Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ER9NKG - ScotRail Inter7City High Speed Train crosses the Tay Rail Bridge towards Dundee beneath a broad summer sky filled with sunlit cumulus clouds. Viewed looking south across the Firth of Tay, the photograph combines modern passenger transport with one of Scotland's most recognisable feats of Victorian railway engineering. The dark lattice girders, repeated masonry and iron piers, calm estuary water and green agricultural landscape of Fife create a strong horizontal composition, while the train provides scale and a clear sense of movement.
The present double-track bridge links Dundee with Wormit in Fife and forms a vital part of the east coast railway corridor used by services between central Scotland, Dundee and Aberdeen. Designed by civil engineer William Henry Barlow and built by William Arrol and Company, it opened in June 1887. It replaced Thomas Bouch's original Tay Bridge, whose central spans collapsed during a violent storm on 28 December 1879 while a passenger train was crossing, causing the deaths of everyone aboard. Surviving masonry piers from the first structure remain visible beside the replacement bridge, preserving a physical reminder of one of Britain's best-known railway disasters.
More than a century after opening, the bridge remains operational infrastructure as well as a major Dundee landmark and a Category A listed structure. ScotRail's Inter7City trains connect Scotland's principal cities, and the refurbished diesel HST sets became a distinctive sight on routes serving Dundee. The scene can illustrate rail travel, public transport, Scottish connectivity, historic engineering, bridge maintenance, resilient infrastructure, regional economic links, sustainable alternatives to car travel, railway tourism and journeys through eastern Scotland. Bright sunshine falling across parts of the bridge and countryside contrasts with the towering cloud formations, capturing the changeable weather and expansive skies associated with the Tay estuary.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ENMPWR - A group of printed orange-edged British railway tickets illustrates split ticketing on a long-distance journey from Warrington Bank Quay in Cheshire to Dundee in Scotland. The visible coupons include separate travel and seat-reservation documents for different stages, with routing through Edinburgh and Kirkcaldy. Different trains, reserved seats and ticket conditions turn one continuous northbound trip into a bundle of individual tickets.
Split ticketing means buying two or more valid tickets for sections of the same journey instead of one through fare. Passengers may remain on the same train when it calls at every station where one ticket ends and the next begins, although this example also involves changes of train and differing reservations. The method can produce substantial savings because British rail prices are influenced by route, operator, time restrictions, availability and the combination of Advance, Off-Peak or other fares.
The photograph provides a clear example of the complexity passengers have historically faced when seeking the lowest price. A traveller may need several coupons, remember which ticket applies to each section, use the correct booked service where an Advance fare is involved and sometimes move between reserved seats. Printed collection receipts and reservation inserts add further paperwork, even though the tickets collectively cover a single journey.
This image is suitable for editorial coverage of UK rail fares, split-ticket savings, the cost of train travel, passenger confusion, railway privatisation, fragmented ticketing, consumer budgeting, domestic tourism and alternatives to driving or flying. It also provides context for rail reform, under which Great British Railways is intended to simplify fares and offer passengers a unified ticketing platform. The physical tickets record an era before smartphone e-tickets became dominant and show why passengers and government have called for a simpler and fairer fares system

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6H0 - Exterior view of Agnes Husband House, the Dundee headquarters of Social Security Scotland, located at 2 Greenmarket, Dundee DD1 4QB, Scotland, UK. The modern multi-storey office building houses Scotland's devolved social security agency and reflects recent investment in contemporary public-sector architecture in Dundee city centre. the building sits within an area of ongoing urban regeneration close to the city's central road network and wider waterfront redevelopment.
The structure features a contemporary design combining brick cladding with extensive vertical glazing, giving the building a strong civic presence while maximising natural daylight for internal office spaces. The ground floor incorporates glazed frontage and public-facing areas, reinforcing the organisation's accessibility and public-service role.
Named after Agnes Husband, a prominent Dundee-born social reformer and women's rights activist, the building reflects the Scottish Government's emphasis on social justice, dignity and respect within devolved welfare services. Social Security Scotland administers a range of benefits that were transferred from the UK Government following devolution, making the site an important symbol of Scotland's distinct approach to social security.
Photographed on a clear day with blue sky, the image shows the building's clean architectural lines, urban setting and surrounding road infrastructure, providing a strong editorial representation of modern public administration in Scotland and Dundee's evolving civic landscape.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E5TC6D - Exterior view of The Pillars Bar & Lounge at 7G Crichton Street in Dundee city centre, Scotland. The photograph shows the distinctive black-painted frontage with gold lettering, large front window, entrance canopy and pavement A-board, capturing a traditional Scottish pub and bar frontage within the busy central streetscape of Dundee. Visible customers inside the window add human interest and help place the venue in the context of everyday city life, hospitality and nightlife rather than as an empty architectural study. The image is useful for editorial stories about Dundee pubs, Scottish bar culture, independent hospitality, city centre leisure, traditional licensed premises and the resilience of local pubs in changing urban centres. The Pillars is regarded as one of Dundee's long-established pubs and is associated with the character of the city centre drinking scene, making the image relevant for travel, tourism, social history and documentary coverage. Its readable signage, recognisable address and strong street-level composition make it commercially useful for picture buyers needing imagery of Dundee landmarks, pub exteriors, hospitality businesses, Scottish nightlife and urban culture. The photograph also works for wider themes such as community meeting places, local economy, food and drink culture, independent bars, traditional interiors and exteriors, and the continuing role of pubs as visible social anchors in British towns and cities. The mixture of classic frontage styling and active modern use gives the picture broader relevance for features on heritage hospitality, city branding, weekend leisure, streetscape character and the survival of older pubs in contemporary Scotland. With clear text, a well-defined shopfront and a central Dundee location, it also suits guidebooks, magazine features, travel pages, hospitality trade articles and editorial pieces about the changing but persistent identity of Scottish pubs.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NCX0YG - The Beano (formerly The Beano Comic, also known as Beano) is a British anthology comic magazine created by Scottish publishing company DC Thomson. Its first issue was published on 30 July 1938,[1] and it became the world's longest-running comic issued weekly in 2018, publishing its 4000th issue in August 2019.[2] Popular and well-known comic strips and characters include Dennis the Menace, Minnie the Minx, The Bash Street Kids, Roger the Dodger, Billy Whizz, Lord Snooty and His Pals, Ivy the Terrible, General Jumbo, Jonah, and Biffo the Bear.
The Beano was planned as a pioneering children's magazine that contained mostly comic strips, in the style of American newspaper gag-a-days, as opposed to the more text story based Story papers that were immensely popular before the Second World War. In the present, its legacy is its misbehaving characters, escapist tales and anarchic humour with an audience of all ages. Beano is a multimedia franchise with spin-off books and Christmas annuals, a website, theme park rides, games, cartoon adaptations, and a production company.
