Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMNT - This image shows Central Parade flats and its prominent clock tower on Church Hill in Walthamstow, East London, an instantly recognisable local landmark within the Walthamstow Village area of the London Borough of Waltham Forest. The building dates from the interwar period and reflects the practical yet decorative municipal architecture of the 1930s, combining red brick construction with patterned concrete panels and a tall vertical tower housing a large public clock.
The development was designed as mixed-use housing, with commercial premises at ground level and residential flats above, a common urban model intended to support walkable neighbourhoods and local trade. The clock tower acts as both a civic feature and a wayfinding landmark, visually anchoring Church Hill and the surrounding streets.
The photograph was taken in daylight under a bright, partly cloudy summer sky, which highlights the contrasting textures of brick, concrete, and glazing across the facade. Pedestrians, traffic signals, and nearby residential buildings place the structure firmly within everyday London life, emphasising its continued role as functional housing rather than a preserved monument.
Images such as this are well suited to editorial use covering themes of London housing, social and municipal architecture, urban regeneration, local identity, mixed-use development, and the character of historic residential areas in East London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMR1 - This image shows the Vestry House, widely regarded as the oldest surviving domestic building in Walthamstow, East London. Dating from the fifteenth century, the house is a rare example of medieval timber framed architecture in the area and today forms part of the Vestry House Museum, located close to St Mary's Church in Walthamstow Village.
The building features characteristic black and white timber framing, a steeply pitched tiled roof and traditional construction methods associated with Tudor period domestic buildings. Over the centuries, the Vestry House has served a number of civic and community functions, including use as a meeting place for local parish affairs, before being preserved as a museum dedicated to local history.
In the foreground, a bright red Royal Mail pillar box provides a strong visual contrast with the muted tones of the historic structure, highlighting the coexistence of everyday modern street life with London's deep architectural past. The image was taken in daylight under bright but overcast conditions, allowing clear visibility of the building's materials, textures and surrounding streetscape.
The Vestry House remains an important heritage landmark in Walthamstow, offering a tangible link to the area's medieval origins and its gradual transformation from rural village to part of the modern city of London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMR9 - This image shows the exterior of The Nags Head, a well-known public house located at 9 Orford Road in the heart of Walthamstow Village, East London. The pub is instantly recognisable by its distinctive green glazed tile facade, contrasting pink-painted woodwork, and traditional hanging signage, which together give it a strong visual identity within the local streetscape.
Outdoor wooden tables and benches line the pavement outside the pub, creating a popular space for al fresco drinking and dining, particularly during warmer months. The scene reflects the village-like character of Orford Road, which is known for its independent shops, caf??s, restaurants, and historic buildings, offering a quieter contrast to the busier parts of Walthamstow further south.
The Nags Head has long been part of Walthamstow's social life, functioning as a neighbourhood pub and community meeting place. The photograph was taken in daylight under an overcast but bright sky, which evenly lights the tiled exterior and architectural details without harsh shadows.
This image is well suited to editorial use covering London pub culture, neighbourhood life, independent hospitality, East London streetscapes, food and drink tourism, and the character of historic village centres within the capital.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJW6YW - Grappenhall is a suburb of Warrington, Cheshire, in the civil parish of Grappenhall and Thelwall, which had a population of 9,377 at the 2001 census. At the 2021 census the population of the parish was 9,651.
Grappenhall is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 with the name Gropenhale and with a valuation of five shillings.
Sandstone carving of a 'Cheshire Cat', St Wilfrid's Church, Grappenhall
St Wilfrid's Church has a carving of a cat on the west face of the tower. This may have been Lewis Carroll's inspiration for the grinning Cheshire Cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The church itself was first constructed in 1120, though was rebuilt 400 years later. The church was also, at a time, in the possession of the Boidelle (Boydell) family.
Along with the church, the centre of the village contains two pubs, the Parr Arms and the Ram's Head, and Grappenhall Hall Residential School (closed down) and St Wilfrid's Primary School. Bradshaw Community Primary School is located north of the village centre.

CBGB is a rock star past his prime ? singing hits we've heard a thousand times and new songs we don't want to hear at all.
Despite the heartfelt efforts to save the club from its demise over a rent dispute ? with the latest charge led by Little Steven Van Zandt ? it's time to let it die.
No longer relevant as a cultural spawning ground, the club's everything that punk rock isn't ? an institution, a landmark, a stop on the same New York tour bus which brakes at the Plaza Hotel and the Empire State Building.
Withdraw the artificial life support. Let it be remembered in our rock ?n' roll hearts, but don't let it wither on the Bowery.
The venerated venue, which opened in 1973, was truly the birthplace of punk. It was where the Ramones sniffed glue, where Patti Smith first danced barefoot, where the Talking Heads turned psycho killers, where thousands of bands screamed their hearts out and plastered their stickers on the walls. It gave kids all over the world a fresh idea of what music could be.
As a heralded institution, it's unequaled, but as a place to break bands, the club hasn't mattered for years. It only draws a crowd for special industry events ? or anniversary parties.
All eyes are upon it now because the lease, held by the Bowery Residents Committee (a non-profit group to aid the homeless), is up on Aug. 31 and hasn't been renewed. There is a court clash and negotiations over unpaid back rent and future rent, which the BRC wants to double.
To support the legal battle, the club is holding punk bandstudded benefits (with big-bang bands such as the Circle Jerks and the Dead Boys) throughout August and September.
This past Monday night, the big guns came to town: Little Steven Van Zandt
Tommy, the last standing Ramone
Lenny Kaye
and Blondie's Debbie Harry.
CB's founder and owner Hilly Kristal turned to Little Steven for help in his fight. You gotta give props to the E Street Band guit

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBF05F - Block Drug Company was a pharmaceutical company based in Jersey City, New Jersey, United States, that specialized in dental care products. Its most popular products included Polident denture cleanser, Poli-Grip denture adhesive, Dentu-Creme denture toothpaste, Nytol sleeping pill, Tegrin medicated shampoo for psoriasis, Lava hand soaps (acquired from Procter & Gamble), Beano and Phazyme anti-gas products, Balmex diaper rash ointments, and Sensodyne desensitizing toothpaste.
GlaxoSmithKline purchased the company for $1.24 billion in 2001.
The company was founded in 1907 by Alexander Block, a Russian immigrant who had a small drugstore on Fulton Street in Brooklyn, New York. He turned the company into a wholesaler in 1915, then became a drug manufacturer in 1925, acquiring a 50 percent interest in Wernet's Dental Manufacturing Company.
Block Drug moved its headquarters to Jersey City, New Jersey in 1938.
Although Alexander Block built the company largely through acquisitions, he developed the Polident brand internally during the 1930s. In 1948, Block Drug rolled out the Ammi-i-Dent tooth powder, and in the early 1950s, the company developed Nytol. After Alexander Block's death in 1953, his son Leonard N. Block (1911?2005) took over, eventually becoming the company's chairman. The last major new product the company introduced was Tegrin, in 1964.
Although Block Drug was a public company from 1971 until 2001, it operated much like a private, family-run firm, with the Block family holding all voting shares plus 54 percent of the non-voting stock. In addition, the company never held annual meetings or issued proxy statements
Leonard N. Block died in 2005 at age 93 after suffering for years from Alzheimer's disease. Block's nephew John P. Roberts was the producer of the Woodstock Festival using money from his Block inheritance.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBF06B - The Beastie Boys were an American hip hop group from New York City formed in 1981. The group comprised Michael Mike D Diamond (vocals, drums), Adam MCA Yauch (vocals, bass) and Adam Ad-Rock Horovitz (vocals, guitar).
The Beastie Boys were formed as a four-piece hardcore punk band, the Young Aborigines, in 1979 by Mike D (vocals), MCA (bass), John Berry (guitar) and Kate Schellenbach (drums). They appeared on the compilation cassette New York Thrash, contributing two songs from their first EP, Polly Wog Stew, in 1982. Berry left shortly thereafter and was replaced by Horovitz. After achieving local success with the 1983 experimental hip hop single Cooky Puss, the Beastie Boys made a full transition to hip hop, and Schellenbach left the group soon after. They toured with Madonna in 1985 and a year later released their debut album Licensed to Ill. It was followed by Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head, Ill Communication, Hello Nasty, To the 5 Boroughs, The Mix-Up, and Hot Sauce Committee Part Two.
The Beastie Boys have sold 26 million records in the United States and 50 million records worldwide, making them the biggest-selling rap group since Billboard began recording sales in 1991. With seven platinum-selling albums from 1986 to 2004,[4] the Beastie Boys were one of the longest-lived hip hop acts worldwide. In 2012, they became the third rap group to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In the same year, MCA died of cancer. In 2014, Mike D confirmed that Beastie Boys had disbanded.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBF06C - Block Drug Company was a pharmaceutical company based in Jersey City, New Jersey, United States, that specialized in dental care products.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBF06D - As the United States industrialized during the 19th century, immigrants and workers from the countryside were housed in former middle-class houses and other buildings, such as warehouses, which were bought up and divided into small dwellings. Beginning as early as the 1830s in New York City's Lower East Side or possibly the 1820s on Mott Street, three- and four-story buildings were converted into railroad flats, so called because the rooms were linked together like the cars of a train, with windowless internal rooms. The adapted buildings were also known as rookeries, and these were a particular concern, as they were prone to collapse and fire. Mulberry Bend and Five Points were the sites of notorious rookeries that the city worked for decades to clear. In both rookeries and purpose-built tenements, communal water taps and water closets (either privies or school sinks, which opened into a vault that often became clogged) were squeezed into the small open spaces between buildings. In parts of the Lower East Side, buildings were older and had courtyards, generally occupied by machine shops, stables, and other businesses.
Lower East Side tenement buildings
Such tenements were particularly prevalent in New York, where in 1865 a report stated that 500,000 people lived in unhealthy tenements, whereas in Boston in 1845, less than a quarter of workers were housed in tenements. One reason New York had so many tenements was the large numbers of immigrants
another was that the grid plan on which streets were laid out, and the economic practice of building on individual 25- by 100-foot lots, combined to produce high land coverage. Prior to 1867, tenements often covered more than 90 percent of the lot, were five or six stories high, and had 18 rooms per floor, of which only two received direct sunlight. Yards were a few feet wide and often filled with privies. Interior rooms were unventilated.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBF07F - Physical Graffiti is the sixth studio album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin. It was released as a double album on 24 February 1975 by the group's new record label, Swan Song Records.
The band wrote and recorded eight new songs for the album in early 1974 at Headley Grange, a country house in Hampshire, which gave them ample time to improvise arrangements and experiment with recording. The total playing time covered three sides of an LP, so they decided to expand it into a double by including previously unreleased tracks from the sessions for the earlier albums Led Zeppelin III, Led Zeppelin IV and Houses of the Holy. The album covered a range of styles including hard rock, progressive rock, rock 'n' roll and folk. The album was then mixed over summer 1974 and planned for an end-of year release. It was delayed because of the sleeve, which was designed by Peter Corriston and featured a theme around a tenement block in Manhattan, New York.
Physical Graffiti was commercially and critically successful upon its release and debuted at number one on album charts in both the US and the UK. It was promoted by a successful US tour and a five-night residency at Earl's Court, London, and has since been viewed as one of the group's strongest albums and the artistic peak of their career. The album has been reissued on CD several times, including an expansive 40th anniversary edition in 2015. Physical Graffiti was later certified 16?? platinum in the United States

41 Cooper Square, designed by architect Thom Mayne of Morphosis, is a nine-story, 175,000-square-foot (16,300 m2) academic center that houses the Albert Nerken School of Engineering with additional spaces for the humanities, art, and architecture departments in the newest addition to Cooper Union's campus in Cooper Square, Manhattan, New York City
there is also an exhibition gallery and auditorium for public programs and retail space on the ground level. The building, originally known as the New Academic Building, stands on the site where the School of Art Abram Hewitt Building was located
the site of the building formerly used for engineering will be leased to a developer once the move has been completed. Construction of the building began in 2006 and was completed in September 2009. The project has been controversial in the East Village neighborhood where 41 Cooper Square is located.
Mayne designed the building from the inside out, starting with a central atrium, referred to as a vertical piazza. The atrium plays the role of the public square in the building where social interaction can occur. Its form was created by carving out program space and circulation paths and is contained and accentuated in a steel lattice envelope that reaches the full height of the building.

The kiosk in the centre of Great Budworth is now being stocked up with books after the parish council bought it from British Telecom for ?1.
We are going to use it as a book exchange and are hoping people drop off books.
Children in the village are among those involved in the project.
A three month trial period is under way to see how well the scheme works.
If it is deemed a success then it will become permanent.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DE9ACA - On the edge of Chat Moss, in an area once full of collieries, lies the picturesque village of Astley Green. In the heart of the village stands Astley Green Colliery Museum which, but for the foresight of Lancashire County Council and several leading figures within the community, would have suffered the same fate as the other collieries in the area, total demolition. It was the uniqueness of the 3,300 hp twin tandem compound steam winding engine that brought the demolition to a halt. As the result of the intervention, the museum houses Lancashire's only surviving headgear and engine house, both of which now have listed building status.
The museum occupies some fifteen acres of the Astley Green Colliery site. To the south lies the Bridgewater Canal and Astley Moss, an important mossland site. The low-lying landscape ensures that the museum's 98ft high lattice steel headgear can be seen for many miles, a fitting memorial to days now past.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HFDX - Sunset at the Ruins of St Columbas Church, Aignish, outside Stornoway Isle Of Lewis, Scotland
Aignish (Scottish Gaelic: Aiginis) is located northwest of Knock and east of Stornoway on the east coast of the Isle of Lewis (Scottish Gaelic: Le?dhas), Scotland. The township is at the island side of the isthmus connecting to the Eye peninsula.
Lewis is of Presbyterian tradition with a rich history, having once been part of the Norse Kingdom of Mann and the Isles. Today, life is very different from elsewhere in Scotland with Sabbath observance, the Gaelic language and peat cutting retaining more importance than elsewhere. Lewis has a rich cultural heritage as can be seen from its myths and legends as well as the local literary and musical traditions.
St Columba's Church, Aignish, Isle of Lewis. The crofting village contains the historic Eye Church (Scottish Gaelic: Eaglais na h-Aoidhe), a large pre-Reformation Church. The present church buildings are believed to be medieval, built during two separate construction phases. They were constructed on the site believed to be the cell of St. Catan, a contemporary of St. Columba. The church was the burial ground of the MacLeods of Lewis.
Saint Columba (7 December 521 ? 9 June 597 AD)?also known as Colum Cille (Old Irish, meaning dove of the church), Colm Cille (Irish), Calum Cille (Scottish Gaelic) and Kolban or Kolbj??rn (Old Norse, meaning black bear)?was a Gaelic Irish missionary monk who propagated Christianity among the Picts during the Early Medieval Period. He was one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland.

The low-lying landscape ensures that the museum's 98ft high lattice steel headgear can be seen for many miles, a fitting memorial to days now past.
Apart from the steam winding engine and headgear the museum houses many exhibits, not least of which is the collection of 28 colliery locomotives, the largest collection of its type in the United Kingdom.
The colliery began its life in 1908 to exploit coal reserves in the south Lancashire Coalfield. Had it not been for the increasing demand for coal, at that time, the project would not have been viable. The coal seams at Astley Green are very deep and overlain by 100 feet of wet and unstable ground. These factors made the sinking of the shaft a very expensive proposition. The novelty of many of the requirements tested the ingenuity of the engineers during the construction, so much so that a paper, on the sinking of the shaft, was presented to the Institute of Mining Engineers. The colliery had a lifespan of only 62 years, finally closing its gates in 1970.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY3RJW - East Ilsley
Sheltered in a dip in the downs just off the A34 Southampton to Oxford and the Midlands trunk road is the ancient village of East Ilsley. The A34, once an important coaching route, originally passed right through the village and just to the north of the village is the ancient Ridgeway. So East Ilsley, once also known as Market Ilsley or Chipping Ilsley, had a prominent and important position.
The origin of the name is unclear. Originally Hildeslei, It could mean place of conflict or battle field and it is known that Alfred defeated the Danes in the Battle of Ashdown which took place nearby. Alternatively it could mean a woodland clearing of a man called Hild, and this meaning is supported by at least two sources. The nearby village of West Ilsley was originally a hamlet within the parish of East Ilsley.
East Ilsley once held an important weekly sheep market and had claims on the title of sheep farming capital of England. In the 19th century the sheep market was second in size only to Smithfield market in London. The origins of the then small East Ilsley sheep fair can be traced back to the 13th century, but from from the 17th century a weekly sheep market was held throughout spring and summer. As many as eighty thousand sheep could be auctioned in a single day which demonstrates the importance of the fair. The last fair was held in 1934 and a plaque in the centre of the village records this event.
Not surprisingly East Ilsley has had many inns and pubs. In the 19th century twelve were known to exist serving the coaching route from Oxford to Newbury and the sheep fairs, and at the beginning of the last century there were still eight. More surprisingly perhaps, when many villages have lost their village pubs, there are still two public houses in the centre of the village.
Standing prominently on a hill away from the centre of the village is the village church, St. Mary's, parts of which date from the 12th century.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HCNH - The stem of Lymm Cross is supported by four pillars and surmounted by gables and finials bearing the legends Save Time', Think of the Last' and We are a Shadow'. There are also three sundials on the West, South and East faces.
Crosses were originally there to remind people of their commitment to God - with the name and sometimes the shape of the structures clearly a reference to Christ's crucifixion.
They have also had many practical uses such as road and boundary markers, memorials and preaching places.
However, the purpose of the one at Lymm is a mystery. Many have commented that it resembles a market cross in a market square but there is no evidence that there has ever been a market there.
Others have suggested it used to be a place of worship before the village had its own church.
Joe added: It is a focal point of the village where everything happens. It is where the town crier does his proclamations and it is a common meeting point.
I recently did some history talks for local schools and all the children knew The Cross and had all played on The Cross.
It gives Lymm a sense of identity and is a prominent landmark for people to associate with.
