Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2REGJ6M - The exterior of Cloisters Bar, a long-established independent public house located on Brougham Street in Edinburgh's West End. The pub occupies a substantial stone building and is easily recognised by its red-painted windows and traditional hanging flower baskets, photographed here in the early evening with customers visible inside.
Cloisters has been independently owned and run for decades, most notably under the long stewardship of Alastair and Mary Russell, who developed its reputation as one of Edinburgh's leading real-ale pubs from the late 20th century onwards. Unlike tied houses operated by large pub companies, Cloisters has remained free of brewery ownership, allowing it to curate a changing and carefully selected range of beers.
The pub is particularly well known for its extensive offering of cask ales and craft beers from across Scotland, alongside guest ales from English and wider UK microbreweries. This emphasis on variety and quality has made Cloisters a regular fixture in real-ale guides and a destination for both local drinkers and visitors seeking traditional pub culture.
Photographed at dusk, the image documents a working city pub rooted in independence, local knowledge and brewing heritage. It illustrates themes of Scottish pub culture, real ale traditions, independent hospitality, and the survival of characterful pubs within Edinburgh's urban fabric.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG3884 - Former Scotsman Newspaper offices now a luxury hotel in the heart of Edinburgh
In the 1900's the North Bridge running between the New and Old Town's of Edinburgh was widened and as part of this expansion a 190 foot high tower was built, into which the Scotsman Newspaper moved their offices.
The building cost around £500,000 and after the rest of the North Bridge extension was completed teamed with the Carlton directly opposite, it formed a imposing entrance to the Old Town.
The direct access from Market Street to the building was an ideal distribution outlet for the papers to be packed directly onto the trains at Waverley Station straight from the printing house that took up the entire basement. Across the middle floors of the building which is now home to some of the Scotsman's most luxurious rooms and suites were originally used for the editorial offices. What is today a stunning 2 floor Penthouse suite complete with its own Sauna used to be the Pigeon lofts where the news was sent far and wide across Scotland.
The Scotsman Newspaper was regarded as radical when it was first published but over the years it became Scotland's National Newspaper. It first opened its doors to the locals of Edinburgh for advertising in 1831 and what is today the North Bridge Brasserie was the original reception and trading rooms. With its stunning marble pillars and ornate balcony this room has witnessed much bartering and haggling over advertising costs. Today this stunningly majestic room is home to the Scotsman's Brasserie and bar offering a truly Scottish menu, imaginative cocktails and one of Edinburgh's largest collections of rare whiskeys.
In 2001 the Newspaper moved to their own purpose built offices in Holyrood whilst the stunning building was renovated into The Scotsman Hotel. Now with 56 rooms and 12 suites the hotel retained its originality and quirky features and this, along with the 5 star service we endeavor to deliver offers visitors a unique experience.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DED1G7 - A popular story in Edinburgh is that of Margaret (or Maggie) Dickson, a fishwife from Musselburgh, whose husband left, possibly press-ganged, to join the Royal Navy. Maggie had gone to work in an inn in the Borders, and was hanged in the Grassmarket in August 1724, at the age of 22 or 23, by hangman John Dalgliesh for murdering her illegitimate baby there by drowning it or placing it in the river Tweed at Kelso, shortly after the birth. After the hanging, a doctor declared Dickson dead, and her family argued with the medical students, who then were only allowed to dissect criminal corpses, so her body was taken back to Musselburgh on a cart. However, on the way there, the story was that her family went for a wake at an inn (possibly Sheep's Heid Inn, Duddingston) when they heard noises from the coffin as she awoke. Under Scots Law, her punishment had been carried out, so she could not be executed for a second time for the same crime (only later were the words until dead added to the sentence of hanging). Her resurrection was also to some extent seen as divine intervention, and so she was allowed to go free. In later life (and legend), she was referred to as hauf-hingit Maggie and attracted curiosity as she was seen back in the Grass-market in October 1724, with an item about a crowd forming to see her in the Scots Magazine. She remarried her husband (as ˜death' had parted them) and lived another 40 years.
A poem in Scots appears in a book Quines by actress Gerda Stevenson
Hauf-hingit Maggie

'Nightswimming' is a song by the American alternative rock band R.E.M. It was released in 1993 as the fifth single off the group's eighth album Automatic for the People.
'Nightswimming' is a ballad featuring singer Michael Stipe accompanied only by bassist Mike Mills on piano, a string arrangement by former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, and a prominent oboe by Deborah Workman in the latter part of the piece. Stipe sings about a group of friends who go skinny dipping at night, which draws from similar experiences in the band's early days.
The Cafe Royal is a bit of an institution in Edinburgh. as atmospheric as a bar and a place to eat at night as it is in the daytime.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HDN2 - The Canny Man's pub in Morningside is an Edinburgh institution established in 1871 and passed down through generations of the Kerr family. It is a free house, as free as the wind as Mr Kerr used to say, therefore it has no connection with any brewery and only sells the best of each brewers produce.
The public house serves food everyday from 12 - 3 pm and in the evenings from 6.30 - 9 pm (except Friday / Sunday nights). A snack menu is available till 5 pm. The food that is served is seafood and SMØRREBRØD sandwiches. Introduced many years ago, it has been tailor-made to suit customers needs, and freshly prepared each day, it is ideal as a drinker's meal.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5723444896 - 'This is one of my premier league pubs in the British Isles and it deserves a visit if you are in Edinburgh.
Google it on-line and you will generally find two types of review at other ends of the satisfaction spectrum, rarely in between, which is really unusual. You have to go there to find out why this is.
The elaborately decorated Canny Man's pub (formerly The Volunteer's Arms) on the corner of Canaan Lane
and the Bore Stane, an ancient monument adjacent to the former Parish Church. From the street it can be seen as a no packpacks, no creditcards, no cameras, no nutters kind of place. Inside its a jewel box of old typewriters, clocks etc. Quirky, unique.
The food is excellent, choice of spirits exceptional, including whiskey from the emerald isle. Champers is always available by the glass. Wine choice is extensive, draft beer at standard (high) Edinburgh prices. Also a nice beer garden when the weather is up to it.
So what is there not to like? This quote from www.edinburghpubguide.co.uk probably sums it up:
'I didn't find this place rude at all. In fact I found it quite the opposite. I was smartly dressed, polite, and got the same in return.
I get the impression the Canny Man's is deliberately alienating as customers the sort of people I and many others would cross the road to avoid.
I just wish the staff of the likes of the Cafe Royal and the Guildford Arms were a little 'ruder' to some of the neds who sadly drop in looking for pints of crap cider from time to time.
Canny Man's is one of the last remaining pubs to maintain customer standards which have sadly disappeared since the 1980s.
And the range of malts etc is outstanding'.
Dress and act your age not your shoe size and the staff will respect you in return. You will be guaranteed a unique session of food, drink and hospitality.
If you have visited this pub, leave a comment and tell me about your own experience!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4546943548 - 'One of my favourite watering holes in the city of Edinburgh. Delightfully tucked away off Princes Street and away from the rowdy bars of Rose Street. My default choice in there is Weihenstephan - '\u00e4lteste Brauerei der Welt' (lierally Dedicating Stefan - oldest brewery of the world), which is a lovely pint, in its own special tall glass. A plaque outside details its history.
The origins of the site was the Guildford Arms Hotel. This was more or less totally rteworked by Robert Macfarlane Cameron in 1898. It was modelled on the then popular victorian gin palace theme echoing the Phil in Liverpool and the Crown in Belfast among others. Most pubs were at the time male dominated and frankly dingy and possibly a little dangerous. The temperance movement is said to have encouraged the design of more luxurious pubs, particularly suitable for the fairer sex rather than just men.
The current configuration dates from 1940. However the centrepoint of the Guildford\u2019s late Victorian opulence is the magnificent Jacobean style ceiling which can be seen in this image. A row of real ale pumps on the bar all have the logo of DM Stewart, owner since victorian days.
A grand old Thorne Brothers Mirror hangs at the end of the bar. Just below the cornice height, wood panelling conceals a hidden room: legend has that this was aparently used to store spirits and other liquor which was pumped to the room from street level. A narrow walkway
leads from this room around the inner walls to the Gallery. This gallery now provides an ideal spot for diners to marvel at the superbly decorated ceiling or gaze down at the punters in the Public Bar. Both lunch and dinner are served in the Gallery Restaurant with lunch and snacks (Chilli Cashews is my weakness when in there) also served in the Lounge &
Public Bar areas. I can vouch for the excellent range of real ales. Usually a wider selection from Scotland (including the islands) than the neighbour to the south too. Readers of The Edinburgh Evening News voted the Guildford Arms Best City Bar in 1999. If you are in town and have a spare hour or so for victorian time travel, pop in!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG38AH - Thistle st bar in Edinburgh - Traditional city centre Scottish Bellhaven brewery pub Scotland, UK works as a grounded stock photograph because the subject is specific, legible and connected to wider social, economic or cultural themes. Thistle Street Bar is part of Edinburgh's New Town pub geography, where traditional interiors and brewery branding sit close to offices, shops, hotels and tourist routes. The scene can illustrate Scottish pub culture, Belhaven brewing, after-work drinking, city breaks, hospitality costs and the role of traditional pubs in polished Georgian streets. The location detail, Edinburgh, strengthens searches for regional features, travel pages, local-history pieces and news use where a named place matters. Relevant editorial themes include traditional pub, public house, beer culture, real ale, cask ale, pint glass and brewery heritage, with each theme rooted in the visible subject, place or activity. The scene has practical value for features needing authentic British or international street-level evidence, especially where policy, culture, business, tourism or social change is easier to explain through one clear example.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED4M14 - Photo shows Arcade, the Edinburgh Haggis & Whisky House, 48 Cockburn St, Jackson's Close, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK, EH1 1PB. The image is useful for illustrating British and Irish pub culture, real ale, traditional bars, hospitality, visitor economy stories and the continued importance of pubs as social places. Where a named pub, brewery, beer pump, pint glass or drinking street is visible, it can support articles on licensed premises, cask ale, CAMRA interest, tourism, nightlife, local character and changing high streets. The supplied location evidence places the subject at or near Edinburgh, Scotland, UK, EH1 1PB, which adds value for buyers searching by town, city, region or postcode. Weather and season may be visible outside or through the setting
the subject has clear hospitality and leisure value. It should work for editorial buyers needing authentic, non-staged British or travel imagery for news, magazine, blog, local government, heritage, housing, transport, tourism, retail, public policy or social commentary use. The caption should be checked against the visible photograph before upload so that any readable signs, weather, time of day and people context are accurately reflected without overstating facts not shown in the image. The strongest sales value is the combination of named subject, real location and everyday documentary style, giving picture editors a flexible image that can sit alongside features, opinion pieces, explainers, historical retrospectives and local news. Search relevance is helped by including concise place names, visible brand or wording, functional subject terms, and wider editorial concepts such as public realm, consumer behaviour, heritage, travel, leisure and community life where they genuinely match the picture.
