Characters such as the Bash Street Kids, Dennis the Menace, Minnie the Minx and others became cultural touchstones, blending humour, mild anarchy and social satire in a style closely associated with post-war British popular culture.

The white sculptural letters stand partially submerged, their mirrored form rippling across the surface of the water, creating a calm and contemplative image that blends typography, architecture and landscape.
The V&A Dundee is Scotland's national design museum and a flagship project in the city's waterfront regeneration. Designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the building's dramatic layered form draws inspiration from Scotland's coastal cliffs, with horizontal concrete planes extending over the river's edge. This proximity to water is an intentional part of the museum's design language, symbolically connecting creativity, environment and place.
The reflected V&A lettering functions as both signage and public artwork, reinforcing the museum's identity while engaging passers-by through visual interaction with light, movement and reflection. Such design choices reflect contemporary approaches to museum branding, where buildings and their surroundings are conceived as immersive civic experiences rather than static structures.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6EF - A wide-angle view of V&A Dundee, Scotland's national design museum, situated on the River Tay at 1 Riverside Esplanade, Dundee DD1 4EZ, photographed alongside RSS Discovery, the historic wooden research ship permanently moored at nearby Discovery Point. The image captures a striking juxtaposition between contemporary architecture and one of the most important vessels in the history of Antarctic exploration.
The V&A Dundee, designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, is inspired by Scotland's dramatic coastal geology and forms the centrepiece of Dundee's waterfront regeneration. Opened as part of a major redevelopment of the former industrial docks, the museum represents Dundee's transition from a manufacturing and maritime city to a centre for design, culture and education.
In the foreground lies RSS Discovery, built in Dundee in 1901 and famously used by Captain Robert Falcon Scott for his first Antarctic expedition. The ship is one of the best-preserved examples of a purpose-built polar research vessel and symbolises the city's historic role in shipbuilding, scientific innovation and global exploration. Its permanent presence on the Tay connects Dundee directly to the era known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.
The calm water of the Tay reflects both the angular modern form of the museum and the tall masts and rigging of the Discovery, visually linking past and present. Photographed in daylight under clear skies, the scene illustrates how Dundee's maritime heritage and contemporary cultural ambitions coexist on the same stretch of riverfront.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6EP - A large promotional sign bearing the message Discover Dundee Waterfront, photographed in Dundee city centre, Scotland, UK. The sign forms part of the city's wider place-marketing and regeneration messaging, encouraging residents and visitors to engage with Dundee's transformed waterfront along the River Tay.
Dundee's waterfront redevelopment represents one of the most significant urban regeneration projects in Scotland in recent decades, reshaping former industrial docklands into a mixed-use cultural, commercial and public realm destination. High-profile developments in the area include museums, public spaces, improved pedestrian routes and new connections between the city centre and the river, signalling Dundee's shift from an industrial port to a modern, design-led city.
The phrase Discover Dundee reflects broader strategies used by post-industrial cities to reframe their identity through culture, architecture and tourism, positioning place as an experience rather than solely an economic centre. Such branding initiatives are increasingly common across UK and European cities seeking to attract visitors, inward investment and civic pride through visual messaging in prominent public spaces.
Photographed in daylight with leaf shadows cast across the sign's surface, the image combines clean typographic design with subtle natural elements, reinforcing themes of accessibility, renewal and everyday urban life. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6ET - A blue directional road sign in Dundee, Scotland, indicating a route towards the Tay Bridge for walkers and cyclists. The sign features internationally recognised pedestrian and bicycle symbols, highlighting the bridge's role not only as a major road crossing but also as part of Dundee's wider active travel network.
The Tay Road Bridge spans the Firth of Tay, linking Dundee with Fife and forming one of the most important transport connections in eastern Scotland. While primarily designed for vehicular traffic, the bridge also provides segregated or designated routes for non-motorised users, making it a significant piece of infrastructure for commuters, leisure cyclists and long-distance walkers.
Such signage reflects broader policy priorities in Scotland and the UK aimed at encouraging walking and cycling as alternatives to car travel, supporting objectives around carbon reduction, public health and urban sustainability. Clear wayfinding signs are a key element of this approach, helping users navigate complex urban transport systems and promoting confidence in active travel routes.
Photographed in daylight against a clear sky, the image isolates the sign and its symbols, making it suitable for editorial use relating to transport planning, sustainable mobility, urban design and public infrastructure. The photograph documents how large-scale transport structures such as the Tay Bridge are increasingly framed within debates about inclusive access, environmental responsibility and the future of everyday urban movement.

KFC is one of the world's most recognisable fast-food brands, and its presence in Dundee reflects the wider spread of multinational food chains across UK city centres. The use of neon-style lighting and bold red and white colours is designed to stand out within the night-time streetscape, appealing to evening customers and contributing to the visual language of the modern night-time economy.
Dundee city centre has undergone significant redevelopment in recent years, with changes to retail patterns, hospitality and leisure uses reshaping how central streets are experienced after dark. Fast-food outlets and takeaway restaurants form an important part of this landscape, serving students, shift workers, visitors and late-night crowds alongside bars, cinemas and music venues.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K0PRNF - The Timex Corporation established itself as a major employer in Dundee after World War II due to generous incentives by local government. It set up at two campuses in the city: one at Milton and another at Camperdown. These two facilities were divided along gender lines and speciality. The Milton plant was 60 per cent male and predominantly produced tools and components. Camperdown however was 80 per cent female and did the assembly work. In 1966, Timex was the third largest single employer in Dundee, and the single largest employer of women. It peaked at 6,000 total workers in 1974, which made it one of the city's largest employers and gave it a unique place in the culture of Dundee.
Dundee's other large employer of women in the mid to late 20th century was the jute industry. However, Timex's assembly line paid significantly better, making it a more attractive option for many young women. Additionally, as jute manufacturing contracted in the city in the 1950s and 1960s, Timex absorbed much of the skilled workforce. These jobs offered better pay and conditions
for the men they doubled their earnings
The 1993 Dundee Timex strike was a major industrial dispute which took place in Dundee, Scotland, in 1993. The dispute, which was notable for its level of picket-line violence and the involvement of women, ended with the closure of the Timex plant in the city after 47 years. It's considered by historians to be the last of the large industrial disputes of late 20th century Britain.
In early January 1993, there were proposed layoffs at the factory. A ballot for strike action came out at 92% in favour, while requests for negotiation and arbitration were ignored. On 29 January, the workers came out. They offered to return to work on 17 February
however, they were told that there would be a cut of 10% across the board, which was refused. On 28 August 1993, the factory shut, following six months of industrial unrest.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NCX0YG - The Beano (formerly The Beano Comic, also known as Beano) is a British anthology comic magazine created by Scottish publishing company DC Thomson. Its first issue was published on 30 July 1938,[1] and it became the world's longest-running comic issued weekly in 2018, publishing its 4000th issue in August 2019.[2] Popular and well-known comic strips and characters include Dennis the Menace, Minnie the Minx, The Bash Street Kids, Roger the Dodger, Billy Whizz, Lord Snooty and His Pals, Ivy the Terrible, General Jumbo, Jonah, and Biffo the Bear.
The Beano was planned as a pioneering children's magazine that contained mostly comic strips, in the style of American newspaper gag-a-days, as opposed to the more text story based Story papers that were immensely popular before the Second World War. In the present, its legacy is its misbehaving characters, escapist tales and anarchic humour with an audience of all ages. Beano is a multimedia franchise with spin-off books and Christmas annuals, a website, theme park rides, games, cartoon adaptations, and a production company.
