Dunham Massey Hall and garden are immediately west of the village of Dunham Town, with the deer park, the only medieval park in Trafford to survive to the present day, lying to the south of the hall.
The present hall was initially built in 1616, but was later remodelled for George, Earl of Stamford and Warrington between 1732 and 1740
it was also altered towards the end of the eighteenth century and in the early twentieth century. During the First World War, the hall was used as a military hospital.
The hall and grounds were donated to the National Trust by the last Earl of Stamford, in 1976 They are open to the public and are amongst Britain's leading visitor attractions. The hall itself, the stables, and the carriage house of Dunham Massey are all Grade I listed buildings.
The garden houses over 700 plant species, as well as 1,600 trees and shrubs, and it hosts the largest winter garden in Britain (LinkExternal link The Guardian). The Winter Garden has many snowdrops, daffodils and bluebells

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CB00AE - Yorkshire Cheapest Pint To Rise By A Quid Now Lockdown Is Over
We've all enjoyed the pubs reopening this month. Whether you went out, or you stayed at home and decided to see what happens, it's nice to see a little bit of normality getting back into society ? although, it does seem like this is the calm before the storm.
The biggest question now? Whether our beloved locals can survive through this turbulent time, which is expected to see people spending much less now that jobs are being axed and workers continue to live off the furlough scheme.
One brewery that has felt the pull is Yorkshire's oldest, Sam Smith. Founded in 1758, Sam Smith's pubs are the most traditional pubs you'll find in England. They like to stick to traditions such as no phone, swearing and a big push on a social and fun time that pubs have always been focused on.
One of their biggest pushes, and one that Yorkshire folk have always enjoyed, is the fact that they've managed to keep the price of a pint as one of the cheapest in the country ? without skimping on quality.
But even they've struggled post-lockdown, and have announced that they'll be hiking up the prices of some of their favourite beers by as much as ?1. Taddy Lager will rise from ?2.30 to ?3.40 and their Soveriegn Bitter price will go from ?2.04 to ?3.04. You can hear the Yorkshireman's cry already ?Hooow muuchh?'.
Reports from The Sun show a Sam Smith's landlord saying: It's a heck of a price hike ? I don't know how I'm going to explain it to the customers. It's not going to make reopening after the lockdown any easier. The report also shows that Sam Smith pubs won't be the only ones implementing price changes, with Wetherspoons pubs set to be making the change too.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNKY - This image shows two fallow deer stags resting beneath a mature tree in the parkland at Dunham Massey, near Altrincham in Greater Manchester (postcode WA14 4SJ). The animals are pictured lying on grass in shaded woodland during summer, with their distinctive palmate antlers clearly visible.
Dunham Massey is a historic deer park managed by the National Trust and is well known for its long-established population of fallow deer (Dama dama). The herd has inhabited the estate for centuries, forming a central part of the landscape's character and ecological heritage. During warmer months, deer are often seen resting in shaded areas to regulate body temperature and conserve energy.
The image captures a calm moment of animal behaviour in a managed but naturalistic parkland environment, highlighting the coexistence of wildlife conservation and public access on National Trust estates. The presence of mature trees, open grassland, and undisturbed animals reflects traditional English park design, where deer are integral to both biodiversity and historic landscape aesthetics.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited to editorial use covering British wildlife, deer behaviour, National Trust properties, conservation, countryside tourism, and heritage parkland landscapes in England

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNM1 - These images show a historic sundial sculpture depicting a Moor figure at Dunham Massey, near Altrincham in Greater Manchester (postcode WA14 4SJ). The sculpture forms part of the estate's historic garden landscape and is accompanied by an interpretive plaque explaining its origins and symbolism.
According to the plaque, the sundial is in the style of one commissioned during the reign of King William III and represents Africa as one of the four continents recognised in European thought at the time. The figure is described as a Moor rather than an enslaved person and is believed to have been positioned at the site since before 1750.
Such figures, often referred to historically as Blackamoor sculptures, were common decorative elements in European gardens and interiors during the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, they are understood within a broader historical and cultural context, prompting discussion about representation, colonial perspectives, and the values embedded in historic art and landscape design.
The sculpture is shown holding a metal sundial aloft, set against the backdrop of the red-brick mansion and formal grounds of Dunham Massey. The inclusion of the explanatory plaque reflects the National Trust's approach to interpreting historic objects transparently and responsibly.
Photographed in daylight, these images are well suited to editorial use covering historic estates, garden sculpture, heritage interpretation, National Trust properties, art history, and contemporary engagement with complex historical narratives.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PP7G - This image shows a costumed butler welcoming guests into the formal dining room at Dunham Massey, a National Trust country house in Cheshire. The room is laid for dinner, with a long table dressed in white linen, place settings, and period tableware, recreating the atmosphere of upper-class domestic life in a historic English estate.
Dunham Massey was the former seat of the Earls of Stamford and is now preserved by the National Trust as an important example of a British country house and estate. The interiors reflect centuries of social history, including the rigid hierarchy and rituals associated with domestic service in aristocratic households.
Interpretation staff dressed in period costume play a key role in helping visitors understand how rooms such as this would have been used, bringing social history to life through storytelling and visual context. The presence of the butler highlights the contrast between the grandeur of formal dining and the labour required behind the scenes to maintain it.
Photographed in warm interior lighting, the image emphasises the richness of the wood-panelled room, traditional furnishings, and historic d??cor. It is well suited for editorial use covering British heritage, National Trust properties, social history, historic interiors, and visitor engagement at stately homes.

My all time favourite band of blokes with beards, the only one without whose surname is Beard. Its got to be the men from Texas Zed Zed Top. I got into them in the late 70's and marvelled at them at The Manchester Apollo and a few other places.
Just in case you have been living under a rock for the last 35 years, ZZ Top is an American rock band formed in June 1970 in Houston, Texas. The band consists of guitarist and lead vocalist Billy Gibbons, bassist and co-lead vocalist Dusty Hill, and drummer Frank Beard. The band and its members went through several reconfigurations throughout 1969, achieving their current form when Hill replaced bassist Billy Etheridge in February 1970, shortly before the band was signed to London Records. Etheridge's departure issued primarily from his unwillingness to be bound by a recording contract.
Since the release of the band's debut album in January 1971, ZZ Top has become known for its strong blues roots and humorous lyrical motifs, relying heavily on double entendres and innuendo. ZZ Top's musical style has changed over the years, beginning with blues-inspired rock on their early albums, then incorporating New Wave, punk rock and dance-rock, with heavy use of synthesizers.
ZZ Top were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. As a group, ZZ Top possesses 11 gold records and 7 platinum (13 multi-platinum) records
their 1983 album, Eliminator, remains the group's most commercially successful record, selling over 10 million units. ZZ Top also ranks 80th in U.S. album sales, with 25 million units. The band released their latest studio album, La Futura, in September 2012 and began a supporting tour in October.
This track is from Degüello the sixth studio album by American blues rock band ZZ Top, released in 1979 . 'Degüello' is a Spanish noun that means 'beheading' or, idiomatically, 'no quarter' (as in 'no surrender to be given or accepted--a fight to the death') It was the title of a Moorish-origin bugle call used by the Mexican Army forces at the Battle of the Alamo, Texas, in 1836.
Degüello was produced by Bill Ham, and engineered by Bob Ludwig and recorded and mixed by Terry Manning.
Chevrolet also known as Chevy, is an American brand of vehicle produced by General Motors (GM). Chevrolet was founded by Louis Chevrolet and ousted General Motors founder William C. Durant on November 3, 1911. In 1918 it was acquired by General Motors.
Chevrolet was positioned by Alfred Sloan to sell mainstream vehicles to compete with Henry Ford's Model T in the 1920s, with 'Chevrolet' or 'Chevy' being synonymous with GM. In North America, Chevrolet produces and sells a wide range of vehicles, from subcompact automobiles to medium-duty commercial trucks, whereas in Europe, the brand name these days is used mainly for cars produced in Korea by General Motors. Vauxhall and Opel are the more mainstream European brands.
Registration plate 466XUK is here on 1949 Chevrolet 5.7 Litre Pick-up. Its currently brown but has been many colours in its lifetime. Its well restored, a cracking vehicle!

This is a track from the album Black Cherry. Many critics complimented its blend of retro and modern electropop music (going back to the Mute labels roots), which was a departure from the ambient sound of their debut.
Black Cherry was a top twenty album in Goldfrapp's native UK, and its second single 'Strict Machine' was a top twenty single. It earned the band a deserved nomination for Best British Dance Act at the 2004 BRIT Awards.
She is a fascinating vocalist to see live. Be sure to take your partner or a lady friend if a bloke, or you may be chatted up all night at the gig. She has a large pink following. Nothing wrong with that, just enjoy the music and w=33062170@N08&

This is ye olde oak at Dunham Massey outside Altrincham, Cheshire. It is has been dated and thought to have been a seedling at the time of Queen Elizabeth the 1st. It has certainly had a life yet still produces healthy branches. 500 years is a long time.
Dunham Massey used to be on the Chester to York road in medieval times. The Masseys were the barons of Dunham until the 14th century.
By the Elizabeth period when our seedling took root, Dunham Massey Castle had been demolished. Probably during the medieval period, Dunham Massey Hall became the home of the manorial lord, and a centre of power in the area. The hall was rebuilt in 1616, leaving no remains of the old medieval hall. The mill at Dunham was first documented in 1353, although the mill's present structure dates to the 1860s. It lies on the River Bollin, opposite Little Bollington.
The first record of Dunham's deer park was also in 1353. The settlement of Dunham Woodhouse dates from the 15th century. During the medieval period, the primary source of employment in Dunham Massey was agriculture, mainly arable.
The Warrington and Stockport Railway was constructed through Dunham during 1853/54. Dunham Massey railway station served the area between 1854 and its closure in 1962. Dunham grew as a result, the population increasing by 57.5% between 1851 and 1881. Otherwise, the industrial revolution had little effect on Dunham Massey, and it remained a predominantly agricultural area.
I often cycle over to Dunham and can recommend the Vine, super pint of Samual Smiths Best Bitter. Only a stones throw from the hall &
deer park.
This is a colour infra red shot from an adapted 720nm filter Canon camera.

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
I remember Gary Numan coming out of the left field in 1979 with heavy synthesizer hooks fed through guitar effects pedals. At the time the likes of the Silicon Teens and The Normal (Warm Leatherette seemed to have the post punk synth sound licked.
Hammersmith boy, Gary Webb was original front man for Tubeway Army. 'Down In The Park' was Tubeway Armys third single and appeared on the Replicas album.
Replicas was based on a book Numan hoped to complete someday as a type of concept album. It was set in a not-too-distant future metropolis where Machmen (androids with cloned human skin) and other machines keep the general public cowed on orders from the Grey Men (shadowy officials).
Numan was directly inspired by the science fiction of Philip K. Dick, particularly the book 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?'.
Numan has become acknowledged and respected by his peers, with such musicians as Dave Grohl (of Foo Fighters and Nirvana), Trent Reznor (of Nine Inch Nails), and Marilyn Manson proclaiming his work an influence and recording cover versions of old Numan hits. If you have chance and inclination, checkout the 'Premier Hits' compilation for a good into to this forgotten pioneer.

Dunham Park covers an area of over 190 acres and is part of the Dunham Park Estate, run by the National Trust (NT). The park is mostly “pasture-woodland or park-woodland” and has been since the Middle Ages. Many of the oak trees, which make up the larger part of the woodland, date back to the 17th century. Dunham Park is the only place in the northwest of England with such a concentration of old trees, and one of only a few remaining in England, making it a site of national importance. The park supports a range of animals, including fallow deer. The old water mill is pictured here. This image has been take using a Hoya R72 filter for infra red.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF7D9W - A close portrait view of a male fallow deer, also known as a buck, photographed in Dunham Massey Deer Park on the Dunham Massey National Trust estate in Cheshire, England. The deer faces the camera directly, its branching antlers clearly visible and its distinctive spotted coat sharply defined against the soft greens and browns of the surrounding parkland. The animal's alert posture and open mouth suggest heightened awareness, typical of deer behaviour during the late summer and autumn months, particularly around the rutting season.
Dunham Massey is a historic stately home and landscaped deer park with a long tradition of managed fallow deer herds, reflecting centuries-old estate practices where deer were both a symbol of status and a managed natural resource. Today the estate balances heritage conservation with modern wildlife management, offering an important refuge for deer and other species within a carefully maintained historic landscape. The open grassland and scattered trees visible in the background are characteristic of English parkland design, intended to frame wildlife within a picturesque setting.
Fallow deer are one of the most recognisable deer species in the UK, identifiable by their palmate antlers and variable coat patterns. Their presence in historic estates such as Dunham Massey highlights the close relationship between British wildlife, land management and cultural heritage. The image conveys themes of nature, conservation, seasonal change and the coexistence of wildlife within designed landscapes.
This photograph is suitable for editorial use covering British wildlife, countryside heritage, National Trust properties, conservation and animal behaviour, as well as commercial applications requiring high-quality imagery of deer, stately home parklands and rural England.
