a long thin area of land used in the manufacture of rope (the area is now known as 'Rope Walks'). They used to measure the rope from the top of Bold Street to the bottom because it was the standard length needed for sailing ships. It was laid out for residences around 1780 and named after Jonas Bold, a noted sugar trader and banker. In 1802 Bold became Mayor of Liverpool.
Merchants that worked on the docks needed houses close by. Therefore, houses were constructed in Hanover Street first, followed by Duke Street and then Bold Street. The fields that were in the area earlier were also developed quickly into houses. Although there had been port-related industrial activity in the area, with roperies occupying the site of what is now Bold Street to supply the sailing ships, this intensified along with a demand for residential properties so that the merchants could be located close to their business interests.

Each section was designed by a different architect. Before 1837 it traded from Hanging Ditch. The Corn & Produce Exchange was the gathering spot for thousands of traders from all over the region. This continued until the economic depression of the 1920s and 1930s. Following the Second World War, trade gradually declined and the trading floor fell into disuse.

Large industrial-style pendant lights hang above the tables, while slender cast-iron columns support the historic market structure. Exposed brick walls, high ceilings, roof glazing and surviving architectural details retain the character of the Victorian building. Contemporary counters, chalkboard menus and illuminated signs have been inserted around the perimeter without concealing the original scale and industrial appearance of the hall.
Mackie Mayor occupies a Grade II listed building constructed in 1858 as part of Manchester's former Smithfield Market complex. It is one of the surviving original market buildings from a district that once played an important role in the wholesale and retail distribution of food across the rapidly growing industrial city. The name commemorates Ivie Mackie, who served as Mayor of Manchester during the nineteenth century.
Following restoration and adaptive reuse, the building reopened as a food hall containing a collection of independent operators offering meals, snacks, coffee, beer and other drinks. The communal layout creates a more informal experience than a conventional restaurant, allowing groups to select food from different vendors while remaining seated together.
The photograph captures families, couples and groups using the hall in a relaxed and lively atmosphere. The combination of historic architecture, shared seating, independent businesses and contemporary hospitality illustrates the successful reuse of a former commercial market building.

Later in 2006, the former Intrepid Fox management team opened a new venue of the same name, near Centre Point. The Guardian reported the new venue's imminent closure in 2014.

Nando's opened its first restaurants within the United Kingdom, in 1992, in the west London suburbs of Ealing and Earls Court, initially focusing on takeaway food. The UK arm, owned by the Enthoven family via a private equity company, struggled until chairman Dick Enthoven put his son Robert in control. The focus then moved from takeaways to a mixed service (counter ordering and table service) model. This decision was taken after Nando's partnered with Harrison, a world-renowned branding and design agency.
They also advised Nando's to design each restaurant individually so no two restaurants were the same, a brand characteristic of the chain. Nando's expanded in the UK in 1993. The company now employs around 8,000 staff in the UK and as of 2013 had over 280 branches, with some sixty serving food conforming with Islamic dietary laws.
In 2010, Nando's UK won the Sunday Times's best place to work award in the big company category. Its sauces and marinades were also retailed in UK supermarkets.
Nando's claims to have the largest collection of South African art in the UK, with over 5,000 works displayed in restaurants

The United Kingdom is one of Nando's largest markets.
In March 2020, all 400 UK restaurants closed temporarily due to nationwide lockdown rules introduced by the government to limit the spread of COVID-19. Hugh Corbett, an entrepreneur with a background in the hotel industry, opened The Slug and Lettuce pub on Islington Green, North London in 1985. At the time, Islington was becoming increasingly gentrified due to its proximity to the City of London financial district. Corbett owned a small number of pubs, which he rechristened with humorous or nonsensical names, with the effect of differentiating them from competitors. His pubs had the then notable differential of stripped out carpets and enlarged windows so that people could see inside from the street.[12] Corbett listed his business in 1989 as Fast Forward, by which time it was a nine-strong chain. To get to the bottom of this debate and decide on a winning side once and for all, we reached out to pizza chefs across the US for their opinions on the appropriateness of pineapple. As the gatekeepers to pizza, we felt they must have a good grasp of what constitutes an acceptable pizza topping.
In a somewhat surprising turn of events, it seems that many pizza chefs, even the old-school Italian ones, have given in to the requests of the masses.
As it turns out, the customer is always right, as the saying goes, even when it comes irreverent requests such as pineapple on traditional pizza.

Chef Anthony Carron of 800 Degrees Pizzeria is one chef who has had to put his own beliefs aside in order to make his customers happy. Carron, who is adamant that he personally would never eat pineapple on a pizza, nor would any self-respecting Italian, has had to change his stubborn attitude towards pineapple on pizza. When he first opened 800 Degrees, he refused to carry it on principle, but it was literally the number one requested topping that we did not carry.

Finally relenting after a few years on behalf of their great customers, Carron now allows pineapple in his pizzeria, under one condition. Refusing to just serve garbage canned pineapple tidbits he instead buys whole, fresh Hawaiian gold pineapples, which are then peeled and diced by hand, tossed with extra virgin olive oil and sea salt, and roasted in their wood-burning ovens until they are caramelized, which actually sounds incredibly delicious.

Pig roasts, under a variety of names, are a common traditional celebration event in many places including the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Cuba. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P8DCPG - Bawtry is a small market town and civil parish which lies where the western branch of the Roman Ermine Street crosses the River Idle in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England and meets the old course of the Great North Road. Nearby towns include Gainsborough to the east, Retford to the south south-east, Worksop to the south-west and Doncaster to the north-west. Historically within the West Riding of Yorkshire, it had a population of 3,204 in the UK census of 2001, increasing to 3,573 at the 2011 Census.
Bawtry is located in the metropolitan borough of Doncaster on the border with Nottinghamshire, and is situated between Bircotes and Misson at the conjunction of the A614, A631 and A638 roads. The present A638 was for centuries the Great North Road, and in the 20th century the town was a notorious bottleneck, until it was bypassed in 1965. The county boundary with Nottinghamshire runs just to the south of the town and for this reason the southernmost house on the Great North Road is named 'Number One Yorkshire'.
The town's former prosperity was based on its communications, the River Idle in the days when it was a port, the Great North Road in the coaching era, and the Great Northern Railway.
Bawtry's geographical location is 53° 25' 40 North, 1° 1' West, at an elevation of around 65 feet (20 m) above sea level.
The town is located just south of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, formerly RAF Finningley. Bawtry Hall was home to RAF No.1 Group Bomber Command during and after the Second World War, and became the Headquarters of RAF Strike Command (see RAF Bawtry). From 1989 to 2013 Bawtry Hall operated as a Christian conference centre and a base for several Christian organisations.

The Dome is a bar, restaurant and conference complex and was originally the long since defunct Commercial Bank of Scotland's HQ. At Christmas the exterior on George Street and the interior are both lavishly decorated. As you enter the building there is a distinct whiff of cinnamon.

Slightly cheesily at the official opening Councillor Simon said, \u201cIt\u2019s a great vote of confidence that Brampton\u2019s has chosen to set up in Crewe and can only add to the town\u2019s economic growth. I have also become a personal fan and regularly pop in for a pie at lunchtime, as they are located irresistibly close to Crewe\u2019s Municipal Buildings.\u201d I did not check with Dave and Sarah how many pies had in fact been purchased / consumed by the local elected elite, when I popped in to say hello to my old work mate.
Crewe is in fact slightly south of what I would probably term 'Pie Central' in the UK, Wigan. While justly famous for its 1970's Northern Soul 'Wigan casino' pies are a large slice of the Wigan economy.
The annual World Pie Eating Championship is usually held at Harry's Bar on Wallgate, Wigan. The competition has been held since 1992. In 2006, due to relentless pressure from the Vegetarian Society a vegetarian version was added.
In the 2006 competition, the meat and potato pies were all 12 cm (5 in) in diameter with a depth of 3.5 cm (1.5 in). In the separate vegetarian contest, the pies were 10 cm (4 in) by 3 cm (1.2 in).[3]
In the 2007 competition, entries included a competitor's dog, Charlie, who had eaten 20 pies and damaged a further 10 the night before the competition, nearly jeopardising the event.
The last two years victors have been
Fred Wyatt, a 61-year-old warehouse packer won the 2008 Championship, which was broadcast live on the internet by pay-per-view. In 2009
Barry Rigby, a warehouseman won, eating a pie in a record 45 seconds.
Controversy was caused in 2005 when pies were imported (out of the Wigan area) from nearby Farnworth, Bolton and local Wigan pies were sidelined, resulting in a four-man strong protest. A similar situation arose in 2009, with pies being sourced from Adlington.
More controversy was caused in 2006 when the competition was changed (to meet government healthy-eating guidelines) from the number of pies consumed in a given time, to the fastest time to consume a single pie.
Wiganers are proud to be called pie-eaters, but the nickname is not thought to be because of their appetite for the delicacy. The name is said to date from the 1926 General Strike when Wigan miners were starved back to work before their counterparts in surrounding towns and were forced to eat 'humble pie'.

She does a really comprehensive breakfast selection including my favourite black (blood) pudding. The \u00a33.30 belly buster (thats barely 3 Euros 60, what are you waiting for, get over to Roman Northwich, in that damn chunnel, swap those croisants and churros for some proper breakfast!!!). A large batch filled with two bacon, one sausage, egg, tomatoes, mushroom, black pudding and cheese. Theres also version for the Atkins (low carb) generation and our vegetarian bretheren.
You can choose your own bread (thankfully not the identikit bread at the Subway franchise further into town), but your choice from a whole raft of types. Fillings cover all tastes from plain turkey salad to Feta &
Pesto, Brie and Cranberry, roasted vegatables, smoked and cream cheese.

It has its origins across the road from where it now stands back in 1826. It was known then for its Oysters, one of the rare foods I have given up trying to enjoy, they are just not for me. Local architect Robert Paterson is responsible for its parisian style and its a great step back to victorian gin palace times, a bit like the Phil in Liverpool ( www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3804831303/ ).
On the menu today was a lovely tomato based fish soup, Moules (Mussels to you), mixed starters to share, pork in cider, although the homemade sandwiches and burgers in there are also really nice. i had the fish soup followed by a really good Cranachan (a local Scots desert with double cream, oats and raspberries), try it if you get the chance, naughty but nice!

Its one of my favourite spices, ground on to most things I eat if needed or not. Also, a few slipped into boiling rice to go with a curry sauce.
Black pepper is a native plant of South India and is extensively grown there and elsewhere in tropical regions. The pink balls of the fresh fruit can be seen on the trees and when crushed in its raw state has a sweet pepper aroma. Green peppercorns are just the immature fruits.
Cochin in southern india is a major spice centre and it is easy to visit some of the spice warehouses etc. I remember when backpacking around Cochin there was the smell of pepper in the air and quite often you were crushing escapee peppercorns underfoot - marvellous.
