handwritten expression.
