Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F89PK2 - Edinburgh Castle is an historic fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland from its position on the Castle Rock. Archaeologists have established human occupation of the rock since at least the Iron Age (2nd century AD), although the nature of the early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle on the rock since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crowns in 1603.
From the 15th century the castle's residential role declined, and by the 17th century it was principally used as military barracks with a large garrison. Its importance as a part of Scotland's national heritage was recognised increasingly from the early 19th century onwards, and various restoration programmes have been carried out over the past century and a half. As one of the most important strongholds in the Kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle was involved in many historical conflicts from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century to the Jacobite Rising of 1745.
Research undertaken in 2014 identified 26 sieges in its 1100-year-old history, giving it a claim to having been the most besieged place in Great Britain and one of the most attacked in the world

Few of the present buildings pre-date the Lang Siege of the 16th century, when the medieval defences were largely destroyed by artillery bombardment. The most notable exceptions are St Margaret's Chapel from the early 12th century, which is regarded as the oldest building in Edinburgh,[3] the Royal Palace and the early-16th-century Great Hall, although the interiors have been much altered from the mid-Victorian period onwards. The castle also houses the Scottish regalia, known as the Honours of Scotland and is the site of the Scottish National War Memorial and the National War Museum of Scotland. The British Army is still responsible for some parts of the castle, although its presence is now largely ceremonial.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXHBR - William Brodie (28 September 1741 ? 1 October 1788), more commonly known by his prestigious title of Deacon Brodie, was a Scottish cabinet-maker, deacon of a trades guild and Edinburgh city councillor, who maintained a secret life as a burglar, partly for the thrill, and partly to fund his gambling.
Popular myth holds that Deacon Brodie built the first gallows in Edinburgh and was also its first victim. Of this William Roughead in Classic Crimes states that after research he was sure that although the Deacon may have had some hand in the design, ...it was certainly not of his construction, nor was he the first to benefit by its ingenuity.
Sign at Deacon Brodie's Tavern on Edinburgh's Royal Mile
Brodie's alter ego
Robert Louis Stevenson, whose father owned furniture made by Brodie, wrote a play (with W. E. Henley) entitled Deacon Brodie, or The Double Life, which was unsuccessful. However, Stevenson remained fascinated by the dichotomy between Brodie's respectable fa??ade, and his real nature and was inspired to write The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886).[1]
Deacon Brodie is commemorated by a pub of that name on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, on the corner of the Lawnmarket and Bank Street which leads down to The Mound, and a close off the Royal Mile, which contained his family residence and workshops, still bears the name Brodie's Close. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXHC5 - William Brodie (28 September 1741 ?

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4441314818 - 'Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Dùn Èideann, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life
Whole misadventured piteous overthrows
Do with their death bury their parents' strife.
The fearful passage of their death-mark'd love,
And the continuance of their parents' rage,
Which, but their children's end, nought could remove,
Is now the two hours' traffic of our stage
The which if you with patient ears attend,
What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend.
They climbed every hill in the city, finished at Carlton, from a journey from Norfolk and within the big city of smoke and solitude..........
For anyone who has not experienced the many pleasures of Edinburgh city, Calton Hill is just to the east of the New Town in what North americans might call 'downtown'. There are several iconic monuments and buildings on the hill. The National Monument, Nelson's Monument, the Dugald Stewart Monument, the New Parliament House (the Royal High School), the Robert Burns Monument, the Political Martyrs' Monument and the Edinburgh City Observatory. Originally the Royal High School was earmarked for the site of the future Scottish Assembly. The new modern building is now at the foot of the hill at Holyrood.
The hill was owned by hill from Lord Balmerino until 1724 and what a view he must have had!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF23J2 - A panorama at dusk over Edinburgh taking in St Giles cathedral, The Castle, Bridges and Princes Street from Carlton Hill.
Visable from across the city, Calton Hill is the venue for events at various times in the year. The Beltane Fire Festival every April (30th of the month) each year is popular and generally attracts over 10,000 people.. This is a revival of the ancient Celtic May Day festival of Beltane. The Dussehra Hindu Festival has also been held the last few years in early October.
On the hill are a number of interesting structures. These include Governors House, the original site of Calton Jail, the National Monument, Nelson's Monument, the Dugald Stewart Monument, the New Parliament House (the Royal High School), the Robert Burns Monument, the Political Martyrs' Monument and the City Observatory. It is worth a walk up to it from Princes St. Follow the confusingly named Calton Hill lane up from the shopping centre.

Taken here between Christmas and New Year on the night of Hogmanay, the snow and ice of December give it a nice lightness, even at dusk. This is the calm before the storm as the party starts in Princes St and the gardens as the stage fires up to welcome in the new years celebrations. 2009 2010 2011 2012. Everyone needs a street party ticket and a wristband to enter the city arena area, unlike many years ago when it was a bit more easy going. Now there is a midnight torchlight procession from Parliament Square via the historic Lothian Edinburgh Royal Mile to the Son et Lumiére and fireworks finale on Calton Hill. On Edinburg new years day the the loony dook is the place to take a swim at South Queensferry in the river Forth in the shadow of the Forth Railway Bridge over to Fife.
Edinburgh Castle is a castle fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, from its position atop the volcanic Castle Rock. Human habitation of the site is dated back as far as the 9th century BC, although the nature of early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle here since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crowns in 1603.
As one of the most important fortresses in the Kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle has been involved in many historical conflicts, from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century, up to the Jacobite Rising of 1745, and has been besieged, both successfully and unsuccessfully, on several occasions. From the later 17th century, the castle became a military base, with a large garrison. Its importance as a historic monument was recognised from the 19th century, and various restoration programmes have been carried out since.
Few of the present buildings pre-date the Lang Siege of the 16th century, when the medieval fortifications were largely destroyed by artillery bombardment. The notable exception is St Margaret's Chapel, the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh, which dates from the early 12th century. Among other significant buildings of the castle are the Royal Palace, and the early-16th-century Great Hall. The castle also houses the Scottish National War Memorial, and National War Museum of Scotland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HD9B - The Malmaison Hotel at Leith at Night Edinburgh
It's the mother of all Malmaison's. The former house of ill-repute now has a reputation that's second to none, and it's also just a short taxi ride away from Waverley Station. Malmaison Edinburgh bides at Leith (as they say up here), just a stone's throw from the Royal Yacht Britannia, but offering far more funky luxury. Yes, when you want exciting hotels in Edinburgh, this is the King, not the castle. Our Edinburgh hotel puts you close to all of Edinburgh's cobbled splendours, incredible shopping and famous galleries. Then it's back to Mal for Scots dining with a twist, a fine selection of single malts and mojitos in the bar and then back to the slinkiest and most spectacular rooms in the Scots capital.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF0NA2 - A winter dusk view from The Vennel, a historic stepped alleyway off Browns Place in Edinburgh's Old Town, photographed at Edinburgh EH1 2HU. The image looks uphill towards Edinburgh Castle, dramatically positioned on its volcanic rock and silhouetted against a dark, moody evening sky. Light snow dusts the stone steps and surrounding rooftops, enhancing the sense of seasonal stillness and historic atmosphere.
The Vennel is one of Edinburgh's most distinctive medieval routes, its narrow stepped form reflecting the city's dense, vertical urban development that evolved within the constraints of defensive walls and steep terrain. Such passages once connected residential areas, workshops and places of worship, forming part of the everyday circulation of life in Scotland's capital for centuries.
The warm glow of traditional street lamps contrasts with the cold tones of the snow and sky, creating a scene often associated with romantic, literary and cinematic depictions of Edinburgh. Views of Edinburgh Castle from the Old Town are among the most iconic in Scotland, symbolising national history, royal power and the city's role as a centre of culture, governance and heritage.
Photographed in low light at dusk, the image captures Edinburgh as both a living city and a preserved historic environment, blending medieval architecture, winter weather and atmospheric lighting. The scene holds strong editorial appeal for themes of Scottish heritage, winter travel, historic European cities, romantic urban landscapes and cultural tourism, offering a timeless portrayal of Edinburgh's enduring character.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EYAX3K - Edinburgh Castle is a historic fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland from its position on the Castle Rock.
Research undertaken in 2014 identified 26 sieges in its 1100 year-old history, giving it a claim to having been the most besieged place in Great Britain and one of the most attacked in the world

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEMWXK - A dramatic panoramic view of Edinburgh Castle rising above the city from its commanding position on Castle Rock, photographed from the National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town. The medieval fortress, one of Scotland's most iconic landmarks, dominates the skyline as dark, brooding storm clouds gather overhead, creating a moody and atmospheric scene.
The image captures the contrast between the rugged volcanic rock of Castle Rock, the historic stone fortifications of the castle, and the dense urban fabric of Edinburgh below, including domes, spires, and rooftops typical of Scotland's capital city. The lighting and cloud cover suggest unsettled weather, common to the Scottish climate, adding drama and a sense of scale to the cityscape.
Edinburgh Castle has played a central role in Scottish history for over a thousand years and is a major symbol of national identity, tourism, and heritage. The wider Old Town and New Town areas of Edinburgh are designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites, recognised for their exceptional historic and architectural significance. This image is well suited for editorial use covering Scottish history, travel, tourism, culture, weather, urban landscapes, and European capital cities, as well as commercial projects requiring an instantly recognisable view of Edinburgh.
