Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAX2K - Close-up detail of historic letter boxes inside the General Post Office (GPO) on O'Connell Street, Dublin 1, Ireland. The image shows the original An Post fittings with bilingual Irish and English inscriptions indicating postal destinations, alongside a centrally mounted clock bearing the An Post emblem. The use of Irish language text reflects national identity and the role of the postal service in public life following independence.
The GPO is one of Ireland's most significant historic buildings and served as the headquarters of the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising, a pivotal event in the struggle for Irish independence. During the uprising, the building was heavily damaged, but it was later restored and remains a functioning post office as well as a symbol of the Irish state.
Today, the GPO continues to operate as a working postal hub while also housing exhibitions dedicated to the Easter Rising and Ireland's revolutionary period. The interior details, including original letter boxes and signage, provide a tangible link between everyday civic services and major historical events. The image captures themes of communication, national memory, heritage conservation, and the enduring presence of historic public institutions in modern urban Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X2CG3E - This image shows the entrance to the London North Eastern Railway (LNER) First Class Lounge located within Leeds railway station in West Yorkshire, England. The photograph focuses on the distinctive red curved signage reading First Class Lounge, clearly branded with LNER corporate identity and positioned above the entrance doorway. The lounge provides a dedicated waiting area for first class rail passengers, offering a quieter, more comfortable environment away from the main station concourse.
Leeds railway station is one of the busiest transport hubs in the north of England, serving as a major interchange on the East Coast Main Line and a key gateway for rail travel between Leeds, London, the North East, and Scotland. Operated by Network Rail, the station has undergone significant modernisation in recent decades, reflecting the growing importance of Leeds as a regional economic and commercial centre.
First class lounges such as this form part of the wider premium service offering provided by LNER, catering primarily to business travellers, long-distance passengers, and frequent rail users. The image captures contemporary railway interior design, clear passenger wayfinding, and the emphasis on branded customer experience within modern UK rail infrastructure. The photograph is suitable for editorial use relating to rail transport, passenger services, travel, public transport investment, and the operation of Britain's intercity railway network.

Image of Eighth Station: Jesus meets the women of JerusalemLeader: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
All: Because by your holy cross You have redeemed the world.
Jesus, as you carry your cross you see a group of women along the road. As you pass by you see they are sad. You stop to spend a moment with them, to offer them some encouragement. Although you have been abandoned by your friends and are in pain, you stop and try to help them.
As a child, sometimes I think a lot about myself. I think about what I want and would like people to spend their lives pleasing me.
As an adult, sometimes I act like a child. I become so absorbed in myself and what I'd like that I forget about the needs of others. I take them for granted, and often ignore their needs.
Help me think more about others. Help me remember that others have problems, too. Help me respond to them even when I'm busy or preoccupied with my own problems.
My Jesus, Who didst comfort the pious women of Jerusalem who wept to see Thee bruised and torn, comfort my soul with Thy tender pity, for in Thy pity lies my trust. May my heart ever answer Thine.
Our Father.... Hail Mary.... Glory be to the Father....

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RECE2H - Meadowbank Stadium (officially the Meadowbank Sports Centre) is a multi-purpose sports facility located in the Meadowbank area of Edinburgh, Scotland. Built on the site of the earlier New Meadowbank and Old Meadowbank sports venues, it was originally built to host the 1970 Commonwealth Games. It also hosted the Games in 1986, becoming the first venue to host the Games twice. It is the current home of Scottish League One side Edinburgh City.
The stadium has also regularly hosted football. It was the home ground of Scottish Football League team Meadowbank Thistle between 1974 and 1995, becoming the first all-seated football ground in the UK in the process, it hosted senior non-league football as the home ground of Edinburgh City. League football returned to Meadowbank in 2016 following City's promotion to the Scottish Professional Football League. The Meadowbank complex also hosted Leith Athletic, which played on the Meadowbank 3G artificial pitch adjacent to the main stadium since 2013.
In the early months of 2019 the stadium was demolished and work begun on construction of its replacement. In 2022, following the completion of construction, Edinburgh City returned to Meadowbank.
Meadowbank Stadium was also used for rugby union as the home venue of Edinburgh Rugby between 2002 and 2004.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3JR6A - This image shows an interior display at the House of Terror Museum on Andr?ssy ?t in Budapest, Hungary, featuring walls densely covered with Soviet-era propaganda posters, slogans, and illustrations. The materials are presented in both Hungarian and Russian, reflecting Hungary's position within the Soviet sphere of influence during the Cold War and the imposition of communist ideology following the Second World War.
The posters use the visual language of socialist realism, portraying idealised workers, peasants, soldiers, and party officials, alongside slogans promoting loyalty to the state, collective labour, industrial production, and ideological conformity. Bold colours, heroic figures, and optimistic imagery contrast sharply with the historical reality of political repression, surveillance, and restricted freedoms experienced under communist rule.
The display is intentionally overwhelming, with overlapping images and text forming a wallpaper-like collage that mirrors the saturation of propaganda in everyday life during the period. The mixture of languages underlines the dominance of Soviet authority over national identity, while also illustrating how messaging was adapted for local audiences within Hungary.
Photographed indoors under artificial lighting, the image emphasises the texture, colour, and density of the printed material, making it suitable for editorial use addressing themes of totalitarianism, propaganda, Cold War history, visual culture, human rights, and the legacy of communism in Central and Eastern Europe.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJW6YW - Grappenhall is a suburb of Warrington, Cheshire, in the civil parish of Grappenhall and Thelwall, which had a population of 9,377 at the 2001 census. At the 2021 census the population of the parish was 9,651.
Grappenhall is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 with the name Gropenhale and with a valuation of five shillings.
Sandstone carving of a 'Cheshire Cat', St Wilfrid's Church, Grappenhall
St Wilfrid's Church has a carving of a cat on the west face of the tower. This may have been Lewis Carroll's inspiration for the grinning Cheshire Cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The church itself was first constructed in 1120, though was rebuilt 400 years later. The church was also, at a time, in the possession of the Boidelle (Boydell) family.
Along with the church, the centre of the village contains two pubs, the Parr Arms and the Ram's Head, and Grappenhall Hall Residential School (closed down) and St Wilfrid's Primary School. Bradshaw Community Primary School is located north of the village centre.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJHP4C - Dame Elisabeth Jean Frink CH DBE RA (14 November 1930 ? 18 April 1993) was an English sculptor and printmaker. Her Times obituary noted the three essential themes in her work as the nature of Man
the 'horseness' of horses
and the divine in human form
Although she made many drawings and prints, she is best known for her bronze outdoor sculpture, which has a distinctive cut and worked surface. This is created by her adding plaster to an armature, which she then worked back into with a chisel and surform.[10] This process contradicts the very essence of modeling form established in the modeling tradition and defined by Rodin's handling of clay
Frink kept up a hectic pace of sculpting and exhibiting until early 1991, when an operation for cancer of the oesophagus caused an enforced break. However, short weeks later Frink was again creating sculptures and preparing for solo exhibitions. In September, she underwent further surgery. Again, Frink did not let this hold her back, proceeding with a planned trip for exhibitions to New Orleans, Louisiana, and New York City. The exhibitions were a success, but Frink's health was clearly deteriorating. Despite this, she was working on a colossal statue, Risen Christ, for Liverpool Cathedral. This sculpture would prove to be her last
just one week after its installation, Frink died from cancer on 18 April 1993, aged 62, in Blandford Forum, Dorset. Stephen Gardiner, Frink's official biographer, argued that this final sculpture was appropriate: This awesome work, beautiful, clear and commanding, a vivid mirror-image of the artist's mind and spirit, created against fearful odds, was a perfect memorial for a remarkable great individual

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PFAAAD - The Fall Extricate tour opened 01/03/1990 at Poole arts centre, closing 26/03/1990 at the Top rank Brighton - Cog Sinister
Extricate is the 12th album by post-punk band the Fall. It was made immediately after bandleader Mark E. Smith divorced guitarist Brix Smith. Brix's departure helped define the sound of this album: her background vocals and relatively pop-oriented guitar, which had become mainstays of The Fall, are noticeably absent in this release. In one of the more unusual events in the group's career, she was replaced by founding former member Martin Bramah, who had previously left the group in 1979 to form his own group Blue Orchids.
Lead-off single Telephone Thing could have been seen as a nod to the Manchester scene of the time as the sound is quite similar to the dance-influenced music that was being released by Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses in 1989. However, its origins were in Smith's previous collaboration with Coldcut on their track I'm in Deep, which, in turn, led to Coldcut producing the track and Black Monk Theme Part II, one of two tracks by 60s garage band The Monks to be covered on the album (the other being Black Monk Theme ? The Fall retitled both tracks). Elsewhere, Bramah, appearing on his first Fall album since Live at the Witch Trials adds a distinctly raw, even rockabilly sound to some of the songs. However, the album's best-known track was one of the least typical of the group's catalogue: Bill Is Dead, a slow-paced tender love song which topped John Peel's Festive Fifty that year, the only occasion in the DJ's lifetime when his favourite band would do so. Although originally conceived by Smith and Craig Scanlon as a parody of The Smiths, Smith changed lyrical tack when he decided Scanlon's music deserved better, delivering a highly personal lyric. However, at Smith's insistence, it was not released as a single.
The critical reception to Extricate was largely positive

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KF6TE4 - York railway station is on the East Coast Main Line serving the city of York, North Yorkshire, England. It is 188 miles 40 chains (303.4 km) north of London King's Cross and on the main line it is situated between Doncaster to the south and Thirsk to the north. As of June 2018, the station is operated by London North Eastern Railway.
York station is a key junction approximately halfway between London and Edinburgh. It is approximately five miles (eight kilometres) north of the point where the Cross Country and TransPennine Express routes via Leeds join the main line, connecting Scotland and the North East, North West, Midlands and southern England. The junction was historically a major site for rolling stock manufacture, maintenance and repair.
In Britain's 100 Best Railway Stations by Simon Jenkins, the station was one of only ten to be awarded five stars
The station was designated as a Grade II* listed building in 1968.
The track layout through and around the station was remodelled again in 1988 as part of the resignalling scheme that was carried out prior to the electrification of the ECML shortly afterwards by British Rail. This resulted in several bay platforms (mainly on the eastern side) being taken out of service and the track to them removed. Consequently, the number of platforms was reduced from 15 to 11. At the same time a new signalling centre (York IECC) was commissioned on the western side of the station to control the new layout and also take over the function of several other signal boxes on the main line. The IECC here now supervises the main line from Temple Hirst (near Doncaster) through to Northallerton, along with sections of the various routes branching from it. It has also (since 2001?2) taken over responsibility for the control area of the former power box at Leeds and thus signals trains as far away as Gargrave and Morley.
In 2006?7, to improve facilities for bus, taxi and car users as well as pedestrians and cyclists

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KF6WK3 - York railway station is on the East Coast Main Line serving the city of York, North Yorkshire, England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD23X4 - This panoramic image shows the beach and seafront at Filey on the North Yorkshire coast. The wide sandy shoreline curves gently away from the promenade, emphasising the scale and openness of Filey Bay. In the foreground and lower right of the image, a solitary man stands alone on the sand, providing a strong sense of scale against the expansive coastal landscape.
Above the beach, people gather along the stone promenade and near the seafront buildings, creating a contrast between social activity and solitude. The lone figure on the beach appears detached from the busier promenade above, introducing a quiet, reflective mood to the scene without overt action.
The photograph was taken in daylight under calm conditions, likely outside peak summer season, when Filey's beach often feels spacious and uncrowded. The combination of wide sand, gentle sea, and restrained human presence reflects the character of Filey as a traditional British seaside resort with a slower pace than larger coastal towns.
The image works well for editorial use illustrating British coastal life, seaside tourism, solitude, contemplation, and the relationship between people and open coastal environments.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3082P - Crossley Brothers was set up in 1867 by brothers Francis (1839?97) and William J.(1844?1911). Francis, with help from his uncle, bought the engineering business of John M Dunlop at Great Marlborough Street in Manchester city centre, including manufacturing pumps, presses, and small steam engines.
In 1869 they had the foresight to acquire the UK and world (except German) rights to the patents of Otto and Langden of Cologne for the new gas fueled atmospheric internal combustion engine and in 1876 these rights were extended to the famous Otto four-stroke cycle engine. The changeover to four stroke engines was remarkably rapid with the last atmospheric engines being made in 1877.
The business flourished. In 1881, Crossley Brothers became a private limited company (i.e. Crossley Brothers Ltd.), and then in 1882 it moved to larger premises in Pottery Lane, Openshaw, in eastern Manchester.
Crossley Brothers built diesel engines for stationary, marine and locomotive use. There was a wide range of engines from six to 3200 horsepower (Crossley) and up to 9000 horsepower (Crossley-Pielstick).
Their marine engines had a reputation for durability and reliability.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHB70F - A hot cross bun is a spiced sweet bun usually made with fruit, marked with a cross on the top, and has been traditionally eaten on Good Friday in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, India, Pakistan and the United States. They are available all year round in some places, including the UK
The bun marks the end of the Christian season of Lent and different parts of the hot cross bun have a certain meaning, including the cross representing the crucifixion of Jesus, and the spices inside signifying the spices used to embalm him at his burial and may also include orange peel to reflect the bitterness of his time on the Cross
One theory is that the contemporary hot cross bun originates from St Albans, in England, where, in 1361, Brother Thomas Rodcliffe, a 14th-century monk at St Albans Abbey, developed a similar recipe called an 'Alban Bun' and distributed the bun to the local poor on Good Friday.
In 1592, during the reign of Elizabeth I of England, the London Clerk of Markets issued a decree forbidding the sale of hot cross buns and other spiced breads, except at burials, on Good Friday, or at Christmas. The punishment for transgressing the decree was forfeiture of all the forbidden product to the poor. As a result of this decree, hot cross buns at the time were primarily made in domestic kitchens. Further attempts to suppress the sale of these items took place during the reign of James I of England (1603?1625)
The traditional method for making the cross on top of the bun is to use shortcrust pastry, though some 21st century recipes recommended a paste of flour and water

Sited in the centre of O'Connell Street, the city's main thoroughfare, it is one of Ireland's most famous buildings, not least because it served as the headquarters of the leaders of the Easter Rising. It was the last of the great Georgian public buildings erected in the capital.
The foundation-stone of the building, which was designed by Francis Johnston, was laid by the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Charles Whitworth, 1st Earl Whitworth, on 12 August 1814. The front, which extends 67.1 metres (220 ft), has an Ionic portico (24.4 metres (80 ft) wide), of six fluted Ionic columns, 137.16 centimetres (54 inches) in diameter. The frieze of the entablature is highly enriched, and in the tympanum of the pediment were the royal arms until removed following restoration in the 1920s. On the acroteria of the pediment are three statues by John Smyth
During the Easter Rising of 1916, the GPO served as the headquarters of the uprising's leaders. It was from outside this building on the 24th of April 1916, that Patrick Pearse read out the Proclamation of the Irish Republic. The building was destroyed by fire in the course of the rebellion, save for the granite facade, and not rebuilt until 1929, by the Irish Free State government

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M84J99 - The Garden of Remembrance (Irish: An Gaird??n Cuimhneach?in) is a memorial garden in Dublin dedicated to the memory of all those who gave their lives in the cause of Irish Freedom. It is located in the northern fifth of the former Rotunda Gardens in Parnell Square, a Georgian square at the northern end of O'Connell Street. The garden was opened by Eamon de Valera during the semicentennial of the Easter Rising in 1966
The Garden commemorates freedom fighters from various uprisings, including:
the 1798 rebellion of the Society of United Irishmen
the 1803 rebellion of Robert Emmet
the 1848 rebellion of Young Ireland
the 1867 rising of the Fenian Brotherhood
the 1916 Easter Rising of the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army
the 1919?21 Irish War of Independence of the Irish Republican Army
The site of the Garden is where the Irish Volunteers were founded in 1913, and where several leaders of the 1916 Rising were held overnight before being taken to Kilmainham Gaol. President ??amon de Valera opened the Garden in 1966 on the fiftieth anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising, in which he had been a commander
The Garden was designed by D?ith?? Hanly. It is in the form of a sunken cruciform water-feature. Its focal point is a statue of the Children of Lir by Ois??n Kelly, symbolising rebirth and resurrection, added in 1971, cast in the Ferdinando Marinelli Artistic Foundry of Florence, Italy.
In 1976, a contest was held to find a poem which could express the appreciation and inspiration of this struggle for freedom. The winner was Dublin born author Liam Mac Uist??n, whose poem We Saw a Vision, an aisling style poem, is written in Irish, French, and English on the stone wall of the monument. The aisling (vision) form was used in eighteenth-century poems longing for an end to Ireland's miserable condition.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K43P0X - The London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) was the second largest (after LMS) of the Big Four railway companies created by the Railways Act 1921 in Britain. It operated from 1 January 1923 until nationalisation on 1 January 1948. At that time, it was divided into the new British Railways' Eastern Region, North Eastern Region, and partially the Scottish Region.
It covered the area north and east of London. It included the East Coast Main Line from London to Edinburgh via York and Newcastle upon Tyne and the routes from Edinburgh to Aberdeen and Inverness. Most of the country east of the Pennines was within its purview, including East Anglia. The main workshops were in Doncaster, with others at Darlington, Inverurie and Stratford, London
On the privatisation of British Rail in 1996, the franchise to run long distance express trains on the East Coast Main Line was won by Sea Containers Ltd, who named the new operating company Great North Eastern Railway (GNER), a name and initials deliberately chosen to echo the LNER.
Following the collapse of Virgin Trains East Coast in May 2018, the newly-nationalised operator of the East Coast Main Line was named London North Eastern Railway to evoke the earlier company

The shop was originally located in Afflecks Palace and has recently moved to its present location on Stevenson Square (5a Stevenson Sq, Northern Quarter, Manchester, M1 1DN) in 2011. It soon became a cultural icon and integral part within the Manchester music scene. Back in the late 80's E Bloc helped to launch bands such as the Inspiral Carpets, while also hosting in-store signings with The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays. The shop was also responsible for breaking much of the new dance music at the time, being one of the only shops in the UK to import dance music from around the globe. One of the owners went on to become part of 808 State. E Bloc also had heavy involvement in the early career paths of A Guy Called Gerald & K Klass. Many famous faces have worked behind the counter or been regular customers in the shop. Local DJ's and globe trotting club DJ's would use E Bloc as their first port of call to get their hands on the latest vinyl promos. Customers include Laurent Garnier, Jon Da Silva, Mike Pickering, Graeme Park, Sasha, Chemical Brothers, DJ Marky, Anthony Shake Shakir, Pepe Bradock, Eric Morillo, Josh Wink, Ben Sims, James Holroyd, Derrick Carter, Carl Cox, Synkro, Indigo, AnD, XXXY, Jon K, Rich Reason and many more. Previous members of staff include Justin Robertson, Marcus Intalex, Mark XTC, Moonboots, Dean Wilson, Paul Walker, Paul Taylor, Karl Roscoe, Chris Fatboy.
E Bloc has always been at the cutting edge of the music scene as is arguably one of the most respected, renowned, influential and notorious in the world. Today, the store is still shifting vinyl and cd's, specialising mainly in drum & bass, jungle, dubstep, house, techno and electronica
As mentioned before, we relocated in 2011 to Stevenson Square in the Northern Quarter, where we continue to provide the best in electronic music on vinyl.

others have on-board kitchens and prepare food from scratch, or they heat up food that was prepared in a bricks and mortar commercial kitchen. Sandwiches, hamburgers, french fries, and other regional fast food fare is common. In recent years, associated with the pop-up restaurant phenomenon, food trucks offering gourmet cuisine and a variety of specialties and ethnic menus have become particularly popular.[3] Food trucks may also sell cold beverages such as soda pop and water. Food trucks, along with portable food booths and food carts, are on the front line of the street food industry that serves an estimated 2.5 billion people every day

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHB6XP - Charing Cross railway station (also known as London Charing Cross)[4] is a central London railway terminus between the Strand and Hungerford Bridge in the City of Westminster. It is the terminus of the South Eastern Main Line to Dover via Ashford. All trains are operated by Southeastern, which provides the majority of commuter and regional services to south-east London and Kent. It is connected to Charing Cross Underground station and is near to Embankment Underground station and Embankment Pier.
The station was originally opened by the South Eastern Railway in 1864. It takes its name from its proximity to the road junction Charing Cross, the notional centre of London from which distances from the city are measured. During the 19th century the station became the main London terminus for continental traffic via boat trains, and served several prestigious international services. It was badly damaged by a roof collapse in 1905 and extensively rebuilt, subsequently becoming an important meeting point for military and government traffic during World War I. By this time, Charing Cross station was seen as out of date by some politicians and proposals were made to replace Hungerford Bridge with a road bridge or road/rail combination, with the station moving to the south bank of the River Thames in the case of a road-only replacement. The station was bombed several times during World War II, and was rebuilt afterwards, re-opening in 1951. In the late 1980s, the station complex was redesigned by Terry Farrell and rebuilt to accommodate a modern office block, now known as Embankment Place.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDF095 - Murals in Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the region's past and present political and religious divisions.
Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. A mural therefore exists to express an idea or message and could generally be seen as reflecting values held dear to that community.
In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands
murals of international solidarity with revolutionary groups are equally common, as are those which highlight a particular issue, for example the Ballymurphy Massacre or the McGurk's Bar bombing. In working class unionist communities, murals are used to promote Ulster loyalist paramilitary groups such as the Ulster Defence Association and Ulster Volunteer Force and commemorate their deceased members. However traditional themes such as William III of England and the Battle of the Boyne, the Battle of the Somme and the 36th Ulster Division are equally common

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDWTFT - James Connolly (Irish: S??amas ?? Conghaile
5 June 1868 ? 12 May 1916) was an Irish republican and socialist leader, aligned to syndicalism and the Industrial Workers of the World.
He was born in the Cowgate area of Edinburgh, Scotland, to Irish-born parents. He left school for working life at the age of 11, but became one of the leading Marxist theorists of his day. He also took a role in Scottish and American politics. He was executed by a British firing squad because of his leadership role in the Easter Rising of 1916.
in 1910 he was right-hand man to fellow-syndicalist James Larkin in the Irish Transport and General Workers Union. He stood twice for the Wood Quay ward of Dublin Corporation but was unsuccessful. His name, and those of his family, appears in the 1911 Census of Ireland - his occupation is listed as National Organiser Socialist Party
In 1913, in response to the Lockout, he, along with an ex-British officer, Jack White, founded the Irish Citizen Army (ICA), an armed and well-trained body of labour men whose aim was to defend workers and strikers, particularly from the frequent brutality of the Dublin Metropolitan Police. Though they only numbered about 250 at most, their goal soon became the establishment of an independent and socialist Irish nation. He also founded the Irish Labour Party as the political wing of the Irish Trade Union Congress in 1912 and was a member of its National Executive. Around this time he met Winifred Carney in Belfast, who became his secretary and would later accompany him during the Easter Rising.
Connolly was sentenced to death by firing squad for his part in the rising. On 12 May 1916 he was taken by military ambulance to Royal Hospital Kilmainham, across the road from Kilmainham Gaol, and from there taken to the gaol, where he was to be executed. Visited by his wife, and asking about public opinion, he commented, They will all forget that I am an Irishman

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H4EE2R - Sir Humphrey Chetham (10 July 1580 ? 1653) was an English merchant, responsible for the creation of Chetham's Hospital and Chetham's Library, the oldest public library in the English-speaking world.
Chetham was born in Crumpsall, Lancashire, England, the son of a successful Manchester merchant who lived in Crumpsall Hall. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School, and in 1597 was apprenticed to Samuel Tipping, a Manchester linen draper. Chetham remained with Tipping until 1605, when he moved to London with his brother George and set up a partnership with him trading in various textiles. The business was successful, since the fabric was bought in London and sold for a higher price in Manchester. He acquired Clayton Hall in Manchester as his home, and in 1628 was also able to buy Turton Tower from William Orrell.
In 1631, he was asked to be knighted after his huge wealth became known to the crown, but he refused it, and so was fined. He later became the High Sheriff of Lancashire in 1635, a job he was unable to refuse, and in 1643 he was forced into the position of General Treasurer of Lancashire, which he found very difficult for his age. He also began to obtain debts, and he feared that on his death parliament would take his money. He therefore donated money to form a blue coat school for forty poor boys, which later became Chetham's Hospital and then Chetham's School of Music. He also left money to form the Chetham's Library, which included money to pay for the books. More libraries were constructed later on from this money.
After Chetham's death, at Clayton Hall, in 1653, the school and library opened. His contribution is commemorated by a statue and a window in Manchester Cathedral and by a statue and mural in Manchester Town Hall. By prior arrangement, Clayton Hall was left to the surviving nephew, George.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy G9BJTJ - York railway station is the main-line railway station serving the city of York in North Yorkshire, England. It lies on Britain's East Coast Main Line (ECML), 188.5 miles (303 km) from London. Originally it was part of the North Eastern Railway.
Despite the small size of the city, York is one of the most important railway stations on the British railway network because of its role as a key railway junction approximately halfway between London, the capital of England, and Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It is few miles north of the point where the Cross Country and TransPennine Express routes via Leeds leave/join the ECML connecting Scotland and the North East with southern England, the North West and the Midlands. The junction was historically a major site for rolling stock manufacture, maintenance and repair.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM9AW6 - Pie and mash is a traditional working-class food, originating in the East End of London. Pie, mash and eel shops have been in London since the 19th century, and are still common in East and South London and in many parts of Kent and Essex. The shops may serve stewed or jellied eels.
During the Victorian era, industrial air pollution tended to be worse in the east and south east of London because of the prevailing westerly wind, with the result that the East End was settled more by the working classes, while the western part of the city was home to higher social classes. The working class were poor and favoured foodstuffs that were cheap, in plentiful supply and easy to prepare.
The savoury pie had long been a traditional food, and its small handsized form also made it a transportable meal, protected from dirt by its cold pastry crust, and filled with cheap minced meat, usually mutton. Adding cheap mashed potatoes, together with a sauce made with fish stock and parsley, made it a plate-based sit-down meal.
Jellied eels are often associated with pie and mash, as European eels cooked in gelatine also became a common worker's meal since eels were one of the few forms of fish that could survive in the heavily polluted River Thames and London's other rivers at that time. Supply was plentiful through the late 1800s, particularly from the Dutch fishing boats landing catches at Billingsgate Fish Market.
Since 2010, as revealed in a joint study by the Zoological Society of London and the Environment Agency, the number of eels captured in research traps in the River Thames fell from 1,500 in 2005 to 50 in 2010, meaning most eels used in pie and mash shops are now from the Netherlands and Northern Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM9AWB - Pie and mash is a traditional working-class food, originating in the East End of London. Pie, mash and eel shops have been in London since the 19th century, and are still common in East and South London and in many parts of Kent and Essex. The shops may serve stewed or jellied eels.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A9GHXJ - Pussy willow is a name given to many of the smaller species of the genus Salix (willows and sallows) when their furry catkins are young in early spring. These species include (among many others):
Goat willow or goat sallow (Salix caprea), a small tree native to northern Europe and northwest Asia.
Grey willow or grey sallow (Salix cinerea), a small tree native to northern Europe.
American pussy willow (Salix discolor), native to northern North America.
Before the male catkins of these species come into full flower they are covered in fine, greyish fur, leading to a fancied likeness to tiny cats, also known as pussies. The catkins appear long before the leaves, and are one of the earliest signs of spring. At other times of year trees of most of these species are usually known by their ordinary names.
The flowering shoots of pussy willow are used both in Europe and America for spring religious decoration on Palm Sunday, as a replacement for palm branches, which do not grow that far north.
Ukrainian and Russian Orthodox
Ruthenian, Polish, Romanian, Czech, Slovak, Bavarian, and Austrian Roman Catholics
Finnish and Baltic Lutherans and Orthodox
and various other Eastern European peoples carry pussy willows on Palm Sunday instead of palm branches. This custom has continued to this day among Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Romanian Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, Ruthenian Catholic, Ukrainian Catholic, Kashubian Catholic and Polish Catholic ??migr??s to North America. Sometimes, on Palm Sunday they will bless both palms and pussy willows in church. The branches will often be preserved throughout the year in the family's icon corner.
Pussy willow also plays a prominent role in Polish Dyngus Day (Easter Monday) observances, continued also among Polish-Americans,especially in the Buffalo, New York, area.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4527546693 - 'These are the sunday helpers who feed the congregation at a hut rear of the church yard. There is a veritable Easter themed feast. I stumbled upon one of the ladies by chance and she kindly let me see the food spread.
The Collegiate Church of St Nicholas Buccleuch, formerly known as Dalkeith Parish Church, stands on the High Street. Dedicated to St Nicholas, this medieval church became a collegiate establishment in 1406, founded by Sir James Douglas. The nave and transepts date from 1854, when the inside of the church was greatly altered. The chancel was abandoned in 1590, walled off from the rest of the church, and is now ruinous. Sir James Douglas, 1st Earl of Morton, and his wife Joanna, daughter of James I, are buried in the choir and have stone effigies. St Nicholas Buccleuch Church remains one of the two Church of Scotland parish churches in Dalkeith.
The ladies had prepared some Hot Cross Buns. These have a chequered history. These are traditionally eaten hot or toasted on Good Friday, with the cross standing as a symbol of The Crucifixion. They are believed by some to pre-date Christianity, although the first recorded use of the term 'hot cross bun' is not until 1733.
Legend has it that buns marked with a cross were eaten by Saxons in honour of the goddess Eostre (the cross is thought to have symbolised the four quarters of the moon). 'Eostre' is probably the origin of the name 'Easter' too
According to cookery writer Elizabeth David, Protestant English monarchs saw the buns as a dangerous hold-over of Catholic belief in England, being baked from the dough used in making the communion wafer. Protestant England attempted to ban the sale of the buns by bakers but they were too popular, and instead Elizabeth I passed a law permitting bakeries to sell them, but only at Easter and Christmas.
Unfortunately I did not have time to sample any of these delights.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4521874232 - 'The classic Cadbury Creme Egg is manufactured to look like an egg inside and out. For the benefit of any one who has never seen a 171 calorie creme egg, it consists of a thick milk chocolate shell, housing a white and yellow filling made from egg, thick white cream, sugars and other additives. Creme Eggs are a best-selling confectionery item between New Year's Day and Easter in the UK (when sale stops). There are annual sales in excess of 200 million eggs and a brand value estimated of approximately \u00a345 million.
They are produced by Cadbury UK in the United Kingdom, and under licence by The Hershey Company in the United States. The eggs are manufactured at the Bournville factory in Birmingham with around 1.5 million being hatched from the production line each day.
While filled eggs were first manufactured by the Cadbury Brothers in 1923, the Creme Egg in its current form was introduced in 1971.
The Cadbury Creme Egg is manufactured by making a chocolate shell in a half-egg shaped mould, which is then filled with white fondant and a dab of yellow fondant to simulate the yolk. Two mould halves are closed very quickly and cooled to allow the chocolate to set. When the moulds are opened, the eggs fall onto a conveyor which transports them, first to the foiling machines and then to the finished packing.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4521907330 - 'Its that busy time of the year, perhaps more so than Christmas.
According to Christian scripture, Jesus was resurrected from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion. Some Christians celebrate this resurrection on Easter Day or Easter Sunday. For the Father here this can often be combined with the sacrament of confirmation with oil, so a very hectic few days of great spiritual significance.
Easter is a moveable feast, meaning it is not fixed in relation to the civil calendar. A quite complex formula is used to work out when it falls based on the first Sunday after the full moon (the Paschal Full Moon) following the northern hemisphere's vernal equinox. Ecclesiastically, the equinox is reckoned to be on March 21 (regardless of the astronomically correct date), and the 'Full Moon' is not necessarily the astronomically correct date. The date of Easter therefore varies between March 22 and April 25 each year.
Easter is linked to the Jewish Passover by much of its symbolism, as well as by its position in the calendar. This reminds us that these religions (as well as Islam) is linked by common texts and traditions. There is more to link these three faiths than is commonly dug up to divide them.
Peace to you and your family, whatever your belief this Easter.

Torin (Scottish Gaelic: Na Torrain) is a settlement on the island of Skye in Scotland.
The crofting and fishing village lies on the eastern shore of Loch Slapin, 5 miles (7 km) southwest of Broadford (An t-??th Leathann), on the road to Elgol (Ealaghol). There is a mixture of Victorian white-washed cottages and modern flat-pack houses. The village boasts good views of Blaven and Loch Slapin.
Torrin sits on Durness limestone. There is an abundance of trees and varied plant flora, including more than a dozen species of orchids. Much of the area is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation.
There are five working crofts in Torrin with cattle and sheep. The common grazing extends north onto the surrounding red granite hills Beinn Dearg Mh?r (709m) and Beinn Dearg Bheag (584m) and beyond the head of Loch Slapin .

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PKA5M9 - The Liverpool Passion Plays tell the story of the Passion of Christ, including Jesus' arrest, trial and crucifixion.
Using the Cathedral's architecture and artwork as a backdrop, the audience watch the story of Jesus unfold, starting as a young boy, and witnessing his entry into Jerusalem, his betrayal by Judas, and his trial and crucifixion.
The performance will use the vast central space of Liverpool Cathedral as a backdrop with the crucifixion scene taking place on our very own Calvary, high above the audience, on the Dulverton Bridge.
The performance combines music, script and liturgy to demonstrate what Christ's suffering and resurrection means for us today. The performance has been put together by cast, crew and musicians who are volunteers from the cathedral's congregations, choirs and young peoples' groups, and the public.'

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEW1H9 - Murals in Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the region's past and present political and religious divisions.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9DNF - a special treat for Easter - classic Swedish dammsugare. The name means vaccum cleaners, and that's a very strange name for a cookie indeed. The reason? Well, traditionally these are made with lime-green marzipan and chocolate dipped ends, and maybe there was an early vaccum cleaner model that looked like that..? I really don't know, and there doesn't seem to be a simple answer out there, so it'll have to remain a mystery.
And it has many names, dammsugare just happens to be most widely used one. Punschrulle is also quite common, getting it's name from the liqueur used to flavor the filling. Punsch, as I've written before, is made from arrak and very sweet. If you can't find it, try using something like Amaretto or Frangelico instead - won't be the same, but it'll be really good.
