Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFFME - Queen Victoria and the Oliver Cromwell statue
The gates were made for the International Exhibition of 1862, and then intended for Queen Victoria's Sandringham home in Norfolk. The Queen was meant to see them for the first time at the exhibition but, clearly visible through the gates, was a statue of Oliver Cromwell.
As Cromwell had signed King Charles I's death warrant, royalty didn't like him very much. The Queen's courtiers realised she wouldn't be amused to see the statue, and diverted her.
Coalbrookdale found it hard to find a buyer for such grand gates, so Monks was able to buy and bring them to Warrington to stand at the front of the town hall lawn. Monks also presented the cast iron Cromwell statue, designed by John Bell, to Warrington in 1899. It now stands on Bridge Street and is Grade II Listed.
The design
Because the owner was supposed to be Queen Victoria, the gates have four winged figures of Nike, the goddess of victory. They also had a Prince of Wales motif above the arch in the middle, but this was changed to Warrington's Coat of Arms.
The grand opening
Such grand gates needed a grand opening. So on Warrington Walking Day, 28 June 1895, Monks ceremoniously opened the gates with a golden key and the church groups set off from the town hall lawn, through the gates and on to their walk.
The iconic golden gates are Grade II* Listed, along with the gate piers and the lamps which line the driveways at either side of the town hall. They are also part of the Town Hall Conservation Area. The gates have recently been refurbished to repair, enhance and preserve them for future generations

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEJ6K3 - The Black Friar Pub. Post-1903 work by Herbert Fuller-Clark (b.1869, d. after 1912). Original building 1875. Remodelled in several stages beginning 1903, 1914, and 1925. 174 Queen Victoria Street, London EC4. Individual sculptures by Nathaniel Hitch, Frederick Callcott, Henry Poole, and Farmer and Brindley. According to Philip Ward-Jackson,
Hitch was responsible for the stonework grotesques on the exterior, and for a considerable amount of similar work in wood in the interior. Callcott created the pattern for the larger copper relief scenes, representing the day to day activities of the friars. . . . It seems probable that Callcott went on working on those reliefs until shortly before his death in 1925, when the rather more prestigious Henry Poole took over, to produce the relief work in the Small Saloon Bar. One of Callcott's frieze-like panels, entitled Saturday Afternoon, was to be repeated on the screen wall, separating the Luncheon Bar from the Small Saloon Bar, although it looks quite different in its new form, because the figures are much more widely spaced out, and the coloured marbles in the second rendering give it more depth.
Of these artists, Hitch (1841-1935), deserves to be better known. Following an apprenticeship to Farmer and Brindley, he had a very long and distinguished career as a sculptor: his work can be found at Cardiff Castle, suggesting that he was probably a member of William Burges's workforce there, and also in many churches and cathedrals including Truro Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. He was particularly associated with the architects W. D. Car??e and J. L. Pearson.
It is worth noting that the popular London Encyclopaedia disagrees about the dates and artists involved here, stating simply that the building was erected in 1875, the ground floor being remodelled in 1905 by H. Fuller Clark. The outside is covered with mosaics and carved figures by Henry Poole (1903).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H6JMXT - Aberdeen Harbour was the first publicly limited company in the United Kingdom and is today the principal commercial port in northern Scotland and an international port for general cargo, roll-on/roll-off and container traffic. The harbour also serves NorthLink Ferries, which sail to Kirkwall, Orkney and Lerwick, Shetland. The Aberdeen Maritime Museum (on Shiprow in the city centre) includes exhibitions and displays which tell the story of the harbour and its role in the economy and development of the city.
Originally, the defective harbour, with a shallow sand and gravel bar at its entrance, retarded the trade of Aberdeen, but under various acts since 1773 it was greatly deepened.
By the Harbour Act of 1868, the river Dee near the harbour was diverted from the south at a cost of ?œ80,000, and 90 acres (364,000 m?ý) of new ground, in addition to 25 acres (101,000 m?ý) formerly made up, were provided on the north side of the river for the Albert Basin (with a graving dock), quays and warehouses. A 1050 ft (320 m) long concrete breakwater was constructed on the south side of the stream as a protection against south-easterly gales. On Girdleness, the southern point of the bay, a lighthouse was built in 1833.
The North Pier, built partly by John Smeaton 1775-81, and partly by Thomas Telford 1810-15, extends nearly 3,000 ft (1000 m) into the North Sea and raised the bar.
Victoria Dock, named in honour of the queen's visit to the city in that year, is a wet dock of 29 acres (117,000 m?ý) and with 6000 ft (1800 m) of quay, was completed in 1848

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GMAAMY - Robert Gordon's College is a private co-educational day school in the heart of Aberdeen, Scotland. The school caters for pupils from Nursery through to S6.
It originally opened in 1750 as the result of a bequest by Robert Gordon, an Aberdeen merchant who made his fortune from trading with Baltic ports, and was known at foundation as Robert Gordon's Hospital. This was 19 years after Gordon had died and left his estate in a 'Deed of Mortification' to fund the foundation of the Hospital. The fine William Adam-designed building was in fact completed in 1732, but lay empty until 1745 until Gordon's foundation had sufficient funds to complete the interior. During the Jacobite rising, in 1746 the buildings were commandeered by Hanoverian troops and named Fort Cumberland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY3RN9 - Stalybridge railway station serves Stalybridge, Greater Manchester. It lies on the Huddersfield Line, 7?« miles (12 km) east of Manchester Piccadilly and 8?¬ miles (13 km) east of Manchester Victoria. The station is managed by First TransPennine Express.
Stalybridge station was built by the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway and opened on 23 December 1845. There was a Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway station adjacent but this closed in 1917. The main function of the station was as a junction for the Stockport-Stalybridge Line, which allowed passengers from London and the South to transfer to the Huddersfield Line. This role has been lost since it is now possible for passengers to change at Manchester Piccadilly station. The Micklehurst Loop also diverged from the original 1849 Huddersfield & Manchester main line here - it was closed in 1966, but the disused tunnel it used to pass below the town's northern suburbs can be seen alongside the original one that is still used today by trains heading to and from Yorkshire.

Construction began in June 2008, but the opening was delayed. The scheme was costed at ?œ375 million in 2003, but by May 2008, when contracts were signed, the cost had risen to ?œ521 million. After extra interest payments are factored in, the final cost is expected to top ?œ1 billion. The line opened on 31 May 2014.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED8PR4 - Carlisle railway station, also known as Carlisle Citadel station, is a railway station which serves the city of Carlisle, Cumbria, England, and is a major station on the West Coast Main Line, lying 102 miles (164 km) south of Glasgow Central, and 299 miles (481 km) north of London Euston.
It is also the northern terminus of the celebrated Settle and Carlisle Line ? notionally (and historically) a continuation of the Midland Main Line from Leeds, Sheffield and ultimately London St Pancras. It is a Grade II* listed building
The station was built in 1847, in a neo-Tudor style to the designs of William Tite.[2] It was then one of a number of stations in the city - the others were at Crown Street (Maryport & Carlisle Railway) and London Road (Newcastle and Carlisle Railway) - but had become the main one by 1851
it was expanded and extended in 1875-1876, with the arrival of the Midland Railway (who became the seventh different company to serve it).
The Beeching Axe fell with very significant rail closures including the former North British Railway lines to Silloth (closed on 7 September 1964) and Edinburgh via Galashiels (the Waverley Line, closed on 6 January 1969). The axe cut off the Castle Douglas and Dumfries Railway and Portpatrick Railway in 1965 resulting in an adverse mileage increase via the Glasgow South Western Line to reach Stranraer Harbour and thus Northern Ireland.
The layout has also undergone few changes of any significance other than the singling of the ex-NER Tyne Valley route down to London Road Junction as part of the 1972-3 re-signalling scheme associated with WCML electrification.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F0XDWK - The Brandenburg Gate (German: Brandenburger Tor) is an 18th-century neoclassical triumphal arch in Berlin, and one of the best-known landmarks of Germany. It is built on the site of a former city gate that marked the start of the road from Berlin to the town of Brandenburg an der Havel.
It is located in the western part of the city centre of Berlin, at the junction of Unter den Linden and Ebertstra??e, immediately west of the Pariser Platz. One block to the north stands the Reichstag building. The gate is the monumental entry to Unter den Linden, the renowned boulevard of linden trees, which formerly led directly to the city palace of the Prussian monarchs.
It was commissioned by King Frederick William II of Prussia as a sign of peace and built by Carl Gotthard Langhans from 1788 to 1791. Having suffered considerable damage in World War II, the Brandenburg Gate was fully restored from 2000 to 2002 by the Stiftung Denkmalschutz Berlin (Berlin Monument Conservation Foundation).
During the post-war Partition of Germany, the gate was isolated and inaccessible immediately next to the Berlin Wall, and the area around the gate was featured most prominently in the media coverage of the tearing down of the wall in 1989.
Throughout its existence, the Brandenburg Gate was often a site for major historical events and is today considered a symbol of the tumultuous history of Europe and Germany, but also of European unity and peace.

This is one of my favourite tracks from one of my favourite vinyl albums, purchased in 'Yanks' off Oxford Road Manchester circa 1979.
Oops! Wrong Planet is an album released in 1977 by Todd Rundgren's band, Utopia. It delivers a markedly trimmed down, pop-oriented, and somewhat cynical direction for the band following the optimistic and progressively influenced previous album, Ra.
The band were Roger Powell on Vocals/ Keyboards, Trumpet, Powell Probe, Todd Rundgren: Vocals, Guitar, Saxophone, Production and Engineering, Kasim Sulton: Vocals, Bass Guitar and John 'Willie' Wilcox: Vocals, Drums.
Rundgren had a successful solo career before, during, and after Utopia, as did his bandmates, although to more modest levels. Roger Powell toured with David Bowie for the live album Stage, and previously worked as protege for Robert Moog. Powell's solo album Air Pocket as voted no 1 in 1980 by Keyboard Magazine magazine but after the demise of Utopia he had to give up performing for some time due to Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI).
Prior to Utopia Willie recorded the Rundgren produced 'War Babies' album and continued to tour with Daryl Hall &
John Oates. Willie Wilcox was the senior composer and sound designer for NBC Universal Television from 1999–2005, and wrote and programmed 'We Connect', the no 1 dance hit for artist Stacy Q. He continues to write and produce for television, film and artists with his company Willie Wilcox Music. Wilcox composed the ringwalk music used by the current #1 ranked boxer in the world Manny Pacquiao. Bassist Kasim Sulton has toured as a band leader for Meat Loaf, and performed with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Scandal, Hall and Oates, and others.
As any visitor to Liverpool by mainline train will testify, this is a panorama of Lime Street. It shows the Crown pub, Lime St Station, St georges hall and the former Great North Western Hotel now converted into a hall of residence for students of John Moores University, which opened in 1996.
This is one UK city that has in recent times suffered from an an almost biblical exodus. Liverpool's population peaked in 1930s with 846,101 recorded in the 1931 census. Since then the city has experienced negative population growth every decade, with at its peak over 100,000 people leaving the city between 1971 and 1981.
Changes in the mode and type of shipping processed by the port of Liverpool, ie the rise of containerisation, had a big influence on this.

Station to Station is the tenth studio album by English musician David Bowie, released by RCA Records in 1976. Commonly regarded as one of his most significant works, Station to Station is also notable as the vehicle for Bowie's last great 'character', The Thin White Duke.
The album was recorded after he completed shooting Nicolas Roeg's The Man Who Fell to Earth, and the cover featured a still from the movie. During the sessions Bowie was heavily dependent on drugs, especially cocaine, and recalls almost nothing of the production.
Musically, Station to Station was a transitional album for Bowie, developing the funk and soul music of his previous release, Young Americans, while presenting a new direction towards synthesisers and motorik rhythms that was influenced by German electronic bands such as Kraftwerk and Neu!.
This trend would culminate in some of his most acclaimed work, the so-called Berlin Trilogy, recorded with Brian Eno in 1977–79. Bowie himself has said that Station to Station was 'a plea to come back to Europe for me'. The album’s lyrics, meanwhile, reflected his preoccupations with Nietzsche, Aleister Crowley, mythology and religion.
With its blend of funk and Krautrock, romantic balladry and occultism, Station to Station has been described as 'simultaneously one of Bowie's most accessible albums and his most impenetrable'. Featuring the single 'Golden Years', it made the Top 5 in both the UK and US charts. In 2003, the album was ranked number 323 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
In the early days of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway (L&
MR), the Liverpool terminus was located at Crown Street, in Edge Hill, officially opened in 1830. Construction of a purpose-built station began in October 1833, the land being purchased from Liverpool Corporation for £9000. A tunnel was constructed between Edge Hill and the new station (starting in 1832, prior to station construction), and the station was opened to the public in August 1836, although construction was not completed until the following year.
Because of the steep incline between Lime Street and Edge Hill, trains were stopped at Edge Hill, their locomotives removed, and the passenger carriages taken down by gravity, descent controlled by brakemen. The return journey was achieved by using a stationary engine to haul the carriages up with rope.
Within six years, the rapid growth of the railways meant that the original station needed to be extended, and a plan was made to erect an iron roof similar to that found at Euston station in London, ridge roofs supported by iron columns
however, Richard Turner and William Fairburn submitted a design for a single curved roof, which won the approval of the station committee. The work cost £15,000, and was completed in 1849. A second roof was added in the 1880s.
In 1845 the L&
MR was absorbed by its principal business partner, the Grand Junction Railway (GJR)
the following year the GJR formed part of the London and North Western Railway. The station was one of the first to send mail by train. The North Western Hotel designed by Alfred Waterhouse, was built in front of the station - this still stands, having been converted to accommodation for students of Liverpool John Moores University. At 'the grouping' in 1923, the station passed to the ownership of the London, Midland and Scottish (LMS) railway, and, in 1948, the London Midland Region of British Railways.
Lime Street was part of the first stage of electrification of the West Coast Main Line in 1959. In 1966, the station saw the launch of the first InterCity service.
Lime Street was voted the equal worst of the 20 busiest UK railway stations in a 2007 poll but was voted 'Station of the Year 2010' at the National Rail Awards thanks in part to a recent reburbishment

He was one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland.
In 563 he travelled to Scotland with twelve companions, where according to legend he first landed on the Kintyre Peninsula, near Southend. However, being still in sight of his native land he moved further north up the west coast of Scotland. In 563 he was granted land on the island of Iona off the west coast of Scotland which became the centre of his evangelising mission to the Picts.

London has two main financial centres, alongside the traditional City of London, and contains many of the UK's tallest buildings, including the second-tallest (and tallest completed), One Canada Square. Canary Wharf contains around 14,000,000 square feet (1,300,000 m2) of office and retail space, of which around 7,900,000 square feet (734,000 m2) is owned by Canary Wharf Group.
Around 90,000 people work in Canary Wharf and it is home to the world or European headquarters of numerous major banks, professional services firms and media organisations including Barclays, Citigroup, Clifford Chance, HSBC, KPMG, MetLife, and Thomson Reuters.
Canary Wharf was built on the site of the West India Docks on the Isle of Dogs. From 1802, the area was one of the busiest docks in the world. By the 1950s, the port industry began to decline, leading to the docks closing by 1980.
Canary Wharf itself takes its name from No. 32 berth of the West Wood Quay of the Import Dock. This was built in 1936 for Fruit Lines Ltd, a subsidiary of Fred Olsen Lines for the Mediterranean and Canary Island (Insula Canaria (from canis) 'Island of Dogs') fruit trade. At their request, the quay and warehouse were given the name Canary Wharf.
The Canary Wharf of today began when Michael von Clemm, former chairman of Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB), came up with the idea to convert Canary Wharf into back office accomodation. A new business district was planned, construction started in 1988.
A bust and a boom in property prices then occurred. At the peak of property prices in 2007, the HSBC building sold for a record £1.1 billion.
This dusk shot was taken at the evening rush hour and many offices are still filled with staff. Heron Quays DLR station is over to the far left and the Jubilee line underground tube station right of centre. The image is a panaorama stitch of siz seperate HDR images.

What a nice feelgood effect this track has on me, even when its minus something outside on the cobbles!
British Sea Power's Yan and Hamilton Wilkinson are brothers and were school friends with Matthew Wood in Kendal, Cumbria England. They are based in Brighton where BSP amassed a large following their own club night called 'Club Sea Power'. Its numerous support acts and occasional fashion show went down well in Brighton.
'The Decline of British Sea Power', the band's first album, was released in June 2003 to critical acclaim. Their tours often include unusual venues such as the Scillonian Club on the Isles of Scilly, Grasmere Village Hall, the St. John Boste Social Club in Kendal and Carnglaze Caverns in Cornwall. They have been compared with The Cure and Joy Division.
This track is taken from 'Open Season', the second album. Well worth a listen.

Grappenhall is a village in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is situated along the Bridgewater Canal, and forms one of the principal settlements of Grappenhall and Thelwall civil parish. According to the 2001 UK census, the population of the entire civil parish was 9,377.
Grappenhall is mentioned in the Domesday Book under the name Gropenhale, ('the Groping Place') which states it to be worth five shillings.
St Wilfrid's Church has a carving of a cat on the west face of the tower. This is believed to be Lewis Carroll's inspiration for the grinning Cheshire Cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The church itself was first constructed in 1120, though was rebuilt 400 years later. The church was also, at a time, in the possession of the Boidelle (Boydell) family.
Along with the church, the centre of the village contains two pubs (The Parr Arms and The Ram's Head), Grappenhall Hall residential School and St. Wilfrids Primary School. Bradshaw Community Primary School is also found north of the centre of the village.
Parts of the Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes were filmed in the Victorian cobbled centre of Grappenhall. It is also the birthplace of actor Tim Curry. Here Church lane is pictured from the west.

'Art for Art's Sake' is a single from the 'How dare You!' album, by the British Pop/Rock band 10cc. It was released in 1975. The band were Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme. They were all played multiple instruments and most of the band's albums were recorded at their own Strawberry Studios (North) in Stockport, England. I used to work about 2 minutes walk away from it. Eric Stewart engineered most releases.
Most of the band were from Manchester and grew up together as kids. They were originally rejected by The Beatles Apple label. Jonathan King signed the band to his UK Records label in July 1972 and dubbed them 10cc. By his own account, King chose the name after having a dream in which he was standing in front of the Hammersmith Odeon in London where the boarding read '10cc The Best Band in the World'.
A widely repeated claim, disputed by King and Godley, but confirmed in a 1988 interview by Creme, and also on the webpage of Gouldman's current lineup, is that the band name represented a volume of semen that was more than the average amount ejaculated by men, thus emphasising their potency or prowess.
The band had a canon of hits in teh mid 1970's. In February 1975 the band announced they had signed with Mercury Records for US$1 million. The catalyst for the deal was one song – 'I'm Not in Love'.
A compilation album 'Changing Faces - The Very Best of 10cc and Godley &
Creme' is a good intro to the band.

Designed by Michael Wilford and Buro Happold, (Wayfinding System and 'Artworks at the Lowry Gallery' by Reich + Petch) the building was completed in 1999 costing £120 million.
Funding was helped by £21m of National Lottery grant. The aerofoil canopy at the entrance is clad with perforated steel and illuminated from the inside at night. It was officially opened on 12 October 2000 by Queen Elizabeth II.
When I was a lad the dock complex at the Pomona Salford Docks was very run down and a good place to be picked off by a .22 air rifle pellet. Today the showcase Lowry has been joined by The Imperial War Museum North a shopping complex and MediaCityUK. This is a 200 acre complex, whose The main tenant upon initial completion will be the BBC at its new 12,500m² BBC Centre.
When completed, the development will have an unusual feature in that the streets will not bear any names, but will instead be identified by colours alone. The address of the BBC will, for example, be 'Blue'. The BBC have a long history in the city, BBC's very first regional TV studio was also in Manchester – Studio A at Dickenson Road – which it had bought from Mancunian Films in 1954. A place where Top of The Pops was originally filmed.
BBC North West will relocate to the site from its current premises in Oxford Road, Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4538157205 - 'The patron saint of Edinburgh was St Giles, and it is to he that the building is dedicated. St. Giles was the patron saint of cripples and lepers, of which I would expect there were plenty around the middle ages when at peak popularity. These were the premier league stars of their day. His feast day is celebrated on 1st September. St Giles, a 7th century hermit (and, later, abbot) who lived in France, became the patron of both town and church was probably due to the ancient ties between Scotland and France, a popular ally in the resistance to the larger neighbour in the south.
The building has a distinctive crown steeple, popular in Scotland in medieval times. There are a few in England too and one can be seen on the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
Although one of Edinburgh's religious focal points for approximately 900 years, the High Kirk of Edinburgh was only the seat of bishops between 1635-38 and 1661-1689. Thus 'high Kirk' is a more accurate title than the common label of cathedral. Presbyterianism was born here
The building is irregular as it has been added to at various stages over the last 900 years or so. Many chapels were added, many by craft guilds or wealthy merchants of the town.
In 1559, John Knox led the Lords of the Congregation into Edinburgh and was elected minister of Edinburgh. He played a principal role in establishing the styles of worship and administration that were to be accepted throughout the country. Knox served as Minister at St Giles' until 1572. The Reformers partitioned the interior of St Giles', dividing the congregation of Edinburgh and allowing the building to be used for a wide range of purposes. During the next 300 years the building housed a police station, a fire station, a school and a coal store. The Scottish guillotine, the 'Maiden', was housed in the church, and in one corner was a prison used for 'harlots and whores'. The General Assembly of the Church of Scotland met in the building, as did the Parliament and the Town Council.
Walking around the interior it is easy to feel that many old ghosts inhabit its fabric. James Graham, Marquess of Montrose, and Archibald Campbell, Marquess of Argyll were just two notable men executed for a clash of faith with the ruling classes. Both are commemorated within St Giles.

For anyone who has not experienced the many pleasures of Edinburgh city, Calton Hill is just to the east of the New Town in what North americans might call 'downtown'. There are several iconic monuments and buildings on the hill. The National Monument, Nelson's Monument, the Dugald Stewart Monument, the New Parliament House (the Royal High School), the Robert Burns Monument, the Political Martyrs' Monument and the Edinburgh City Observatory. Originally the Royal High School was earmarked for the site of the future Scottish Assembly. The new modern building is now at the foot of the hill at Holyrood.
The hill was owned by hill from Lord Balmerino until 1724 and what a view he must have had!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4392932861 - 'The three graces on the Liverpool mersey waterfront at dusk, after rain showers.
These important architectural landmarks are:
The Royal Liver Building, built between 1908 and 1911 and designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas. It is a grade I listed building consisting of two clock towers, both crowned by mythical Liver Birds. The building is the headquarters of the Royal Liver Friendly Society. Now Deutsche Bank.
The Cunard Building, constructed between 1914 and 1916 and a grade II* listed building. It is the former headquarters of the Cunard Line shipping company.
The Port of Liverpool Building, built from 1903 to 1907 and also grade II* listed. It is the former home of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board.
Added to this left and right is the new Beatles exhiition and the museum of Liverpool life.
Work commenced in 2007 to build a canal link between the Leeds-Liverpool Canal and the South Docks. The £22 million pound 1.6 mile extension to the Leeds-Liverpool Canal was officially opened on 25 March 2009. It opens to boaters at the end of April and links the 127 miles of the existing canal to the city’s South Docks, passing Pier Head and the famous Three Graces. The Pier Head was in this form for the 2008 city of culture celebrations.
At first, the Prince's Landing Stage was situated at the Pier Head to serve the trans-Atlantic liner service. There were many stages built during Liverpool's history, the most recent opened in the 1890s and was joined to the neighbouring George's Landing Stage, situated to the south. After further lengthening took place in the early twentieth century, the combined structure originally measured nearly 3,000 feet, almost half a mile. Both were scrapped in 1973, following the termination of trans-Atlantic services from Liverpool.
In the three years or so I worked in Liverpool, Pier Head served as a major bus interchange. There was also a very poor Beefeater / Berni Inn pub at the Pier head too, where the Beatles exhibition is today.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4663970701 - 'One of my favourite evening strolls with a view is along Wapping/Strand Street in Liverpool when dusk draws in. You can almost imagine the sea shanties from years gone past wafting up from the old clippers and other boats that must have plied the Mersey river to make this the great city that it is.
Shanties go way beyond the stereotype of a song about the sea that simply ends '..never to return'. In the days when human muscles were the only power source available aboard ship, sea shanties served a practical purpose: the rhythm of the song served to synchronize the movements of the sailors as they toiled at repetitive tasks. They also served a social purpose: singing and listening to songs is pleasant
it alleviates boredom and lightens the burden of hard work, of which there was no shortage on long voyages in those days.
Most shanties are 'call and response' songs, with one voice (the shantyman) singing the line and the chorus of sailors bellowing the response (compare military cadence calls). For example, the shanty 'Boney':
Shantyman: Boney was a warrior,
All: Way, hey, ya!
Shantyman: A warrior and a tarrier,
All: Jean-François!
Shanties can be split into a number of catagories. Long-haul or 'halyard' / 'long-drag') sung when hauling a long rope rope. Short-drag - as before, but a short rope. Capstan Shanties: Raising the anchor on a ship. Pumping Shanties, for pumping out the bilge hold. By now you probably realise how hard sailing used to be!
Sailors reputed to be good shantymen were valued and respected, although were expected to do their proper jobs too.
In recent times, the shanty style has been recycled by artists as wide afield as the Sex Pistols ('Frigging in the Rigging') and the Decemberists ('Mariners Revenge Song').
The theme song for the television show SpongeBob SquarePants (a version of 'Blow the Man Down') is one. Even the song 'Reise, Reise' by the german metal band Rammstein is based on a shanty.
A number of sea shanties mention Liverpool and the Mersey. have a look at Ron Smiths excellent site and connect with some seafaring history!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF13A2 - Albert Dock Liverpool Dusk Panorama from Wapping, Merseyside, North west England , UK
Albert Dock is a complex of dock buildings and warehouses in Liverpool, England. Designed by Jesse Hartley and Philip Hardwick, it was opened in 1846, and was the first structure in Britain to be built from cast iron, brick and stone, with no structural wood. As a result, it was the first non-combustible warehouse system in the world.
At the time of its construction the Albert Dock was considered a revolutionary docking system because ships were loaded and unloaded directly from/to the warehouses. Two years after it opened it was modified to feature the world's first hydraulic cranes. Due to its open yet secure design, the Albert Dock became a popular store for valuable cargoes such as brandy, cotton, tea, silk, tobacco, ivory and sugar. However, despite the Albert Dock's advanced design, the rapid development of shipping technology meant that within 50 years, larger, more open docks were required, although it remained a valuable store for cargo.
During the Second World War, the Albert Dock was requisitioned by the Admiralty serving as a base for boats of the British Atlantic Fleet. The complex was damaged during air raids on Liverpool, notably during the May Blitz of 1941. In the aftermath of the war, the financial problems of the owners and the general decline of docking in the city meant that the future of the Albert Dock was uncertain. Numerous plans were developed for the re-use of the buildings but none came to fruition and in 1972 the dock was finally closed. Having lain derelict for nearly ten years, the redevelopment of the dock began in 1981, when the Merseyside Development Corporation was set up, with the Albert Dock being officially re-opened in 1988.
Today the Albert Dock is a major tourist attraction in the city and the most visited multi-use attraction in the United Kingdom, outside of London. It is a vital component of Liverpool's UNESCO area.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4352626358 - 'Going back not too many years I used to work in Stockport, on the south of the Manchester conurbation (or Stokeport as the doomsday book apparently has it) and grew to know it quite well. More the old bits rather than the brutal Merseyway built over the top of the old Stockport Grammer School etc. I would often frequent the market place, Queens head, Bakers and Arden Arms, with St Marys Church at the top.
In my day the old Emersons wall advert was still covered up in Park Street (by an advertisment hoarding I think). It now adds a feeling of time to the marketplace, particularly when all the stalls have gone and only the church bells at the top of the road can be heard. It is partularly eary at dusk or early night time in this place when its deserted by traders, the council have tidied away all the cardboard and only victorian ghosts fill the streets.
Stockport Market is a collection of small traditional shops. Charlie on the Cheese Stall, the lady who does the alterations and of course the little cafe. It dates back to the 16th century as does the centre of town by 1884 it was the hub of the country's hatting industry. By which it was exporting more than six million hats a year. (Mental Note: One day I must make time to visit the the 'Museum of Hatting').
I once did a photoshoot for the short lived Stockport Ghost Tour.
This is the end of town where you would expect ghosts to be active. a place where victorian carriages would have drawn up, or maybe where public hangings would have taken place.
For sure, an interesting little bit of Englands North West.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4354921372 - 'A night shot of the new instalations at the head of Warrington Bridge Street and Horse market near the entrance to Golden Square shopping centre. The wet evening has brought out some nice reflections in the pavement.
Warrington has been a major crossing point on the River Mersey since ancient times and there was a Roman settlement at Wilderspool. In medieval times Warrington's importance was as a bridging point of the River Mersey, and it was a fulcrum in the English Civil War.
The armies of Oliver Cromwell and the Earl of Derby both stayed near the old town centre (the parish church area). Popular legend has it that Cromwell lodged near the building which survives on Church Street as The Cottage Restaurant. The Marquis of Granby public house bears a plaque stating that the Earl of Derby 'had his quarters near this site'. Dents in the walls of the parish church are rumoured to have been caused by the cannons from the time of the Civil War. On the 13 August 1651 Warrington was the scene of the last Royalist victory of the Civil War when Scots troops under Charles II and David Leslie, Lord Newark, fought Parliamentarians under John Lambert at The Battle of Warrington Bridge.
The expansion and urbanisation of Warrington largely coincided with the Industrial Revolution, particularly after the Mersey was made navigable in the 18th Century. As Britain became industrialised, Warrington embraced the industrial revolution becoming a manufacturing town and a centre of steel (particularly wire, given its name to the local Rugby team 'Wires'), textiles, brewing, tanning and chemical industries.
The navigational properties of the river Mersey were improved, canals were built, and the town grew yet more prosperous and popular. When the age of steam came, Warrington naturally welcomed it, both as a means of transport and as a source of power for its mills.
Heavy industry declined in the 1970s and 1980s but the growth of the new town around Warrington led to a great increase in employment in light industry, distribution and technology.

The Great Northern Warehouse is the former railway goods warehouse of the Great Northern Railway in Manchester city centre, England. It has been redeveloped as a car park and leisure complex. The building is located at the junction of Deansgate and Peter Street in the city centre. It was granted Grade II* listed building status on 3 October 1974.
The warehouse is a hugely impressive block, of blue brick below (and) red brick with blue brick dressings above. It was built to be fireproof with a steel frame, and built on a rectangular plan, 267 feet long by 217 feet wide and five storeys high, with 27 windows on the east and west sides and 17 windows on the north and south ends. All four sides have friezes lettered in white brick reading Great Northern Railway Company's Goods Warehouse. The warehouse was built above the Manchester and Salford Junction Canal, and a dock beneath was constructed to allow goods to be transferred to and from canal barges via shafts and a complex system of haulage using hydraulic power.[2] It is a unique survival of a three-way railway goods exchange station, serving the railway, canal and road networks of the Manchester region.
The development is owned by Capital & Regional and as of March 2013 comprises an AMC cinema, a casino, a bowling alley, bars, a Lifestyle Fitness gym, and a multi-storey car park operated by National Car Parks.
