Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E9ANFM - MV Syntan is pictured moored on Beverley Beck in East Yorkshire, a restored historic working barge now preserved by the Beverley Barge Preservation Society. The colourful vessel, with black hull, green upperworks, red trim, ropes, fenders and flag, sits beside the waterway with residential streets and waterside railings in the background, creating a clear documentary image of local canal, river and industrial heritage. The society states that Syntan was formerly operated by Richard Hodgson's Tannery, carrying hides and tanning materials from Hull docks to Beverley Beck, before those materials continued by road to the tannery at Flemingate. Its own history page says the barge was built in 1949 for Richard Hodgson Tanners and formed part of a fleet of 16 barges based on Beverley Beck. The restored vessel now acts as a museum, heritage centre and community resource, helping tell the story of Beverley's working waterways, leather industry and links with the River Hull and Humber network. This image has strong editorial value for features on Beverley history, East Yorkshire tourism, inland waterway preservation, Humber barges, post-war cargo transport, volunteer heritage charities, boat restoration, industrial archaeology, local museums and community-led conservation. It can also illustrate the decline of traditional working waterways, the survival of specialist craft, the former importance of tanneries to Beverley, and the way modest town waterways have been repurposed for heritage, leisure and local identity. The bright daylight, moored barge, calm water and everyday street setting make the photograph useful for travel guides, history articles, museum listings, Heritage Open Days coverage, educational publishing and stock features about preserved working boats. Syntan is more than a decorative canal boat: it is a tangible reminder of the practical cargo movements that once connected Hull docks, Beverley Beck, local factories and wider Yorkshire trade.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJRX - This photograph shows Platform B at the Piccadilly Metrolink stop in Manchester city centre, part of the city's extensive light rail network operated by Manchester Metrolink. The bright yellow platform signage clearly indicates eastbound services to Ashton under Lyne and the Etihad Campus, two key destinations on the eastern side of Greater Manchester.
The image highlights the clean, functional design of the Metrolink system, with high contrast signage, tactile surfaces, and yellow safety rails supporting accessibility and passenger safety. Piccadilly Metrolink forms a major interchange point, linking tram services with Manchester Piccadilly railway station, buses, and wider city centre travel routes.
Metrolink plays a central role in Manchester's public transport network, supporting daily commuting, leisure travel, and access to major employment, residential, and sporting destinations. The reference to the Etihad Campus underlines the system's importance during major events, including football matches and concerts, while the Ashton under Lyne route serves a mix of town centre, residential, and commercial areas.
Taken indoors under artificial lighting, the photograph functions as both a documentary record of modern urban transport infrastructure and a practical illustration of wayfinding design in a busy metropolitan transit system. It reflects Manchester's long term investment in light rail as a sustainable alternative to private car use and a core element of city region connectivity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8E1EN - Close-up view of a Warrington Central railway station nameboard on a platform beneath the station canopy, showing blue and white National Rail style signage against brickwork, metal roof structure and historic railway architecture. Warrington Central is one of the main railway stations serving Warrington in Cheshire, located on Winwick Street near the northern edge of the town centre. National Rail identifies the station code as WAC, gives the address as Winwick Street, Warrington, Cheshire WA2 7TT, and lists the station as managed by Northern. The station is used by passengers travelling on the Liverpool to Manchester corridor and forms an important local public transport link for commuters, students, shoppers, visitors and regional rail users across North West England. The photograph is useful for editorial coverage of Warrington transport, Northern rail services, railway commuting, public transport infrastructure, town centre connectivity, National Rail signage, platform environments and regional rail travel. It can also support features on railway heritage, as Warrington Central opened in the 1870s on the Cheshire Lines Committee route, with the Central suffix added shortly afterwards. The station's surviving brickwork, platform canopy and traditional urban railway setting help connect current train travel with Victorian-era railway expansion and the historic competition between routes serving Manchester, Liverpool, Cheshire and Lancashire. The image has practical stock value for local news, travel guides, transport reporting, rail disruption stories, station accessibility, timetable changes, sustainable travel, public investment, commuter behaviour and comparisons with Warrington Bank Quay. It also works as a clean generic but identifiable image for articles about rail services in Warrington, Northern-managed stations, station facilities, ticket offices, step-free access, regional mobility and the everyday experience of using Britain's railway network.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG8YFD - View looking east along the River Irwell in Manchester city centre, showing the Novella apartment buildings and Aviva Studios, the home of Factory International. This stretch of river marks the historic boundary between Manchester and Salford and has become a focal point for large-scale regeneration and high-density urban development.
The Novella residential towers form part of a wave of new riverside housing, reflecting Manchester's rapid growth as a city for urban living, inward investment, and city-centre population expansion. The buildings' contemporary design and height contribute to a changing skyline dominated by modern apartment blocks and mixed-use developments.
To the right of the frame stands Aviva Studios, a landmark cultural venue designed to host large-scale performance, exhibitions, and live events. The building anchors the St John's regeneration area, a former industrial and broadcasting district that once housed Granada Television and associated studios.
Construction cranes and newly completed towers underline the pace of transformation along the River Irwell corridor, where former warehouses and brownfield sites have been replaced by residential, commercial, and cultural infrastructure. Photographed in daylight under a blue sky with scattered cloud, the image documents the continuing reshaping of Manchester as a post-industrial city driven by culture-led regeneration, high-rise living, and riverside redevelopment.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39XXB - Brick Lane (Bengali: ব্রিক লেন) is a famous street in the East End of London, in the borough of Tower Hamlets. It runs from Swanfield Street in Bethnal Green in the north, crosses the Bethnal Green Road before reaching the busiest, most commercially active part which runs through Spitalfields, or along its eastern edge. Brick Lane's southern end is connected to Whitechapel High Street by a short extension called Osborn Street.
Today, it is the heart of the country's Bangladeshi community with the vicinity known to some as Banglatown. It is famous for its many curry houses
The street was formerly known as Whitechapel Lane, and wound through fields. It derives its current name from brick and tile manufacture started in the 15th century, which used the local brick earth deposits
In the 19th century, Irish people and Ashkenazi Jews immigrated to the area. Jewish immigration continued into the early 20th century.
In the 20th century the Brick Lane area was important in the second wave of development of Anglo-Indian cuisine, as families from countries such as Bangladesh (mainly the Greater Sylhet region) migrated to London to look for work. Some curry houses of Brick Lane do not sell alcoholic beverages, for most are owned by Muslims. According to EasyJet Traveller magazine, the top three curry houses on Brick Lane in 2021 are Aladin, Sheba and City Spice.
Bengalis in the United Kingdom settled in big cities with industrial employment. In London, many settled in the East End. For centuries the East End has been the first port of call for many immigrants working in the docks and shipping from Chittagong port in Bengal

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39XY7 - This is the end of a second decade making street art for Dr.D ( aka @Subvertiser ) and the second solo show. There won't be another one for ten years. 'Panicky in the UK' is a collection of the past 20 years of Dr.D's work.
About
'Panicky in the UK' BSMT presents a subversion art exhibition by Dr.D (aka Subvertiser) with Benjamin Irritant and Lazy Edwin.
This is the end of a second decade making street art for Dr.D ( aka @Subvertiser ) and the second solo show. There won't be another one for ten years. 'Panicky in the UK' is a collection of the past 20 years of Dr.D's work that takes like a sampler from the signage of the street and remixes it with the misheard and repurposed phrases of everyday conversations.
Dr. D aka Subvertiserhas been like the window wiper to the rain of advertising we suffer daily. His bus stop and billboard interventions have forced us to stop, recalibrate and question what we have seen and believed for twenty years! Dr. D will be showing alongside two contemporaries, Benjamin Irritant and Edwin who also work with humorous word play and anti-establishment rhetoric while having a keen eye on the climate emergency. Benjamin Irritant stabs at capitalism with surreal collage and Edwin turns street art on it's head, refusing to beautify thereby pushing against the commercial machine that Public Art has become.
This isn't just decoration chasing likes and pound notes. This is genuine street art. To make the show have some worth beyond just pictures on walls, part of the show will be fund raising for a food bank in the 'Panic Buy'.
BSMT has already raised funds for Extinction Rebellion and continuing in this environmentally sound consciousness, work in the show has been produced using repurposed and upcycled consumer goods and advertising detournement.
'Panicky in the UK' opens at BSMT Urban Art gallery with a private view April 2nd and will run until April 19th.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39XYA - Shoreditch High Street is a London Overground station located on Bethnal Green Road in Shoreditch in East London. It is served by the East London Line between Whitechapel and Hoxton with services running either to Dalston Junction, Highbury & Islington or New Cross, New Cross Gate, West Croydon, Crystal Palace, and is in Travelcard Zone 1.
Entrance to the station
The station officially opened to the public on 27 April 2010 and replaced nearby tube station Shoreditch, which was directly to the east and closed in 2006.
History
On the 1994 planning version of the underground map, the station was called 'Bishopsgate'.
In May 2008 Abdal Ullah, a Tower Hamlets London Borough Councillor, called for the new station to be renamed Banglatown, claiming this would better reflect the area in which it will stand, being a centre of the Bangladeshi community. However Transport for London noted that changing the name would cost £2 million and cause confusion. Councillor Ullah had previously campaigned to change the name of Aldgate East Underground station to Brick Lane
The station was built on the former site of the Eastern Counties Railway's Shoreditch station, built in 1840. The original station was later renamed Bishopsgate and converted for use as a goods yard. It was destroyed by fire in 1964 and remained derelict until being demolished in 200304, with the exception of a number of Grade II listed structures: ornamental gates on Shoreditch High Street and the remaining 850 feet (260 m) of the Braithwaite Viaduct, one of the oldest railway structures in the world and the second-oldest in London, designed by John Braithwaite.
The present station is built on upright supports as a viaduct, being fully enclosed in a concrete box structure. This is so future building works on the remainder of the Bishopsgate site can be undertaken keeping the station operational. Future buildings have the option of being constructed over the station.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMPF - This image shows a street name sign for Vinegar Alley in Walthamstow, East London, clearly displaying the E17 postcode. The sign is mounted on a metal pole and set against a backdrop of leafy green trees, giving a strong sense of place within a residential urban neighbourhood.
Street signs such as this are widely used in editorial, travel and lifestyle imagery to represent location, navigation and local identity. The distinctive street name adds character and curiosity, making the image suitable for illustrating themes of London neighbourhoods, wayfinding, urban exploration and everyday street detail.
Photographed in daylight during the warmer months, the surrounding foliage suggests a calm, well-established residential area. The simple composition focuses attention on the typography and wording of the sign, allowing it to be used as a contextual image for stories about place, community, property, local history or urban living in East London.
Vinegar Alley forms part of the wider streetscape of Walthamstow, an area that has become increasingly popular for its village atmosphere, green spaces and strong sense of local character within the capital.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMPN - This image shows St Mary's Church, the historic parish church of Walthamstow, located at Church End in East London. The church is set within a landscaped churchyard containing gravestones, flowers and mature trees, creating a calm green space within the surrounding urban area.
St Mary's has medieval origins and has been altered and extended over centuries, resulting in a distinctive exterior that reflects different periods of church architecture. The tower with its clock face forms a prominent local landmark, while the long nave and arched windows emphasise the building's role as a place of worship and community gathering.
The photograph was taken in daylight during the warmer months, with trees in leaf and wildflowers visible in the churchyard, adding seasonal colour and softness to the scene. The combination of historic stonework and greenery makes the location attractive to visitors, walkers and those interested in London's religious and architectural heritage.
St Mary's Church remains an important focal point in Walthamstow Village, illustrating the area's transformation from a rural settlement to part of the modern capital, while preserving a strong sense of continuity, local identity and spiritual history.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMR1 - This image shows the Vestry House, widely regarded as the oldest surviving domestic building in Walthamstow, East London. Dating from the fifteenth century, the house is a rare example of medieval timber framed architecture in the area and today forms part of the Vestry House Museum, located close to St Mary's Church in Walthamstow Village.
The building features characteristic black and white timber framing, a steeply pitched tiled roof and traditional construction methods associated with Tudor period domestic buildings. Over the centuries, the Vestry House has served a number of civic and community functions, including use as a meeting place for local parish affairs, before being preserved as a museum dedicated to local history.
In the foreground, a bright red Royal Mail pillar box provides a strong visual contrast with the muted tones of the historic structure, highlighting the coexistence of everyday modern street life with London's deep architectural past. The image was taken in daylight under bright but overcast conditions, allowing clear visibility of the building's materials, textures and surrounding streetscape.
The Vestry House remains an important heritage landmark in Walthamstow, offering a tangible link to the area's medieval origins and its gradual transformation from rural village to part of the modern city of London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMR2 - This image shows the exterior of The Nags Head public house, located on Orford Road in Walthamstow, East London. The traditional neighbourhood pub is pictured in bright summer daylight, with outdoor tables and chairs arranged along the pavement, creating an informal street dining and socialising space.
The building frontage features colourful painted woodwork and large windows opening onto the street, typical of London public houses that combine food, drink and community use. Parasols and planted areas soften the streetscape, while the quiet residential setting reflects the village atmosphere of Walthamstow, a popular destination for local residents and visitors alike.
Outdoor seating areas such as this have become an important part of urban hospitality, particularly during warmer months, supporting casual dining, social interaction and neighbourhood life. The image conveys a relaxed, welcoming environment and is suitable for illustrating themes of leisure, travel, lifestyle, food and drink, and contemporary urban living in London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDTJ - This image shows the entrance to Greenwich Pier, a key River Thames passenger pier located in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, South East London. The prominent blue signage identifies the pier as part of London's integrated river transport network, used by both commuters and visitors travelling along the Thames.
Greenwich Pier is served by TfL River Bus services operated by Thames Clippers, linking Greenwich with central London destinations such as Westminster, Embankment, and Canary Wharf. River transport plays an increasingly important role in London's public transport system, offering an alternative to road and rail travel while also supporting tourism along the Thames corridor.
The modern pier building features a curved glass frontage, with people visible entering and exiting the terminal. Pedestrians in the foreground highlight the pier's dual role as both a commuter hub and a gateway for tourists visiting nearby attractions including Greenwich town centre, the Cutty Sark, and the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site.
Photographed in daylight under clear skies, the image captures the everyday activity of London's river transport infrastructure. It is well suited to editorial use covering public transport, sustainable travel, London tourism, riverside development, urban mobility, and life along the River Thames

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDYG - The Greenwich Foot Tunnel crosses beneath the River Thames in East London, linking Greenwich (Royal Borough of Greenwich) on the south bank with Millwall (London Borough of Tower Hamlets) on the north. Approximately 4,000 people use the tunnel each day. It opened in 1902.
The tunnel was designed by civil engineer Sir Alexander Binnie for London County Council and constructed by contractor John Cochrane & Co. The project started in June 1899 and the tunnel opened on 4 August 1902. The tunnel replaced an expensive and sometimes unreliable ferry service allowing workers living south of the Thames to reach their workplaces in the London docks and shipyards in or near the Isle of Dogs. Its creation owed much to the efforts of working-class politician Will Crooks, who had worked in the docks and, after chairing the LCC's Bridges Committee responsible for the tunnel, later served as Labour MP for Woolwich.
The section of the tunnel that was repaired following damage during World War II
The entrance shafts at both ends are beneath glazed domes. Lifts, installed in 1904, were upgraded in 1992 and again in 2012, and helical staircases allow pedestrians to access the tile-lined tunnel, which slopes gently from both sides down to a midway lowpoint beneath the river. The cast-iron tunnel is 1,215 feet (370.2 m) long, 50 feet (15.2 m) deep and has an internal diameter of about 9 feet (2.74 m). The cast-iron rings are coated with concrete and surfaced with some 200,000 white glazed tiles. The northern end was damaged by bombs during the Second World War and repairs included a thick steel and concrete inner lining that substantially reduces the diameter for a short distance. The northern shaft staircase has 87 steps
the southern one has 100.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RA236D - Malcolm Robert Andrew McLaren (22 January 1946 8 April 2010) was an English impresario, visual artist, singer, songwriter, musician, clothes designer and boutique owner, who combined these activities in an inventive and provocative way. He promoted and managed the bands New York Dolls, the Sex Pistols, and Bow Wow Wow, and recorded music in his own name.
McLaren was brought up by his grandmother after his father, Peter, left the family home, and attended a number of British art colleges and adopted the stance of the social rebel in the style of French revolutionaries the Situationists. McLaren realised that a new protest style was needed for the 1970s,[citation needed] and involved himself in the punk movement, for which he supplied fashions from the Chelsea boutique SEX, which he operated with girlfriend Vivienne Westwood.
After a period advising the New York Dolls in the U.S., McLaren managed the Sex Pistols, for which he recruited the nihilistic frontman Johnny Rotten. The issue of a controversial record, God Save the Queen, satirising the Queen's Jubilee in 1977, was typical of McLaren's shock tactics, and he gained publicity by being arrested after a promotional boat trip outside the Houses of Parliament.
From 1974, McLaren had advised SEX customers Paul Cook and Steve Jones on their musical aspirations, having proposed that one of his shop assistants, Glen Matlock, join them as the bass-player in a group McLaren named Kutie Jones and his Sex Pistols. In the summer of 1975, McLaren ejected the bespectacled guitarist/singer Wally Nightingale from the line-up because he lacked visual appeal.
McLaren's one-time associate Bernie Rhodes (later manager of the Clash) has claimed he spotted a new frontman in another customer, John Lydon, then sporting green hair and torn clothes with the words I hate scribbled on his Pink Floyd T-shirt. Lydon, dubbed Johnny Rotten, joined and McLaren shortened the name to Sex Pistols

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RA238A - Malcolm Robert Andrew McLaren (22 January 1946 8 April 2010) was an English impresario, visual artist, singer, songwriter, musician, clothes designer and boutique owner, who combined these activities in an inventive and provocative way.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RADRPX - Patrick Joseph Caulfield, CBE, RA (29 January 1936 29 September 2005), was an English painter and printmaker known for his bold canvases, which often incorporated elements of photorealism within a pared-down scene. Examples of his work are Pottery and Still Life Ingredients.
Patrick Joseph Caulfield was born on 29 January 1936 at 17 All Saints Road, Acton, west London. During the second world war Caulfield's family returned to Bolton in 1945
Inspired by the 1952 film Moulin Rouge about the artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, he spent his free time attending evening classes at Harrow School of Art (now part of the University of Westminster)
Patrick Caulfield studied at Chelsea School of Art from 1956 to 1960, and during this time he won two prizes which funded a trip he made to Greece and Crete upon graduation. The visit to the island proved important, with Caulfield finding inspiration in the Minoan frescoes and the bright, hard colours on Crete. One of his greatest friends was the abstract painter John Hoyland, whom he first met at the Young Contemporaries exhibition in 1959. Progressing to the Royal College of Art from 1960 to 1963, his contemporaries included David Hockney and Allen Jones. He taught at Chelsea School of Art from 196371. In 1964, he exhibited at the New Generation show at London's Whitechapel Gallery, which resulted in him being associated with the pop art movement. This was a label Caulfield was opposed to throughout his career, seeing himself rather as a 'formal' artist
From the mid-1970s he incorporated more detailed, realistic elements into his work
After Lunch (1975) is an early example. Still-life: Autumn Fashion (1978) contains a variety of styles some objects have heavy black outlines and flat colour, but a bowl of oysters is depicted more realistically and other areas are executed with looser brushwork. Caulfield later returned to his earlier, more stripped-down style of painting

It is located on the southern route of the Liverpool to Manchester Lines (the former Cheshire Lines Committee route between Liverpool and Manchester), being situated approximately halfway between the two cities.
The second station in Warrington is Warrington Bank Quay, which accommodates electrified lines on the West Coast Main Line with express services to London Euston, Birmingham New Street and Scotland, and also an electrified service to Liverpool Lime Street. The third is Warrington West, which has much of the same services as Central, and opened in 2019.
The station opened as Warrington on 1 August 1873 when the Cheshire Lines Committee opened the line between Glazebrook and Cressington & Grassendale to passengers. The suffix Central was added in 1875

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PHEK7Y - The eight Warrington ship canal bridges can be seen keeping a silent watch over the town, with the complete straightness of the waterway enabling the onlooker to see every bridge from the Thelwall Viaduct to Moore Lane Swing Bridge.
And it is these bridges that make this canal both unique and ground breaking.
The Cantilever itself weighs about 783 tonnes and the 206ft span carries the roadway 75 feet above the water level.
It was designed to provide a constant route to Latchford Train Station free from the interference and traffic stoppages associated with the turning of the nearby swing bridges.
The 36-mile canal opened on May 21, 1894, in a bid to divert trade from Liverpool docks into the centre of Manchester.
Dubbed The Big Ditch', more than 54million cubic yards of material were excavated for the canal, including 12million cubic yards of sandstone rock.
Terraced houses were set up nearby for workers, the likes of which can be seen on the estates off Knutsford Road in Latchford.
Meanwhile, bigwigs of the Manchester Ship Canal Company set up home in grand villas, most of which still exist in lower Grappenhall and Stockton Heath.
Work was twice delayed by water flooding into sections of the excavation, in November 1890 and December 1891.
However, the canal was finally completely filled with water in November 1893.
It opened to its first traffic on January 1, 1894. Today it is still a seaway for 1,500 ships annually carrying 6.5million tonnes of cargo.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M4MPYR - Hackney Town Hall is a municipal building in Hackney, London. The town hall, which is the headquarters of Hackney London Borough Council, is a Grade II listed building
The site selected for current facility, the third town hall, was just to the west of the second town hall on land which had previously been occupied by residential properties. The foundation stone was laid by the Minister of Health, Sir Hilton Young, on 22 October 1934. It was designed by Lanchester and Lodge in the Art Deco style and officially opened by the Chairman of London County Council, Lord Snell, on 3 July 1937. The design involved a symmetrical main frontage with thirteen bays facing onto Mare Street
the central section of five bays featured a doorway flanked by windows on either side on the ground floor
there were five round headed widows leading onto a balcony on the first floor with a clock and the borough coat of arms above. The principal rooms were the council chamber, the mayor's parlour, the members' room and an assembly hall running along the rear of the building.
The building continued to be the local seat of government after the formation of the enlarged London Borough of Hackney in 1965. However, many of the council officers and their departments, who had been located in disparate departments around the area, moved to the new Hackney Service Centre in Hillman Street, designed by Hopkins Architects, in 2010.
An extensive refurbishment of the town Hall to the designs of Hawkins\Brown was completed in 2017

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBGX - Matalan is a British fashion and homeware retailer based in Knowsley, Merseyside. It was established by John Hargreaves in 1985, and is still owned by the Hargreaves family. As of 2020, the company employed over 13,000, and had 230 stores in the United Kingdom, together with franchise stores in the Middle East.
John Hargreaves opened the first Matalan store in 1985 at Bamber Bridge, near Preston, Lancashire. There were fifty stores by 1995, and in 1997, the company moved its headquarters from Preston to Skelmersdale, also in Lancashire. The company was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1998, but taken private again by the Hargreaves family in October 2006.
During 2009, John Hargreaves sought to sell off Matalan, but by February 2010, had failed to find buyers willing to meet the £1.5 billion price.[4] Jason Hargreaves was appointed managing director in July 2013. The headquarters moved to a purpose built site at Knowsley, Merseyside in 2014. The company won approval for this scheme in October 2012.
Controversy
Matalan was among the companies who sourced clothes from the Rana Plaza factory in Bangladesh which collapsed, killing 1,134, in April 2013. In July 2014, they were the focus of a campaign by 38 Degrees and Labour Behind the Label, for failing to contribute to the official compensation fund coordinated by the ILO. This was in contrast to some of their main competitors, such as Primark who contributed $9 million.
After pressure, they announced that they would contribute an undisclosed amount. It was later revealed that they had paid £60,000 into the fund, which labour rights campaigns challenged as being an insufficient amount compared with other retailers.
Structure
Matalan Retail Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Missouri Topco Limited, a holding company which is based in Guernsey, and is controlled by the Hargreaves family.
In the Middle East, the Matalan brand is franchised to BTC Fashion General Trading, based in Qatar. BTC have stores in

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M7JH47 - The Pittville Pump Room was the last and largest of the spa buildings to be built in Cheltenham.
The benefits of Cheltenham's mineral waters had been recognised since 1716, but not until after the arrival of Henry Skillicorne in 1738 did serious exploitation of their potential as an attraction begin. After the visit to Cheltenham in 1788 of King George III, the town became increasingly fashionable, and wells were opened up at several points round the town. Pittville, the vision of Joseph Pitt, was a planned 'new town' development of the 1820s, in which the centre-piece was (and remains) a pump-room where the waters of one of the more northerly wells could be taken.
The Pump
The Pump Room was built by the architect John Forbes between 1825 and 1830. It is a Grade I listed building standing at the northern end of Pittville Lawn with landscaped grounds running down to a lake. The building contains the original Pump, made of marble and scagliola, to which the waters are today fed by electric pumping.
The building has a colonnade of Ionic columns
the interior houses a ballroom on its ground floor. Further Ionic columns support a gallery under a dome from which music might be played
on upper floors there were a billiard room, library and reading room. Above the colonnade are three statues, by Lucius Gahagen, erected in 1827, of the goddess Hygieia, Aesculapius and Hippocrates.
The Pump Room and its grounds were managed during the 19th century by a succession of lessees, who offered the typical fare of pleasure gardens including menageries, exhibitions and balloon ascents. However the concession did not prove lucrative. Eventually Pitt himself went bankrupt and in 1890 the Room and the grounds passed into the ownership of the town council.
They are now part of The Cheltenham Trust, a charity which also manages the Cheltenham Town Hall, the Wilson Art Gallery & Museum, the Prince of Wales Stadium and Leisure @ - plus the town's Tourist Information Centre

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JC40WD - Climbing Wall, Barry Island Eastern Promenade
If you were to fly into Cardiff Airport these days on a clear day and look towards Barry Island, you would see the words YNYS Y BARRI BARRY ISLAND writ large on the wall along the Eastern Promenade. The large scale letters have been formed from colourful, quirky climbing holds and other acrylic shapes of buckets, trains, flip flops, ice cream cones, anchors, fish
The 2014 Celfwaith commission to create a climbing wall was part of a major refurbishment scheme on Barry Island, including structural works to the Eastern end of the Promenade
Early in 2014 Celfwaith appointed Becky Adams to collaborate on consultation meetings and workshops with youth groups at Area 41 and Barry Island, pupils at Barry Island Primary School, and the Barry Island Historical Society.
Gordon Young was appointed to create the climbing wall and had previous experience of creating climbing and bouldering structures in Blackpool. However, his proposal for Barry Island was completely different and captured the fun, colourful and tongue-in-cheek character of the place popularised by Gavin & Stacey.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AXKD3Y - GV II Warehouse, late 1920s, of stock brick with compostone dressing, built in the giant arcaded and pilastered warehouse tradition.
EXTERIOR: The street elevation, of 15 bays, has a deep crowning entablature with moulded cornice and parapet. A panel, above Warehouses A and B, rises from the parapet announcing 'Gun Wharves' in a late C20 script. 124-126 Wapping High Street (Warehouses C and D) have a deep granite plinth and granite faced reveals to ground floor openings and waggon entrances. Some windows have brick 'mullions' and there are three loading bays. 128-130 (Warehouses A and B) are more ornate and the bays are treated as a giant arcade with deep plat band beneath first floor and flush band level with capitals of pilasters. Again, there are three loading bays. Paired iron frame with windows with mullions and lintels. H-section girder hoists
housings for roof mounted cranes. To the riverside, the flat elevation of 13 bays overall is treated as one long giant arcade through 6 storeys with channelled rustication to ground floor piers. The pilasters, coupled in some cases, have fluted necking. There is a deep entablature with moulded cornice, surmounted by name plaques. Three wall-mounted, lattice, jibbed cranes with operating cabins, hydraulic powered. The warehouses were converted to residential use which involved replacement of the windows and the insertion of balconies in the loading bays.
HISTORY: Wapping developed along the northern embankment of the Thames, hemmed in by the river to the south and what was Wapping Marsh to the north, creating a peculiarly narrow and constricted shape, consisting of the axis of Wapping High Street and some north-south side streets. The building of the London Docks to the north and west of the High Street in the 1805 transformed the area from residential to docklands and the population declined as houses were destroyed to build giant warehouses along the riverfront.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AYHJHA - The Marine Policing Unit (MPU), formerly known as Thames Division, is a Met Operations branch of London's Metropolitan Police Service. Its forerunner, the Marine Police Force, was England's first recognised preventive police unit.
The MPU is headquartered on Wapping High Street, in the east of the city, from where it operates a fleet of vessels responsible for policing the River Thames within Greater London.
Today the MPU is responsible for waterborne policing of the 47 miles of the Thames between Hampton Court in the west and Dartford Creek in the east. Above Hampton Court, Surrey Police have responsibility for policing but a launch is supplied by the Environment Agency. Below Dartford Creek, responsibility lies with both Essex Police and Kent Police, who have combined forces and formed a joint marine unit, with Kent based at Sheerness and Essex based at Burnham-on-Crouch.
Wapping police station (left) and pier
Based at a police station on Wapping High Street and with 22 vessels at its disposal, the MPU also provides support to the rest of the Metropolitan Police and to the City of London Police when dealing with incidents in or around any waterway in London. A specialist underwater and confined-spaces search team carries out searches throughout the Metropolitan Police District. The unit also has 24 officers who are trained in rope access techniques and trained to carry out searches and counter demonstrator operations at height.

In August 1998, Tesco announced a partnership with Esso, opening chains of Tesco Express stores located within forecourts, which continues today. In February 2000, the two companies were opening one new store a month, creating 4,000 jobs.
In Tampere, Finland (2007)
Esso Blue was the brand name of Esso's paraffin oil (kerosene) for domestic heaters in countries such as the United Kingdom. Their television advertising song from the 1950s, through to the 1970s, was the famous Bom, Bom, Bom, Bom, Esso Blue!
Esso traded in Northern Ireland up until the early 2000s. Their forecourts were re-branded as Maxol and some remained private.
45 of Euro Garages' forecourts were bought from Esso in 2013, and are operated under the Esso brand. They plan to roll out partner brands such as Starbucks and Spar, replacing the Esso branded shops.
Shop and Drive is an Esso branded convenience store operated in some stations, although many of their locations have franchised shops such as Nisa.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ABY9DF - The Theatre Royal Stratford East is a large theatre in Stratford in the London Borough of Newham. Since 1953, it has been the home of the Theatre Workshop company, famously associated with Joan Littlewood.
The theatre was designed by architect James George Buckle, who was commissioned by the actor-manager Charles Dillon in 1884. It is the architect's only surviving work, built on the site of a wheelwright's shop on Salway Road, close to the junction with Angel Lane. It opened on 17 December 1884 with a revival of Richelieu by Edward Bulwer-Lytton. Two years later, Dillon sold it to Albert O'Leary Fredericks, his sister's brother-in-law and one of the original backers of the scheme.
In 1887 the theatre was renamed Theatre Royal and Palace of Varieties and side extensions were added in 1887. The stage was enlarged in 1891, by the original architect. In 1902, Frank Matcham undertook minor improvements to the entrance and foyer. The Theatre reverted to its Theatre Royal Stratford East ('TRSE') name in 1914. A fire on the stage on August Bank Holiday Monday of 1921 did considerable damage to the rear of the theatre. Thankfully the fire happened at midnight, with the safety curtain lowered, saving the auditorium which retains many of its original features to this day. The theatre was closed until January 1922
The theatre came under threat with the construction of the Stratford shopping centre in the 1970s, but was saved by a public campaign and protected in June 1972 by English Heritage with a Grade II* listing. Money remained short, and the manager, Gerry Raffles, only managed redecoration and replacements as cash became available. In 2001, following a successful Heritage Lottery Fund bid, all of the theatre's front of house and backstage areas were refurbished as part of the Olympiad's Stratford Cultural Quarter project

Our Short Story Prize was launched in 2019. Our aim is to celebrate short stories, to give new writers the chance to be published, and to offer some financial assistance to write. Each year we publish an anthology of the twelve longlisted stories. We're on the lookout for new, exciting, and diverse voices
Brick Lane Bookshop was originally part of The Tower Hamlets Arts Project (THAP), which was formed in the 1970s out of a protest.
In 1974, Thames Television launched the Eyesights' scheme. With money channelled through the Great London Arts Association, the idea was that professional artists would be commissioned to create giant posters for display in the borough with over half the amount being earmarked for the hire of hoardings alone.
The Eyesights' scheme was inevitably renamed Eyesore' by local people already involved in arts and community activities who thought that the money could be put to much better use. A crowded public meeting in February 1975 called for an alternative, bolder plan, bringing together existing and fledgling arts activities under a coordinating body to be called the Tower Hamlets Arts Project (THAP).
Rather than it being about artists coming into the area, it should be about those already here! And after some initial eye-rolling, Thames Television eventually saw the sense of the argument. The Borough Council assisted by appointing an Arts Officer, Phil Shepherd, to support the new scheme. THAP was launched at the start of 1976 and celebrated its achievements a year later with a month-long Big Show' at the Whitechapel Art Gallery. Critics were bemused at finding this international venue, which had presented the works of Picasso and Frida Kahlo, awash with East End poets, Stepney filmmakers, amateur rock bands, truanting schoolkids, improvised theatre shows and messy experiments in silkscreen printing.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RPGERJ - The 2002 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XVII Commonwealth Games and commonly known as Manchester 2002 were held in Manchester, England, from 25 July to 4 August 2002. The 2002 Games were to be hosted in the United Kingdom to coincide with the Golden Jubilee of Elizabeth II, head of the Commonwealth, and Manchester was selected for the 2002 Games ahead of London. The XVII Commonwealth Games was, prior to the 2012 Summer Olympics, the largest multi-sport event ever to be held in the UK, eclipsing the London 1948 Summer Olympics in numbers of teams and athletes participating. In terms of sports and events, the 2002 Games were the largest Commonwealth Games in history featuring 281 events across 17 sports.
The Games were considered a success for the host city, providing an event to display how Manchester had changed following the 1996 bombing. The Games formed the catalyst for the widespread regeneration and heavy development of Manchester, and bolstered its reputation as a European and global city internationally. Rapid economic development and continued urban regeneration of the now post-industrial Manchester continued after the Games which helped cement its place as one of the principal cultural cities in the United Kingdom.
The opening and closing ceremonies, the athletic and the rugby sevens events were held at the City of Manchester Stadium, which was purpose built for the Games. Unusually for a large multi-sport eventthe second-largest competition by number of countries and athletes participatingthe shooting events were held in the National Shooting Centre in Bisley, Surrey, some 200 miles (322 km) from the main focus of the Games in Manchester. Seventy-two nations competed in 14 individual sports and 3 team sports events.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F80GBP - Manchester United Football Club is a professional football club based in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England, that currently competes in the Premier League, the top flight of English football. Founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, the club changed its name to Manchester United in 1902 and moved to Old Trafford in 1910.
Manchester United have won 20 league titles, the most of any English club, 11 FA Cups, four League Cups and a record 20 FA Community Shields. The club has also won three European Cups, one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, one UEFA Super Cup, one Intercontinental Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup. In 199899, the club became the first in the history of English football to achieve the treble of the Premier League, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League.
The 1958 Munich air disaster claimed the lives of eight players. In 1968, under the management of Matt Busby, Manchester United became the first English football club to win the European Cup. Alex Ferguson won 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles, 5 FA Cups and 2 UEFA Champions Leagues, between 1986 and 2013, when he announced his retirement. Louis van Gaal is the club's current manager after Ferguson's successor David Moyes was sacked after only 10 months in charge.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY3RJW - East Ilsley
Sheltered in a dip in the downs just off the A34 Southampton to Oxford and the Midlands trunk road is the ancient village of East Ilsley. The A34, once an important coaching route, originally passed right through the village and just to the north of the village is the ancient Ridgeway. So East Ilsley, once also known as Market Ilsley or Chipping Ilsley, had a prominent and important position.
The origin of the name is unclear. Originally Hildeslei, It could mean place of conflict or battle field and it is known that Alfred defeated the Danes in the Battle of Ashdown which took place nearby. Alternatively it could mean a woodland clearing of a man called Hild, and this meaning is supported by at least two sources. The nearby village of West Ilsley was originally a hamlet within the parish of East Ilsley.
East Ilsley once held an important weekly sheep market and had claims on the title of sheep farming capital of England. In the 19th century the sheep market was second in size only to Smithfield market in London. The origins of the then small East Ilsley sheep fair can be traced back to the 13th century, but from from the 17th century a weekly sheep market was held throughout spring and summer. As many as eighty thousand sheep could be auctioned in a single day which demonstrates the importance of the fair. The last fair was held in 1934 and a plaque in the centre of the village records this event.
Not surprisingly East Ilsley has had many inns and pubs. In the 19th century twelve were known to exist serving the coaching route from Oxford to Newbury and the sheep fairs, and at the beginning of the last century there were still eight. More surprisingly perhaps, when many villages have lost their village pubs, there are still two public houses in the centre of the village.
Standing prominently on a hill away from the centre of the village is the village church, St. Mary's, parts of which date from the 12th century.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F89PGW - Edinburgh Waverley railway station, often simply referred to as Waverley, or as Edinburgh, is the main railway station in the Scottish capital Edinburgh. Covering an area of over 25 acres (10 ha) in the centre of the city, it is the second-largest main line railway station in the United Kingdom in terms of area, the largest being London Waterloo
and is both a terminal station and a through station, in contrast to the majority of central London stations. Ticketing generally regards Waverley and Haymarket as interchangeable subject to operator validity.
It is one of 19 stations managed by Network Rail. It is the northern limit of the East Coast Main Line to Network Rail infrastructure definition, but through-services operate to Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen, Perth and Inverness.
There are many local services operated by ScotRail, including the four routes to Glasgow, the Fife Circle, and services to Stirling/Dunblane/Alloa/North Berwick/Dunbar, and the station is the terminus of the Edinburgh leg of the West Coast Main Line served by Virgin Trains and First TransPennine Express. Long distance inter-city trains to England are operated by CrossCountry to destinations such as York, Leeds, Sheffield, Derby, Birmingham New Street, Bristol Temple Meads, Exeter St Davids and Plymouth.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EBFWFC - The AEC Routemaster is a double-decker bus designed by London Transport and built by the Associated Equipment Company (AEC) and Park Royal Vehicles. The first prototype was completed in September 1954 and the last one was delivered in 1968. The layout of the vehicle was traditional for the time, with a half-cab, front-mounted engine and open rear platform, although the coach version was fitted with rear platform doors.
Forward entrance vehicles with platform doors were also produced as was a unique front-entrance prototype with the engine mounted transversely at the rear. The first Routemasters entered service with London Transport in February 1956 and the last were withdrawn from regular service in December 2005, although one heritage route is still operated by Routemasters in central London.
Most Routemasters were built for London Transport, although small numbers were built for British European Airways and the Northern General Transport Company. A total of 2,876 Routemasters were built with 1,280 still in existence.
A pioneering design, the Routemaster outlasted several of its replacement types in London, survived the privatisation of the former London Transport bus operators and was used by other operators around the UK. In modern UK public transport bus operation, the old-fashioned features of the standard Routemaster were both praised and criticised. The open platform, while exposed to the elements, allowed boarding and alighting in places other than official stops
and the presence of a conductor allowed minimal boarding time and optimal security, but with greater labour costs.
Despite the retirement of the original version, the Routemaster has retained iconic status, and is considered a British cultural icon. In the late 2000s work began on a New Routemaster bus inspired by the Routemaster's traditional design, which entered service in February 2012

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy E6HY5B - Metrolink is a light rail system in Greater Manchester, England. The network consists of six lines which radiate from Manchester city centre and terminate at Altrincham, Ashton-under-Lyne, Bury, Didsbury, Eccles, and Rochdale. The system is owned by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and operated and maintained under contract by RATP In 2013/14, 29.2 million passenger journeys were made on the system, also known as Manchester Metrolink.
A light rail system for Greater Manchester was borne of Greater Manchester County Council's obligations to provide an integrated and efficient system of public transport under its structure plan and the Transport Act 1968. Greater Manchester's public transport network suffered from poor northsouth connections, exacerbated by the location of Manchester's main railway stations, Piccadilly and Victoria, which were unconnected and lay at opposite edges of central Manchester. Abandoning the monorail and underground options conceived in the 1960s and 1970s, light rail was proposed in 1982 as the best and most economical public transport solution for Manchester city centre and the surrounding Greater Manchester metropolitan area, and gathered support throughout the 1980s as an appropriate integrated commuter service.
Government approval was granted in 1988 and the network began operating services between Bury Interchange and Victoria on 6 April 1992. This founded the United Kingdom's first modern street-running rail system and its second operational public tram system, the 1885-built Blackpool tramway being the only heritage tram system in the UK that had endured up to Metrolink's creation.
Metrolink has 77 stops along 48.5 miles (78.1 km) of standard-gauge track routed through seven of the ten boroughs of Greater Manchester. The system has a mix of designated light railway (segregated from other traffic) and on-street tramway.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DB0JXN - An old red British Telephone box turned into a village lending library, next to an old pillarbox (still emptied)
The kiosk in the centre of Great Budworth is now being stocked up with books after the parish council bought it from British Telecom for £1.
We are going to use it as a book exchange and are hoping people drop off books.
Children in the village are among those involved in the project.
A three month trial period is under way to see how well the scheme works.
If it is deemed a success then it will become permanent.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DE9ACA - On the edge of Chat Moss, in an area once full of collieries, lies the picturesque village of Astley Green. In the heart of the village stands Astley Green Colliery Museum which, but for the foresight of Lancashire County Council and several leading figures within the community, would have suffered the same fate as the other collieries in the area, total demolition. It was the uniqueness of the 3,300 hp twin tandem compound steam winding engine that brought the demolition to a halt. As the result of the intervention, the museum houses Lancashire's only surviving headgear and engine house, both of which now have listed building status.
The museum occupies some fifteen acres of the Astley Green Colliery site. To the south lies the Bridgewater Canal and Astley Moss, an important mossland site. The low-lying landscape ensures that the museum's 98ft high lattice steel headgear can be seen for many miles, a fitting memorial to days now past.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DE9AEM - On the edge of Chat Moss, in an area once full of collieries, lies the picturesque village of Astley Green.
Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DA6238 - Rear view of a white Trabant 601, commonly known as a Trabi, with an oval DDR sticker, historic-style number plate, tail lights, bumper, rear window and Trabant badge visible on the boot lid. The photograph appears to show the vehicle indoors, probably in a museum, exhibition or classic car display, making it useful for editorial stock photography on East Germany, the German Democratic Republic, Cold War motoring, divided Germany, socialist transport, everyday life under communism, postwar European design, car collecting and twentieth century history. The Trabant was produced by VEB Sachsenring in Zwickau and became one of the most recognisable symbols of the former DDR. The 601 model is especially associated with East German private motoring, with its compact body, two-stroke engine and distinctive styling. The DDR Museum describes the Trabant as a central symbol of everyday life in the GDR, while Berlin tourism material notes the Trabi Museum's focus on the classic P601 and its role in East German culture. The car's later reputation is closely tied to nostalgia, German reunification, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the contrast between western consumer choice and eastern planned-economy production. This rear detail image can illustrate themes such as Ostalgie, communist-era design, Eastern Bloc engineering, car shortages, heritage vehicles, museum interpretation, retro motoring, European travel, political history, German reunification, urban mobility and industrial production in Saxony. The visible DDR sticker gives the photograph a strong documentary link to East German identity, while the rear badges and number plate make it a useful close-up for articles about the Trabant 601, classic cars, Cold War exhibits, historical transport collections and the cultural afterlife of one of Europe's most famous small cars.

While on a great photo walk with good drinking friend and botanical polyglot Stephen Buchan in Humbie woods, a quiet oasis a few miles south of Pencaitland, East Lotian, Scotland the other week, this track was bouncing around in my head.
Portugal. The Man is an American experimental rock band based in Portland, Oregon, but originally from Wasilla, Alaska. The group released their first two albums with Fearless Records.
This is a track from their 4th album, The Satanic Satanist.
Released on July 21, 2009 it was originally named The Satanic Satanist of the Majestic Majesty, the album title was later shortened and an acoustic counterpart entitled The Majestic Majesty was released. The Satanic Satanist is themed around memories and stories from singer John Gourley's growing up in the state of Alaska. The album was recorded with the help of record producer Paul Q. Kolderie of Pixies and Radiohead fame, and it was the band's first time recording an album with pre-production.
Humbie is a hamlet and rural parish in East Lothian, Scotland. It lies in the south-west of the county, approximately 10 miles south-west of Haddington and 15 miles south-east of Edinburgh. Humbie as we know it today was formed as the result of the union between Keith Marischal and Keith Hundeby in 1618. There is not much of a village, more a scattered hamlet.
The 'T-Plan' Parish Church was rebuilt in 1800 and Gothicized in 1866 by David Bryce. The 'chancel' was added in 1932. Memorials in the churchyard include a heraldic tablet of the Borthwicks of Whitburgh of the early 17th century, and another monument to James Scriven of Ploughlandhill who died in 1668. The path down to the ample woodland winds down from the churchyard.

Ten is the base of the decimal numeral system, by far the most common system of denoting numbers in both spoken and written language. The reason for the choice of ten is assumed to be that humans have ten fingers (digits).
Ten is a composite number, its proper divisors being 1, 2 and 5. Ten is the smallest noncototient, a number that cannot be expressed as the difference between any integer and the total number of coprimes below it.
Ten is the second discrete semiprime (2.5) and the second member of the (2.q) discrete semiprime family. Ten has an aliquot sum \u03c3(n) of 8 and is accordingly the first discrete semiprime to be in deficit. All subsequent discrete semiprimes are in deficit. The aliquot sequence for 10 comprises five members (10,8,7,1,0) with this number being the second composite member of the 7-aliquot tree.
It is the aliquot sum of only one number the discrete semiprime 14.
Ten is a semi-meandric number.
The Roman numeral for ten is X (which looks like two V's [the Roman numeral for 5] put together)
it is thought that the V for five is derived from an open hand (five digits displayed). Incidentally, the Chinese word numeral for ten, is a cross, too: \u5341.
There are said to be Ten Lost Tribes of Israel (those other than Judah and Benjamin). There are Ten Sephirot in the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. The Bible records 10 generations between Adam and Noah, and 10 generations between Noah and Abraham.
'Ten' is an album by Y&

This classic GnR track is from The Spaghetti Incident. The album was the fifth and is unique for the band, consisting entirely of cover versions, mostly of punk and glam rock songs of the late 1970s and early 1980s. This was the last Guns N' Roses album to feature lead guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Matt Sorum.
The title is an inside joke referring to a food fight between Axl Rose and Steven Adler involving spaghetti. Much was made of this food fight during Adler's resolution lawsuit with the band in 1993, in which Adler's attorney referred to it as 'the Spaghetti Incident'. The meaning was explained by drummer Matt Sorum in a 1994 interview with Much Music and confirmed by Slash in his autobiography, 'Slash'.
The album has seen mixed reviews since its release. Rolling Stone magazine gave the album a 3.5 out of 5 stars. Allmusic said 'As punk albums go, The Spaghetti Incident? lacks righteous anger and rage. As Guns N' Roses albums go, it's a complete delight, returning to the ferocious, hard-rocking days of Appetite for Destruction'.
Always nice to see some leather with lace.

This is one of my favourite tracks from 'Welcome to My Nightmare', the eighth album by Alice Cooper, released in 1975. This was Alice Cooper's first solo album (all previous Alice Cooper releases were band efforts). The cover artwork was created by Drew Struzan for Pacific Eye &
Ear. Rolling Stone would later rank it as one of the 'Top 100 Album Covers Of All Time'.
Welcome to My Nightmare is a concept album. The songs, heard in sequence, form a journey through the nightmares of a child named Steven. Welcome to My Nightmare inspired the Alice Cooper: The Nightmare TV special and a worldwide concert tour in 1975, and the Welcome To My Nightmare concert film in 1976.
The song Welcome to my Nightmare is a parody of the 1968 novel 'There's a Nightmare in My Closet' by Mercer Mayer. Famed film actor of the Horror genre Vincent Price provided the introductory monologue in the song 'The Black Widow'. VP can be seen in the video link.
Alice Cooper was born Vincent Damon Furnier in 1948. He is an American rock singer, songwriter and musician whose career spans more than four decades. With a stage show that features guillotines, electric chairs, fake blood, boa constrictors and baby dolls, Cooper has drawn equally from horror movies, vaudeville and garage rock to pioneer a grandly theatrical and violent brand of heavy metal designed to shock. He came decades before the likes of Marilyn Manson and others.

\u00bfWhats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
'Train in Vain' is a song by the British punk rock band The Clash. It was released as the third and final single from their third album, London Calling. The song was not originally listed on the album's track listing, appearing as a secret track at the end of the album.
This was because the track was added to the record at the last minute, when the sleeve was already in production. It was the first Clash song to crack the United States Top 30 charts and in 2004, the song was ranked number 292 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
In the US, the song's title is expanded to 'Train in Vain (Stand by Me)', the words 'stand by me' dominate the chorus. It was titled 'Train in Vain' in part to avoid confusion with Ben E. King's signature song 'Stand by Me'.
'Train in Vain' was added after the deal for The Clash to write a song for an NME flexi disc fell through, and as Mick Jones commented, 'The real story on 'Train in Vain' is that originally we needed a song to give to the NME for a flexi disk that NME was going to do. And then it was decided that it didn't work out or decided the flexi disk didn't work out so we had this spare track we had done as a giveaway.
So we put it on London Calling but there wasn't time because the sleeves were already done.' The result of its late addition was that it was the only song without lyrics printed on the insert, and was not listed as a track, although its presence is announced as the title and position on the original vinyl record was scratched into the vinyl in the needle run-off area on the fourth side of the album.
'Train In Vain' sums up the 1960's British Beeching report.
The 'Beeching Axe' is an informal name for the British Government's attempt in the 1960s to reduce the cost of running British Railways, the nationalised railway system in the United Kingdom. The name is that of the main author of The Reshaping of British Railways, Dr Richard Beeching. Although this report also proposed new modes of freight service and the modernisation of trunk passenger routes, it is remembered for recommending wholesale closure of what it considered little-used and unprofitable railway lines, the removal of stopping passenger trains and closure of local stations on other lines which remained open.
The report was a reaction to significant losses which had begun in the 1950s as the expansion in road transport began to attract passengers and goods from the railways
losses which continued to bedevil British Railways despite the introduction of the railway Modernisation Plan of 1955.
Beeching proposed that only drastic action would save the railways from increasing losses in the future.
Successive governments were more keen on the cost-saving elements of the report rather than those requiring investment. More than 4,000 miles (6,400 km) of railway and 3,000 stations closed in the decade following the report, a reduction of 25 per cent of route miles and 50 per cent of stations. To this day, Beeching's name is unfavourably synonymous with mass closure of railways and loss of many local services. This is particularly so in parts of the country which suffered most from cuts.
Bury Bolton Street station was originally on the line from manchester Victoria to Accrington. Lines were closed between 1966 &
1980.
Bolton Street Station, with its original features, was rescued from demolition and placed in the care of the East Lancashire Railway, a preservation group. The line to Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall was re-opened as a heritage railway, under the name East Lancashire Railway in 1987 and has since been extended to Heywood. The line and station have since become a leading tourist attraction in the area.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 6150341559 - 'Canary Wharf is a major business district located in London, United Kingdom.
Follow me on Twitter twitter.com/HotpixUK
London has two main financial centres, alongside the traditional City of London, and contains many of the UK's tallest buildings, including the second-tallest (and tallest completed), One Canada Square. Canary Wharf contains around 14,000,000 square feet (1,300,000 m2) of office and retail space, of which around 7,900,000 square feet (734,000 m2) is owned by Canary Wharf Group.
Around 90,000 people work in Canary Wharf and it is home to the world or European headquarters of numerous major banks, professional services firms and media organisations including Barclays, Citigroup, Clifford Chance, HSBC, KPMG, MetLife, and Thomson Reuters.
Canary Wharf was built on the site of the West India Docks on the Isle of Dogs. From 1802, the area was one of the busiest docks in the world. By the 1950s, the port industry began to decline, leading to the docks closing by 1980.
Canary Wharf itself takes its name from No. 32 berth of the West Wood Quay of the Import Dock. This was built in 1936 for Fruit Lines Ltd, a subsidiary of Fred Olsen Lines for the Mediterranean and Canary Island (Insula Canaria (from canis) 'Island of Dogs') fruit trade. At their request, the quay and warehouse were given the name Canary Wharf.
The Canary Wharf of today began when Michael von Clemm, former chairman of Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB), came up with the idea to convert Canary Wharf into back office accomodation. A new business district was planned, construction started in 1988.
A bust and a boom in property prices then occurred. At the peak of property prices in 2007, the HSBC building sold for a record \u00a31.1 billion.
This dusk shot was taken at the evening rush hour and many offices are still filled with staff. Heron Quays DLR station is over to the far left and the Jubilee line underground tube station right of centre. The image is a panaorama stitch of siz seperate HDR images.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF21T8 - Astley Green Colliery Winding Gear Panorama where machinery has been preserved.
On the edge of Chat Moss, in an area once full of collieries, lies the picturesque village of Astley Green.
Apart from the steam winding engine and headgear the museum houses many exhibits, not least of which is the collection of 28 colliery locomotives, the largest collection of its type in the United Kingdom.
The colliery began its life in 1908 to exploit coal reserves in the south Lancashire Coalfield. Had it not been for the increasing demand for coal, at that time, the project would not have been viable. The coal seams at Astley Green are very deep and overlain by 100 feet of wet and unstable ground. These factors made the sinking of the shaft a very expensive proposition. The novelty of many of the requirements tested the ingenuity of the engineers during the construction, so much so that a paper, on the sinking of the shaft, was presented to the Institute of Mining Engineers. The colliery had a lifespan of only 62 years, finally closing its gates in 1970.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4589609737 - 'Saltaire United Reformed Church is one of the UK's most precious Victorian architectural gems. The church was built by Sir Titus Salt in 1859 near Shipley along from Bradford, West Yorkshire. Its style is Italianate religious architecture. It has been described as a classic 'Cathedral of Congregationalism'.
Saltaire was Sir Titus Salt's legacy. Sir Titus Salt, 1st Baronet (20 September 1803 \u2013 29 December 1876), born in Morley, near Leeds, was a manufacturer, politician and philanthropist in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. I find him pretty inspirational, he was certainly way ahead of his time. His father Daniel Salt was a fairly successful businessman and was able to send Titus to Batley Grammar School.
In 1833 he had taken over the running of his father's business and within twenty years had expanded it to be the largest employer in Bradford. In 1848 Titus Salt became mayor of Bradford. He had a social conscience and took steps to look for solutions to the pollution from the many factory chimneys in the city.
Around 1850, he decided to build a large mill to consolidate his textile manufacture in one place, but he 'did not like to be a party to increasing that already over-crowded borough', and he bought some land three miles from Bradford, adjacent to Shipley next to the River Aire. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal and the Midland Railway, main arteries of the day were adjacent.
Building of his mill was begun in 1851. He opened it with a grand banquet on his 50th birthday, 20 September 1853. Following that public conscience he then set about building the houses, bathhouses, institute, hospital, almshouses and churches, that make up Saltaire. very revolutionary for the time. Similar ventures were persued by the quaker chocolate barons at Bournville and by Rowntree in York. Salt built the Congregational Church pictured here (now Saltaire United Reformed Church) at his own expense in 1858\u201359. He donated the land on which the Wesleyan Chapel was built by public subscription in 1866\u201368.
Sir Titus commissioned architects Lockwood and Mawson to design the building, as they had designed a number of other important Italianate buildings in Bradford City centre.
His body is interred at a mausaleum at the church and can be viewed. Reportidly at his funeral 100,000 people lined the route. Many people had him to thank for his far sightedness and care for his fellow man.
The church today is grade I listed. The entrance is up six steps under a portico supported by six unfluted Corinthian columns and topped by a fretted tower with cupola.
Inside are hollow Corinthian columns with beautiful Scagliola exteriors, an Italian technique implemented by Mr. Dolan of Manchester. Two ornate chandeliers of ormolu and cut glass hang from the ceiling, of such great weight that additional roof trusses had to be inserted to support them. Originally lit by gas, they were made by Hausburg of Liverpool.
The existing organ, built by Peter Conacher and Co. of Huddersfield, was installed in 1890, rebuilt at the end of the Second World War.

The city has had three cathedrals. The first was St. Mary's, a monastic building, only a few ruins of which remain. The second was St Michael's, a 14th-century Gothic church later designated Cathedral, that remains a ruined shell after its bombing during the Second World War. The third is the new St Michael's Cathedral, built after the destruction of the former and a celebration of 20th-century architecture.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF23NK - Eastgate, shown here and Eastgate Clock in Chester, Cheshire, England, stand on the site of the original entrance to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix. The clock is a prominent landmark in the city of Chester and is said to be the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben.
The original gate was guarded by a timber tower which was replaced by a stone tower in the 2nd century, and this in turn was replaced probably in the 14th century. The present gateway dates from 1768 and is a three-arched sandstone structure which carries the walkway forming part of Chester city walls. In 1899 a clock was added to the top of the gateway to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria two years earlier. It is carried on openwork iron pylons, has a clock face on all four sides, and a copper ogee cupola. The clock was designed by the Chester architect John Douglas. The whole structure, gateway and clock, was listed by English Heritage on 28 July 1955 as a Grade I listed building. You know you have been on a visit to Chester when you have an image of this clock in your memory card. To avoid this failure of imagination, this photograph was taken from under the clock mechanism.
Eastgate was originally defended by a timber tower. The road running through the gate led to Manchester, then across the Pennines to York. By the 18th century the city walls were no longer needed for defensive purposes and so, rather than being pulled down, they were converted into walkways. The medieval gateways were obstructing the traffic into the city and were replaced by wider arched gateways with balustraded parapets. The first gateway to be replaced was Eastgate in 1768 which was rebuilt as an elegant arch. It was built at the expense of Richard Grosvenor, 1st Earl Grosvenor, and designed by Mr Hayden (or Heyden), the earl's surveyor of buildings.
Eastgate today is a clutch of upmarket shops, Browns Jewellers, banks and the Chester Grosvenor Five Star Hotel.

A modern jack-o'-lantern is a carved pumpkin, although originally large turnips were carved. It is associated chiefly with the holiday of Samhain and Halloween and was named after the phenomenon of strange light flickering over peat bogs, called ignis fatuus or jack-o'-lantern. In a jack-o'-lantern, the top is cut off, and the inside flesh then scooped out
an image, usually a monstrous face, is carved out, and the lid replaced. It is typically seen during Halloween.

The Sisters of Mercy are an English goth rock band that formed in 1979. After achieving early underground fame in UK, the band had their commercial breakthrough in mid-1980s and sustained it until the early 1990s, when they stopped releasing new recorded output as a strike against their record company. Currently, the band is a touring outfit only.
Their live performances featured many cover versions: among those, a medley consisting of 'Sister Ray' (by Velvet Underground), 'Ghostrider' (by Suicide) and 'Louie Louie' (by Richard Berry) became a live staple. Only three of them, The Stooges' '1969', The Rolling Stones' 'Gimme Shelter' and Hot Chocolate's 'Emma' were eventually recorded and released on Sisters records (all as b-sides).
In late 1983, following this highly successful 'Temple of Love' single, the band signed a contract with major record label WEA.
The group has released three original studio albums, of which the last was released in 1990. Each album was recorded by a different line-up
singer and songwriter Andrew Eldritch and the drum machines called Doktor Avalanche are the only points of continuity among the line-ups. Eldritch and Avalanche were also involved in The Sisterhood, a side-project connected with Eldritch's dispute with former members.
The group ceased recording activity in 1993, when they went on strike against their record company Time Warner, which they accused of withholding royalties and of incompetence. Although Time Warner eventually let the band go in 1997, they have not signed to another label, and have chosen not to use an independent label, despite showcasing numerous new songs in their live sets.
This image was shot in a temple in late evening. The deep orange glow of the sun is made even warmer by the sienna coloured and textured walls. It reminded me of the final temple scene in Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now.
Willard is brought before Kurtz in the darkened temple, where Kurtz derides him as 'an errand boy, sent by grocery clerks to collect a bill'. Bound to a post, Willard watches helplessly as Kurtz drops Chef's severed head into his lap. After some time in captivity, Willard is released and given the freedom of the compound. Knowing that Willard would not leave, Kurtz lectures him on his theories of war, humanity, and civilization. As Kurtz explains his motives and philosophy while praising the ruthlessness and dedication of the Viet Cong, he asks Willard to tell his son everything about him in the event of his death.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HCNH - The stem of Lymm Cross is supported by four pillars and surmounted by gables and finials bearing the legends Save Time', Think of the Last' and We are a Shadow'. There are also three sundials on the West, South and East faces.
Crosses were originally there to remind people of their commitment to God - with the name and sometimes the shape of the structures clearly a reference to Christ's crucifixion.
They have also had many practical uses such as road and boundary markers, memorials and preaching places.
However, the purpose of the one at Lymm is a mystery. Many have commented that it resembles a market cross in a market square but there is no evidence that there has ever been a market there.
Others have suggested it used to be a place of worship before the village had its own church.
Joe added: It is a focal point of the village where everything happens. It is where the town crier does his proclamations and it is a common meeting point.
I recently did some history talks for local schools and all the children knew The Cross and had all played on The Cross.
It gives Lymm a sense of identity and is a prominent landmark for people to associate with.

Lying on the River Dee, close to the border with Wales, it is home to 120,622 inhabitants, and is the largest and most populous settlement of the wider unitary authority area of Cheshire West and Chester, which had a population of 328,100 according to the 2001 Census. Chester was granted city status in 1541.
Chester was founded as a castrum or Roman fort with the name Deva Victrix in the year 79 by the Roman Legio II Adiutrix during the reign of the Emperor Vespasian. Chester's four main roads, Eastgate, Northgate, Watergate and Bridge, follow routes laid out at this time almost 2,000 years ago. One of the three main Roman army bases, Deva later became a major settlement in the Roman province of Britannia. After the Romans left in the 5th century, the Saxons fortified the town against the Danes and gave Chester its name.
Chester was one of the last towns in England to fall to the Normans in the Norman conquest of England. William the Conqueror ordered the construction of a castle, to dominate the town and the nearby Welsh border. In 1071 he made Hugh d'Avranches the first Earl of Chester.
Chester has a number of medieval buildings, but some of the black-and-white buildings within the city centre are actually Victorian restorations. Chester is one of the best preserved walled cities in Britain. Apart from a 100-metre (330 ft) section, the listed Grade I walls are almost complete.
The Industrial Revolution brought railways, canals, and new roads to the city, which saw substantial expansion and development Chester Town Hall and the Grosvenor Museum are examples of Victorian architecture from this period.
